SYSTEM ERROR Virtual learning fiasco as pupils are unable to log into online classes By TANYA SMITHCARTWRIGHT tsmith-cartwright@ tribunemedia.net AFTER weeks of preparation by the Ministry of Education, the virtual learning system crashed on day one for thousands of public education students who tried to log on. Parents, educators and students were up in arms yesterday when they, from their homes, logged on to the ministry’s new and much advertised virtual learning system only to meet the following message: “Undergoing maintenance. Thank you for being patient. We’re doing some work on the site and will be back shortly.” That message could be seen on most of the laptops and tablets used by students, others however, did not get that far as their passwords did not work.

The Tribune contacted Education Director Marcellus Taylor, who admitted there was a problem with the system. “We have a hotline and the people have called,” said Mr Taylor. “There is a challenge that is being worked on right now. The system is under maintenance to resolve the issue. The engineers are working on it and we hope that it will be resolved quickly.” Students are to be in the virtual classroom until 3pm daily, and up to that time on Tuesday, the message on many of their individual screens remained the same. Dianna Adderley, mother of a student at Anatol Rodgers, said it is a crying shame that her child cannot receive a consistent education like all school aged children should. SEE PAGE THREE

‘LOCKDOWNS WORK - BUT NEED TO FIND BALANCE’ By KHRISNA RUSSELL Tribune Chief Reporter krussell@tribunemedia.net

HEALTH Minister Renward Wells yesterday defended the government’s use of lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic saying the tough measures have been proven to work. He said in instances where Grand Bahama and Bimini residents were restricted from moving, the end result saw COVID-19 cases fall drastically. The results on these two islands, he said led to government and health professionals calling for a more stringent lockdown.

However, he said, a balance must be struck so that the economy is not destroyed. He also skirted around answering a question about whether another two-week lockdown was in the works for New Providence where case numbers are steadily increasing. “I would say that that’s not the facts,” Mr Wells said when asked to respond to critics who have repeatedly said that lockdowns do not work. Among these is Progressive Liberal Party leader Philip “Brave” Davis who recently said the measure only “pauses” the situation. SEE PAGE FOUR

BISHOP Simeon Hall has made a plea from his hospital bed for Bahamians to take COVID-19 seriously after he contracted the disease. The co-chair of the Bahamas National Commission on Marijuana said he went to the hospital last Friday to be seen for some other

BISHOP SIMEON HALL ailment and was told he had caught the coronavirus. “By now you might have heard that I am very ill

in hospital,” Bishop Hall, pastor emeritus at New Covenant Baptist Church, said in a voice note released yesterday. “I came in hospital to check on something else, only to be told that I had also contracted the COVID virus. “I thought to call on the body of Christ to pray for me. Pray that the Lord will lift me up and I will stand in the congregation of the Lord one more time, but SEE PAGE FOUR
