With the change of the seasons, we are beginning to see the change of sports in our local area as well. See this month’s issue of the Valley Reporter for registration dates and contact details for Aussie Rules and netball. There are also a range of community groups promoting their classes/events, so if you’re interested, make sure you mark down their important dates on your calendar. Many of these groups have volunteers in their ranks, so why not nominate them now for the Ultimate Volunteer Award? See page 9 for details. Last month, the call went out for a story on a local star. To our surprise and delight, a reader kindly submitted an article and some great photographs. Turn to page 12 to see who in your local community is shining bright. Another touching farewell story has been submitted by our local Home Vet Service, so make sure you grab the tissues for this one. See page 11 for the

On Wednesday the 30th of January, we were saddened to come across the remains of a mature “Children’s Python” (named so because it is harmless) killed on the junction of Soldiers Road and Butcher Road. It is possible that the driver came upon the snake suddenly, and was unable to avoid hitting it, however the approach to the bend prevents traveling at higher speeds, making it likely that the killing of the snake was intentional, borne out of our human instinctive fear of snakes. We ask you, when you next see a snake, pause and consider that it may not be as much of a threat as you think, and is an important part of the balance of our ecological system. Out of respect for the snake, and to ensure that other animals feeding off the carcass wouldn’t meet the same fate, the body of the Children’s Python was removed from the road. A Flowery Tale I was minding a Blue Heeler called Ginger for my friend Richard, when I decided to visit my grandchildren over in Parkland. After the initial introduction to the home dogs and children, everyone settled in for some pleasant family time. I soon became aware Ginger wasn’t about. It was a big property, and after a quick look about the house, I scampered out the back. A faint bark and whimper led me to the large marron pond, which I found Ginger floundering in. Without hesitation, I jumped in. Once I reached her, I pulled her up and waded neck-deep through the water back to the edge. Unfortunately the sides were covered in thick black plastic which made it impossible to clamber up the sides. I tried again and again, but with no luck. I was in trouble. I called for help from the children, whom I could hear playing, but got no response. In the meantime, I was freezing, losing strength, and still holding poor Ginger. To pass the time and keep up my spirits, I started singing opera arias from my past. Into the third aria, I heard one of the kids yell “Where’s Grandad?”, at which point they heard my singing, and found me. Once rescued, I sat exhausted on the bank, feeling sorry for myself. As I sat, I saw a small tin shed nearby. Peeping out of it was this beautiful flower, which was a sub-tropical bloom. I thought “How is this flowering so well, in hot February, stuck in this old tin kerosene can?” I was eventually able to get a bulb, and grow from it. This was three years ago, and I’ve just finished watching my beautiful Spider Lily Serendipity flower this February. Benjamin Seabrook, Roleystone.

Borrello Park Toilets I was disturbed to discover that our two local Councillors Wielinga and Nixon, supported by the majority of other Councillors have moved to use public open space (POS) funds for this area to build toilets at Borrello Park. This is an item that has been on the go for well over 2 years, meaning that the spending of these POS funds on reserves in Roleystone have been constantly held up. At February’s Technical Services Committee meeting, City of Armadale Officers had responded to this initiative with a detailed report, which I encourage you all to take some time to read. To do so, look up “City of Armadale website agendas minutes from Technical Services 4 February.” The report very clearly outlined all the physical, financial and social constraints in constructing toilets at this reserve, all of which they stated were reasons behind their recommendation that the toilets should not be constructed at this time. Furthermore, they advised that the POS money should be spent on constructing seating and tables at a number of reserves. The amount of POS funds available is $248,000, with the cost of toilet construction estimated to be up to $340,000, which would mean at least $100,000 in additional funds would have to come from the Council’s budget. The cost of annual maintenance due to the constraints of the site and type of toilets required would be an extra $22,000 annually. According to the

details of a survey undertaken by the Council of Roleystone, 60% of residents who responded said they did not support the construction of toilets at Borrello Park, preferring the POS money be spent on the various other passive reserves in Roleystone. Councillors have clearly not fully considered the Officers’ report, as well as the community’s response to this huge and unjustified use of public open space funds. They have gone on with the support of all but one Councillor, have voted to ignore this formal Council Officer recommendation, and are now waiting another month for the Council to bring out a Public Toilets Strategy. Surely if an Officer’s report clearly states the many impediments and community concerns to the construction of these toilets, why should a strategic toilet strategy from the Council say any different? Is it just that it must be the Councillors’ way or no way? There has been no justification for the direction which the Councillors have taken, and they have made no move to speak about this item at the Council meeting, despite the opportunity to do so. I realise that once the Toilet Strategy is released, it is highly likely that if Borrello Park is mentioned, it will be identified as a low priority. One can only hope that the extremely poor quality Karragullen Oval toilets are high on that strategic toilet list, and that any additional Council budgeted funds will see those toilets made a priority. I ask again, why did the Councillors choose to ignore the Officer’s report and results from the community survey, and decide to stall the release of the public open space funds for this precinct? roleystone SENIOR football club Pre-Season Training It is great to see so many faces on the training track, but we will need more numbers in order to be a successful team in 2013. If you are keen to play football this year, come down to Cross Park on Monday and Wednesday nights. Training sessions start at 6:15pm. During the pre-season, Andrew Walkley and I have been taking training sessions which include drill, skill and lots of running. On Wednesday the 6th of February, 36 players completed the beep test with some great results. Mitchell Collins and Michael Saffioti set new club records by reaching 16 and 15.8. Wow, what a start to the year for the Acoustic Folk Roots & Blues! Within minutes of starting, there were very few spare seats left in the Wygonda Lounge. Clearly, trying a new area at the Roleystone Country Club has paid off. There were several new faces present, and a whole range of music enjoyed throughout the afternoon. In honour of the 54th anniversary of his tragic demise, we began with a small tribute to music legend Buddy Holly, followed by folk tunes, and some easy listening. Newcomers, Lee, Ben and Dave, (known as the Acoustic
Trio) did two sets of their own compositions, modern acoustic rock with outstanding harmonies. After came a short blues jam session with local entity Erhard on harmonica, Richard on violin, and myself on slide guitar. The afternoon finished in the style of Djago Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli, with Richard on violin and his off-sider on guitar, playing a great Gypsy Jazz duo. When asked to give advice to current Year 12’s Alex says it is important to surround yourself with people who will encourage and support you. “A little bit of encouragement makes a big difference, as do happy positive people. You’ll feel better with them around you” says Alex. Both students credit their teachers with giving them the tools they needed to survive their final year of study. “The teachers were my gurus and their knowledge and experience was my guide. A healthy relationship with the teachers was a crucial element of success. They became more than just teachers; they were family” says Saiuj. Kanyana Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre Needs Your Help How time flies! It’s February already, and time to start thinking about our 2013 Open Day. Last year’s Open Day was a great success, thanks to the generosity of volunteers and support of the local community. We were able to raise approximately $15,000 in total! The Open Day is our biggest fund-raising event of the year, and as such, it’s important that we maximize our potential income. With this in mind, we’ve decided to investigate the possibility of holding a 2 day event this year, on the 4th and 5th of May. After all, if we’ve gone to all the effort of setting up for one day, then why not consider two? We know that weekend family time is extra special, so our quest to find enough willing volunteers is a difficult one. This is where you come in. If you would like to coordinate a stall or can help out for just a few hours on Saturday or Sunday, we would very much appreciate it. We’ll keep a record of all your offers of help, and then decide whether or not a 2 day
event is achievable. If not, we’ll just go ahead and focus on creating a spectacular one-day event. If you can’t commit to helping on a stall, perhaps you can assist with setting up or packing away. Maybe you’re a whizz in the kitchen, and can bake something delicious for us to sell. You could even donate something from our Wish List; stall holders, stall coordinators, face painters, marquees, gazebos, raffle prizes, trestle tables, coffee beans, a coffee cart, a mobile cool room, unwanted christmas gifts, and potted plants. Food donations such as sausages, burgers, onions, burger buns, sausage buns, ketchup, homemade cakes, jams and chutneys would also be appreciated. This opportunity was exclusive to 2012 JX and YPS Athletes, parents and coaches only. JX Swimmers had the chance to interact with athletes from the Energy Australia Swim Team in a pool session, as well as listen to a talk from Stephanie Rice. YPS athletes also got a motivational talk, as well as a Q&A session with the team. It was a fun morning, which Monique left after receiving many signed autographs.

Switch your thinking! has been awarded a Keep Australia Beautiful Beverage Container Recycling Grant to build novelty recycling machines which have appeared at community events in the Cities of Armadale and Gosnells. The creations have been built by local Perth artists. The creations have been named Canivals due to their resemblance to carnival games. In early July, I was asked to visit Rousseau, a 13-year old long-haired German Shepherd who was having trouble with arthritis, weakness in his back legs, and urinary incontinence – all common problems in geriatric pets. Rousseau had been treated previously with anti-inflammatory needles and tablets, but on their own, they were not enough to treat his condition. His owners Murray and Tracey feared that it might be time to help their beautiful big dog pass away peacefully, and were very relieved when I suggested that we see if Rousseau could respond to some at-home treatment. It was quite a challenge trying to find any acupoints in such a longhaired dog, but with each acupuncture session, the owners reported a noticeable improvement in Rousseau’s condition,
which was very encouraging. I’m happy to say that the acupuncture also sorted out his incontinence. For a couple of months, I treated Rousseau monthly with acupuncture, then visited more frequently when his strength deteriorated. By this time, Rousseau was nearly 14 years old, and we didn’t know whether he would spend another Christmas with his family. I prescribed a Chinese herbal formula 2 days before Christmas, and was overjoyed to hear that his family enjoyed a wonderful period of quality time looking after him whilst on holidays. Still, we all knew that these were his last days, and I’m sure his family treasured that time with him. I became very close to this beautiful dog myself, and spent a lot of time with Rousseau and his family, sitting around chatting, observing my hairy patient, and assessing his ups and downs in his final days. He was a great patient for acupuncture, and I felt that he knew it was to help him. Eventually, Murray and Tracey asked me to help Rousseau to pass away peacefully at home. They thought that he had decided that it was time to go, so he could be with me in spirit for my exams. On the 15th of January, just 2 days before my acupuncture exams, Rousseau made his journey to Rainbow Bridge. I owe Rousseau for all that he taught me, and thank his family for their trust and friendship in a difficult part of their lives.

Han’s Handywork, Star Quality! After reading your advert in the local Valley Reporter, I decided to send in some photographs of this local star. Hans had never built a pizza oven before, but I enclose a photograph of the finished product, which I am amazed to say was completed in just 4 days. We use it often, and have shared it with family and friends on many occasions. Hans transformed the block we live on, from what was part of the old orchard to our beautiful European style garden, complete with willows and roses, with nothing but his own two hands. oleystone Tee-Ball R and Baseball Club Inc. Major It’s all go at RTBC again, after what has SponSor hopefully been a nice long Christmas break. There’s no rest for our U11’s states team however, as they have continued to train and attend carnivals throughout January and February in preparation for the March State Championships at Langley Park. They were also fortunate enough to be Perth Heat “Baseball Buddies” for a night. The team were given a tour of the grounds and facilities, got to meet and chat to the players, and ran out with the team as the game was about to begin. Thanks must go to Cap Sante Oceania for sponsoring the night, Jaymie Cox from Perth Heat for taking such good care of us, and of course the Heat players for giving us such a thrilling win. Our Under 8’s had a nice surprise at our last game in December, when Santa turned up at Springdale Oval on one of the Roleystone fire trucks, complete with lights and siren blaring. Tee-ball games were abandoned as players fled the field to greet Santa and receive their lolly bag. Big thanks as always to Noel Plowman, Andy Briggs, and of course Santa! Our AGM and Trophy Presentation Day will be held at Springdale on Sunday the 10th of March, starting at 4:00pm. All committee positions will be declared vacant so that a new committee may be voted in. If you can spare a small amount of time, or would consider sharing a role, please put your hand up. The next Field Day, March the 17th, will be a Dieback Treatment Day held at Stinton Cascades Reserve, on Gardiner Road in Karragullen. We will be carrying out preventative treatment to the area adjacent to Gardiner Road, commencing at 9:00am and finishing at 12:00pm. Participants will be able to borrow equipment to treat their own trees against

Late last year, a call was sent out to the Roleystone community for members to establish a committee to launch a professional market able to compete with Perth’s popular market scene. It seems they have done it. On Sunday the 3rd of March, Roleystone will be holding its first market ever. With professional stall-holders already booked in from both Roleystone and beyond, it promises to be a great quarterly event for the community. Local vendors such as Michelle from Little Bird Quilts and Judy from Wildthyme Natural Soap are coming along, as well as Michelle from MC Nappies, and Alain from Sacred Designs. “We are looking for high quality locally crafted products and produce”, Markets Co-ordinator Maria Ford has said. “We want to
ensure that the Roleystone Markets will become a fixture in the Perth market scene, a “can’t miss it” event for the Roleystone community, and the community of Perth as a whole as well.” The first market will be a twilight market from 3:00pm to 7:00pm, held in conjunction with the City of Armadale’s Concert in the Park, with musical entertainment provided by the Roleystone Musicians Club. A diverse range of food stalls will be available for a great Sunday evening meal, with stuffed spuds, Malaysian, vegetarian, Cappucino Xpress, donuts, ice cream and the essential sausage sizzle all on offer. Come to the oval on the corner of Jarrah Road and Robin Road, and check out what great work has been done. We’ve got the sprinklers on so the grass can be brought up to its usual lush greenness. There is plenty going on at Roleystone Community College as a new school year begins. In the last week of the holidays, the P&C uniform shop team and their additional group of volunteers were busy making sure that all the prepaid orders were ready for collection, and that the shop was stocked for parents’ last minute purchases. They did a magnificent job in the lead-up to the first day of school, ensuring that the College’s 800+ students were all in uniform. In fact, the large number of new enrolments across all years of the College meant that the uniform shop team were kept very busy on the day, which had record sales. Thanks go to Ken, Kylie, Carolyn, Amy, Penny, Sandy, Steph, Bindi, Sairai, Julie-Anne, Sandra, Lyn, Debbie, Tracy, Rakia, Eunice, Stacey, Heather, Dorte and Lorraine. Over the Christmas break, the City of Armadale completed an excellent schedule of works which has produced an effective flow of traffic on Brooks Road before, during, and after school times. The “Kiss and Drop” zone is only accessible via a left hand turn, so vehicles entering Brooks Road from Raeburn Road with the intent of accessing this area are now required to use the new roundabout facility, to accommodate the change to our traffic management plan. For new Community College families, please note the “Horseshoe car park” off of Raeburn Road is for staff only. Additional parking for families is the “Early Childhood” (K/PP) car park off of Brooks Road, and the embayment parking on both Brooks and Raeburn Roads. The Roleystone Community College now has traffic management and car parking arrangements which are the envy of most public school settings. The Honourable Peter Collier MLC, Minister for Education, visited the College on Thursday the 14th of February, and was provided with a tour of the site by the Principal, as well as Head Boy Tele Arotis and Head Girl Danelle Tilley. Highlights of his visit included the new Film and Television Suite, the Year Seven Secondary Teaching and Learning program, the Sustainable Outdoor Garden Classroom and the highly acclaimed Rock and Water program. In addition to the new playground, the wonderful Good Shepherd Parent Group completely funded the renovations and expansions of the Early Childhood Classrooms. New entrance points, landscaping, paving, work spaces, kitchen, toilets and learning spaces have been created. We are very proud of our development, and of the involvement of our School Board, Parent Group and Administration in realising these dreams.
Good Shepherd Welcomes the New Year The community of Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School in Kelmscott were given the opportunity to celebrate the start of the new school year, at their annual Welcome Back BBQ on Friday the 8th of February. The night was greeted with a wonderful sense of anticipation and excitement as parents, teachers and children gathered together on a warm summer evening. As usual, the school BBQ was supported by the Parent Group who organised the entertainment for the night. Children had a wonderful time jumping on the bouncing castle, playing table tennis and catching up with friends while their parents and teachers enjoyed a friendly chat. On Sunday the 10th of February, the community came together once again at our local Parish for the Commissioning Mass. This was a time for the families of Good Shepherd to join the School Board, Parent Group General Committee, Parish Catechists, school staff, Year 6 leaders and for all students to dedicate the coming year to God. It has been lovely to see all students return so enthusiastic and keen to participate in the many traditions in our school. We are looking forward to an exciting year in our beautiful school, and especially looking for opportunities to live our 2013 Motto, “I am responsible for learning through Faith, Love and Laughter.”

The offer of half-price Membership in our last report proved to be extremely successful, with 28 new Members joining the club over the last 3 weeks. Don’t forget, we are still offering a once only Membership fee of only $22 per person, with said Membership expiring on the 1st of July 2013. We have opened up our new restaurant, “Windows on Wygonda” on Friday nights, and the two nights it has been open thus far have seen many Members enjoy the excellent cuisine of chef Sue and her staff. The restaurant is open from 6:00pm to 10:00pm, and bookings are essential. From 9:00am to 3:00pm on the 9th of March, the club is holding a Fire Safety Day which all age groups are invited to attend. Members from the Roleystone Volunteer Bushfire Brigade will be on hand, and Narelle Stephen will have fire extinguishers etc for sale, with a special
rebate deal for seniors. In addition, if you join as a Roleystone Country Club Member on the day, you will receive a free CPR key ring. As promised, we have live music on Friday nights, and the place has been jumping with wonderful sounds. We have had the Ferrymen, Stu McKay and Lionel Morris all play at the club, delivering a diverse range of music. Look out for our “Green Day on the Green” on March 17th, St Patrick’s Day! Bring your blanket as this promises to be a great afternoon of Irish food and celebrations. Work beginning on dangerous intersection Tony Simpson MLA, the Liberal Candidate for Darling Range, was able to meet with workers at the intersection of Holden Road and Brookton Highway who are in the early stages of the upgrade of this dangerous intersection. Mr Simpson was approached by many residents about this intersection and was successful in obtaining a commitment early last year to improve it. Troy Buswell MLA, the Minister for Transport, wrote to Tony and confirmed that Mainroads
had costed the proposed works at $1.52 million and includes earthworks and the relocation of services and the bus bay. The workers are presently in the design stage of the project with work expected to be completed before Christmas. “This is one of the more complained about intersections in the Darling Range electorate” said Mr Simpson. “I am pleased that after this work is completed local residents will feel much safer using this intersection.”

Raw Avocado Chutney I love avocado, and what you can do with this divine gift of the earth is amazing! I love to eat them as they are, with a spoon or raw carrots straight out of their skin, in cakes, and as a dip. Here is a simple little recipe for you to experiment with as you please: Ingredients: 1 diced avocado 1 corn cob, cut kernels off (and set the cob aside for your next batch of homemade stock) 1 spring onion with green tops 1 red capsicum, diced 2-3 cloves of garlic, finely grated or blitzed in food processor 1 lemon zest and juice 2 tsp cumin Olive oil Sea salt to taste Pepper to taste (optional) 1 tsp chilli powder/or flakes or fresh chillies (optional) Fresh herbs (mint and /or coriander are great as is a combination of basil and parsley) Method: Combine the avocado, capsicum, corn and spring onion in a bowl. Combine the garlic, lemon zest and juice, herbs and spices and olive oil in a food processor. Add this mixture to the bowl of avocado and mix well. Check for taste adjusting as needed. Serve with raw vegetables, crackers, in your or your children’s’ lunch meal, this makes for a perfect snack or addition to any meal.

Roleystone artists Sonja Siroen and Ian Dickinson are having an exhibition and sale of their art at Genesis in the Hills Vegetarian Restaurant. Titled ‘‘Little Journeys’’, the exhibition will run from Thursday the 7th of March through to Sunday the 7th of April, during the opening hours of the restaurant. Viewing times will be from 10:30am to 5:00pm on Thursdays, and 8:30am to 5:00pm on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Sonja said, “For me, everyday, everything and everybody plays a part in the constant images in my head, so my little journey presently reflects my interpretations and connections with the Roleystone bushland. During my walks, I pick up remnants of leaves or bark, manmade items found in the bushland, grasses and seed pods, all of which all come together in a sculptural piece entwined with recycled fabrics, haberdashery odds and ends, plus whatever I find at the time on my floor! These creative processes help me create different impressions with my heart, my soul, and my paints.” Ian Dickinson will be exhibiting a collection of new oil paintings which are images based on local scenes and recent travels in WA. These smaller pieces, which have been painted on canvas or plywood, are a continuation of his style using unusual perspectives and subtle abstractions of design. Shapes in the landscape are explored and simplified to form the compositions. He hasn’t exhibited in Roleystone since 2008, and it will be his first time at Genesis.

THE DREAM BEGAN IN ARMADALE! Members of the Heart & Soul Men’s Shed in Forrestdale have been working daily on a small derelict replica of the HMS Endeavour, which was donated from the old Pioneer Village Armadale site in 2011. Guided by Brian Phillips, who was the shipwright on the Endeavour replica built in Australia from 1988 to 1993, the men were able to complete their own replica.

Many men contributed their knowledge, skill, time and effort to this project, including Barry and Brian Hicks, makers of the 700 wooden pulley blocks for the Endeavour replica. Barry also has a private museum in East Cannington which is full of memorabilia. Terrence Thompson, Tom Johnston, Lindsay, Marty Walsh, and modeller Harry Timmins spent untold hours working on the vessel. Jenny Scrayen was kind enough to add the finishing touches with the carved solid jarrah figure which looks out from the replica’s stern. This vessel definitely wont be sailing around Australia, but thanks to the help of the Australian Model Ship Society Inc, it will be proudly on display at many community events, for all to see and marvel at. The feeling on the day of completion was one of great appreciation for the men who built and sailed these lovely vessels.

Mining report attacks local jobs, would increase workers taxes In addition, predicted recommendations that FBT exemptions be removed from FIFO and DIDO workers were today revealed as true when the committee report was tabled in parliament. He said the changes would discourage FIFO practices. “As a young schoolteacher, I began my working life at a place called Wickham in the Pilbara where Robe Rover had a mine,” he recalled. “It was a company town. It is very expensive to put a place like that in situ and to transport the workers up there. They stopped doing company towns like that because it was just unaffordable. “This decision by the Labor government flies in the face of the fact that the Labor government in 1986 imposed the fringe benefits tax on housing subsidies for workers in remote communities. That has been blamed for the FIFO workforce.” Mr Randall said commentators are right in saying Australia is becoming the dearest place to do business. “If mining slows, local jobs will be lost. This is not good for workers in my electorate, or Australia,” he said.

They have highlighted how important the local Perth Hill Orchardists are to the WA economy.
Roleystone Autumn Festival 2013 The Roleystone Autumn Festival organisation is underway, the date has been set for Saturday 13th April 2013 10am-3pm. The event meetings in the lead up will be at 7:30pm on the last Friday of each month, at the Roleystone Country Club. Canning MHR Don Randall has lambasted a Government committee report on fly-in, fly-out and drivein, drive-out work practices saying some of the recommendations on fringe benefits tax arrangements would pose a threat to the jobs of more than 1,400 mining workers in his electorate. He said the report also recommends reviewing the Zone Tax Offset, meaning FIFO and DIDO workers could pay more tax. Mr Randall, with his electorate having the second highest number of FIFO and DIDO workers in the metropolitan electorates of Western Australia, yesterday delivered a parliamentary speech on the Cancer to the Bush or Saviour to the City report undertaken by the committee on regional Australia, headed by Tony Windsor MHR. In his address, he said the Labor Government was intent on damaging Australia’s mining industry because it wants to tax it out of existence. “Federal Labor’s taxation policies take a direct aim at our mining sector,” he said, discussing the flawed carbon and mining taxes.

The much anticipated Go for 2 & 5 Araluen’s Fremantle Chilli Festival 2013 will be held on the Esplanade, Fremantle on the weekend of 9th and 10th March. Floorball is still a relatively new sport in Perth. Originally from Europe, Floorball came to Australia in the late 1990’s, and has since progressively grown in popularity across the country. Likened to indoor hockey, Floorball is a fast and fun indoor sport for all ages to enjoy. The equipment is lightweight plastic sticks and balls, which are used to play within a small walled rink. Played with 1 goalie, 5 field players and others as substitutes, Floorball is played over 3 periods of 15-20 minutes each. Experience and skill are not required, as Floorball is easy to learn, and can be played at all levels and ages.
