Roleystone’s Community College is getting involved in Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution and standing up for real food, good nutrition and great tastes, something everyone got a piece of at their Food Revolution Day. Under a clear blue sky, a steady crowd of people gathered in the community garden to sample pumpkin soup, juices, locally grown fruit, goat’s milk, honey and honeycomb straight from the beehive, and irresistible wood-fired pizzas that you could make yourself for a gold coin donation. As some of you may be aware, 2012 is the Year of Reading. This may be the reason for the emphasis I’ve seen on students’ literary education in school. Some local papers have interviewed a range of people from their communities and asked them “What have you been reading?”. They’ve also had local folk write small pieces about their reading experiences, with the possibility of receiving a book prize at the end of the year. Here’s an example of one reading anecdote: “I taught myself to read at about 9 years of age, mainly by reading comic books such as ‘Film Fun’, comic strips like ‘The Beano’, and then story booklets such as ‘Hotspur’ and ‘Champion’. If I ever had trouble with a word, I’d ask my family what it meant. My first novel was ‘Tarzan’, which I loved as a boy, especially when the films with Johnny Weissmuller as Tarzan were made. The most recent novel I read was ‘Brendon Chase’, a boy’s novel set in 1920’s England. The story tells of 3 young boys running away from home, and try to cope with life in a forest. Both boys and girls may enjoy it.” During my time as an English teacher, I was often amazed by the lack of novelreading by a large number of students. My favourite novel in High School was ‘Of Mice and Men’, by John Steinbeck. It had strong, interesting characters, like George and Lennie, who were lonely and desperate, searching for a brighter future. Although it had a violent ending, I valued it as a powerful reflection of my childhood in Norseman, a gold-mining town of some repute. I’ve read many a short story, both in solitude, and to my students. My favourite is ‘The Necklace’, written by Guy de Maupassant, one of the fathers of the modern short story. He had such a wonderful insight into humanity, and his many works are definitely worth a look. If you get the chance, you should also read the West Australian story ‘The Only
One Who Forgot’, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I’ve just started reading the 12-volumelong account of Australia’s part in the First World War, by C.E.W. Bean. I hope to finish it by 2015. Anyone willing to bet I can do it? In addition, I’ve been delving into a little poetry, mostly old ones from England and Australia that remind me of my childhood days, when the nuns read poems. In particular, I’m enjoying the works of Paul Murray, an Irish Dominican priest who wrote about Western Australia. Reading and writing are truly great arts, and essential skills for everyone. Mastering the ability to read and write, becoming literate adults, is something we should all aim for, and is, in my opinion, the ultimate reason for going to school. Benjamin Seabrook, Roleystone. I’ll freely admit, it was entirely my fault for letting my dog off the lead whilst walking on the Thompson Road track on the early morning of Thursday the 3rd of May. As soon as he got free, he took off despite my calls and headed straight for a kangaroo, who stood at its full height, staring composedly at my dog who barked incessantly. Luckily, with the assistance of a runner and another gentlemen who came by, I was able to catch and restrain my dog. Unfortunately, the kangaroo got itself caught up in a nearby fence as it tried to run away, but the two gentlemen and another couple finally freed it from the fence with wire cutters. I wanted to thank them all so much for their care, time and patience. It was truly a horrid situation. I don’t even know the names of these dear people, but heaven knows what would have happened if they hadn’t turned up. Thank goodness the kangaroo was unhurt, my dog will be staying permanently on the lead when out on walks. Thank you, Vikky Trewick.

Volunteers are required to be part of Drug ARM WA’s Street Van Outreach Service. The service aims to provide information, support and referral to street present and at risk young people in various locations across the Perth metropolitan area. The Street van operates between 8pm and 2am on Friday and Saturday nights in Northbridge, between 6.30pm and 11.30pm on Saturday nights in Joondalup and between 7pm and 12pm in Armadale. The van is staffed by an experienced youth worker and a team of trained and dedicated volunteers. Volunteers will have the opportunity to be a valuable resource to young people in need of support - ranging from being a listening ear, to providing basic first aid to giving information about other services that may be able to help. They will also have the opportunity to work as part of a professional, Christian and community based organisation, amongst a fantastic team of volunteers. No experience is necessary as full training and supervision is provided, applicants need only have a passion for working with a range of people. Once again, I am running a Mums and Bubs group every Thursday at the Conscious Conception and Birth Centre, located at 1 Lefroy Rd, Mt Nasura (corner of Lefroy Rd & Albany Hwy) for the next 5 weeks from 10-11am. I have about 16 mums attending thus far, so if you’re interested, get in quick! I’m developing a new music program that I think I’ll call the “Happy Mummy Music Program”. In the 6-week program, I’ll teach Mums how to use music and sound as a tool to stay happy, relaxed and connected with their babies. Each week we’ll focus on a different aspect of music, including singing, moving, playing with instruments, listening to music, creating family lullabies, so that by the end of it you’ll be integrating music into your everyday lives. You’ll also get “Home-Play” each week! I will be starting a new group for next term. Due to the venue, the groups will only be for babies up to the fast crawling stage. YOUTHS’ HOPES FLY AND FALL a disappointment like this will have an ongoing ripple effect on our youths’ selfesteem, emotional resilience and regard for the community. Their general mental health and well-being will affect the choices they make for the future, and being in a state of boredom, isolation, without mental and physical stimulation or activities, will do them (and our community) no favours. I think it’s about time that everyone got together on this issue and pressured the City of Armadale and our two local Roleystone Councillors Caroline Wielinga and Grant Nixon to get on with the job and stop putting the skate park on the back burner. If you are still dissatisfied, then why not consider attending a Council or Committee meeting. The public may ask questions at the beginning of each meeting, and there are public question time procedures that need to be adhered to. Question time is not to be used as a forum for public statements or to make submissions to Council, but it is your opportune chance to ask any questions you may have. For over 7 years now, the youth of Roleystone and Karragullen have been requesting the City of Armadale for an upgrade of their skate park. Since the upgrade process began, their hopes and expectations have been raised, but now there is real concern that the skate park design may be either downgraded or delayed as the Community Garden and Men’s Shed Group are pushing to have their facilities where the current skate park is located. A Community Council agenda item on Tuesday the 8th of May identified that the current site is the prime site to build the new skate park. The report clearly identified that moving the skate park to another site would mean a considerable increase in costs, or a downgrading of the skate park design, in order to cover the increased cost for drainage, site works and lighting. At a Council meeting on Monday the 14th of May, the Council advised that in the event of the site relocation, there were no additional funds to cover the cost increase, and that any additional funds would have to be put forward as a request to next year’s budget deliberation for 201314. This would obviously mean that our youth will either have to wait at least 12 months or more for the design they want, or have to accept a lower standard skate park design now. I firmly believe that our young people have every right to expect a high standard skate park within a reasonable time, without being compromised for the sake of other community groups. Considering what we know about issues identified with our youth, we know that

On Wednesday 25th of April, eight Year Six Prefects from Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School attended the dawn service at Memorial Park in Armadale with Assistant Principal Mr David Tunchon. A very large crowd braved the dark and chilly conditions to pay their respects, including the students who presented a wreath on behalf of

the school. Head Girl, Keeley Wentzel Smythe said that attending the service gave her an opportunity to think about all those who sacrificed so much so that we could live in peace. Good Shepherd had their own ANZAC Day ceremony at the school, at which Mrs Stone’s Year Four class presented a moving tribute.
Mothers Day Morning Tea
On Wednesday 2nd of May, the mothers, grandmothers and other significant women in the Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School
community were treated to a celebratory morning tea at the school. The guests gathered in Ward House and were generously served tea and coffee by Fathers Andrew and Marcello, Assistant Principal Mr David Tunchon and some wonderful Dads. The Year six students were the hosts for the morning and displayed fantastic skills
as they expertly served the guests with a delicious morning tea. The mums took the opportunity to mingle, chat and relax with hand massages, another skill at which the Year Six hosts excelled!
This is the first time that a Mothers Day Morning Tea has been held at the school and it was a great success. Thank you to all mothers, we hope that the morning tea reminded you of how important you are to us.

The annual Good Shepherd Feast Day, which was celebrated on Wednesday the 2nd of May, was an exciting day for staff and students, and a great chance to celebrate the school and its many achievements. The Year Five and Six choir led the singing, which was a beautiful feature of the service. It was lovely to see so many parents at the Feast Day Mass. Students, parents and staff alike came together to celebrate mass at the Parish church before returning to school to pamper their mothers with a delicious morning tea. The students were treated to a tasty sausage sizzle lunch that was barbecued by some fantastic parents under the culinary supervision of Father Andrew! The whole school gathered on the oval and enjoyed a picnic lunch together. The schools colours of red, white and blue were well represented by the students, who were dressed in casual clothes for the occasion. Learning activities for the day were based around the

Miss Shaw, the schools sport teacher, coordinated a terrific tabloid sports carnival, which took place in the beautiful surrounds of the school. In the beautiful sunshine, the students and staff had a wonderful afternoon participating in the highly entertaining activities. What we lacked in skill and technique, we certainly made up for in laughs, fun and good sportsmanship. The Feast Day was a wonderful opportunity for us to celebrate all that makes the Good Shepherd Community so special.

Over 500 schools, groups and businesses, in 30 countries are changing the future of health and nutrition, and to celebrate, the Roleystone Community College held its own Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution Day on Saturday 19th of May. It was a fantastic day of food education and fun, all made possible by The Grow Project, a community driven initiative aimed at developing and supporting eco-conscious sustainability programs in Roleystone. For only a gold coin donation, members of the public were able to enjoy yummy food, share their great ideas about eating and living healthier, make pizzas with Low Food Miles and locally sourced produce, and see RCC’s new sustainable water-wise veggie gardens. Food and nutrition information sessions started at 11am, with pizza cooking at 11:30am. Thanks to Mrs Greyling and the RCC’s Home Economics students, the pizza’s were great-tasting and good for you as well! The RTBC recently presented Shellie Fazio with a Life Membership for her outstanding contributions to the club. Shellie coached at RTBC for 13 years (including States teams), umpired for approximately 8 years, held several key positions with the committee for over a decade, and was the first coach to win a States title for the club. Shellie’s four sons Tristan, Callan, Sheldon and Leighton have also represented RTBC in tee-ball and baseball at various levels, and umpired numerous tee-ball games over the years. I was stoked to find out I had picked up a nice little prize for the photography section of the City of Gosnells Community Arts Exhibition. The biggest surprise however was when I found out the City had bought the piece for its own gallery. I thought it was a bit of a shame that more photographs weren’t entered, but as an overall exhibition of mixed arts, there were still some fine pieces on display. I must give many thanks to Paul Jarvis (www.pauljarvis. com.au) for his help and advice in setting up and printing my photograph.

By Dr Judith Congrene In the last 2 months I have been fortunate enough to have the pleasure of being surrounded by beautiful Arabian horses at two A-grade shows conducted by the WA Arabian Horse Association. The All Arabian Show, on the 24th and 25th of May, and the Arabian Trilogy, on the 5th and 6th of May, were both held at the State Equestrian Centre in Brigadoon. Both shows offered a variety of halter and ridden classes, with dressage tests also being ridden at the Trilogy. Both shows were very well attended, with competitors travelling from different parts of the state to contest the various champion titles and to support the Arabian breed. It was also a great opportunity to catch up with friends and enjoy the show atmosphere. As the registered owner of a purebred Arabian mare, Top Fancy Tamara, I was very proud to be showing her myself in halter classes, and to be facing the daunting experience of riding Tammy in the elite company of riders and horses. It is a very exciting, and sometimes intimidating environment for an
inexperienced rider, but it was a huge honour to ride my beautiful mare at the events. I was incredibly surprised and delighted to win the halter group for our mare age group, and to qualify for the Ultimate Arabian workout at the All Arabian show. A highlight at the Trilogy was riding our dressage test for the first time in the International arena. We placed in the Top Five for several ridden classes, which was a great thrill, but the most important achievement was the satisfaction of knowing that I had faced my anxieties about riding at such an elite event. Onwards and upwards! I am very grateful to Patricia Perry from Sabuny Photographics for her gorgeous photographs, which commemorate my special moments with Tammy.

Friends in Pastel From 6:00pm Saturday 19th of May to Sunday 17th of June, a new art exhibition will be held at Genesis in the Hills, showcasing the talents of pastel pals, Christina Verbrugge and Valerie Hewer. The two artists have been have been friends for many years, the last two of which they have spent together, painting frequently at each other’s homes. Christina was born in the Netherlands, arriving in WA with her family at the age of 12 in 1954. She was never without a pencil and paper, and constantly drew family and friends. She also enjoyed some tuition with top Perth artists. In 2010, she discovered her new medium pastels, which she loves because of the immediacy that pastel-painting gives to the images she tries to create. Valerie was born and raised on a dairy farm close to the city of Bunbury. From an early age she practiced sketching and painting as

European wasps continue to remain a threat this summer, and the public is being reminded to know how to recognise and report this serious pest. Department of Agriculture and Food senior technical officer Marc Widmer said European wasps were often confused with the common yellow paper wasp, as both were striped yellow and black. “However, there are a number of characteristics that will help to tell the difference,” he said. “Most notably, paper wasps dangle their back legs in flight. European wasps have a stout body, more like a bee and hold their legs close to their body. “Paper wasps are longer and thinner, and tend to hover. European wasps on the other hand fly quickly and purposefully.” Another difference is that European wasps have black antennae, while paper wasps have orange-brown antennae. European wasps are also attracted to meat products, including pet food, steaks or dead insects. Mr Widmer said any wasp attracted to meat was definitely suspicious. “One of the main concerns is that European wasps are attracted to outdoor dining, be it alfresco, a barbecue or the school ground,” he said. “In particular, drink cans are a danger because if a wasp crawls inside, the person could be stung in the mouth or throat. Stings from a European wasp are very painful and may be life-threatening.” Mr Widmer said fertilised queens arrive in freight from the eastern states, and the most common finds were in industrial areas, where major freight depots were located. However, queens can be transported anywhere. So far this summer 17 nests have been found - one in Kalgoorlie and 16 in metropolitan Perth, including one in Bassendean, one in Osborne Park and 14 in the Kewdale and Welshpool areas. Mr Widmer said Western Australia had been battling European wasps for 35 years. “Public reports of suspicious wasps are critical to locating and destroying any nests,” he said. “Local governments are also playing an important role, with some now taking part in the new ‘adopt-a-trap’ initiative.” A Gardennote providing wasp descriptions can be found on the Department of Agriculture and Food website www.agric.wa.gov.au. The public are urged to report any sightings to the Pest and Disease Information Service on freecall 1800 084 881.

Danyon Burge with the able assistance of his father David (of Roleystone), took their brushes and creative minds to the wall in front of the Telstra building in Jull Street. Danyon and David paint together in their home studio almost daily, so the change of space and subject made for a nice way to spend the last week of the school holidays together. Meeting and chatting to the passers by, as well as roping in some of the local kids to help out, made the project even more enjoyable.

Hot movie news out of Canada is the exciting announcement that Australianshot short film, ‘Hugh Jackman Saves the World’, by Canadian Director and Screenwriter, Lee Chambers, has won Best Screenwriter Award at the 2012 Northern Ontario Music and Film Award Conference. The 3 minute short film was shot in Perth Western Australia last July on 16mm film, with students from Roleystone District High School as part of the Make It Short Film Project, an annual Film Workshop developed by Chambers in 2005. His films having attracted Academy Award Winners such as Paul Haggis and Roger Corman taking part as Executive Producers. In its ninth annual year, the Music and Film in Motion Award not only recognises but is a showcase for exceptional talent in the Music and Film Industry in Northern Ontario, Canada. “To be recognised by your industry peers is both humbling and very exciting,” Chambers exclaimed. Help for hearing impaired in East Java • Local project helps East Javanese children with hearing impairment. • Eleven trainees in Perth recently to learn screening techniques. • Local organisations with hearing expertise to provide training. The lives of children with hearing impairment from East Java will improve after 11 Indonesian nurses and teachers recently visited Perth to learn Helen Morton more about hearing screening. Minister for Mental Health; The nurses and teachers from the Karya Mulia Disability Services School in Surabaya are attending the Telethon Speech and Hearing Centre for Children WA, WA Institute for Deaf Education and Ear Science Institute Australia for three weeks to learn basic screening and intervention methods for children with hearing impairment. Disability Services Minister Helen Morton met the trainees at the WA Institute for Deaf Education in Cottesloe with Patricia O’Sullivan Humanitarian Project (POHP) President Trisha Henderson. The Disability Services Commission provided the POHP with $30,000 for the visit, in addition to $20,000 in 2011 to support a scoping visit to East Java by key project members and to report on services and training. “WA has a Sister State relationship with the East Java Provincial Government and, to mark its 20th anniversary in 2010, provided $100,000 for school repairs,” Mrs Morton said. Hard fought 2012 Floorball campaign The Redbacks Floorball Club (RFC) recently returned from their annual campaign at the 4-day long 2012 Australian Floorball Open in Victoria, run by the Australian Floorball Association. With a contingent of 36 people (players, organisers and parents) our senior and junior teams travelled to Victoria and fought their way through the tournament’s game plays. Our seniors made it into the semi-finals and ended up in 5th place out of 12 teams. Our juniors were grand final runners-up out of 5 teams. We had some great games, so thanks again to all who’s support made it possible. We hope we can continue this! Great News!!! – Perth median property prices have posted a consecutive quarterly increase suggesting that the market is slowly turning around. This return to more ‘normal’ market conditions has been noted by Mr David Airey – REIWA president and he has stated that he believes that the worst is now behind us. Overall market improvement is underpinned by: - Reduction of interest rates and improving consumer sentiment. - First Home Buyers (FHB’s) who are not overly concerned with politics and the economy are remaining clearly focused on purchasing their first home. FHB’s comprise of 20% of the marketplace and are buying entry level stock allowing people to trade up. - Total number of properties on the market in the first quarter of this year rose by 6% whilst total numbers of dwelling sold jumped by 13%. The negative trend in property prices has clearly turned and with the prospect of another interest rate reduction pending at the June RBA meeting – the market is looking positive for the future. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the founding of Shito-ryu Karate-do Kofukan (International) Association, of which Kofukan Karate Roleystone is a member. This month also marked the 21st annual visit to our Western Australian dojos by Shihan Tomiyama, the association’s most senior instructor. A special full day of training with Shihan was held at the Roleystone dojo on 12 May, attended by our senior instructors and students from the WA dojos located in Roleystone, Kwinana, Warnbro, Mandurah and Kalgoorlie. Shihan presented Certificates of Appreciation from the Association to longstanding Sensei’s Matthew Beaumont (WA Association President), Karen Hollings (Warnbro), Mark Weston (Kwinana), Brian Chambers (Kalgoorlie) and of course, our own Darren Brooke (Roleystone). Sensei Matt was also awarded the rank of 6th Dan Shodan (black belt) by Shihan, in recognition of his dedication and contribution to the style. Sensei Matt was

hobbling about on crutches after rupturing his achilles tendon, but also managed to present Shihan with a WA Kofukan jacket in appreciation of his years of assistance. Shihan’s annual week-long visits ensure worldwide conformity of our karate style by giving most of our students the opportunity to train with him. Specialised black belt classes are also held to ensure the quality of instructors and senior students. A senior grading is conducted by Shihan at the end of each visit, giving senior students the opportunity to progress beyond the rank of 1st Dan Black belt. With presentations out of the way, Shihan conducted morning and afternoon two-hour sessions at our Roleystone dojo. Beneath his dignified and calm exterior, Shihan has a cheeky sense of humour and is happy to give hands-on demonstrations of his remarkable karate skills. He adapted basic fighting moves and combinations to suit different builds, ages and ranks, for both men and women. All who attended agreed that the sessions were fun and productive and well worth the odd bruise and aching muscles the next day! When the Roleystone Community College opened with a newly designed college uniform, the big question for some was what to do with all of the old style uniforms. It seemed such a waste to simply throw them away. The solution came from an initiative conducted by the Rotary Club called “Donations in Kind”. This organisation distributes educational resources to areas of need throughout the world. Their coordinator Rachel Sheffield was all too happy to have us involved. We launched the “Drop off and Pick Up” campaign, where parents and students were asked to drop off any old good-condition uniforms they had from Primary or High School while they picked up their new items for RCC. We had large collection boxes set up at the college for the old uniforms, which were then kindly sorted and packed by Jackie Williams, Alison Lougher, and myself, all with the help of RCC
The V8s have come and gone, and Perth’s memories will undoubtedly fade until they are rekindled next year. However, still very fresh in some minds is Ashendon First Intervention (AFI) Inc, a not-forprofit organisation which provides fire and heavy rescue support, as well as vehicle extrication, to the WA Rally Championship, and other high profile events such as Targa West and the V8 Super Cars. Their professionalism and success in previous rallies has made them household names within the handrails, lighting & security doors rally community, and as such, the V8 Super Car organisers were eager for AFI to make sure any serious incidents at their prestigious event would be dealt with in a timely and professional manner, ensuring the best outcome for all. To that end, AFI sent half of their equipment to the V8‘s at Barbagallo Raceway from the 4th to the 6th of May. With early starts and late finishes, the fourteen men and women from AFI finished off their weekend with a managementorganised BBQ for a great job well done. Besides being the only incorporated Western Australian motor sport fire and heavy rescue group accredited by (CAMS), our success is largely due to the professional training we conduct, the commitment of our team members and of course, our sponsors, Fire & Safety WA, ACE Industrial, SGB Electrical and Safety and Emergency Training Services (SETS).
