World droughts have expanded in time and his tory throughout the world. In Africa the northern deserts expand southward while droughts, lack of rain create massive regional dead zones where man and beast cannot survive. The very shores of North Africa are eroding by 50 meters a day, with the salt waters of the ocean win ning the day. South Africa is attempting to drill over 5,000 fresh water sources to supply their citizenry with needed water, finding out that the water table has been depleted due to lack of rain. Wildlife is under siege from both the natu ral elements as well as the encroachment of humanity. There have been attempts to apply technology to find a solution to this continent’s problems, but desalinisa tion of the surrounding sea water is far too expen sive. A poor continent will continue to ship farther into poverty of its people and natural resources. The United Nations has found many examples of criminal ity in Africa, where toxic and man-made wastes have been buried in the sands of Africa illegally, and where these toxins have and con tinue to poison whatever fresh water Africans have. No messing about there – straight to the point.Furthermore, that same person said they would support the move, saying: “The only challenge with us moving to a republic is that I can’t, as much as I would wish to do it, I cannot do it with out your Interestingconsent.”phrase there – as much as I would wish to do it. It certainly shows backing for the idea.
PICTURE OF THE DAY
Last week, he puts a referendum on a republic on the agenda. This week, he brushes it off saying it’s not the time, even when he was the only one who put it forward.Perhaps he remembered that he has invited the new king, King Charles III, to The Bahamas for next year’s 50th anniversary of independence and thought better of how it looked to sug gest a referendum on a republic right after the Queen’s passing.

Now how about the opinion expressed in today’s Tribune? Well, this time, the person giving their view said: “I do not think it necessary to begin that conversation while we remain in our period of official mourning. Once we have paid our final respects, there will be time enough in the future for such discussions.”Thenonsense of course is that these two opinions come from the same person, our Prime Minister, Philip “Brave” Davis.

EU has experienced unheard of droughts so extreme that major rivers are drying up revealing Europe’s history and deny ing Europeans fresh water. Massive forest fires burn presently in Spain, Portu gal and southern France, destroying historic forests and many people’s liveli hoods. Extreme heat has been with us always, but with a population explosion as Europe has experienced in the past hundred years the demand for mere basics of life such as water has put the EU under great pressure. The very water Europeans drink has been affected by aged pipes, low water sources and the introduction of micro plas tics pollution. Is the water Europeans drink safe to consume? Statistics tell
a bugaboo for all involved. A word in the Constitu tion has to be redefined. A similar attempt was made during a previous exercise that would have caused a possible redefinition of the word “sex”, if Bill No. 4 had beenUppassed.untilthat time sex was male, female or an activity.
If we are to progress as a nation, how ever, it would be useful to debate facts that exist rather than stoke fears over things that do not exist.
Latin and Central America have some of the freshest water supplies in the world, and yet the most threatened. Criminals inject toxic waste into the Amazon, burn both legally and illegally the forests of the Amazon in mass burn ings, creating farm land for crop and livestock. The fresh water of Brazil is being depleted, while in Argentina a decades old drought continues to grow. Chile is thinking about selling its waters to its neighbours suffering from drought while attempt ing to create some form of water conservation system. Many of these nations are too poor to initiate water purification and mainte nance programmes.

North America has both an abundance of fresh water while certain regions are lacking, and in historic drought situations such as Mexico, California, Arizona and the mid-west. Various attempts to conserve what water they have have failed due to extreme weather patterns annually applied. To further threaten water supply is the historic chal lenges of aged pipelines, micro plastic pollution and regional governments who let their population down by not investing in new water technologies and dis tribution methods, from source to home. America has shown a true lack of imagination and planning with regards to its future water and resource needs, failing to invest multi bil lions of dollars into aged systems that simply do not work. I WOULD like to write about a crisis we are and probably will experience sometime in our lives. Something many of us take for granted, that of water availability and purity. There are 37 nations glob ally who are experiencing extreme water stress today. Seven of these nations are Caribbean. Water Resource Groups estimate that by 2030, if no action is taken, with the projected popula tion and economic growth rates, water demand will out pace globally supply by 40%.There is a dire situation existing today, effecting every aspect of our lives, but not fully explained to the citizenry for many reasons. The commod ity known as natural clean fresh water (H20) may join the dodo bird on a list of rare things. What’s going on here, you may ask.
It has become obvi ous to many that the very way we view our water supply must change. Aus tralian citizens have dealt with a lack of fresh water for decades, putting rain collection systems on each roof, showering and flushing toilets only once during the day, water ing lawns sparingly. Waist not-want not. At a time when washing your hands is essential(pandemic), the very thought of man aging how long your tap flows, showering instead of bathing, filling your pool, watering your lawn for hours, flushing your toi lets often (1.6 gallons, but depending on manufacturer as much as 5-7 gallons).
EILEEN DUPUCH CARRON, C.M.G., M.S., B.A., LL.B.
6. How can we maintain natural sources of water such as the Arctic, South Poles? Can we manipulate water into energy? A dream not yet realised. One can only hope. The five nations with the largest fresh water supply are Brazil, Russia, USA, Canada and China. All these nations face mas sive water management challenges of their own, while attempting to assist other nations in need. One can only help one self before extending their hands out to others in need. Will water become the new world currency of the future? One can live without money, but with out water life ends. Some nations are globe-trotting buying up large sources of natural resources, be they mineral or indeed water. Water is becoming a tool of diplomacy and military strategy. Water is going to become the new politic in the near future, wait and see. Or perhaps do not wait, but start conserving your water reserves before it’s too late. National and Regional Governments must make water manage ment, conservation and sourcing a political neces sity, a public goal.

Or perhaps it was never a substantial idea in the first place and nothing more than a reply to a question he had not fully thought through.
The Caribbean has prime examples of small nations taking water maintenance seriously. There is a move ment within Caribbean governmental organisations to unite their efforts before it is too late to do so. Car ibbean nations have been introducing and expanding upon their water supply pipelines, and further water technologies. Social efforts to teach and encourage pro tection and conservation of their water supply contin ues. The Caribbean faces a future of water scarcity, demanding creative invest ments in their conservation methods.Asiahas been badly hit by water depletion and historic droughts bringing about the destruction of its regional farming com munities in Afghanistan, China, Mountain High lands and The Middle East while the climate damages India, Pakistan and other nations with Monsoon like flooding. Pakistan is lack ing clean water while 1/3 of its landmass is under water presently. The schizo phrenic nature of Climate Change has placed this continent in peril. Lack of or far too much water dam ages this area’s fresh water system, the population and its environment for a long period of time.

The EU has been discuss ing the winter to come and the unhealthy European depend ence on Russian energy supplies for months. It’s been an uneasy discourse. The EU has suggested measures that for many will seem dramatic: A windfall tax on certain energy producers; a price cap on Russian gas imports; mandatory targets for energy consumption.Atthesame time these possibly fanci ful notions are being circulated, inflation continues to batter European voters. The European Central Bank has raised prime interest rates a whopping seven times already this year.
Russian army where it is practical to do so, and in general make this ill-advised war as unpalatable and insupportable for Moscow as pos sible. Reports from the battlefield this week suggest that Ukrainian forces are making significant gains in recapturing lands, towns and cities previously overrun by the RussianStayingarmy.the course also means doing everything the NATO allies can manage to do to diminish the effects of current and future Rus sian energy blackmail attempts. This is so much easier to prescribe from across the Atlantic Ocean in Washington than it is to face in Europe, but the situation is well understood in London, Berlin, Paris and elsewhere on the eco nomic front lines of this war.

has indicated that the pos sibility of republican status may be on the agenda of the future. Will popular sentiment coalesce around staying or leaving the Com monwealth? Time will tell whether this is a hot issue now or whether it has stay ing power beyond the next headline. For now, while the queen’s passing will no doubt reinvigorate discus sions in our country and others about the status of the head of state, the fact that she is no longer with us weighs heavily on many minds. For most Americans, without a royal family, the queen and her sometimes dysfunctional family have represented an elegant and compelling substitute. For the past week, CNN and some other TV outlets have devoted significant air time to documentary reviews of her 70-year reign. Many of them have been fascinat ing, and have reawakened long-dormant memories in American minds of a mon arch whose manner and grace, perhaps even more than her longevity, elicited nationwide attention.

Blinken blithely responded with assur ances that the US “won’t leave our European friends out in the cold. We will emerge stronger and that’s why it’s so important that we stay united.” Frankly, that’s easy for the American to say. The United States domes tic market is not much threatened by Russia turning off its gas and oil spigots. Europe is. Blinken recognizes that “the challenge is to get through the coming winter.”
She has testified before Congress that the war in Ukraine is a classic “war of attrition” in which Moscow clearly seeks to dominate Ukraine and control its entire Black Sea coast. But, Haines said, Vladimir Putin lacks the conventional power to overwhelm his adversary and achieve these goals.
Really?Over the weekend, America’s top diplomat Antony Blinken was in Brussels, where European Union ministers were meeting to address what feels very much like an existential crisis facing their countries in the near future as temperatures drop and energy to heat homes becomes more scarce and more expensive.
The Ukraine war continues to feel like an international game of chicken in which Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden try to stare each other down with threats, atrocities, harassments, sanctions, arms shipments, tough talk and other measures designed to simultaneously provoke and intimidate each other. All the while, a vicious war con tinues to rage on the ground in eastern and southern Ukraine. And the temperatures on battlefields and in homes in Europe are dropping.Whatshould the U.S. and its NATO allies do? Most commentators in New York, Washington and elsewhere believe the West ern allies should “stay the course,” meaning they should continue to provide assistance that will enable Ukraine to contain the conflict in Ukraine’s south and east. The prescription is to continue to strategically arm and rearm the Ukrainian forces so they can resist the invaders and push back the

Whether or not you feel The Bahamas should remain in the Com monwealth of Nations or follow the path of Barbados into republican status, the queen’s passing seemed to send a shock wave around the world. Her death, though at her age of 96 it was hardly unexpected, was an emotional tsunami. She had that kind of impact around the world.
There was a news item in the American press the other day. The headline read: “Europe’s unity will help it weather the winter, says U.S. Secretary of State.”

THE coffin of Queen Elizabeth II left Bucking ham Palace for the last time Wednesday, borne on a horse-drawn carriage and saluted by cannons and the tolling of Big Ben, in a solemn procession through the flag-draped, crowdlined streets of London to Westminster Hall. There, Britain’s longest-serving monarch will lie in state for the world to mourn.
As Zelenskyy visited, his forces pressed their counteroffensive, de-mined retaken ground and inves tigated possible war crimes. He said that “life comes back” as Ukrainian soldiers return to previously occupied villages.TheUkrainian governor of the east ern Luhansk region, Serhiy Haidai, said Ukrainian soldiers were prepar ing to retake the area.

Russian forces left the war-scarred city last week as Kyiv’s soldiers pressed a stunning advance that has reclaimed large swaths of territory in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region.AsZelenskyy looked on and sang the national anthem, the Ukrainian flag was raised in front of the burnedout city hall. After almost six months under Russian occupation, Izium was left largely devastated, with apart ment buildings blackened by fire and pockmarked by artillery strikes.
Crowds shuffled past her coffin in the center of 900-year-old Westmin ster Hall well into the night. People flowed in two lines, with hundreds of thousands expected to pay their respects before her state funeral on Monday.
