Once again the community has greatly contributed to The Valley Reporter - this month’s magazine is chock full of some very interesting articles. Two local girls have had great success with their entries into the recent Kelmscott Show, read their stories on page 4 and 8. The City of Armadale has included in this issue a media release hot-off-the-press on “Bush Fire Preparedness”. Residents and landowners need to be responsible for their own fire safety so please take the time to have a read, page 9. With many snakes and reptiles unfortunately ending up as road kill as the warmer weather approaches, one lucky resident has been able to capture a magnificent bobtail with a smile on his face. Check out the great photograph on page 12. Thank you for the submissions and keep them coming! November would not be the same without mentioning the great work of a small group of dedicated Roleystone mums and their annual Girls on the Porch event. A staggering $41,000 will be donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation this year, thanks to Roleystone’s
wonderful generosity. Read the full story and see all the photographs taken from the day on page 16 and 17. Roleystone Community College has managed to do it again! At the annual Smarter than Smoking Young Directors’ Festival, Roleystone Community College and Kingsley Primary School were judged as having produced the best commercials and tied for first place. Photographs from the award night are on page 20 and the winning commercial will be screened at Armadale Grand Cinemas before each movie during December, January and February. Now, a story of a different kind. The Forrestdale Heart and Soul Men’s Shed members have been painstakingly restoring their HMB Endeavour replica to its former glory. The Valley Reporter was kindly invited along to meet some of the group’s members and to capture photographs of the beautiful vessel. All their hard work is about to pay off, with the replica near completion just in time for Christmas. Check out the full story and wonderful photographs on page 23. A special thank you to Alf/Hetty for the recent Captain Cook history article - I was delighted and have enjoyed reading it three times. With a name like Seabrook one would think sailing was in the blood, but the only sailing I did was in a dam in Norseman where we kids sailed a canoe made out of corrugated tin. I should add we paddled across in the darkness with our ears peeled for the “hunters” - the local water suppliers, whose job was to maintain and monitor this precious asset. Yes, we were caught and punished! However, I’ve been most interested in James Cook since I was a boy going to school at the local convent in Norseman back in the 1940s and ‘50s. I still have my first book on James Cook, a Whitcombe & Tombs New Zealand copy. Since then I’ve built up a personal library on Cook and his endeavours.
Added interest came when I moved to Wundowie, the home of Wundowie Pig Iron, in 1960. I was there when the foundry won the contract to cast all the anchors for the Endeavour II project. Eventually, as a member of the Wundowie Progress Association, I was able to get one of the “coasting anchors” donated to the WPA. It is now placed outside the community hall’s main entrance. If anyone is interested, it would be worth a visit, not only to see the anchor, but to visit a historic industrial town. It was here also that the Sarich engine was cast and also many bollards for the Sydney Olympic Games. A good time to visit this community is in mid-May when the Iron Festival is held, organised by the WPA. If you go, you can also take in a tour of the foundry. Benjamin Seabrook, Roleystone.

On Track for State Champs Roleystone Tee-ball and Baseball Club will be fielding an under-11 team in the 2013 State Championships. The club extends a big thank you to all those who attended the trials and congratulations to the players chosen to represent Roleystone. State Championships participation is a big commitment for players and parents, involving additional training sessions and attendance at three to four pre-state carnivals over the next couple of months. Sandy Johnson has been appointed coach and her dedication and commitment in leading the State Championship team is to be commended. The club is fortunate to have obtained sponsorship from Drill Rigs Australia, which will provide support (uniforms, etc) for the State Championship team. Roleystone Tee-ball and Baseball Club

Kofukan karate Roleystone dojo entered a small, yet diverse, crew in the Yoseikan-Ryu Spring Open Tournament on 4th November. Two of our National competitors, Brooke Williams and Kaitlin Brindley, finished up a spectacular year of karate by taking out first and third placings, respectively, in their gritty kumite (sparring) events. Brooke took home a lovely set of ceremonial swords, whilst Kaitlin won an impressive gold cup (Kaitlin’s Mum, Angela, was so happy that she decided to go home and drink a bubbly or two out of it). Our pee wee competitors were so awesome that it is pretty obvious they will be taking home their own swords and cups one day. The Purser boys, Clayton and Daniel, have no fear whatsoever, Danny and Lucas showed up their opponents with efficient sparring, and Skye was out there for the girls in impressive form. Junior competitors Abby Fouweather, Lochlann Mackay and Bruce Thonell competed admirably in the 10-11-year-old divisions, going up against kumite opponents who were often a LOT bigger than they were (as in, geta-stepladder bigger). Needless to say, the brand new protective equipment purchased with a grant from Telstra’s Kids Fund received a great workout, and certainly saved our crew a bruise or two. And the results were: Brooke Williams - 1st Place Womens Open Kumite, Kaitlin Brindley - 3rd place Girls Open Kumite 15 Years, Danny Brooke & Lucas Henderson - Bronze Participation Medal Novice Boys Kata 8 Years and Under, Skye Mclean Bronze Participation Medal Novice Girls Kata 8 Years and Under, Danny Brooke, Lucas Henderson, Clayton & Daniel Purser - Bronze Participation Medal Novice Boys Kumite 8 Years and Under. Congratulations to all of the crew, and heartfelt thanks to Sensei’s Darren, Brooke (who admirably balanced coaching duties with competing on the day) and Cameron for their coaching efforts, as well as to all of the supporters who cheered on the crew all day. Kate, 15, received first prize for her scones and pikelets and second prize for her chocolate cake, giving her the most points in the youth cooking section. The City of Armadale is reminding residents to ensure their properties are bushfire ready. Failure to meet the requirements of the Bushfire Notice may result in penalties being issued to homeowners. Owners are encouraged to be proactive on their properties in reducing fire hazards and fuel loadings on properties and ensuring your compliance with the City of Armadale Firebreak Notice prior to 1 December 2012 and throughout the summer months. Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones is urging residents to act responsibly and prepare their properties for the summer season. “Preparing properties for bushfire season is a shared responsibility. Roleystone Community College has benefited recently from the addition of lovely picnic park benches, strongly constructed from recycled materials by a local business, David J Willis Building Pty Ltd. The jarrah comes from a recently-demolished house in Merton Road, previously owned by Colin Hamilton (the former gardener/maintenance man at Roleystone Primary School), so it is quite fitting that the wood has ended up back at the local school. The steel frame work has also been recycled from the old primary school site.

Over the two week October holiday break much was achieved in terms of the final completion of the RCC building program. The 68 parking bays for staff, visitors and deliveries have been actioned.

Buckingham Bridge Update Tony Simpson MLA, the Member for Darling Range was very happy to be informed recently that work will soon begin on a permanent replacement for Buckingham Bridge which was destroyed in the Kelmscott Roleystone bushfire. The $7.1 million replacement bridge will be constructed to the south of the temporary culvert. This will allow the construction process to be completed without the need to close the crossing and divert traffic around the construction area. The Bridge will be a single span 25 metre long precast structure with reinforced concrete walls.
It will also enable new approaches from the East and West with better sight lines for motorists. Mr Simpson said “I welcome the delivery of the new Buckingham Bridge after detailed design work. It will complete the major public works following this disastrous fire.” The bridge will be funded by the Western Australian Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements and the Natural Disaster State Contingency fund. The Roley Roamers walking group is calling for new roamers. The walking group is part of the Heart Foundation Walking program in partnership with Women’s Health and Wellbeing Services and invites women of any age and at all fitness levels to join the group, share their fitness goals and make new friends. The Heart Foundation recommends adults should aim to include at least 30 minutes of physical activity (such as brisk walking) on most, preferably all, days of the week. Qigong What does it mean? It is certainly not a new dish in your local Chinese restaurant! Qigong means the right effort to produce energy. Qigong is the grandfather of a number of Chinese therapies including Tai Chi, and was first practised more than 5000 years ago. It involves some exercises with some gentle soft movements, hard movements that require more muscular activity preferred by the martial artists, and the “static” meditative type of exercises, but all have one thing in common, that is that they be done with emphasis on the breath and mind focus. Qigong’s ultimate aim like yoga’s is spiritual enlightenment, by mastering your own body, your mind and discovering and knowing our “true self”. On the way to spiritual enlightenment, by practising Qigong regularly, you will achieve your optimum health. Another aspect of Qigong that is rarely discussed is that you’re putting the responsibility for your health maintenance and healing yourself back in your own hands by not relying on others. Master Lim would love to see that Qigong, Yoga, Meditation, and Self Knowledge eventually be taught to all, from primary school upwards in the formal school curriculum. His teaching commitments take him to Bali, India and other countries. Master Lim gives public talks and conducts workshops on these subjects while continuously deepening his knowledge as although he may be a ‘Master’, he considers himself a perpetual student. Master Alex Lim is currently running Qigong and meditation classes in Applecross, North Fremantle, White Gum Valley, Nollarmara and has been running a class in Roleystone since August at the Roleystone Recreation Centre. Witty, naughty Avenue Q
With strong themes such as racism, pornography, homosexuality and puppet sex, Roleystone Theatre’s musical production of Avenue Q is definitely aimed at adults and mature teenagers. The production team says the show is great for teenagers because it deals with real life, but parents should use their discretion based on the maturity of their children. Described as “Sesame Street for adults”, the musical focuses on the life of Princeton, who finishes university and moves out into the big wide world. Renting an apartment in Avenue Q, he meets several others all searching for their purpose in life. With songs including The Internet is for Porn, It Sucks To Be Me and I’m Not Wearing Underwear Today, the show won three Tony Awards in 2003 including best musical. It features 11 puppet and three human characters and is performed with the puppeteers visible. “Much of the show’s ironic humour arises from its contrasts with Sesame Street, highlighting the differences between childhood and adulthood,” director Lorna Mackie said. “I am a huge fan of modern musicals and Avenue Q is one of the best of this genre. “The show, while performed in a somewhat simplistic children’s style, actually deals with some extremely complex themes and has a range of subtle layers to convey how the characters deal with these real issues.” Mackie made her directorial debut in 2010 with the musical Reefer Madness and followed it up with the best musical production Finely Award for Funny Business last year. With Avenue Q, the puppetry adds a whole new dimension. “The actors had to undergo several intense puppetry workshops to work on emoting through the puppet, as well as their voices and singing, which are the actors’ normal tools,” Mackie said. Holiday Horse and Pony Camp There are only a few short weeks until the school holidays and that means… Christmas holidays camp time at Halcyon Stables! This camp caters for children aged 6 to 16 years of age, from beginners through to advanced riders and is being held from 19-21 December. It would make an awesome Christmas gift to the horse-mad child in your life. The details: • 3-day residential camp, all meals and drinks provided $400 per child; • 3-day non-residential camp, students arrive 9am and return home each evening at 5pm - $300 per child; • Single day attendance $120 per child per day. Students are welcome to bring their own ponies, or ride one of the stables’. On arrival, students will be assigned to a horse or pony, which becomes their “own” for the duration of the camp and gives them a taste of what horse ownership is really like. With assistance and full supervision, students will be responsible for the care and welfare of their assigned horse or pony for the three days. They will help groom, saddle up and take care of their pony, including feeding, refilling their water and mucking out the pony’s yard or paddock. Students will be placed into groups according to their riding level. Each day, students will ride at least
twice during the day. Students will receive instruction on correct, safe riding and will also enjoy a bush ride through gorgeous Korung National Park. Students will also participate in games and activities through which they will learn more about caring for a horse or pony. Canning MHR Don Randall said that the recent decision by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) to allow orchardists in WA to continue to use the fruit fly chemical control Fenthion is a significant victory for local fruit growers. Facing the devastating possibility of losing the one remaining effective control to combat fruit fly, Mr Randall said it was inspiring to see growers unite to fight for a common cause and preserve the use of Fenthion for at least another 12 months. “While this is a commendable victory for fruit growers, particularly those in the Perth Hills area, we must not forget that APVMA’s decision is an interim measure that by no means guarantees the continued use of Fenthion in future years,” Mr Randall said. “The Hills Orchard Improvement Group was extremely proactive in the fight to preserve the use of Fenthion and the group was led by some dedicated, energetic advocates such as Brett and Bruno Delsimone, Tim and Wilma Byl, Ross Anile, Eric Ghilarducci and many others who can be very proud of
their achievement. “The APVMA’s proposed ban of this effective pest control was a perfect example of unnecessary overregulation and was based on spurious scientific evidence that the Hills Orchard Improvement Group successfully challenged. “I congratulate the Hills Orchard Improvement Group on their outstanding campaign on this issue.” WA orchardists have been granted a temporary reprieve with the introduction of new labelling for Fenthion which will allow the continued use of the product with several new conditions attached. Mr Randall said while this was great news for growers in WA who will be able to accommodate the new spray patterns put forward by APVMA, primary producers in other states weren’t so lucky. “If APVMA and the Labor government thought they had a fight on their hands here in WA, wait until fruit growers in the Eastern states understand the ramifications of this decision on their operations, which is likely to leave many farmers unprotected from the menacing fruit fly,” he said.

Two local schools have been awarded first place in the annual Smarter than Smoking Young Directors’ Festival – and health is the overall winner. There was a draw for first place, with Kingsley Primary School and Roleystone Community College judged as having produced the best commercials. Students from six schools in the South Metropolitan area produced a 30-second television commercial for the past few months to promote an anti-smoking message for ‘Smarter than Smoking’. Coordinated by the Smarter than Smoking Project and the South Metropolitan Public Health Unit - Armadale, the Festival is an innovative approach to health promotion in the school setting. “This is the second year the competition has been run, and the standard of entries was high,” Heart Foundation Cardiovascular Health Director Trevor Shilton said. “The competition gives students an opportunity to apply lessons about the health risks of smoking in a hands-on, practical way.” “Smoking rates among 12 to 17 year olds in WA are low – less than 5% - but it’s important to keep supplying information about the health risks. “Smoking is very addictive, and children who take on board the messages of our latest campaign, Future In Your Hands, are in a better position to make informed choices.” To assist in bringing the students’ ideas for their television commercials to life, expert mentoring and high quality equipment including cameras, lighting and sound were provided by Murdoch University. Students were extremely excited to produce and star in their own productions. The Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School community recently celebrated student talents at the annual Music Night. The concert was held in the wonderful facilities of the Lumen Christi College Performing Arts Centre and featured students in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6. The Year 3 and 4 choir opened the show with a rousing rendition of “The Pirates Life” that was full of joyful “yo, ho, ho’s”. The Year 4 students who made up McNamara’s Band were certainly in fine form. The evening also showcased four instrumental students, who received awards for excellence at the recent Catholic Schools Performing Arts Festival. At the festival, the school band also received a shield for being the most outstanding primary school band and they entertained the audience with “Blazing Saddles” and a toe-tapping performance of “I Got Rhythm”. The evening came to wonderful close when the Year 5 and 6 choir presented a medley of songs from around the world. The World of Maths Roadshow gave students from Years 3 to 6 an ideal opportunity to see how maths is applied to some real life situations. More importantly, students were engaged in handson activities that catered for all ability levels and probed their problem-solving skills. There were 17 large, colourful games in each session, with corresponding worksheets for the students. Each activity focused on one of the mathematics strands: number, space, measurement, chance and data and logical thinking and sequencing. The students were excited and intrigued as they solved a variety of problems, discovered number patterns, identified geometric properties and applied mathematics to the
physical world. A trip to the Western Australian Museum History recently gave Year 1 students an insight into what life was like for their grandparents. History is crucial to young children because it is important for their development to recognise the concept of past and present. So Year 1 students and teachers embarked on a museum adventure and uncovered items used in the past like toys, cameras and kitchen utensils. With the help of parents, the group was able to enjoy an education session directed by the museum facilitators about what an olden day school was, how washing was done and how toys were played with. Students discovered how long it took to take a photograph and how strict teachers used to be!

Restored to former glory
The Forrestdale Heart and Soul Men’s Shed members have been painstakingly restoring their HMB Endeavour replica to its former glory. A combined effort from all Shed members has helped to rebuild the model of James Cook’s ship since it was donated to them in poor condition in June 2011 from the old Pioneer Village site in Armadale. The group is still trying to gather more information about the birth of this small-scale Endeavour replica - exactly where, why and who made it in the first place. The Kalamunda Water Park opened its door for the summer season on 1 November with something for everyone to help cool off over the warmer months. Managed by YMCA in partnership with the Shire of Kalamunda, the Water Park is open daily from 9am-5pm throughout November and 9am-6pm from 1 December until 31 March. Early morning lap swimming is available on Wednesdays and Fridays from 6am-9am. Shire President Cr Donald McKechnie said, “The new and improved facility has been very popular with local residents and the Shire and YMCA are proud to present the Kalamunda Water Park as a must visit school holiday destination this summer.” Kalamunda Water Park Manager Glenn Osmond said, “We are expecting it to be a very busy summer with our early bird waterslide having proved to be very popular throughout the community.” “We have many great events in the pipeline, with an exciting community event planned for Saturday 1 December to celebrate the season opening of the Water Park.” “The Water Park will continue to offer swimming lessons at the centre through its Aqua Safe Learn to Swim program, with
expressions of interest being taken for the January School Holidays and Term 1 2013.” “This season we are excited to add an Aqua Ball to our attractions, a large inflatable ball that sits on the main pool and people can run inside it. Julia Dalby in WA premiere of very “very wrong” reindeer comedy
Former Roleystone Theatre performer Julia Dalby reckons there’s a good chance people will be offended this December - she’s in a show with Santa’s reindeer like you’ve never seen them before. Groovy Boots Theatre is presenting the WA premiere of The Eight: Reindeer Monologues at Lazy Susan’s Comedy Den in the lead-up to Christmas. It’s a darkly comic tale of corruption, abuse and deviancy implicating the smallest elf right up to the jolly fat man himself. Written by Jeff Goode, this professional production of his critically-acclaimed work is described as “as all kinds of wrong” and definitely NOT for children. A scandal erupts at the North Pole and each reindeer delivers clever, humorous and confronting monologues, dishing the real dirt on Santa’s perversions, Rudolph’s mental health and why Dancer no longer dances. Dalby plays Vixen and it’s her allegations of sexual harassment that drive the play to its conclusion. “I have the last monologue and it’s funny, coarse and confronting,” she said. “Do we believe Vixen or don’t we? And can the horrifying things she’s saying
possibly be true? “Making her likeable and believable is the main challenge because the audience has to warm to Vixen and I want them to be on her side by the end.” Involved in theatre for the past 11 years, Dalby has performed with the Old Mill, KADS, Blak Yak, Roleystone and Blue Room Theatres, Graduate Dramatic Society and Act 1 Scene 1 in productions such as Jack The Ripper, Secret Bridesmaid’s Business, The Portrait of Dorian Gray and Chicago. backyard, the steps are clear: get rid of any excess fruit and don’t let fruit rot on the ground; if you have unwanted or unmanaged trees, remove them; and finally, monitor trees for fruit fly and if there is activity, take action to control the pest. “These measures will reduce breeding sites and prevent adult fruit fly from laying eggs in fruit. Ultimately, they will help protect local fruit supplies.” The display featured demonstrations on ‘how to make your own’ fruit fly trap with horticultural consultant Peter Coppin and options for fruit fly control in backyards. Visitors could also watch the release of sterile male fruit fly, which is currently being trialled in Roleystone as a way to help manage populations. Fruit West project officer Graham McAlpine said staff and committee members present were pleased with the high level of interest from the general public and small landholders in better control of the pest. roleystone unplugged Although numbers were down this month due to two close meetings, enthusiasm was sky high for the Unplugged Acoustic Folk, Roots & Blues held on 11 November. The Remembrance Day event was marked with several songs honouring fallen soldiers. There was also an impromptu acoustic jam session which had the small, but mustard keen, audience jumping in their seats. This was sparked off when we were joined by Erhard, founder of the Roleystone-based
“Rolling B. B. Blues Band”, supported by Jim Dick (vocals and guitar); Mel (vocals, harmonica and slide guitar), Tony Street (rhythm guitar) and the amazing maestro Erhard leading on harmonic. A community approach to controlling the damaging pest, fruit fly, was a key point of discussion at the Karragullen Expo. Visitors to a display run by the Department of Agriculture and Food and industry body Fruit West were told everyone could help ‘swat fruit fly before it makes a mark’. Mediterranean fruit fly is known to infest more than 200 types of fruit and vegetables and costs the Western Australian horticultural industry millions of dollars each year. Department officer Alec McCarthy said fruit fly impacted on many commercial fruit growers in WA, including growers in the Perth Hills area. “Industry is moving towards an ‘area-wide management’ approach to defend crops from fruit fly,” Mr McCarthy said. “While industry is working hard to protect crops, this work can be compromised if fruit fly in nearby areas is not managed. “This means it is up to everyone, not just commercial growers but anyone with a fruit tree or vegetable patch in their backyard, to control fruit fly. “For those with fruit trees in their

Spring has seen the arrival of four new ponies at Rainbow Riding School: Ticket: A 6-year-old, 13 hands high chestnut riding pony mare, Ticket has a lovely gentle personality and is already a favourite with some longtime riders, including Roley Riders Tammy Nairn and young Sonny K., as well as Bianca B. and tiny tot riders like Tegann. Ticket has already been out and about on the Eventing scene, partnered by her trusty ‘trainer’, Shannon Meakins. The team debuted at the Kelmscott Pony Club in-hand series , the Wallangarra Pony Club One Day Event on 14 October and the eventing training day on 11 November, as well as at the Wallistons Hickstead. Paris: A pretty 8-year-old, 13.2 hands high brown riding pony mare. Paris has certainly bonded with Chief Instructor Anita Moor, who put her through her paces at the Wallangarra Pony Club eventing training day on 11 November. The pair took home a sixth place ribbon in the 16 years and over bracket, which required completion of a 65cm jumping round, a dressage test and a challenging cross country course. Anita had an absolute ball, but, like the other ‘senior Wally riders’ who competed, certainly felt it the next day. Look out for Paris (and hopefully, Anita) out and about Eventing in 2013. Dakota: A brand new Mum of a stunning palomino foal, nicknamed Spyder (because of his gangly long legs). Dakota is a ClydesdaleCross-Welsh Cobb Bay who stands at 14 hands high and is 6-years-old. Her boy, Spyder, loves people, especially kids, and has been winning the hearts of all of his visitors. Among Spyder’s fan club are Roleystone Community College students, Jayde and Jack Wind, Abby Fouweather and Ashley Hardisty. His Mum, Dakota, will have many years at Rainbow and it sure looks like she will learn to love jumping and eventing like all the other ponies, but young Spider will only be visiting for a short while, until he is weaned.
