FROM a psychological standpoint, gratitude has been shown to boost happiness while foster ing both physical and mental health. As for Christians, gratitude has quadruple the benefits, in that it also waters their faith and increases spir itual connectedness.
During this time of year, Christians say they are more reflective on the things in their life they are most grateful for. Some say they have taken inven tory and examined the role their spiritual journeys have played to this point. And after this mean ingful reflection, they say they are spiritually refreshed.
Some of them took the oppor tunity to share with Tribune Religion what they feel most grateful for during this time.
“I am so grateful to have had a safe Caesarian section and
delivery of my daughter in Sep tember,” Chasity Ingraham told Tribune Religion.
“Before my scheduled deliv ery date my doctors told me that I would need blood. So, I had put out a call asking relatives and friends to donate to blood in my name. On and before delivery day, I prayed to God to cover me and my baby. My faith was in Him and His word when He promised that He would never leave me nor forsake me.
In the end, the surgery was a success; my baby was fine and I came off the surgery table in good health.”
What’s more, is that Chasity said the surgery turned out so well she did not even need the blood donations.
“This was miracle in and of itself,” she said.
As for Micheala Stubbs, there are countless things in her life she is grateful for, but in the number one spot is good health.
“Every morning God sends, I remind Him of how thankful
I am for allowing me to start anew. ‘Lord, I thank you’ is something I can always be heard saying throughout my day, no matter where I am at or who I am with. Hopefully these words encourage those persons who happen to be next to me when I express it,” she said.
“I am also thankful for the family I was born into and the friends that became my family over the years…the friends that I have now in my 30s; I treas ure those bonds. I grew up in a family that constantly says and reminds each other about how much we love each other. I run into people sometimes and can’t believe the stories I hear about families that don’t really express their love for each other. So, this is something I am extremely thankful for. I am also thank ful for a job that I can count on, as well as a side hustle God has blessed me with. Everyone has ups and downs, good and bad days, but I am thankful for the life I live,” she said.
An underrated blessing that Andrew Moss said he is grate ful for is being able to live in a country that allows him to wor ship his God freely.
“I don’t think a lot of people realise how good we have it as Christians. We can worship our God freely, unlike in some other parts of the world where Christians have to hide. In some places they are persecuted greatly for their faith,” he said.
“Even when we consider our neighbours in the US, Christians are being tried and jailed for their religious convictions.”
Raquel Bowe said she is so grateful to God that her family is re-united and they can spend the holidays together.
“Life has been hitting us hard over the past few months and I kept my faith. I have been trust ing and relying on God,” she said.
“My children’s father had relocated for a few months to work and there was so much uncertainly looming as to when
he would come back and if we would be spending the holidays together. It began to stress me out. I decided one day that I would put our family’s fate in God’s hands. I trusted what ever He saw fit to happen would happen. Fortunately, we are all together and will certainly enjoy the holidays as a family unit.”
As for Michelle Bethel, Christmas came early for her family and she is grateful they have a new roof over their head.
“This year I have a lot to be thankful for. My children and husband are well and happy and we just moved into our new home. We are very thankful that we will be truly ‘home for the holidays’. After losing sev eral family members this year, being healthy is something that I thank God for every day as well,” she said.
REV Stephen Smith and the Ebenezer church family in Rolleville, Exuma are well connected to believers all over the world. Second home owners Russ and Suzie Heib ert, as well as Mark and Heidi Peterson are always excited to worship at the Ebenezer church during their visits to Exuma. The direct flights between Toronto, Canada, and Exuma greatly facilitate their journey. They enjoy the time of praise and worship, the practical sermons and the warmth of the people.
Recently, Pastor Russ Heibert of Westmin ster Chapel at High Park in Toronto delivered the sermon, “Thus Far The Lord Has Helped Us”. Pastor
Heibert spoke of the need for God’s revival in Exuma and Toronto. He said we need help and healing in our families and marriages. Sometimes we may lose heart and hope on this jour ney of life, but what seems like defeat often ends in vic tory. He emphasised the importance of repentance, restoration and remem brance. In attendance was Dwight Hart, Bahamian investment attaché officer posted in Toronto.
Rev Smith, his execu tive team and the members of Ebenezer, said they are determined to touch the lives of people all over the world through benevolence, spir itual guidance, enrichment, development, partnership and prayer.
THROUGHOUT my formative years, I learned three, no four, characteristics of God that have stayed with me my entire life.
I learned He is:
• Omnipotent; all powerful
• Omniscient; all knowing
• Omnipresent; everywhere and in every time, all at once
• Infallible; failure is impossi ble; He is whole in His purpose and motivation
I don’t know about you, but for me these qualities made for a rigorous relationship with God, rife with pitfalls and pit stops. I’ll tell you why.
How possible is it to live the image of God when the very nature of humanity speaks to limited power, finite knowledge, the occupation of only one place in time, and, well, let’s not even mention the fact that we are flawed beings far from perfect?
Knowing these things made me take another look at the
Creator, with the goal of finding traits or attributes that I felt safe in portraying in my own life.
After all, being shaped in His image means that there must be some part of God that we could display on earth in order to win souls for His kingdom. So far, we’ve looked at His gracious ness. Today we want to look at the passion of God.
Passion as an attribute of God has scarcely been mentioned, in
my experience. In fact, the very idea of passion sparks thoughts of the male/female dynamic, a human love ideal and some thing reserved for temporary or transient emotion. But have you considered how passionately we are loved by God? Loved so much so that He would submit to the frailties of humanity, endure a gruesome death just to ensure the possibility of an eter nity with His favored creation.
We always consider and rehearse God’s love for us, but have we ever taken the time to delve into the depth of that love? Let’s consider that the nature of God lacks nothing. He is everything to its fullest degree. This includes the amaz ing passionate love He has for us.
• The love borne from God’s passion makes us kin to Him. See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! (1 John 3:1, NIV)
• The love borne from God’s passion commanded His
sacrifice. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an aton ing sacrifice for our sins (1 John 4:10, NIV)
• The love borne from God’s passion demands reciprocity. And he has given us this com mand: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister. (1 John 4:21, NIV)
• The love borne from God’s passion creates an inescap able bond to His nature and His person. The Bible says that nothing “…in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God…”
The idea of “passion” should not only bring to mind the suf fering of Christ, which we commemorate once a year. Pas sion exists at the very core of the Creator. It is what led Him to create a plan for our redemp tion and rescue long before the foundation of the world was laid. That kind of passion is “a barely controlled devotion” to a particular person or thing.
Consider that we are the object of that undying, neverending devotion. We are the recipient of God’s passion – His passionate love, His passionate forgiveness, His passionate pro vision and protection. In fact, He is so passionate about having us return that love that He is described in the word as being “jealous” if anything replaces Him at the center of our lives! What could be better than being so loved by this God who is full and complete in every thing He does? What could be better than knowing that eter nal and infallible passion exists for you? No love that we expe rience for offspring, spouse, family or friend can match this passionate love bestowed upon us.
To be created in the image and likeness of God is a privi lege that only humanity can boast of - to be His mouthpieces, His beloved body, showing forth His great passion in the earth. God bless you this week.
ARE curses and blessings as simplistic as some people believe? Can generational curses or blessings be related to the words that have been spoken? Do you have to accept what falls in your lap, or can it be broken from you and your family?
These are some of the ques tions Dr Deborah People-Smith answers in her recent book, “Unbroken Generational Curses, How to Be Set Free”.
An Eleuthera native and Grand Bahama resident, Dr Pople-Smith seeks to provide readers with information sub ject to help people caught in the conflict of curses.
Her book quotes pertinent biblical truths on the subject to assist readers in their quest to overcome the battles that have plagued their families for years. She writes about how certain sicknesses and mental illnesses can be traced through blood lines and outlines areas most people are unaware of being affected.
Fellow author Simone Hutson said about the book: “Readers are nudged to consider the pos sibility of ancestral covenants, ownership of ill-fated property, besetting habits, poor choices, and other vices that could have opened doors to the conse quences of curses.”
Dr Pople-Smith aims to iden tify the problems that afflict the innocent who happen to be affected by generational issues. She also seeks to equip readers with information and encour agement through interviews with seasoned professionals and spiritual giants in their ministe rial trenches.
“Unbroken Generational Curses, How to Be Set Free,” said the author, “will help the bound to break free to live a more productive and abundant life as promised in the word of God.”
Bishop Wellington A Williams from the Church of God Fair field, in Grand Bahama, said: “Dr Pople-Smith is one who has persevered tremendously and has found it necessary to bring about the much-needed trans parency on this significant topic to the world.”
Dr Pople-Smith’s humility is very passionate about the subject. She would like to see families identify the recurring issues that may be affecting them.
“There are too many hidden secrets in families that have kept them bound for years,” she said. “I’d like readers to take hold of the truths in this book to help break chains from their lives. In uncovering biblical truths,
you will be propelled into your godly destiny.
“What will also be helpful to readers,” she added, “are the prayers in the book. They help readers to have a heartfelt con versation with God regarding their issue.”
Dr Pople-Smith is married to Baldwin Smith of Freeport Grand Bahama and the couple have six children. In addition to securing copies of her books online in paperback and Kindle format from Amazon, those interested can also contact the author at pople.smith1962@ gmail.com.
By JOANNE M PIERCE College of the Holy Cross(THE CONVER SATION) – President Abraham Lincoln insti tuted the celebration of Thanksgiving as a national holiday in 1863 after the Union victory at the battle of Gettysburg, during the American Civil War. It
was not a new idea – in 1789, President George Washington had proposed a yearly presidential proc lamation of each annual Thanksgiving holiday, but President Thomas Jeffer son refused to issue one after he was elected, as he considered it a religious event. Later presidents followed his example, and the holiday was effectively
discontinued on the national level until Lin coln’s declaration.
Today, Thanksgiving Day has come to be cel ebrated every year on the fourth Thursday of November. As a special ist in Catholic history and worship, I am aware that behind the history and legend of the first Thanks giving lies a rich story
that illuminates the medi eval Christian roots of the holiday.
Since the beginning of Christianity, the Eucha rist, also called Holy Communion or the Lord’s Supper, has been the pri mary worship service for Christians all over the
world. The name itself comes from the ancient Greek word for thanks giving, “eucharistia,” although in part of the New Testament it is also called “the breaking of bread.”
The service came to be called the Mass in West ern Europe, derived from the Latin dismissal rite at the conclusion of the
ceremony: Ite missa est –“Go, it is the dismissal.” The term is still used by Roman Catholics today.
One of the most important medieval Cath olic rituals, the Eucharist involves a special bless ing, called a consecration, of bread and wine. This consecration is rooted

in what Jesus Christ did during the ritual meal he shared with his apostles before his arrest and cru cifixion – the Last Supper. The ritual as a whole is a thanksgiving to God for the offer of salvation from sin in the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. From at least the fourth century, Christians
were expected to attend Mass every Sunday, with a few exceptions, and to rest from work.
But Catholics expressed thanksgiving in other ways, too. One hymn’s first line, “Te deum” – which says, “You, God, we praise” – has been used for centu ries in Catholic worship, frequently on occasions calling for celebration and thanksgiving.
Legend has it that the text was composed by St. Ambrose, a famous theo logian and Doctor of the Church. It is sometimes referred to as the “Ambro sian hymn” in medieval sources.
An early reference to the hymn is in a sixth-cen tury book, “The Rule of St Benedict,” a collection of regulations for monks and nuns. It is listed as one of
the prayers to be recited or sung at Matins, their daily morning communal prayer service.
The Te Deum was often followed by another short hymn: “Non nobis Domine.” Taken from the first line of Psalm 115, “Not to us, Lord, not to us but to your name give glory,” it is another brief expression of thanksgiving to God for whatever event was being celebrated.
Catholics sang the Te Deum as a private or public way to offer thanks to God in a number of situations for centuries. King Philip II of Spain, a devout Cath olic, ordered it sung after hearing of the victory of a Catholic fleet against the Ottoman Turks at sea off the shore of Greece. This Battle of Lepanto in 1571 stopped a Muslim advance into Catholic Europe.
Historical English thanksgiving Medieval England was a Catholic country, and the public religious ritu als celebrated in churches were much the same as those celebrated in Rome and the rest of Catholic Europe, with some local differences. Many of these rituals involved the theme of giving thanks.
In addition, the practice of blessing people, ani mals or crops was also an important part of medi eval Catholic liturgy. Many of these blessing prayers included the theme of thanksgiving as well. One set of blessing prayers dealt with the blessing of ordinary bread.
Across Catholic Europe, bread might be blessed on certain feast days, but in the British Isles, a special ceremony would take place on August 1, when the first of the wheat crop was harvested. This date was called Lammas Day, from the Anglo-Saxon words for “loaf” and “Mass.” From at least the ninth century on, bread from these first grains would be baked
into intricate shapes and brought to church for a special blessing.
However, this bless ing of the first loaves only marked the beginning of the harvest. It was also cus tomary in England, as well as in other parts of Europe, to hold a public festi val when the harvest was done, the “gathering-in” or “harvest home.” Dancing, eating, drinking and other forms of entertainment were featured. This was originally a secular festival, although other festivals of this kind could also be held on other occasions, like weddings.
Public liturgies of thanksgiving could also be proclaimed on other occasions. For example, the English victory over the French at the battle of Agincourt in 1415 was cel ebrated in London by the mayor and populace with the singing of the Te Deum and the ringing of bells at the city’s churches. Later, a prayer service in West minster Abbey was held, attended by the mayor and members of the royal family.
After King Henry VIII broke away from Rome in 1534, the English sovereign became by law the Head of the Church in England. After his death, a reformed English-language liturgy,
compiled in the Anglican Book of Common Prayer, was used throughout the country.
Public worship services of thanksgiving were held annually on certain specific occasions, like the anni versary of the sovereign’s accession to the throne. As in the medieval period, the sovereign could also proclaim a day of thanks giving, complete with the singing of the Te Deum in Latin, to celebrate other important events, like the birth of a royal heir – in this case, the birth of Prince Edward, the future King Edward VI, to King Henry VIII and his third wife, Jane Seymour, in 1537. King James I was the first King of England to be crowned in an English-lan guage ceremony.
However, not every Christian in England was happy with the Book of Common Prayer, find ing it still too influenced by Catholic practice. The Pilgrims were among the English Protestant groups who rejected the Church of England’s more moder ate reforms completely and wished to separate from it to form their own church communities – separatists – as opposed to the Puri tans, who desired further reforms within the Church of England to “purify” it.
(THE CONVERSATION) –
Thanksgiving doesn’t ring in the ear for months on end, unlike another holiday that lies just ahead. Yet readers may remem ber a couple of hymns that roll around each November in church, around the dinner table, or even – for readers of a certain age – in school. One I remem ber well is “Come, Ye Thankful People, Come.” Then there’s “We Gather Together,” or “We Plough the Fields and Scatter.”
Interestingly, for songs associ ated with a distinctly American holiday, none have American origins. “Come, Ye Thankful People” was written by Henry Alford, a 19th-century English cleric who ascended to become dean of Canterbury Cathedral and supposedly rose to his feet to give thanks after every meal and at the close of every day. “We Gather Together” is much older, written in 1597 to celebrate the Dutch victory over the Spanish in the Battle of Turnhout. “We Plough the Fields” was written by a German Lutheran in 1782.
As someone who studies American culture and religious music, I’m interested in the back story of the songs that we have come to take for granted. Some one wandering into a church and picking up a hymnal will likely find a handful of hymns filed under “thanksgiving,” but many more express a general sense of gratitude, such as “Now Thank We All Our God” and “For the Beauty of the Earth.”
Even more hymns fall under the related category of praise –after all, a common response to feeling blessed or rescued is to offer praise to the higher being thought to bestow those gifts.
None of these impulses are uniquely Christian, or even reli gious. But hymns of praise and gratitude have been central to Jewish and Christian worship for millennia. In fact, they go back
to one of the best-known scenes in the Hebrew Bible.
The earliest musical perfor mance mentioned in the Hebrew Bible is “The Song of the Sea,” referring to two songs Moses and his sister Miriam sing to celebrate the Israelites’ escape from Egypt. As Pharaoh’s army pursues the fleeing slaves to the edge of the Red Sea, God opens a dry path for them before clos ing up the sea to swallow the soldiers, according to the Book of Exodus:
Then Miriam the prophet, Aaron’s sister, took a timbrel in her hand, and all the women followed her, with timbrels and dancing. Miriam sang to them: ‘Sing to the Lord, for he is highly exalted. Both horse and driver he has hurled into the sea.’
Jewish singer Debbie Fried man, who died in 2011, wrote “Miriam’s Song,” adapting these lines from Exodus into a modern favourite.
One research project took me deep into the world of the Hebrew Psalms, which originally were sung mainly during ritu als at the temple in Jerusalem. Scholars have speculated for
centuries over the composition and sequencing of these Hebrew poems that form one book of the Bible. The 150 psalms include a great many laments, expressions of praise and gratitude, and quite a few texts that combine both.
Hermann Gunkel, a pioneer ing Bible scholar at the turn of the 20th century, developed a system of classifying the texts in the Book of Psalms by genre, which experts still use today. What Gunkel called “Thanks giving” psalms are texts that celebrate God’s actions to bestow blessings and alleviate affliction in particular times and places: healing from a serious illness, for example. Gunkel’s categories also include psalms that refer to gratitude for more general divine actions: creating the cosmos and the wonders of the natural world, or protecting
the ancient Israelites from for eign enemies.
It’s hard to find a text more brimming with gratitude than Psalm 65, which includes verses very suitable for Thanksgiving Day:
The streams of God are filled with water to provide the people with grain, for so you have ordained it. You drench its furrows and level its ridges; you soften it with showers and bless its crops.
You crown the year with your bounty, and your carts overflow with abundance.
A new idea: Songs about Jesus Though the original tunes of the psalms have been long lost, their words are still a mainstay of religious singing for both Jews and Christians.
Their key role in Protestant churches today owes partly to the Reformation of the 16th century.
During the Renaissance, Catho lics had developed more ornate musical forms for the Mass, including the use of polyphony: songs with two or more simul taneous interwoven melodies. Protestants, on the other hand, decided that unadorned psalms, put into standard musical meters that matched existing tunes, were optimal for church.
Reformation leader Martin Luther loved music and wrote his own hymns with original words that are still popular today, such as “A Mighty Fortress is Our God.” As far as the more austere reformer John Calvin was con cerned, however, the plainer the better. Unharmonized a cappella psalm singing was plenty good for the sabbath, he insisted.
Calvin’s judgment carried the day in New England, which was settled largely by Puritan Cal vinists. In fact, the first book published in North America was “The Bay Psalm Book,” in 1640. It took a century for hymns with new words to start finding acceptance in churches, and even
longer for organs to make an appearance there.
Gradually these restrictions began to soften, even in New England. During the 1700s, hymns began to compete with psalms in popularity. The key innovator was Isaac Watts, a talented poet who wondered why Christians couldn’t sing worship songs that referenced Jesus Christ – since the Book of Psalms, written before his birth, did not. John and Charles Wesley, founders of Method ism, were also inveterate hymn writers.
To modern ears, the difference between psalms and hymns is barely perceptible. Hymns often draw heavily on the images and tropes of the psalms. Even a sim ple-sounding Thanksgiving hymn like “We Gather Together” con tains no fewer than 11 allusions to particular psalms.
Watts, the Wesley brothers and several other hymn writers were part of movements that helped birth modern evangelical Christianity. Some of the most famous hymns of thanksgiving and praise have been popular ided by evangelical revivals over the centuries: “Amazing Grace,” by an 18th-century English curate, and “How Great Thou Art,” the theme song of worldfamous preacher Billy Graham’s revivals.
Over the past 30 years, the booming genre of contemporary worship music, often referred to simply as praise music, has become the standard heard in megachurches and other evan gelical congregations across the world. Not surprisingly, praise and gratitude are inescapable themes in this genre – whether or not they evoke a Thanksgiv ing feast.

UNDER the theme “Bring Back The Glory,” members of Fresh Fire Outreach Min istries recently hosted the organization’s ninth annual Woman at the Well conference.
Since its inception in 2011, Fresh Fire Outreach Ministries’ objective has been to serve as a beacon of hope to people from all walks of life.
The organisation's founder, Minister Felicia Archer, seeks to fulfil this mandate through out reach activities, seminars, revivals and conferences.
“After two years of being unable to host the conference due to the pandemic, the conference
is officially back. The theme for this year’s con ference, ‘Bring back the Glory’, came from Isaiah 6:1. I believe the season has ended for business as usual in our churches. If there is ever a time we need the glory of God, it is now,” Minister Archer told Tribune Religion.
“Many of our churches have great music, padded pews etcetera, but some thing is missing. It is the glory. The Bible says that ‘in the last days I will pour out of my spirit upon all flesh.’ I believe that we have entered into a season of the outpour. We must bring back the glory.”
As this year, for the first time ever, the conference was hosted in both Free port and Nassau.
“I am excited and hum bled to be chosen to carry out this assignment. We encouraged everyone
to come to this event; to bring the sick, oppressed, depressed and rejected. I believe that the Lord will meet them at their point of need because all it takes is one encounter with the Lord to transform their life,” she said.
Intercessory prayer was led by Pastor Delton Ellis, and leading the congrega tion into a time of praise and worship was Minister Davian Chase. Providing special music was Minister Bernadette Turnquest.
Minister Archer said the overall goal for the event was to win souls for the kingdom of God and to see the people of God set free.
