Editorial

YOUR Region. YOUR Magazine. YOUR Valley Reporter. This month’s “Letter to the Editor” contains a rather interesting philosophy. If we all lived by these simple set of principles we could make the world a better place. Why not partake in the Bickley Valley Artisan Experience? Speak with wine and cider makers, graze on delicious morsels, and taste the delectable wines and ciders produced on the premises by three cutting edge producers. Sound like something you’d enjoy? Then go to page 5 for all the booking details. Check out the many activities and challenges the Roleystone Girl Guides have been up to in third term. If you have a daughter aged eight to twelve who would like to join, turn to page 13 for contact details. Read how one local girl is part of a growing number of young female drivers who are challenging the traditional racing gender stereotype in Australia. In a typically male dominated sport, girls can enjoy driving fast cars too in a safe and

supervised environment. See pages 14 and 15. Two local sports have slogged it out all season to reach the finals with some wins and some losses along the way. Make sure you see our double page spreads, which capture their experiences in an array of trophy winner photographs. Australia’s top selling breakfast cereal, Weet-Bix, is now available in a gluten free option, with the launch of Gluten Free Weet-Bix. Made with sorghum grains, which are naturally gluten free, it has a 96% wholegrain content containing three times the antioxidants of oats. It’s great to see ongoing innovation from manufacturers to offer consumers a variety of choices. Read the full story on page 19. A story concerning the new bridge load limit signs placed before the Crodyen Road Bridge in Roleystone was published in issue #121 of The Valley Reporter. A follow-on story in this issue shows how this change affects local contractors. If

you are a local contractor who is affected, we’d like to hear from you. Go to page 25. Our local Roleystone Musicians Club has taken on board a great initiative. They are hosting a Halloween Party on Friday 31 October held at the Roleystone Senior Football Club verandah. There will be two sessions for two different age groups, which include face painting, live music, lots of prizes and a sausage sizzle fundraiser for the Roleystone Scouts all conducted in a safe, clean and central location. Please show your support and check out the times on page 26. Around this time of the year, FESA are busy conducting prescribed burns. With correct weather conditions, planning, and advice, private landowners can conduct prescribed burns on their land subject to local government requirements. Turn to page 27 for further details. Illegal dumpers will be caught

The Keep Australia Beautiful Council recently awarded City of Gosnells staff member, George Naylor, with a certificate of acknowledgement for his efforts in relation to a case of illegal dumping. Two offenders were found guilty on two counts of illegal dumping in the Canning Mills and Hacketts Gully areas and were fined $3,000. The message is clear, illegal dumping will not be tolerated and offenders will be prosecuted. City of Gosnells Mayor Dave Griffiths said the award signified the commitment of staff to the City’s Beautification Strategy which focused on improving

the visual amenity of areas and diminishing graffiti, illegal dumping and untidy verges and front yards. “Staff at the City are dedicated to the Beautification Strategy but we cannot do it alone so it is also important we have community members who can assist us in keeping the City of Gosnells looking great,” said the Mayor. The City takes littering and illegal dumping seriously and if you do witness this type of behaviour please contact Ranger Services on 9397 3000. Ref: www.gosnells.wa.gov.au. I recently travelled to Albany to visit my sons and I would like to share an inspirational experience with you. Early on the morning of Saturday 27 September I went to Bunnings and tried to purchase two potted flowers priced at $2.00 each. However, upon reaching the register, the lady informed me that one was $2.00 and the other was $6.99. I decided not to buy the expensive one whereupon the gentleman next in line said he wished to buy it for me as he tried to do “one kind act for someone every day.” I said thank you and that it wasn’t necessary, but he insisted. This gentleman’s philosophy on life is worth sharing and I thought it would be great to spread it throughout Australia and the world. The immensity of this simple set of principles is breathtaking. The plant is now blooming beautifully in Roleystone. Thank you kind gentleman. Thank you Albany. Mary Cook, Roleystone.

Nationally renowned artist Helen Norton returns to the Zig Zag Gallery for her Limited Edition Print Show opening on Saturday 18 October at 6:30pm. Helen’s second exhibition at the Gallery will feature a collection of new and exciting prints as well as other favourites. Inspired by the narrative of the human condition, throughout her career Helen has given viewers a smorgasbord of fantasy, allegory and humour. Her latest works reflect an exciting new stage in her journey and one that will intrigue and delight her enthusiastic collectors. CEO Rhonda Hardy said, “It is a delight to have Helen Norton return to the Zig Zag Gallery to exhibit prints of her latest works.”

“Helen has featured in over 50 solo exhibitions across the world and won over 25 awards and it is inspiring to see her evolving journey and imagination expressed in her latest prints.” Helen spent many of her early years living in desert locations around Australia, driven by a tireless thirst for discovery and adventure. She says becoming an artist was not a plan, more so a happy evolution of that thirst. The Limited Edition Print Show will continue until Sunday 2 November. The Zig Zag Gallery is located at 50 Railway Road, Kalamunda. For further information phone 9257 9998 or emailzzcc@kalamunda.wa.gov.au. Ref: www.kalamunda.wa.gov.au. Published on 24 September 2014.

oleystone Tee-Ball R and Baseball Club Inc. The Club would like to thank all the brave parents and kids who recently attended various coaching, umpiring and baseball scoring clinics during the rain on Sunday 5 October. Recently, 12 enthusiastic Roleystone players attended the Perth Heat Tee-ball and Baseball camp held during the school holidays. With 16 hours of training in 4 days, they learnt a great deal and are now prepared for the coming season. We also had a number of Roleystone players try out for the TBAWA 2014/15 Tee-ball Supersquad this year. Congratulations go to Flynn Johnson, Cameron Kraima and Rorke Miles for being selected. To those that didn’t make it we are all very proud of your efforts. You all did a fantastic job at the tryouts and were unlucky not to have been chosen. The Little League team kicked off their season on Wednesday 8 October at Maida Vale Reserve with three exhibition games giving everyone a taste of what’s to come. We wish Coach Lee and his team of players and parents all the best for their new venture. The Club would like to thank Roleystone Animal Hospital and Roleystone Chiropractic who have come on board this year as new sponsors for the 2014/15 season. Thanks must also go to our ongoing sponsors. We hope that you can support these businesses wherever possible: Seadragonz Swim School, Roleystone Supa IGA, Roleystone-Karragullen Community Bendigo Bank, Karragullen Gravel & Garden Supplies, Creative Driveways & Fencing, Tony Simpson, Don Randall, WJ & KS Automotives, Hogs Breath Cafe Kelmscott, Roleystone Pharmacy and our major sponsor Roleystone Real Estate. We would like to welcome our new coaches for this year: Rob Afanasiew, John and Emily Alford, Sean Kenworthy, Jonathon Ioppolo and Chris Holder. Also, welcome back to Emma Vincent, Kelly Hobbs, John Bately, Michelle London, Paul Verity, Karen Saciuk, Lee Miles and Sandy Johnson. Without these people stepping up to coach our kids, we would not get to play this wonderful game. Please assist them as much as possible to lighten their workload. Thanks again to John

UNIQUELY SPECIAL REMEMBRANCE DAY SERVICE at Araluen Botanic Park 1.30pm Tuesday 11 November Araluen Botanic Park is both honoured and privileged to again host its traditional uniquely special Remembrance Day Service in conjunction with the Commonwealth Department of Veterans’ Affairs on Tuesday 11 November at 1.30pm. The service will be conducted in the breathtakingly beautiful “Grove of the Unforgotten” memorial within the spectacular and ambient gardens of Araluen Botanic Park, Roleystone. To encourage community involvement, normal Park entry fees are waived and a complimentary afternoon tea will be served following the service. This year’s service will feature a guest solo performance, who will be supported by the regular participation of the Roleystone Community College choir.

A feature of the service is the wreath-laying ceremony, which provides for wreaths to be floated in the serene “Pool of Reflection” at the base of the Grove. “We are delighted to again host this important service at Araluen Botanic Park, which brings the community together in a most appropriate way to honour the memory of those who gave their lives for our freedom,” says Araluen Botanic Park Foundation, General Manager, Rod Ross. “The Grove of the Unforgotten site is in itself a war memorial dedicated to the 88 Young Australian League soldiers who lost their lives in the Great War. So we consider it most fitting to conduct this service in this very significant location within the Park.” Araluen Botanic Park is proudly supported by the Department of Parks and Wildlife.

Spring has sprung in Perth with ducklings starting to emerge from their nests in search of the nearest wetland, prompting a reminder from the Department of Parks and Wildlife for people to exercise caution on roads near water bodies. Wildlife officer Emma Lipianin said ducks often nested in tree hollows a considerable distance away from the water and once their young hatched, mothers had a long journey ahead of them to bring their ducklings to the nearest wetland. “This often results in the ducklings attempting to cross roads and cycle paths as they try to get to their destination,” she said. “Ducks on the move have been known to bring major highways and even the Mitchell Freeway to a halt, so we ask motorists and cyclists to try and avoid them without endangering themselves or other road users,” she said. “While the sight of fluffy ducklings waddling along after their mother is one of nature’s great displays, it can also be a major hazard. “It is best that they are not disturbed while in such a vulnerable state, so we encourage people not to approach them, feed them or interfere with them in any way.” To report sick or injured wildlife, call the department’s Wildcare Helpline on 9474 9055. The nutritional requirements for pets change significantly with age, and there is often a very detailed list of what to feed them to ensure important needs are met. Yet is common for owners to continue feeding their pets the same diet. As pets approach the last third of their expected life, bodily changes start to occur, including arthritis, incontinence, blindness, deafness and reduction in muscle strength to name a few. Animals generally become less active and decreased exercise means they can become overweight if their daily food intake is not modified. This can lead to obesity, which reduces the animal’s quality of life and mobility due to pain and dysfunction. It is important to have a well balanced diet with good levels of protein and fat. Additional fibre is helpful as many older animals become constipated as the bowel function reduces. For other animals, the problem can be reduced appetite or difficulty in chewing. It is important to monitor any adjustments to properly address the wellbeing of your pets, and a veterinary examination may be necessary to consider reasons for inappetence or weight loss. There are many beneficial regimes for feeding older animals,

and individual variations are important to cater for specific problems. Nutritional supplements are critical to ensure that the body can function and quality of life is maintained for geriatric animals as well as young pups and kittens. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs can be very helpful as an alternative therapy for ageing pet problems. Please call or text Dr Judith Congrene on 0433 2137 28 to book a home consultation and examination of your ageing pet. Photographs courtesy of JG Photographics.

The Roleystone Girl Guides have had an amazing third term with many fantastic activities and challenges. Their primary focus this term was completing their “life skills” badge. This saw the Girl Guides leaving the hall and visiting some of the fantastic sporting facilities available to the youth here in beautiful Roleystone, as well as in Byford. Our first visit was to our amazing Roleystone Gymnastics Club, where the gorgeous Nicole Smith generously took our girls through a Gym Fun session, in which they got to walk on the beams, work through a circuit and some floor routines, and jump on the trampolines. This was not an easy feat, as there were almost 20 Guides attending! Well done and thank you to Nicole for the donation of her time. Her passion for fitness and exercise is great to see. LOCAL GIRL REACHES SENIOR DRAG RACING LEVEL

Local Roleystone resident Georgia McSweeney is preparing to change gears as she progresses from Junior Dragsters to the senior drag racing level. Aged 17, Georgia has been involved in motor vehicle racing her entire life. However it wasn’t until her father shipped a junior dragster all the way www.seasonmakers.com.au from the United States to Perth in 2011 Call your local representative; Nigel Bray - that Georgia decided to put her foot down take the sport seriously. As her 18th birthday approaches, Georgia is now ready to step up to the senior drag racing level and learn more about the sport. This transition was prompted when Georgia received an offer to race for Wayne Batson. “I was just having a casual chat with Wayne about my plans for the future and how I’m finishing Junior Dragsters because I’m 17 when he said I could race his ute that he was no longer using,” she said. Drag racing sees automobiles compete two at a time to be first to cross the finish line. Typically a male dominated sport, Georgia is part of a growing number of young Soils,Mulches, Bush Mulch, Sand,Landscaping Blended Soils, Rocks, female drivers who are Blended Mulches, Brickie & Paving Sand, challenging the traditional Landscaping, Garden Makeovers, drag racing gender Local Gravel, Roadbase, Top Dressing Loam, stereotype in Australia. beyond Perth to participate in national competitions held in Queensland. She has won many awards, including the award for ‘Best Racer on the Day/Night’ in a recent drag racing competition. “I’m hopefully looking to bring some more trophies home in the new car,” she said. Drag racing is the perfect sport or hobby for people like Georgia who enjoy driving fast cars. All racing takes place in a safe and supervised environment, and unlike ‘hoon’ drivers and street racers who cause havoc and endanger public safety, drag racing is one hundred per cent legal. As well as having a good time, Georgia

has learnt the value of sportsmanship. “Yes, you lose. Accept it. Learn from it and keep moving forward. There is no need to be a sore looser. Always be a good sportsman, shake hands at the end of the race and just enjoy yourself,” she said. When asked about her future ambitions, Georgia said she would continue racing for the next couple of seasons before taking a break in her mid 20’s to work and travel the world. “My favourite thing about racing is how much of a team sport it is and how many friends I’ve made on the journey…

lifetime friends!” The Valley Reporter would like to congratulate Georgia on her transition from Junior Dragsters to the senior drag racing level. We wish her all the best in her future racing endeavours. The Rainbow Yogis have had a very exciting, creative and energetic few weeks. We ended the term with performances of our yoga dance sequences at our After School Yoga class, and a fun morning tea for our toddler yogis. We had a great turn out for our end of term Children’s Yoga Art Exhibition, with all 30 pieces of art displayed at the Roleystone Family Centre. Major prizes were awarded at this free event to Freya for her amazing “Focus” canvas painting, and Cameron, for his sculpture of “Downward Dog Pose”. All children were awarded with a prize and a certificate of participation from Rainbow Pammy, whilst we sipped on freshly made chai tea and nibbled on homemade snacks. A big thank you to all the parents and children who attended to help keep the Rainbow Yogis Community breathing and flowing. Last week, we also experienced one of the most energetic school holiday workshops we have been apart of. Odai Affotey from Oz Drum and Dance joined Rainbow Yogis for an amazingly lively yoga and drumming workshop. With 25 yogis and/or drummers attending, as well as parents, this workshop sure was kicking! We very much look forward to the next one. Rainbow Pammy. Carmel Weet-Bix Factory goes Gluten Free Australia’s top selling breakfast cereal, Weet-Bix, is now available in a gluten free option, with the launch of Gluten Free Weet-Bix.

Over the past six months, Sanitarium has re-commissioned the entire Carmel-based Weet-Bix factory into a dedicated gluten free manufacturing site. “We are committed to ensuring there is no risk of gluten contamination in the manufacturing of Gluten Free Weet-Bix, so not only have we dedicated an entire factory to its production, we also have a rigorous allergen management process in place,” said Mr Saunders. “This commitment is what you’d expect from Weet-Bix, Australia’s most trusted breakfast food.” Todd Saunders, General Manager at Sanitarium Health & Wellbeing Australia, said Gluten Free Weet-Bix is a significant innovation which represents Sanitarium’s ongoing commitment to offer a variety of nutritious breakfast options that meet the needs of consumers and their dietary requirements. “Gluten Free Weet-Bix has been developed for people with Coeliac disease. Also, people who have been advised by a health professional to avoid gluten or wheat can enjoy a greattasting wholegrain breakfast.” Sanitarium nutritionist and Accredited Practicing Dietitian Trish Guy said that, like the original Weet-Bix Australians have grown up with, Gluten Free Weet-Bix is a great way for consumers to start their day with a nourishing wholegrain breakfast. “Gluten Free Weet-Bix is made with sorghum grains, which are naturally gluten Gift Vouchers Available Book now for Melbourne Cup Lunch free, and has a 96% wholegrain content. 13 TON BRIDGE LIMIT AFFECTS LOCAL CONTRACTORS

The Valley Reporter recently published an article addressing new bridge load limit signs placed before the Croyden Road Bridge in Roleystone. Installed by Main Roads, the load limit signs along Brookton Highway and McNess Road are designed to alert truck and heavy vehicle drivers about the 13 ton weight restrictions in place over the Croyden Road Bridge. Fred Armenti of F & M.J. Armenti Bobcat and Tip Truck is one of many local contractors affected by the recent load limit changes. “I drive a truck for my business. My truck weighs 13 tons, but when I take materials to jobs, I’m up to 22 tons,” Mr Armenti

told The Valley Reporter. The signs mean that heavy vehicle drivers exceeding the 13 ton load limit are now required to use an alternative route to reach their destination. “I’m not supposed to use the bridge but I’ve been driving over it for 26 years and it hasn’t moved in that time. I’m not intending to stop now.” Mr Armenti also pointed out that some garbage trucks weigh more than 13 ton. “I don’t know what the rubbish truck drivers are doing but I think they weigh more than 13 ton empty. I doubt they want to drive all the way around the top just to collect half a dozen bins.” With the fire season fast approaching, the sign changes also raise questions about fire engine access to local residents via the Croyden Road Bridge. Depending on their size, some fire engines also weigh in excess of 13 tons. According to Mr Armenti, local residents and businesses did not receive any notification of the recent changes. “The signs just turned up. I rang the City of Armadale and I was told they knew nothing about it as well.” Mr Armenti isn’t the only person who has been affected by the 13 ton load limit signs. “There is still a lot of housing and building going up in Araluen, and no contractor is going to haul an extra 10-15 kilometres to get to a job.” There are many local

contractors who hold similar views and continue to question the motives behind the change. “Why has the bridge been given a load limit? I’m not sure what it is trying to achieve. The silly thing is it’s not even a bridge. It’s just a culvert under the road, not physically a bridge.” Sky O’Brien.

The September long weekend saw the Kofukan Karate Roleystone Dojo head down south on their annual family camp. This year the campers had a change of scenery from the scenic Pemberton to the popular food and wine region of Margaret River. Taunton Farm in Cowarumup was the new base for the weekend and provided a central location for each family to undertake a wide variety of activities from wine tasting, cave tours, chocolate tasting and golf. Despite a severe weather warning, the group met on Saturday night for cheese, wine and a good catch up. Sunday saw some families jumping the fence to 3 Oceans for a delicious and hearty breakfast before spending the day relaxing around the caravan park. The kids remained entertained by the big jumpy pillow, toasting marshmallows, the array of farm animals, and feeding time at 5.30pm. Most of the campers headed home on Monday after a well-deserved break, ready to do it all again next year. Brooke Williams.

ROLEYSTONE KARATE MARGARET RIVER CAMP

ANOTHER ROLEYSTONE SENIORS HOUSING UPDATE Just wanted to advise the community that at this time I have had correspondence from the Minister for Planning, John Day, who advises that it will be up to the City of Armadale to decide whether to initiate a rezoning of the primary school site, if it is formally requested. At this stage, I have no information as to whether a formal application with appropriate payment has been lodged. I have had a meeting with Mayor Henry Zelones, who has agreed to our request that the City would get together the appropriate

stakeholders and agencies, so that they can work through the issues that appear to be negating interest in proceeding at this time with purchase of site for Senior’s housing. The Mayor agreed also that Kelvin Oliver, our planning consultant, would be invited to represent the Roleystone Karragullen community. I am hopeful that we are still in there with a good chance of succeeding. Pat Hart, Coordinator Roleystone Seniors Housing Committee.

Thinking of Serpentine Jarrahdale Residents As many of you would be aware, the possibility of the merger of City of Armadale with all or part of the Serpentine-Jarrahdale Shire is closer to becoming a reality. My concerns about the huge financial tax on all residents from both Councils will undoubtedly also become a reality in the coming years. While the financial side is a major concern for all, the amalgamation on the community-social side will obviously only impact on the residents of Serpentine-Jarrahdale, who will become ratepayers of the City of Armadale. While their town names will not change, and the impact of amalgamation on their day-to-day lives should not change, the major change will be losing the connection to a very country-style Council, and becoming citizens of a fast-growing, urbanized City. For some, it may be welcomed, but I believe it may be difficult to accept for many others. I have lived in the City of Armadale for over 40 years, and through my friendships and previous Councillor role, I have a reasonable understanding of the various communities within the Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale. The sense of place and belonging in the smaller towns is very evident. Like

Roleystone and Karragullen, there are families who have been in that area for years, many of them from pioneering families who have seen and been part of the growth of Serpentine-Jarrahdale. It is still very much a rural area, even whilst under threat of development in some places. I recently visited the SerpentineJarrahdale Landcare Centre with the two officers from Armadale-Gosnells Landcare, to share knowledge and to gain an understanding of the similarities and differences in the aims and objectives of each Landcare organisation. When amalgamation does take place, we believe it is critical that both Landcare organisations have this relationship of trust, in which they can look for and seize opportunities to assist each other. I hope that along with all the work that the Shire of SerpentineJarrahdale and the City of Armadale will have to put in place to amalgamate the intricacies of Council business, that there are also some plans in place to address and acknowledge the social impact on Serpentine-Jarrahdale residents. Pat Hart.

It has been 100 years since the beginning of World War I. What were the women doing at home to support the men fighting in ‘The Great War’? Over the years we have learned so much about the role of our men, but our women also faced trials, endured hardships and triumphed during World War I. Bobbie Oliver, Associate Professor of History at Curtin University will enlighten us about this era of history on the home front. Sunday, 26 October 2014, from 2pm to 3pm at the Armadale Library, Armadale Central Shopping Centre. Refreshments will be provided. The event is free but bookings are essential. Visit the events page at library. armadale.wa.gov.au or call 9399 0125 to book.
