On Saturday 18 October, our German Shepherds went missing from our Roleystone property. With no leads or sighting, we hit social media and received the most amazing and unexpected results. We started with local Roleystone Facebook pages and expanded out from there. The results were incredible. Hundreds of people responded - we knew a few people, but most were strangers. They all offered their valuable advice, help and support. Groups walked the bushland for hours and people called to ask which areas to

tales from a Traveller I recently travelled to Vietnam to complete a journey of over 2000kms by road. Starting in Saigon, we travelled south-east to the coastal town of Phan Thiet and stayed the night at a comfortable small hotel with a pool for $7. We then headed further along the coastline to Dalat, my favorite city on the highlands. Our boutique hotel was set in a beautiful garden and the staff was exceptionally helpful... all for $35 per night with breakfast. After 2 nights, we headed south-east to Phan Rang, north to Nha Trang and north along the most beautiful coastline to Hoi An. We met with friends and rambled around this lovely old French town, with its 400-year-old Japanese wooden bridge. There were lots of places to shop and eat the most delicious Vietnamese food. We then cut west to mountainous country and saw the picturesque scenery of high mountains and low valleys, coffee and rubber plantations, tapioca and rice fields. The scenery was breathtaking. We made it to the Vietnam/Cambodian/Laos borders where guards would not let us leave, thinking we had just come from Laos with no visas or papers. Luckily, smooth talking from my driver got us out of that situation; spending time in a Laotian jail did not appeal to me at all. We then headed south through the highlands. Mountain tops were covered in clouds and the countryside was 40 shades of green. There were lots of rivers in these areas and hydropower was a major feature. We stayed nights in Kon Tum, Plieku. Westerners are not supposed to stay in these hotels, but we managed to find one that would take us. All in all, over 2400kms were travelled in 2 weeks, and I must say, it was a most informative, wonderful journey. Most of the areas were very intensive war zones in the Vietnam War, but the people, being so resilient, have come back and built new lives. If ever you want a holiday to remember, go to Vietnam. It has a history of wars, floods, landslides, and unbelievable poverty, but the people welcome visitors with open arms

SUCCESS

Earlier this year, the Kennelly Family was inspired to raise funds for Telethon 2014 by collecting loose change from people living in and around Roleystone. The family would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who kindly donated their silver coins to help support the medical and social welfare of children and young people, and to fund research into children’s disease. All those 5,10, 20 and 50c pieces added up to a remarkable total of $1073.20, and contributed to the record-breaking $25, 271, 542 grand total of money raised over the Telethon weekend in Western Australia this year. The Kennelly Family are considering holding the same fundraising initiative in 2015, so please keep collecting those coins and stay tuned for information about dropoff points. Cheers, The Kennelly Family.

Canning MHR Don Randall is inviting budding local photographers to submit images for his 2015 calendars. Each year two separate calendars are distributed to every household in Canning – one to the northern area and the other to the south of the electorate. The photos selected for each of the calendars will be seen by approximately 50,000 people. Mr Randall said the local government areas of the City of Armadale and Serpentine-Jarrahdale Shire make up the northern area; with the south encompassing the City of Mandurah, Shire of Murray, Shire of Boddington and Shire of Waroona. “Local residents are often the ones best placed to capture intriguing moments that reflect the unique diversity of the Canning electorate,” he added.

Metropolitan Local Government (MLG) Reform Metropolitan Local Government reform is progressing, but not necessarily smoothly. For the City of Armadale the northern part of Serpentine Jarrahdale will probably become the two lower wards of the City. For the Roleystone community this will mean the Jarrah ward (should wards be retained) will be larger again. In the last ward boundary adjustment the Jarrah ward went from RoleystoneKarragullen to Bedfordale north and this would now mean the inclusion of Bedfordale south and possibly Mount Richon as well. This would be advertised for public comment, but essentially with more people in the City the suggested wards will be bigger. The staff and services in the

different areas should still remain similar as the bulk of the Officers will still be required because the same work still has to be done. Fire Prone Mapping The State has required the City to check the fire prone maps it prepared for our area and the City has now submitted its results back to the State for confirmation. The City Rangers and Fire Brigades have worked together with the City Mapping Officers to prepare detailed maps showing fire-prone areas. These areas, once confirmed, will be required from May 2015 to have stricter planning requirements for new developments. For example, for an existing house on a half acre block – if no new structures are proposed, no new requirements would be imposed, if however an existing 1 acre property was to be subdivided, the new residences would be required to demonstrate with fire management plans and higher building standards that they could meet the fire safety standards as particularly required for that site (e.g. slope, vegetation). The requirements will be greater for places of residence than for example sheds. Disclaimer: The information provided herein is to the best understanding of Caroline Wielinga. BEE KEEPING WITH ZEEZ BEEZ I recently participated in a fun, half-day bee keeping course with local beekeeper Sharon of Zeez Beez. We met at Sharon’s property and got kitted out into suits and gloves before driving to some properties to inspect the hives. They were in various stages, with one or two needing an extra box or panels changed around. One hive was struggling as they had lost their Queen so a new one was placed inside for slow release from a cell. Another hive had an angry vibe as they were unhappy with their Queen, so she had to be replaced with anew Queen cell. It was fascinating to see the bees flying in with legs full of pollen and the amazing colours of yellow and orange. It was really

interesting to watch how they protect their Queen if it’s cold and all the different cells of grubs, brood, pollen, capped and uncapped honey. We had a fantastic time learning what was involved. We are purchasing a hive from Sharon and can’t wait to have it on our property. She is a wealth of knowledge and made us a yummy lunch as well. I highly recommend doing the course, even if you don’t want your own hive. You can also buy Sharon’s delicious honey and support a Roleystone producer! Spring is a beautiful time of the year to enjoy going for walks and pursuing more outdoor activities. Unfortunately it is also a very uncomfortable time of the year for many pets that experience constant itching and scratching as they try to relieve their very sensitive skin. These skin conditions can be frustratingly difficult to diagnose correctly but common triggers of inflamed and reddened skin include allergies, fleas, and other environmental allergen. In response to fleabites, dogs and cats generally show minor skin irritation. In some cases there will only be small amounts of itching even when there are many fleas on the animal. In contrast, a pet with a flea allergy will have a severe itch from the flea saliva. The pet’s response to intense itching is to chew, lick,

If you want to learn epic tricks from WA’s best skaters, then get down to the City of Gosnells’ Roll On Skate Series for clinics and competitions this summer and autumn. Held in partnership with Skateboarding WA, the clinics and professional skate, scooter and BMX competitions will run at City skate parks from November 2014 to July 2015. City of Gosnells Mayor Dave Griffiths said the Roll On Skate series was a great way for young people to do something fun during the summer and autumn months. “This program is for everyone – you can show your skills at one of the skate, BMX or scooter competitions or come along and learn at one of the clinics,” said Mayor Griffiths. “At the monthly competitions, the City’s Youth Services team will be hosting a free barbecue, giving competitors’ families and everyone in the community a chance to support local young people and have a fun day out.”

We received so many positive emails thanking us for putting the event together, and without your support (providing 100 extra lolly bags) we would have had quite a few disappointed ghouls (kids)! During this time she has been asked on many occasions to create a Meditation CD. Unfortunately, she didn’t know how to go about it and time passed. However, the CD came to fruition when Eugene was introduced to two talented local musicians, Raje Deva and Scott Mitchell, who offered to help her put a recording together. “It was an amazing process. Scott and Raje have since become very dear friends to me,” she said. Eugene learnt how to meditate in the 80s. It has always played a part in her life and she loves sharing the benefits of meditation with others. “Meditation is a wonderful practice for everyone and particularly

FIRE AWARENESS MEETINGS On 30 October, a Croyden Road residents’ fire awareness meeting was held at the Roleystone Fire Station. The meeting aimed to promote bushfire readiness awareness, encourage the linking of neighbours, and ensure communication in bushfire events and other emergency situations. Following a very informative meeting led by Bushfire Ready Officers Chris Cairns and Bob Littman, it was agreed that they, along with interested residents, would attend Terry Zappelli’s home to address issues regarding fire prevention around a house.

On the following Sunday, twenty Croyden Road residents attended a very informative session with Bob Littman, Chris Cairns and FESA officer Evan Collis. They were given information that would be critical to their survival in the event of a bushfire. Croyden Road residents wish to acknowledge their appreciation of the time Chris Cairns and Bob Littman - both voluntary Bushfire Ready Officers - have given to assist them in being bushfire ready. Pat Hart, Croyden Road Street Coordinator.

Share the spirit of Christmas with Carols in Memorial Park and enchanting Toy Parade

PAGE 15 – © Kiwi Enterprises (WA) P/L as the Trustee of the Newland Family Trust t/as The Valley Reporter

The City’s much loved annual Carols by Candlelight will be held in Memorial Park on Sunday 7 December, from 6.30 to 9pm. Mayor Henry Zelones encourages people to arrive early, as from 6.30pm there will be a visit from Santa Claus along with a Toy Parade through the Jull Street Mall. “Children will love watching the parade as it travels through the Mall to Memorial Park, and will have the opportunity to have a photo taken alongside their favourite Christmas character. “The event is very popular and a wonderful way to celebrate the spirit of Christmas, singing carols in the beautiful park, enjoying the twilight and music. “We are very fortunate to be supported by many musical groups and local schools and expect a crowd of over 5000 to attend again this year. “I would like to encourage everyone, especially our new residents, to come along to this warm, family friendly, free event to sing up a storm in the lead up to Christmas. “This time of year can be very busy for many of us, so take time out and indulge in the sausage sizzle that will be available for sale on the night,” said Mayor Zelones. This year’s Christmas Carol singing will be led by the Armadale Primary School, Dale Christian College and John Wollaston Anglican Community School, along with Soloist Katherine John, Classic Sounds Vocal Ensemble and the Roleystone Theatre Choir, accompanied by the Armadale City Concert Band.

Girls on the Porch had a lot of firsts in 2014. We had over 160 attendees for the first time, we our first male speaker (non-NBCF related), and it was the first time the original organiser of G on the Porch attended an event since 2008. All these firsts brought tears and laughter, and remin us of the important message behind all the fundraising that Girls on the Porch does for the Nati Breast Cancer Foundation. We again held our event at the Esplanade Hotel Fremantle by Rydges and were so pleased with high standard of service we received from Anthony Brandis and his team. We cannot recomm them highly enough - nothing was a problem. Each year we are blown away and humbled by the generous amount of goods donated by compan businesses and individuals who continue to support Girls on the Porch. Saying thank you does seem enough, but we can assure you it is heartfelt. Without your generosity we would not be ab offer such great raffle prizes that are very well spoken about. After hearing amazing things from last year’s event, Lana Do Canto, Fundraising Relation Executive at National Breast Cancer Foundation, made the trip across this year. We are so plea she did as it gave us the chance to showcase what Girls on the Porch does for National Breast Cancer Foundation. She was very excited and impressed by amazing support and how we fundraise in WA. Lana brought us up to date w the National Breast Cancer Foundation news and again spoke about their h of no deaths from breast cancer by 2030. Every dollar we raise helps make a reality. Emilie Jones, the original organiser of Girls on the Porch, was put on the sp day before the event when we asked her to say a few words to everyone about Girls on the Porch starte was her first event since leav Perth to go travelling in 2 and from her reaction, she blown away by how Girls the Porch has blossomed what it is today. We just h even in the smallest of w that we have done her pr Thank you Emilie for hav that “mad” idea - just loo what you started!

GARDEN GURUS AT RCC It has been three years since we were the lucky recipients of our Sustainable Garden from Guru Productions (Greenfingers Show) and the Water Corporation. The garden and elective subjects around it has continued to grow and Trevor Cochrane was back on Wednesday 29 October to film our progress. Skye Lanoiselet, Katie Little and Ashlee Hardisty were the stars during the filming and even Mr Thatcher and Mrs Greyling got a word in. Mr Cochrane was very impressed with the garden’s continued growth and congratulated the College for its efforts. Thank you again to all the Family Volunteers who help to make our Garden a success as well as all the teachers, especially Mr Huisman and Mrs Littlewood who help maintain it and who present the Year 7 Horticulture elective. Our Year 8 Horticulture group also maintains the garden on a weekly basis and their hard work can be seen all over the College. The show aired on Saturday 15 November on Channel 9 at 5.30pm. REMEMBRANCE DAY 2014 Roleystone Community College wishes to warmly thank Mr and Mrs Gwynne and Family for their continued generosity in donating the beautiful roses for our Remembrance Day wreaths. Mr and Mrs Gwynne extend this kindness to Roleystone Community College every year, and we would like to acknowledge their thoughtfulness and goodwill. We would also like to thank Mrs West and Mrs Goad for making the lovely wreaths. Some were used with the display of poppies around our flagpole at the College for Remembrance Day, while others were taken to the service at Araluen Botanical Park. Z umba

The reopening of The Shack in Gosnells was celebrated with a community event on Saturday 1 November with free amusements, pizza, ice cream, and a skate competition. After its temporary redevelopment closure, The Shack now provides young people within the City of Gosnells a funky, urban-themed place to hang out at. Located adjacent to the Jean Garvey Skate Park on Ashburton Drive, Gosnells, The Shack’s makeover includes a whole new fit out of the interior, with new lighting, flooring, couches, bean bags, café style tables and chairs and an array of new amusements such as PlayStation 4 and Xbox 360. There is also a new urban art mural outside The Shack, which features a wetland theme painted by respected urban artists and local young people. City of Gosnells Mayor Dave Griffiths said the City’s Youth Services team consulted local young people to find out what they would like to see at The Shack, and most of the revamp was based on their feedback. “The outcome of the

refurbishment is that The Shack now has a new feel and atmosphere and provides a more comfortable, friendly and welcoming environment,” said Mayor Griffiths. “The Youth Services team has used modern lamps, ceiling pendants, floor rugs and couches to create a more trendy and up-to-date youth friendly space and I think the result is great.” Sporty and art-inspired youth have not been forgotten with new sports equipment and a range of new art supplies added at The Shack. To coincide with the launch of the new and improved youth space, the City of Gosnells will also be introducing new art and sports programs at The Shack. For more information on The Shack, please contact Youth Services on 9397 3131. Ref:www.gosnells.wa.gov.au. Published Tuesday 21 October, 2014.

Local Ladies Create Beautiful Boobies

It was a month of boob-tiful breasts as Roleystone locals Emily Primrose and Clare Kenward (Health Promotion Officers at Women’s Health and Wellbeing Services) ran a number of exciting events and workshops during Pink October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. During the workshops, local women created amazing works of art through the fun process of breast casting. Women’s Health and Wellbeing Services, located in Gosnells, celebrated breasts of all shapes and sizes, and honoured the journeys of local ladies’ personal breast cancer experiences. “One in eight women is at risk of developing breast cancer and many women incorrectly think that self breast examination is enough. It’s not. A screening mammogram may detect a cancer that is too small to feel” said Health Promotion Officer Emily Primrose. “WHWS is proud to support local women and families who are affected by breast cancer.

As summer approaches and temperatures start to rise, your dog’s grooming routine becomes even more important. Washing and grooming is not always about making your dog look like a show dog. Rather, it is necessary to keep an eye on your dog’s skin, ears, and nails, as well as ensuring they remain cool during the hot months. A good brush-out for thicker coated dogs is very important in summer as it loosens hair to allow air to circulate against the skin. Regular brushing and grooming will prevent matting, which will reduce the need to clip the dog’s hair to extremely

short lengths. In saying that, some dogs benefit from a short summer clip and we do plenty this time of year (ask about the fluffy ears and tail summer special)! This is also the time of year to be wary of ticks and fleas. They are both more prominent during summer and need to be managed with the appropriate flea treatment and regular bathing. It pays to look after your dog with Blue Wheelers Mobile Dog Wash and Grooming service. After a wash and a groom, we guarantee your dog will feel good, smell great, and leave a few less tumbleweeds rolling across the lounge room floor! For more information and to book an appointment, please email perthhills@bluewheelers.com.au, visit www.bluewheelers.com.au or call Alexi Christidis on 0404 485 137.

The Heartactually Art Competition promotes the work of local artists and fundraises for the Heart Foundation. I was inspired to enter the Heartactually Art Competition by my niece, Bella Rose, who was born in May 2010. Three days after her birth, Bella was admitted to hospital in cardiac arrest. She was stabilised and transferred to the Mater Hospital Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and diagnosed with an interrupted aortic arch, VSD and ASD. Bella’s parents were told that she could be back home in 3 weeks. Unfortunately, she experienced many complications and was diagnosed with Velo Cardio Facial Syndrome (VCFS), the second most common syndrome after Down Syndrome. Bella spent the first 10½ months of her life in PICU, where she underwent 2 openheart surgeries, 3 episodes of necrotising endocolitis, a pneumothorax, numerous episodes of collapsed lungs, fundoplaction surgery, a transverse colon stricture removal, and diaphragmatic plication. She also had a gastrostomy and jajunostomy to enable her to be peg fed, and was ventilated for the majority of her time in PICU. At 9 months, Bella had gut surgery and began to thrive. She put on weight and managed on oxygen during the day and her CPAP (mask ventilation) machine during the night. Over the next few years Bella was able to come off her oxygen and CPAP machine completely, however, she is sustained predominantly by her peg feeding. Bella is an amazing little fighter who continues to defy the odds. Her journey is inspirational and the love and support provided particularly by her parents and extended family is a large part of the reason Bella has achieved what she has. Bella is now 4½ years old and attends a mainstream kindergarten. Her life is a triumph over significant challenges that she meets with rare determination. Her parents continue to display incredible strength, endurance and determination to ensure their precious little girl has the

best opportunities to lead a normal life. Bella’s ongoing journey will include many challenges that will be met with the same determination. Bella is our little miracle and our inspiration. To become a finalist for the Heartactually Art Competition, I have to canvas pledges for the Heart Foundation. The six highest fundraisers will be invited to attend the final at a Gala Event on Valentine’s Day 2015 at the QV.1 Plaza in Perth where the guests will choose the winner. You can help my entry by pledging a donation. Please visit www.pozible.com/ project/187956 for more information and put your heart in art and pledge to the Heart Foundation. A donation of $2 and over is tax deductible. I will also be holding an Open Studio on November 29, 10am - 4pm, at 146 Heritage Drive, Roleystone. Everyone is welcome. Thank you for your consideration and support. Stephanie Boyle email: cboyle29@bigpond.com Here is a picture of my entry “Lauren”.

On Tuesday 28 October, neighbours of a Roleystone house ravaged by fire on Heather Road attempted to extinguish the growing flames with a hose. As the fire edged closer to their property and with no sign of fire crews, Gus Royer and his father took it upon themselves to find a hose and started dousing the flames coming from their neighbour’s vacant two-story property. “I was running around grabbing the hose to try and spray it down... it was just dad and I at the time, it just looked real scary,” he said. The cause of the fire is believed to

be suspicious and is currently being investigated by the Police Arson Squad. When fire crews arrived, they spent more than 40 minutes trying to bring the fire under control. As worried neighbours filled the streets, Mr Royer said he feared the fire would spread to adjoining trees. If the pair of quick-thinking neighbours hadn’t intervened with a household hose, their home could have been destroyed. “Another minute or two and everything would have been gone,” he said. oleystone Tee-Ball R and Baseball Club Inc. With only 5 games played, it’s good to see how far everyone has developed with their skills. Credit goes to the coaches who have been doing marvellous work with their players to achieve these results. Keep up the good work! Our Supersquad players, Flynn Johnson and Rorke Miles, were recently presented with their uniforms at the Woodmans Point Training Camp. Unfortunately, Cameron Kraima had to withdraw from the squad due to illness but we’re 100% sure he’ll be back next year and we wish him a speedy recovery. His replacement in the squad is Cassie Dempsey - congratulations. The team played a demonstration game at Baseball Park on the opening night of the Perth Heat season, and they all displayed what high quality players they are. State Championship try-outs were held on 26 October. The skill level of all players was outstanding and made it very difficult for selectors. Two teams will represent Roleystone over the long weekend in February/March 2015: the Under 10’s team with coaches Paul Verity/Michelle London and the Under 12’s team with coaches Sandy Johnson/Lee Miles. Congratulations to all selected. We wish you every success for the upcoming carnivals and championships. Our little league players are also doing extremely well, with the first round of 6 exhibition games completed. These games aimed to familiarise the players, coaches and scorers with the little league baseball game format and expectations. With official league games

Major SponSor

now commencing Coach Lee says the team, made up of players with only tee-ball experience, is well prepared. Some players have shown that they are capable of adapting to this format, which includes pitching, catching and batting a pitched ball. A number of our players attended the LL Southern Hill charter trials for the Charter and Development Teams, held on Saturday 8 and Thursday 13 November. Our Charter is made up of Roleystone, Armadale, Kenwick and Kalamunda, and the players represented our club with pride. We would like to congratulate those parents and players who have recently attended umpiring clinics and attained their green shirts. Finally, here are some dates to mark on your calendar: Team Photos – 24th & 27th November, Lightning Carnival – 7th December, Last game - 13th December 2014. Keep up the good work everyone and catch you on the diamond! Wendy Mays, Publicity Officer.

In 5 weeks time, Event Manager Cat Brown and her BrownBros Events team made up of Pettania Hohaia, Mary Tu, Esther Tamaalii, and Lila Vagana will present Kiwi Xmas in the Park 2014 at Stirk Park, Kalamunda on Saturday 20th December from 11am – 6pm to the Perth Community. Last year’s event was very successful, and the team of coordinators are preparing for an even bigger turnout as a result of the growth of the Kiwis in Perth – Community & Events Facebook group. Just after last year’s Christmas get together the group membership was at 1500, and since then it has reached over 12,000 and continues to grow on a daily basis. The inaugural Kiwi Xmas in the Park came to fruition in November 2013 after the very first Kiwis in Perth Get Together in July 2013. Jay Morgan, a member of the Kiwis in Aussie Facebook group, suggested the idea and created the event during a conversation that took place in the group. Initially it was planned as a small BBQ get together of about 50 people, but ended up snowballing to over 500 guests accepting the event invite created by Mike Iafeta, admin of Kiwi in Aussie Facebook group. Kiwi Xmas in the Park has become an annual community event that has numerous elements to it shaped by Kiwis in the Perth Community. It showcases Kiwi culture through various forms of art expression, such as performance, craft, and food

Kiwi Xmas in the Park 2014 to name a few. These events are special to Kiwis at this time of year. Most of us made the move from New Zealand for better opportunities to chase our dreams and made sacrifices to leave loved ones back home. The event gives us a chance to come together as one big family to celebrate the birth of Christ in good old Kiwi fashion. “There are downsides to making the sacrifice to move to Australia to chase the dream. One of the things we want to shed some light on is the fact that there are homeless Kiwis (New Zealand Citizens) as a direct result of Kiwis not having the same benefit rights as Australians do when they move to New Zealand. If Kiwis can’t find work or are unable to work due to injury, they sometimes end up homeless or end up living in their cars if they don’t have family or friends to fall back on or help support them,” said Cat Brown. There is an active community group, led by Freedom Patene, “WE are ONE” that meet frequently to deliver care packages to homeless in the Perth Community around Perth City and Fremantle. Kiwi Xmas in the Park provides an opportunity for the community to give towards these care packages for Christmas by bringing an item to place under our Wishing tree at the Event. The event relies heavily on sponsorship and we are fortunate enough to receive kind sponsorship from the local Perth business community. In particular, we have received continued support from Chris Ellison from the New

Roleystone Community Chemist HEALTH ADVICE CORNER – Asthma

Time is going by so fast, Christmas is racing up on us, and I feel breathless… Could it be asthma? Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways resulting in recurrent episodes of wheezing, chest tightness, breathlessness, and coughing often at night or early morning. The airways resistance is due to contraction of muscles around the airways and swelling of the mucus membrane inside the airways. Poorly controlled asthma can affect lifestyle and daily activities dramatically. 1 in 6 children and 1 in 9 adults in Australia have asthma (2006). There is a strong link between asthma and allergic reactions and many asthmatics have co-existing conditions of hay fever or eczema. Although the risk of dying from asthma is greater in the elderly, people die from asthma at all ages. In 2006, 311 people died of asthma in Australia. Potential asthma triggers include allergy, viral infections, lung infections, Gastro oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), irritants such as tobacco smoke, air pollutants and occupational dusts, gases and chemicals, certain drugs (aspirin and anti-inflammatory medicines), cold air and exercise. Unfortunately, 40% of children with asthma are still exposed to passive cigarette smoke. Proper diagnosis of

asthma needs to be made by a doctor with full spirometric testing. Other conditions such as Cystic fibrosis, an inhaled foreign body or aspirated milk, chest infections and certain heart conditions can result in wheezing in children. It is vital the condition be properly diagnosed. Good asthma control includes achieving minimal symptoms during day and night, minimal need for reliever medication, no exacerbations (asthma attacks), no limitation of physical activity, and at least 80% of normal lung function. This can be achieved using inhaled medicines classified as relievers, preventers and symptom controllers. Relievers are the rapid acting bronchodilators, which as the name suggests open the airways rapidly, relieving the acute symptoms of asthma, shortness of breath, chest tightness and wheezing. These medicines work more effectively via spacers and can be used in nebulised form. Preventer medications are the inhaled anti-inflammatory medicine that treats the swelling within the lungs. The medicines treat the process of this disease and should be used regularly (each day) for those with mildmoderate or severe asthma. These medicines improve lung function, wellbeing, and prevent acute asthma attacks. When inhaled into the mouth, rinsing after use prevents sore throats and fungal infections such as thrush. Symptom controllers include the combination of long acting airway openers with preventer medications. These medicines help to control nighttime symptoms and achieve best lung function. Allergy control, giving up smoking (imperative), diet and controlled exercise are also important aspects of treatment. Asthma is a significant life threatening condition. Take it seriously. Visit the doctor to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment, and ask your pharmacist to ensure proper use of the right medicines.

Written by Richard George and directed by Lys Tickner at Roleystone Theatre, this adaptation of Roald Dahl’s iconic book is faithful to the original and suitable for children of all ages. Join Charlie Bucket and the other Golden Ticket winners on an amazing journey of discovery and disaster through Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. You will even get to meet the Oompa Loompas! A wonderful cast showcases the talented youth of Perth. This new generation of talented actors includes Seamus Harrison as Charlie Bucket, Stephanie Shaw as Veruca Salt, Elise Maidment as Violet Beauregarde, Leo Rimmer as Mike Teavee, Patrick Butler as Augustus Gloop and Bradley Towton as Willy Wonka. From further afield, two new additions to the cast are Oliver Kaiser as the Narrator and Natalie Cox as Mrs. Beauregarde. Local Roleystone resident Bradley Towton has been involved with most of the shows at Roleystone Theatre over the last two years. From a Bad Idea Bear in Avenue Q to a golden-maned Captain Hook in last year’s Peter Pan, Brad has been stretching his character pool. “When I first joined Roleystone Theatre, I didn’t expect to be having much of a role in the running of the whole shebang,” he said. “After my first show, Much Ado About Nothing, I was asked to step up as the new Treasurer, and so for the last few years I have been heavily involved in both the financial and theatrical sides of community theatre”. When asked about his role of Willy Wonka, Brad replied, “I absolutely love playing the eccentrics, the madmen and the morally bereft characters. They just always seemed to be the most entertaining, with a huge amount of room to stretch theatrically.” Brad has done productions for both Roleystone

As Christmas fast approaches, Kelmscott resident Alison Arrowsmith is getting ready for a madcap dash through the silly season. From the North Pole through to Bethlehem and back, Elfin Productions is delivering neverbefore-told tales of Christmas at the Latvian Centre Theatre. Written and directed by John Grimshaw, This is Christmas features various iconic figures such as Jesus, Santa Claus, Rudolph, Prancer and three questionably wise men. Arrowsmith plays four characters in the show – Brianna, Phoebe, Chelsea and Haggith. “Brianna is a little girl who meets Santa while Phoebe is a peasant and Chelsea is a choir singer,” she said. “Haggith is a man with severe OCD who tries to get into the Christmas spirit for unconventional reasons and faces a rather large challenge doing so. “Playing four different roles convincingly in the same production is the main challenge ahead of me.” Loving acting from a young age, Arrowsmith’s first major stage production was in August in ARENAarts’ production of Mutts, followed by the Aussie pub rock musical Merry Go Round.

She has previously appeared in several short films and studies acting in a bid to make it her career. “This is Christmas appealed to me because I liked the idea of doing something different at this time of year,” Arrowsmith said. Writer John Grimshaw describes the show as the festive season as you’ve probably never seen before – or will – again. “The show also has an odd assortment of Christmas figurines including Haggith who, some years ago, traded a Glasgow bedsit for a new life in downtown Bethlehem,” he said. Grimshaw was inspired to write another Yuletide-themed show after his previous success and enjoyment with The Karaoke Twist Christmas Special. “The intention with This is Christmas is to make it a ‘fun-forall’ for all cast and crew, as well the audiences,” he said. This is Christmas plays at 8pm December 11, 12, 13, 18, 19 and 20 and 5pm December 14 and 21. Tickets are $20 – book at www. trybooking.com/FUUJ. Party bookings available online. Please note: the show is rated PG and contains adult themes. The Latvian Centre Theatre is at 60 Cleaver Terrace, Belmont.

Artists of the Roleystone Family Centre will be having their Annual Art Exhibition over the weekend of Saturday 6 December and Sunday 7 December from 10.00am until 5.00pm. This is a great opportunity to see the fabulous work of many talented local artists who participate in classes run by the Centre. Most of the artwork is for sale, and you might even find a lovely Christmas present! See you there at the Roleystone Family Centre, Wygonda Road. Wendy van der Laan.

testimonial Dear Maggie, Patrick, Jo & Linda What a wonderful, stress-free experience we had selling our house with your team. WOW! Under offer before the sign went up, and no official “home-open’’. That in itself was a huge bonus. We did not have to worry about getting the house organised week after week. At all times you were very professional and kept us informed every step of the way, something we have not experienced when selling other property. You gave us immediate feedback on what the prospective buyers were thinking AND you achieved more than the asking price. Thank you so much. We were very pleased with the board outside the house, the photos were impressive, a credit to you and the photographer. Of course this was also due to you all advising us on how the house should be presented. Nothing was too much trouble and your enthusiasm was much appreciated. Thank you all for your ideas. You presented us with a list of recommended local Settlement Agents and were impressed with our chosen agent. Settlement was a breeze! When we have told people how quickly our house sold, and the lengths to which you went in order to achieve this, we have passed on the name of Maggie Burke Real Estate. Hopefully this will generate even more interest in your business.
