Just check out the photograph The Valley Reporter managed to capture of a tree that was recently hit by a lighting strike! (see page 4). Despite all the tragedy that has engulfed our locality in the recent weeks, it’s good to know that there are some wonderful people out there, helping out in any way they can. The Armadale Rangers recently did their bit (read their story on page 8), as did 3 Roleystone Primary School girls who got busy baking for charity. And of course there’s the crew of the USS Shoup, who volunteered to help clean up some of the properties in our community that were damaged by fire. It’s a really great thing to see - keep up the good work! After thirty-five years of operation, the Roleystone Country Club Bowls Division is in crisis. The district is in real danger of losing this important and well-loved recreational facility, due to a

dwindling membership that means not enough funds for maintenance. So don’t wait, act now. This community needs you! Go to page 19 for the full story. The Rock Inne Tavern has got some great live entertainment lined up for March and May. Have a look at their full page advertisement on page 27 of this month’s issue, and try a meal from their scrumptious menu next time you visit them. Have you ever sailed on a ship that is only 55 metres in length and only holds 40+ crew members? I double-bounced and... “Ouch!” I had to go to the hospital, then to Dr Ojo the next day, and then to see Steve at the Chemist. Steve was busy on the computer, but when he saw us he came out and looked at my big black and blue foot. First he got me some crutches, which he showed me how to adjust so they would fit me. Then Steve showed me how to put a bandage on my foot (a week and half later and it looks like a very rare colourful sock). It took about 20 to 35 minutes. Steve was great, even though he was very busy. The ladies at the chemist were very nice and Denice said “Abby have you done that horse riding?” I said “No way!” I think we have the best chemist ever. I would like to thank the very kind lady who stopped her car to help me the other morning. While I was walking my German Shepherd, we were attacked by a black dog which was loose. I had my six week old daughter in her baby sling on my front, and if this lady had not intervened, I could have been pulled over and my tiny baby hurt. I am very angry with the owner(s) of the dog in question, which has been reported to the rangers on many occasions, one such occasion being during my pregnancy when I was walking both my dogs. The black dog came at us and I was knocked over and dragged along on my back. Luckily, all I suffered was gravel burn, but since then I have decided not to walk both dogs together because of the risk involved. People should be at liberty to walk their dogs in peace without fear, and those who refuse to take responsibility for their dogs should not have them at all. Thank goodness for my kind Samaritan, to whom I am very grateful. Julie Turner, Roleystone.

Another freak storm swept through Perth’s northern and eastern suburbs on Monday 28 February. Blowing roofs off homes, blacking out 55,000 houses and prompting more than 170 calls for emergency help. The storm also hit several rural areas, but metropolitan damage was centred on the eastern areas of Ellenbrook, Middle Swan, Midland, Mundaring and Kalamunda. Our very own RoleystoneKarragullen Seniors Club in Jarrah Road managed to go unscathed but the tree at the back of the Club was hit with the full force of a lightning strike. With the winter season just around the corner let’s hope that lightning never strikes twice in the same place.

Community events – supporting bushfire victims The City of Armadale and a range of generous Perth organisations and businesses are coordinating community events in support of people affected by last month’s devastating Roleystone-Kelmscott bushfire. There will be bushfire recovery information and Community Development staff on-site at FREE events conducted by the City, including Concerts in the Park in Roleystone on 13 March and Armadale’s Memorial Park on 27 March and the Minnawarra Festival on 20 March. Community members can enjoy local bands and entertainers from Roleystone Musicians Club from 5-7pm at the Roleystone Primary School Oval on Sunday 13 March, while the Armadale City Concert Band performs from 5-7pm on Sunday 27 March. The Minnawarra Festival, hosted by the City at Minnawarra Park annually since 1992, features a huge variety of street theatre, community art projects, live music, craft, carnival amusements and cultural activities for all ages from 10-5pm on Sunday 20 March. The City is also proud to support a number of large, independent fundraising events being staged locally and throughout Perth to benefit bushfire victims. Araluen Golf Resort in Roleystone and Armadale Lions Club are holding an 18-hole, golf-themed fun run and activity evening on Sunday 13 March, proudly supported by Alinta. The day starts at 12.30pm with the fun run – individuals of any age, including children, plus teams and corporate groups can enter at a cost of $5 per person. There are helicopter rides on offer, the fun run

presentation ceremony at 5.30pm, followed by a food bazaar, auction, raffles and live music. Donations from the event go to Armadale Lions, who will use all money raised to directly assist families affected by the bushfire. Normally the Armadale Police Rangers hold a variety of activities at the Armadale Arena, but recently they only had one thing on their program; how to help their fellow citizens. It was in the midst of the Roleystone/ Kelmscott bushfire tragedy that the Rangers were happy to lend a helping hand. Armadale Arena became a bustling hive of activity when the devastating bushfire raged through Roleystone and Kelmscott. Residents who could not return to their homes were able to come to the Arena for safety, and received clothing, food and a

place to sleep. Many generous locals donated much-needed clothes to help the victims, but all the donations had to be sorted into categories (men, women, boys, girls and baby goods). The young men and women from the Armadale Rangers did a splendid job in sorting all these donated clothes. Clothing was not the only goods donated. A great deal of food was supplied, but also needed sorting and distributing. The kitchen needed regular cleaning and bins needed regular emptying to cope with the number of people using them. The young rangers

were all very helpful and put in a lot of effort that night. With the help of two adult supervisors, Darryl (Volunteer) and Ben (Instructor and the PCYC Armadale) the Rangers were able to make the tragedy a little less tragic for those most affected by it. Darryl and Ben were at the Arena for up to 19 hours a day over the course of the fire evacuation to help victims with whatever they needed. Their help and empathy was appreciated by many. Monitoring stations set up in & around fire damaged area The demolition and cleanup process for the recent Roleystone/ Kelmscott bushfire is underway. As part of that process the City will be undertaking air monitoring. Armadale Mayor Linton Reynolds said, “Air monitoring is standard practice with any large scale demolition. “Residents will see shoebox size containers on a stand that takes regular samples of surrounding air. “These monitoring stations will be placed in and around the fire damaged area and will be moved around by our contractors.

On Saturday 26 February, the Roleystone Neighbourhood Family Centre celebrated it’s 21st Birthday with a free Family Fun Day. There was a huge water slide, sausage sizzle, drinks, community displays and the unveiling of a commissioned artwork piece to especially commemorate the day. Long time local Roleystone resident and artist Jackie Hoeksema was asked to come up with something special to grace the front entrance of the Roleystone Neighbourhood Family Centre. With such a large canvas to paint, Jackie set upon capturing the lovely natural bushland with a typical Australiana theme. Gum trees, blossoms, grass trees and a multitude of native creatures can be found in Jackie’s masterpiece, which is sure to entertain guests as they go to and from the Centre. On the day a good crowd of people came through the doors of the Centre to help celebrate this milestone occasion. Young Roleystone Fire Cadets, pictured above L-R Aaron Newland, Michael Adams and Storme Green will set off on the adventure of a life time on April 4 when they sail up the West Australian coast line on board the Leeuwin II. Thanks to FESA and the Roleystone Volunteer Fire Brigade, the youngsters have been given the opportunity to sail on West Australia’s own tall ship, a three - masted barquentine with over 810 metres of sail and an overall length of 55 metres. During their 7 days on board the Leeuwin II, our cadets will become involved in every aspect of operating a traditional square rigger. Through setting sails, standing watch, climbing the mast, and taking the helm, they will work as a team to sail towards their destination. In addition to onboard training they will have the benefit of experiencing the West Australian coastline and the magnificent Indian ocean. If the weather allows it, the cadets will also visit onshore to further enrich their adventure. The voyage isn’t a holiday and the cadets will be involved in interactive workshops designed to develop leadership, teamwork and communication skills whilst living in a micro community. This includes living in a shared confined space with different personalities and cultures. The Valley Reporter wishes all three crew members the best of luck for the voyage and we look forward to hearing from Aaron, Michael and Storme when they return from their adventure.

BUSHFIRE aftermath issues Following the extreme bushfire event on 6 February, I have received many enquiries on a number of issues relating to fire prevention. For those concerned about making it easier to access applications for burn off permits, there is going to be a meeting of the Cities Bushfire Advisory Committee in a few weeks. Recommendations from this committee will then go forward to the Council for formal discussion and endorsement. Additional passes for the green waste site or additional green waste pick-ups was the topic of discussion at a recent Technical Services committee meeting bought forward by Cr. Wielinga. We both spoke on Roleystone community concerns and a number of issues were identified: 1. The tonnage of green waste picked up during the street collection was lower than what was expected from this community, indicating perhaps the locals are not using this opportunity fully.

2. Approximately 25% of tip passes were not being utilised by the Roleystone and Karragullen community. 3. All households throughout the City of Armadale pay the same Waste Management rates (apart from businesses). As there is a cost for additional street green waste pick-ups and additional tip passes, why should others have to subsidise Roleystone residents? Additional green waste passes are available for $17. 4. As residents who live in the new areas of North Forrestdale have to pay additional local area rates for their streets and parks to be kept at the high standard they require, then perhaps all properties in high fire prone areas should pay increased waste management rates to cover additional support for the removal of their green waste. An Officer’s report on this issue will come to our next Technical Services committee meeting. We will keep you informed.

SENIORS HOUSING UPDATE The community committee which was set up to navigate the way forward for the Seniors independent living housing to be constructed on the Primary School site feel reasonably confident that we are on the right track to seeing this become a reality. Elders (for Landcorp) called for expressions of interest (EOI) to gauge the level of commitment from parties in such a development. We have been advised that 7 EOI’s were received, which will add pressure on the Government to agree to allow use of the site for this purpose. The EOI will be analysed and, if received in a positive light, discussions will be held with the City of Armadale to determine its views on the proposed scheme amendment. A scheme amendment will then be initiated. This is where community will have the opportunity

to voice their opinion on the proposed scheme amendment. Once the re-zoning is in place, an evaluation of the site will be called for. An agent will be appointed to manage the marketing process possibly calling for tenderers. All prospective tenderers will be encouraged to discuss their proposed development ideas with the City as part of due diligence. This will be another opportunity for the community to make sure its voice is heard by the City, ensuring any development application is agreeable. A panel of 3 people (LandCorp, RDL and a solicitor) will review the tenderers and make a decision. If all goes as above, marketing will not commence for at least 15 months, due to a number of clearances required for the Crown Land. We will continue to keep you informed. Cr. Pat Hart.

ARMADALE LIQUOR STORE ROBBERY Armadale Detectives are seeking information in relation to a robbery on an Armadale liquor store where a staff member was assaulted when he confronted the thief. On Monday 7 March at about 5pm a young man entered the Liquor Barons liquor store on Jull St Armadale. He took a carton of Jim Beam from the cool room and ran from the store without paying. A member of staff followed the young man from the store and confronted him in the Armadale Shire carpark on Jull St. A second man then appeared and punched the staff member to the head whilst the other ran off with the stolen liquor. No injury was sustained. The two young men sought by police were last seen heading towards Albany Hwy and are described as: 1. Male, light skinned, approx. 18-20yrs, 183cm, wearing jeans and a striped orange/red shirt. 2. Male, light skinned, approx. 1820yrs, 160cm with short, light brown hair. Offences similar to this one are becoming commonplace and police are keen to convey the message that it is unacceptable and they will go to all lengths to apprehend offenders. TAXI DRIVER’S ASSAILANTS SOUGHT Armadale Detectives are investigating an incident where two men assaulted a taxi driver and stole his taxi. The taxi has since been

recovered however police are keen to identify the men who assaulted and threatened the driver. At about 1.10am on Thursday 10 March a taxi was dispatched to an address in Mornington St, Armadale. On arrival the driver saw two men standing outside. They entered the taxi and directed the driver to Petrel Cls, Armadale where they asked him to stop. The driver asked for the $20 fare and one of the men got out of the taxi and stated that the other man would pay. The man outside the taxi then punched the driver in the head through the open window while the man who had remained in the taxi (in the front passenger seat) started to kick the driver resulting in bruising to the face and a cut mouth. The driver got out of his taxi and approached the man who told him he had a machete and made threats towards him. The driver backed off and saw the man, who was still in the taxi, get into the driver’s seat. The second man got into the front passenger seat and they drove away. Detectives are seeking two men described as: 1. Dark skinned male, 18-20yrs, stocky build, short stature, light hair, facial hair, wearing a dark jacket and shorts. 2. Dark skinned male, 18-20yrs, medium build, medium height, short dark hair, facial hair, wearing a green hooded jumper.

oleystone Tee-Ball R and Baseball Club Inc. The bats, gloves, balls and tees have been put away after the conclusion of another successful season for Roleystone Teeball and Baseball Club. More than 100 tee-ballers and baseballers played their final games for 2010-11 this month, including the club’s fantastic u-12 Tee-ball State Championships team. The state titles were held in Perth over the recent long weekend and Roleystone – promoted to B grade this year – performed courageously against much larger clubs. Coached by Amanda McRae-Lea and Jodie Hansen, with assistance from Peter and Wendy Mays and family helpers, Roleystone won one game from five. Mrs Hansen said: “Amanda and I are very proud to have been able to coach such a wonderful bunch of children throughout the season and we enjoyed all the carnivals we attended.” Three Little League baseball players – Jordan Howell (1) and Jack Warrington (2) (Southern Hills Warriors) and Leighton McDonnell (3) (Combined All Stars) – also represented Roleystone with pride at the Little League State Championships metropolitan qualifying tournament at Willetton during the long weekend. These boys will continue training until they compete in the State Championships tournament at Easter. Roleystone’s Annual General Meeting was held in March, with the current committee stepping down and a new committee voted in. Vice President Mrs Hansen, who ably led the club this year in the absence of a president, praised all teams, coaches, committee members and sponsors for their contributions. “All of our teams have had a fantastic season, especially the under-9’s – I’m sure they are a States team of the future,” she said. “I would like to sincerely thank all of our sponsors – in particular Roleystone Real Estate and Sam Saffioti. Because of you, we are a successful club. “I would also like to thank the wonderful committee for all their help this season. As we haven’t had a president, everybody has pitched in and as the saying goes ‘many hands make light work’. “Finally I would like to wish the new committee all the best for the 2011-12 season.”

When it comes to selling your home there is only one choice. RACE REPORT: 5 & 6 March 2011 40th Westernationals 22 cars started on the day with Jeffrey Clarke ranked 3rd and John McSweeney ranked 10th overall. John raced 3 qualifiers with 4 rounds of racing, Jeffrey raced 2 qualifiers with 4 rounds of racing. Both ran successfully with no damage   motors  to their all weekend and with both cars setting new PB’s with every pass.    Only 440 litres of methanol fuel was consumed over the weekend. John had 5   out of 7 reaction times in the .07 or better and he had successfully beaten the fastest car of the whole meeting. John ran his first 5 second pass in Round 3 Eliminations and Jeffrey won against the number 1 qualifier. They faced each other in the Eliminations Final with John nailing Jeffrey at the start line, the winner of the day was Jeffrey winning by .8 hundredths of a second with both cars running their personal best. Jeffrey managed to reset the BB/D class and track records and it was the first for Perth Motorplex where a two car team has made it into the Finals in the same competition. John found out later that the boss, Jeffrey Clarke had changed his rev limitor from 10,100 rpm to 10,600 rpm allowing him to over rev to create more boost to come away and win his second national event. At the presentations John had made comment that he drove it out the back door, there is no team order - this is racing and he was beaten by a better car on the day with both men looking forward to meeting again in the finals. Since a bowling green was established in the mid 1970’s, the Roleystone Country Club Bowls Division has provided strong sporting competition, fun social activity and vibrant entertainment to its members and the wider community. Now, some thirty-five years on, the district is in real danger of losing this important recreational facility, due to a dwindling membership that won’t meet the ongoing costs associated with maintaining our greens. Roleystone boasts two magnificent greens, rated as good enough to host state bowling events, and a spectacular outlook as well. We also have a solid core of members who are welcoming, hard working and always ready to assist new bowlers. In order to continue beyond the current season, the club needs new members. There are many people in our community who have shown an interest in bowls while participating in the many fun events and competitions organised by the bowlers, including corporate/community bowls, soup days, gala days and a variety of invitational and competitive events. Now is the time to turn that interest into

something stronger by coming down to the club on a Friday evening or a Saturday afternoon to join in our open events. You can play barefoot or with flat soled shoes, and we will provide the bowls and coaching where needed. For the last six weeks Roleystone Tigers coach Adam Bloomer has been getting acquainted with players and the Club. While coaching is a new experience for Adam, he comes with a strong playing history. He started playing for the Kelmscott Bulldogs at a junior level through to senior competition. Two highlights of his career were representing WA in the Teal Cup and winning a premiership flag playing for Boulder in 1989. Adam was encouraged to take on the challenge by his stepsons Robbie and Lee Pearce, (both key players for the Tigers) and he has been seen training the squad hard since. Like all new coaches Adam has a premiership flag in his sights but believes that his key task is to get players to bond as a team. Past coach Denis Evans made appearances at training sessions to pass on a few coaching tips and no doubt past player antics. A scratch match has been scheduled for Saturday 19 March at Safety Bay.

“Damn”, I say to myself. I’ve forgotten to set my alarm the previous night, meaning I’ve slept in and now have little time to get to the college for my first English class of the morning. This is my second stint of teaching “Ingrish” to Vietnamese kids in Da Nang. They are generally young university students (18 - 25 year olds) or kids finishing high school. They are all eager to learn, and delightful to teach. They are fully aware that a good education is their ticket to a good occupation in the future, and since many of them want to study overseas, having good English speaking skills is a must. I jump out of bed, shower quickly, throw on some clothes, gather my stuff for the day, then jump aboard my bicycle for the short ride to the college. I’m in a mild panic as, with most Asian cultures, I don’t want to “lose face”. In each of the classrooms of the college, a set of rules is prominently displayed: 1. Be on time 2. No Vietnamese 3. No cell phones 4. Do not chat in class 5. If absent, please call the college Not wanting to break rule #1, I madly pedal my bike like Lance Armstrong in the Tour de France. Then again, he didn’t have to navigate through a bustling mob of kamikaze motorbike riders. I’m told the population of Saigon is roughly 7 million people with 5 million motorbikes - phew!!! I shudder to think that as the country’s growing middle class becomes more prosperous, those 5 million motorbikes may be replaced with 5 million cars. In the classrooms, I usually give a bit of leeway with rules #2 and #4. Sometimes a little Vietnamese can be useful, especially when a student has few English skills luckily I have a smattering of Tieng Viet (Vietnamese) which does come in handy now and then. As far as chatting is concerned, I permit the kids to chat as long as it’s in English and doesn’t disturb or interrupt the other students. I have added a 6th rule - which is “Have fun”. Initially the kids found this rule a little bit unfamiliar at the beginning, as their Vietnamese school teachers tend to be very strict and reserved. To have this Australian man joking, laughing and even singing songs was a bit strange to them, but they soon got into the habit of really enjoying their time in class. Phew, I finally arrive at the college in one

Entertainment, music, craft and interactive fun at three CBD sites will give the City of Armadale’s Minnawarra Festival on Sunday 20 March a vibrant new look. The region’s premier community festival, hosted by the City annually since 1992, will feature FREE activities at Minnawarra Park, Memorial Park and Jull Street Mall from 10am to 5pm. Dr Megan Paull will be presenting “Barriers to Newcomers.” Do you find that some new volunteers fade away too quickly? Are you having trouble finding new people to take on established roles in your organisation? Have you recently (or not so recently) heard people lamenting the lack of new people to do things in your organisation? “It’s always the same faces, and always the same hands.” “We need some new blood.” If so - this workshop is for you! You or your organisation may be inadvertently placing roadblocks in the way of new volunteers. These roadblocks can mean that volunteers who come along to a single session or meeting may not come back. Come along and find out about some recent work that has been done with newcomers. This work identifies what sort of

roadblocks newcomers encounter, why some may not ‘put their hand up’ for increased responsibility, and why some may decide not to continue volunteering in an organisation. On Wednesday 9 March, Women in Business welcomed Phoebe McIndoe, Telethon Child of 2010, her mother Susie and Channel 7 Telethon Marketing and Events Manager Chrissie Maus to celebrate International Women's’ Day (albeit a day late). Chrissie gave us an overview of the inner workings of Telethon, saying that there would be thirty-six beneficiaries of the $9.2m raised in 2010. Phoebe prepared her speech very well, speaking of the lead-up to the Telethon weekend and the excitement of meeting all the stars and newsreaders. She also spoke of her very important flight over Rottnest Island, and not getting to bed until 1.00am (at Mum’s insistence) on the Sunday morning of Telethon. Phoebe is a great ambassador for Telethon, and still has people stopping her in the street to talk and donate.

The City of Armadale has taken the lead to be the authority responsible for the co-ordination of the urban demolition and cleanup after the Roleystone/Kelmscott bushfires, which started on Sunday 6 February 2011. The Council has appointed the City of Armadale’s former engineer, Mr Ken Brown, due to his intimate knowledge of the built environment in the region where the fires took place. Ken will oversee the co-ordination of the urban demolition and cleanup. Armadale Mayor, Linton Reynolds said, “Early on, we looked to what happened in Victoria in the bushfires, and our discussions with the City of Whittlesea, revealed that it was important to have an overall co-ordinator. “We have managed to gain additional funding to cover the cost of demolition for those properties thought to have asbestos or CCA (treated pine) under the WANDRRA scheme, which is

jointly provided by the State and Federal governments. This is a great outcome for those whose properties were badly damaged or destroyed by the fires.” “The City is treating all dwellings constructed prior to January 1989 as potentially containing asbestos building products. We are taking a cautious approach.” “The Council has engaged an independent organisation to monitor the air in the region, to test for dust particles during demolition and to come in after the demolition is completed to check that the sites are all clear. “We will oversee a number of accredited and certified demolition companies to undertake the largescale cleanup. “The benefit is that we can manage and ensure the quality of the demolition work, in order to protect not only the individual fire victim but also the broader community”, he said.

People whose homes were destroyed or damaged in the February 6 bushfire are encouraged to apply for assistance from the Lord Mayor’s Distress Relief Fund (LMDRF). Application forms can be accessed on the City of Armadale website www.armadale.wa.gov.au, by calling the City on 9399 0197 or by visiting the Administration Centre, 7 Orchard Avenue, Armadale. LMDRF assistance is available to City of Armadale residents who suffered personal hardship due to the loss or damage to their residence, property, furniture or personal effects as a result of the bushfire. The assistance aims to help people repair their homes and restore normal living conditions as quickly as possible, said Armadale Mayor Linton Reynolds. “The LMDRF Perth Hills Fire Appeal was established once it became apparent that many families had suffered significant hardship as a result of the bushfire,” Cr Reynolds said. “Thanks to the generosity of individuals, businesses,

community organisations and the State Government, the funds raised can now start to be distributed. “The City of Armadale, which is coordinating bushfire recovery actions, is managing the application process for LMDRF assistance. “However, the final decision regarding the extent of assistance for each application rests with the board of the Lord Mayor’s Distress Relief Fund.” Assistance is not available for repairs to damaged cars, boats or caravans, or to business operations affected by the bushfire. This year another new committee of volunteers have come forward to help things run along more smoothly. One of our biggest tasks (which we’re looking forward to very much) is organising our Family Fun Day, to be held this year in November. As the name suggests, this is another wonderful day out for Playgroup members and their families, which we are hoping will also be a great success! Playgroup teams have spent the last couple of weeks working on creating their own individual banners to represent the members that attend on each day, which has been great fun and (luckily) not too messy either. My husband and I watched “The World According to Monsanto” DVD and were horrified. I have the book titled the “Truth According to Monsanto”, and the film seems to loosely follow the format of that book. (I confess I’d only read 1 or 2 chapters prior to seeing the DVD ). Monsanto, the great designer of experiments which provide evidence to their choosing is on our doorstep! It’s all about using chemicals to make profits, as well as the lies, and false promises of increased yields and money for farmers. I heard Steve Marsh’s story and my heart went out to him. I was also stunned (considering what we know about this company) that our own Government has now decided to allow farmers to grow GM canola in WA, and to add insult to injury, also sold out a 20% share in “Intergrain” (a crop breeding company which is part owned by government) to Monsanto for a paltry $10.5m! I’m sure most of the stakeholders (taxpayers) in Intergrain would not have been made aware of this. It was reported on the website of Gene Ethics that in February 2010, three European grain traders sent a letter to Premier Colin Barnett advising that they would not buy WA grain if GM canola was grown in WA. More money for farmers, I think not, I think we will lose the total wheat market in WA. Nothing short of madness on the part of the Barnett Government. It’s a sad reflection on our state when compared to other states such as South Australia - with Japan signalling their commitment to GM free produce, after signing contracts with the South Australian growers after the SA Govt extended its ban on GM canola up to 2014. Sometimes one has to wonder whether there is much hope left for us! It truly seems we are on a road to destruction. Forget about rising mortgage interest rates, housing prices, shares and stocks… because it is our actual food supply that is being corrupted. What is happening now will impact on all our future, and something needs to be done. ALEXANDRA MAKES LADIES W.A. STATE HEAT TEAM “Baseball-mad” is probably the best word to describe Alexandra Worth, who at the age of 14 has already managed to cram so much into her Baseball career. At the age of 9 Alex started her career playing Tee-Ball with the A.K. Strikers, before making the natural progression to Baseball with the Kelmscott Bulldogs for a season. Wanting to take advantage of a better Junior

Development Program, (as well as play at the top level in her age group) Alexandra moved to the State League Club Melville Braves, where she currently plays in their 15.1’s side, a team mostly made up of boys. Competing with boys has never phased Alexandra, who believes that working that little bit harder to be competitive is a welcome challenge. Alexandra also represents Melville in the clubs women’s team, and plays in the Angels all-girls team. Alex even manages to fit some baseball into her normal school day by attending the Darling Range Sports College’s Diamond Sports Program. Without a doubt, the highlight of this young woman’s career so far would have to be her recent selection in the ladies W.A. State Heat side. The side will

AARON SELECTED FOR PERTH HEAT COLTS TEAM 08/09 season, in which he won the team’s MVP Award. This season, Aaron’s eagerness to learn more about the game took him to Swan Districts, where he and Roleystone teammate Liam Turner have been playing in the club’s 17.1’s side. Aaron started the year off well at the elite level training with the State Under 16 Squad, until the squad had to be cut down from 22 to 18 weeks later. Despite being cut from the squad, Aaron really enjoyed his time

training with the top kids of his age group, and was acknowledged for his pitching and encouraged to keep trying. Aaron’s development received a big boost recently when he was selected for the Perth Heat Colts team, which will tour North East America in June/July. Aaron will be joined on the trip by another past Roleystone player Jake Anderson, who was also selected to make this trip of a lifetime. The squad will be away for a month, spending

time in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington and many places in between. As well as playing up to 16 games of Baseball, they will attend many Major League Baseball games at all

the big ball parks in that area, and visit places like Niagara Falls, the White House, the Baseball Hall of Fame and Time Square. All the best to Aaron as he embarks on what will be the trip not to be missed.

Although only 15 years of age, and still learning the game of Baseball, Aaron Newland (a.k.a Azza) has a wealth of natural ability that has served him well in his first three seasons of the game. Helping Children Cope with Natural Disasters

When a natural disaster, (such as the recent Kelmscott/Roleystone fires) strikes, people may be directly or indirectly affected. Experiencing a crisis affects one and all, including children, even if they do not fully understand what has happened or is happening. A better understanding of trauma and strategies for dealing with the effects of trauma can help adults understand how

they impact on children, and how to help them cope with crisis. An event is considered a trauma when it involves an experience which creates an abnormally intense and prolonged stress response. Natural disasters are considered an ‘acute’ or ‘single incident trauma’. The impact

they can have on children’s feelings, thoughts, behaviour and bodies can vary according to their age and stage of development, as shown in the table below. These reactions may be present at the time of the trauma or emerge some time later after following the event. Often, children may wait to see that their adults are okay before expressing their own feelings and thoughts.

• Encourage children to be proactive in addressing their own fears/ worries • Let children know you are okay and are taking care of yourself • Seeking professional help can also be useful in addressing the short term effects of trauma and preventing the development of long term problems.
