can sometimes be a solitary activity, but many believers feel it is more powerful and effective when done in a group. However, some people don’t have the opportunity to pray alongside others more than once a week when they attend church. That’s why, our Bahamian readers feel, it is important to have a circle of friends and family that prays together.
“I believe it is important. In our family group chat we have a prayer worship thing going on. And I am not talking about the quote pictures people would usually send to each other. Each and every one of us every morn ing would take the time out to pray for the group,” said Iyea sha Dean.
“This is our unique way of staying connected to each other and to God. It can be as simple as ‘Thank you, God’, or a long paragraph; we can expect one each day. Sometimes I even take it as far as singing a praise and worship song. I guarantee you; every day is much better when it starts with prayer,” said
Christina Johnson said having friends in general is immensely important; to simply talk to, laugh and socialise with. Praying with them is even more special.
“I am not sure if persons are weirded out by it, but this can be the most therapeutic thing to do with a close friend, praying. The power of having a friend that would stop what they doing to just simply pray with you is a great and priceless feeling. And just like I do it, I want them to feel comfortable calling on me to do the same,” she said.
“Prayer is something avail able to any and every one, and that is the sweet joy of it. No matter what the situation, we can all pray; we all have that access to God.”
Christina shared an experi ence she had with a friend.
“(My friend) was new in start ing a business. We were already on a FaceTime call, just having a girl talk. And while speaking on a next line, she had received some good news, and I watched her drop to her knees in prayer to thank God. She was so thank ful and couldn’t help herself, she just kept thanking the good Lord. And through the line, I felt her joy and joined her in the praise. Now if that isn’t power ful, I don’t know what is,” she said.
Like Christina, Gina Coakley said if you have friends to party with, to socialise with and do
business with, then most defi nitely you should have a circle of friends you can pray with.
“Now, the friends you party with may not be the same per sons you pray with, but those prayer partnerships are a must. You should have like-minded friends who can share the same faith with so that they can encourage you and uplift you when you are feeling down and out,” she said.
“I have a group of ladies in my friend’s circle who I know share my faith and can speak to me from a spiritual perspective. This is important because they can offer insight and wisdom in areas I may not be seeing clearly. God can also use your friends to speak through you and vice versa. It’s one thing to pray for yourself, but there is such a blessing in hearing
someone else pray for you and your needs,” said Gina. Tiffany Rolle said she has made a habit, along with her significant other, to pray before having a meal together.
“Yes, this may sound like something normally done. But in a relationship, you go on dates, sit down and eat; do you always remember to pray? This may not be the case all the time. What I have purposely done is make it my business to remem ber to have him or me pray; we take turns. We pray for our selves, our bond, our families, the strangers sitting next to us, anything that comes to mind. So, if you see my partner and I out on a date, when that food arrives, you are sure to see us bowing our heads in prayer. It’s a connection that I adore and love,” said Tiffany.

Today, the Bible is often invoked during public debates about immigration. From former US Attorney General Jeff Sessions to a group of 2,000 rabbis, people have referred to the Bible to explain their dif fering positions on immigration and refugees. Several specialists in biblical studies have spoken and written about what the text says on the topic.
One thing is clear: Migration matters in the Bible. Stories about it are common – from the Book of Genesis, where the patriarch Abraham obeys God’s command to leave his homeland in Mesopotamia, to the Moabite woman Ruth, who migrates to Bethlehem out of love for her Judean mother-in-law, Naomi, to the Jews’ forced migration to Babylonia.
But these many voices do not necessarily boil down to a single theology or ethical framework. As a scholar of the Hebrew Bible, I study how themes of migration mattered in the making of scripture, as well as in how the text has been circu lated, debated and interpreted by readers across the globe.
Discussions about migration are always complicated, because migrants’ real-life experiences do not easily translate into simple bureaucratic categories.
Modern societies defined by the ideas of citizenship and borders tend to classify modern migrants into legal binaries, each with its own rights and restrictions: resident vs. non resident, documented vs. undocumented, immigrant vs. nonimmigrant. Ancient Israel, too, relied on legal categories to try to make sense of migration.
The Hebrew Bible’s legal pas sages discuss people who have come to Israel from other places and how they should be treated. The Book of Deuteronomy,
for example, prescribes a law that protects poor and destitute workers from being exploited, no matter if they are fellow Isra elites or not.
There are two Hebrew terms that recognize different kinds of strangers in the community, with differing status and privileges.
The first, “ger,” can be trans lated as “resident alien.” In other words, it is a legal cat egory for people who are not “citizens,” in the language used today, but who have permission to reside there. In the Hebrew Bible, the term does not dis tinguish between voluntary immigrants and forced refugees.
People in the “ger” category are embraced as part of the Isra elite community. For example, law in the Book of Numbers dictates that the “ger” are eligi ble to participate in a sacrificial ritual to the God of Israel, just like the locals.
The Book of Numbers further protects the “ger” by stipulat ing that there will be one law for both the Israelites and the immigrants throughout the
generations. Whether locals or not, they are equally subject to the rules about offerings and other standards for holiness. When the community makes an offering as atonement for sin, the immigrant population is also considered forgiven.
On the other hand, migrants called “nokri” – commonly translated as “foreigner” – have a more restricted social status. Deuteronomy prohibits Israel ites from charging interest on loans to a fellow Israelite, but not to “nokri.” Likewise, the law commands Israelites to for give each other’s debts every seventh year, but not debts of “nokri.”
The Hebrew Bible’s view on strangers is not just about deal ing with others. Biblical ideas about foreignness are forged through the Israelites’ own experiences and collective mem ories about being strangers.
In the books of Exodus, Leviticus and Deuteronomy, a main reason to protect strangers
is repeatedly given: Because Israelites themselves were “ger” in the land of Egypt.
The many meanings of for eignness are also explored in biblical literature from after the Babylonian exile of the Jews. Some groups returned to the land of Judah, some remained in Babylon and some had never left in the first place.
The Book of Esther, for example, concerns the life of the diaspora community living in Persia. The story unfolds mainly through the actions of Queen Esther, who carries a dual iden tity as a Jew and as a Persian, and its central themes deal with the struggle to survive in a for eign land.
Meanwhile, the protago nists in the books of Ezra and Nehemiah are repatriates who had previously lived in Meso potamia, but encountered a
new sense of foreignness upon their return. Nehemiah Chap ter 13 describes Nehemiah’s shock when he learns that Jews had married women from sur rounding cultures, and half of their children only spoke other languages.
The Bible speaks about migration with many different voices – even beyond its pages. Migrant communities across the globe have continued to read and interpret it through the lens of their own experiences ever since, opening up new possibili ties for understanding.

Sunday, the Bahamas held a State Service of Remembrance and Thanksgiving for the late Queen Elizabeth II, who died on September 8 at the age of 96 after 70 years on the throne.
The sermon was given by the Rev Laish Boyd, Bishop of the Diocese of the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands, at Christ Church Cathe dral on the occasion. Here are some excerpts:
Today we gather to acknowledge the pass ing of the Queen of this Realm, the Common wealth of the Bahamas, and the Queen of Ter ritory of the Turks and Caicos Islands, Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, to thank God for her amazing life and tremen dous contribution, and to acknowledge the acces sion of her son, our new titular head, King Charles III.
When Elizabeth became queen, she was Queen of the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) and 32 other countries.
At the time of her death, she was queen of only 15 of us. The Bahamas remains a constitutional monarchy. It is a form of governance that no gov ernment of the Bahamas has moved to change or seriously discussed chang ing. This is not a criticism, since governments have a right and a responsibility to set priorities – and, in my humble opinion, with all that we have had to face in the last 49 years, reviewing our status as a constitutional monarchy could hardly be termed a priority. The point is that until we move to become
a republic, we remain what we are, and the Brit ish monarch remains our head of state…and thus the need for this service today.
We must be careful of how we discuss the busi ness of monarchies and republics since the Baha mas will one day be a republic. It is inevitable. Let me explain what I mean: When a country takes on political inde pendence, like we did in 1973, it begins a natural and organic evolution along a path which must lead to full autonomy and ultimate national iden tity. This has nothing to do with loving or hating the mother country or the monarchy; it has to do with national, cultural and constitutional matu rity. One cannot put a time limit on this. It has to come in the fullness of time. I cannot say when it will come for us.
Some persons have said that the passing of Queen Elizabeth should or will or has forced the repub lican discussion to take place. I think that that is completely the wrong approach, and we should not feed on this or be moved by it. The discus sion should happen at the appointed time and as a part of our good and sen sible stewardship of our national patrimony.
Elizabeth Alexan dra Mary did not - and Charles Philip Arthur George does not - exercise
executive or operational or juridical power over any country. Their head ship is titular or symbolic, an official position with few, if any, actual powers. Now, some people may not care for monarchy, which is their right and which we must respect.
However, human com munity needs entities, traditions and models which provide structure and identity, which con nect with the past - the full variety of that past - which shape development and consciousness, and pro vide some ideals to which to aspire. These are all bigger than the individu als who may be royals, larger than their current shortcomings and larger than the misdeeds of gen erations past. For you see, just because one lawyer did something bad to you yesterday, or to your great grandfather 150 years ago, does not make all lawyers or the entire legal profession bad. His toric structures are what they are and do have some ancient and modern value, as they have faults, ancient and modern.
And note that I am a firm believer in repara tion, that is, the collective and cumulative wealth and advantage of today seeking to address the wrong, inequity and injus tices of the past in a fair, impartial, appropriate and generous way.
The strength of a mon arch’s leadership lies in the demeanour and image of the monarch, what he/ she exemplifies or repre sents to the people, and in his/her ability to call forth what is noblest and best in national development, and in the behaviour of world leaders, and in the
vision that the monarch inspires in the lives of ordinary men, women, boys and girls. At the end of the day, this is what is best in all leaders and in all systems.
Additionally, Queen Elizabeth took on this role and did so well from the beginning as a female. Have you ever thought of the steep integration curve that a 25-year-old woman would have had in 1952 in the UK, much less in the rest of the world? It was a world that was unapologetically a man’s world, a patriarchal world. The UK itself is a country that is steeped in tradition going back thousands of years - which the events from her death to her funeral demonstrated so beautifully. I was glued to my television, and I affirm that no one does tradi tion and ceremony like the British. No one. What a steep curve she had to mount!
Our most gracious Queen and Governor took on the mantle in that kind of world, set her course and was an exceptional monarch, no matter what her gender, exceptional. And she became the most well-known female on this planet.
That is why her passing is such a moment in world history….another reason for our service today.
Queen Elizabeth II was all of this and more. She was an imperfect mortal just like the rest of us. She was born into a certain set of circumstances, in a particular time and place. The premature death of her father, King George VI, thrust her into the role of British Monarch at the age of 25. What a tremen dous responsibility. Few of us could have borne that weight, few could have survived that.
Now let us pause to talk about what monarchy is. Monarchy is a form of government. The earli est monarchies recorded date back to Sumer and Egypt around 3000 BC. In a monarchy there is a king or queen at the head. There are 43 monarchies
of various types left in the world today, and the United Kingdom is one of them. It is a constitu tional monarchy where the Queen formerly, and now the King, and the Royal Family, take on a
variety of official duties: ceremonial, diplomatic, representational and advi sory. However, ultimate executive authority over the government lies with an elected parliament, just like here in the Bahamas.
It was into this life that Elizabeth Windsor came. She did not create this ancient institution called monarchy into which she was born, but as an adult she chose to live in it and
to exercise her best stew ardship in it.
I say again that this good lady was no ordi nary monarch. In fact, we can say that she most extraordinarily lived and represented humility and service to all at every level of society from every country of the world.
In this regard, look at the reaction and out pouring since her death: people from all countries and every walk of life talking about what she meant to them, how she impacted them, what she represented in their lives. And, again, everyone says how she was so accommo dating, making everyone feel at ease and welcome.
Secondly, consider that 500 foreign dignitaries travelled to attend her funeral. Why would so many world leaders want to be present? World lead ers and UK leaders found her to be a welcoming and affirming presence. She was a fountain of wisdom and a trusted resource that all found valuable.
These two things bear out what Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev and Rt Hon Justin Welby said at her funeral:
“She was joyful, present to so many, touching a multitude of lives.”
“People of loving ser vice are rare in any walk of life. Leaders of loving service are still rarer. But in all cases those who serve will be loved and remembered when those who cling to power and privileges are long forgotten”.
Friends, here is a life from which we learn a lesson - like we learn something from every life. As we consider the late Queen’s life, let us con sider the life we have left, and ask ourselves a few questions:
1. Can I be described as a person who puts service above self? Or is my service, my heart of service, based on certain condi tions: “I only serve at certain times; I only serve certain people; the conditions better be right and I
better have my payoff or get my advantage, or else no deal…”
The heart of service which really changes circumstances, touches people and makes a dif ference is far too lacking in our world, in our insti tutions and even in our communities and homes. Do not get me wrong: there is a lot of this heart out there, but there needs to be so much more of this kind of heart!
What does Jesus say, “if anyone would come after me, let them deny themselves, take up his/ her cross and follow me.” (Matthew 16:24)
2. What do others say about my faithfulness?
Can we be depended upon to be faithful to people and to commit ments, no matter what? You may say, “Bishop, what’s the big deal?” I do what I feel like and if I don’t feel like, I don’t do..
This attitude may some times have its place, but it is problematic generally. It will cause us to sell our selves short, and to wound our own souls, because we have not been true to many of the people and the things that we claim to be, and that we know to be, important. Imagine, we set the priority listand then pay no attention to it.
Can this be said of us?
When any one of us walks into a room or into a situation, we have one of two identity options: either we are a part of the problem, or we are a part of the solution. One who affirms is always a part of the solution, one who makes things and people better. Let others be happy to see us because we have a positive out look, because we see the good in others, because we lift up every person or circumstance with affir mation, vitality and life… because…every cup is half full and not half empty.
