The great move
Animal matters | KIM ARANHA
NO, I did not say movie, I said move. Though in all fairness, it would have made a heck of a movie. Hello readers, it’s me Buddy! I don’t usually write articles or talk much. I used to leave that to Chief (my dearly departed partner in crime). So I guess you could say that this is my maiden experience as a writer. Let me tell you what has been happening in my life. The last few weeks have been pretty terrible as far as living in a very disruptive atmosphere. There were people in and out of our home all day, every day, and then things started to disappear, all my favourite things and smells were literally going out the door. I tried to warn Mum that the people she trusted were stealing the furniture and boxes, but she just told me to shush and patted my head; “Good boy, Buddy.” That was confusing! I was not being allowed to be a “good boy, Buddy” because I couldn’t stop all those things going out the door. Mum, I would say, “Look at them talking our stuff from the house!” She would hug me and go back to the “good boy, Buddy” route. The house became more and more empty. I didn’t like how it looked, nor did Bella, Boss and Garmin. Some of our favourite sofas and chairs were removed, our beds

stayed on the floor, and that was just about it. In the very end, even my special sofa was removed; I could have cried. The funny thing is that all my favourite people were in the house all the time, busy, busy, busy, but they always had time to stop and give me love. That was really important to me. Bella, Garmin and Boss needed reassuring, too. It was all so confusing. Some strange men came and removed our dock, then they came back and bang, bang, bang. Mum told us not to worry. She said that she was just letting them build a new dock ahead of time….ahead of what time, I wondered to myself. It was strange not having Chief to share my concerns with. He was always so wise and smart and seemed to be able to read Mum’s mind… I sometimes get confused. This went on for a while, two days ago it was chaos: Lots of people were in the house, trucks, cars, and golf carts loaded up with everything until the house was empty, I mean empty, even our dogs beds disappeared out the gate! Now I was truly panicked. While I lay there wondering if I had done something wrong for them to do this to us, I almost felt like crying again, when suddenly they came to me and clipped my leash on my collar and said, “Come on, Bud, time to go.” “Go where?”...into Mum’s car, and a short drive away
Butterscotch, are just three of the many kittens available for adoption at the Bahamas Humane Society. Buttercup and Toffee like to vie for attention and both are very outgoing and friendly. They’re young and ready to play, and very eager to find that perfect home of their own. Do you have space for a couple of bundles of snuggly love? Buttercup and Toffee might just be the pair for you. BUDDY AMIDST THE MOVING CHAOS we came to a house and we walked into the house and there were boxes everywhere: Wow, all my smells! I could see my bed. I went over to check that I was right. Yes, it as my bed all right. Where’s the water? I went over to the bowls, empty!…. sniff, my bowls, but why are they empty? They usually are kept nice and full of fresh water. I tried my single woof, and it worked, somebody rushed over and put water in the bowl, tasted like the usual water too, thank goodness! The four of us walked around the garden over and over again...so much new stuff to sniff and smell! I actually kind of like this garden, it is pretty, lots of new plants, trees, and all the stuff I know and love are in the house, some are still in boxes, but they take things out and find spots for them all day.. Our first night I got the best treat ever: I got to sleep in Mum’s

bedroom. I always used to, but when my back legs got weak, I had to stop climbing the stairs, which meant that I could not sleep beside her. I am now right where I belong. I didn’t really enjoy sleeping downstairs, so this is just perfect. We don’t pace around the house anymore. After two nights we have realised that this is home now, with all the things we know and love. I am glad that my humans realised how difficult this move can be for us dogs, and that they never forgot to reassure us. Garmin is still being a bit grumpy; he is a brat, but he’ll come round. Tonight, and every night to follow, I will be in the bedroom with my people, and I will sleep deeply and feel safe forever in this new place I call home.
