This month I’m asking the community to dig deep into their pockets and show their compassion. Compassion is a sympathetic awareness of another’s distress, combined with a desire to alleviate it. Compassion is often shown through kindness and caring, and other displays of service and generosity. Charles Kingsley once said “I have made one human being, at least, a little wiser, a little happier, or a little better this day”, and I think it would be a great thing for all people from the community to achieve this as well. Roleystone local Kalani Grant has done it again! Go to page 4 to read the full story on how she won gold at the Golden Gloves National Open Tri Nations Boxing Tournament in Queensland. Fifteen very young and very lucky Auskick players from the Roleystone Junior Football Club played their hearts out on sacred turf at Patersons stadium. Check out the full story and the great photographs on page 8 and 9 of this issue. The IGA Perth Royal Show is Perth’s biggest
community event, attracting 400,000 visitors from the city and the country every year. If you are thinking about going, but dread the queues, fear no longer! Our local Roleystone Supa IGA has pre-sale tickets available now, but they’ll sell out soon, so hurry! Speaking of community events, our very own Roleystone Community Church is celebrating its Centenary with a feast fit for a King. Everybody is invited, so check out page 15 for further details. They say that a dog is a man’s best friend, and a local 6 year old Kelpie Cross called “Digger” has certainly proven it. This special canine, who protected his mistress from an attempted home invasion and was stabbed whilst chasing away the offenders, will be presented with a Bravery Award and Life Membership at the “Hero Hound Hall of Fame” event. September - a special time for Australia The first thing many Aussies will think of when you mention September is the AFL Grand Final, but there are plenty of other reasons that September is such a great month for Australia, especially in the symbolic sense. September the 1st is the first day of Spring in Australia, and as such is also our National Wattle Day. Since the first celebration of it in 1910, proud Aussies have welcomed the beginning of a bright new season by wearing sprigs of our national floral emblem, the golden wattle (Acacia pycanthia). Then we have our National Flag Day on September 3rd, which celebrates the first time that the flag we know and love was flown in 1901. The nature of our flag’s creation was by by necessity of war or rebellion, but by peaceful consensus. A competition was held, in which Australians were invited to make or present a design for
the country’s flag, resulting in the familiar standard that we use to represent ourselves today. It is definitely a flag of the people, made by the people, for the people. It has seen hard times, both on home soil, and abroad, but it has always been ours. Finally, we have the Battle for Australia Day, which falls on the first Wednesday of September. This year, that day was the 5th. It began back in 2008, when the Governor General Michael Jeffrey and the Government of the day gave the people of Australia a day to remember the Second World War, and to commemorate all those who had served and died in defence of their country. It is not a public holiday, so there are no obvious celebrations, which I think is a pity. Every school should have the chance to recognise and acknowledge this day, which pays tribute to a defining period in our nation’s history. Benjamin Seabrook, Roleystone.

Kalani Grant does it again! Roleystone local Kalani Grant has done it again, winning the Golden Gloves National Open Tri-Nations Boxing Tournament in Queensland with another technical knockout (TKO) and a score of 18 to 5. Across 3 days, more than 200 fights were held, with many interstate and international teams on hand, and no second chances for the losers. The 2012 Golden Gloves was certainly a special one for spectators. Overall there were 3 gold medals for the Perth based Fox Boxing Team, which is a fantastic result. With intense training 5 days a week, Kalani will continue to train for the State Tournament and the National Tournaments coming up. At 14 years of age, Kalani has a great boxing future ahead of her, and with the Olympic Games in only 4 years time, there will be plenty of hard work ahead of her too.

Our family recently found ourselves in the market to purchase a personal computer (PC) for the home. As we all know, purchasing a computer can often be a big, costly decision because of all the variables to consider, laptop or desktop? How much RAM? And what processor will you need to power your new computer? We knew we had to start by listing everything we would like our computer to do. Karizma Hair Studio has moved! The salon, which until recently was situated on Brookton Highway, opened its doors at its new location on the corner of Huntingdale Road and Pipit Close in Huntingdale on Monday the 3rd of September. Their new number is 9490 5533. Management has advised that you use this number only, as the other salon numbers will no longer be in use. Owner Suzzie has confirmed that this move is a temporary arrangement, and that Karizma Hair Studio will be up and running again in Roleystone in about a
year. Suzzie would like to express her thanks to everyone for their patience, support and good wishes during this process. She said “We were most overwhelmed, but we are so lucky to be amongst a fantastic community. On Saturday August the 25th, fifteen young Auskick players from the Roleystone Junior Football Club were invited to participate in the half-time entertainment at the West Coast Eagles versus Collingwood match at Patersons stadium. This was a big thrill for the young players who were selected from the Pre-Primary, Year 1 and Year 2 groups within the Auskick squads. Needless Roleystone Junior Football Auskick team in to say, their parents were the changerooms at Patersons stadium waiting very proud and quite excited for the half-time siren so they can play. to see their sons run onto the ground wearing the red and black NAB Auskick jumpers. An hour before bounce down, we all met outside the grounds, where we received our entry tickets and instructions on what we had to do for our halftime game. Near the end of the first quarter, the boys were taken down into the changerooms and prepared for their match. There was quite a lot of nervous and excited chatter by the young players about how many people were going to be

watching, who was going to kick the goal and which player was going to take a big mark. When the half-time siren blew, it was finally our turn to show the crowd of 45,000 how good the Roleystone boys are at playing Australian Rules. Running onto the ground, the boys faces lit up to see so many people watching, but once the umpire started the game, it didn’t take them long to show the skills they have been practicing all year. There were marks that rivalled those of Naitanui, and goals that drew as much applause from the crowd as LeCras’ did. There was even a chance to high five Rick “The Rock” Eagle during the game. At the end of the game, the boys had their photos taken on the oval and headed back down to the changerooms before returning back to their seats to talk about the highlights with their parents. To be able to play in front of such a large crowd at the home of Western Australian football is truly a special experience. I am sure that the boys and their parents will forever cherish the opportunity given to them, and I am proud to say that they were great ambassadors of the Roleystone Junior Football Club and the Roleystone MAJOR SPONSOR community. Acupuncture involves the balancing of energy which moves along pathways or channels within the body. These pathways are connected to internal organs as well as muscles and bones, in a similar way to our blood circulation network. The energy is accessible at certain points on the body’s surface. Unplugged Acoustic Folk, Roots & Blues The Unplugged Acoustic Folk, Roots & Blues went ahead at the Roleystone Country Club on Sunday the 9th of September, in spite of the Eagles playing finals football. As always, the dedicated musicians showed their enthusiasm for the performances. After the last session, disappointment had been expressed that there was no one of the fairer sex joining in, but Sunday saw our first lady, Gwen Young, give a superb rendition of “There Ain’t No Sweet Man Worth the Salt In My Tears”, originally sung by Martha Wainwright and covered by many artist since then. Following my article in the last Valley Reporter, a lot of people have expressed their surprise that acupuncture is used in animals, and have asked for more information. There is a long history of the use of acupuncture as a method of treating imbalances in the body which can lead to both acute and chronic disease. My research indicates that the earliest references to acupuncture in animals extends back to the ancient Chinese, who wrote about these treatments around 500 AD. Due to their close observation of animals and their environment, the Chinese were tuned into their animals’ habits, body language and physical body surface, and became aware of slight changes in these aspects. Many animal treatments were formulated during this period, but only became available in Europe in the late 1600’s, and finally spread to America and Australia in the late 1970’s.

Rachel Kierath is a local Roleystone resident who is currently fighting a battle against an aggressive breast cancer whilst pregnant. She was diagnosed and underwent surgery in January of this year, but discovered a re-occurrence of her cancer in June. She once again underwent surgery, and made the difficult decision to go ahead with her pregnancy, and fight for both her own life and her baby’s. She is undergoing an expensive regime of natural therapies, until the baby can be safely induced in October, at which time she will begin her costly post-baby cancer therapy. As a consequence, she is in the process of readying her house for sale in order to cover these costs. A New Beginning has been formed and we have been fundraising locally in Roleystone to assist Rachel with
her fight and to help with the ongoing costs of her treatment. We are holding a Quiz Night at the Roleystone Country Club at 7pm on the 28th of September. Attendance costs $10 per person, and tables of 8 are available. Meals will be available from 6pm until 7pm if anyone wishes to have a meal beforehand, otherwise bring nibbles for your table. Young writers from Y5-10 in many schools across the City of Armadale received wonderful accolades for their entries into this year’s Armadale Young Writers Award. “The City of Armadale has been committed to promoting writing and creative expression amongst young people in our local community for a long time now. This award is a perfect way to recognise their talent and congratulate them for their hard work,” said Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones. This year’s award received an impressive 108 entries in total, displaying the high standard of literary skills in the community’s youth. Rotary Mill Point and Belmont kindly funded free writing workshops presented by Doris Stutley for prospective entrants at local schools in the City of Armadale. An extraordinary garden in a breathtaking beautiful setting” “The bygone skill and art of Violinmaking is definitely not dead,” according to Araluen Botanic Park Foundation General Manager, Rod Ross. “It’s just established itself at Araluen Botanic Park,” he adds. From the 27 August, the quaint jarrah timber ‘Aspro Cottage’ at Araluen Botanic Park has been transformed into a violin-making studio/workshop that is accessible to the public. “This new drawcard is a totally different but very complementary and welcome addition to the park,” says Ross. The facility is operated by Joel Sheard, a local violinmaker who teaches others to play the violin and has recently commenced his Roleystone School of Violin Making, where the art of violin making can be learned through the process of constructing one’s own instrument. Joel is currently involved in the development of a new tool for violinmakers called a magnetic caliper. Armadale Youth Resources have received $4,640 from the Department of Communities to run a song writing and music workshop for young women that explore the themes of domestic violence, cyber bullying and saying no to living in a violent society. Tony Simpson MLA, the Member for Darling Range is encouraging local families to attend the Kelmscott Show this year, this show is the second longest running only being only beaten by the Perth Royal Show. “The 2012 Kelmscott Agricultural Show will provide even better value for local families with the State Government funding for free entry for younger children” Mr Simpson said. “The Barnett Government had committed up to $2 million to provide free show entry for children 12 years and under, when accompanied by an adult. However as the Kelmscott Show categorises children as 14 and under we have extended the age for this Show to children under 15” he said. It is part of a program that gives affiliated regional and metropolitan shows the opportunity to access funding to ensure all children get free entry to their local agricultural shows. “The Perth Royal Show, along with
more than 60 agricultural shows across the regions, is an important part of the fabric of WA,” Mr Barnett said. “This is the second consecutive year the State Government has provided free entry to children 12 years and under at the IGA Perth Royal Show; it’s a real contribution towards helping support WA families.” The gesture, which was to help promote the Year of the Farmer, would help build city-country relations and encourage attendance at agricultural shows across the State. “The Kelmscott Show plays a vital role in highlighting the value of the local agriculture sector, and gives children a valuable insight into where their food comes from,” Mr Simpson said. “It is a great opportunity for young people to learn more about the fresh, quality food produced in this State and the great career opportunities in this sector in the city and the country.”

Centrelink under-resourcing leads to long delays at Centrelink offices in his electorate were extremely helpful; however, the offices are significantly understaffed and underresourced and simply cannot deal with the huge increase in demand for services. He said he was disappointed at the poor response from Senator the Hon Kim Carr, Minister for Human Services, after he wrote to the Minister raising the issue in June. “The response was standard in every sense of the word; the Minister ironically apologises for his own delay in responding to my letter and even managed to cutand-paste repeat paragraphs of text,” Mr Randall said. Because the Minister failed to effectively acknowledge the problem, Mr Randall has now written to Centrelink’s General Manager bringing to light that the Government has not offered a viable and effective solution to the problem, and seeking assistance in getting the situation improved. “My constituents are trying to assist Centrelink by reporting their incomes or overseas travel but are continually being punished and are at risk of having their payments cancelled unless the issue is addressed urgently,” he said.

The Perth Staffordshire Bull Terrier Association shall be holding our inaugural “Hero Hound Hall of Fame” Family Fun Day on Sunday the 23rd of September at Rushton Park on Orlando Street, in Kelmscott, from 11:00am to 2:00pm. This event is being held to honour “Digger”, a local 6 year old Australian Kelpie Cross who protected his mistress from an attempted home invasion and was stabbed whilst chasing away the offenders. The PSBTA will be presenting Digger with a Bravery Award and Life Membership of the Club for his valiant efforts. The event will have a number of activities including dog agility, best trick and fancy dress competitions, a display of unique cars, raffles, giveaways, and a sausage sizzle. Some other attractions will include photo and autograph opportunities with our celebrity guests, Kima from the Big Couch on 94.5FM, and rugby player Matt Hodgson. Who knows, you might be chosen to be on a celebrity’s team for the races! There will also be a singer and display of unique cars. As this is a family fun day (as well as a fundraiser), the amusement rides and most events will only cost $2, with the sausage sizzle and drink costing $3 – a bargain by anyone’s standards. Digger’s vet bills were quite substantial, and a heavy burden to Maree Cowley, his unemployed mum. We hope to donate a substantial sum towards this bill from funds raised, and would very much appreciate any assistance you can offer in promoting the event. All dogs (except banned breeds) are welcome, but must be kept on a leash. There will be prizes galore to ensure all participants have a great time. Local constituents fed up with waiting times on Centrelink’s telephone service saw Canning MHR Don Randall take their grievances to the Australian Parliament. Mr Randall aired their concerns during a speech in the House of Representatives yesterday. “I am being continually contacted by constituents telling me how frustrated they are with having to wait an excessive amount of time on the telephone to report information to Centrelink,” Mr Randall said. “Some people who have not been able to get through to Centrelink on the phone have reported being kept on hold from anywhere between 30 minutes, to up four hours. “This issue is affecting a huge proportion of my electorate, particularly elderly residents receiving the age pension and others receiving disability support pensions. “Reporting this information is a legislative requirement. People need to update Centrelink on changes to their income, or to inform them of overseas travel, or they face getting their payments cancelled – but they can’t get through.” Mr Randall said he didn’t seek to criticise the work of Centrelink staff, saying the staff

We are now taking bookings for the Halcyon Stables Spring Holiday Camp, which will run from Monday the 1st of October to Friday the 12th of October. This camp caters to children aged 6 to 16 years of age, from beginners through to advanced riders. The five day residential camp costs $600 per child, with all meals and drinks being provided. If you’re not a fan of sleep-overs, but still want to do the five day camp, students can arrive at 9am and return home each evening for only $400 per child. Single day attendance costs $100 per child per day. Students are welcome to bring their own ponies, or ride one of mine. The Leukaemia Foundation is calling on the Perth community to shine lanterns of hope at Light the Night in Perth on 26 September Light the Night is the Leukaemia Foundation’s inspiring twilight walk to help cure blood cancer by raising funds for leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma research. In its fourth year, Perth’s event promises to be brighter than ever. “Light the Night is an uplifting, visually stunning event and more than 30,000 people are expected to take part across Australia this year,” said Carolyn Turner, General Manager of the Leukaemia Foundation in WA. Light the Night will be held at the Perth Cultural Centre on Wednesday 26 September, with thousands of families, friends and work colleagues gathering at twilight to shine beautiful lanterns of hope. Everyone who raises or donates $20 will receive a lantern to shine when they attend. • Gold, to remember a loved one • White, to reflect on their life with blood cancer • Blue, to support others There will be entertainment for all ages and as night falls moving stories will be shared as the special moment arrives – a gentle scenic walk to Light the Night. “We are asking the Perth community to sign up to attend one of many twilight events across the state, including the flagship event in Perth. People also have the option of hosting an event of their own,” said Carolyn. The Leukaemia Foundation aims to raise $2 million from Light the Night events across Australia this year. The money raised will fund research into finding better treatments and cures for leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and related blood disorders through the Foundation’s National Research Program. “Each week, 23 West Australians are expected to be diagnosed with leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma. Sadly, blood cancer is Australia’s second biggest cause of cancer death, claiming a life every 2 hours. Clearly, the ongoing need for research is great,” she said. The Leukaemia Foundation receives no ongoing government funding and relies on support from the community and corporate sector to fund its Vision to Cure. An exhibition celebrating “Nature” by local Perth hills artists has been an immense success. The dynamic exhibition, inspired by the four elements of nature, was on display at the Art Gallery in the new Cultural Centre in Kalamunda from the 12th to the 31st of August 2012. Sometimes it seems like there just isn’t enough time to fit in the most important things in life, like duties to family. After 20 years working in the automotive industry, Bedfordale local and father of two daughters, Julian Graziani realised this and decided to become a mobile mechanic. He built a mobile workshop on his trailer, kitted it out with a full range of equipment and he’s now on the roads, ready to go. Julian, who grew up in Roleystone, still remembers his first car and the fun he had driving it around the neighbourhood. It comes as no surprise that his career choice was that of motor mechanic. Next he started building and racing vehicles for rallies, off road ventures, as well as 4WD’s, given him experience in high performance vehicles. His wife Rosalind is now ready to rejoin the workforce, but since their children are still at school, someone needs to be available to do the school runs and be there for emergencies. To make this possible, Julian has opted to fit in his work around school hours. He’s found the perfect vocation of assisting local families with their cars without the inconvenience of delivering them to a workshop. The Graziani family live in Churchman’s Brook, and Julian has wide experience working as a mechanic both locally and further afield. He sees a need for a top-class mechanic who will come to homes or workplaces and keep your car (and everything else mechanical) running sweetly. He believes that quality service and honest dealing is the way to build a loyal clientele. You’ll probably see him on the road one day soon.

Former Roleystone Theatre performer gets into the 1930‘s swing Therese Cruise, a former performer for the Roleystone Theatre, wants to take you back in time this October to help solve a murder mystery. In conjunction with the Maylands Peninsula Sports and Recreation Club, she is appearing in “Who Killed Candy Sweetness?” for the Rag and Bone Theatre Company. It’s a chance to enjoy a three course dinner and a 1930’s-style show which will include the audience in the investigation. Written by Perth local Bree Vreedenburgh, and directed by the award-winning Jane Sherwood, “Who Killed Candy Sweetness?” also features The Hullabaloo Hoppers, the Perth Swing Dance Society’s popular performance troupe. After 1930’s radio ballroom singer Candy Sweetness is killed, Detective Robert Soxx is on the case to find her murderer. His prime suspects include charismatic band leader Smoothy McGroovy, millionaire playboy Lonegan Megabucks and Bess, Tess and Jess from the musical trio, The Schless Sisters. The waiters, maître D’, chef and even members of the audience may come under suspicion. Therese Cruise plays Jess, the youngest of the The Schless Sisters. “She’s part of an Andrew Sisters-like act and they sing for Smoothy McGroovy’s radio show,” she said. “Jess fancies she has a better voice than her sisters, and she hopes to one day become a solo artist like Ella Fitzgerald or Billie Holiday. Learning to harmonise with my stage sisters and finding how we work best together in our trio was a challenge but it was fun working it all out.” Over the past five years, Cruise has performed with Snapshot Youth Theatre Company in “Children of the Black Skirt”, Kelete Theatre’s take on the musical “A Slice of Saturday Night” and the Graduate Dramatic Society’s production of the Shakespearean comedy “Love’s Labour’s Lost”. She was named runner-up Best Actress for her role in “Children of the Black Skirt” and recently played Beatrice in “Much Ado About Nothing” at Roleystone Theatre. Cruise commented that it was the 1930‘s setting of “Who Killed Candy Sweetness?” that appealed to her the most. “I’m a little obsessed with eras such as the 20’s and 30’s, all the way through to the 50’s, because of the classic femininity and gorgeous outfits,” she said. “Getting to sing radio jingles and classic 30’s big band pieces were also an attraction.” Vreedenburgh, who is also the show’s musical director and stage manager, said she wrote “Who Killed Candy Sweetness?” because she always wanted to go to dinner and a show. “I’ve always been disappointed that I was born in the wrong era and couldn’t go to that classic periodical event, so my first inspiration was to give audiences the opportunity,” she said. An acting stint in Dimboola in 2010, in which she saw audience members being treated like guests at a country wedding, also whetted Vreedenburgh’s appetite for dinner theatre. “Searching around for something to base a show on, I read about a 1930’s dance hall in California called the Palomar Ballroom, where it’s said swing was launched by Benny Goodman,” she said. “It had nightly radio broadcasts, which drew the crowds, and the dance floor could hold 4,000 couples. Putting those things together, I came up with the idea of a 1930’s radio ballroom murder-mystery. The play is very tongue-in-cheek and the characters are all caricatures.” “Who Killed Candy Sweetness?” will play at 7:30pm on the 5th, 6th, 10th, 12th, 13th, 18th, 19th and 20th of October at the Peninsula Ballroom in Maylands. Batter Up The Roleystone Tee-ball and Baseball Club will kick off their season mid-October, with the Little League hosting the first home game of the season on Wednesday the 10th of October at Springdale Park. The tee-ball season starts on Saturday the 13th of October. The annual “Meet the Coach” Day was held on Saturday the 15th of September, giving players the opportunity to meet their teams and coaches, and to confirm training times. In 2012/13 the club has been fortunate to have secured ongoing sponsorship from a number of local businesses, sponsoring which is used to purchase uniforms. The grant was submitted by David Reilly, who has one son Ryan playing in the U13 Tee-ball team, another son Dean as a volunteer Umpire, and wife Lana, who Coaches and is an active Committee Member. The grant will be used to purchase new tee-ball pants. A big thank you to the Reilly family for their ongoing commitment to our Club. We still have some vacancies, in particular for the U8’s competition (PP to Yr 1), whose games are played at Springdale Park each Saturday morning, and the U13’s team, who play down at AK’s on a Saturday morning as well. Performing Arts Festival. The month began with 4 senior students representing the school at the opening Mass at St Mary’s Cathedral in Perth. Head Girl and Head Boy, Keely and Jason, proudly held the school flag as they processed into the cathedral with other student representatives from Catholic schools in and around Perth. The performances began with an interesting percussion ensemble performance by the Y6 class, who all played on plastic garden buckets and beetroot cans with chopsticks. The school’s 4 choirs featured all the students in Y3-6, who received high praise from the adjudicator for their fine performances. In addition to class choirs, the school is very proud of the fine performances by the Y5 & 6 Boys Choir and Girls Choir. A number of students performed as instrumental soloists at the Festival on a variety of instruments, including trumpet, saxophone, piano, clarinet and flute. The students in Y1 were very excited to be performing at the Festival for the first time, and delighted the audience with their animal costumes and rendition
of “The Very Cranky Bear”. The Y2 class shared a beautiful story called “The Lion Who Wanted To Love”, and were rewarded with a perfect report by the adjudicator. The Y4 class presented a wonderful play which had the audience laughing at their humorous exploration of fairy tales. The busy month finished on a fabulous high note with the news that the school band had won the Parents and Friend
Performing Arts Festival
The arts have been well and truly alive during the month of August for the students at Good Shepherd Catholic PS. Every student in the school from Y1-6 performed a wide variety of items during the month at the Catholic Schools
Federation Shield for being the most outstanding primary school band to perform at the Festival! The schools music teacher, Mrs Diana Newman was delighted with the tremendous efforts of the students, as well as the encouragement of the wonderful parents who were such enthusiastic audience participators during the busy month.
Athletics Carnival
On the 30th and 31st of August, all factions from Good Shepherd Catholic PS participated in their sports carnival. My favourite event was Turbo Javelin, which was closely contested between Matthew Knight and myself. In the end, it was so close that the tape measure was used to find that I won by only 80cms. There was also a ball event between the teachers, students, and parent leaders, with the teachers as the eventual winners! In the end the standings were clear, with Canning 4th, Xavier 3rd, Ward 2nd, and Forrest winning the shield with 1st place. Our sports teacher Miss Shaw is now preparing us for the Interschool Sports Carnival, so if you are up against us, watch out! Aaron Joachim, Faction Captain of Xavier.

Science Week Extravaganza

Science is more than good at Good Shepherd Catholic PS, it’s great! The subject is in its second year of being offered as a specialist class, and students continue to go from strength to strength in the area. Last week, the students were treated to a full week of celebrating science. The week kicked off with a visit from environmental scientist and Water Corporation Catchment Officer, Claire Robertson, who provided the upper primary students with a deeper insight to her field. The students were given the hands-on task of creating the best dam catchment and manufactured some brilliant designs. The lower primary students enjoyed a practical workshop examining earthworms, making their own worms out of polymer, and exploring chemical changes with a powder that instantly erupts into amazing artificial snow. The whole school had an open aquarium touch-pool experience, in which they examined clown fish, sea horses, star fish and anemones. The rest of the week saw more exciting
activities such as an incursion on water supply and conservation from the Water Corporation, a bridge building competition, constructing weather station instruments and an upper primary workshop from Einstein’s Top Secret Science. The junior primary students even turned an unused patch of school ground into a miniature bird sanctuary. Another highlight for students was a visit from secondary science teachers and some students from Lumen Christi College, who treated the primary pupils to a science roadshow. The students of Y6 lead lunch-time challenges including a paper plane competition, investigation station challenges, a science treasure hunt, a bubble blowing competition, as well a work display of the fantastic year 4 simple machine inventions. The winner of the Y3 gumball machine invention was displayed too! To top off the week, staff and students of Good Shepherd celebrated the different careers available in the field of science, with a whole school dress up day.
