The new recording studio, Stefphen explained, was designed with the late artist’s personality and legacy in mind.

“This project was a collaborative effort, we wanted everything in this studio to be a representation of Japheth. The mural that is on the wall fea tures the actual notes from some of his big gest songs. The bold, bright colours repre sent his personality. He was always so full of life, he represented Christ boldly and that is what we wanted to capture,” he said.

The vision of Life Changers, he added, is to holistically empower people to positively impact and influence every sphere of society with the message, authority and power of the kingdom of God.

“We believe that the spirit of excellence that was displayed by Japheth will also be displayed by the artists that grace the halls of the studio. We believe that the music that will come out of that studio will transcend generations and break records,” he said.

The Life Changers ministries is a non-denominational fellowship that embraces the entire Bible as the word of God. Stefphen said the church’s lead servant pastor, Apostle Valentino Williams, started the ministry in April of 2003, following the core values of empowerment, excellence, integrity and faith.

She expressed “grave” concern about the high number of school dropouts and described the situation as a serious crisis during her budget contribution in the House of Assembly.

“The thought is that students that are strug gling would embrace the advice of verse two. Due to embarrassment and fear of being teased or looked down on, many students do not seek clarification from teachers concerning what they don’t understand. Instead, they suffer in silence, being completely lost in class. It would be a joy to know that students would overcome this fear, understanding that nothing is wrong with them because they do not grasp as fast as others. The main message of the song is to stay in school.”

The song was first released in 2014 and gained traction locally. However, Mr J believes that with the educational crisis the Bahamas and region is facing today, brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, it was important to being the song back.

With the compulsory age of education being five to 16 years old, Ms Hanna-Martin urged parents to ensure students attend school.

“Next is the upcoming single ‘Too Much Man Dead’, which decries the level of decay that our society has come to. We need a solution to all the senseless acts of murder that have gripped thisFornation.”moreinformation, contact mrjreggae@ gmail.com.

“After recent nominations at this year’s 2022 BGMA Awards and Marlin Awards, I have been networking with artists and discussing future projects. Currently, I’m in discussions with LaRed, a gospel duo from Puerto Rico and first-time Marlin Awards winners at the 2022 Marlin Awards. Works are in the pipeline to further the reach of the gospel in the region and internationally,” he said.

Last month, Minister of Education Glenys Hanna-Martin stressed the importance of both parents and the government ensuring schoolage students attend school.

The singer-songwriter, who is adamant about his music always delivering a socially conscious message, said this was a great time to rerelease the single as way to encourage kids to keep their heads in the game and focused on what is important.Thechildren, most of whom were subjected to virtual learning over the past two years, have lost their way and given up completely on their educational pursuits, he said.

THE message to stay in school never gets old and will always be relevant. It is the reason why, as Bahamian kids have made their way back into the classrooms for a new semester, gospel artist Gesner “Mr J” Dalmond decided to rerelease his single “Stay in School”.

Back in June, the minister said that thousands of students have still not returned to campuses since schools were reopened after the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gospel artist Mr J reminds kids to ‘Stay in School’

In the meantime, Mr J is planning on releas ing more socially conscious music.

It’s a message not only being touted by the concerned and conscious artist.

The minister’s remarks were made at the commencement of the training workshop for the newly appointed attendance officers in the Ministry of Education.

“The inspiration is the same today as it was back then. Education or exposure to informa tion is definitely the key to success. I want to inspire students to pursue education so that they may become productive and independent members of society,” he told Tribune Weekend.

She called for “all hands on deck” to address theMsissue.Hanna-Martin also revealed that her ministry had planned to reach out to those stu dents to either get them back in the classroom or, depending on the students’ ages, encourage them to take advantage of summer educational programmes being offered by the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI).

Dissatisfied with her skin and hair type not being represented in most embroidery pattern books, this seamstress set out to take matters into her own hands. She tells Cara Hunt about creating her own book with all-inclusive stitch designs to celebrate people’s differences.

“The designs in those books were not represent ative of my features and experiences, and I had to modify the white-centered designs to look like me. I had to learn techniques and source materi als and fibres to reflect what I wanted to create. In doing so for my own personal creative expression, I knew others could benefit from that knowledge,” she said.

Representation

“These are the designs that we want to stitch. These are the stories we want to tell. I hope makers will discuss, embrace and celebrate this book with me,” Bianca told Tribune Weekend.

“My mom, Glenda Lightbourne, sewed for herself and for us as we grew up. She had a fantastic fabric stash filled with lush fabrics that she accumulated over time. She had a pattern collection of Vogue cou ture designs from the 60s and 70s by top designers. Her sewing for us and others was a part of our grow ing up. On a similar note, Bianca said it is also important that authors, publishers and distributors who have previously ignored minorities see this book.

While Bianca dabbled a bit in the craft growing up, it was not until she had her own daughter that she really began sewing in earnest.

GOOD

Of course the answer varies greatly, depending entirely upon the type of plant being grown. I have provided a link that may help the veggie gardeners out there to deter mine proper plant spacing. When it comes to landscape plants, many landscapers are directed to go by the spacing provided by the landscape architect. I have to say this: a lot of plans are created by people in an office, not people on the ground. Many landscape architects aim for immediate effect and they tend to not consider the growth rate and sizes after several years of growth. Many office designed landscape plans lean towards overcrowding to please the customer immediately, but down the road this can serve to increase maintenance needed and decrease plant health due to over crowding and spacing plants too close to each other. A landscape is a long term project, and the best quality designs often leave ample space to allow plants to grow in to their natural form more than the template designs will typically offer, particularly the ones submitted by the Florida and New York based designers that so often get hired for larger projects in our Bahamas. Plants never stop growing in our climate. This in itself leads to increased maintenance in the landscape. Not only is plant spac ing defined by type of plant, it is also dependent upon the size being installed. When smaller plants are

plants are often recommended to be planted 18” for a 3 gallon pot, 24” for a 7 gallon pot, 30-36” for a 15 gallon, 36-48” for a 25 gallon, etcetera, BUT all of this is dependent upon the type of plant being installed, and is by now means set in stone.

predictable in their eventual size, and standards do hold more true. Don’t you love the ambiguity of the garden design process? I enjoy the challenge as each situation may demand a slight adjustment to typical standards and spacing.airflow, competition for water, nutrients, and root space must be considered. The beauty is in the results. Don’t overcrowd the garden, but do not let me or anyone else dic tate your design, but there are always rules of thumb to pay attention to. Most plant growth is predictable under ideal circumstances. Don’t waste money on plants if you’re not investing in your planting media, i.e., it’s all about the roots. As always, I wish you happy gardening.

used, there is a tendency to plant close, to fill quickly. This isn’t always the best route. The best advice comes from those that have experience over a decade or more of man aging a landscape, those are the folks that can tell you how big something may get over a number of Hedgingyears.

Budget can often determine plant spacing, and if the budget is slim, plants may be spaced too far apart and take longer to fill in the space as

desired. Higher budget installations often space too close. Somewhere in there is a happy medium, but again, if one is planting a bougainvillea for hedging, or an areca palm for privacy, spacing will vary. There is no one answer for most anything in gardening. The photo provided shows areca palms in a 25 gallon pot spaced 4 feet on center from each other. Spacing too close creates a competitive situation for the plants where each may be competing against the other for nutrients, water, and root space. Too far apart and the desired effect may not be met. As with most anything, flexibility is a must in gardening, and one persons ideal maybe another’s dislike. There is not one catch all answer. In veg etable gardening, it is a bit simpler as there is a determinate growth period and a determinate growth span, and so therefor it is more cut and dry as to how far to space plants. Fruit trees and landscape trees are quite

day, gardeners. As many of us prep our gardens for the vegetable growing season, it is important to keep in mind plant spacing, to provide enough room for each plant to grow to their full potential. A common question is “How far apart should I plant these?”

Maxwell Taylor, who was born in Nassau in 1939, is a master printmaker, painter and ceramicist. His work is strongly influenced by human rights issues, illustrating momentous events for eman cipation, equal rights and job equality. He had a natural bent for humour, helped by the film’s clever editing, and gave Hepburn good advice on the art of comedy.

In 1940, a busy year for Grant, he played a hardheaded, insensitive newspaper editor opposite his ex-wife and journalist Rosalind Russell in His Girl Friday. Strong chemistry between the two fine actors produced a good film. He was then reunited with Irene Dunn in My Favourite Wife – another success, before playing a Virginian backwoodsman in The Howards of Virginia - a disastrous failure and prob ably Grant’s worst film performance. His final film of 1940 was the much lauded The Philadelphia Story in which he played the ex-husband of Tracy Lord –the Katherine Hepburn character. Hepburn wanted Grant and, together with James Stewart, they made the film the classic that it remains today. Both Hep burn and Stewart received Oscar nominations, with Stewart winning the Oscar for best actor. Grant was bitterly disappointed not to have received at least an Oscar nomination.

The film got rave reviews but lost $350,000. It is now a Hollywood classic. Later that year he appeared with Hepburn again in the romantic comedy Holiday. It also did not do well commercially, and Hepburn was labelled “box office poison”. Grant, however, was more popular than ever – completely unharmed by the failure of his films with Hepburn.

But then Grant was loaned out to Hal Roach’s

“The best thing he’s done in a long time.”

“The wrong man got the Oscar for ‘The Phila delphia Story’. Grant got better performances out of Hepburn than her long-time companion Spencer Tracy ever managed.”

Cary Grant’s first film with RKO Pictures was playing a raffish Cockney swindler in George Cukor’s Sylvia Scarlett (1935) opposite Katherine Hepburn – the first of four films he made with her. She wanted him and felt he was the perfect foil for her. He was and it was the film that launched his super-star career. As a freelance actor his first venture was The Amazing Quest of Ernest Bliss (1936). It was a critical and financial failure and prompted Grant to reconsider his decision to be a freelance actor and demand large fees. Luckily, his next venture Suzy (1936) opposite Jean Harlow and Franchot Tone was much more of a success, and he signed joint contracts with both RKO Pictures and Columbia Pictures, which allowed him to choose roles which would best suit him. His Columbia con tract for four films over two years gave him $50,000 for each of the first two films, and $75,000 for each of the others. When You’re in Love (1937) was the first of the popular Columbia pictures.

studio for Topper (1937), a comedy distributed by Metro Goldwyn Mayer, and the wildly funny film became his first major success. He paired with the talented comedienne Constance Bennett and they played a wealthy married couple who create havoc in the world as ghosts after dying in a car accident. It was a perfect pairing and Grant followed it with another huge success in The Awful Truth (1937) with Irene Dunn and Ralph Bellamy. The film’s director Leo McCarey did not particularly like Grant but he encouraged him to improvise and to use the natural comedy skills he had learned in vaudeville. The two films established Grant as a leading Hollywood star in lightweight comedies.

The following year Grant finally did get an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his performance in Penny Serenade (1941). At the time he was in a relationship with Barbara Hutton, one of the wealthiest women in the world with a $50 million inheritance from Frank Winfield Woolworth. They discussed having children – they married in 1942 –the same year he became a naturalised United States citizen. He also legally changed his name to Cary Alexander Grant. He was already one of the wealth iest Hollywood stars and had properties in Beverley Hills, Malibu and Palm Springs and refused any financial settlement in a prenuptial agreement with Barbara Hutton. They lived in a mansion on Bel lagio Road in Bel Air but divorced in 1945, although always remaining the best of friends. He dated Betty Hensel for a while after his divorce, and then married Betsy Drake on December 25, 1949 – the co-star of two of his films. It was the longest of his marriages and ended on August 14, 1962.

Grant continued to star in comedies. In 1949, he starred with Ann Sheridan in I Was a Male War Bride – where he appeared dressed as a woman wearing a wig and a skirt. It was a hilarious film and became the highest grossing film for 20th Century Fox, earning $4.5 million. He was again the highest paid actor in Hollywood, much in demand and earn ing $300,000 a picture.

Grant continued to play slapstick comedies. In 1947, he played opposite Myrna Loy and Shirley Temple in The Bachelor and the Bobby Soxer, and later that year with David Niven and Loretta Young in The Bishop’s Wife – another commercial and criti cal success. The following year he played a neurotic character, again with Myrna Loy, in the comedy Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House. The film lost money but Grant’s performance as a frustrated advertising man was praised as one of his best screen portrayals. In Every Girl Should Be Married (1948) he appeared opposite Betsy Drake (his third wife) and Franchot Tone playing a bachelor who is trapped into marriage by Drake’s conniving char acter. He ended the year as being the fourth most popular film star at the box office.

reception, and even his role opposite Deborah Kerr in the romantic comedy Dream Wife was a financial failure in 1953. He was considered for the lead in A Star is Born – but the part went to James Mason. He thought his film career was over. He was fed up with playing slapstick comedy parts and decided to leave the industry. He had no idea that his career would blossom in a completely different direction – that of a romantic leading man. His best years were still to come.

He remained popular and in great demand. In another busy year, 1942, he participated in a threeweek tour of the United States to help the war effort and appeared with Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra in a short propaganda film Road to Victory. He then played a convict on the run in The Talk of the Town (1942) with Jean Arthur and Ronald Colman; a for eign correspondent opposite Ginger Rogers in Once Upon a Honeymoon (1942); and a submarine war film Destination Tokyo (1934). In a macabre comedy Arsenic and Old Lace he played a manic member of a bizarre murderous family but thought it the worst performance of his film career. He simply could not contend with the film’s direction or subject matter. None but the Lonely Heart (1944) was a different matter and he won his second Oscar nomination for his role opposite Ethel Barrymore and Barry Fitzgerald. Set in London during the Depression it was arguably his finest film performance. He didn’t, however, win the Oscar.

history

Once England had adjusted to the death of George VI, it was an exciting time. People were eagerly looking forward to the coronation, and songs about the new Queen were constantly on the radio. I did not have access to a television set, but I remember the song by Dickie Valentine:

For those not yet old enough to vote, there was A A Milne’s famous Buckingham Palace ditty that had six verses. The first verse was: “They’re changing guard at Buckingham PalaceChristopher Robin went down with Alice.Alice is marrying one of the guard.

‘A soldier’s life is ter rible hard,’ says Alice.”

“In a golden coach, there’s a heart of Drivinggold through old London town She’s the sweetest Queen the world’s ever seen Wearing her golden crown. As she drives in state through the palace gate Her beauty the whole world will see In a golden coach there’s a heart of goldThat belongs to you and me.”

As Coronation Day approached, thousands of people flocked to London, picked places where they would have a good view of the parade back to Buck ingham Palace and whole families slept on their chosen spot, some for longer than a week.Iwas lucky. I had a

prepared to wait a long time. Conversations started and quickly spread to the whole bleacher. I came away with the feeling that England had put the memories of World War II behind it and replaced them with a brave new world. To the applause of the others, a family sang, “There’ll always be an England, and England shall be free”. Before it was finished, we had all joined in, singing “If England mean as much to you as England means to me.”

When the horse-drawn carriages came into sight, we were all disap pointed that the roofs were up, with only one exception – Queen Salote of Tonga. She had come to London to see and be seen and was not let ting any rain stop her. For that, she got a ‘tsunami’ of applause – sur passed only by Elizabeth II.

big bull shark and win, or do the poor tourists even realise that is an option? I bet they are told in whatever briefing they may or may not have that there is nothing to worry about.

If there no respect for the natural flow of the environment.

How do you “control” the numbers of a species like a bull shark; they swim kilometres every day. You just have to look at the website Ocearch that tracks sharks, mostly the great whites, but there are a few bull and tiger sharks in there…these creatures swim everywhere; you can’t control their numbers, and anyway, sharks are protected! Had we all forgotten that detail? Why are they protected? Because their numbers are becoming dan gerously low worldwide. We, in the Bahamas, are blessed with a prolifera tion of marine life. So many fish in our sea, so many turtles in our sea, since we have the intelligence to protect them too.

I admire and respect the sea and those who inhabit it. I believe in cau tion and I don’t think there is enough caution in these haphazard highdensity tours.

What is it about the sea that makes so many people cast caution to the wind and do really dumb, not thought-out and untrained things in the Bahamas? Why do people think that they can come face-to-face with a

multiple sharks is very unlikely; the reports are varied. We don’t know what really happened.

“‘Aww, isn’t she precious?’, people keep saying to me, and of course they would as that’s my name, Precious, and I’m cute!

The bull shark is listed as “nearly threatened”. Humans are not part of their menu, but they tend to eat any thing and are scavengers of the sea. They don’t grow to be enormously big (7-11.5 feet on average) and they live up to 16 years. They usually live in highly populated areas (tropical shorelines). This is precisely why many shark experts consider them to be the most dangerous shark of all. We know that there are bull sharks around there already, right? I believe the previous shark attack on Rose Island was a bull shark, or two or even three. I am told an attack with

My precious!

In fact, there is never any real follow-up. A man was killed by dogs three weeks ago. “Oh, really? You mean the shark attack? No, hang on, Her Majesty the Queen just died, and did you see her grandsons talking to people putting out messages and flowers…and Megan and Harry were there… hang on, dog attack? Shark attack?”Likeevery other bothersome incident involving animals in the Bahamas, where people lost their lives, where things can be improved for safety sake, these will simply get brushed under the carpet once again… what a big carpet we must have. These are all people problems, they are not resolved by euthanasia, culling or other inventive means of killing. People problems need to be resolved by people.

So, if you have lots of fish in the sea you will probably have sharks in that sea.The bull shark is to one who eats anything, but he likes there to be plenty. Our blessing is what is enticing the sharks to our waters.

By The Bahamas Humane Society

We, with constant chumming d feeding of absolutely anything, any where, are compounding the problem. Then to add to the fact that we are literally sending out gilt-edged invita tions to the shark population, we tell sweet, innocent and unprepared tour ists to jump in the water. How many people are in the water at a time, is there somebody watching out? I know I find it tricky to watch over six people and some of these boats have

Come in to the BHS to meet me or call 325-6742 for more information. I look forward to meeting you!”

But killing off sharks is not going to solve a “people problem”. People have created this problem and now people have to resolve the problem, and killing is not the solution.

I am so tired of the “same old, same old”. Why is the only solution to any animal problem to kill them? Are people around here so egocentric that the only possible solution is to eradi cate the problem, even it the problem is part of that great big circle of life?

I am hearing pathetic theories that sharks should be culled, or that their numbers have to be controlled. How do you propose doing that for starters, and have we forgotten that they are also a big tourist attraction?

How do we solve this problem? Clearly the easiest response is stay out of the sea. As I said last week in my article, if you go on safari, you do not walk through the tall grasses in a gangly group chucking out bits of meat indiscriminately saying “here kitty, kitty” to the lions. If you did, you would not last long, guaranteed.

Animal matters

Other than having an amazing art teacher in high school – Julie Knowles – who really encouraged her and fostered her interest in art, Nikita had no formal training in the traditional sense. Still, her love for art grew and evolved, mainly inspired by the natural beauty of her surroundings as she grew up on Long Island, but also thanks to her mother and grandmother.“Neitherof them were artists, but my Mama (grandmother) would plait straw for weav ing, and she was able to braid in any weave or design. From her I learned the importance of both technique and focus. My mother did upholstery and interior design, always having an eye for detail. Observing her, I learned colours, palettes and the way different materi als work together. You can see all of their influences in my own work today,” Nikita told Tribune Weekend.

“Part of the immediate inspiration was the lack of beautiful décor items in the local market. There’s such a small pool of items and so many of them cater to neutral tastes. I love colours. I love being able to follow a story when I enter a room. Decorating a room with pieces of art to create a particular environment or that reflect who you are in your personal space tells a story to anyone who enters that space. It can be very interesting.”

“My pieces tend to be combinations of beauty and function. I use resin to create eve rything from wall art that evokes the mystical sea or the evening sky, to coasters, to specialty design pieces such as wall panel motifs. I’m currently working on a Christmas collection, which will include ornaments and other décor themes for the season,” she said.

Nikita has taken her love for the ocean and its myriad colours and her passion for art and fused them together to create a business ven ture she calls Adonis Luxury Home Décor.

“The idea for Adonis has long been in devel opment. I started working to make the dream a reality in 2020, right before the pandemic started,” she said.

Currently, the artist is working on establish ing an e-commerce home for Adonis.

“We live in a world where pretty much eve rything that we own has been mass-produced on a conveyor belt in some factory and we go about our day and see other people with the exact same things we have. Everything feels generic rather than original. This is a major selling point of art and crafts created with using resin.”Shecommended the organisation Hustle Her for allowing her to appear at their pop-up show at Breezes Hotel, where she was able to show case her Adonis work for the first time.

The medium she has chosen to work in for most of her Adonis pieces is resin. She explained resin art is created when epoxy resin is combined with various colour pigments and additives to produce a blend of unique patterns and textures. In her resin work, she uses sea glass, wood and metals, in addition to the epoxy and pigments.

In the meantime, people can check out Adonis Luxury Home Décor at several pop-up events this coming holiday season.
