We all have those occasions when we wish we could go back. To relive a special moment, to erase a mistake, undo something we said, or simply to a time when we didn’t have to buy industrial strength anti-wrinkle cream. So grab a cup of Mellow Bird’s and a Garibaldi and have a blast from the past with this month’s Turn Back Time edition. First up, for followers of fashion it’s good news…for AW17 everything old is new again. From leopard print shirts and lady-like skirts, to heritage hues and embellished shoes, it’s a classic case of “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” So ditch your tired tote for an Old Skool satchel and go straight to the top of the class! From satchel bags to skin that sags, turn back the clock with our age-defying makeup tips and Cut a Decade (without a facelift) with 5 haircuts that are guaranteed to make you look 10 years younger. Plus Rebecca Watts is here to tell us how to delay the signs of ageing by eating more fat…yes, fat! Sounds fishy to me. On the home front we step into the past for a masterclass in Period Living. From boudoir bedsides with oh là là, to antique interiors with je ne sais quoi, this autumn we see a return to the decorative that isn’t restricted by style or season. And while time waits for no woman, we’re keeping right up to the minute with the latest on-trend wall clocks. They’re a Sign of the Times. Finally we travel back in time as Sarah Mettrick transports us to an era when a mobile was something that hung above a cot and children didn’t build stuff on minecraft…but real dens… outside! I’m coming over all Swallows & Amazons. And to relive the thrills and spills of those bygone eras, jump abroad Kirsty France’s Vintage Vacations. It’s full steam ahead. We’ll be back next month with our Winter-Fest edition, but in the meantime #JointheConversation on facebook.com/theurbanfoxmediagroup.

CUT A DECADE

Katie Holmes

Look 10 years younger in less than an hour, with the haircuts that are as anti-ageing as a facelift!

BOB

LONG

Kylie Minogue

Long hair doesn’t have to be ageing. Simply pump up the volume with layers and movement around the face and if you haven’t tried it before style your hair in a side parting. It will open up your entire face, giving you a fresher and more youthful look.

Going shorter can give you a more youthful look. A bob that grazes the bottom of your jaw, frames the face, drawing attention to your best features. If you have fine hair, keep the cut blunt to make the hair look thicker. If your hair is coarse, opt for soft layers to keep it from looking bulky.

Cameron Diaz

Kate Mara

CROP For a quick age-defying boost, a crop is a fantastic way to revive your image. This look is both contemporary and sophisticated, which makes it the perfect anti-ager. For an effortless, wash-and-go look opt for the grown-out crop. For more versatility, a longer crop offers instant glamour.

FRINGE A great solution for an ageing brow is a fringe. Not only does it help hide forehead wrinkles, but sweeping it to the side draws attention to the outsides of your cheekbones, visually widening the face and creating the illusion of youthful fullness. And the good news is it works in combo with any of our other cuts too.

Emily Blunt

LAYERS As we get older hair tends to thin, so layers or a lob (layered bob) is a great way to create the illusion of more youthful, thicker and fuller hair. Adding just a few layers and breaking up the blunt contour of your hair, is all it takes to keep this style (and you) looking modern. URBAN FOX OCTOBER 2017 17

THE CLOCK In your Prime

Start by applying one of the new generation radiance primers which will help even your skin tone, blur pores and fine lines, boost skin luminosity, as well as keep your make-up in place for longer. Reduce any puffiness under your eyes, with a cooling gel or hydrating eye cream. MARC JACOBS PERFECTING FACE PRIMER, £32 BOBBI BROWN HYDRATING EYE CREAM, £33

Trick of the Eye

If you've performed the same makeup routine since your 20’s but the effects are no longer the same, instantly refresh your look with these simple tips and tricks.

Cover Girl

For your foundation, the overall effect you want to achieve is ‘dewy’, as this compensates for drier or rough textured skin that often occurs with ageing. Don’t try to paper over the cracks with a heavy formula, instead bring light and vitality to your face with a tinted moisturising balm or BB Cream. BOBBI BROWN BB CRÈME, £29.50

With brows becoming sparser, lashes less luscious and contours slackening, eyes are the first to show signs of ageing. Fill in any gaps in the brow using a powder or pencil. Add depth to the eye by applying colour to the socket line with a luminous shadow. Finally boost your lashes with a volume mascara, creating bulk at the roots to give the impression of thicker lashes.

Flush of Youth

Forget contouring, doing it yourself can be difficult and if you get it wrong there’s a risk you’ll look even older than you actually are. Opt instead for a cream blusher, with a dewy formulation. The sheer texture should melt into your foundation base, leaving you with a subtle healthy glow.

CLINIQUE SHADOW TINT FOR EYES, £18 DIOR POWDER EYEBROW PENCIL, £20 MARC JACOBS MAJOR VOLUME MASCARA, £22

Pump Up the Volume

As you age you lose definition in your lips. Always outline using a lip pencil, blending over the lips as a base, before applying a lip stain or balm. Your lips will look instantly plumper, smoother and luscious. Avoid dark colours as these will make your lips look smaller.

ONE FIT

WONDER? Like oversized blazers and although not a long lived fad, continues in the industry with weighted ‘fitness skinny jeans, the fitness hoops’ being introduced to help burn industry has seen its fair calories and slim your waistline. share of trends, says Alexis Gray of Uppingham JAZZERCISE Former Broadway star, Judi Sheppard School Sports Centre. Missett, introduced a combination Discover the movers and of aerobic exercise and jazz dancing shakers that have shaped designed to slim and tone in the 1970s. It is still practised in 32 countries today! the history of fitness. All together now…jazz hands!

With 1 in every 7 people becoming members of gyms in the UK, the fitness industry continues to grow and like all industries has seen its fair share of different trends; from a simple hula hoop to people walking around the garden in circles to get those last steps and feel that 10,000 step buzz on their wrist. With influences from technology, dance crazes and celebrity role models, different trends have developed over time, some making a small cameo appearance others taking centre stage and still popular today. Here’s my pick of the most iconic fitness trends:

HULA HOOP

One of the most popular crazes in the 1950s ‘Happy Days’ era, Hula hooping

AEROBICS

Leg warmers and day-glo leotards were the trend in the 1980s with the likes of Jane Fonder fronting high-energy aerobic routines, providing an intense cardiovascular workout. Although thankfully fashion has changed, the popularity of aerobics classes paved the way for diversifications such as Aqua and Step aerobics, with many variations still seen in gyms today.

TAE BO

Billy Blanks an American taekwondo instructor, brought to homes in the 1990s his exercise trend combining taekwondo and boxing. Benefiting from increasing fitness levels through movement alone the classes are now taught worldwide.

SPINNING

The indoor cycling class, developed by Johnny Goldberg in the late 1980s and launched in 1993. Spinning has quickly dominated the fitness world. In fact it’s hard to find a gym in the UK today that doesn’t offer some kind of cycling based class.

ZUMBA

A successful concept developed from a fitness instructor forgetting his regular workout music for a class and freestyling to his own Latin albums from his car. Zumba uses elements of hip-hop, soca, salsa, samba, merengue and mambo. It’s an excellent cardio based exercise class and feels more like dancing with your friends than exercising.

WEARABLE TECHNOLOGY

Entering the industry with a simple pedometer the advances and popularity in smart technology has seen significant growth in fitness trackers, enabling wearers to track not only steps but also heart rate, calories burned and enter online communities to compete with friends. As for the future? With the fitness industry taking influences from society, social media and technology, who knows what might be the next big thing or the fitness equivalent to a ‘90s band reunion’. HEALTH & WELLBEING

EAT YOURSELF

YOUNGER “Fat makes you fat”. Not necessarily, explains Rebecca Watts from TheStudios40. This month she reveals how eating more of the right types of fat could be the key to staying younger. For years we’ve been told how eating fat is bad, but the truth is that fat has an important role in health. Fats are essential to many normal body functions. They’re a source of energy, are vital for growth development and cell functions, help maintain healthy skin and tissues, as well as transporting essential vitamins to where they’re needed. Omega 3 is a polyunsaturated fatty acid; a “good fat” important for our body to function. Omega 3 fats can be found in oily fish, oils, rapeseed, flaxseed, nuts and leafy greens. It’s recommended to eat at least 2 servings of oily fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines, tuna) each week. Although flaxseeds and chia seeds are also high in Omega 3, they are not converted in our bodies as efficiently and therefore fish is the best option. Try to avoid too many processed foods and cheap vegetable oils as these are rich in Omega 6. A diet high in Omega 6, counteracts the benefits of Omega 3 in our body. Omega 3 fatty acids are one of the most studied nutrients, and research suggests it’s vital for optimal health and longevity. Here’s how…

BRAIN HEALTH

The brain is largely made up of fat and needs a steady supply of fatty acids

for optimal performance. Studies have shown that Omega 3 intake can have significant benefits on the brain and its function throughout our lives infant brain development, depression, anxiety. Some research suggests that it helps protect against Alzheimer's disease and dementia, and has a positive effect on gradual memory loss linked to ageing.

HEART DISEASE

Fish eating communities have shown low rates of heart disease and stroke which in part is due to the higher levels of Omega 3 in their diet. Omega 3 has a positive effect on cholesterol, blood pressure, artery plaque and inflammation, all factors linked to heart disease. By ensuring you are getting sufficient Omega 3 in your diet, you will help fight off metabolic and heart decline as you age.

INFLAMMATION

Inflammation is a crucial part of our immune system allowing us to fight infection and repair damage. However chronic inflammation can occur when we have consistent elevated inflammation in our body. It’s becoming increasingly more common with today’s diet and lifestyle and is known to contribute to almost every

chronic disease including heart disease and cancer. Higher Omega 3 intake has been shown to reduce inflammation.

JOINT HEALTH

Osteoporosis and arthritis are common complaints that effect our skeletal system, particularly as we age, making us less mobile and causing joint pain. Omega 3 has been shown to increase bone strength and reduce pain and swelling/inflammation of the joints.

WEIGHT MANAGEMENT

We all notice the extra pounds creep up on us as we get older but Omega 3 may help you fight off the expanding waistline. Studies have shown that fish oil in particular can assist in weight loss.

GUT HEALTH

A recent study has shown that Omega 3 can help create a more diverse gut microbiome, which is associated with many health benefits, in particularly lowering the risk of many age associated conditions such as diabetes, obesity and gut diseases. So make sure that you live better for longer, by introducing more Omega 3 in your diet.

Sit the dish in a roasting tin and pour in boiling water so it comes halfway up the sides of the dish. Bake for 40–45 minutes until the sponge top is dark and just set and a lemon custard has formed beneath. Dust lightly with icing sugar and serve warm with cream or ice cream.

PAST

TIMES When it comes to technology some of us are about as reluctant to move forward as a dog being dragged to the vets. Sarah Mettrick reveals why she’s got one foot in the past.

Turning into your mother is a scary transition. This is being witnessed not only by my eyes (she glares back at me each morning when I look in the mirror) but my ears too. I now hear her when I’m talking to my daughter. I don’t know whether to hug my daughter and apologise or hug my mum for thinking she was so annoying all those years ago. This affliction of subconsciously mimicking her seems to kick in whenever my 12 year old has been playing on her phone for too long. Throughout the recent summer holidays I felt I had to keep organising activities so this wouldn't happen. I even began a sentence with “When I was your age…” When my husband came home I asked him to shoot me. Could someone please explain the point of snapchat streaks to me? Friends on Snapchat contact each other at least

once every 24 hours to keep up the ‘streak’. A good way to keep in touch you may think, except they don't chat they just send a symbol. That’s it, and it must be done every day or they lose them, and that would be catastrophic. Apparently. Is this a thrilling pastime? I got my thrill from riding on a chopper. Now stop that… I’m talking about my fantastic yellow Raleigh Chopper bike. Fresh air, exercise, adventures… you see I’m off again sounding like my mother. But I am a mum and I admit it; she was right! Like my Mum, I thought my childhood was better than my daughter’s. We didn't build stuff on Minecraft we built real dens outside with things you could feel and smell. There were no YouTube clips teaching you how to contour and highlight. We practiced plaiting hair and blobbing bright green eye shadow onto our

Girl’s World. During holidays we watched a programme persuading us to stop watching TV (our only gadget). Why Don’t You? would have their work cut out today! Children are also losing the ability to wait. Instant gratification seems to be the theme. Films, solutions, shopping and music, all in an instant. Yes great on some levels admittedly but at the price of missing out on excitement and anticipation. How exciting was it to go to Blockbusters to choose a video? And it was such a treat when Dad took us shopping; certainly better than sharing five minutes screen time pressing the amazon prime button. Yes the outcome is the same but what about the joy of the process?

"Like my Mum, I thought my childhood was better than my daughter’s" So while I grieve for jumping on elastic, Rent-A-Ghost and my yellow chopper, I will try to be less fearful of moving forward. Maybe it’s just the warm memories and nostalgia that make it difficult. If that’s the case I hope when she’s my age, my daughter is dragging her heels too. I can hear her now talking to her own kids …“When I was your age we actually had to press the buttons.’

We’re all getting older but forget the aches and pains and focus on the gains!

1

Whether a jacket, boots or dare we say trousers, new leather can be very stiff. Well-worn leather has a soft and supple feel and often looks even better than the day you bought it.

2

between women, but typically it grows with age. Amassing experience and knowledge makes us feel more respected, improving our self-esteem. First love might be exciting but remember all the drama? Mature love is all about trust, closeness and security. Now who wouldn’t want some of that!

5

6 7

Self-confidence varies

3 4

Studies show, women in their 50s demonstrate more empathy than their younger counterparts. Seemingly, the more experience we have, the more understanding we are. Here’s one less headache to worry about. Women who suffer with debilitating headaches, may

8 9

notice that once they reach 40, the severity and frequency will reduce. As the years roll by, family time tends to becomes more important, and relationships and bonds – even with your irritating older brother – grow stronger. According to recent studies the big O becomes more frequent as we age. Why? Not only do you know our likes and dislikes, but we feel more confident communicating our desires. Whether it’s your career, cooking or backhand, the amount of time you’ve spent honing your skills over the years, must surely make you an expert in at least one area of your life? She offered you a shoulder to cry on when your first boyfriend dumped you, laughed with you until your mascara ran and is godmother to your children. Life-long friendships just get better!

10

Whether it’s a property, business opportunity, or share portfolio, sound investments are likely to improve with age. Get professional advice and avoid the get-rich-quick schemes.

11 12 13 14 15 16

As we gain integrity in our career, we're able to relax more and achieve a better work/ life balance, without the need to prove our worth to the boss, every minute, of every day! Personal style typically improves as we begin to appreciate what’s flattering and comfortable. Remember, just because it’s ‘on trend’ doesn’t mean you have to wear it! Studies show that our levels of happiness increase as we age, with rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide among women all decreasing. Now that’s something to smile about! Contrary to popular belief, our attention does not decrease with age, meaning you can focus on important things and resist distractions – office gossip, hot bloke in Accounts - that younger women may not be able to ignore. Evidence shows that women 60+ have less sleep disturbances and daytime tiredness. So if you’re a mum in her 40s with young children, good news, only 20 years to go ‘til a good night sleep! Finally we’ve been told that having a husband who helps around the house, makes a woman’s stress levels decrease over the years. OK so we’re making this one up but you can’t blame a girl for trying! THE WRIGHT

STUFF

Robin Wright talks about the current crop of roles which see her move from masterfully manipulative to acrobatically awesome – and they’ve been a long time coming…

LIFE & WORK Some actors burn up bright and fast, nabbing a few good roles before languishing in the Hollywood wasteland, while others maintain a steady pace and consistency throughout a satisfying, but perhaps unremarkable career. But for a lucky few, there is another path which allows an artist to grow and evolve, all the while maintaining a steady income and an almost mythological persona. Robin Wright is one such star who bloomed early on in 1987’s beloved fantasy romp The Princess Bride, won hearts during the nineties as troubled paramour Jenny in Forrest Gump, and is now enjoying even more success as the formidable Claire Underwood in House of Cards, along with a couple of blockbuster belters (Wonder Woman and Blade Runner 2949) thrown in for good measure. The 51-year-old was, and remains, fearless, stunning and gravity defying. Exuding a newfound confidence, Wright is not only enjoying the glory, but also relishing the opportunity to embrace challenging and interesting roles. “Characters like Claire Underwood or General Antiope (in Wonder Woman) are iconic figures. They have their own moral codes and bring a powerful message regarding their respective ambitions and their mission in life,” says Wright proudly. I spent a long time playing the angry or disappointed wife, or broken women. Today I can only say how grateful I am for the opportunity to play very different kinds of woman who are empowering and inspiring. Ten years ago, women my age very rarely had those possibilities.” And to celebrate her newfound status as one of Hollywood’s most desirable leading ladies, Wright is taking on more daring screen roles than ever. In Wonder Woman, she demonstrated an athletic prowess that surprised audiences who are accustomed to seeing her cast in more standard dramatic fare. And this month, she plays a formidable police commander in Blade Runner 2049, the sequel to Ridley Scott's 1982 sci-fi masterpiece. But television dramas and bluescreen epics are two very different animals, and surely took some level of adjustment when filming?

"It's an interesting challenge," Wright says with a knowing smile. "I've been part of this world for over 30 years and I still love it, but I'm looking for more out of the process today. I only want to work with creative and innovative people. I love these films where women get to be just as brave and strong as men. That's where we need to be and where we should be."

I love these films where women get to be just as brave and strong as men. Alongside changing the cinematic landscape over those three decades, Wright has also managed to raise a family: actress daughter Dylan, 26, and son Hopper, 24, whom she shares with ex-husband Sean Penn. Having devoted years of her life to her brood, Wright admits that it wasn’t a straightforward transition back to being a full-blown film star. “When you're married and looking after two children your life is very busy and you're not necessarily thinking about your own needs as much. As a mother, I felt an obligation to make the lives of two small children as beautiful as possible and that's where my focus was and I don't regret any of that,” she explains. “But the difference is that once your children have left home you have all this time to look after yourself and your own needs. So you begin a process of selfreflection and it kind of awakens you, and you begin to find yourself. I feel like I've been on that path for several years now and I've finally arrived.” Wright’s emancipation from motherhood couldn’t have come at a better time, as decent scripts and big budgets shifted from film to television, taking some of cinema’s brightest stars with them. Part of this revolution of course was down to subscription services like Netflix, which gave shows that might not have been overnight sensations, a complex, political drama like House of Cards for example, a platform to slowly find their audience and thrive.

“The industry has changed a lot,” she muses. “For the past several years the medium-sized budget films just aren't getting made anymore. That's why you're seeing a migration to TV because some of the best work is being done there and there's a lot of money to be made.” But unfortunately, this money is not always fairly distributed, and earlier this year, Wright publicly scolded Netflix for having misled her about not being given equal pay with House of Cards co-star Kevin Spacey (he is being paid $80,000 more per episode). Normally she shies away from controversy, but now she's willing to fight not just for her own sake but also for all women in the film and television industry, and that includes the development of better roles for women. “It's the kind of conventional thinking and reinforcement of stereotypes that have existed for centuries. Women need to achieve gender equality in all areas of society. If we can succeed in re-educating society and changing attitudes, especially with younger people, then we're going to see deeper changes taking hold,” she says. It’s hard to imagine a formidable woman such as Wright ever being a wallflower, but she is upfront about being shy and insecure as a child, and it is through her work that she has discovered her inner extrovert. And whether knocking heads together in the White House, firing arrows at enemies in Wonder Woman, or simply maintaining law and order in the future, she has certainly come a long way from playing the swooning sweetheart in The Princess Bride. And now as she begins a new phase of her career as a director, having overseen several episodes of House of Cards as well as a short film documentary, The Dark of Night, which she premiered at Cannes, there is evidence to suggest Wright may surprise us even further. “Many years ago, I would turn down roles because I was afraid and didn't feel that I could take up the challenge,” she says ponderously, before adding, “now I feel ready to take on anything.” URBAN FOX OCTOBER 2017 35

HOMES & GARDENS

Combine the opulent with the unexpected to create a home that’s curiously unique. We asked high street favourite John Lewis for their tips on how to get the look.

Collector's

HOUSE STYLE

Choose a base palette of muted colours like charcoal, navy and plum, and offset with an array of luxe materials and decorative touches. Don’t be restricted by style or season, this look crosses design boundaries and enables ornaments and statement pieces from different eras to shine.

FURNISHINGS

Sofas and armchairs should evoke classic tailoring but with a contemporary twist. Think luxe fabrics and rich jewel tones, layered with richly patterned cushions. Balance darkstained woods with hints of metallic, providing the perfect backdrop for an eclectic mix of ornaments.

WALLS

Now you’ve established your base palette, give some thought to how to adorn your walls. An intricate mural will add an element of drama, or curate your own bespoke picture wall, featuring prints of famous artworks, old favourites and new discoveries.

LIGHTING

Lighting provides not only the chance to shine a spotlight on your feature pieces, but also to become a focal point in itself. A floor lamp can create a stylishly modern look, while a cascading chandelier offers a stunning centrepiece for any ceiling.

ACCESSORIES

Opt for a mix of materials and finishes, incorporating glass, metal and ceramic to provide a tactile quality as well as aesthetic interest. Quirky pieces sit in beautiful contrast alongside contemporary items, seamlessly mixing traditional with modern. URBAN FOX OCTOBER 2017 41

PERIOD

LIVING What is it that draws so many of us to period properties? We asked Sam McDonald of Fothergill Wyatt, which features we should be looking out for.

The perfect home is a blend of many things and increasingly people are looking for individuality; properties with period features sitting seamlessly alongside all the attributes of modern living. Those features which reflect the age and style of the property are key selling points, and what makes the property stand out against more modern homes.

Design & Details

Both the Victorians and Edwardians liked to build grand properties with exposed stonework, feature archways, decorative timber barge boards and full height bay sash windows. These characteristics instantly make them stand out to those seeking a period property. Once through the large and usually elegant entrance door, you will traditionally find high ceilings, generous rooms and return staircases offering the instant ‘wow’ factor.

Many house buyers will also look for decorative detailing such as original open cast-iron fire places with elaborate and ornate mantles; picture rails, decorative coving, a ceiling rose and ogee skirting boards. Do check that any ‘period’ features are exactly that. You don’t want to pay through the nose for a property with what you assume are original plaster ceiling roses, to discover they’re polystyrene imitations. It’s also worth opening sash windows to ensure they operate correctly and have no signs of decay.

Restore & Rejuvenate

While it’s great to have these features already within situ, often they’ve deteriorated or have been removed by a previous owner. However it is possible to bring these properties, and their original features, back to life. It might take a little creative flair to see beyond the ‘tiredness’ of some of these original features, but for those who can, they’ll reap the financial rewards in terms of resale further down the line, and also the more immediate pleasure of enjoying a stylish, bespoke living space. Research local craftsmen that specialise in restoring original features such

as handmade timber sash windows, reclaimed tubular radiators and reconditioned cast iron fireplaces; or check out high street retailers who now supply modern equivalents, making period living accessible for every budget. Interestingly, I’ve also come across these period features being installed in properties built in the 1970s, so don’t be afraid to cross boundaries and mix design characteristics from different eras.

Considerations & Consents Before you get carried away with the style and individuality of a period home, remember older properties are sometimes listed, or can be located in conservation areas. A listed building is protected both inside and out and the land around it can be covered in the listing too, so be aware that any alterations may be restricted. If the house you’re interested in is listed, also speak to the conservation officer to find out what will and won’t be allowed via the planning process when you apply for listed building consent. Finally if you’re in any doubt of the health of an older property, commission a local chartered surveyor to inspect the property and give you an overview of any problems that will need addressing. The money you would spend on a Building Survey could pale into insignificance compared to the cost of repairing unforeseen problems. URBAN FOX OCTOBER 2017 49

Splendours of the Subcontinent

Lady Windermere's Fan

Some of the finest Indian treasures are on display in a new Royal Collection Trust exhibition that tells the story of the grand tour of the Subcontinent made by the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) at the end of the 19th century. In October 1875, the Prince of Wales set off on a four-month tour, visiting India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Nepal. Travelling nearly 7,600 miles by land and 2,300 miles by sea, he met over 90 rulers of the different regions he visited. The exhibition tells the story of the tour through watercolours, photographs and 74 exquisite works of art that were presented to the Prince as part of the traditional exchange of gifts.

When a mysterious new beauty enters high society, the in-crowd are sent scattering out, bent backwards and flattened low to find out exactly who they’re dealing with. Oscar Wilde’s raucous social comedy pulls apart the intricacies of etiquette and flips expectation rump-over-head in this scathingly funny satire. Exploiting themes of stereotype, superficiality and sacrifice, Theatrical Niche tour this high-speed adaptation across the Regions & London in Autumn 2017, using signature touches of Commedia Dell’Arte and exaggerated choreography. Suitable for 12 years +

Things I Know To Be True Tue 10 - Sat 14 Oct Curve Theatre

As beautifully touching as it is funny and bold, Things I Know To Be True tells the story of a family and marriage through the eyes of four grown siblings struggling to define themselves beyond their parents’ love and expectations. But the changing seasons bring home some shattering truths. Featuring Frantic Assembly’s celebrated physicality, Things I Know To Be True is a complex and intense study of the mechanics of a family that is both poetic and brutally frank. Age guidance 14+ contains strong language. URBAN FOX OCTOBER 2017 57

Blood Brothers Mon 16 - Sat 21 Oct De Montfort Hall Tickets from £19 demontforthall.co.uk

Written by Willy Russell, the legendary Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences. Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi-award winning Blood Brothers. Bill Kenwright’s production surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone. It has been affectionately christened the ‘Standing Ovation Musical’, as inevitably brings the audience to its feet. The superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True.

Squirrels

Fri 20 – Sat 21 Oct Harborough Theatre Tickets £10 harboroughtheatre.com

Squirrels by David Mamet, is a comedy about Arthur, a middle-aged, egotistical hack writer, who has been working on the opening line of a story involving a man’s encounter with a squirrel for fifteen years, and Edmond, the young fledgling writer he has hired as a secretary/collaborator. They soon discover that Arthur’s flamboyant redundancy clashes with Edmond’s mediocre melodramatic style, as they each develop increasingly ridiculous scenarios for the story. They are joined by Arthur’s cleaning lady, also an aspiring writer, whose suggestions seem to be the most promising, but they too eventually bog down in banality.

Follow Alice down the rabbit hole in Christopher Wheeldon’s exuberant ballet, inspired by Lewis Carroll’s much-loved

book. At a garden party on a sunny afternoon, Alice is surprised to see her parents' friend Lewis Carroll transform into a white rabbit. When she follows him down a rabbithole events become curiouser and curiouser. Alice encounters a cast of extraordinary characters, from a playing card corps de ballet, a sinuous caterpillar and a tap-dancing Mad Hatter. But the ballet does not avoid the darker undercurrents of Lewis Carroll’s story: a nightmarish kitchen, an eerily disembodied Cheshire Cat and the unhinged tea party are all here in vivid detail. The delicious result shows The Royal Ballet at its best, bringing together world-class dance with enchanting family entertainment. Part of the 'Live Cinema' Season.

Playhouse Creatures Mon 23 - Sat 28 Oct The Little Theatre Tickets from £15 thelittletheatre.net

The theatre is derelict, haunted and still echoing in the days of the early Restoration period, around 1670. The smell in the theatre is unique and the atmosphere resonates with all the emotion that it has experienced. Something of Nell Gwyn and the others has not yet left. Playhouse Creatures uses the real life characters of English history, Nell Gwyn, Mrs. Betterton, Mrs Marshall and Mrs Farley. Actresses who were pioneers of theatre. This play shows the way that they strove for status as artists equal to that of their male counterparts during the reign of King Charles II. Some descriptive language and some subtle nudity.

film REVIEW

The Death of Stalin (15) 1 hr 46 mins Opens nationwide Fri 20 Oct 0116 242 2800 | phoenix.org

From Armando Iannucci, this hilarious satire finds comedy in the darkest places, depicting the frenzied political manoeuvres that immediately followed the death of Joseph Stalin in 1953. Adapted from Fabien Nury’s graphic novel of the same name, the film follows a host of Stalin’s underlings as they vie for power. With things get increasingly underhand, will any of them survive long enough to fill the vacuum left by the dictator’s demise?

book REVIEW

From home grown to home design, love the simple life

hits like a gut-punch ers the jet-black humour oth at d an , ny fun d At times laugh out lou

The death of a despotic leader who ran a totalitarian state is not exactly fertile ground for comedy, but Iannucci manages to transplant the acerbic farce and pricked pomposity of his TV shows Alan Partridge, The Thick of It and Veep to the world of doublespeak and secret police with brilliantly funny results. This is thanks in no small part to the incredible ensemble cast. A who’s who of sublime comedy/ character actors including Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire) as the ambitious Khrushchev, Jeffrey Tambor (Transparent,

Arrested Development) as Georgy Malenkov, British theatre royalty Simon Russell Beale on terrific form as ruthless spy chief Beria, and the welcome return of Monty-Python Michael Palin to cinema. When Jason Isaacs turns up as a supremely cocky military officer with an incongruous Yorkshire brogue (none of the cast were made to speak with cod-Russian accents) it’s likely to bring the house down. At times laugh out loud funny, and at others the jet-black humour hits like a gut-punch, The Death of Stalin is a dark delight.

PEOPLE & PLACES

VINTAGE

VACATIONS It’s full steam ahead, as travel writer Kirsty France adds a sprinkle of vintage glamour to high days and holidays. When it comes to holidays, turning back time doesn’t have to mean reliving your childhood. There are loads of ways to treat yourself to a fabulous break that captures a bygone era without the need to camp, go crabbing or eat candy floss…did I really use to like that stuff! Of course, there’s nothing wrong with revisiting old haunts. I have young children and love a day on the beach with a bucket and spade. But I still long for the sort of trip that will take me back to a forgotten age of glamour.

Old fashioned service

For me, nothing says old skool glamour like a proper afternoon tea. I love Coombe Abbey in Warwickshire, which serves a delicious afternoon tea in stunning surroundings. The house was originally a 12th century monastery but was surrendered to Henry VIII. Luckily I managed to avoid the resident ghosts… If you’d prefer something a bit less supernatural try the London Marriott in Grosvenor Square for Low Tea, inspired by 1920s Prohibition and the

Boston Tea Party. You can stick to loose leaf tea if you like, but personally I think it’s worth adding a cocktail or a cheeky bottle of champagne.

Retro hotels

I’ve stayed in a few retro hotels and the Dream Inn in Santa Cruz, California, is my favourite. You feel as if you’ve just walked off the beach and into the 1950s. I’m also going to be adding the Beverly Hills Hotel to my wish list. It played host to the Rat Pack, along with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton back in the 50s. If your budget doesn’t quite stretch to California, don’t worry. There are loads of fantastic retro hotels in the UK, from the Pelirocco in Brighton to the Hard Days Night Hotel in Liverpool’s “Beatles Quarter”. You could also do a lot worse than searching on the Landmark Trust’s website for your chance to stay in a castle. If you're travelling with young children, ‘Child Friendly Escapes’ also have a great range of places to stay across the UK and France, including a child friendly castle on the Ayrshire coast in Scotland. You can brave a windswept beach then warm up in front of a log burning stove.

Hit the road

I’ve had a few great caravan holidays so I’m very tempted by a stay in a vintage Airstream. These gorgeous silver caravans originated in America but they’re now being imported to the UK. So far I’ve spotted sites in the Peak District, Suffolk and on the Isle of Wight. They’re heated so great for snuggling up in the chillier months. If you’d prefer to be on the move, hire a classic VW camper and take to the road.

Great train journeys

I’m an Agatha Christie fan so find steam trains particularly glamorous. The fact that so many murder mysteries have been set on trains somehow only adds to the excitement. Of course, that may just be one of my little quirks… A trip on the Orient Express is high on my bucket list but I suspect I’m going to need to save up for a bit longer. For now I’ve got my eye on a trip to Scotland on the Caledonian Sleeper. I love the idea of getting tucked up in my own cabin and waking up in Glasgow, Edinburgh or even the Highlands.

“Our food is straightforward and unfussy, allowing the After 9 years with the engineering flavours to shine through”, company, a role came up at De University as Faculty says Cheryl Burrell, owner Montfort Marketing Manager and I decided it of Crab & Cow. was time to broaden my marketing I was born in Leicester and grew up in a very loving family. I attended Heatherbrook Primary and later Babington College. Although I liked my early learning years, I hated secondary school. So I escaped schoolwork and the dread of Monday mornings (while earning a bit of money) by working weekends at the Johnscliffe Hotel in Newton Linford. I loved it there, so when I finally left school I decided to go to college to study Hotel & Catering Management.

experience. I managed a team of 8 people, responsible for student applications and enrolments. I enjoyed the role but after having my sons, Archie and Charlie, I found the pressures of a demanding job, coupled with having the boys in full-time childcare, a lot to manage. So when they were 3 and 1, I gave up work to be at home with them.

After college I worked front of house for a number of large hotels, and was responsible for looking after the needs and requirements of the guests. But I was 18 years old and my friends were out partying while I was working shifts; so it wasn’t long before I was looking for more sociable hours outside the hotel industry.

My husband Nathan grew up in Leire and the White Horse had been his local for years. When it shut down, Nathan who was looking for a new business opportunity, suggested we bought it. In 2015 Crab & Cow opened its doors. I like to think our food is straightforward and unfussy, allowing the flavours to shine through in everything we serve. Essentially the very best that land and sea has to offer.

I got a job with an engineering company in their internal sales department and later was promoted to a position in the marketing department, as marketing coordinator. There I was given the chance to study for a marketing degree at Loughborough University and I seized the opportunity with both hands.

As one of the owners, I predominantly oversee the operations, manage the business marketing and of course keep our head chef Liam in line…only joking! I love my meetings with Liam, the opportunity to discuss the latest menus, oh and the wine tasting is pretty good too!

We have loved building up the business and are incredibly lucky to have a fabulous management team handling the day-to-day running of the restaurant. Some weeks are busier than others but when I’m not needed in the restaurant, being able to work from my phone is a real bonus. It also allows me to do my other job…“Mum’s Taxi”.
