Fiona Newland – EDITOR/PUBLISHER Firstly, a great big thank you to the Roleystone family that came and took our “FREE to good home” cubby house which was advertised in last month’s Valley Reporter. The response was so fast, it was gone the first day of advertising! Even a week after that, we continued to receive heaps of phone calls asking if we still had it or not. It’s so great to be reassured that the Roleystone community is reading the Valley Reporter. With the changing of seasons, we are also seeing the change over for the local sporting clubs. The Valley Reporter has some important dates for you to mark down in your calendars, such as those for registrations, “Meet the Coach” days, junior trophy presentations, AGM’s and youth trophy presentation dinners. If you have ever thought about volunteering for your community in any capacity, then I’m sure all our local sporting clubs would make you feel most welcome. The impending warmer weather is a sign that it’s also a good time to consider shedding those few extra
layers of clothing and weight. The Roleystone Recreation Centre is holding an Open Day on Saturday August 27th, from 9:00am to 3:00pm, where you’ll have the great opportunity to pop in and take a look around. The other day I was a witness to acts of both sheer idiocy and astounding bravery, all within a few seconds of each other. Although I was sure of which was which at the time, having seen another side, I’m not so sure now. I’ll let you be the judge. On the first afternoon of the recent school holidays, there was a roll over at the bottom of Holden Rd, and we rushed out of our house to help where possible. After picking up all the blowing papers off the road, (which one impatient 4WD driver pushed his way through) I went a little way up Holden Rd to attempt to slow down the traffic coming around that last corner, and so prevent a second or third accident from occurring. Most of the people out driving that day were well enough versed in “road happenings” to realise I wasn’t on the side of the road for my health, and heeded the warning. By now the police, firetruck and and tow truck had arrived, and the driver had extricated himself from the rolled vehicle, so he was all right. The firies were redirecting the traffic that was closer to the accident, the police were investigating the scene and the ambos were doing their thing. The fire truck had parked such that the uphill lane was blocked, meaning that drivers coming down couldn’t see the
scene until level with me. At this point, a driver, travelling (hopefully?) at 60km/h, came down the road, completely ignoring my initial signals. Even when my signals became more frantic, and I shouted “Slow down!” he did nothing to decrease his speed. Luckily, my shouts caught the attention of a firemen nearer to the roll over, who stepped out onto the road, in the path of the oncoming car, to stop him. I was having visions of broken knee caps, legs and other parts of the fireman flying in different directions, but thankfully the driver stopped just in time. I was later told by my hubby, who was at the scene, that the driver was told off by the fireman, and that the police officer also commented on his speed. I’d like to think that the driver was the idiot and the fireman was brave, but then again, maybe not? It was quite a risk the fireman took to stop the driver, but I know that of the two, it would be him who has my undying respect, no the speeding, inconsiderate driver. I would just like to say how lucky I think it was that only one car and one driver were involved. I know it happened in front of at least one other vehicle. On any other day in Roleystone, you would be bound to hear the wondrous sounds of small unregistered bikes being ridden on the road. My brother has seen groups of up to three riding along Holden Rd. What parent lets their child ride completely unrestricted on road reserves? If this had happened at another time, it’s possible they could have scraping children off of the road and out of the grilling of this vehicle. You can’t say accidents don’t happen. Earlier that same day, another couple just up the road were nearly cleaned up when another speeding vehicle momentarily lost control as they came around the corner. I know of 3 accidents on the corner of Holden Rd and Brookton Hwy that have happened in the last 2 years, with even more in the surrounding area. Life is precious, keep your children off the roads if they are unlicensed in any sense of the word. On the side, there is a small issue that someone at the roll over may be able to solve for me. When I rushed out of the house, I had the DVD remote in my hand, which I put on the ground at the top of the drive after picking up the papers. We haven’t seen it since, although the police officer said it was seen by the big tree. If anyone picked it up, perhaps thinking it belonged to the driver, could they please return it to 2 Holden Rd. In response to the article in last month’s Valley Reporter regarding the skate park upgrade, I wish to deviate and comment on the concerning lack of child supervision for the kids that regularly hang out at the Skate Park and oval. I find it hard to understand why a select group of parents think that it’s alright for their young children to hang out at the Skate Park and oval for hours on end unsupervised. Aren’t parents aware that used syringes are regularly left laying around and that older kids are buying cigarettes and alcohol from the shop for the younger kids? Don’t they stop and consider what a nuisance their kids can be when they’re in the shops every 5 minutes because they’re bored? I myself have school-aged children, and there is no way that I would let them hang out at the skate park unsupervised, regardless of whether or not their friends are allowed to. When they are at such a young age, it is just asking for trouble. I think it’s a case of more cents than sense for these parents, who are obviously more concerned about being liked by their kids than being a responsible parent. I hope for your child’s sake that they don’t get hooked on drugs or worse because of the lack of due diligence on your part. clear the front yard, and when I managed to capture this photograph they were just starting to tackle the backyard. When the clean-up of the property is complete, it will be far more manageable for the resident, and will be something he can enjoy instead of worry about, thanks to the Roleystone Volunteer Fire Brigade.
Just a brief newsletter this month to inform all of our members and friends that I have again taken on the role of Club President. (Who said I wasn’t a glutton for punishment?) We had the AGM recently, where a few new faces put their names forward to join the committee. It is also great to have Alan Mazzucchelli and Margaret Munn stay on in their roles as Treasurer and Secretary, with Geoff Munn elected as Vice President. I sincerely look forward to working with all committee members in the year ahead. Don’t forget that Club Membership fees are now due. I realise that we are going through some tough times with the Club at present, but hopefully we can all pull together and support the Club and the committee. I urge all of our members to come into the Club INC and make use of our great local facility. We have meat raffles on a Friday night, along with the Membership Draw. Also please show your support for the meals currently being provided on Wednesday and Friday nights, they are very reasonably priced. I should also mention that we have a Friday Night Pool Competition played in our very
friendly atmosphere! Come up and see for yourself, you will be warmly welcomed. We will run the occasional function at the Club and these will be advertised on the various notice boards. A Melbourne Cup Luncheon is planned for Tuesday, November 1st, so keep this date in mind, it’s sure to be a fun day. Tickets will go on sale very soon, so get in early. It would be very remiss of me not to mention the hard working Manager Andy and his two girls, Carla and Robyn, who always do a magnificent job, and are a credit to our Club. Well done to you all for your contribution. I also wish to pay my respects to the Bowls and Darts Divisions of the Club, they all contribute considerably to the Club and it’s progress. Finally, I’d like to express my gratitude to the Club’s outgoing President Ian Mountford. He has done a great job in keeping the Club going along with his committee over the past year, which I know is no easy feat. One such project was presented when a Roleystone resident received a notice from the City of Armadale to clean up his property. It is almost six months to the day that saw the Perth Hills bushfire rage through Roleystone and Kelmscott on February 6 and this week marked another milestone on the road to recovery. The final large scale demolition has been completed by the City of Armadale. Exactly 60 houses have been completely demolished and tested and cleared of any possible contamination and are ready for on-sale or rebuild. Another 26 minor structures, eg studios and outbuildings, have also been removed. The process of the large scale demolition was managed by the City of Armadale as a result of the Council lobbying for extra resources to assist across the damaged region.

Lord Mayor’s Distress Relief Fund - Perth Hills Fire Appeal The 6 February 2011 fires in Kelmscott and Roleystone resulted in the loss of over 60 dwellings with other damage incurred on many surrounding properties. The Lord Mayor’s Distress Relief Fund (LMDRF) established an Appeal to assist those who were impacted by the fire. Over $3.7 million was raised by donations from the three tiers of government, businesses, schools, organisations and the general public at large. On 9 August 2011, a second and final disbursement of $1.528 million was made. With a total of $3.716 million now disbursed between 116 applicants, the Appeal has been fully acquitted. The majority of grants have been distributed to those who lost their dwelling. The Perth Hills Fire Appeal has now
closed. Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi said that the LMDRF Board acknowledges and genuinely appreciates the invaluable local knowledge and assistance with disbursement recommendations provided by the City of Armadale during the past six months. “The generosity of mainly Western Australians who donated has helped to provide a positive footing from which to start the necessary rebuilding process,” Ms Scaffidi said. “To all who donated, thank you. Sincere and best wishes are extended to all people affected by the February fires from each member of the LMDRF Board,” she said.
RETIRING FROM COUNCIL I would like to advise you all that I have decided to retire from my role as your Council representative with the City of Armadale, and shall not be re-nominating for the position. I have represented the community of Roleystone and Karragullen from 1992 to 1998, and then again from 2002 to 2011. It has been an amazing, character-building journey that I will never forget. While there have been many challenges, there have also been many great victories. I am looking forward to having additional time to spend in far north Queensland with my son Michael and his daughter. It will also be great to have more time to paint, write, and to commit myself more fully to my role as Chair of the South East Centre for Urban Landcare (SERCUL), which has grown into the largest landcare organisation in Australia. I will still be involved in some community endeavours, such
as the senior’s housing project, but to a lesser degree. I recommend the role of Councillor to anyone who has the time and believes they have the ability and drive to represent our community, and, (along with other Councillors) the whole of the City of Armadale. I can guarantee you will never stop learning, you will meet many people, make new friends, meet real challenges and really grow as a person. You will need the support of at least 7 other councillors, so don’t go in with a single-minded approach. This is about making a commitment to the community of the City of Armadale, using an an open mind and enjoying the experience. I would really like to talk to anyone who believes they would like to take up this challenge. Nominations open September 1st – my term will officially end October 15th 2011. Cr. Pat Hart.
I write this letter not as your councillor, but as an individual community member with my own personal opinion. I am extremely disappointed that there are a number of people making concerted efforts to have the primary school oval left when the seniors independent living project is approved. While I believe some of the trees around the oval should be retained, I also believe that the whole site should be used for the Seniors project. This may be the only chance we will have to give the older members of our community the opportunity to continue living in Roleystone when their larger homes are too big to manage. While it may be a staged approach, I believe every square metre should be left for this project. The senior members of our community are not demanding, and considering how much they have contributed to our community, I think they deserve the entire site for the project. It’s saddening to see the younger members of Roleystone putting up such a fight to reduce the size of the project area so that the oval will still be available for their limited number of events. The Reserve Bank of Australia’s (RBA’s) official cash rate is currently at 4.75% and has remained at this level since late last year. Retail banks add a margin % on top of the RBA’s cash rate when offering their lending products to customers e.g. Bendigo Banks current variable package rate is 7.10%. Banks also offer fixed term rates which are currently at a lower percentage rate than the variable rate attracting customers to fix their loans for a period of between one to five years. A number of lenders have decided to slash their fixed interest rates post the recent international financial uncertainty. Loan Market‘s chief operating officer Dean Rushton has said fixed rate cuts were a reaction to the global share market volatility with lenders moving quickly to adjust rates in advance of a cash rate adjustment by the RBA. Mr Rushton said lenders wouldn’t be rolling out price cuts without a strong feeling that a rate decrease by the RBA is now on the cards. The City of Armadale can provide up to $1,000 for initiatives that benefit local residents and Round 1 of the 2011/2012 Community Grants Program is now open. Not-for-profit organisations such as sporting clubs, schools, welfare, arts, cultural, youth and seniors’ groups based in the City of Armadale are eligible to apply.
The City’s grants help community groups provide important services and activities for local people, said Armadale Mayor Linton Reynolds. Your group is eligible to apply for a community grant if it is: (a) incorporated, or can be sponsored by an incorporated group, (b) located in the City of Armadale, (c) financially sound, and (d) can demonstrate a matching contribution, either cash or in-kind. This September and October, he is hosting a series of acting classes at the Blue Room Theatre and Koorliny Arts Centre to help amateurs who want to tread the boards for the first time. “I see a lot of people trying to get their foot in the door at auditions, but it’s often a catch-22 situation,” Longman said. “People need experience to audition correctly, but they need to do it the right way to gain that experience. For this reason, the first series of classes is targeted specifically at beginners.” Since 17 years of age, Longman has been involved with a variety of theatres, including Skipping Stone, BSX, Playlovers, Harbour, Old Mill, Deckchair, the WA Youth Theatre Company, Irish Theatre Players
and the WA Academy of Performing Arts. He was even nominated in the annual Finley Awards for directing “The Pillowman” last year. He recently directed “A Lie of the Mind” for the Blak Yak Theatre, was assistant director to Marisa Garreffa’s “Aesop and his Fables” with the Barking Gecko Theatre Company, and also performed in Chekhov’s “Three Sisters” at the Dolphin Theatre.

Smarter than Smoking and the South Metropolitan Public Health Unit – Armadale, have invited schools within the City of Armadale to take part in an exciting Youth Smoking Prevention Project in 2011. The Smarter than Smoking Young Directors’ Festival aims to actively engage at-risk youth in smoking prevention through an innovative, multimedia project in which students are given the opportunity to create their own anti-tobacco commercial. Short-listed schools have applied to Healthway for a SMART School Grant for financial support to complete the Project and if successful, schools will create and produce their commercials over Term 2 and 3 this year. An Awards’ Night will be held in Term 4 to showcase the commercials to participating schools, their families and the wider community. Awards in various categories of excellence will be presented and the overall winning commercial will be screened at local cinemas. Books on Wheels service for elderly and disabled A unique service for elderly and disabled people to go to the library is working well thanks to the Seville Grove Library in conjunction with Armadale Home Help. Books on Wheels is a service to assist residents visit the library by bus so they can choose their own library materials. Armadale Mayor Linton Reynolds said, “The Books on Wheels group meet on Wednesday mornings from 9.30am11.30am where they can borrow library materials, have a social get-together over morning tea and pop to the shops next door. “It’s a wonderful service that provides for elderly or disabled who are unable to transport themselves and provides a social activity whilst choosing which books or music you would like to take
home”, said Cr Reynolds. Armadale Home Help will visit you and conduct an assessment which involves filling in some paperwork and letting you know about the services. There is a small fee charged for the bus service. Books on Wheels runs for eleven months of the year (the service closes over the Christmas period). Morning tea is provided as well as access to special events such as the yearly Seniors Christmas Party. New members are welcome. No carbon tax compensation for retailers, consumers A new survey from the Australian Retailers Association reveals a massive 83 per cent of retailers expect consumers to spend less as a result of the carbon tax, with a further 85 per cent of those surveyed believing the carbon tax will have a negative impact on business profitability. Canning MHR Don Randall today said the figures reinforce the discussions he had with Shadow Minister for Industry, Sophie Mirabella, and Roleysone Supa IGA owner, Ross Anile, when they visited the IGA supermarket in July this year. “The concerns for the retail industry as highlighted in the recent survey are exactly the concerns that Sophie Mirabella and I had when we visited the Roleystone Supa IGA last month,” he said. “Ross Anile – as a local, independent supermarket owner – also shares these concerns and unfortunately the survey cements these views. “Labor have never been keen to
support small business and the Gillard Government has deliberately chosen to ignore the harm this tax will cause for retailers such as Mr Anile, leaving this engine room of the Australian economy to fend for itself. “With consumer confidence at the lowest we’ve seen in years, retailers are already struggling and now they face the damaging prospect of toxic new tax. “The Government has produced household‐by‐household analysis to help Labor MPs sell the carbon tax but couldn’t be bothered assessing the impact of this new tax on Australia’s retailers.” The survey also found over one third of retailers will be forced to pass on price increases to consumers and jobs will be lost due to Labor’s carbon tax. “With the world economy in the state that it’s in, this is the worst possible time to be imposing a new carbon tax on Australian’s – both for retailers and consumers.”
Gillard confronted over White Water Park Prime Minister Julia Gillard faced the awkward question of what the Labor Government was doing to support the White Water Park project at last night’s The West Australian‐Sky News people’s forum. Canning MHR Don Randall said although the Prime Minister didn’t commit to the White Water Park, it still remained on the Coalition’s agenda. The question about the park, posed by a man identifying himself as Josh, occurred about halfway through the forum.

He said the Western Australian State Government was willing to invest $5 million in the new facility, with the Liberal Member for Canning Don Randall also willing to support the project by matching the State Government funding if the Coalition were to form government. Mr Randall said he was doing all he could to get this project off the ground, including putting a call out for private investment in April this year. The project has the support of both the City of Armadale and the Armadale Redevelopment Authority (ARA), with the ARA currently considering taking the project to the market through national and international advertising. “The Prime Minister said she didn’t even know about the White Water Park plan,” Mr Randall said. “But the former Labor candidate for Canning was well aware of this project and quite clearly said Labor would not be committing to funding it. “It just shows how out of touch the Labor Government is with the things that are important to Western Australians. “The White Water Park would really put Armadale on the map. It would be the only rapids facility in Perth, and only the second of its kind in Australia. This project needs to find a way ahead.”
Roleystone senior Football Club On Saturday July 30th, the Roleystone Senior Football Club hosted a Sponsors’ Day to formally acknowledge all the Club Sponsors and Life Members with a lunch and two games of entertaining football. At a very muddy Cross Park, Roleystone had two victories over an undermanned Jandakot team. In the reserve game Roleystone fought hard and finally put together some excellent passages of team football by captain Jai. Tye and Eddie Foulds played particularly well. In the league game, Roleystone proved to be the far tougher side in poor conditions. Big Jamie Burns played like it was a cloudless dry day, and Joel Harrison, Robbie Pearce and Michael Chmielewski worked hard all day to get their fill of the footy. the whole team gave a strong consistent performance. In the Southern River reserves game, Roleystone was soundly beaten by finals contenders Southern River. The larger and fitter side consistently won the ball and was able to make the most of their possessions with their clearly superior skills. Antony Foulds was outstanding for Roleystone and captain Jai put in another solid effort. In the league game, Roleystone were competitive for parts, but in the end the lack of numbers at training showed and Southern River were clearly fitter and far hungrier for the last finals spot. Roleystone’s Joel Harrison, Michael and Sean Kenworthy were all excellent players. Jeans for Genes Day was held on Friday 5th August at the Roleystone Primary School. A quick snapshot from the day were these two Roleystone Primary students Georgia Squire and Blake Lomas. Jeans for Genes is a major fund raising event for the Children’s Medical Research Institute. The Institute is an independent organisation committed to medical research into conditions such as birth defects, cancer and epilepsy. They believe that major advances in prevention and treatment come from research into the fundamental processes of life. Money raised from the gold coin donations on the day will be used to assist the Institute to prevent children’s diseases.

Steve, Elaine and all the staff at the Roleystone Recreation Centre would like welcome new and old members to their Open Day, which will be held on Saturday August 27th, from 9am to 3pm. The whole day has been scheduled so that people can come and go without any hassles, whilst enjoying the exciting fitness activities on offer at the Centre. Some of the classes we have include Body Tone, Abs, Fitball, Spin, Step, Boxercise, Circuit, Yoga, Hip Hop Fitness, Zumba, all of which are conducted by qualified instructors. We have our Personalised Training Consultants, who can conduct a body composition analysis and also give you some valuable nutritional information to help you get on your way to reaching your goals. The Centre still contains the three ever popular squash courts, all of which are readily available. Children are most welcome at the Open Day, where there is a free creche facility and free face painting. New to the Recreation Centre is our bright and freshly decorated Affinity Café, this will be officially opening on the 31st of August. It’s getting down to the “pointy” end of the season for Roleystone Netball Club, proudly sponsored by Roleystone Real Estate. A number of teams are in contention for the finals, in particular Lynne Blackman’s Junior 7 side, which is unbeaten so far! Roleystone has 13 teams participating in the Kalamunda and Districts Association competition and is – without being too parochial – an excellent and committed member club. Not only have our best players been representing the association in Perth and country carnivals, but three of them – Caitlin Williams, Sophie Boughton and Kate Bunten – have been good enough to be selected in the Darling Range Regional Squad. This is an outstanding achievement and well done to them! In addition, on any given Saturday, Roleystone has 10 or more players turning up early in the day to fulfill umpiring duties before and after their games. All of these girls have undergone training, exams and mentoring to be eligible

As we head towards the end of winter, we can look forward to the commencement of the new lawn bowls season. Prior to the start of the pennant season, our club will be hosting several events which are open to bowlers and visitors alike. Of course, the winter weather hasn’t stopped an intrepid band of regulars from turning up each Wednesday and Saturday afternoon to keep their skills honed. I’m reliably informed that Roger Williams, one of our newer bowlers, has often featured in the winner’s circle, while several other newcomers are making strong progress with Pictured: (above) Rival skippers Brian Betts and Pauline Smith each game they play. have been regulars among the bowlers during the winter months. Perhaps we’ll see the (below) Roger Williams sets a bowl on its way under the winners of this year’s watchful gaze of Bill Mitchell and Esme Martin. Roleystone Cup emerge from those who have been consistently on the greens. On Sunday 25th September the Roleystone Cup, which was held for the first time last year, will again be contested as an open event. The day will feature morning and afternoon games of lawn bowls along with a “Hot-Pot” style lunch and morning/afternoon tea. All of this will cost only $15 per person, and everyone has the chance to win great prizes. Anyone who is interested in giving lawn bowls a try is welcome to nominate for this event. Another feature of the coming season is a new category of membership, introduced for those who wish to join the club as social members. The next field day is a dieback treatment day to be held at Boulder Rock, Leslie on September 18th. Boulder Rock is approximately 8.5kms east along Brookton Highway from the intersection of Chevin Road, Roleystone. Treatment will commence at 9am and finish at 12 noon. We are less than seven months away from the opening of our new school ‘Roleystone Community College’, which is being formed by the amalgamation of our current primary school and district high school. The building works are progressing well and we now have a completed four classroom block and undercover assembly area. The new library and various extensions to areas such as the staff room are underway as is the construction of the early childhood block. Mr Peter Thatcher, Foundation Principal, hopes to invite parents to tour the school later in Term 3 and early in Term 4. We also have a College logo, motto and house names. The College uniform has been designed with navy blue as the base colour and features teal and white. Parents were given some very exciting news recently when it was announced that:
“FOUNDATION STUDENTS TO RECEIVE UNIFORM PACKAGE” The Parents Consultative Group are delighted to announce that every student enrolled in Roleystone Community College at the commencement of its foundation year of 2012 will receive a uniform package. Through the combination of Principal Peter Thatcher’s passions for education, fitness and emotional well being, the staff and students at Roleystone District High School have begun to receive the benefits. On Wednesday the 3rd of August the staff were introduced to the varied programs and initiatives being implemented in the effort to create a safe and supportive school. Luke George, an Educational Consultant from Best Performance facilitated an afternoon session where staff discussed the benefits and strengths of the Well Being Programs soon to be introduced into the school community.
All students are scheduled to participate in a Values Survey linked to the Curriculum Framework, so as to ascertain their general attitudes towards learning, the community, the environment, themselves, and others. In the Primary section of the school, the Virtues Program is running full steam ahead, led by Deputy Principal Phil Springett. The Rock and Water Program, which is based on fitness, body control and strength of mind, has shown great improvements with participants, and is steadily continuing to expand. Principal Thatcher is committed to a three day course that will allow him to become a Rock and Water Program instructor. Fourteen other teachers will now have a chance as well to attend the same course thanks to a $4000 contribution from the Parents and Citizens Group, and a $2,000 contribution from the Roleystone Community Alive Group. Other upcoming programs include Chicks and Blokes, Mentoring, Rainbows and a formal ‘House System’ within the new Roleystone Community College, beginning in 2012. The Chaplin Martin May works tirelessly four days a week supporting and mentoring students. Her door is always open, and students feel very comfortable discussing sensitive personal issues with her. According to Luke George, “Peter is really taking the phrase ‘every child matters’ to the fullest. He is inspiring his staff and students not to accept the status quo, but to change their attitudes and lives through physical experiences. I can’t wait to see the results of the Values Survey in twelve months time. I know the results will have improved due to the number of positive opportunities and experiences available”.

I am a local mother and music teacher who lives on Westborne Road. I have written many songs, but my latest effort has been for the Coopers Country Competition. Coopers has been supplying farmers with lice control products since 1843, and are offering an exceptional prize for the winner of their competition, including 2 days in a Sydney recording studio and the release of the song. My song, which was inspired by my father-inlaw, is called “Rain, Hail, Shine”, and is dedicated to The Farmer. A man of integrity, courage and unfailing spirit. He has worked the land his entire life, taking over from his father, and his grandfather before him. He teaches through example and has passed his knowledge to his sons and grandchildren. Like Coopers, my fatherin-law and his family have persevered through many hardships, all in the name of the love they have for the land, the sheep and the work they do. “He will not give up, he moves with all the changes...” These
lyrics sum up my father-in-law, and indeed all farmers I have had the pleasure to meet. I believe the spirit of Coopers is kept alive by the people that trust it to, as the song says, “Get the job done... despite the conditions... Rain, hail or shine”. My song is currently sitting at 4th place out of over 85 entries. The competition closes on August 31st, and I need people to vote for me. The competition is nationwide, so I am very happy to have gotten so high, but I would really like to go to the top. On August 11th, the RTBC committee held an extraordinary meeting Major to SponSor discuss age group changes initiated by the AK Strikers Tee-Ball Club. The committee voted and agreed to implement the new age group categories as then why not try Tee-Ball or Baseball at our local follows for the 2011 / 2012 season: • Under 8’s – must be in Pre-Primary 2011 / Years 1 or 2 in 2012; • Under 10’s – must be in Years 3 or 4 in 2012; • Under 12’s – must be in Years 5 or 6 in 2012. In a previous update it was stated that the Under 13’s Tee-Ball was set to continue, however this is no longer the case, and I apologise for any inconvenience this may cause people. A viable option for those players is to register for Little League Baseball. Baseball WA will be conducting Tee- Learn ball skills and teamwork. Hi Everyone, well we are getting close to the end of another great football season, and all of our mighty young tigers have once again done us proud with their skill and commitment. As a new President, it has been a year of learning and becoming involved with the youth of our community, finding out firsthand what a great bunch of young men they are. The mateship and support they give each other within their teams shows great community spirit, and is the basis for many life-long friendships. I would like to thank all the coaches, committee members, club volunteers, players and supporters for representing our club with such great passion and commitment. You have made me proud to be your club President. As we approach the finals, I urge all supporters to get behind our competing teams by turning up to barrack for them in black and yellow. The louder your encouragement, the easier our boys will hear it. Once fixtures are finalised, the club will ensure we let everybody know the venues and times. We are also hosting the 15’s finals at Springdale on Sunday August 21st, with the first match beginning at 11am, and the second at 1pm. We will need helpers on the day for canteen assistance, initial set up and match day official. If you can assist, please let us know or turn up at 9am on the day to help set up. If you happen to walk into Roleystone Supa IGA and you see a Roleystone District High School student pushing a pram with a baby, please don’t pass your judgement prematurely. Have a closer look first. Is it a real baby? Yes it is! What you’ll be seeing is a student taking part in the RealCare program with a “RealBaby”. A “RealCare” Baby is one of the most advanced infant simulators, used for Child Development Education, Teen Pregnancy Prevention, Career Training, Prenatal Visits and At-risk Youth Intervention. A “RealCare” Baby is made from soft vinyl and features real infant sounds to simulate a newborn infant. A “RealCare” Baby makes it possible for students to practise caring for an infant 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. During a simulation: • “RealCare” Baby cries for care at any hour, day or night. • The student is expected to figure out what their Baby needs,

such as feeding, burping, rocking or a nappy change. • The student wears a unique wireless ID to ensure accountability. • The “RealCare” Baby’s computer tracks its care and safe handling. • Detailed data is downloaded after the simulation, including the exact times of missed care and specific mishandling, such as a shaken baby, head support failure, wrong positioning or rough handling. The childcare students at Roleystone are very enthusiastic about taking their “babies” home, and the feedback that we get is very positive. It certainly opens their eyes to the difficulties and required dedication for such duties. We are aiming to give our students a learning program that supports the formation of a realistic attitude towards sexual activity and parenting. Hopefully we can lay the necessary foundations for them to make informed choices, including the decision to delay parenting until they are adults. Louren Greyling.

Thanks to the workings of YouthCare, who receive funding through local communities, churches, and government education departments, Roleystone High School has been provided with a Chaplain, available for four days of the week. This is a pastoral role which involves acting as a positive presence, as a peacemaker, program organiser, prayer, and listener. The Chaplain is not a teacher, but other duties will include helping and being available for appointments with students, staff and parents. Some of the Chaplain’s programs and activities that will create a positive influence in the lives of student are: • CHIC - Choices, Hopes, Identity and Connections. • The Breakfast Club, where you can find good nutrition and a social environment for students to connect with each other in. • Monday girl’s lunchtime activities, where kids have the opportunity to socialise and interact while making art and craft. • Mentoring programs, to help give encouragement through activities. These activities and programs will give students who have difficulties connecting, or are facing peer pressure the strategies they need to boost their confidence, trust and self-worth. Students will be able to confirm (for themselves) how much they actually matter in their homes, school and community, and will realise that there is really a place, future and hope for them in this world. Indonesian Cultural and Language Day 2011
Aussie of the Month awards were presented at the Yr 6 & 7 assembly on Friday 12th August. Ashleigh Griffiths is a positive and caring student who always displays excellent behaviour. A terrific ambassador for RDHS. BEN BARRY displays an excellent attitude towards all school activities. Polite, well mannered and always displays good sportsmanship. Congratulations Ashleigh and Ben! On July 27th, Roleystone District High School was bustling with extra students from the local Primary Schools which make up the Indonesian Language Hub. A grant received from the National Asian Languages and Studies in Schools Program (NALSSP) has supported the four schools in forming a hub which is collaborating in many 2011 initiatives to promote the learning of Indonesian. Each school chose 25 students to participate in a day-long rotation through four activities including dance, music, cooking and games. There was definitely something for everyone, which was proven by the way the students engaged in all the activities. The dancing was presented by Alfira and Multara from the Suara Indonesia Dance Group, based in Sydney. They performed and taught a number of dances from Sumatra, all in their traditional costumes, which captivated the students as much as their moves. The students also had an exciting time participating in a cooking lesson, where they were able to eat the food that was made. Their meals consisted of Mi Goreng (Fried Noodles), Krupuk (Indonesian Prawn Crackers) and Es Buah (a delicious dessert using ice shavings from a special machine). Enak sekali! (Yummy!) This session was run by Ibu Agnes from Osh5One, and her four lovely assistants. Iu Nur presented an interactive music lesson in which all the students were able to try their hand at playing the angklung, an Indonesian instrument made from bamboo. In the games session, the students were able to choose from a variety of Indonesian games, such as the game of Congklak, taught by Pak Wilfrid. The students participated enthusiastically throughout the day, gaining wonderful experiences, which they were more than willing to share with others in their feedback. All in all, it was a great success, which all the Indonesian teachers from the hub schools agree should be repeated next year. Thanks must go to these teachers, Kellie Brophy (Roleystone District High), Karen Wishart (Roleystone Primary), Joyce Arnold (Kingsley Primary) and Robert Rankin (Armadale Primary) for their combined efforts to making this possible. Aussies of the Month
The Society and Environment curriculum in Term 3 will extend students’ strengths by incorporating thinking skills with active peer group teaching-learning strategies under the teacher’s guidance and supervision. Students will work at varying paces and will be given a range of learning opportunities to suit their learning styles. They will be able to demonstrate what they have learned through openended assignments. Students who need extra direction will be given enriched tasks and structured assessments that will enable them to demonstrate their understanding of content, and as a result, to succeed. Term 3 also promises plenty of hands-on, outdoors and interactive learning opportunities. Thirty students from Yr 8 to Yr 10 are visiting the Water Corporation’s Advanced Water Recycling Plant in Craigie on September 13th. They will learn about Perth’s water options and view new water treatment processes, so that they will gain a better understanding of how the constant life of the water cycle and groundwater replenishment can sustain Perth’s water supplies. A bonus from this is the $500 bus fare reimbursement we won for being one of the first 50 schools to take the tour! The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) will take place in WA in October this year. An incursion is being planned from the Constitutional Centre in West Perth to enable our students to learn through hands-on activities and games. The focus will be CHOGM and Australia’s role in meeting the United Nation’s Millennium Goals as a member of the Commonwealth. 2011 is the International Year of Forests. We hope to participate in a Schools Expo at the Perth Hills Centre at Mundaring Weir in late September – the date and details of this will be finalised and made public soon. I will be attending the Rio Tinto Naturescape teacher preview in King’s Park on the weekend and hope to plan related outdoor learning activities this term. AARON HOME AFTER THE EXPERIENCE OF A LIFE TIME PERTH HEAT COLTS USA TOUR JUNE/JULY 2011 After 46 hours of travelling, (including a 15 hour stopover in Johannesburg) we finally arrived in New York, where we filled up the vans and trailers with tired baseball players and baggage and headed to our hotel. We were all sore and jetlagged from the long trip, and just wanted to shower and sleep, but we drove down to the local ballpark for afternoon training instead. Most of the fields we visited had multiple diamonds, since baseball fields are as common as AFL ovals are over here. We soon found out that the dirt on the fields over there was a lot softer and dryer than over here, so our pitchers struggled a bit with the fact that the mound would start to lose shape and a big hole would form after a couple of innings. We also found out that the grass on the fields was very long, which meant that when the ball hit the ground it didn’t go anywhere. One of my favourite tour games was when my team Junior Varsity played against Harlem RBI Stamford Babe Ruth. The game was played in Central Park in New York and the score was very close, right to the end. The Harlem RBI team ended up beating us, but they showed great sportsmanship after the game with their friendly attitude. They bought pizza and drinks for all of us and hung around for a bit to watch some older teams play after us. After the pizza and drinks, the Harlem coach called us all up into a group and presented me with an ‘International Independence Day Series 2011 Sportsmanship Award’ trophy for my efforts on the ball field throughout the game. In most of my games I either played third base or was relieving pitcher, and apparently the
Americans were quite fascinated by some of my pitches, and seemed surprised that we Aussies could move the ball just as well as they could. One of the many baseball fields we played on was just outside of Delaware, and reminded us all of the Kevin Costner 1989 movie “Field of Dreams”, what with all the cornfields surrounding us. We won about 9 games out of 19, which wasn’t too bad for a bunch of jetlagged Aussie kids. An especially fun part of the trip for all of the players was being in America for the 4th of July celebrations, which we joined in by buying some firecrackers from the local store and setting off at night in our hotel car park. A particular highlight for me was our 3-in-a-row win on Sunday July 17th. This included the Consolation Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and the Championship games in a Summer Sizzler Wooden Bat Tournament. All of this took place at ‘Sports At The Beach’, a 95-acre baseball facility located near beautiful Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. We spent five nights there, enjoying the on-site air-conditioned dorms, swimming pool, playground, 16 playing fields, 30 batting cages and a gift shop. We went to a series of Major League and Minor League baseball games at North-Eastern American stadiums such as Yankee Stadium, Fenway Park, and Oriole Park. We also had the opportunity to see the iconic Statue of Liberty, Niagara Falls, Ground Zero of the Twin Towers, and the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, rumoured to be the birthplace of baseball. Coming home and getting things back to normal after the quickest month of my life was really great. The trip was very well organised, and I will never forget the experiences I had over in America. Budding musicians in the City of Gosnells can gain new skills and take part in fun jam sessions as part of the free Catch Music program at the Amherst Village Community Centre. While at the verge, evaluate from the road, the likely effect of adjoining properties and their effect of fire spread to your own property. It may be necessary to communicate any concerns with your neighbours. Taking a proactive approach toward bushfire prevention with your neighbours may motivate them to reflect on their own preparedness. Neighbours and contact numbers To get the big picture an evaluation of properties adjoining your own is a valuable exercise. Particular attention should be made to neighbouring properties that are positioned in the path of prevailing summer winds in your area. After discussion with the adjoining neighbours whose properties may

impinge on your own in the event of a bushfire it may be possible to have a fuel reduction program implemented to afford greater protection to both properties. If this is not possible more attention to the fuel reduction on your side of the fence may have to be undertaken to minimise the risk. A strategy of pooling resources and helping to protect each other can be valuable although the degree of fire threat will dictate the limitations. Working together for fire prevention activities including fuel reduction and risk assessment is recommended. Consider extending this responsible approach to include all neighbours in your area. If it is achieved it may prove to be a very valuable exercise in the event of bushfire threat. Local Government or Fire Agencies in your State will be able to advise on the methods to achieve this outcome or if there are any community organised programs in your area. It may also be possible to assist in property protection of friends for example that may be distant from your own property. After protecting that property it would then be possible to withdraw and return to your own. Take extreme care while moving on roads from one property to the other. Swapping a complete range of phone numbers including mobiles and
workplace numbers with neighbours will ensure contact can be made for all incidents and emergencies not limited to just bushfire. A complete list of emergency contact numbers needs to be compiled. This could include Hospital, Local Government including after hour Rangers, State Emergency Services, Bushfire Emergency Hotlines, Power and Water Authorities for example. Have them conveniently displayed. The emergency contact number for Police, Fire and Ambulance is 000. The best way of contacting emergency services will be dependent on where your property is located. Some remote properties may require an alternative contact process and this will need to be established by those individual property occupiers. Fences Give careful consideration to the materials used for fences of open post and wire construction. If the surrounding area is free from vegetation and is maintained, wooden fence posts may be suitable. Evaluate whether steel or concrete posts would be better. With the latter two products the likelihood of straying stock as a result of fire damage after a fire has past is minimised. When planning a fence consider the inclusion of a gate in each boundary into adjoining properties.
While they can be chained and locked and are still an effective barrier between neighbours they are a valuable method of access for Fire Service vehicles that may move unhindered from one property to the next in asset protection. It is recommended that they be unlocked but kept closed in the event of an advancing bushfire if the properties have stock. It is recommended that privacy fences be constructed of colourbond metal type cladding rather than wood or brush wood construction. All fencing however must be kept clear of vegetation if it is to provide some integrity after the passage of a bushfire. Property identification Properties should be easily recognisable by a displayed Lot or Street number. Consideration should also be given to including residents or property name. This can be done on letterboxes, signs or kerbs for example. Some properties utilise a distinctive feature like an old plough, painted wagon wheel or milk churn for example that can be described to those trying to easily identify the property particularly responding emergency services. It is to be remembered that this information will need to be clearly visible at night.
