Food parcels giveaway swamped as desperate queue from dawn for aid By RASHAD ROLLE Tribune Senior Reporter rrolle@tribunemedia.net THOUSANDS travelled to the Thomas A Robinson Stadium to collect a box of food and supplies at Island Luck’s IL Cares food drive yesterday, blocking roads for miles in every direction in a bracing showcase of the scale of need in the country. The give-away was supposed to start at noon but kicked off at 8.30am instead because lines of cars began crowding the streets as early as 5.15am. Brian Huylar, the company’s senior facilities manager, said he didn’t know the depth of need in

the country until he saw how many people showed up for items. “I want to think that people are just stocking up,” he said. “I would hate to think that so many people just need food. It speaks volumes, what we saw today.” Mr Huylar said between 3,000 and 4,000 boxes were distributed. By noon all the boxes were gone, yet a stream of cars continued arriving at the stadium up to 3pm, with many people disappointed that they missed out on the donation after waiting hours in their cars. CHRISTIE KEEPING CLEAR OF CANDIDATE SELECTION

By KHRISNA RUSSELL Tribune Chief Reporter krussell@tribunemedia.net

FORMER Prime Minister Perry Christie says he will support whomever the Progressive Liberal Party chooses as the candidate for the Centreville constituency in the 2022 general election. Mr Christie represented the inner-city constituency for 40 years before he was defeated in the 2017 election by then Free National Movement MP Reece Chipman, who has since become an independent representative. Yesterday, Mr Christie said it was critical for him not to become personally involved in the process now underway. To do so, he said, could be easily “misunderstood”,

adding it was important the PLP’s leadership be given the opportunity to lead as they see fit. “I will support whomever the PLP and the leadership of the PLP agrees with, whoever that person is,” Mr Christie said yesterday, when asked if he planned to endorse any candidate in the lead up to the election. “One of the things I try to avoid is getting personally involved because it is very easy for my involvement to be misunderstood. “Then rumours start about my involvement and I was trying at all times to avoid that to give the new leadership an opportunity to lead the party the way they see fit.” SEE PAGE TWO

PEOPLE TRAFFICKERS USING BAHAMAS AS TRANSIT ROUTE By TANYA SMITHCARTWRIGHT tsmith-cartwright@ tribunemedia.net

NATIONAL Security Minister Marvin Dames said there has been an increase in recent years of females being transported through The Bahamas for sexual and domestic exploitation. He made the comments as a panelist in an IDB-sponsored Latin America and Caribbean webinar on human trafficking yesterday. “We in The Bahamas recognise that globally,

approximately 71 percent of enslaved humans are women and girls,” Mr Dames said. “In recent years there has been an increase in female victims being transported and/ or transited through The Bahamas for sexual and domestic exploitation, particularly from non-English speaking countries. “The act of trafficking transcends our respective borders, languages and cultures, which is a strong indicator that all nations in the region must prioritise this dehumanising industry.
