ASHFORD KITCHENS BRAND NEW SHOWROOM Ashford Kitchens & Interiors held an official re-opening of their Ashford showroom on 28th January and it certainly drew in the crowds!

Following a 3 month refurbishment which saw the entire showroom being transformed, 10 stunning new kitchen displays and 9 spectacular new bedroom and home office displays, the ribbon was officially cut by company founder and director Richard Flower. Richard first opened the doors to the showroom in November 1984, the business, originally known as Ashford Fitted Furniture, and renamed Ashford Kitchens & Interiors Ltd in 2010, have since opened a second showroom in Farnham Common, Buckinghamshire. ‘Over the years we have firmly believed in the importance of showcasing the very latest design ideas in kitchens & bedrooms. When investing in their homes, customers want to see and touch the product in a stylish setting which is why our showrooms are regularly updated’ says Richard.

HUNDREDS TURN OUT FOR STAINES 10K CHARITY RUN Deputy Mayor Cllr Vivienne Leighton got runners underway at this year’s Staines 10K on Sunday 14 May. The race, organised by Staines Strollers and Runnymede Runners with support from Spelthorne Borough Council, saw 633 runners completing the course with the winner, Stuart MacDougall finishing in a time of 35 minutes and 24 seconds. The women’s race was won by Jaydee Peters who completed the course in 39 minutes and 17 seconds and finished 18th overall.

The Race Director, Ken Saunders, said: “The Staines 10K is a highlight for local runners drawing hundreds of spectators and competitors.

It’s fantastic to see the popularity of the race is as strong as ever and runners coming back year after year; as well as lots of new faces.

There was a really good atmosphere on the day and lots of people came to cheer on the runners. Well done to everyone who took part.”

The event was made possible thanks to a large team of dedicated volunteers and the support of the race sponsors: Everyone Active, Mova Hairdressing, Brewers, Stream AMP, London House Renovations, Brewers, Staines Chiropractic. Cousins Fruiterers, Apex Sports, The Frame Workshop, Starbucks, Staines Round Table and The TW18 magazine.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to local charities. The full results of the 2017 race are available at www.staines10k.co.uk and details of the 2018 race will be available in the autumn.

LITTLE LAMMAS SOCCER SCHOOL Staines Lammas Youth Football Club are offering a new soccer school with sessions specifically designed for those boys and girls in Reception or Year 1 of the 2017/18 school year. Training is held at Thomas Knyvett College in Ashford.

Sessions will be on Saturday mornings and will give those training in the soccer school the opportunity to be part of a growing club and eventually play in a team when they reach the age criteria.

THE SPELTHORNE BUSINESS PLAN FINAL 2017 The Spelthorne Business Plan Competition final was held on the 25th May hosted by BP at their Sunbury Head Quarters.

Six finalists pitched in a Dragons Den style final for a prize of £3,500 and a years package of business support to help them get their business started.

The standard of entry was extremely high and all finalists gave professional and well thought out presentations.

Third place and a prize of £500 was awarded to Kirsti McCabe for her web based business idea “The Routine Edit”

The winners were presented their prizes by Kwasi Kwarteng and Roberto Tambini, Chief Executive of Spelthorne Borough Council.

All of the other finalists will be awarded £150.

PARENTING SUCCESS SUMMER FUN WITH AN EDUCATIONAL TWIST It is important to have a rest from school over the summer, but we can still combine the holiday with fun activities that will support our child’s learning, independency, help them get ready to go back to school and at the same time have a great time together.

Why not use the holiday as an opportunity to introduce and delegate chores and responsibilities to all family members! This in return will not only make you a happier, more proud and calm parent who will ‘allow’ your kids to become more independent but can also boost their confidence by allowing them to feel needed and valued in the daily running of the family.

You are in this together - get the family involved: •

Agree to who will do what, when and how. Make sure you make this agreement visual for everyone to see.

What can they do: have a night they are responsible for dinner (do it together), help with laundry, pair socks, set table/ clear table, cut grass, water garden, pack their own holiday bag, keep room tidy, vacuum, clean, empty dishwasher etc.

ENJOY YOUR KIDS OVER THE SUMMER Long days together can often be tense and might end in nagging or arguing – so in order to enjoy your kids over the summer we need to remind ourselves to be present & mindful and become a more focused and conscious parent, where we fully focus on each moment we are with our children.

Be conscious of that you want to spend at least 15 minutes a day with each of your kids where you are 100% there and focus only on them and become aware of what they say, do

Being a focused parent helps us to accept if things haven’t gone to plan, as we can say ‘we tried and we did the right thing’. Mindful parents become essentially better able to manage difficult situations and issues arising in the family and within themselves.

How do we create more family time: Try to make a summer bucket list together before the summer holiday starts of things you want to do for different weather, moods, finance and timing etc.

Having a bucket list will help you to be prepared if things change i.e. if you have planned a bike ride to the park but it is raining then grab your bucket list and see what else you can do.

Plan and agree it: we can all get stuck in our busy lives or in front of screens, so take time to plan what you will do and when as a family, this holiday and every day, e.g. eat together, movie night, bike ride, go for a walk, ice skating, go to the pool, find a market, theatre.

Discuss together what you would like to do and then schedule family time. That way you know it will happen!

Find common ground: it is easier to spend time together when everyone is enjoying themselves: sport, gardening, cooking, movie night, board game etc.

Be present: try to give your family your full focus and attention, leave out chores, worries and screens – be mindfully there!

Join in and be a role model: if you want the family to join in, join in too. Don’t just be on the side-lines watching!

Be Bored: Even though it is great to plan what

to do and activities there is nothing wrong with some good old fashion boredom. Over planning our days can just end with you all getting stressed, tired and could set ourselves up for failure as we might not get all the things done that we promised. So let’s allow daily boredom where our kids have to think up their own activities, no screens or entertaining. Boredom is good; it helps our kids to think more creatively.

Managing Screen Time over the Summer: Last but not least, let’s try to have ‘tech-free’ hours, days or even weeks. Yes it is easy to allow our kids endless hours of screen time as a babysitter and a time out for us but we are not doing them or us any favours. Not only will we feel guilty as we know that it is up to us to manage but also our kids get lazy, cranky and it will be so much harder to get into a routine come September plus we miss great opportunities to get out, learn and have fun together – or just be bored!

Again, it all comes down to pre-planning and agreeing. Before the summer sit down and agree to what managing screen time looks like, what are the rules and when. Why not try to plan tech free days (yes that will include you too). In this discussion you can create the summer bucket list, where you all come up with alternatives to screens.

Educational fun activities: Baking/cooking: make children read out the recipe or try to do it together. Make a double portion and ask the child to divide it by 2. Talk about ml, grams, kg.

Concentration: take some time doing craft or board games for a period of a minimum of 15 minutes. It has to be an activity that enables your child to sit still. Praise them for sitting still and concentrating on the activity.

Reading with young kids: Make sure you read for your child every day and maybe trace the words with your fingers so your child can follow and

get used to reading. When you are out walking encourage your child to notice signs and read them out loud. If your child can’t read you can ask what they think the sign means and then you can read it out. Reading out road names is a great way to learn new words such as street, road, avenue etc. For older kids, allow them to choose some summer reading, magazines or newspapers are a great way to explore new topics. If your first language is not English you can choose a book in your language to read out loud. No matter how old your child is they are never too old for a story.

Numbers: try to familiarise your child with numbers by playing a ‘number-spotting’ game.

Spot numbers everywhere and say them out loud on houses, speed limit signs etc. Support your child in writing out their age. Monopoly is a great way to learn numbers, your child can be the banker and in charge of the money!

Play school: In essence, you can “play” school with your child. It should be in a room without distractions and geared towards learning (i.e. den, family library or home office). Your child can even be the teacher!

Fine motor skills: fine muscle movement of the finger will be needed for drawing, writing, cutting and holding a knife and fork. Do a little bit of craft every day where you support your child to use their fine motor skills. Help them to cut, draw small objects, glue small objects and make beads. Helping you to cut fruit and vegetables is another great way to develop fine motor skills and encourage independent eating habits.

The flotilla will travel through Sunbury, Shepperton, Chertsey and Penton Hook Locks where you will be able to pick up flag in support of my chosen charities MAYOR’S RIVER DAY, and help wave the flotilla SATURDAY 24TH JUNE through. I do hope you will come In the meantime, I am particularly along to watch the spectacle looking forward to the first major including the presentation of oars as they enter the locks. The event of the year, the Mayor’s River Day taking place on Saturday accompanying map shows the route the flotilla will take and the 24th June.

The Mayor’s River Day celebrates approximate times we will arrive at each lock. the Borough’s 9-mile frontage Myself and the Queen’s to the River Thames with a Rowbarge will also be making flotilla of boats that will travel an appearance at Staines-uponfrom Sunbury on Thames to Thames Day on Sunday 25th June Staines-upon-Thames. This year, 2017. I very much look forward to the flotilla will be led by the joining the festivities throughout wonderful Queen’s Rowbarge, the day. Do make sure you join us Gloriana, followed by the Royal on one or both days on this very Shallop Jubilant, Impossible special weekend.

Her immediate realm is the River Thames and London, but Gloriana also celebrates the Commonwealth, which delivers a truly international dimension to her presence.

The crests of 16 Commonwealth countries adorn the outside of the coach. Gloriana is an inspiration for national pride, a showcase for traditional British boat-building and craftsmanship, and a means of encouraging people, especially young people, to engage with the River Thames and the sport of rowing.

Saturday 24 June 2017 Jubilant, the copy of an 18th-century royal shallop, was built by traditional boat builder Mark Edwards at Richmond Bridge Boathouses in 2002 to celebrate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee. She is used for training disabled rowers to join able-bodied rowers in events, ceremonies and regattas on the Jubilant Thames.

Jolly Brit, Former tender to the Royal Yacht Britannia, this boat is now privately owned and has supported civic functions in the past.

FUTSAL FIRST AT STAINES PREP On Monday 8th May Futsal First held their first ever futsal session at Staines Prep School. It has been developing over the last few years at St. Michael’s School, Ashford where children have had the chance to play futsal during lunchtime and take part in after school futsal clubs.

Also over the past 3 years St. Michael’s School has took part in the yearly Middlesex Futsal Competition. The children have been getting better each tournament competing against a high standard of futsal teams that train weekly and play futsal regularly. Now they will get the chance to play and learn futsal each week at Staines Prep’s brilliant indoor hall facility.

Charles Lamb has been able to launch Futsal First UK which has the vision of being a youth futsal club/company in the Spelthorne area.

Futsal First wants to offer different futsal programmes to primary children. The two programmes that are on each Monday are: Mini Futsal- ages 4-6- Children will learn the core skill set for futsal- sole control, dribbling, turning, movement (agility, balance and coordination) match experience and lots of fun!

Development sessions-ages 6-12- Learn while you play, different futsal topics each week, challenges, futsal skill sets such as ball mastery and different psychology methods.

The first session was action packed, with both groups playing mini futsal matches, every child experimenting with the futsal ball and learning about their topic of the day.

In the future Futsal First are looking to offer enough development sessions so that children can then be organised into futsal teams. This will lead to team training during the week and then play futsal matches at the weekend.

Futsal First is also looking to organise girl’s futsal. We want to other development sessions so girls can try futsal. Hopefully this will lead to enough girls playing so teams can be organised.

This year’s project is to provide a safe place for victims of human trafficking

STRAWBERRY AND BANANA ICE-POPS INGREDIENTS 2 cups chopped strawberries 1 banana 1 cup Greek vanilla yogurt Optional: a sweetener such as sugar agave syrup, or honey DIRECTIONS Puree the strawberries, banana, and yogurt in a blender until smooth. If needed, stir in your choice of sweetener to the fruit and yogurt mixture until you achieve the sweetness you like.

Pour the mixture into the ice pop moulds and secure with pop sticks. Place the pops in the freezer until frozen. Release the pops from the mould according the instructions.

If using paper cups, turn the cup upside down and run it over warm water to loosen the pops from the sides of the cup.

QUICK AND EASY TOMATO AND BASIL PASTA SALAD INGREDIENTS 3 large ripe tomatoes (chopped) 1 small red onion (chopped finely) Handful of cherry tomatoes - halved 3 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil 2 tbsp red wine vinegar 1 crushed garlic clove ½ tsp of salt and pepper Ÿ tsp. dried oregano 12 oz. penne pasta (or your favourite pasta) Handful of fresh basil leaves METHOD Put tomatoes, onion, olive oil, vinegar, garlic, salt, pepper and oregano in a large bowl; toss. Let stand at room temperature at least 30 minutes or until tomatoes release their juices, tossing occasionally.

Cook pasta as package directs.

Drain and add to bowl with tomatoes; lightly toss.

Let come to room temperature. Add the halved cherry tomatoes. Add basil; toss. Serve or you can refrigerate for up to 1 day. A lovely Summer evening light supper or a great addition to your BBQ!
