URGENT SUPPORT NEEDED On Wednesday 13th December 2017 I received a truly horrifying voicemail that all parents/families dread “your daughter has been hit by a car”. Knowing the route she takes to school I instantly knew that it would have something to do with the crossing of the A308 at The Black Dog Junction, Ashford; our worst fears had been realised.

This junction controls 14 lanes of traffic and is used by 100’s of vehicles/pedestrians each day, yet there is not a safe crossing system in place for pedestrians.

An urgent review is required.

In light of that incident, we have vowed to do all we can to put pressure on the necessary authorities to urgently review the pedestrian safety at this junction, with a view to installing a safe crossing system.

STAINES UPON THAMES IS BUZZING The excitement is building in Staines-uponThames. With Primark opening in the Elmsleigh Centre, the Premier Inn opening in the summer and another major retailer on its way there’s a new buzz about.

If you have been in Staines-upon-Thames recently you may have come across the new BID Rangers too who have been helping people find their way, helping to find lost children, administering first aid and patrolling the streets keeping the peace.

The BID Rangers operate on Saturdays and Sundays, public and school holidays.

Events are on the rise with the new ‘Pet Celebration’ taking place on the High Street on the 14th & 15th April with displays, demonstrations, clinics, pet products, crafts and gifts, shows, competitions & activities to try. Look out for the mobile petting farms, the alpacas and the Two Rivers Prettiest Pet Competition.

The next Comedy Night will be on Friday 11th May 2018 in the Staines Community Centre with another fabulous line up.

Staines-upon-Thames Day returns on Sunday 1 July 2018 with a World Cup Fever theme to include a two day World Food Market and World Stage on the High Street on Saturday 30th June and Sunday 1st July 2018.

SPELTHORNE IN THE ZONE Our campaign team comprising Spelthorne Borough and County Councillors, representatives of the Spelthorne Business Forum and the Staines-upon-Thames Business Improvement Development team are planning to carry out a feasibility study to prove to the new operators of our rail lines, First Group and South Western Railways, that footfall into our stations would increase with the introduction of Oyster ticketing.

The Study will be undertaken by the academic and student members of the Royal Holloway University who will be collecting information on different aspects of rail travel and how being included in TFL zoning would positively benefit the Borough of Spelthorne.

As part of this study, we are currently assessing how people travel outside of Spelthorne's stations to others that have Oyster payment facilities.

NEW WEEKLY SOCIAL GROUP 'CAFÉ CULTURE' Following the success of Café Culture in Cranleigh we are pleased to announce that we have launched this weekly activity in Staines.

Come along and join Age UK Surrey for a chat every Thursday 2pm - 4pm at Notcutts Garden Centre coffee shop at Notcutts Garden Centre, 150 Staines Road, Laleham, Staines, TW18 2SF. Anyone aged 50+ is welcome and no booking required. Get to know others who live in your area and enjoy a weekly get-together in a friendly, social environment.

People are welcome to come on their own and bring their carers or family members to join in with the conversations.

Terry, one of our Café Culture clients said: “It’s not easy meeting new friends once you’ve retired.” “When you retire you lose about twothirds of your friends and acquaintances.

I don’t have any family and I have lost some of my friends on top of this, so it gets a bit lonely.

It’s nice to have somewhere to go where you

can meet for a coffee and have a chat with new people and make new friends.”

Café Culture is a great new initiative that encourages people to get out of the house and make new friends in a social environment on a weekly basis”.

Loneliness and isolation is a growing issue within our communities.

Café Culture is one of the initiatives that we are setting up in Staines to encourage people over the age of 50 to meet up weekly as a social group within the community.

MASTER YOUR TIME, MASTER YOUR LIFE Do you ever start the day with a huge To-Do list; either written or in your head, and with perfect intentions of ploughing systematically all the way through it? But then, somehow throughout the course of the day other things creep in, ebbing away at your time; texts, messages and social media can be the biggest time-suckers. But also requests from others or reactive work is a killer too. Until finally you get to the end of the day and wonder with a heavy heart how in seven or so hours you weren’t able to at least complete the top three most important things on your list. Aaaargh!!!! This is a common problem in our fast-paced digital world. The good news is there are strategies and tips out there which can help.

Here is just one nice tool called The Jar of Life; We all have 24 hours in a day (a jar with finite capacity if you like) but how you choose to fill your jar is up to you. You have three things you can fill it with; rocks, pebbles and sand. Each is a metaphor for an area of your life. Crucially, you can fill your jar (your time) in any order you like. But you must stop when the jar is full, and you have run out of time.

•

Do you put your rocks in first? That is your friends, family, health; things that money can't buy?

•

Or do you put in your pebbles; that's the things that matter, but much less than your rocks, such as your job (yes, believe it or not this is a pebble!!), your hobbies, spending time with friends you like less.

•

Most importantly when do you put in your sand? This is the very small stuff like social media, text messages, menial tasks and even being mad at people for silly things.

The stuff that wastes time.

Can you see where this is going yet? If you choose to fill your jar (your finite 24 hours) with sand first you won't have any room for your pebbles or your rocks - the really important stuff in your life. So the moral of this lovely little analogy is to fill your jar with your rocks first, then your pebbles, then lastly your sand.

And if there isn't enough room for all of your sand, well hey that wasn't the important stuff anyway. So the question is… what are you going to put into your jar of life first tomorrow?

THE SPELTHORNE BUSINESS PLAN COMPETITION Many people have a great business idea but few go on to make it happen. The Spelthorne Business Plan Competition could help you do exactly that.

Kwasi Kwarteng MP for Spelthorne is hosting his 5th annual competition aimed at inspiring entrepreneurs to enter the competition for a chance to win a package of £3,500 plus mentoring support and free website and logo design.

The six best entries will be asked to present their business plan to a panel of expert judges at a Dragons’ Den style final hosted at BP on 24 May 2018.

The competition is open to Spelthorne residents aged over 16*. Entries are welcome from individuals or teams of up to four people. To enter all you have to do is fill

The Spelthorne Business Plan Competition — 2018

ONE GREAT IDEA WINS £3,500 The Spelthorne Business Plan Competition represents a search for the local business entrepreneurs of tomorrow.

Details Participants are asked to think of a business idea and fill in a short online form. The best participants will be asked to submit a business plan and pitch their ideas to a panel of business experts in a “Dragons’ Den” style final.

Prizes The winner will receive £3500, deposited into a business bank account. Plus mentoring and support to help them bring their business ideas to life. The runner up will receive £1000 and third place will receive £200.

Eligibility All participants must be residents of, work in or currently be in education in the borough of Spelthorne. All participants must be aged 16 or over. The competition can be entered by individuals or in teams (4 people max).

SUCCESSFUL LAUNCH OF NEW NETWORKING CLUB A new networking club got off to a very successful launch, Business Biscotti Staines met for the first time on Thursday 8th February at The Thames Lodge in Staines Upon Thames.

WATCH OUT, WE CAUSE GOOD HABITS IN YOUNG CHILDREN! Tina Stubbs, the author and illustrator behind the ‘Life’s Little Bugs’, set out with a goal to develop a series of picture books that will engage young readers with good habits in a positive, fun way.

With art and graphics always being a major passion of Tina’s, eventually she went on to achieve a diploma in Children’s Illustration from the London Art College, helping her to transform the Life’s Little Bugs characters she had already designed into lovely book illustrations.

The books went on to receive the Reviewers Product Award from the popular parenting website Bizziebabies and Tina herself recently scooped the prestigious 'Sylvia Anderson Children's Author' award at Pinewood Film Studios.

‘The concept of Life’s Little Bugs was first created when I was a working, single parent living in London’ Tina told us.

‘I have first-hand experience in nagging my own son about handwashing… ‘Why is there still dirt under your nails?’, nagging him about tooth brushing …’ Why is your toothbrush still dry?’, nagging him about showing respect … ‘Please, not another spaceman scribbled on my wall!’ and the on-going struggle to get him to make healthy choices that usually ended with me shouting ‘Just eat it!’

The humorous rhyme and quirky illustrations have proved very popular at many school and library story times & are often accompanied with some fun, related educational activities too.

Through studying various learning methods, she noted repetition to be a very powerful way to learn & is key in developing any habit.

Swimming: a skill for life?

Learning to swim is vital and whilst most parents are aware of this, they can still prioritise other extra-curricular activities over swimming. At Sports Generation, we fervently believe that swimming is one of the most important life skills, a skill that should be acquired as early as possible.

We feel it is essential that children grow up with no fear of water, developing water confidence and good technique. Even if your child never goes swimming, they should know how to swim because they could fall into water at any time. There are water hazards everywhere – beaches, pools, rivers, lakes, ponds, waterparks and

even your own inflatable in the back garden. A small child can drown in just two feet of water, so learning how to behave in and around water is crucial.

Very young children who are comfortable in water are easier to teach to swim when they are ready to learn formal strokes, so starting at an early age is strongly recommended.

At Sports Generation, we teach children from 3 months old. They are taught not to be afraid of the water by learning to get their faces wet, blow bubbles and take a breath.

They then move onto learning how to float and breathe properly whilst doing simple strokes.

A YEAR AS MAYOR Being Mayor is a huge privilege and brings great opportunities alongside the responsibilities.

The civic side of the role, formally representing and promoting Spelthorne at official events, has taken us across Surrey, into London and much further afield, and of course to our twinned town Melun, outside Paris for their annual gastronomic competition when, following tradition, I was inaugurated into the Brotherhood of Brie, their speciality.

There are concerns that volunteering is falling off but I am struggling to think of anywhere we’ve been, even larger, formal occasions, where some aspect or other hasn’t been supported by volunteers. Invitations from local organisations to meet their members and, crucially, their volunteers have included community centres, schools and playgroups, churches and faith groups, uniformed youth organisations, music, arts and sports societies, and of course charities supporting quality of life for all ages. Events have ranged in size from hundreds in a fun-run to opening a corner shop, each with a unique memory.

The local charities I chose to support are - Spelthorne Dementia Support, helping suffers and their carers; Impossible Dream, a boat converted to take wheelchair-users on the river; and the Swan Sanctuary, wildfowl hospital and veterinary centre.

I am so proud that Spelthorne is very rich in support and glad I have been able to thank so many for making life better for others in every way imaginable.

As mayor I wanted to highlight the borough’s position on the River Thames. So when the Queen’s rowbarge ‘Gloriana’ undertook a new role to lead my River Day, I was delighted this also offered me a different way to thank some 40 volunteers who joined me on board. My heartfelt thanks go to the river community

who came together to provide a flotilla the whole way from Sunbury to Staines and to the thousands who lined the banks; it was simply fabulous – an unforgettable occasion for all of us painted by a local artist and which I featured on my Christmas card. I have accepted all river invitations, including being rowed through thunderstorms in the Great River Race from Docklands to Ham!

For my fund-raising programme, I am very fortunate that Shepperton Studios, Sunbury Music Club, the Thames Court and Kempton Park are holding special evenings for me this spring. For the events I am organising I have the support of a small team of friends and, together with other local community-minded folks, we have held a commemoration of 1917 Battle of Passendaele, and a wine-tasting.

I would like to mention two events still to come - a St George’s Day Ladies Lunch and the all-important Mayor’s Charity Ball which I am proud to say this year returns to the borough.

The theme is James Bond, date 7th April and my thanks to BP for providing the venue.

We were warned that the year would fly by; while it certainly has we are looking forward to many more events -and fun- before 17th May!

Ashford Folk Dancers (AFD ) celebrated in style this Valentine’s Day on Wednesday 14th February as it was their regular Wednesday club night. Most dancers wore hearts to celebrate the day.

ASHFORD RESIDENTS JOIN ‘DEMENTIA FRIENDLY’ CAMPAIGN A group of 10 people in Ashford became ‘Dementia Friends’ recently, as part of a campaign to tackle the stigma and lack of understanding around the condition.

The group attended a free onehour Information Session at the Kare Plus office in Church road, run by local Dementia Friends Champion Kerry Richards.

Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friends programme is the biggest ever initiative to change people’s perceptions of dementia. It aims to transform the way the nation thinks, talks and acts about the condition. The charity wants there to be a four million Dementia Friends with the know-how to help people with dementia feel understood and included in their community.

There are currently 850,000 people living with the condition in England.

Dementia Friends Champions are volunteers who talk to people about being a Dementia Friend in their communities. Speaking about the Session, Kerry Richards said:

‘I was so pleased to see people showing their support for people with dementia, by coming along to the Session and becoming Dementia Friends. We need to create more communities and businesses that are dementia friendly so that people affected by dementia feel understood and included.’

Kerry signed up to be a Dementia Friends Champion last year and attended a one-day training course on how to deliver the sessions.

She continued: ‘I signed up to be a Dementia Friends Champion because I have worked with people living with dementia for over 20 years and wanted to do something positive to help. I’m so proud to be part of a growing network of people helping to create dementia friendly communities across England.’

Louise Bates, Dementia Friends Regional Support Officer at Alzheimer’s Society said: ‘Whether you attend a face-to-face Session or watch the online video, Dementia Friends is about learning more about dementia and the small ways you can help. From telling friends about the Dementia Friends programme to visiting someone you know living with dementia, every action counts.’

WHY TEACH YOUNG CHILDREN TO COOK? There are many good reasons to teach young children the joys of being in the kitchen. Now more than ever, we need to promote healthy eating habits and encourage food awareness.

As well as all this, cooking also provides the opportunity for our children to learn new skills such as maths, measuring, listening to direction, sensory and cultural awareness!!!

cookery club at Clarendon Primary School in Ashford. Karina and Rosemary from Tesco Ashford provided several types of fish pates, cheeses and some exotic fruits. They discussed with the kids where the food came from and encouraged them to try the things they had not tried before. It was a fun cookery club that day!

Totally Tangerine Cookery, run by Catherine Hayes, offers hands on lunch time and after school cookery clubs in primary schools to teach young children this valuable life skill. The children get to cook savoury and sweet dishes from scratch as well as try new foods and ingredients from around the world which will hopefully spark their curiosity and develop a lifelong love for food. We want our kids to grow up having the confidence to cook for themselves and making healthier eating choices.

The classes are practical, hands on and fun!

The kids are encouraged to try new foods, learn and explore new flavours. All the ingredients, an apron, utensils and cooking know-how are provided as well as a wipe clean recipe card to take home.

Totally Tangerine Cookery and the “Tesco Eat Happy Project” recently collaborated to offer a food tasting session as part of the after-school

Catherine believes it’s also important to work with the local community and is exploring ways to bring local restaurant owners and bakers into her cookery classes as guest speakers for the children to discover what food choice is available to them and to bring something different to the sessions. Totally Tangerine Cookery will also look to expand into other areas offering new workshops and classes in schools and pre-schools and in venues which will allow young adults to benefit too.
