The Kanyana Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre has it’s annual Open Day on Sunday 6th of May from 10am to 4pm. The event will feature a range of stalls and free children’s activities, so come along and help raise much-needed funds for the sick, injured, orphaned and displaced wildlife. The RoleystoneKarragullen branch of the Bendigo Bank celebrated its 5th Birthday on the 31st of March at the local shopping centre on Jarrah Road. On the whole, it was a most enjoyable occasion, and everyone at the Bendigo is looking forward to their next milestone celebration. See inside this issue for some great pictures of the day. The hills are alive with the sound of music, and Roleystone’s very own man of music is to thank for it. Joel Sheard has a much loved past time with violins, which he has taken a step further by conducting open workshops in violinmaking. Read the full story on page 14 and 15. The Roleystone Community College will soon be on

the big screen for all to see. The College recently was selected along with 3 other schools to have the Greenfingers team from Guru Productions come and create a sustainable garden for them. The show will be aired on Sunday 22nd and Sunday 29th of April on Channel 7, between 5:30pm and 6:00pm. A team of students and teachers recently visited Tass1 Trees Nursery, to find out more, check out the great story and photographs on page 16 and 17. The change of seasons has also brought a change of sports for many Roleystone residents. Now is the time to put on your club colours and shout out for your local teams. Look inside page 18 of this month’s Valley Reporter for the Roleystone Senior Football Club’s 2012 fixtures. There are nine Cross Park home games, so come along and enjoy! My Easter Offering – Resurrection Flower Ever since coming to Roleystone back in 1956, during late March and early April, I have gazed in wonder at the beautiful flowers that spring up in clumps and rows along the roads, streets and highway. After many scorching summer days, the Sol King (the Sun) seems to lose his power, and

the flowers unexpectedly begin to slowly regenerate from the dry, hardened ground. The long stems sprout forth into beautiful bursts of white, pink or red blossoms that live for about a month before returning to their earthy crypts to await another resurrection day. The Easter Lily, officially known as Amaryllis Belladonna, can generally be seen in the older parts of the community, so it must have been a flower cherished and appreciated by the pioneers. When I see them flowering, I know our battle with Sol is over for a while, and that Easter is on its way. To me, it is a symbol of the crucifixion and the resurrection. Benjamin Seabrook, Roleystone. I am writing to express my dismay at the actions of certain people who, on the early morning of April 12th, hit a large grey kangaroo on Peet Road. I understand that these animals can sometimes come out of nowhere, and I cannot fault anyone for hitting a kangaroo, but if you do, at least have the decency to pull the carcass off the road. This large dead kangaroo was left in the middle of the lane, presenting a hazard to all road users. It’s unlikely that the road was busy at the time you hit the kangaroo, so there is really no excuse for not stopping and doing the right thing. I have seen this sort of lack of care on several occasions around Roleystone, sometimes with people’s pet (mostly cats), which is even more disappointing to see. Rob Kidd, Roleystone.

Armadale resident Katie Trinder has been recognised at the 2012 Disability Support Worker Awards as an up-and-coming leader in the disability sector. Announced at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre in March, the annual event - now in its fourth year - is hosted by National Disability Services WA in partnership with the Disability Services Commission. A finalist for the Emerging Leader Award (sponsored by Ansvar Insurance), Ms Trinder was acknowledged for her role as a support worker for Nulsen. “Katie has shown great creativity in meeting the needs of individuals while forging strong and supportive bonds with families and carers,” Commission Director General Dr Ron Chalmers said. “She does her best to use every situation as an opportunity for people to learn and practice new skills and experience enjoyment and success. “By creating twoway communication books for one family, they were given reassurance about the quality of their son’s life and allowed them to have a greater connection with their son and the workers who support him.” NDS WA State Manager Terry Simpson said his organisation was proud to host and celebrate the annual Disability Support Worker Awards. The awards recognise the outstanding achievements and contributions made by disability support workers in furthering the quality of life and inclusion of people with disability in Western Australia. The Kalamunda Chamber of Commerce is proud to be present the Bickley Harvest Festival on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th May. This community-based festival is a showcase of the picturesque Bickley Valley and is proudly supported by the Shire of Kalamunda and the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council. The Bickley Harvest Festival is held annually on the first weekend in May. The festival presents visitors with a glorious taste of the Bickley Valley including many fine wines, cider, food, arts and crafts, entertainment as well as a myriad of autumn colours throughout the picturesque valley. During the festival, artistic talent will be on show from the local arts and crafts groups to boutique owner operated wineries, offering tastings from their hand crafted wines that employ the same methods of cool climate production as the Margaret River region. Meals will be available at many venues as

well as locally grown organic fruit and vegetables, free range eggs, devonshire teas, organic chocolates and other local produce. Many of the participating venues feature entertainment such as live music. Last year’s event attracted crowds of approximately 2,500 predominately from across the Perth metropolitan region. Visitors are encouraged to pick up a Harvest Festival Map and visit participating venues across the weekend. The big change for 2012 is the reintroduction of a Bus Service. Visitors will be able to park and ride, allowing easier access to more venues and reducing parking issues. Guests at the launch event were presented with a range of wines from the contributing venues, complimented with matched canapés. Highlights included a presentation of native animals from Kanyana Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre and presentations by selected winemakers.

In fact, the school mission statement has been adapted to highlight the quality, ‘Excellence in Learning through Faith, Love and Laughter’. One of the teachers, Mrs Diana Newman has lived up to this expectation by being awarded the Catholic Education Award of Excellence. Specifically, the award is for excellence in her work in the Bidjara Project. The project was started in 2011 and formalised the educational use of the school’s unique environment and animals. Students in the project enjoy the experience of working in the ‘outdoor classroom” by engaging in activities such as the growing of vegetables, caring for the chickens and goats, and cooking seasonal vegetables. The project provides an opportunity to further develop literacy, numeracy, technology and social skills while creating friendship and leadership opportunities. Easter Egg Raffle Good Shepherd has a wonderful tradition of an Easter Egg Raffle. The Parent Group collect eggs for weeks that are kindly donated by the parents. This year a large basket of the eggs were donated to Centrecare for children who would otherwise not receive any eggs. On a special day after the whole school walked the story of Jesus through the Stations of The Cross, the raffle prizes were drawn. Lots of happy children were winners of many Easter Egg prizes.

Muddy Bear Hunt As part of their exploration of the text We’re Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen, the Kindergarten students at Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School Kelmscott went on a messy, muddy bear hunt. Get Up Close & Personal at Kanyana Open Day

The Roleystone branch of the Bendigo Bank celebrated its 5th Birthday on the 31st of March at the local shopping centre on Jarrah Road, and thanks to everyone who joined in, it was a great event. The free samples of locally made birthday cake drew in the crowd like bees to flowers, but they stayed for the wonderful friendly atmosphere and a chance to get in the raffle. The winner of the competition, which involved guessing how much money was in the Bendigo Piggy Box, was Jack Rigby. Congratulations Jack! It was a great opportunity for Branch Manager Tony Jacobs and other bank staff to socialise with their loyal customers and neighbours, as well as a great time for the Bendigo Piggy to make an appearance. Thanks to local artist Wendy Van der Laan, who offered free face painting, the next generation of savers in the area were instantly recognisable. Give Your Old Car a New Lease on Life Firefighters are on the lookout for the community’s old unwanted cars to assist in vital road crash rescue training Last year, highly skilled Fire and Rescue Service and Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service firefighters attended 200 major road crashes that required rescue or extraction. There is a higher demand for donated cars at the FESA Training Centre this year, because there are more firefighter training courses scheduled. FESA Applied Training Officer Ian Joseph said the practical experience of training on real cars was vital. “Simulating road crashes using unwanted cars is essential for practical training, skill retention and ensuring any impact on patient injuries is minimised,” Mr Joseph said. “We teach techniques to gain entry to trapped vehicle occupants, such as removing the roof or doors, gaining access to the engine compartment or boot, removing glass from doors and windscreens while maintaining the structural integrity of the vehicle. “This year we’re running three Trainee Firefighting Schools, three Station Officer Development courses and a Skills Enhancement Program and all of these programs require vehicles for training. “If you have an unwanted car sitting in your driveway or taking up space in your backyard call us and we’ll gladly take it away for free,” he said.

April 14th will see an exciting Art Exhibition by Katy Jiang held at the Genesis in the Hills Vegetarian Restaurant and Café Katy Jiang is an abstract impressionist artist based in Roleystone, Perth, who’s art is a unique mixture of colour and content with an oriental influence arising from her Chinese heritage. Katy was born in Shanghai, China and showed a keen interest in art from the early age of 5, leading her to study traditional Chinese painting and then fine art for 8 years during high school. She won awards at several national competitions and was also shown in Paris before progressing to University, where she studied further into watercolour and acrylic styles. Covering landscapes, still life and figure sketches has given Katy a good background in shape and form technique. Katy has experimented with various styles and techniques from watercolour to pastel, acrylic and oil on various media such as rice paper, art paper and canvas. violin lessons to eager students, and providing instrument repair services, Joel is currently holding unique violin-making sessions in his humble workshop in the hills. According to Joel, there is no formal place in Australia where violin-making can be studied, and there are only about 3 or 4 violin makers in Western Australia. Since most violin makers prefer not to share secrets of the trade with those they consider amateurs, Joel’s open workshops are very unique. Joel’s journey to his unusual profession began whilst he was doing Christian missionary work in Kenya, in January 2007, when he was suddenly struck ill by an unidentified sickness. While recovering, Joel kept himself occupied by attempting to repair his violin. Despite his first try being “dodgy”, he continued improving his skills by asking for advice from professional makers and repairers. Over five years later, Joel has made three violins from scratch, is in the process of completing a fourth,and has helped teach others to make many more. He is even planning to make his first cello! His talent for producing individual instruments from blocks of wood has garnered much interest from the people he now shares his knowledge with. Joel admits that the process has frustrating stages, such as the difficult task of properly positioning the soundpost, a small piece of wood which greatly affects how a violin sounds in the end. However, he also says that the rewarding feeling experienced as a violin is strung up and played for the first time is unlike anything else. “Even though I now sell the violins I make, I get to feel the privilege of a maker, the satisfaction of accomplishing something”, Joel said. “The sounds and tonal quality of a violin will dramatically change in the first few months of playing, and it’s very fascinating to see how the sound matures as the instrument is exposed to new and different frequencies”. In order to ensure that the instruments’ bodies can withstand the power of musical frequencies and string tension, Joel sources and provides his students with the traditional woods used for violins and violas, spruce and maple, which are known for their acoustic qualities as well as structural strength. He has also had the opportunity to use a rarer King William pine wood, which he plans to use for his upcoming cello project. Joel currently hosts full day-long classes on some Saturdays, and is willing to make more spaces and

sessions available if interest demands it. Joel has high hopes for expanding his workshop and number of students, and is also looking to take someone on as an apprentice. For learners, the process of fashioning your own violin or viola will require a considerable amount of time, effort and commitment. If you attend a day-long session once every month, you could be holding your completed instrument in about 2 years’ time. Each daylong session costs $80, and (depending on the student’s needs) material costs could cost around $400 to $500, so think carefully on if you’re up to the challenge. Whether you play the violin, viola, or just have a passion for woodwork, learning how to make your very own instrument from scratch is a very rewarding experience to consider. Roleystone Primary School was an accredited Water Wise school for the past 10 years and this accreditation will carry through to Roleystone Community College. We were chosen, along with 3 other schools, to have the Greenfingers team, through Guru Productions, create a sustainable garden. children were treated to a sweet and sour taste extravaganza. Under the guidance of the horticulturist the children tasted raw sugar straight from the sugar cane which was grown on the property. They also got to taste native local bush fruit called Finger Lime and an African bush fruit called Miracle Fruit, which changes sour flavours into sweet. Mr Tassone shared interesting tips and background for growing plants. Tod Johnston and the crew were delighted with the students’ manners and overall behaviour. Armadale’s Rich Local Heritage Rewarded The City of Armadale’s distinctive heritage plaques are to be presented in the coming weeks to owners of a number of buildings across the City in appreciation of their preservation of heritage values. Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones, said the plaques recognise the cultural value of the sites and are a token of the City’s appreciation for those preserving the City’s heritage. “These properties represent a range of sites across the City including churches, orchards, restaurants and private homes which perfectly illustrate the diversity, history and heritage of the Armadale region,” said Cr Zelones. Heritage Plaques commemorate properties that are important to the community and have been recognised in the City’s Municipal Heritage Inventory. Ten properties will receive the plaques, including The Manse Restaurant, Oaklands Old Homestead, Darjeeling and a number of other significant properties. Previous recipients include Araluen Botanic Park, Roleystone Theatre, St Matthews Church, Wirra Willa Gardens, Narrogin Inn and Armadale District Hall. Heritage sites chosen to receive plaques in 2012 include: • Illawarra Orchard; Clearing and planting began in 1893. The first apple cool store in WA was built in 1899 and is still in use today. • Jesse Hammond’s Residence; Home was built in 1900s. Mr Hammond was a well-known contractor and author, his writing relating to early buildings in Perth, Contemporary Designs exploration and gold discovery in WA and Aboriginal Australians. Traditional Approach • The Manse Restaurant; Constructed in 1907, this building was home to pastors and now serves the community as a restaurant. • Oaklands Old Homestead; Built in 1910 by the Thomas family in Federation style. The home was named “Oaklands” by the Treeby family in 1920s. • Residence 2947; Hugh and Hulda Buckingham built the house, “Paramatta” in 1908. The home was bought by butchers, the Martins in 1950s. • Silas Rundle’s Residence; Built in 1900 by gardener/blacksmith Silas Rundle. • Uren Residence; Built in 1907 by Nicholas Uren. Two more out of control parties and a drug lab discovery in Armadale recently has prompted renewed calls for a 24hour manned Armadale police station by Canning MHR Don Randall. Mr Randall said it was further proof more needed to be done in the area to combat crime and antisocial behaviour. “The petition for a round-the-clock manned police station now has almost 10,000 signatures,” he said. “The petition was initiated by a local resident/ and the number of signatures to this petition highlight that residents do want this. “My office is contacted on a daily basis about crime/hooning and antisocial behaviour in the Armadale and surrounding areas. “Residents deserve to have action on this, to feel safe in their homes, walking down the street or catching the train. To get these issues under control would give the whole area a real boost,” Mr Randall said if the petition was successful in the State Parliament, he understood it could take some time before the station was operational 24/7, and therefore had asked the Barnett Government to bolster police numbers in the area in the meantime. He hoped more police would be in the Armadale area by the end of April.

These tournaments are very much a friendship series, with some players and families from past tournaments returning year after year, creating new great memories. The level of game is constantly being risen with displays of players’ skills being exceeded and sportsmanship shown. Over the weekend, all teams managed to play 6 games in total, including a Consolation Final and Championship Final. The Perth All-Stars were very successful throughout the tournament and managed to clinch all three age-group championships in both baseball and softball, keeping the overall title home safe in Perth. Congratulations to the two Roleystone boys Trent McDonnell and Aaron Newland on their teams success. A big thank must go to the many sponsors who make the tournament successful by coming on board, as well as to the team of volunteers, umpires and score-keepers. Another big thank you goes to each of the Country Directors who have taken on the daunting task of organising your teams and families. The YMCA and Shire of Kalamunda would like to inform the community and its valued customers that Kalamunda Water Park will be closed for the off season period from Sunday 1st April until November 2012. Shire President Donald McKechnie said, “The summer of 2011/12 saw the much anticipated re-opening of the community’s beloved Kalamunda Water Park (formerly Kalamunda Wet ‘n’ Wild). I would like to thank all of the local residents and loyal patrons from further a field flocked to come and enjoy the refreshed facility over the summer.” “I also look forward to all the new programs and initiatives YMCA is planning for the 2012/2013 season.” With over 3 million dollars spent on major refurbishment and the YMCA taking over management of the centre, Kalamunda Water Park’s first summer since the redevelopment was one of sun, fun, community development and social responsibility. The future is looking bright. The first year of operation has been an exciting period for the YMCA. Key highlights have included the introduction of the YMCA’s ‘Aqua Safe’ learn to swim program along with an expansion on programs and services offered from the facility. On March 11th the YMCA hosted its first ever national fundraising event, the ‘YMCA Swimathon’. Funds generated from the event went towards supporting YMCA’s benevolent programs. Over $100,000 was raised nationally. Kalamunda Water Park was the highest fundraising centre across Australia raising over $10,000 towards YMCA Perth’s Big Brothers, Big Sister’s Program. The success of Kalamunda Water Park was largely attributed to individual fundraising efforts of Michael Hanlin ($5,344), the Mullings family ($2,000), the Giolitto family ($855) and the Hasset family ($628). Many thanks needs to be given to all those who got involved and made this a great event while supporting a great cause. This year Australia Day came alive at Kalamunda Water Park with its first Australia Day Party held in balmy 40 degree temperatures. This was an action packed family fun day with Aqua inflatables, entertainment and various novelty events to keep both the big and little kids happy. There was some serious competitors in the pie eating competition and a record breaking 47m throw was achieved in the thong throwing competition. Asides from the highly renowned waterslides, the entertainment on the day helped to ensure that a memorable Australia Day was had by all in attendance. The YMCA’s believes in delivering programs to help build strong people, strong families and strong communities. Do you have a dirty car that needs cleaning? If so, then the Roleystone Shopping Centre is the place to be between 10am and 2pm on Saturday April 21st. The crew from Roleystone Community Church will be cleaning windscreens for a dollar, and washing whole cars for as little as five dollars. Even if your car doesn’t need washing, you’re welcome to enjoy a freshly cooked sausage for lunch. Funds raised will support development and outreach projects in Mexico, Romania, the Middle East and a Youth Program in Perth. Much of this work is being done by people with strong Roleystone connections such as Rob Chapman, who is growing coffee on rooftops in Mexico and Matt Fricker, who is Coffee trees growing on former Roleystoner, Rob Chapman’s training youth leaders.

Delights of Da Lat

Da Lat, capital of the Lam Dong province, is a small city situated in the central highlands of Vietnam, between Saigon and Nha Trang. Like much of Vietnam, Da Lat was colonised by French explorers and settlers during the 1890’s, giving the popular tourist location a very French flavour. Many houses still have a more European style, and are very beautiful. Night markets are held every night in the central area, and every Saturday and Sunday night, the area is declared a “walking town”, with no cars of motorbikes allowed. I had the opportunity to live as a local, going to market every morning to buy food for the day. I was honoured to be invited to many homes for dinner to eat traditional food. Da Lat is a very lucrative export industry centre, as well as one of Vietnam’s flower capitals. Orchids of all colours, shapes and sizes can be seen in every roadside market curtains&blinds stall, house and yard. They are truly a beautiful sight to behold. McFarleane House Learning Centre is situated at Germon Homestead, 27 Wheatley Street, Gosnells. Nearly forty years ago, our volunteers began teaching and assisting people from all walks and stages of life to learn, perfect and continue their unique and individual passions. We are still accomplishing this today, but we need to let the public know that we are here as a service to our community. Most of the time we do our own projects such as sewing, knitting, embroidery, card making, and crocheting etc. We also have workshops on Friday afternoons where you can all learn to do/make a new project, or just spend some time having a chat with coffee and cake. Our courses are run by volunteer tutors who are there to help and encourage you to pursue new projects. What we offer is both positive for the mind and body, so we invite you all to come along and have a chat to our volunteers and see if we can be of assistance to you. We have a table at McFarleane House with “home made” goodies produced by our groups that you can purchase.

Former Roleystone Theatre performer gets sweet role in Austen classic Former Roleystone Theatre performer Carmen Miles is taking to the stage this May in a timeless love story from one of the most widely-read writers of all time. Directed by Vanessa Jensen at Melville Theatre, Jane Austen’s Emma follows a beautiful and clever young woman who prides herself on her matchmaking ability – but while she’s preoccupied with romance, she’s clueless to her own feelings of love. When Emma takes on a young friend as her latest project, her well-intentioned efforts misfire, leading to a whirlwind of complications. Miles plays Jane Fairfax, a character she describes as sweet,

talented and gentle. “She is a young relation of a poor but well-liked family in Emma’s town but is fated to become a governess because she has so little money,” she said. “Jane irritates Emma and is somewhat disliked by her – but not for any greater reason than the fact Jane is reserved and her talent and work ethic make Emma jealous. “It’s very different from most of the roles I have played over the years because I’m often cast as nasty, powerful women like Blanche Ingram in Jane Eyre or the Baroness in The Sound of Music. “Poor, mild-mannered Jane is the complete opposite of that. “It’s a refreshing change but it means I have to do a lot more experimentation with my voice and body than I would usually do because it’s so unlike what I have done before.” Performing from age 16, Miles has appeared in numerous musicals with Roleystone Theatre and several plays at the Old Mill, Melville, Phoenix, KADS and Harbour Theatres including Great Expectations, Jane Eyre, Jekyll and Hyde and Sherlock Holmes and the First English Gentleman.
