Practically perfect in every way, the bow is the ideal way to accessorise your pony tail. Avoid the cheerleader vibe by wearing it low and keeping the strings of the bow longer than the loop. Opt for classic velvet or alternatively something with pattern and texture. Double up by using it as a choker or as a pussy bow tie for a button-down blouse.

LET'S GET

PHYSICAL Revive your post winter body with a new season workout with Rebecca Watts at The Studios40.

I’m not one for fad diets and quick fixes, as I believe that small habit changing is the only way to build a long-term healthy approach to fitness and health. But sometimes we all need a kickstart to get us motivated. If you’re struggling to get started, my mini body makeover, is a great way to help you see quick results and give you the push to make long term changes. Over the next 2 weeks incorporate HIIT, NEAT, stretching and resistance training into your daily routine and you’ll lose pounds, tone, boost your mental wellbeing and motivate yourself to continue your health and fitness journey.

HIIT

Short periods of high intensity interval training (HIIT) is great for fat burning. Take in the fresh air with hill sprints at the park or alternatively use lamp posts to alternate running and walking between. You can even do a HIIT workout at home. 5 Burpees 2 Return Stair Runs (up and down x2) 5 Mountain Climbers (each leg) Rest for 30 seconds Repeat up to 10 times

Beginners may want to take longer than 30 seconds rest to recover and build up to 10 repetitions.

NEAT

Going to the gym or taking a weekly exercise class is great, but the key to any health and fitness plan is to increase all your activity. Nonexercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT) is the energy expended for everything we do that is not sleeping, eating or sports-like exercise. You can burn anything up to 1000 calories a day just by being more active. So, walk to speak with colleagues rather than using the phone, work standing up, get off the bus a stop early or take a 20 minute walk every lunchtime. The more activity you do, the more calories you’ll burn.

Stretching

Stretching is not only good for helping with tight muscles, it can also help with posture and confidence. Stretch your shoulders and chest first thing in the morning to give yourself the best chance of good posture the rest of the day. It's also important to have a mid-day stretch at work, to minimise the effects of sitting all day. Try a Seated

Spinal Rotation. Cross your arms over your chest, grab your shoulders, rotate your upper body from the waist, turning gently from left to right as far as you can. You should feel a tension on both side of your lower back as it stretches out.

Resistance

Resistance training is the best way to change our body composition. It can tone the flabby bits and improve our metabolism, helping to burn more fat during and after exercise. Get a personal trainer, join a kettlebell or body pump class, or for those that are new to exercise and struggle with time, try my 2-week squat challenge. Starting with 50 squats on Day 1, build up by adding 15 squats per day, allowing 3 rest days at spaced intervals. By Day 14 you’ll have built up to 200 squats. Finally, throw in plenty of water to help beat the bloat and boost the brain and skin; cut out alcohol and processed foods and you could double the effects of this 2-week makeover.

Good luck! URBAN FOX APRIL 2019 19

HEALTH & WELLBEING

THE SWEET

STUFF We Brits eat too much sugar. 700g of the sweet stuff a week in fact. That’s an average of 140 teaspoons per person. We know! So we've been investigating the hidden sugars in food and ways to help end our bitter sweet addiction.

First off, it’s worth remembering that not all sugar is bad. Despite the fashionable war on carbs, we don’t need to worry too much about unrefined sugars naturally present in fruit, brown rice and whole wheat pasta. So dig in. The sugars we need to avoid have usually been refined in some way and are known as ‘free’ sugars. They include sugars added to food or drinks, as well as sugars found naturally in unsweetened fruit juices, syrup and even honey, which is refined by bees (could they be plotting against us?) Current government guidelines recommend that free sugars shouldn't make up more than 5% of our daily

calories. That's a maximum of 30g or just seven sugar cubes a day for adults and just 19g for children. Experts say that as well as reducing the risk of heart disease, diabetes and obesity, eating less of these sugars will decrease tooth decay and delay the signs of ageing. We’re in!

Hidden Sugars

You already know that many foods and drinks with added sugar are high in calories but contain relatively few nutrients. So, cutting down on chocolate, sweets, biscuits, cakes and sugar in hot drinks is a good place to start. But much of the sugar we consume is hidden and you won’t always see sugar listed in a product’s ingredients. Look out for other chemical words for sugar including sucrose, glucose, fructose, dextrose, maltose, in fact almost any ingredient ending in ose, as well as the yummy sounding hydrolysed starch!

Food For Thought

The food traffic light system has not yet been universally adopted, so get to know your food labels. If a product’s total sugar content is less than 5g per 100g it’s virtuously low in sugar, more than 22.5g per 100g, it’s high and to be treated with caution. Some offenders are more obvious than others:

• A daily bowl of breakfast cereal can add up to 70g of sugar a week. • 150g of readymade pasta sauce can contain as much as 3 tsps of sugar. • Dried fruit is high in sugar and sticks to your teeth which can cause decay. • A 500ml bottle of cola contains the equivalent of 17 cubes of sugar.

Simple Swaps

Reducing sugar in your diet needn’t be drastic. Here are some ideas to get you started: • Switch sugary breakfast cereals for plain porridge, Weetabix or Shredded Wheat. • Make your own soups and sauces or choose low sugar, readymade alternatives. • Replace sugary snacks with fresh fruit, unsalted nuts, rice cakes, oatcakes or plain popcorn. • Try soda water with a splash of fruit juice or sugar-free squash for a fizzy treat. • Swap your glass of wine or sugary cocktail for vodka or gin with diet tonic. • Skip desserts altogether or keep as a treat for the weekend. NATURAL BAKING by Caroline Strothe

OPEN AT 6PM for the Best Early Doors this side of The Seafaring News

Yes, you can have your cake - and eat less sugar too. Described by Jamie Oliver as his “favourite baking book of the year”, we have 5 copies of Natural Baking to give away. The healthy baking recipes for these beautiful cakes cut down on sugar, or cut it out altogether, thanks to the imaginative use of natural ingredients. Written by Carolin Strothe - cook, food stylist, and author of the award-winning blog Frau Herzblut - and her husband Sebastian Keitel, this book explains the benefits of a low-sugar diet and debunks the myth that healthy baking must come with a compromise. Carolin includes a seasonal calendar to help you choose the best ingredients; basic recipes for pantry essentials such as apple sauce and cashew cream; and tips to help you elevate the look of your creations using natural colourings. With low-sugar baking you can cook and enjoy treats in a healthy, guilt-free way.

TO ENTER Simply email your name, address and contact telephone number to competitions@theurban-fox.co.uk inserting ‘Natural Baking’ in the subject bar. Closing date for entries is Tuesday 30 April 2019. Terms & Conditions: The winner will be drawn after the specified closing date. The Editor’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into. The prize is non-transferable and no cash alternative is available. The competition may be withdrawn at any time.

Add the remaining 1 tbsp oil along with the onion and fry for 5 minutes, then add the garlic and fry for 3 more minutes. Stir in the diced tomatoes and cook for a further 2 minutes.

2

Meanwhile, cook the tagliatelle according to pack instructions, then drain.

3

Return the aubergine to the pan, then tip in the lentils. Fill the pouch halfway with water and pour into the pan. Simmer gently until everything is warm, then stir through most of the basil. Serve the ragĂš over the tagliatelle with the remaining basil leaves scattered on top.

PAELLA-STYLE CHICKEN CHIPOLATAS Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 35 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients: 280g jar Cooks’ Ingredients Chargrilled Red Peppers in Sunflower Oil 12 chicken chipolatas 4 garlic cloves, crushed 2 large tomatoes, coarsely grated 1 tsp sweet smoked paprika 250g bomba paella rice 160g pack sliced runner beans 500ml fresh chicken stock 2 rosemary sprigs

1

Drain the peppers, reserving the oil. Heat 1 tbsp of the oil in a large frying pan or shallow casserole dish over a medium-high heat and fry the chicken chipolatas, turning regularly, for 8-10 minutes, until golden all over; lift out of the pan and set aside.

2

Add the garlic, tomatoes and paprika to the pan, season and fry for 2-3 minutes until most of the water from the tomatoes has evaporated. Stir in the rice, drained peppers and the runner beans, then tip in the chicken stock. Bring to a simmer, return the chipolatas to the pan and nestle in the rosemary sprigs.

3

Simmer briskly for 10 minutes, then turn to the lowest heat, cover with a lid (or a sheet of foil) and simmer very gently for 5 minutes until the sausages are cooked through and the rice is tender.

HADDOCK WITH PINK GRAPEFRUIT & SAMPHIRE SALSA Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 30 minutes Serves: 2 Ingredients: 1 medium potato (about 200g), cut into 2cm dice 2 turnips (about 200g), peeled and cut into 2cm dice 1 tbsp olive oil 1 garlic clove, crushed 1 rosemary sprig 1 pink grapefruit 240g skinless boneless haddock fillets 20g unsalted butter 1 shallot, finely diced 90g pack samphire 1 tbsp capers in brine, rinsed

1

Preheat the oven to 220°C, gas mark 7. Toss the diced potato and turnip with ½ tbsp oil, the garlic and rosemary, then season and scatter in a roasting tray. Roast for 25-30 minutes, stirring halfway through.

2

Meanwhile, slice the top and bottom off the grapefruit. Using a sharp knife, slice downwards around the grapefruit, following the curve, to remove the skin and pith. Finally, holding the grapefruit over a bowl to catch any juices, slice between the connective membrane to release the segments. Chop the segments and mix with 3-4 tbsp of the juice.

3

Heat the remaining ½ tbsp oil in a non-stick frying pan over a mediumhigh heat. Season the haddock fillets and fry for 2½ minutes on each side. Set aside on a plate. Add the butter to the pan, then stir in the shallot. Add the samphire and 1 tbsp water and fry, stirring over a medium heat for 3 minutes. Stir in the capers, remove from the heat and carefully stir through the grapefruit and juice.

4

Divide the roasted vegetables between 2 plates, top with the haddock fillets, then spoon over the grapefruit salsa. URBAN FOX APRIL 2019 25

FOOD YOU

Can trust Uncertain political times, means farmers need consumers to support British produced food more than ever, says Oli Lee, NFU County Chairman for Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland. We British farmers are incredibly proud of the work we do. We produce some of the safest and most traceable food in the world whilst maintaining very high welfare standards for livestock. Most major supermarkets have excellent British produced food ranges that are underpinned by rigorous standards, but not all consumers are familiar with what these standards represent. The most common scheme, and the one that sets the benchmark for nearly all food supply chains in the UK, is the ‘Red Tractor’ standard. Red Tractor was established in 2000 and has grown to become the UK’s biggest farm and food standards scheme, covering all of animal welfare, food safety, traceability and environmental protection. They are a small, not for profit company, run by the food industry to ensure food comes from a trustworthy and safe source. Red Tractor standards cover the production of beef, lamb, pork, chicken, dairy, fruit and vegetables and can be identified by the Red Tractor

and Union Jack logo that you’ll see on a huge range of food products in supermarkets. Products bearing the Red Tractor logo represent:

Food you can trust

Red Tractor insist on rigorous production standards from farms to pack. They don’t allow growth hormones or antibiotic residues in your meat. Just good quality food at its seasonal best.

Traceability

Every stage of the journey is checked to confirm the food has been born, grown, prepared and packed in the UK. Their systems ensure that all food can be traced right back to the original British farms.

Animal Welfare

Red Tractor visit every farm and only skilled people are allowed to look after livestock. Their standards mean animals have suitable space, and the right food and water to ensure they’re

healthy and their vets only prescribe medicines when animals are ill.

Care for the countryside

Fertilisers and pesticides are used only when necessary to keep crops healthy and always in a manner that reduces the risk of pollution and impact on wildlife. There are currently over 78,000 Red Tractor farmers in the UK, and they sell their food to one of over 700 companies licensed to use the Red Tractor label on their packaging. Food companies of all sizes, from a family-run salad grower to large dairy processors, use the mark.

"Every stage of the journey is checked to confirm the food has been born, grown prepared and packed in the UK" So next time you’re in the supermarket, consider switching to produce with the Red Tractor logo. From field to basket it’ll feel fantastic, as not only will you be ensuring that British farmers are supported in producing world beating food and maintaining our valuable farmed landscapes, but you will also be investing in safe, traceable and high welfare food. Superstition Superstitions. Long standing traditions or irrational mumbo jumbo? From black cats to broken mirrors, “Superstition ain’t the way”, says Sarah Mettrick. Would you ever walk under a ladder or put an umbrella up inside? Like me, probably not, although you’re not entirely sure why you wouldn't and what would happen if you did. But do we really believe bad things will happen if we do or don’t do certain things? We inherit superstitious beliefs, and few of us are willing to tempt fate. Rationally it’s ridiculous, but dare we listen to reason if the so-called powers that be, have nothing to do with logic? There are various suggestions based on ancient beliefs why these things have come to be (the Romans believed mirrors contained fragments of the soul and black cats were associated with witchcraft in the Middle Ages), however it never occurs to us to question them. We grow up learning these traditions and we accept them. If my children try to cross me on the stairs, I holler like a deranged hag ordering them to reverse immediately. I spill salt and due to never remembering which shoulder to throw it over, I’m chucking it everywhere and end up looking like an extra for the Head & Shoulders advert. As for the new Nike trainers on the table,

are my kids insane? To prevent any impending doom, I sprint across the kitchen quicker than Usain Bolt. But really? Wouldn't it be liberating to be released from these acquired behaviours, which seem bonkers when you give them some thought. Just think, no longer having to salute a lone magpie every ten bloody minutes on a country drive, throwing a party on Friday 13th or not cursing that black moggie that’s just crossed your path. If this isn't enough, we invent our own rituals and then dread something bad will happen if we don't carry them out.

As for the new Nike trainers on the table, are my kids insane? When we moved into our cottage, I was unnerved that it had two staircases, I decided I had to go up to bed using the front staircase. Why? I have absolutely no idea. When I was warm and cosy in bed I would often remember I’d used the back staircase

to get upstairs. I’m not sure what hacked me off more, having to get out of bed and come back up using the front stairs or the fact I was being so ludicrous. Several years later I challenged the curse I’d put upon myself. I stomped up the back stairs with focused intention, got into bed and waited for the apocalypse. Luckily for me and the rest of mankind, only one thing happened…nothing. So, I’m resolved not to be a slave to my superstitions any longer. I’m going to makeover my mindset and prove nothing bad will happen if I walk under a ladder, except maybe giving my window cleaner concussion. Yes, I’m gonna jump on the cracks of pavements, blow raspberries to lonely magpies and erect my umbrella in every room, just you watch me. I’m feeling liberated already. It’s all poppycock and there’s nothing to fear. Anyway, I’m fully protected, I’ve got my lucky pants on, but I might just knock on wood first…

Over GAME

For nearly a decade, Lena Headey has ruled supreme as TV’s undisputed queen of mean: Game of Thrones’ Cersei Lannister. With the smash-hit sensation due to come to a no-doubt nail-biting finale, Headey is once again facing up to life outside of Westeros.

LIFE & WORK

In an age where most screenwriters diligently aim for the grey space between good and evil that offers up anti-heroic protagonists for audiences to tussle emotionally and empathetically with, Game of Thrones’ Cersei Lannister is a breath of altogether sour air. From the first season of the budget-busting fantasy epic to its latest, seventh, and penultimate outing, Cersei has only ever sought to outdo herself in terms of sheer malevolence. It’s a mere wonder, given her long-time association with one of TV history’s most depraved characters, that the star behind the murders, double-crossing and endless scheme-hatching, Lena Headey, has not herself succumbed to the colossal pull of Cersei’s altogether insidious nature. “I think if you're played a very wicked character for this length of time it affects people's perceptions of you even within the industry,” the 45-year-old laughs. “But people who know me think of me as goofy and nerdy and someone who loves to laugh, so it would be nice to show those sides of me too!” Thankfully for Headey, the time has finally come for her to offer fans a glimpse of the light-hearted actor behind the merciless Lannister matriarch. Game of Thrones will soon be drawing to a close with the release of its eighth and final season – and the palpable excitement following every new aspect of its imminent arrival serves only to underline quite how important the show has been in 21st century TV history. “Playing Cersei has changed my life and she's one of the greatest characters you can imagine playing,” Headey says. “There are so many layers to her, and you become swept up in her struggles and everything she's had to face. I see her more

as a woman who's tormented and suffered through a terrible childhood and her adult life is a reflection of that pain and confusion.” Unlike many of her younger costars, Headey already had a foothold in Hollywood prior to Thrones from appearances in modern fairyretelling The Brothers Grimm and Zack Snyder’s 300. That being said, there’s no way of understating the impact her recent TV work has had on her status. “It's like starting a new chapter in your life,” she agrees. “When you work on a show of those scope, people tend to think of you only in those terms and everything else you've done before that tends to be forgotten. I'm quite excited to be moving on with new things and changing people's perceptions.” Thankfully for Headey, the years of her Thrones contract have coincided with some of the biggest changes in the wider entertainment industry. It’s highly plausible that such a multi-faceted and nearly universally despised female character like Cersei would never have made it to our screens in another age of TV, but these days she is but another reflection of a wider desire for fully fleshed out female characters striding to the fore. “I do think the best female roles are being created now,” she nods. “There seems to be great roles for women, and you don't necessarily have to be a young woman. Suddenly, we're realizing that generally women are interesting, and they can also be weird and crazy and mean. There is everything in there to be had.” “I think times are changing,” she continues. “As an actor, the chance to play a character who starts out as this seemingly self-assured and

formidable woman and then sees her world spinning out of her control is a fantastic opportunity. Her broken nature is what makes her so fascinating to explore and I'm sure what makes her interesting to audiences.” Life has changed in other ways for Headey, too. She has had to balance the latter years of Cersei’s rule on-screen with the birth of her second child, daughter Teddy, off it.

People who know me think of me as goofy and nerdy and someone who loves to laugh, so it would be nice to show those sides of me too! “I think of it more as a blessing,” she says. “You focus on your responsibilities as a parent and your love for your child and stop worrying about yourself so much. It's freeing in that respect. You don't ever remember what your life was like before you became a mother because so much changes when you no longer have the luxury of indulging in your anxieties and other issues which just don't seem important or interesting anymore.” The same can be said of Headey’s attitude towards being thrown into free agency come the Thrones finale, with the star already flexing her funny-bone in the Stephen Merchant-directed Fighting With My Family. “I'm much more excited about my work now than ever, mainly because I'm not weighing myself down anymore.”

Weekend

WONDER Freshen up your home this weekend with a spring makeover.

TOUCH UP

Wash down walls with sugar soap solution and smooth out holes and small cracks with quickdry flexible filler. Choose a neutral colour, as brighter colours may need two coats. Touch up missed bits with a small radiator roller.

FABRIC REFRESH

Fabric is fail-safe solution for a room refresh. Put away those heavy winter curtains and hang sheers or voiles instead. Instantly your room is lighter. Buy two or three high-end cushions, then cut costs by filling in the gaps with high street basics.

COVER UP

Hide what can’t be changed. Cover up scuffed walls with artwork, throw a blanket or quilt over tired bedlinen and a fabulously large rug will make a huge difference when it comes to disguising marked wooden floors.

SHOW OFF

Create space by clearing clutter into storage boxes and baskets. Not only will it transform your home but also makes room to showcase the things you love. Try creating a display of your favourite pieces on an occasional table, kitchen unit or window ledge.

OUTDOOR REVIVAL

Prepare to make the most of the coming season by refreshing your outdoor eating area. Remove weeds from patios, wash down or replace tables and chairs, and add atmospheric fairy lights and warm throws, for when the sun goes down. URBAN FOX APRIL 2019 51

PEOPLE & PLACES

Adults ONLY

Is a break without the kids relationship rehab 101 or desertion of your little darlings? Kirsty France explores how to shake up your holiday and your relationship too.

I don’t know about you, but I felt as if Christmas had hardly ended when suddenly it was half term. Don’t get me wrong, I love holidays with my children. Getting to laze around in pyjamas or finding a new, family friendly activity is great. It’s just that I sometimes long for time with my other half. The kind where we can actually have a conversation without interruption or arguing about the washing up. So, this month I’m planning a great escape for two. #NoGuiltAllowed.

Break from the norm

If you always stay in family friendly hotels or holiday cottages you might feel as if you’ve fallen into a bit of a rut. Even if you’d like to travel to somewhere familiar, changing the type of accommodation you choose could give you a whole new outlook. You could try glamping, stay in a log cabin or rent your own historic landmark for a weekend. If you really want to wake up somewhere different, how about a lighthouse or even a converted train

carriage? Your accommodation sets the tone for your break so trying somewhere new could be a breath of fresh air in more ways than one.

Share your interests

Does your partner think spas are too girly? Do you wave him off to the golf course wondering what on earth the attraction is? Why not find out for yourself? Book a weekend where you can both find an activity you love, then go do it together. If you can begin to appreciate the other person’s interests, it helps you to understand each other better.

Sometimes all you really need is a change of scenery. An adult only holiday gives you the opportunity to go somewhere you'd never take the children. Of course, you could try something that’s completely new to both of you. Book a holiday with a range of different activities or just one that you’d both like to learn. However it turns out, it’s a lot better than another night on the sofa.

Explore new horizons

Sometimes all you really need is a change of scenery. An adult only holiday gives you the opportunity to go somewhere you’d never take the children. If you always go to the seaside, try a city break instead. Discover a remote destination where you can enjoy the travel as part of the experience, but the kids would be bored to tears. Equally, there’s nothing to stop you enjoying an old favourite from a different angle. Choosing a place you already love lets you relax immediately. Then you can discover all the activities that wouldn’t be suitable for your children, so you can go home with great memories that are just for you. If a child free holiday isn’t an option, there are still ways to get time together that helps you to refresh your relationship. Book a day off work and go for a day trip somewhere new. Get a sitter for a few hours and head to a shared evening class. If your nights out are usually spent at a quiet restaurant, try a noisy gig! Whatever you do, have fun and let me know how it goes. MY WAY

Jimmy Choo perfume

Joanna Evans

“I’ve become more creative as time has passed and feel more confident in my own style”, says Cake Designer Joanna Evans. I grew up in Reading. I enjoyed school and anything involving arts and crafts. Initially I’d wanted to be a chiropodist, which meant staying on at sixth form to study for a biology qualification. Unfortunately, I failed my exam, so left school to look for a job. I saw an advertisement for an accounting job at a medical firm. I’d been good at maths and probability at school, so applied for it and got the job. It changed my life in more ways than one, as I met my husband Mark while there. When I was 22, Mark’s company relocated and so we moved to the Midlands. I started doing accounting work for Champneys Springs in Ashby and in the evenings explored my creative side with a range of classes including watercolour painting and pottery. I was surprisingly good. But a greater surprise was to come, when I discovered I was six months pregnant with my son! I spent the early years at home with Dominic but went back to work part-time when he started school. I still loved doing my creative classes too. One Christmas, Mark bought me a voucher for a cookery course. The original course was cancelled so I

switched to cake decorating instead. I loved it! It was such a defining moment. I took another couple of courses just to make sure. Even then Mark said, “It’s not going to be another expensive hobby, is it?”. Understandable given the easel and watercolour paints were gathering dust! I decided to go for it and in 2013 launched Lemon Balloon Cakes. I chose the name because lemon is my favourite cake flavour and balloons made me think of celebration. I trundled on happily for three or four years before entering Cake International in 2017. I was delighted to receive a bronze award. The business was getting bigger and I decided that it was time to rebrand. Joanna Evans Cake Design was born, and things have really taken off. I specialise in celebration cakes, particularly weddings. I’ve become more creative as time has passed and feel more confident in my own style. I love creating something that doesn’t look like cake – I recently did a Doc Marten boot! Listening to a couple describing their dream cake is my favourite part of the

work. A lightbulb comes on in my head and I can picture it. The reaction I get when I draw a customer’s dream cake is wonderful. Of course, it makes it rather nerve wracking when I’m driving to deliver a four or five tier cake whilst avoiding every pothole on the way! This year I’m entering Cake International again and I’m also beginning to go into new hotels and venues for some exciting events and collaborations. I love the fact that my business has given me the flexibility to spend more time with my family, especially now that Dominic is at university. Of course, even when I’m not officially working, I’m still thinking about cake! For more details visit or email: www.joannaevanscakedesign.co.uk or jo@joannaevanscakedesign.co.uk
