Five-year-old and mom celebrate first anniversary of lip gloss company By CARA HUNT | Tribune Features Writer | cbrennen@tribunemedia.net LIKE most little girls last year, Autumn Ingraham spent a lot of time playing with her mom’s make-up to pass the time in lockdown. Unlike a lot of girls her age, however, this five-year-old (she was only four when she started) and her mom managed to turn simple playtime into a new business called Glossy Girl By Autumn, which just recently celebrated its first anniversary. “This got started during the pandemic because Autumn was just always using my lipstick, she just would not stop,” Ari Ingraham, Autumn’s mom told Tribune Weekend. “After I kept telling her ‘no’, she asked if she could make her own. And so I decided to go online and buy a lipstick-making kit. It was a way to help her pass the time and leave my stuff alone.” Autumn was thrilled with the idea of making vegan lip glosses. “I was excited because I did not want to get in trouble and I got to make the lipstick myself,” she said. And the five-year-old has it down to a science. “You add colour and the flavour and the scent to the base and you can also add the sparkles,” she said. Originally, Ari ordered a kit that made 20 lipsticks and posted on her social media that anyone interested could purchase one. “I think that they sold out within five minutes and so we just continued selling them,” she said. Those sales eventually led to the creation of Glossy Girl by Autumn. “We sell the lipsticks and then we do Mother’s Day baskets, Easter baskets, and people began messaging us to do gifts for other events as well,” said Ari. Autumn is so delighted by the success of her business, that she says she definitely wants to continue to be a business owner when she grows up. She would also really love to start her own YouTube channel, which would feature make-up, of course, but also “crazy challenges”. It won’t be her main job however, Autumn is quick to inform us. “I love arts and crafts. I love cutting out paper and I want to be an art teacher,” she said of her dreams of the future. AUTUMN INGRAHAM, 5, shows off the lip glosses she helped make.

ON THE Italian island of Sardinia, we were smitten with a richly flavoured pasta with ground pork and wild fennel. It came loaded with a host of spices and herbs, including parsley, black pepper, fennel seed, paprika, red pepper flakes, onion and salt. Delicious, but with a daunting ingredient list for a weeknight pasta. When it came time to adapt the recipe for our book, “Milk Street Tuesday Nights,” which limits recipes to 45 minutes or less, we saw a fantastic shortcut that saved time and ingredients. Italian sausage always includes at least some of those seasonings, so we just removed the sausage meat from the casing and sauteed it to

Orecchiette, a coin-size, saucer-shaped pasta, is ideal for catching flavorful bits of sausage, scallions and fennel seeds; if you can’t find orecchiette, small shells and cavatelli work well, too. Cook over medium, stirring, until the scallions are softened, 2 to 3 minutes. Add the vermouth and cook, scraping up any browned bits, until most of the liquid evaporates, about 1 minute. Stir in the reserved cooking water, the lemon zest and half of the scallion greens. Bring to a simmer and cook until slightly thickened, 1 to 2 minutes. interview
Gabrielle Racquel Styles From singing karaoke with her family, to performing on a stage with international gospel artists, this music artist is ready to follow God’s plan wherever it leads her. She tells Cara Hunt about the re-release of a special song dedicated to the victims of the Bahamas’ worst aviation disaster and the launch of new song, GABRIELLE Racquel Styles wants her music to inspire people to worship God and trust in Him even as they navigate the challenges of the secular world. “I grew up in a singing family, and I liked to sing karaoke and things like that, but it was never something that I took more seriously,” she told Tribune Weekend. However, six years ago, her life changed, propelling her to share her talents with the world. “That is when I got saved,” she explained. “And I got really involved in singing in my church.” At the time, she lived in Bimini and attended Gateway Outreach Ministry. “I was really afraid to sing in the front of crowds, but honestly, as I started to grow in my faith and sing in front of the congregation, my confidence to sing grew and now I really enjoy it.” Gabby says she just fell into recording music professionally. “This was all God’s doing, He had a plan

“The message of the song is that even when it seems that God is not there, when it seems that He is silent, He is still there to be a present help in the time of trouble.” for me, and I have just followed the path he gave me,” she said. Gabby followed that path to make her debut in the music industry in 2018. The opportunity came to sing lead on the Jesus Remains project, which was an album of praise and worship music produced by her church. Gabby sang lead on the title track “Jesus Remains”. The project went on to receive several award nominations in the Bahamas and won the ‘Gospel Song of the Year’ award in 2019 at the Elevation Awards. “I was able to sing the lead track on that album and it was an amazing experience,” she noted. She has also performed as background vocalist for Bahamian gospel artists Cara T Newton and Oslien Jadorte, as well as international artists Jekalyn Carr and Kelontae Gavin. Last year, another opportunity presented itself to her when she was asked to record the song “When God Seems Silent”, which was written by Oslien Jadorte. The song was originally penned after the tragic Chalks Ocean Airways plane crash in December 2015, in which all 18 passengers and two crew members perished. The plane, a 1947 Grumman G-73T Turbine Mallard, was travelling from Florida to Bimini, and most of the passengers were residents of Bimini who were returning home from doing some Christmas shopping. The message of the song is that even when things seem at their lowest point, God is still there. Gabby agreed to re-release the song because she thought its message was extremely timely last year, given the struggles people were experiencing not just with the COVID-19 pandemic, but following the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian, which slammed into Grand Bahama and Abaco in 2019. “The message of the song is that even when it seems that God is not there, when it seems that He is silent, He is still there to be a present help in the time of trouble,” she said. Last Summer, she followed up with second single, “Sure Thing”, which was written by Minister Jalysha Seide. “She came to me and explained that she had written this song that she thought I would be able to do, and we did,” said Gabby. “It’s a song that talks about how we can try and depend on people, but they can fail you, but God is always a sure thing and you can always depend on Him.” Both songs will be part of her new EP, which will
also include three other songs. Gabby describes her style of singing as having a contemporary vibe. “I have to say though that I really love worship music. That is my thing. So those songs did in a way take me out of my comfort zone a little, but they still are exalting the name of Jesus,” she said. Gabby hopes people will be uplifted and find
comfort in her music, particularly in this season which has been difficult for so many. “I want to help souls come to the kingdom,” she added. And looking forward, she says she will let her music follow whatever direction God takes her. “I am really here to follow His agenda,” she added.

Stacs spreads hope with joyful new song and video
ALEXANDER “Stacs” Hepburn feels blessed
By ALESHA CADET Tribune Features Reporter acadet@tribunemedia.net GOSPEL rapper Alexander “Stacs” Hepburn hopes his new song can be a blessing to all who hear it and provide joy in these difficult times. Inspiration for his latest single, “The Blessing is on Me”, featuring Anna Calixte, came from a sermon his pastor preached. “In 2018, my pastor released a prophetic word in church that said ‘the blessing is on us’. I wrote that declaration down on my phone and it evolved into a lifestyle. One day in church this melody came to me, and the rest is history,” he said of his new song. Members of his church, he added, always let it be known that “the blessing is on me” when referring to their lives. For the accompanying music video, Stacs wanted to do something special. The concept and the visuals, he explained, were heavily influenced by Kirk Franklin’s “I Smile” video, which has other artists lip-syncing to the lyrics as the vibrant background behind them changes colour. For his video, Stacs said he wanted something similarly bright, fun, joyful, and something that would be remembered. “What separates my video is the choice of colours and the overall

Artist spotlight: Alia Coley
By JEFFARAH GIBSON | Tribune Features Writer | jgibson@tribunemedia.net
IT’S hard to believe today that Alia Coley, who has sung back-up vocals for major recording stars such as Patti LaBelle, BeBe Winans, Kelly Roland, Michael McDonald, Boyz II Men and Yolanda Adams, once used to be afraid to perform in front of an audience. But shying away from people who wanted to hear her sing was how this Bahamian artist actually got her start, at the tender age of six. “It all started when one day my neighbours were having a party and they asked me to sing for them....I was so shy that I sang for them (hiding) under the dining room table, and the rest is history,” she told Tribune Weekend. After graduating high school, Alia
decided to further her craft by attending the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. Upon her return from college, she became one of the lead vocalists for an inter-cultural show called “Caribe”. Then, she started singing at numerous hotels, including Sandals Royal Bahamian, Sandals Emerald Bay, Atlantis and Breezes. Alia released her debut album in 2005 entitled “Feel My Heart”. This was followed by her sophomore record in 2010 entitled “Unfadeable”. Over the years, she has grown tremendously from her humble beginnings of singing her heart out in church, to now being an established musician carving her own path. And she is doing so with the help
of her latest song, “Favor”. “I am so excited about this song and pray that it will be an inspiration to many. Stay tuned for that,” she said. Beyond the songs she performs and the longevity of her career, Alia is delighted to see her legacy cemented by her daughter, Almika Cates, who has now started following in her footsteps. “I came from a family of entertainers. My mother Corine Harris, also known as ‘Shalimar’, was one of the top fire dancers in the country and travelled the world representing the Bahamas. But what a lot of people didn’t know was that she had the voice of an angel,” said Alia. Her uncle Glen Nottage was described as an “energetic and suave entertainer”, while her cousin Sunny Johnson had a voice that was said to be “out of this world”.
“Years later my daughter Almika Cates discovered her gift of singing and decided to pursue it as a career in 2016. I was so elated that she took this endeavour and allowed her gifts to make way for her. She can sing her butt off. She has mad vocal skills and can soothe you with jazz vocals, from Natalie Cole to R&B. It’s such a blessing to see her make her mark as an artist and establish her own sound,” said Alia. There is a possibility of a future collaboration between the motherdaughter duo, but in the meantime, Alia said she will keep making music that moves people in every way possible.

New this week: Marvel’s ‘What If...?’ and Lizzo’s ‘Rumors’ By The Associated Press Here’s a collection curated by The Associated Press’ entertainment journalists of what’s arriving on TV, streaming services and music platforms this week. MOVIES • John David Washington, already part of two of the more defining films of the pandemic (Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” and “Malcolm & Marie”) is back again in “Beckett,” a manhunt thriller set in Greece. Ferdinando Cito Filomarino directs the film, about a Ohio tourist (Washington) who’s vacationing with his girlfriend (Alicia Vikander) when a car accident on mountain road at night lands him in the middle of a political conspiracy. It debuts Friday on Netflix. AP Film Writer Jake Coyle TELEVISION • “What If...?” is an embarrassment of MCU riches. The animated series features a bevy of heroes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe in reimagined events. The stars reprising their roles as part of the voice cast include — in part — Andy Serkis,
Angela Bassett, Tom Hiddleston, Benedict Cumberbatch, Benedict Wong, Benicio Del Toro, Djimon Hounsou, Evangeline Lilly, Natalie Portman, Paul Rudd, Taika Waititi, Tilda Swinton. A melancholy note: The late Chadwick Boseman is heard once more as his “Black Panther” character. The Disney+ series, the first animated one from Marvel Studios, debuts Wednesday, • Say a fond bye-bye to NBC’s “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” which begins its eighth and last season Thursday. The series deserves praise, just for starters, for making a network switch in style and giving Andre Braugher a chance to show his comedic chops. Then there’s the rest of the adroit ensemble cast, including Andy Samberg, Melissa Fumero, Terry Crews and Stephanie Beatriz. It won’t be just last-laughs at the precinct, with the squad tested by a difficult year in the concluding 10 episodes airing in backto-back pairs at 8pm and 8.30pm EDT Thursday through September 16. • Small-town pro wrestlers in Georgia and those who love them are the heart of Starz’s new drama series “Heels,” debuting 9pm EDT on Sunday. The Spade brothers, Jack (Stephen Amell) and Ace (Alexander Ludwig) are fighting for the soul of their late father’s wrestling enterprise, while their partners Staci Spade (Alison Luff) and Crystal Tyler (Kelli Berglund) increasingly carry a share of the challenge, emotional and otherwise. literary lives - Andy Warhol (1928-1987)
The evolution of a pop culture icon - Part I
Sir Christopher Ondaatje writes about the American artist, film director and producer who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art “If you want to know all about Andy Warhol, just look at the surface of my paintings and films and me, and there I am. There’s nothing behind it.” - Andy Warhol ANDY Warhol was born Andrew Warhola on August 6, 1928, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was the fourth child of Ondrej Warhola and Julia (née Zavacká) – working-class emigrants from Mikó, Austria-Hungary – called Miková today in Northeastern Slovakia. Warhol’s father emigrated to the United States in 1914, and his mother followed him in 1921. Warhol’s father worked in a coal mine. The family lived in the Oakland neighbourhood of Pittsburgh, and were Ruthenian Catholics, one of twenty-three Eastern European branches, and attended the local St John Chrysoston Byzantine Catholic Church. Before he was ten years old – in third grade – Warhol developed Sydenham’s chorea (St Vitus dance) – a nervous disease that causes involuntary movements of the extremities and skin blotches. He spent a lot of time in bed, drawing, listening to the radio and collecting pictures of movie stars, which he stuck on the wall around his bed. His father died in an accident when he was thirteen. Warhol graduated from Schenley High School in 1945 and won a Scholastic Art and Writing Award. He hoped to study at the University of Pittsburgh and become an art teacher, but instead he enrolled in the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) and studied commercial art. He served as art director of the student art magazine Cano and designed a cover in 1948, and a full-page interior illustration in 1949 – his first two published artworks. He earned a Bachelor of Fine art in pictorial design in 1949, and that same year moved to New York City to begin a career in magazine illustration and advertising. “Art is what you can get away with.” - Andy Warhol
One of Warhol’s first commissions was to draw shoes for Glamour magazine. This led to a job as a designer for Israel Miller – a shoe manufacturer. Warhol realised early on that he could adapt the silk screen printing technique to making paintings. He was taught in Manhattan by Max Arthur Cohn. He used tracing paper and blotted the ink while it was still wet – a crude method of printmaking which allowed him to create endless variations on the theme. He was intensely creative and quoted in his book Popism: The Warhol Sixties: “When you do something exactly wrong, you always turn up something.” He used an epidiascope, which is an opaque projector that can project images of book pages, drawings and photographs on to other surfaces – like canvas. These images under Warhol’s manipulation would be transformed into other art forms by tracing contours and developing shadows. This was the initial technique he used to propel his creative artistic career. He used a photograph by Edward Wallowitch (an early boyfriend),Young Man Smoking a Cigarette (1956), for a 1958 design for a book cover he sold to Simon and Schuster for the Walter Ross pulp novel The Immortal, and later used other images for his dollar bill series, and for Big Campbell’s Soup Can with Can Opener
(Vegetable) – 1962, which initiated Warhol’s most sustained motif, the soup can. RCA Records hired Warhol, and another freelance artist, Sid Maurer, to design album covers and other promotional material to participate in the expanding record industry. Warhol began exhibiting his work in the late 1950s. He had exhibitions in the Hugo Gallery and the Bodley Gallery in New York and held his first West Coast exhibition in the Los Angeles Ferus Gallery with “Campbell’s Soup Cans”. It was the first pop art exhibition on the West Coast. His first New York solo pop art exhibition was hosted at Eleanor Ward’s Stable Gallery from November 6 - 24, 1962. This exhibit featured: Marilyn Diptych, 100 Soup Cans, 100 Coke Bottles, and 100 Dollar Bills. Warhol met the poet John Giorno at the Stable Gallery, who would star in Warhol’s first film Sleep in 1963. “What’s great about this country is that America started the tradition where the richest consumers buy essentially the same things as the poorest. You can be watching TV and see Coca Cola, and you can know that the President drinks Coke. Liz Taylor drinks Coke, and just think, you can drink Coke too. - Andy Warhol

During the 1960s, Warhol made paintings of iconic American objects like dollar bills, mushroom clouds, electric chairs, Campbell’s soup cans, Coca-Cola bottles, and celebrities like Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Marlon Brando, Troy Donahue, Muhammad Ali, and Elizabeth Taylor, as well as newspaper photographs of police dogs attacking African-American protectors during the Civil Rights Movement. He founded his studio, The Factory, and gathered around him a number of artists, writers, musicians, and underground celebrities. His work became very popular as well as controversial. The Museum of Modern Art in New York hosted a symposium on pop art in December 1962, and artists like Warhol were criticised for their flagrant consumerism. Warhol’s critics were scandalised by his open embrace of commercial market culture but the symposium also set the tone for Warhol’s reception. “They always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself.” - Andy Warhol
One of Warhol’s famous Marilyn Monroe works, 1967, and, below, his iconic Campbell’s Soup oil painting. 1964.
The 1969 exhibition The American Supermarket was held in Paul Bianchini’s Upper East Side Gallery. The show was presented as a typical US small supermarket, except that everything in it, including the produce, canned goods, meat, and posters were all created by six prominent pop artists – among them the controversial Billy Apple, Mary Inman, and Robert Watts. Warhol’s painting of a can of Campbell’s soup cost $1,500, while each autographed can sold for $6. Warhol shamelessly used assistants to increase his productivity in the 1950s and 1960s. This remained a controversial aspect of his artistic career – particularly in the 1960s. Gerard Malanga assisted him with his increasing production of silk screens, films, sculpture and other works at The Factory – Warhol’s aluminium foil-and-silver-print-lined studio on 47th Street (later moved to Broadway). Members of Warhol’s Factory crowd included Freddie Herko, Ondine, Ronald Tavel, Mary Woronov, Billy Name, and Brigid Berlin. He also groomed a retinue of bohemian eccentrics whom he called his “Superstars”, including Nico, Joe Dallesandro, Edie Sedgwick, Viva, Ultra Violet, Holly Woodlawn, Jackie Curtis, and Candy Darling. Everyone participated in the Factory films, and some like Brigid Berlin (from whom he got the idea to tape his telephone conversations) remained friends with Warhol until he died. Other important figures in the New York underground art/cinema world, such as writer John Giorno and film-maker Jack Smith also appeared in 1960s Warhol films which premiered at the New Andy Warhol Garrick Theatre and 55th Street Playhouse. He was a tremendous self promoter and showed his involvement in a whole series of artistic ventures. And then disaster struck. On June 3, 1968, Valerie Solanus, a radical feminist writer, who had been a peripheral figure in The Factory scene, shot
Warhol and Mario Amaya, a curator and art critic, at Warhol’s studio. In 1967, she had authored SCUM manifesto, a feminist tract that advocated the elimination of men. She had also appeared in Warhol’s film, I, a Man. Earlier in the day she had been rejected from entry into The Factory, asking for the return of a script she had given to Warhol. Mario Amaya was released from hospital the same day, but Warhol was seriously wounded and barely survived. He had physical problems for the rest of his life and had to wear a surgical corset. The shooting had an enormous effect on Warhol’s art and life. Solanus was arrested the day after the shooting and explained that Warhol “had too much control over my life”. She was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and sentenced to three years under the control of the Department of Corrections. Security on The Factory increased substantially, but for many The Factory ceased to exist. They simply did not come around anymore. The 1970s were a much quieter decade for Andy Warhol. He became more entrepreneurial and spent months of his time getting rich patrons for his portraits: the Shah of Iran and his wife Empress Farah Pahlavi, the Shah’s sister Princess Ashraf Pahlavi, Mick Jagger, Liza Minelli, John Lennon, Diana Ross and Brigitte Bardot. Mao Zedong was created in 1973. He founded Interior magazine with Gerard Malanga, and Bob Colacello was the first editor. He published The Philosophy of Warhol in 1975. He was quieter and socialised at various nightspots in New York City, including Max’s Kansas City, and later in Studio 54. He was now regarded as being quiet, shy and an observer. He founded the New York Academy of Art with his friend Stuart Pivar. The 1980s were a critical and financial success for Warhol, mainly because of his affiliation
with prolific younger artists: Jean-Michel Basquiat, Julian Schnabel, David Salle, as well as the Transavantgarde Movement in Europe, including Francesco Clemente and Enzo Cucchi. He teamed up with fifteen other artists including David Hockney and Cy Twombly and contributed a speed skater print to the Art and Sport collection. The Speed Skater was used in the official 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics poster. Graffiti artist Fab Five Freddy paid homage to Warhol when he painted an entire train with Campbell’s soup cans. But Warhol was now being criticised for being a “business artist”. Reviewers disliked his portraits of personalities and celebrities. In hindsight, however, critics have hailed Warhol’s superficiality and commerciality as “the most brilliant of our times”. In 1984, Vanity Fair commissioned Warhol to produce a portrait of Prince to accompany an article celebrating the success of Purple Rain and its accompanying movie. Orange Prince (1984) was created similar to the 1962 Marilyn Flavors– among some of Warhol’s best celebrity portraits. Warhol was gay, and he recorded how excited he was to see Prince and Billy Idol at a party in the mid-1980s and compared them to the movie stars of the ‘50s and ‘60s who inspired his paintings. Andy Warhol died in Manhattan at 6.32am on February 22, 1987. He was fifty-eight years old. He had delayed having his recurring gallbladder problems checked as he was frightened to enter hospital and see doctors. He seemed to be making a good recovery from gallbladder surgery at the New York Hospital before dying from a postoperative irregular heartbeat. His family sued the hospital for inadequate care, and the malpractice case was quickly settled out of court for an undisclosed amount of money. Doctors expected Warhol to survive the surgery, but his medical state before the operation revealed significant risk. Warhol’s brothers took his body back to Pittsburgh where an open-coffin wake was held at the Thomas P Kunsak Funeral Home. The bronze casket had gold-plated rails and white upholstery. He was dressed in a black cashmere suit, a paisley tie, a platinum wig and sunglasses. The funeral liturgy was held at the Holy Ghost Byzantine Catholic Church on Pittsburgh’s North Side. After the liturgy, the coffin was driven to St John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Cemetery in Bethel Park, a south suburb of Pittsburgh. At the grave, the priest said a brief prayer. Before the coffin was lowered, a copy of Interview magazine, an Interview T-shirt, and a bottle of Estée Lauder perfume “Beautiful” was dropped into the grave. Warhol was buried next to his mother and father. A Memorial Service was held in Manhattan for Warhol on April 1, 1987 at St Patrick’s Cathedral, New York. • Next week, Sir Christopher Ondaatje takes a deep dive into the work of Warhol and its impact on the world. •Sir Christopher Ondaatje is the author of The Last Colonial. The great move
Animal matters | KIM ARANHA
NO, I did not say movie, I said move. Though in all fairness, it would have made a heck of a movie. Hello readers, it’s me Buddy! I don’t usually write articles or talk much. I used to leave that to Chief (my dearly departed partner in crime). So I guess you could say that this is my maiden experience as a writer. Let me tell you what has been happening in my life. The last few weeks have been pretty terrible as far as living in a very disruptive atmosphere. There were people in and out of our home all day, every day, and then things started to disappear, all my favourite things and smells were literally going out the door. I tried to warn Mum that the people she trusted were stealing the furniture and boxes, but she just told me to shush and patted my head; “Good boy, Buddy.” That was confusing! I was not being allowed to be a “good boy, Buddy” because I couldn’t stop all those things going out the door. Mum, I would say, “Look at them talking our stuff from the house!” She would hug me and go back to the “good boy, Buddy” route. The house became more and more empty. I didn’t like how it looked, nor did Bella, Boss and Garmin. Some of our favourite sofas and chairs were removed, our beds

stayed on the floor, and that was just about it. In the very end, even my special sofa was removed; I could have cried. The funny thing is that all my favourite people were in the house all the time, busy, busy, busy, but they always had time to stop and give me love. That was really important to me. Bella, Garmin and Boss needed reassuring, too. It was all so confusing. Some strange men came and removed our dock, then they came back and bang, bang, bang. Mum told us not to worry. She said that she was just letting them build a new dock ahead of time….ahead of what time, I wondered to myself. It was strange not having Chief to share my concerns with. He was always so wise and smart and seemed to be able to read Mum’s mind… I sometimes get confused. This went on for a while, two days ago it was chaos: Lots of people were in the house, trucks, cars, and golf carts loaded up with everything until the house was empty, I mean empty, even our dogs beds disappeared out the gate! Now I was truly panicked. While I lay there wondering if I had done something wrong for them to do this to us, I almost felt like crying again, when suddenly they came to me and clipped my leash on my collar and said, “Come on, Bud, time to go.” “Go where?”...into Mum’s car, and a short drive away

BUDDY AMIDST THE MOVING CHAOS we came to a house and we walked into the house and there were boxes everywhere: Wow, all my smells! I could see my bed. I went over to check that I was right. Yes, it as my bed all right. Where’s the water? I went over to the bowls, empty!…. sniff, my bowls, but why are they empty? They usually are kept nice and full of fresh water. I tried my single woof, and it worked, somebody rushed over and put water in the bowl, tasted like the usual water too, thank goodness! The four of us walked around the garden over and over again...so much new stuff to sniff and smell! I actually kind of like this garden, it is pretty, lots of new plants, trees, and all the stuff I know and love are in the house, some are still in boxes, but they take things out and find spots for them all day.. I didn’t really enjoy sleeping downstairs, so this is just perfect. We don’t pace around the house anymore. After two nights we have realised that this is home now, with all the things we know and love. I am glad that my humans realised how difficult this move can be for us dogs, and that they never forgot to reassure us. Garmin is still being a bit grumpy; he is a brat, but he’ll come round. Tonight, and every night to follow, I will be in the bedroom with my people, and I will sleep deeply and feel safe forever in this new place I call home.

the new pot, and back fill it with a new potting mix being mindful to not fill the soil higher than the original soil line. Many plants do not want their stems buried in soil. Water the plant into the new media. I always like to apply a tablespoon or three of a slowrelease fertilizer to help the transition and to give the plant a boost of nutrients to encourage stronger and faster growth into the new pot. Just a note, Black Kow, manure, compost and the likes do not make for good potting medias as they often do not have enough airspace, drainage, or moisture holding capacity and they are easily compacted and may contain pests or weed seed. It is generally recommended to use potting medias designed for interior or exterior potting, depending upon your situation. The second method of trimming roots comes in handy when the plant efficient thing is to take the plant out base where they can thrive. method. Simple as that, slice off the bottom 30 percent or so of the root, remove the old potting soil from the pot and around the roots, and then set a fresh base of a new potting soil back into the pot, set the plant in so that the original soil line is towards the top of the pot, and back fill with fresh potting media. Water it in and apply some nutrients and move it back to its original location! Bam, all done. Usually, a repotting of indoor plants can last for two to three years, unless it is really happy, then it may be necessary to give it an annual root pruning. Typically though, this only has to be done every second or third year for most of the material that is used indoors. It always benefits to add a layer of mulch to help preserve moisture and add organic material to the pot as the mulch breaks down over time. Bringing the outdoors to the office or home is aesthetically pleasing and somewhat therapeutic, as well as giving the added benefit of removing toxins from the air and producing oxygen in return. So, beat the heat and bring garden indoors! As always, I wish you happy gardening. • Adam Boorman is the nursery manager at the Fox Hill Nursery.
