Jehovah’s Witnesses resume door-to-door ministry

Itused to be a common sight: Jehovah’s Witnesses walking in pairs or groups through neighbour hoods on a Saturday, handing out reading materials as they go from door to door.

But this practice has been basically non-existent over the last two and a half years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Jehovah’s Witnesses were forced to curtail their door-to-door ministry and cease engaging face-to-face with residents.

This was an unprecedented move. Jehovah’s Witnesses have been going from house to house, preaching their beliefs, with out interruption for more than 100 years, through the Depres sion, two World Wars and global unrest, but COVID-19 demanded a different response.

However, this month marked the return of this trademark form of ministry and the Jeho vah’s Witnesses are once again out and about in our communities.

The decision to resume their door-to-door ministry marks the complete restoration of all prepandemic in-person activities for the nearly 1.3 million Jehovah’s Witnesses in the 12,000 congre gations in the United States. Houses of worship (called King dom Halls) were reopened on April 1, witnessing in public places resumed on May 31. and

in-person conventions are again being planned for 2023.

Members in the Bahamas are enthusiastic about getting back on the streets and ministering to people.

“We in the Bahamas are among the many who are excited to get back out there. But more importantly, we are excited to share the wonderful message of hope with our neighbours,” said Mark Taylor, spokesperson for Jehovah’s Witnesses in the Bahamas.

James Bridgewater, who has been a Jehovah’s Witness for 55 years, said nothing is better than sharing his faith heart-to-heart with others.

“One is able to discern peo ple’s reactions, how they truly feel about what they are hearing, and they are better able to sense that we care for them. Our very presence in the neighbourhood … is a witness in itself,” he said.

As for new convert Vanessa Knowles, who was baptized during the pandemic, she will have the opportunity to fully experience what ministering door-to-door is like.

“We have all had an eventful two years and faced trials,” she

said. “My goal is to help people come to an accurate knowledge of what this all means for our future, according to God’s word the Bible.”

The pandemic forced Jeho vah’s Witnesses to quickly pivot to virtual meetings and conven tions while conducting their ministry exclusively through letters, phone calls and virtual Bible studies. This has led to growth in meeting attendance and the number of congregants, with more than 400,000 newly baptised Witnesses joining the ranks of 120,000 congregations globally in just the first two years of the pandemic.

“We believe that the early decision to shut down all in-per son activities for more than two years has saved many lives,” said Robert Hendriks, US spokes person for Jehovah’s Witnesses.

“We’re now ready and eager to reconnect with our neighbours once again – person-to-person, face-to-face. It’s not the only way that we preach, but it has historically been the most effec tive way to deliver our message of comfort and hope.”

The return to in-person min istry coincides with a global campaign to offer an interactive Bible study programme availa ble in hundreds of languages and offered at no cost. The course

VANESSA Knowles (cen tre) and Zovier Rolle (right) of Nassau resume their door-todoor ministry.

comes in the form of a printed book, online publication or as an embedded feature within the organisation’s free mobile appli cation, JW Library. Released in late 2020, the interactive study platform combines text, video, illustrations and digital work sheets to help learners of all ages.

“This study programme is designed to match the learning style of the 21st-century stu dent,” said Mr Hendriks. “We’re excited to begin sharing it with our neighbors as we return to making personal visits.”

The importance of a circle of praying friends

Praying can sometimes be a solitary activity, but many believers feel it is more powerful and effective when done in a group. However, some people don’t have the opportunity to pray alongside others more than once a week when they attend church. That’s why, our Bahamian readers feel, it is important to have a circle of friends and family that prays together.

“I believe it is important. In our family group chat we have a prayer worship thing going on. And I am not talking about the quote pictures people would usually send to each other. Each and every one of us every morn ing would take the time out to pray for the group,” said Iyea sha Dean.

“This is our unique way of staying connected to each other and to God. It can be as simple as ‘Thank you, God’, or a long paragraph; we can expect one each day. Sometimes I even take it as far as singing a praise and worship song. I guarantee you; every day is much better when it starts with prayer,” said

Christina Johnson said having friends in general is immensely important; to simply talk to, laugh and socialise with. Praying with them is even more special.

“I am not sure if persons are weirded out by it, but this can be the most therapeutic thing to do with a close friend, praying. The power of having a friend that would stop what they doing to just simply pray with you is a great and priceless feeling. And just like I do it, I want them to feel comfortable calling on me to do the same,” she said.

“Prayer is something avail able to any and every one, and that is the sweet joy of it. No matter what the situation, we can all pray; we all have that access to God.”

Christina shared an experi ence she had with a friend.

“(My friend) was new in start ing a business. We were already on a FaceTime call, just having a girl talk. And while speaking on a next line, she had received some good news, and I watched her drop to her knees in prayer to thank God. She was so thank ful and couldn’t help herself, she just kept thanking the good Lord. And through the line, I felt her joy and joined her in the praise. Now if that isn’t power ful, I don’t know what is,” she said.

Like Christina, Gina Coakley said if you have friends to party with, to socialise with and do

business with, then most defi nitely you should have a circle of friends you can pray with.

“Now, the friends you party with may not be the same per sons you pray with, but those prayer partnerships are a must. You should have like-minded friends who can share the same faith with so that they can encourage you and uplift you when you are feeling down and out,” she said.

“I have a group of ladies in my friend’s circle who I know share my faith and can speak to me from a spiritual perspective. This is important because they can offer insight and wisdom in areas I may not be seeing clearly. God can also use your friends to speak through you and vice versa. It’s one thing to pray for yourself, but there is such a blessing in hearing

someone else pray for you and your needs,” said Gina.

Tiffany Rolle said she has made a habit, along with her significant other, to pray before having a meal together.

“Yes, this may sound like something normally done. But in a relationship, you go on dates, sit down and eat; do you always remember to pray? This may not be the case all the time. What I have purposely done is make it my business to remem ber to have him or me pray; we take turns. We pray for our selves, our bond, our families, the strangers sitting next to us, anything that comes to mind. So, if you see my partner and I out on a date, when that food arrives, you are sure to see us bowing our heads in prayer. It’s a connection that I adore and love,” said Tiffany.

LGBTQ-friendly church OK with getting Southern Baptist boot

WHEN her teenage daughter came out as a lesbian several years ago, one of the first things Caroline Joyce did was to Google, “Can you be gay and be a Christian?”

The family was attending a con servative Southern Baptist church in the Greensboro, North Carolina, area that considered homosexual activity to be sinful.

“We had been taught one thing, but we knew our daughter loved Jesus,” Joyce said. “She was very open with us during her struggle to figure out what was going on with her.”

And Caroline and her husband, Chuck, began their own struggle.

Their daughter and a younger sib ling found a gay-friendly church, College Park Baptist Church in Greensboro. They "started attending with our blessing because we knew if she continued attending our church, she’d be totally turned off to God,” Caroline Joyce said.

The College Park church found itself in the news last week when the Southern Baptist Convention's Exec utive Committee voted to remove it from its rolls because of its “open affirmation, approval and endorse ment of homosexual behavior." That action came 23 years after the congre gation itself voted to leave the SBC, but according to the Executive Com mittee, it had remained on its rolls until now.

But the very thing that prompted the Southern Baptists' disapproval is what attracted the Joyces themselves to College Park. The parents eventu ally followed their children's path and joined the congregation. They even moved from the suburbs to the city of Greensboro to be closer to the Col lege Park church, its activities and the friends they made there.

“It really makes a difference when you hear from the pulpit and hear in the hallway that God loves every body,” Caroline Joyce said. She said their daughter eventually grew up to become a minister, as is her wife.

The Rev Michael Usey, the lead pastor, said that Southern Baptist offi cials actually identified the church's ethos correctly.

"It’s good when people reject you because they understand clearly who you are," he said. “The irony is, they're excluding us for not excluding people.”

The Executive Committee vote didn't take leaders of the congrega tion completely by surprise.

They'd been receiving registered letters from Southern Baptist officials in recent months, explaining that the church was still listed on its rolls and seeking more information, Usey said.

“At first they were kind of demanding we clarify our position on homosexuality,” Usey said. The Baptist State Convention of North Carolina, the Southern Baptists’ state affiliate, sent similar inquiries, he said.

Usey said church leaders decided not to respond, and to let the SBC expel it if that was the decision.

“I just don’t really want to engage in that,” Usey said. “There’s hungry people in Greensboro. This is what God calls us to, to do something for the children who are half a mile from our building who are hungry.”

ROAD TRIP REVELATIONS: A PASSENGER’S PERSPECTIVE – PART II

The “D” word

Everyone dreads the “D” word when it comes to road trips. I would really like to read some of your minds to see what you assume that word to be.

“D” could be damage –the wear and tear on the vehicle that happens due to sustained use. Tires may blow out, fan belts may pop, the engine may overheat and seize up, the air conditioning may stop working....you name it!

And haven’t some of us been damaged? Due to mishandling or misuse, we all have our war stories about being hurt, harmed or endangered because of certain life decisions we made or because of some unplanned event along the way. We can all share of the dings, and dents in our psyches and spirits because we hap pened upon someone whose only language was to take from, or to use or even, to abuse us. The wounds and the scratches can be physical scars, lack of trust, emotional stagnation, all the physi cal, mental, emotional and/or psychological cuts and bruises we receive in transit to our final desti nation. Just as this type of damage doesn’t really stop the journey, life’s damages don’t really stop us. They are frustrating reminders that we started out clean, fresh, naïve; and some where in the aftermath of a decision, life scuffed or rubbed us the wrong way. Either we took too many uncalculated risks, or innocently believed in someone who didn’t have our best interest at heart.

“D” could be detour – a rerouting within the trip due to some blockage. We never know what will happen on a road trip –particularly a long one. A storm may cause branches

to fall in the path, or even flooding, animals may decide to extend their crossing, an accident can prevent moving forward along that chosen route... the list is endless.

What could a detour be for us? An unplanned pregnancy, loss of income or employment, a pan demic that hits suddenly? Please, we could be here all day! The thing is detours, are unplanned and can occur without notice, or warning. I just lost a sister last week. A complete detour! I could not have planned for the devastation that her loss has caused our family. Nights are spent in tearful reminiscence of her great life and amazing contri bution. A detour can be the announcement of a sudden illness, or evic tion...again – the list is too many to mention.

What do you do in the face of a detour? This one requires quick thinking, critically plotting a new course of action. It needs resilience and determi nation to reach the final destination, no matter what. Often times, our detours threaten to throw us off course completely! It then takes a lot of will power, and resolve to keep the final destination in mind.

“D” could be a dead end. Nobody wants this! A dead end is something akin to a full stop for a road trip. There is either some house, barrier, or permanent fixture that says you cannot move forward or you have to set the car in reverse. The thing is: you cannot will a dead end to change. It means “Stop! You either

stay here or turn and head back in the same direction for a bit!” In other words, you have to go backward for a time because moving forward is no longer an option.

Isn’t this just like life? No one wants to expe rience the dreaded stagnation syndrome or reality in reverse. But, sadly, it does. Sometimes,

life can hit you with such a blow that you have to revert and reset. Life seems to have taken one step forward only to take about five steps back. For a time, you’re either forced to go backward or you are stuck in one place.

Damage, detours and dead ends are possible on any road trip just as they are, unfortunately,

inevitable in real life. The secret to conquering the dreaded Ds is to remem ber you have what it takes on the inside to come out a victor! Through Christ, your power, your ingenu ity and your gifts are all you need to ace the Ds!

God bless you this week!

PAGE 44 ● Thursday, September 29, 2022 OBITUARIES THE TRIBUNE The ‘fathers of the church’ died around 1,500 years ago, but these ancient leaders still influence Christianity today

(THE CONVERSA TION) Nearly 60 years ago, in October 1962, Pope John XXIII con vened the Second Vatican Council. For the 21st time in the Catholic Church’s history, the pope gathered bishops from around the world – several thousand of them – to address mat ters of church doctrine and practice.

Today, Vatican II is remembered as a land mark council that has shaped Catholic life in modern times. Leaders agreed to reforms, such as greater use of local languages in the Mass, to reinvigorate the church’s mission in a changing world.

In the council’s official documents, however, the bishops frequently cite spiritual guides who died more than 1,000 years before: the fathers of the church.

The spiritual and theo logical authority of the fathers is recognized not only by Catholics, but also by other Chris tians, including Eastern Orthodox and Protes tant communities. Not all agree on the same list of church fathers, yet Chris tian leaders have been deeply influenced by the fathers’ teachings, from medieval theologians and Protestant reformers to Pope Francis today.

And while there are no women among the “fathers,” the “desert mothers” – influential religious women from the same era – have also left their mark.

Spiritual fathers

As a scholar of early Christianity, I am often asked about the origins of the concept of a church father.

In Christianity, the hon orary title “father” comes from Greco-Roman and biblical ideas about the father as the head of the family. The Roman “pater familias” was responsible for the welfare, educa tion and leadership of the family. He was also considered a priest or reli gious representative of the household.

In the Bible, the firstcentury Apostle Paul speaks of himself as a spiritual father to other Christians. The apostles and bishops of the church were treated as believ ers’ “fathers” insofar as they were responsible for preaching, teaching and leading worship.

Evolving idea

Early Christians started using the title “father” for bishops, but by the fifth century, it was also applied to some priests and deacons.

Over time, theologians began to refer to a specific group of “church fathers” to support their positions amid debate – starting in the fourth century, with the Greek bishops Euse bius, who wrote a history

of the Christian church’s first three centuries, and Basil of Caesarea, who lived in what is now Turkey. St Augustine – the Catholic bishop in Roman North Africa who became famous for his “Confes sions” – frequently cited the fathers’ teachings to support his arguments during controversies with theological opponents. The fathers’ position in the church was refined in the fifth century by a Gallic monk named Vin cent of Lérins. Not all ancient Christian writ ers had equal authority, he wrote, but the views of the true fathers could be trusted because their teachings were consistent, as if they formed a council

of masters “all receiving, hold ing and handing on the same doctrine.”

By the modern era, four traits were used as criteria to distin guish fathers of the church: 1) orthodox or right theological teachings on essential points, in accord with the church’s public doctrine; 2) the holiness of their life; 3) the church’s recognition of them and their teaching; and 4) antiquity, meaning they lived during the early Christian era that ended around the seventh or eighth century.

The title is distinct from the later honourific “doctor of the church,” for spiritual teach ers who have made significant contributions to Christian doc trine in any period of history, although some theologians hold both titles.

Unlike the fathers of the church, who are all male, four

women are included amongthe doctors: Teresa of Ávila, a mystic famous for ecstatic visions; Catherine of Siena, who persuaded Pope Gregory XI to return the papacy to Rome from Avignon; Thérèse of Lisieux, known for her “little way” of holiness by small acts of love; and Hildegard of Bingen, a medieval German nun, scientist and composer.

Desert mothers

Modern scholarship has also drawn attention to the impor tant influence of women on the church during the age of the fathers.

For example, the fourth-cen tury fathers Basil and Gregory of Nyssa, who were brothers, considered their older sister, Macrina the Younger, to be the greatest theologian among them. Gregory composed a

treatise in her honor, “The Life of Macrina,” which depicts her as a true philosopher. A “conse crated virgin” who pledged her life to the church instead of mar riage and family, Macrina led a women’s religious community and was renowned for her holi ness, teaching and miraculous healings.

Her paternal grandmother, Macrina the Elder, was also a great teacher and leader who suffered persecution for being a Christian in the late third century. She was responsible for passing on the teachings of important theologians, such as Origen of Alexandria and “Gregory the Miracle-Worker.”

In addition, women exercised leadership in the growing move ment known as monasticism. During the first five centuries of Christianity, many women fled from urban cities to the desert

to commit themselves to lives of prayer, fasting and virtue. Known as the “desert mothers,” they were sought after for their wisdom.

Their words or sayings were collected and preserved for centuries. For example, Amma Theodora, a spiritual mother of a community of women near Alexandria in Egypt, was famous for saying that only humility, not ascetical practices such as fasting, could overcome the temptations of the devil. Likewise, “The Life of Mary of Egypt” was written about a humble, penitent woman who lived in the desert for 47 years. She was considered a model of humility, and her story was often told during Lent, a period when many Christians perform peni tential practices.

The fathers’ future

Today, church leaders con tinue to rely upon the fathers’ teachings as authoritative sources of wisdom. Pope Fran cis, for instance, often refers to Vincent of Lérins to explain how Christian doctrine devel ops over time, like a seed taking root and growing into a tree.

History has shown that Chris tians frequently disagree on matters of doctrine, and they always will. In those moments, future leaders may look to the fathers as sure-footed spiritual guides.

King Charles, defender of faith: what the monarchy’s long relationship with religion may look like under the new sovereign

(THE CONVERSATION)

– When Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne in 1953, she took on the role of “defender of the faith” (Fidei Defensor in the original Latin) – a title first granted to Henry VIII by the Pope in 1521. He subsequently broke with Rome and became the first head of the Church of England.

In the past 70 years, the role of religion in British public life has evolved significantly. As King Charles III assumes the role of monarch, his relationship with faith will also come into focus, and may look different from his mother’s.

At a memorial service for the Queen in Belfast cathedral, the new king took care on his arrival to meet representatives of all religious groups in the province.

It is expected that there will be a full, similar presence of religious representatives at his forthcom ing coronation. Although the Archbishop of Canterbury and Anglican clergy will remain the principal celebrants, other Christian denominations and non-Christian religions are expected to have a place in the ceremony.

Since 1945, two concurrent social processes have changed Britain’s relationship with reli gion. Increased secularisation, meaning that just over 50 per cent of the population now have no religious affiliation. And increased pluralisation, mean ing the number of non-Christian religions has grown – their followers amount to about 9 percent of the population.

The monarchy has responded to these changes in two ways. First, as Prince of Wales in the 1990s, the now-King mused aloud whether the monarchi cal title defender of the faith should not be reinterpreted as “defender of faith”. This is

understood to have been his reaction to the growing pres ence of non-Christian religions in the UK, as well as signalling a more relaxed and inclusive attitude towards non-Anglican Christians.

Second, at a Lambeth Palace ecumenical meeting hosted by the Archbishop of Canterbury in February 2012, the Queen, speaking as supreme governor of the Church of England in her diamond jubilee year, said:

The concept of our estab lished Church is occasionally misunderstood and, I believe, commonly under-appreciated. Its role is not to defend Angli canism to the exclusion of other religions. Instead, the Church has a duty to protect the free practice of all faiths in this country.

In practice, this was thought to confer a role on the Church of England distinct from its previous concern to defend its exclusivity. At the same time, it was welcome to many of the members of non-Christian religions whose presence had grown in the post-war period, and also accepted by the Angli can hierarchy, which seems to

have encouraged the Queen to take the initiative.

And at a recent meeting with faith leaders, the King remarked that, as monarch, he intends to protect the diversity of religion in Britain, and to “respect those who follow other spiritual paths, as well as those who seek to live their lives in accordance with secular ideals”.

The monarchy and religion

The King’s constitutional links with the Christian churches derive from the 16th century Protestant reformations, which took different forms in England and Scotland (then separate countries). Towards the end of the 17th century, when threatened by Catholic states, legislation banned Roman Cath olics, or (until 2013) anyone married to one, from succeeding to the throne.

Roman Catholics and all Protestant groups not belong ing to the Anglican Church of England or the Church of Scot land were deprived of most of their civic freedoms. These were finally restored, after some ear lier relaxations, in the late 1820s

of the UK prime minister, after a selection process run by the Church of England.

THE THEN Prince of Wales after a Maundy service at Windsor Castle.

In Scotland, the greater autonomy of the Church of Scotland means the King has no similar relationship. How ever, he will appoint a Lord High Commissioner every year to attend and observe the proceedings of the Church’s annual General Assembly, and will occasionally attend him self in the same capacity. At the coronation in 1953, that year’s moderator (clerical chairman) of the Church of Scotland was the sole non-Anglican present among the officiating clergy.

King Charles and the faith

– and last of all for the Roman Catholics in 1829.

The present position is that a British king cannot be a Roman Catholic, must be “in com munion with” the Church of England, and swear that he is a faithful Protestant. Following the 1707 Act of Union between Scotland and England, he must, after accession, swear to “invio lably maintain and preserve” the Presbyterian form of church government established in the more autonomous Church of Scotland. This was one of Charles III’s first acts as king.

The King’s coronation consists of a service of Holy Commun ion, and a rite during which he is anointed and crowned by the Archbishop of Canterbury, pri mate of the Church of England.

In coronation oaths prescribed by parliament in 1689, the King will swear, among other things, to “maintain and preserve invi olately” the establishment of the Church of England and the rights and privileges of its clergy.

The monarch has been supreme head of the Church of England since 1558. The mon arch appoints all the senior clergy in England on the advice

The new King’s coronation is still some months’ away, but the changing face of religion in the United Kingdom, combined with his and his mother’s past comments, suggest that the title Fidei Defensor will be inter preted in more inclusive and positive ways.

He has said as much himself in his recent comments to faith leaders after ascending the throne:

“The beliefs that flourish in, and contribute to, our richly diverse society differ. They, and our society, can only thrive through a clear collective com mitment to those vital principles of freedom of conscience, gener osity of spirit and care for others which are, to me, the essence of our nationhood. I am deter mined, as King, to preserve and promote those principles across all communities, and for all beliefs, with all my heart.”

Pope urges Italians to have more children, welcome migrants

POPE Francis travelled to southern Italy on Sunday to close out an Italian church congress that coincided with Italy’s national election, and delivered a message that hit on key domestic campaign issues including immigration.

Neither Francis nor his hosts referred to the vote during the open-air Mass, though Italy’s bishops conference had earlier urged Italians to cast ballots in the eagerly watched election that could bring Italy its first farright government since World War II.

At the end of the outdoor Mass in Matera, Francis spoke off the cuff asking Italians to have more children. “I’d like to ask Italy: More births, more children,” Francis said.

Italy has one of the lowest birth rates in the world and Francis has frequently lamented its “demographic winter.”

Far-right leader Giorgia Meloni, who campaigned on a “God, family and homeland” mantra, has also called for Italy to reverse its demographic trends by proposing bigger financial incentives for couples to have children.

Francis also weighed in on a perennial issue in Italy, recalling that Sunday coincided with the Catholic Church’s World Day of Migrants and Refugees. Fran cis called for a future in which “God’s plan” is implemented, with migrants and victims of human trafficking living in peace and dignity, and for a more “inclusive and fraternal future.”

He added: “Immigrants are to be welcomed, accompanied, promoted and integrated.”

Meloni and her centre-right alliance have vowed to resume a strict crackdown on migrants coming to Italy via Libyanbased smugglers. The centre-left Democratic Party has among other things called for an easier

path to citizenship for children of newcomers.

The Mass was celebrated by a protege of Francis, Cardinal

Matteo Zuppi, who is head of the Italian bishops’ conference and has a long affiliation with the Sant’Egidio Community, a

Rome-based charity known for its outreach to migrants and the poor.

The 85-year-old Francis appeared tired during the visit, which was scheduled before Italy’s snap elections were called and came a day after he made a separate day trip to the Umbrian hilltop town of Assisi. Francis has been using a cane and wheelchair this year, due to strained knee ligaments that make walking and standing difficult.

His trip to Matera, the south ern Basilicata city known for its cave dwellings, underwent a slight, last-minute change due to storms that belted much of the Italian peninsula over night: Originally scheduled to fly by helicopter Sunday morn ing from the Vatican’s helipad, Francis instead flew to Matera by jet from Rome’s Ciampino airport.

POPE APPEALS TO THE YOUNG TO SAVE THE PLANET, FIND PEACE

POPE Francis, visiting Assisi, the birthplace of his namesake saint who was close to nature, called on Saturday for “courage” in abandoning fossil fuels and lamented that older gen erations didn't know how to protect the planet and secure peace,

He told young people he was pinning his hopes on their efforts in working to save the planet and to make the world’s economy more attentive to the poor.

During his brief visit last Saturday to the hill town in central Italy, Fran cis spoke to a gathering of some 1,000 young people, some of them young econo mists. Others are involved

in efforts including startups, focused on helping the environment.

The participants came from all over the world.

Among them was a woman who recounted to the pope how she and her hus band were helped to flee Afghanistan after the take over of the Taliban last year by an organisation called The Economy of Francis, which is inspired by the life of St Francis, with his atten tion to the poor and others in need.

The pope said a world economy is needed that expresses “a new vision of the environment and the Earth.”

“There are many people, businesses and institutions that are making an ecologi cal conversion. We need to

go forward on this road and do more,” Francis said.

The pontiff cited an urgent need to discuss models of development.

“Now is the time for new courage in abandoning fossil fuels to accelerate the development of zero- or positive-impact sources of energy,” Francis said.

He told the young people: “Our generation has left you with a rich heritage, but we have not known how to protect the planet and are not securing peace.”

He lamented a lack of “creativity, optimism, enthusiasm,” and told young people that “we are grateful to God that you are here. Not only will you be there tomorrow, but you are here today.”

POPE Francis signs a letter at the end of the ‘Economy of Francesco’ meetings with young entrepreneurs for a more inclusive and human economy, in Assisi, Saturday, Sept. 24, 2022.

ANGLICAN DIOCESE HOSTS HEALING CONFERENCE TO ‘RESTORE PEACE’

TheAnglican Diocese of the Baha mas and the Turks and Caicos Islands began a new initiative in 2019 by hosting the inaugural Healing Conference.

In 2020, the entire world was affected by COVID-19 hence, the conference was cancelled. In 2021, technology was used to host the second annual Healing Conference virtually via the Zoom platform.

The topics were timely and were related around the coronavirus and its effects.

This year, the conference has been reduced to one day due to the fact that the pandemic is still not over.

On October 15, the third annual conference will be held in-person at Super Club Breezes and virtually for the Family Island and overseas participants.

The theme for the conference is “Restoring Our Peace, Regaining Our Freedom.”

In recent times, the Diocese said, citizens and residents of the Bahamas have experienced two serious events, Hurricane Dorian and COVID-19.

“For most of us, these (events) caused an overwhelm ing disturbance of peace in our lives, through the loss of our earthly possessions and loved ones, as in the case of Dorian, and through sickness, illness and death as a result of COVID-19. Some of us continue to deal with the effects of both incidents; therefore, our theme encour ages us to restore our peace and regain our freedom. This is done firstly, by acknowledging our condition and sec ondly, by having faith in Jesus Christ that he will provide all our needs,” the Diocese said.

Speakers for the conference include the Rev’d Canon Basil Tynes, rector of St Matthew’s Anglican Church, New Providence; the Rev’d Marie Roach- Hepburn, rector of St Jude’s Anglican Church, Grand Bahama, and Ellen Romer, lay minister with the Pro Cathedral of Christ the King, Grand Bahama.

The Diocese said participants can expect healing and deliverance throughout the day, culminating with a cele bration of the Holy Eucharist and laying of hands to close out the conference.

“There will be anointed teaching, praise and worship, praying and ministry. There will be opportunities for physical healing, inner healing and deliverance ministry. The conference is designed to be a powerful experience,” the Diocese said.

Prayer ministry leaders, prayer group members, organi sation leaders in the church, lay ministers and the general congregation are invited.

The day pass is $100 and the virtual Zoom conference is $25.

The deadline for registration is October 11.
