Last month I turned 40 and so it’s perhaps not surprising I’ve been a little preoccupied of late with thoughts of getting older. Editing our Age is Just an Attitude issue this month has therefore been quite a cathartic experience and I now have loads of fabulous ideas for looking and feeling younger. From caring for ageing skin, fashion trends to suit you whatever your age and simple tips for de-ageing yourself it’s all here! In Life & Work follow our guide to setting-up your own business and what to consider when having parents move in with you and your family. On the home front we look at how to teach your old house, new tricks in The Renovation Game, and create nostalgic interiors for your bathroom. Old really is the new…new! Looking for new experiences? Take a leaf out of actress Helen Hunt’s book, whose latest film The Sessions is her most daring yet! For those wanting something a little less risqué then check out this month’s travel feature, A Passion for Learning. Have a great May and remember - whatever your age it’s only a number! Until next time.

FitnessSOS Last month our Editor was amazed at the results she’d achieved in the first 4 weeks of her fitness programme. Has she kept up the good work?

Image: Joanne Withers, Nine Photos

But this month threw a curveball - my birthday, and not just any birthday but the BIG ONE... 40! Let’s face it we all have special occasions and if like me food features highly at such times, then it’s realistic to expect any weight loss results to be hampered. I spoke to Rebecca beforehand and was a little relieved that she told me to have a good time and not worry about the plan. Don’t get me wrong I ate

and drank what I wanted on the day but realised that the day before and after I was making more sensible choices whereas previously I would have thought “I’ll start again on Monday”. The results in truth were better than I thought they would be. I’ve lost 3lbs (target 4lb), 1.5cm from both my waist and arms and 3.5cm from my hips. My body fat has also reduced by a further 1.5%. So it would seem a little bit of what you fancy doesn’t do you any harm.

Age

Is just an attitude? M

There can be no doubt that reaching a milestone age strikes fear into the bravest among us, but what is it we are so afraid of? This month we asked Gillian Carter of Apple Counselling in Leicester, if ‘age is just an attitude’...

ilestone ages are not scary in themselves but they do focus our minds on what we are doing or rather what we feel we should be doing. Are we fulfilled? Are we running out of time to achieve our dreams? Often we create mental checklists in our minds of things we want to have achieved by a certain age and women in particular are guilty of this. For example a common checklist might read:

20+ travellin g, hav ing fun 25+ relation ship com mit ment 30+ property lad der, drea m job 35+ babies We look around us and see our friends achieving these goals and this holds a mirror up to us and creates more pressure. We look at our peers and somehow determine that we should be doing what they are doing. Sometimes we focus so hard on

achieving the items on our mental checklists that we forget to look around and enjoy the present. Instead we can, if we choose, look upon these milestones as an opportunity for celebration and reflection. There is always something we can appreciate. For example, often in our twenties, we do not have the confidence that a little experience brings. Our priorities change as we get older as we learn what is valuable to us. We can choose to focus more on those things and filter out the things which do not matter to us anymore. You may think you have a fear of turning 30, 40 or 50 but in order to conquer this feeling we have to address what the number represents to us, then ask ourselves if this is realistic and if so, what positive changes can we make today to bring us closer to achieving our dreams.

Life can be very joyous at times but can also throw unexpected changes our way. As long as we are alive, we can adapt and make choices to enhance our sense of happiness and those with a few extra years under our belts have undoubtedly learned the skills to cope more successfully with whatever comes our way. So why not indulge in some mental time travel and ask yourself what made you happy in the past? For example spending time with particular friends, visiting specific places, a different job perhaps? Are there changes we can make to increase our sense of wellbeing and happiness now? If so, go for it!

“ Remember - we are unique individuals and can achieve at any age.” 19

LIFE & WORK

Never

Too Late Earlier this year we interviewed three local ‘mumpreneurs’ that had given up their full-time employment to start their own businesses. It’s really never too late to change career direction; so this month we look at what you might need to consider if you’re tempted to go it alone!

Winning Idea

First, work out if your idea has legs. Ask friends and family if they would buy the product or service. Then take it to a wider audience by posting details on Facebook and Twitter. You can also set up a survey on a site like wufoo.com to test the market further. Don’t be disheartened if you receive negative feedback. Listen to what has been said, go back to the drawing board and incorporate their ideas.

Setting Up

Establishing the company as a legal entity is reasonably straightforward. The easiest way to start a business is to become a ‘sole trader’. This means that only you own the business and you can work alone or employ other people. Go to www.gov.uk/ set-up-business-uk for further advice. If you need or want to register for VAT (you can do so optionally, which can have tax benefits for small businesses), you will need to set up a business bank account. For more on taxation matters, head to www.hmrc.gov.uk.

Trademark

Coming up with a brand name is free but trademarking is not. The most robust and cost-effective method is through the Government’s own facility www.ipo.gov. uk. The ‘Right Start’ application process is simple, doesn’t cost the earth and includes the legal registration at the end.

Location, Location, Location

Premises are another major and potentially costly consideration. If you can do it from home, go for it! A simple office-based venture requires a computer, an internet connection and possibly a phone. With software like Skype, you can make and receive voice and video calls all from your computer and never have to pick up a phone, or pay for line rental. You may also qualify for tax relief on utilities such as electricity.

Online Presence

In this digital age, you will need to set up a website. Use a site like www.easily.co.uk to see how much a domain would cost - plus arrange hosting facilities and email accounts to use with the site. Building the website is the harder part. There are companies that will build one for you from a few hundred to a few thousand pounds. Do your research as you don’t always get what you pay for. Alternatively have a go yourself! These are just a few considerations and there are many more, not to mention business planning, marketing and managing your finances; but setting up your own business needn’t be difficult. For a great resource, head to www.gov.uk/browse/business

LIFE & WORK

Moving In?

For many 40+ couples, planning their own retirement has taken a back seat to helping their ageing parents navigate the golden years. Sometimes referred to as the ‘sandwich generation’, this group is tasked with caring for their parents while still tending to growing children. Whilst there are a range of care options available including retirement properties, care in the home, assisted living, nursing homes etc. each year millions of families consider having an elderly parent move into their home. This month we look at 7 issues you should consider when deciding whether to have a parent live with you:

1

Often people don't consider moving a parent into their home until they have a chronic health problem. It is important to find out as much as you can about the illness and how it is likely to progress in the future. This will help to inform your decision on what level of care may be required.

2

Be realistic about what you can and can’t do. For example if your parent needs help with bathing, dressing, or going to the bathroom, are you comfortable helping or indeed physically able to? Also if you have a full-time job and young children at home, you may need access to at-home care services.

3

Do you get on? All families have some conflict, and if both of you can get over it quickly or simply agree to disagree, then there should be few difficulties. However, if the two of you have never really got along, don't expect the relationship to change magically now.

4

Is your home older-parent friendly i.e. do you have enough bedrooms, will they need ground floor access, does your home require renovation and is it affordable, and will everyone including your parent have sufficient privacy?

5

Moving someone into your home can be a financial drain. However, grandparents often want to contribute to the household, from food bills and rent to the renovations required to prepare your home. Ideally come to a financial agreement before they move in.

6

If your parent needs a lot of help and supervision, you and your spouse will get a lot less alone time and your social lives may be put on hold. Make sure you're both prepared for this sacrifice before proceeding.

7

If your parent is moving a long distance to live with you, they’ll be leaving behind their social network and friends. Sexual

Healing...

Helen Hunt has always prided herself on being a relatively fearless and forthright woman. Certainly, her decision to take on the role of a sexual surrogate in The Sessions is one of the boldest career moves she’s taken. Based on a true story, The Sessions which was released in the UK earlier this year, sees Hunt play Cheryl Greene, a sexual surrogate who helps childhood polio survivor Mark O'Brien (John Hawkes) achieve sexual fulfilment after a lifetime spent partially paralyzed. Here Hunt talks to us about the film, growing up in Hollywood and how motherhood has changed her.

Here you have a woman who is very normal, very middleclass... yet her job involves having sex with strangers

26

The Sessions attracted a tremendous amount of media attention because of the amount of nudity in the film. Was this something you were wary about?

How did you approach this role of a normal mother with such an extraordinary job?

My only consideration was whether the media attention would detract from the story and the issues the film raises. In the U.S. nudity and sex is still something that freaks out a lot of people whereas in Europe no one cares that much. It's a different cultural context even though I really don't understand all the fuss. Wouldn't it be great if we could all get use to the idea and not feel that the naked human body is something strange or shocking?

I tried to understand that she has a great sense of caring and is totally comfortable with her body and with human sexuality. It's liberating to play a woman like that. Here you have a woman who is very normal, very middle-class, who's a ‘soccer mom’, and yet her job involves having sex with strangers who generally have serious physical disabilities. Sexual surrogacy is very different from prostitution in that there are very real emotional needs which are also being fulfilled.

What attracted you to make this film?

Were the sex scenes difficult to shoot?

It's such a strong and moving story. There are so few good roles out there for middle-aged women, that when you get a chance to be involved in a film like this and take on a fascinating character you're willing to do almost anything, including spending a lot of time naked in front of a film crew. But there was no way to tell this story without being naked.

Sex scenes are never very exciting or interesting to do. It's all about having the right camera angle, doing take after take. There's not a lot of acting involved. It's the emotional bond between the characters that sweeps you up into the film. You forget about the nudity to a large extent because the story engrosses you.

robbed of my childhood or that the experience of starting my acting career so young warped me in any way. It was a lot of fun! How have your priorities changed since your daughter Makena was born? I won’t take on any film project where I can’t spend time with her after the day's shooting is done, so in that sense, yes. I love being a mother and driving her to school every morning. Those kinds of responsibilities give me so much pleasure in life. Has motherhood changed you in any other ways? I’ve tried to be less stressed-out and much more easy-going. I’ve worked hard at not showing Makena that I’m worried about things - since that’s my nature - and learning to be more at ease with everything in life. That’s my greatest challenge and I can happily report that I’m winning the battle, although I still have a little way to go to get to where I want to be in terms of who I want to be. Helen Hunt with The Sessions co-star John Hawkes

You began acting at an early age. How has that affected you? I still went to school and lived a pretty normal life; it wasn't like I was starring in Harry Potter films or anything on that level. But obviously when you’re spending you summers working on a set you definitely grow up faster because you’re spending all your time with adults. I’m sure it affected me in ways I couldn’t understand but I never felt I was

his gorgeous comedy-drama comes from Susanne Bier, the director of After the Wedding and 2011’s Oscar-winning In a Better World. Having finished her cancertreatment, middle-aged hairdresser Ida (Trine Dyrholm) walks in on her husband in bed with his younger co-worker. With an upcoming trip to Italy to celebrate her daughter’s

wedding, Ida elects to go alone. There she meets father of the groom Philip (the dapper and always handsome Pierce Brosnan) a bitter widower struggling to come to terms with his wife’s death. Superbly written and acted all-round, this is an intelligent and warmhearted drama, with both Ida and Philip refusing to accept that middle-age is too late to start over.

Similar in tone to last year’s Hope Springs but with a more dramatic edge, few will fail to be charmed by the great combination of Dyrholm and Brosnan, and with summer right around the corner expect

a spike in holidays booked to Southern Italy! The gorgeous countryside is lovingly shot - from a picturesque boat-trip around the coast to the sundappled fields of a lemon plantation – Bellissimo!

book Review

If there was ever a medium to transcend age, then it’s the novel. Many adults re-read childhood favourites and the sophisticated selection of teen fiction nowadays packs a literary punch not just with youngsters. Harper Collins are celebrating some classic examples with beautiful clothbound re-issues.

Fahrenheit 451

Ray Bradbury

Standing alongside Orwell’s 1984 and Huxley’s Brave New World this is a prophetic account of Western civilization’s enslavement by the media, drugs and conformity. Bradbury’s powerful and poetic prose combines with uncanny insight into the potential of technology to create a novel which, decades on from first publication, still has the power to dazzle and shock.

The Hobbit

I, Robot

J. R. R. Tolkien Features the complete story plus brand new reproductions of all the drawings and maps by the author. Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely travelling further than the pantry of his hobbit-hole in Bag End until the wizard Gandalf convinces him to embark on an Unexpected Journey.

Isaac Asimov 1: A robot may not injure a human being or allow a human being to come to harm. 2: A robot must obey orders given to it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. 3: A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law. But what happens when a rogue robot’s idea of what is good for society contravenes the Three Laws?

A Taste Of

Childhood This month’s recipe by Lucy Cufflin from Lucy’s Food.

Ingredients: To fill a tin approx 30x 40cm n 150g caster sugar n 250g runny honey n 1 teaspoon baking powder n 300g plain flour n 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon n 2 teaspoons ground ginger n Good pinch nutmeg n 100g ground almonds

T

For the topping: n 150g icing sugar n Few drops of water to mix

Doris Schrieber joined my family from her home in Switzerland, in late 1963 to help my mum with three children under 4 years old - me being the youngest at 6 months. Her planned short stay extended to several years and Doris became part of our family forever, even after returning to Switzerland.

1 Melt the honey and sugar together in a saucepan with the cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger. 2 Remove from the heat and leave to cool for 2 minutes. 3 Add the flour, almonds and baking powder and mix to a chewy dough. 4 Line the tin with baking parchment and then press the dough into the tin flattening it out with a wet knife or wet fingers. 5 Leave out before baking for 1 hour then bake for 15 minutes at 375F/190C. 6 Whilst still hot mix the icing sugar with just enough water for it to drizzle over the biscuit. 7 Leave to cool and then cut into squares. 8 Store in a tin.

asting a flavour from the past can invoke very strong memories, transporting you back to your childhood with sounds of laughter and pictures of fun times growing up.

Doris introduced many wonders to our family life but one thing that has remained with us is Leckerli - somewhere between a biscuit and a cake made only in her home city of Basel. Heavy on honey and scented with candied peel, cinnamon and ginger. When recently looking for authentic Swiss recipes to add to our menus for the ski company I work for, I came across a recipe for Leckerli and have been making it frantically ever since. I find candied peel is not a favourite flavour so have gone heavy on the ginger and cinnamon instead and after a bit of research it seems that candied peel was introduced to the recipe about 500 years ago in place of the much more expensive ground ginger - so I like to think I am being true to an original recipe but in truth I am making it the way I like it.

Serving Suggestion: This sweet treat is perfect on its own or dipped in a chocolate fondue. You can add nuts, dried fruit, or even chocolate chips and it’ll last for weeks in a tin. Enjoy a taste of my childhood! Let us know what food reminds you of your childhood on facebook:

Is Older Better? When it comes to wine, age or ‘vintage’ is an area most people tend to find complicated and confusing. Not least because there is no single answer. We asked independent wine merchant Duncan Murray based in Market Harborough, to give us the low down on the factors which influence a wine’s ageing potential.

Colour

Rosé wine isn’t generally intended to be kept; it’s made to be drunk young so it keeps that wonderful freshness you associate with sipping a chilled rosé al fresco. The same goes for crisp, white wines such as Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio. The clue is in the style of wine; richer styles such as white Burgundies made from the Chardonnay grape - and sweet wines such as Sauternes can age beautifully and provide gorgeous, complex flavours. With regard to red wine, again it’s a question of style. With light-bodied reds, you can apply the same principle as with light whites and rosés. The fuller bodied you go, the more ageing potential you’ll find but that’s not to say that all full-bodied reds will taste better with age.

Vintage

The vintage or year should be written on the label. For the vast majority of whites I’d advise you to look for recent vintages (2011 and 2012) to ensure they’ll deliver on the crisp, vibrant fruit the winemaker wants you to enjoy. The same applies to light-bodied reds. The bottle also offers up a clue. Screw caps and plastic corks are broadly used for wines meant to be drunk young so go for cork if you’re looking to keep a wine.

Weather

Climate & weather plays a huge part in determining the success of a wine; for example, the Shiraz grape likes dry, sunny weather so a wet summer is the last thing the winemaker wants. Late frosts can blight a harvest and even worse, drought and floods can totally decimate them.

Therefore, knowing the weather conditions in a given year is key to determining the desirability of the wine of that vintage.

Expertise

The winemaker’s skill can make or break a wine, so check out their credentials and their vineyard’s pedigree. Do a bit of homework - look for any awards they’ve received and read what the wine press says about them.

Price

Look at the price. A £4 Merlot will definitely not get better with age! For wines that can age up to 5 years, you should be looking at spending at least £10-£15 per bottle - and then that’s no guarantee.

Again, it’s about having a little knowledge to help you make the right decision. Finally if you’re unsure and would like specialist advice, I’m sure your local wine merchant would be willing to guide you.

Renovation Game The

In Leicestershire we benefit from some of the finest period property, with the abundance of Victorian and Edwardian construction of the inner city and suburbs and the Georgian market towns and villages in our countryside. We enjoy the architectural appearance of these buildings and the character and design features it offers our homes, but how do we go about adapting these properties for modern living?

We asked Peter Wyatt, Director of local Estate Agent Fothergill Wyatt what you should consider when converting or renovating a period property to incorporate new design, modern fittings and updated adornments. Professional Advice Making alterations to a period property whether or not you intend to extend may be restricted by your location, property status or other planning guidelines. Questions to ask yourself are - Is the building listed? Do I require planning permission? Am I in a conservation area? It’s always best to consult your local authority, architect or chartered surveyor first. If you are extending or envisage major alterations employ a suitably

38

experienced architect who will take a holistic view of the project and advise on contractors, materials, planning and legal issues. More often than not home renovators seek to open up living spaces by removing walls. A qualified structural engineer will also be essential in advising on maintaining the structural soundness of the property in achieving your desired alterations. Contractors The standard of finish is only as good as the quality of trades you employ. In period property renovation, experience and understanding of original design features, how to restore or replicate them and how to implement new fittings sympathetically is vital. You may seek recommendation from a property consultant or

architect for an appropriate contractor. Interior Design Combining period design with energy efficiency, and original features with contemporary facilities is a tricky balance. Firstly consider what is most important to you as the home consumer, and secondly consider the value of enhancements or alterations you make.

“always think ahead and always seek professional advice An interior designer may assist you with selecting the best soft furnishings to modernise a period space but you should also ensure that they advise on

the best practical use of accommodation. Effective positioning of your appliances, use of storage and technical gadgetry is important whilst focusing on enhancing the appearance of valuable period aesthetics and concealing the practical items. The full enjoyment and future value of the property is only maximised in our opinion if you achieve the right balance between a period shell and a modern interior. This will be largely guided by personal taste but a poorly judged modernisation of the shell or period replication of the interior will fail the objective entirely. Whether you are a period home enthusiast or simply want a lifestyle tailored property always think ahead, and always seek professional advice.

I have a large Magnolia Soulangeana shrub which is just about to burst into flower. The shrub has become rather large for my garden. When can I prune a Magnolia and if so what time of year should this be carried out?

By its very nature a Magnolia will grow into a lovely graceful shrub or tree over many years. I recommend Magnolias should be left well alone except for the annual tidy up of dead or unsightly crossed branches; this should be carried out during Midsummer.

During the second year the Magnolia may throw However you stated the out several vigorous shoots shrub is getting too large so (water shoots) which can I would recommend again spoil the shape, so make before Midsummer sure these are removed or taking out the longest and grub the buds back as soon widest branches down to the as they form.

Q

I have a small garden with some nice flowering shrubs, but ideally would love to have a fruit bush. What can you recommend to plant in the border?

A

A fruit bush well worth considering would be the Blueberry plant; this has fantastic white flowers during spring time and an attractive green leaf. The berries develop and ripen during the summer months in which time they can be harvested. One of the best features of the Blueberry is the autumn colour; during late September / early October the leaves turn a vibrant orange and red, which looks fantastic in any ornamental border.

Blueberry plants thrive in low PH soils, so plant and mulch them with plenty of acid compost, also keep the plant regularly fed to ensure bumper crops.

My Way...

Fiona Allan

The vivacious Chief Executive of Curve theatre talks to us about her love of music, leaving Sydney and horses. My love of the arts goes back to childhood. I was fortunate to go to schools where art and music were an important part of the curriculum. I wasn’t good at sports so I learnt about social cohesion, team work, confidence, self-awareness through music. It’s heart-breaking that many children in schools today don’t have the opportunity to experience the joy of participating and performing.

What’s your favourite show? War Horse. I’ve seen it 3 times already

How do you relax? I ride my horse Ronan every morning before work

What was the last book you read? The Ladies Paradise by Émile Zola

What’s your favourite piece of music? Stravinsky’s ‘Rite of Spring’

My first degree was in Music and English. I chose the two subjects I enjoyed most. This was way back in the days before university fees and it didn’t seem like such decadence at the time. After university I taught music and was a gigging musician in Sydney. I realised this was a tough road in terms of making a living so decided to move into the arts management side of things. Prior to working at Curve I was the artistic director at Wales Millennium Centre, where I was employed to help develop their creative programme and artistic policies. Leaving Sydney to live in Britain didn’t seem like a risk, more of an adventure. My initial contract was for a year, so I thought if I don’t like it I can go home again. That was 9 years ago! There is no typical day in the role as Chief Executive. I may be speaking to sponsors, working on the artistic programmes or looking at how to develop audiences. A large proportion of my job is around raising Curve’s profile on a national platform and developing partnerships with other theatres. My ultimate goal is that Curve’s home-grown productions like ‘Piaf ’ are taken out on tour. I’m tremendously proud we achieved the Visit England National Gold Award for Access. This doesn’t relate simply to physical access, but our wider offering such as audio described and sign performances, touch tours for those that are sight impaired; as well as allowing community groups access to space, free exhibitions, workshops and weekly music concerts. We were also commended for the accessibility of ticket prices - our dress rehearsals are as little as £2 and preview shows are half price. There’s a lot the community can engage with at Curve without having to buy a ticket. My focus for the rest of 2013, is Curve’s 5th Birthday. We’ll be running a whole host of activities and events throughout the autumn, culminating with a new production of Chicago in November.
