PERFECT Make-up artist and beauty writer Sheelagh Powell shares her top tips for making sure you look fabulously flawless on your big day It’s really important to keep the skin hydrated. So in the months before, drink plenty of water and use a hydrating facial spray. I love the Nu Skin Moisture Mist; this will rehydrate the skin and can be used to freshen up your makeup on the day. If you’re wearing a strapless dress, take care of your body too! Banish dry skin by scrubbing elbows, knees and heels with an exfoliator such as Clarins Toning Body Polisher with essential oils.

A matte powdered finish will always photograph better than a dewy, luminous finish, so use a mattifying face primer under your makeup, to smooth out fine lines, even skin tone and mattify any areas on the face that are prone to shine. Try Estée Lauder Matte Perfecting Primer which minimises flaws, to create an even canvas. Finish your makeup with a fine dusting of loose translucent powder and finally, use a fixing spray such as Model in a Bottle, to seal your makeup and help it last right through the day.

If you decide to book a professional makeup artist, do your research. Check if they have a website. Their portfolio and testimonials should give you a good idea of their work. Alternatively talk to your friends who are already married for their recommendations. Book a pre-wedding makeup trial and take along tear-out images from magazines of the type of look you’d like. If you don’t like something, say so! It’s crucial to get it right, so that you feel comfortable, relaxed and radiant on your big day!

Getting a lipstick that will stay in place, can be difficult. In the lead up to your wedding, exfoliate lips regularly with a baby toothbrush dipped in Vaseline. Simply brush lightly across the lips to buff away any dry skin. The Vaseline will re-hydrate and add a gorgeous glow to the lips. On the day, consider using a lip primer such as MAC’s Prep & Prime Lip and choose a long-lasting lip colour. I love Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick, enriched with Vitamin E and avocado oil. “IDD Therapy finally relieved my back pain after 25 years...” Non-invasive treatment solves Roy’s ‘slipped’ disc agony Leicester Tigers past president, Roy Jackson suffered with excruciating back pain and leg pain (sciatica) for years but he’s finally back to health thanks to a non-invasive treatment which is being championed by experts in Leicester. “I had spinal surgery more than 25 years ago and since then I’ve suffered with lower back pain and sciatica. The episodes have become more frequent until recently, when the pain was almost constant.” Roy tried many different manual treatments over the years but none gave him any lasting improvement. “You name it I had it: physiotherapy, osteopathy, chiropractic and acupuncture but nothing seemed to work - I still had to take painkillers almost every day to keep going. At 67 I was beginning to think I’d have to suffer like this for the rest of my life…” However, things began to look up when he spoke to Craig Mortimer, Director and Consultant Physiotherapist at The Ashleigh Clinic, Stoneygate.

“I’d known Craig for years because he’d treated many of our players at The Leicester Tigers. He explained that he’d been getting exceptional outcomes for patients like me with a non-invasive treatment called IDD Therapy.” IDD Therapy gently draws apart specific spinal segments where discs are damaged or herniated (bulging), taking pressure off targeted discs and trapped nerves whilst helping to relieve muscle spasm and improve mobility.

“I now look forward to daily activities without the feeling I’ll regret it the very next day” “The treatment was very soothing; I just relaxed on the treatment bed and let the machine do all the work.

More than 21,000 treatments have been carried out in the UK with clinicians reporting a significant improvement in 70-90% of patients. Clinic Director, Craig Mortimer is changing the lives of his patients with IDD Therapy

Simply follow these 10 basic nutrition rules, plus my 12-week exercise plan and you’ll be body beautiful in no time. And you don’t even have to be getting married, start now and this is the perfect Little Black Dress plan for the Christmas season too!

Exercise Plan To really make a difference walk 20-30 minutes a day and introduce resistance exercise and high intensity interval training 2-3 times a week. Those not use to exercise should consult their GP before starting any new routine. You will need a simple resistance band set to undertake the progressive workout below. It’s important to progress the workout as your body will get used to it and results will slow. The resistance band set will have different strength bands, so choose a band that makes it more difficult to complete the exercise, if it gets too easy.

Week 5-8 As above but with progression below Jog on spot x 4 15 reps of upper body Add 10 resistance band shoulder press Add 10 resistance band lat raise Add 10 lunges each leg pre lunge walk Week 9-12 As above with progression below Jog on spot x 5 20 reps of all upper body Increase static squats to 30 secs Increase lunges each leg to 15

Get the W-day shots you deserve with our guide to finding your perfect pro photographer

1

Good wedding photographers are relatively well known. Ask your friends and family for recommendations or even your hairstylist or makeup artist who may have worked with them before.

2

Look on their website. Do you like what you see? Photographers do have different styles so if you don’t get a first good impression then eliminate them from your list.

3

You spend more time with your photographer on the day than anyone else so make sure you get along. Are they friendly, helpful, make you feel relaxed etc. If not they might not be right for you.

4

If you’re feeling nervous about being photographed, and want a feel for the shots you might receive, consider a pre-wedding photo shoot. A little extra money but can eradicate a lot of fears.

5

Ask the right questions including their insurance liability, do you have rights to your images, if you’ll get full coverage of the day, plus details of any add-on costs such as editing.

6

Packages may appear like the best deal but sometimes contain lots of things that you don’t want. Go through the prices and choose only what you want. You can always add additional items later.

7

Ask to see samples of the products you’re interested in, for quality purposes. Wedding albums are not all created equal and you need to know exactly what you’re paying for.

8

All photographers can take a couple of good shots, so ask to see some complete wedding albums, in order to see the full range of photos taken. This will give you a good idea of what to expect.

9

Does your photographer have experience of working in bad weather and what is their Plan B? Have they chosen suitable indoor options or are they going to get creative with a brolly?

10

Consider whether you want natural or reportage shots, more formal group shots or both. If you’re not the shy and retiring type then formal shots probably aren’t for you.

11

Agree your ‘must have’ shots in advance, so they’re not missed in the excitement and enlist the help of a member of the wedding party, to take responsibility for getting the guests together for photos.

12

Strike a balance between capturing memories and spending time with guests. We’ve all been to weddings where we’ve waited for hours, that’s not how you want your day to be remembered.

Fri 3 - Thu 16 Oct at The Phoenix 0116 242 2800 | phoenix.org.uk The new film from David Fincher (The Social Network, Fight Club) is an adaptation of the internationally bestselling 2012 novel of the same name by Gillian Flynn. Ben Affleck stars as Nick Dunne, who on their fifth wedding anniversary reports to the police that his wife Amy (Rosamund Pike) has disappeared. As an intense media spotlight begins to reveal inconsistencies in what Nick describes as a perfect marriage, the suspicious police force and even his close friends begin to wonder, did Nick Dunne kill his wife?

A film that keeps you in suspense until the last, Gone Girl is another riveting example of the recent wave of serious minded American thrillers. Although nowadays more heralded for his directing talent than his acting ability, Ben Affleck turns in one of his best performances in years. His Nick shifts from a put-upon everyman in the harsh glow of the media, to a duplicitous murder suspect whose

dark secrets swim just beneath the surface of his calm exterior. It’s a superb central performance and he is more than matched by an eclectic supporting cast including Kim Dickens, Patrick Fugit, Neil Patrick Harris and Tyler Perry. Expertly crafted by director Fincher and shot in a gorgeous muted palette similar to his 1995 film Seven, Gone Girl is a must for fans of intelligent American fare.

Jeeves and The Wedding Bells

Penguin’s Poems for Weddings

By Sebastian Faulks. Published in paperback by Hutchinson, £7.99

Edited by Laura Barber. Published in hardback by Penguin Classics, £14.99

A gloriously witty novel from Sebastian Faulks using P.G. Wodehouse’s much-loved characters, Jeeves and Wooster, fully authorised by the Wodehouse estate. Bertie Wooster is staying at the stately home of Sir Henry Hackwood in Dorset. He is more than familiar with the country-house set-up: he is a veteran of the cocktail hour and thanks to Jeeves, is never less than immaculately dressed. On this occasion, however, it is Jeeves who is to be seen in the drawing room while Bertie finds himself below stairs - which he doesn’t care for at all. His predicament is, of course, all in the name of love.

This is a wonderful anthology of wedding poems, filled with surprising, curious, unorthodox and charming poems about love and the public commitment to love. For the many thousands of readers who each year go through the complex mix of thrill and trauma that is the planning of a marriage ceremony, Laura Barber’s anthology is the answer to your prayers, with a wonderfully generous and unusual selection of poems suitable for reading out loud and which celebrate and encapsulate how we wish to express our deepest feelings.

of Performing Arts my Russian acting coach told me I was a disgrace to the Moscow Theatre… I was determined to prove him wrong!” she laughs.

The couple met during the filming of Wanderlust, and a coy Aniston says, “It was one of the best times I’ve ever had on a film set.” The two spent a happy three months together in Clarksville, Georgia, by a lake next to a nudist colony… “We absolutely loved it!” Aniston says. “And it lent itself beautifully to the story that we were telling.”

Aniston has racked up a lot of tabloid inches in her years in the spotlight but finally seems to be in a happy place.

Before she hit the jackpot with Friends, Aniston tested the waters in, “a graveyard of sitcoms that thank God no one knows anything about.” She admits she was simply, “happy to get a job every year, whether the series eventually made it on air or not.” But ever since Friends transformed Aniston into America’s TV sweetheart, she’s maintained her standing as Hollywood’s reigning rom-com queen.

or the past three years, Aniston has been living with her Wanderlust co-star Justin Theroux, and the couple cemented the deal with an engagement in 2012. This August, the famous couple enjoyed a romantic break in Bora Bora to mark the two-year anniversary of their engagement. The trip quietened tabloid speculation that the couple were on the rocks and, if anything, Aniston and her beau seemed happier than ever.

“When you’re younger and trying to make your way in life, you’re still dealing with lots of nagging doubts and confusion,” says the actress. “I’m so much happier today and I’ve felt this way for several years now. It took time for me to get to this place but I’m glad I figured how to get here.” When Aniston first started performing, like most actresses, she didn’t hold high expectations. “I just really wanted to work and I wanted to do good work.” That said, Aniston did have one particular ambition: “When I was at a High School

Not only was it the perfect setting for a kindling romance, it was also a movie where Aniston went topless…

Perhaps this is in part down her stabilising relationship and relaxed engagement with Theroux.

“That takes a little bit of nerves,” Aniston admits. “But adrenaline kind of takes you through it!” Besides, for Aniston, acting is acting. “You have the girls come in and cover you up immediately. But I got very comfortable with seeing nude people, pretty much immediately. It was very bizarre. But knowing these were actual nudists right next to where we were filming – made us feel very comfortable.”

“I feel very comfortable and happy. Things feel much easier in my life now and I’m anxious to do more travelling this year and not work as much. He’s a really good man.”

You’d think getting topless wouldn’t be hard for Aniston - after all, she’s known for having one of the best bodies in the business. But as an actress and brideto-be, just how does she stay in shape?

Her twenties may have brought overwhelming success, but having entered her forties, Aniston admits to feeling, “so much happier with how I feel about myself and things in general and about where my life is going.”

“ Things feel

much easier in my life now and I’m anxious to do more travelling this year and not work as much.”

“I’ve never been a fanatic when it comes to what I eat. I’ve always discovered that I can stay fit by avoiding junk foods and eating healthily while running or exercising regularly.” Saying she doesn’t have a secret formula, “I love to do yoga and I feel better and have more energy if I can do one twenty minute workout every day.”

She adds that, “I know if I exercise enough and stay active I can eat what I want and not worry about my weight or how I look.” And if she’s put on a few pounds, Aniston knows how to get back on track. “Well, I just eat more fish and salads for a week and exercise four or five times a week as opposed to two or three times,” she says.

Although she’s keeping schtum about whether she’s even bought a wedding dress yet – please God no crayons - with this regime she’s sure to look utterly amazing. Gorgeous inside and out, we’re really hope Jen’s engagement goes the distance, she deserves to be lucky in love.

FOOD FIG HT

Planning a wedding day menu can be difficult, with everyone from vegetarians, fussy eaters, foodies, children and guests with endless allergies to cater for. But relax, with our fab tips we’ll help you get the best, from your breakfast

A hot new food trend for 2014 was the genuine wedding breakfast Think omelette stations, Bucks Fizz, egg and bacon, pancakes, and Bloody Marys. Where’s our invite!

“Where couples are undecided, we often suggest a trio of starters and/or desserts. They can choose any three items from the wedding breakfast menu and I make mini portions of them.” Fraser McDonald, Head Chef, Hothorpe Hall

Table picnics are becoming more and more popular; not only allowing for a broader choice of food for your guests but also adding some informality to the proceedings.

If your wedding is later in the day, consider a cocktail party approach with drinks and canapés. This exudes sophistication and is also a fantastic way to accommodate dietary requirements. Ditch the 3 course menu in favour of an afternoon tea. This is perfect for a vintage theme wedding and what’s more veggie, gluten-free and other guest-friendly options are easily incorporated.

Don’t be afraid to serve your guests informal dishes. Pie and mash or fish and chips are always firm favourites and when accompanied with a glass of champagne are positively haute cuisine!

Consider a veggie-friendly starter as this reduces the hassle for you and the venue and your vegetarian guests will appreciate the thought.

Make sure that your full menu compliments each course. If you are going to choose a mezze style starter, try to stick along a certain theme of food, such as Lamb Kleftiko for the main course.

“Transform classic recipes for instant guest appeal. GOODBYE Apple pie with custard, HELLO Baked stuffed apples, wrapped in filo pastry, topped with vanilla custard cream ice-cream.” Riccardo Corbinzolu, Head Chef, College Court

DIY

Dos and Don’ts Handling some wedding tasks yourself can be a great way to personalise your day and save money but you need to know when to call in the experts. Here’s our top picks for what to take on and what to leave to the pros

Dos

The Ceremony Décor This is the shortest part of the day, so avoid unnecessary expense by making your own décor. Get creative with petals, chair sashes, garlands, lanterns and candles; and craft your own vintage confetti with some newspaper or your favourite romantic novel and a heart-shaped paper cutter.

The Stationery Speciality save the date, invitations, thank you cards, table plans etc. can put a sizeable dint in the budget. So if you or a friend are arty, head to a local craft store for a DIY kit or print stylish stationery right from your computer.

Don’ts

The Centrepieces A beautiful centrepiece sets the mood of the reception. From sophisticated to fun, your florist can create something that’ll wow your guests. If you want the professional touch without blowing the budget think fresh blooms in vintage vases or even fragrant potted plants.

The Cake Yes it would be much less expensive to do it yourself, but you only have to look at some of the disasters on Bake Off to know that you don’t want to mess with one of the biggest focal points of your wedding. Leave it to the experts, they’ll also know how to transport it without damage.

The Music For a smaller, informal wedding you could consider cutting the cost of a DJ or musicians and creating a personalised playlist for your iPod. On the day, make sure there’s a person whose dedicated responsibility it is to monitor the music, as you’ll be far too busy. The Favours In recent years many brides have dispensed with wedding favours but if you’d like to add a personal touch, consider a retro sweet table, homemade preserves or garden seed bundles. If there’s a charity close to your heart, give guests handwritten cards that say you’ve given in their name. The Photos Your photographs are one of the few tangible things you’ll have to remember your big day. Friends and family might promise to capture every moment, but what happens if they get distracted or have a camera malfunction? If it’s important for you to have high-quality images, then hire a pro. The Catering Catering a large-scale party is a huge task even if you are a great cook. You’ll be hard-pressed to get enough food together and keep it hot. Caterers are trained to make it happen; plus they have the support staff to serve your guests in a timely manner. Style

COUNCIL It would never do for everybody’s tastes to be the same, but if your approach is eclectic and his minimalist, decorating your marital home could become a war zone. Zoe Hubbard from Maison Interiors, explains how to avoid arguments and create a veritable style council

al. . he loves minim f i o d to t a h W

Be open minded

Don’t have your guard up as soon as this process starts. Sometimes it’s good to try something new. If you can’t accept your husband’s taste in its entirety, follow the basic principle that for every ‘No’ there should be a ‘Yes’; for instance ‘No I don’t like that sofa style’ but ‘Yes I do like the fabric’. Then find a new style of sofa which you both can live with in the same fabric.

Make a list

Decisions on staple pieces, such as furniture and flooring should be made together. Make a list of items that require both partner’s approval, that way he (or you) can’t make a major purchase without the other one’s agreement. Once these items are decided upon, you will have inadvertently agreed on a style. This should subsequently make choosing smaller ticket items much easier.

Learn to compromise

Mica

. .but you have an ecle ctic

If you’re both bringing furniture from previous houses into the marital home, you will need to decide what stays and what goes. You might not like your partner’s 50” plasma screen but he may loathe shabby chic, so you will need to find a middle ground that you both can live with E.g. put the television in the snug, rather than in the main lounge and limit your shabby chic passion to the guest bedroom.

Conflict of interest

Have a vision

Have separate rooms

Sometimes it’s difficult to know what your partner’s home interior style is, until you see it. So it’s a great idea to get a Houzz or Pinterest account and create a bank or ‘board’ of images that you and your partner can add to. Keep going and you will eventually see your mutual style and scheme emerging. It’s a lot easier to convince one another of a specific design idea if you can show something similar that has already been created. Photography courtesy of Amitco at Maison Interiors

taste

If it happens that you and your partner are at the opposite ends of the design spectrum e.g. retro and classic, believe it or not, it can still work. The key to successfully pulling this off, is to incorporate just a little of the dominant style for the odd occasional furniture piece and accessories, with the more subtle style used for larger items and areas such as sofas, flooring and walls.

Not as drastic as it sounds! One final way to lessen the conflict, is to make combined decisions on the main areas i.e. the kitchen or living room and then allocate the other areas between you. So one makes the decisions on the bedroom and the other on the home office etc. However be aware that although this can help to prevent arguments, there is a risk that your home will lack continuity of style. HOMES & GARDEN

When

to buy Whether you’re getting married or simply looking to purchase your first home together, we ask Peter Wyatt of local estate agent Fothergill Wyatt, if now is the right time to buy

Commitment Purchasing a property together is a commitment in itself, so it’s essential that both partners feel comfortable with searching for a home. When married the property becomes a marital asset but co-ownership beforehand must also be carefully considered as the relative financial contributions may not be equal. As joint tenants, both parties own the whole of the property, but you might consider ‘Tenants in Common’ whereby each party owns a share. This also presents a useful way for ‘Bank of Mum and Dad’ to offer support in a purchase whilst protecting each party’s input. It is always best to consult a solicitor to confirm exactly how your new home is to be shared and owned.

Criteria Next identify the criteria for your home, the location – including proximity to work, to family and friends and local conveniences - the style (modern or period, apartment or semi-detached), affordability, plus your long term aspirations. You should draw up a wish list of all the key features you want and remember that you will always have to compromise on something. The trick is to identify what you absolutely cannot do without, and what you may or may not pay a premium for.

Choice Then it comes down to choice in the market and how many properties fit your criteria. Following a very busy start first half of the year, we anticipate increased activity in the autumn, with

more choice coming to the market and an increased confidence to move quickly, amongst buyers and sellers alike. If you are purchasing out of rented accommodation and therefore ‘chain free’, you will be appealing to sellers, however, do ensure you fully understand your tenancy notice period, and discuss how long a purchase may take with your agent.

Cost On the mortgage front, increasingly lenders are advertising their eagerness to lend to young couples and families, whilst government backed ‘Home Buy’ schemes for new build and resale properties, offer the opportunity to secure mortgages with 5% deposits. New build homes in particular are popular, not only due to the financial assistance, but also as their contemporary fixtures, fittings and warranties, provide more certainty of maintenance and running costs.

So if you’re looking to buy your first home together, the time couldn’t be better to make the most of the opportunities in the property market.

LIFE & WORK

For Better

or for worse

When getting married, it’s a good idea to make sure you have everything covered for your future life together, says Julie Langton from True Potential Wealth Management When life changes Whether it’s your first, second (or even your third) marriage, it’s worth stopping for a moment to plan for your future. Did you know that when you marry, any gifting between you and your spouse in your lifetime is tax-free? What’s more, any possessions and property left to your spouse will also be tax-free after you die. This means your surviving partner will get a tax-free allowance double the amount for inheritance tax. When it comes to marriage, it’s too easy to get carried away with preparing for your big day without putting some measures in place in case things do go wrong. It doesn’t have to be complicated either – it’s about understanding what you and your partner have and how to safeguard your assets from risk. Preparing for Financial Fallout Invest your savings wisely, keeping money available for the short, medium and long term. Couples don’t have to invest together, you can keep your finances separate. This can be especially relevant in second marriages where a financial foothold may be in place. If you

are happy investing together then review your savings accounts and transfer any savings you have into a spouse’s account if it has a lower tax rate. Nest egg When planning for your future as a couple, check that your Pension provisions will pay out what you expect. The Government recently announced a major overhaul to the pension rules. Starting 1 April 2015, pension funds will be easier to access and are no longer locked away. Most people do not regularly review their pensions. If you are hoping to retire in sunnier climes or take that luxury cruise, make sure you have a nest egg you can rely on.

New life, new cover Having the right level of protection for your wealth and any other assets you own is essential. If you are starting a new life together, make sure you both have the right level of insurance cover in place which suits your situation. As everything you leave to your spouse will be tax-free, it’s a good idea to look into life insurance if you’re not already covered. It’s worth considering how you would manage large financial commitments such as a mortgage if your spouse become ill or unable to work. If you are not sure what protection you have in place, it’s worth seeking professional advice.

When planning for your future as a couple, check that your Pension provisions will pay out what you expect.

Was yours a holiday romance or Heartbreak Hotel? You probably won’t be surprised probably won’t be surprised to hear that January is the busiest month for divorce applications. After all, Christmas can strain the happiest of marriages. But did you know that annual holidays can be just as bad?

Marriages can linger on because you manage to lead separate lives the rest of the year, but the enforced proximity of two weeks together, 24 hours a day, can signal the demise of an ailing relationship. MY WAY

Jackie Morrison Actress Jackie Morrison, talks to us about her love of performing and her upcoming role in Curve’s production of Abigail’s Party I was born in Glasgow into a family of professional singers. My Dad is the leading Scottish baritone Peter Morrison and my brother Richard is also a successful opera singer. Mum too was a professional singer until my brother and I came along, so it’s not surprising performing was in my blood. It’s very much the family business! It felt inevitable that I’d end up in the theatre, whether as an actress or a musician. At school I sang, played piano, cello and oboe (the oboe didn’t last long as I sounded like a strangled duck). Having signed up for a one year acting and stage management course in Kirkcaldy, I found my thirst for acting and went on to train at Mountview Theatre School in London. My first theatrical acting role was in Cowardy Custard at Perth Rep, which was an ensemble piece based on the music of Noel Coward. I remember being excited because it was the first time I had to find “theatre digs”. As you can imagine I had an absolute ball even though the director was keen to assert his authority on the new drama school graduate! Earlier in my career, I did a lot of television work. I was in the running for the lead in Carlton TV’s first big drama series called Head Over Heals. I sat by the phone for days waiting to hear if I’d got the part. I did and it was a big break for me! I went on to play Rona Swanson in the long running TV series, Dr. Finlay, on the back of which I was called for a casting to play Sandy in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie with Patricia Hodge. I got the part, toured with the play and then transferred to the Strand Theatre in the West End. My proudest achievement is going back to theatre after having children. I’d decided to concentrate on TV, Radio and my

singing work while the children were “wee” as theatre is all consuming and takes you away from home for long periods of time. Then one day I got a call from the wonderful Robin Herford (director of The Woman in Black) who asked me to play Amanda in Private Lives. I couldn’t turn it down!

I’m excited to be playing the part of Sue in Curve’s production of Abigail’s Party. I’d read the play before I auditioned but had never seen the infamous Mike Leigh production. I don’t want to give too much away about my character but she seems gentle and intelligent but at the same time insecure and awkward in the company of the other guests. The play provides a thought-provoking insight into marriage but the audience will inevitably make up their own minds about the characters and their relationships. After Abigail’s Party, I’m looking forward to being at home in Leicestershire and paying lots of attention to my brilliant kids, and Mabel the dog. Oh and as this is the wedding edition, my husband as well! Abigail’s Party runs at Curve from 17 Oct - 8 Nov. For tickets visit www.curveonline.co.uk
