At 73, Rhodes has never been one to shy away from bold prints and iconic patterns. Rewind half a century to the late 1960s and a youthful Zandra’s vibrant designs were considered a little left-field. GET UP AND

As a busy Mum, a comprehensive skincare regime can be at the bottom of your priority list, somewhere between taking the kids to school, walking the dog and getting dinner on the table. However, as age and stress can take a toll on our skin’s health, prematurely ageing us, we asked Dermacare’s Kate Farrier for her advice on how to achieve maxiMUM impact with miniMUM effort “Don’t invest in a cabinet full of High Street products” says Kate. “With skincare less is more, so ensure you have the right products that will make a difference. Look for products with a scientific basis – search for the word ‘cosmeceutical’ which refers to cosmetic products with biologically active ingredients. These products will make a difference to your skin instead of just masking a problem, saving you time and money in the long run.”

Kate’s top 6 hassle-free tips for healthy radiant skin are:

1

o use sunscreen – the single most important thing you D can do for your skin is to wear a good quality sunscreen every day. Go for a high factor for your face, like a SPF 30, and ensure that it filters UVA and UVB rays.

2

o drink water – and lots of it! Water ensures the skin D retains optimal moisture and volume, helping to keep it supple and preventing premature ageing. You should aim to drink 6-8 glasses of water a day. I know when I haven’t drank much water in a day, my forehead has wrinkles.

3

o exfoliate – as we age, our skin rejuvenates more slowly. D By exfoliating we get rid of dead skin cells that dull the complexion. A decent exfoliant will reveal new skin cells that have yet to be exposed to the elements, evening skin tone and brightening your complexion.

4

o use an antioxidant – antioxidant is a scary word but acD tually the most common one is vitamin C. Using a product containing vitamin C can help to promote skin rejuvenation by reversing free radical damage caused by the sun and natural ageing.

5

o use Mineral make-up – this isn’t a craze, it is genuinely D better for your skin. Unlike conventional make-up, it doesn’t contain the chemicals that can irritate the skin and clog pores.

6

o have a monthly in-salon treatment – instead of D spending extra hours on your at home skincare, save up your time and money for a monthly salon treatment. The powerful products and treatments, applied by an expert can produce results that aren’t possible through homecare alone. And it’s also an excuse for an hour of ‘Me Time’!

Try to do 1 of these workouts 5 days a w eek. Start with 1 set and build up, as your fi tness improves.

Stair Workout Unless you live in a bungalow we all have them, and this can be a great way to get a good workout, without leaving your home. Warm Up Walk up and down the stairs x 5, getting quicker each time Main Program Run up and down the stairs Run up and down the stairs, using widest

stride to side of stairs Step up 1 step and down Step up 2 steps and down Step up 3 steps and down Jump to 1st step and down Jump to 2nd step and down Jump to 1st step and down 10 x body weight squats 10 x stair press up (lowest step is the hardest)

Pushchair Workout This workout not only keeps you active but gets you and your child outside in the fresh air. This is best done in a park so people don’t think you’re crazy pacing the streets with your pushchair. Warm Up 3 minutes slow walk with your pushchair Main Program 1 minute medium walk 30 seconds fast walk

15-30 seconds jog (depending on fitness) 1 minute medium walk 30 seconds fast walk 15-30 seconds jog

And remember... Keeping active is great for your health and weight management, but if you can also eat healthy, well balanced meals, the benefits will be far greater. Look out for next month’s nutrition rules for balancing and portioning your meals. URBAN FOX MARCH 2015 25

HEALTH & WELLBEING

RIGHT TO

KNOW

Ovarian cancer is the fifth most common female cancer - with more than 7,000 diagnoses and 4,300 deaths – equivalent to one woman every two hours in the UK each year. March is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, so we’ve caught up with research charity Ovarian Cancer Action to find out what every woman needs to know! Almost one in five (17%) women with ovarian cancer carries a BRCA gene mutation. We all have BRCA genes but the likelihood of developing ovarian cancer if you have a mutation in one of these genes increases from 1:52, to 1:2. What are BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes? BRCA1 and BRCA2 are genes that prevent cells from growing and dividing too rapidly. All of us have two copies of these genes. Mutations in these genes can cause cells to become abnormal and grow in an uncontrolled way. Having a mutation in one of these genes can increase a woman’s risk of both breast and ovarian cancer. This can mean that a woman has an 80% chance of developing breast cancer in her lifetime and a 35%-60% chance of developing ovarian cancer in her lifetime. How do I know if I’m at risk? If you have just one relative with ovarian or breast cancer this is likely to have happened by chance and not due to an inherited gene mutation. You may be at a higher risk of developing ovarian cancer if:

Two or more of your relatives who are blood related to each other have had ovarian cancer There have been multiple cases of breast and/or ovarian cancer in your family Ovarian Cancer Action has created an invaluable online BRCA risk assessment test, to help you explore your family history and make an informed decision about whether you should consider being tested for BRCA 1/2 gene mutations. To explore your family history and assess your BRCA risk visit ovarian.org.uk/brca-risk-tool How can I get involved in Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month? Ovarian Cancer Action believes that all women with ovarian cancer have the right to know their BRCA status and is calling for routine BRCA testing for all women with ovarian cancer. To help raise awareness supporters are being asked to get involved by organising a local #WalkInHerName during Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. For more information, or to get involved, visit ovarian.org.uk/fundraising-and-events/ events/walkinhername

BIG S E Y E

Amy Adams is enjoying an idyllic period in her career, with a string of successful movies – The Master, American Hustle, Her – under her belt. Having recently won Best Actress in a Comedy at the Golden Globes for her role in Tim Burton’s Big Eyes, it’s perhaps surprising that the talented actress, nearly turned down the lead in this true-story. When Amy Adams first read the Big Eyes script four years ago, the role of Margaret Keane, a painter who fights to claim her artistic name, struck her as not quite forceful or powerful enough – then came her daughter Aviana and a change of heart. “I realised that when I first read the script I had missed the vulnerability that gave Margaret her strength in the end,” Adams says. “I was looking to play stronger characters at the time but after becoming a mum I’ve matured a lot and it made me see the incredible strength that Margaret had, how in her time, it wasn’t that easy for a woman to seek a divorce, especially from a very powerful and manipulative man like her husband. In the end I was able to see her underlying determination and resilience and that was what drew me to wanting to honour her life and work.” If this turn-around is enough to raise eyebrows, there’s also the fact

that 40-year-old Adams actually considered retiring from acting earlier in her career. “I was very driven and stressed out in my twenties and I needed to change my approach to my life and career,” she says. “Once I got past that and was able to take a healthier outlook on everything, things began falling in place for me. I needed to see my work as a means of expression rather than something where success was a means of validating myself. I learned to separate what I felt about myself from my acting career and that has made me feel much happier and at ease with all aspects of my life.” The past five years have not only seen Adams enjoy critical success, but also become a mother to her daughter Aviana, along with longtime fiancée Darren Le Gallo. These days, “I try to be careful not to take home my characters. Since my daughter has started to understand more things I don’t want to confuse

her too much by coming home and being any different from how mommy usually behaves.” This year’s Big Eyes is no exception. The film recounts the real story of Margaret Keane, the woman behind the celebrated ‘Big Eyes’ paintings of the 50s and 60s, and her increasingly turbulent relationship with her husband Walter (Christopher Waltz). Margaret’s ‘kitsch’ art was sold under Walter’s name - a lie Margaret accepted because he convinced her it would be easier to sell her artwork under a male name. When the couple divorced in 1965, Margaret found the courage to finally assert herself as the real artist – cue a dramatic court case that exposed Walter as a fraud. Keane continues to paint to this day, and Adams befriended her during the shoot. Calling it “an honour” to play Keane, the actress describes her as, “very quiet” with, “an incredible inner strength that I wanted to bring out in the film.”

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

I think that having become a mother and seeing the world differently, has relaxed me in some way and it’s opened me up more.

Adams herself is increasingly recognised for her work, and motherhood has actually helped her address her acting ambitions. “I think that having become a mother and seeing the world differently, has relaxed me in some way and it’s opened me up more. I know that I value my time differently. If I decide to make a film, I know that I have to be fully committed to it because that’s the only way I can justify spending so much time away

from my daughter. I also know that when I’m at home, I’m able to feel so much warmth and love that I don’t worry as much about things anymore.”

a parent.’ It’s true. There will be times when I’m working on a film and maybe my daughter has a cold and I can’t be with her all day as I would like.”

As many mums would attest, it’s all about balance. “It was more difficult figuring that out when she was just a baby, but now I feel the balance is about right. I’m always reminded of some advice I was given when I was pregnant: ‘You can never be perfect as

So what next for this busy working Mum? Adams is currently reprising her role as Lois Lane in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. This sequel to the Amercian superhero movie Man of Steel also starring Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck, is due for release in spring 2016. URBAN FOX MARCH 2015 35

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (PG) 2hrs 2mins Fri 27 Feb - Thu 19 Mar at The Phoenix 0116 242 2800 | phoenix.org.uk

The gang’s back together in this sequel to the tremendously successful The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Four years ago the hotel first opened its doors and now proprietor Sonny is looking to expand. However, with his forthcoming marriage to the love of his life taking up all his time, he looks for help from his newly installed no-nonsense co-manager Muriel (Maggie Smith). Elsewhere, old favourites Evelyn and Douglas (Dench and Nighy) are wondering where their regular lunch dates are leading, and handsome new arrival Guy (Richard Gere) causes a bit of a stir.

breezy affair form it’s a warm and With a fine cast on top

When the original The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel was released in 2012, it was an unlikely hit for studio 20th Century Fox with the film making over $130 million worldwide. Playing to a majority audience of older cinema-goers that were not being catered for, it sparked a run of what became known as ‘grey-pound’ films

including Song for Marion, Quartet and Hope Springs. Much like these movies The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel places an emphasis on escapist entertainment rather than the heavy-going of recent awards fodder, and is all the more fun for it! With a fine cast on top form it’s a warm and breezy affair, even finding time for a joyful dance sequence in beautifully shot Jaipur.

How Not to Murder Your Mother

The Knackered Mother’s Wine Club

Bestselling author of Confessions of a Bad Mother and Confessions of a Failed Grown-Up moves on to the ultimate in tricky relationships: that of mother and daughter. On her fractious relationship with her mother, she remarks: “We have some things in common. For example we both make our scrambled eggs without stirring them and we’ve both dated heroin addicts. But it’s not really enough to get us through a weekend.” In typically candid Calman style she serves up a painfully acute examination of human relationships, softened by the belly laugh of recognition that will seize all who read her.

Do you a) frequently panic in the wine aisle and end up reaching for the same old thing? b) simply pick the bottle with the nicest-looking label? c) automatically pick the second-cheapest wine on the wine list? If you feel it’s time to extend your wine horizons beyond Pinot Grigio, this book will help you make the right wine choice every single time. From throwing a children’s party (because adults need something fizzy too) and finding the perfect red to go with your Sunday roast, to the best wine to drink with chocolate and some unexpected suggestions for your next girls’ night in.

Fancy Flight of

Want a home style that feels eclectic, fanciful and spontaneous? Zoe Hubbard at Maison Interiors, shows us how to have fun, recreating this year’s ‘Whimsical’ trend

Be unpredictable

This look is all about diversity; bringing varying tastes together in a capricious way. Think Mad Hatter’s Tea Party! Whether contemporary, baroque or retro, if done with the correct balance, anything goes! Be inventive with your colours too. The more spectacular the better. Opt for deep jewel colours like olive, indigo & aubergine and clash and contrast for a fabulously quirky look!

Keep it simple

The backdrop to this style should be stripped right back. Industrial brick and concrete walls work well with this style, or alternatively create your blank canvas using grey/indigo chalk paint. If your home is more traditional, panelling will look great on the walls. Again use a chalk paint but stick to lighter hues, as otherwise it’ll be too imposing. Incorporate deeper shades through your furniture, curtains, cushions etc.

Don’t be floored

Hard flooring is well suited for this look, as it is clean and simple. For the industrial style, try a painted concrete floor, and for a more traditional design, you can’t go wrong with wooden parquet flooring. To add warmth and/or texture, choose a reclaimed Persian rug with a bright pop of colour or alternatively a sheep skin or more contemporary patterned rug. You could even select a couple of different rugs for the same room, try different shapes and sizes until you create a look you love.

Dig out some old heirloom s

for instant style.

Mix and match

The key items of furniture, such as your sofas, should be of one era i.e. a retro sofa or traditional chesterfield in a jewel coloured velvet. Then mix with occasional pieces from another era, such as a Baroque ornate reclaimed dresser, chest or mirror. Remember to throw in a few modern items along the way. A Philippe Starck ‘Ghost Chair’ works well with this look!

A fanciful twist

For that true whimsical feel, there must be a few quirky pieces here and there. This is the perfect time to use your family heirlooms or special antiques you may have gathered over the years. Old fashioned crockery not only to drink from but hanging from the wall is exactly the kind of random décor I love to see in a ‘whimsical’ room! If you’re new to this style, have fun collecting unusual and imaginative pieces to get you started

Think natural

The Natural world is an imaginative place and bringing the outside in, is another great way to create a surreal surrounding. Soft furnishings, artwork and eccentric decorative pieces featuring birds, bees, butterflies and trees, are extremely popular right now, so there is no better time to add a touch of wit and whimsy to your home style. Thinking about giving your bathroom a makeover, but not sure where to start? Then tap into the latest crazes with this month’s Trend Watch

1 Freestanding Baths

2

Original St yle

3

Although not strictly new, freestanding baths continue to be a design statement for 2015. They’re a premium investment that ooze style and sophistication. When choosing a freestanding bath, consider how the design of the tub will shape the look of your space.

2 Natural Beauty If you want a bathroom that’s welcoming and serene, then look no further than this year’s natural trend, for inspiration. Introduce earthy materials such as natural stone and wood, to create a warm, calm vibe.

Original Style

4

3 Style Fusion We’re familiar with seeing a fusion of old and new designs elsewhere in the home but now it’s the turn of the bathroom. Here, the ultimate heritage pieces, a roll-top bath and crystal chandelier, are combined with hard-hitting industrial furniture to striking effect.

4 Feature Floor Feature tiles provide a fantastic design opportunity. In smaller bathrooms they add depth without overwhelming the space, and when used in larger bathrooms they create a sense of elegance. We love these ‘Phoenician’ tiles by Original Style.

5 Bathing Zones Predicted to be big over the coming year and beyond, is a move toward bathing zones that are designed in a way that makes them look and feel like an extension of your living space, rather than a traditional bathroom. URBAN FOX MARCH 2015 55

THROUGH THE

KEYHOLE With the cult TV show back on our screens, we couldn’t resist doing a little snooping of our own, around one of Leicestershire’s £1m properties On the renowned Gartree Road and overlooking Leicestershire Golf Course, stands this attractive 1920’s four bedroom detached home with half-acre plot. The 20’s architecture is apparent from the moment you step into the spacious reception hall with its multi panel glazing, dado rail and varnished original oak floor. The stunning flooring continues into the study which features multi-paned crittle windows to the front of the house, ceiling coving and a built-in decorative pilaster bookcase. The matching fireplace surround with marble hearth and inserts to fitted electric fire, add character, making this a warm and inviting place to work. On the opposite side of the reception hall is an open flexible living space, featuring embellished ceiling cornice, decorative radiator covers, as well as a sizeable brick, slip and quarry tiled hearth, and fireplace with oak mantle and fitted gas fire.

From this open plan room, step through an archway and down into the snug; offering a lower level living space, complete with coving and an ornamental fireplace surround with marble hearth, slate inserts and mock coal grate gas fire. The delightful framed kitchen includes shaped chrome handles and decorative drawer pulls, ornate pilaster and corbel framing to a recess, containing a Britannia chrome fitted double oven with induction hob and tiled splashbacks. There is an extensive range of matching kitchen units with pan drawers, cupboards and utensil drawers and a central island with decorative pilasters and a granite work surface. There’s a substantial matching granite work top, plus an additional timber topped work station with storage underneath. Integrated appliances include a Bosch dishwasher, recess for a fitted microwave, integrated fridge and an inset Franker double sink with chrome mixer

tap. From here you can enjoy views over the picturesque rear garden. This stylish kitchen also offers space for a dining table, framed by a dresser unit with display shelving and glazed doors, with the same cornice and corbelling design as the kitchen. An interior door leads to an L-shaped utility room with space and plumbing for an American style fridge freezer. There’s a secondary access door to the rear of the property, plus access to the double garage. Following through from the utility room is a second kitchen, with breakfast bar, work surface, Belfast sink, chrome mixer tap and space and plumbing for a washer dryer, freestanding oven and fridge freezer. A walkway continues to a side door, leading to the Games room. Its floor length arched windows and skylights add brightness to this flexible living space, which also overlooks the pool terrace and garden.

Location: 95 Gartree Road, Oadby

STYLE TIP

Make your home pale but interesting with a neutral colour scheme. Soft hues, such as latte, sage, and grey, create a calming atmosphere, whilst contrasting black with white introduces drama and flair. Go bold with splashes of rich neutrals, such as chocolate brown, or opt for sophisticated and subtle with tone-on-tone white.

Upstairs there is a galleried landing with decorative spindles and a multi-paned arched window, overlooking the front of the house and driveway. From here you can access three bedrooms offering a range of integrated furniture and storage solutions. The Master bedroom is a large L-shape room, featuring an arched corbelled walkway through to a dressing area with fitted sliding wardrobes. From here access the fully tiled en-suite bathroom, containing a large curved glazed shower enclosure with

multi fitting shower, low flush WC, built-in mahogany vanity unit with drawer storage and Gama-Decor his n’ hers bowl wash hand basins. Finally on this floor, is the impressive family bathroom featuring walk-in toilet and shower enclosure, a contemporary multi fitting shower unit with massage settings, tiled walls and chrome inset ceiling spot lights. Grey slate tiled flooring leads to a luxurious inset Jacuzzi bath with wall recessed television. The look is completed with a wall mounted wash hand basin and floating toiletries drawer.

Outside, the property is set behind brick pillared automated wrought iron gates, giving a private and secure approach along the driveway to this delightful home. The front access is encircled by planted boundaries and soft landscaping and at the rear, a series of curved border beds, herbaceous planting and conifers, provide privacy to a number of seating areas contained within this extensive south facing garden. But the pièce de résistance has to be the pool with patio seating area.

PEOPLE & PLACES

Rise of the

Mumpreneur A new trend of resourceful mums, shows you don’t need to be chained to a 9-5 job in order to make a living. Just ask our Editor! “Getting pregnant didn’t come easy for me, so when our IVF treatment was successful, I decided that commuting daily to Whitehall wasn’t an option” explains Martina. “Starting Urban Fox with my husband Steve, enabled me to flex working around being at home with our baby, and now Grace is three, I work during pre-school hours and then when she’s in bed at night. I love my job and the versatility it offers and like all mothers” she laughs “I’ve become somewhat of an expert at juggling!” Want to join the Mumpreneur revolution but stuck for ideas? Here’s just a few to get you thinking…

SHO P Host a Boden party and invite your friends and family to try and buy their new arrivals at discounted prices. You’ll receive commission on sales and for every new customer you introduce to their database, they’ll credit your Boden account with £25. Other options include Stella & Dot and Body Shop, or if you want to go retro, Avon and Tupperware are still both going strong.

DE S IGN If you’re creative then crafting continues to be a huge trend. Whether card-making, knitting, sculpting or jewellery design, this is something you can do when the kids are at school and then sell your creations through a local rural centre, craft fairs or online via Etsy.com. Alternatively if you have a flair for soft furnishing and colour schemes, try your hand at interior design.

BLO G Love writing and think you have enough material to sustain a business? Then start a blog. Once you have a certain number of followers, you can sell advertising space, and if it goes viral you could be in the money. Check out BritMums co-founders Susanna Scott and Jennifer Howze who’ve created the UK’s largest parenting blogging space.

TU TO R Examination time is nearly upon us, so if you’re qualified or even knowledgeable (there are no standard qualifications for private tutors in the UK) in a sought-after subject, you could turn your hand to tutoring. Sixth formers often have free periods during school hours and if you don’t want to stray too far from home, you could even hold the session via Skype.

S EL L Become an online trader. Start by selling things you no longer want and need on sites such as Ebay and then if you have a talent for it, consider expanding to items in which you have an interest, such as china teapots or rare books. Keeping your activity online and not tripping off to antique fairs up and down the country, means you’ll always be available to pick the kids up from school.

CON S U LT

If you reached a senior position in a field such as marketing or finance, before having children, print up some business cards and get the word out that you are available for hire. You can either advise clients over the phone or face-to-face during school hours. Depending on your professional experience and appeal, substantial hourly or daily rates could be achieved.

Rachel Hargrave Entrepreneur Rachel Hargrave talks to us about success, failure and climbing Everest! Born and brought up in Loughborough, I left school at seventeen to follow a career in estate agency but after being made redundant, I found myself employed in a number of poorly paid jobs. My Mum pointed out that my lack of qualifications probably wasn’t helping, so I took her advice and enrolled at Burleigh and Loughborough College to study for my A/AS Levels. Armed with new qualifications, I became a secretary at an events company and worked my way up. I trained as a video editor, which I loved; and later moved into mainstream events. It was a bigger part of the business and offered me more opportunities, running everything from a boardroom away week for BP, through to a three country oil pipeline opening, involving several Presidents and a lot of security! Then when I was 28, the boss at the agency I was working for, told me I wouldn’t go any further because I didn’t look the part! This was the catalyst for setting up my own agency, and now I specialise in PR. Ultimately I write and tell stories. That goes across video, events, internal communications and public relations. I love telling stories and changing attitudes and PR fulfils that for me right now. 2014 was a defining year, as my business went under. It was heart-breaking but also hugely liberating. I remember a friend congratulating me for becoming a complete failure and saying “now you will really fly”. At the time I wanted to slap him but almost a year on – I’ve now set up a new agency - I can see exactly what he means. To someone in a similar situation I’d say “Mourn, pick yourself up and create what you want to be doing not what you think you should be doing. Smile. You’re on your way!”

Kilimanjaro

I love a challenge What you love about Lei cestershire and last year The countryside embarked on the 7 Most inspirational woma Summit Challenge. n Maya Angelou I climbed Kilimanjaro in What relaxes you 2014; this year it’s Chil ing, socialising and sleeping Elbrus in August and Aconcagua in December, and then Denali, Carstanz Pyramid and Vinson between 2016 and 2018; before finishing with Everest in 2019. I plan to raise £250,000 via the Leicestershire and Rutland Community Foundation. The fund will be called ‘The Hope Trust’ - after one of my rescue dogs, Hope - and will support those charities who proactively work with those looking to turn their lives around. Leicestershire is in the top 5 counties for wealth, so I was amazed to discover that we have over 26,000 children and young people living in poverty just in Leicester city alone! So apart from trekking up and down mountains and abseiling off buildings, I also offer pro bono PR services for organisations such as Charity Link, who provide everyday items that the majority of us take for granted, such as a bed to sleep in, a cooker to prepare a hot meal and, in emergencies, food; for local people in poverty, hardship or crisis. If you’d like to join in, you can find more information at charity-link.org What next for me? Climbing those mountains, both physically and figuratively; and one day, I’d love to get a doctorate in maths, philosophy and physics. Watch this space!
