Three days that changed the world WHAT IF THE RESURRECTION HAPPENED TODAY?

IMAGINE waking up one morning to a flood of WhatsApp messages, news alerts, and Instagram stories, all proclaiming the same thing: “ The tomb is empty. And He is risen!”

Would you believe it? One bible verse that comes to mind is Luke 24:5: “ Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; He has risen.”

Holy Week, especially the three days between the crucifixion and the resurrection, remains one of the most powerful times on the Christian calendar. But in a world driven by likes, comments, and breaking news banners, how would the story unfold if it happened today?

I found myself reflecting on this very idea, not just as a journalist, but as a believer. If I were there, if it was happening now, I think I would’ve wanted to stay tuned at every step of the way. My faith would lead me to want to do something, to be present, to ask questions, and maybe even try to understand what I was witnessing. Because when you understand the why, why He died, why He rose, I believe it changes everything.

Tribune Religion spoke to a number of Bahamians that considered the question, what if the resurrection happened in our time, how would you have responded?

“As Christians, we know that nothing about that weekend happened in vain,” said Christina Bethel. She went on to say every moment, from the betrayal in the garden, to the bruises Jesus bore, to the

moment the stone was rolled away, was part of a divine plan.

“If you’re rooted in Christ, you truly appreciate what was done, how it was done, and why He did it. I am entirely grateful to Jesus,” she said.

Another local, 26-year-old Katie Simmons, said she believes it would be overwhelming. “Social media would’ve gone crazy. People would be speculating, doubting, debating. But those of us who really believe would know, this is what He said would happen. And I would be in complete awe. I’m in awe when I read the stories in the bible, so I can only imagine. Honestly, I’d probably be at the tomb myself,” said Katie.

Then there’s Ms Elaine, a lifelong churchgoer and prayer warrior, who shared with us: “ The whole world would stop. I know I would be on my knees thanking God. Because to live in the time where we saw prophecy fulfilled, it would confirm everything I ever believed. I’d probably be calling my grandkids telling them, ‘See? He’s real. He’s alive. Even though that is something I tell them almost on the daily, Jesus is indeed real.”

For Jackie Johnson, she believes there is a beauty in wondering how modernday people would respond. “ The story of Easter isn’t just about the baskets, the festivals, trips and fun. It is deep rooted in faith, inviting persons each year, to experience the miracle of resurrection. Maybe not through a headline or a viral video like you are asking about, but in our hearts, our choices, and our belief that what happened then still matters now. It’s a thought-provoking question though. You gave me something to think about. I may journal it,” she said.

ACW embracing strong faith

OFFICERS and executive members of The Anglican Church Women (ACW) from various churches in the Diocese of The Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands were given the bold mandate to be women of strong faith, while enlarging their territory.

This spiritual directive was given to the women as they recently gathered for the ACW’s 26th annual Presidents and Vice Presidents Seminar under the theme: “Women of Strong Faith, Enlarging our Territory,” supported by the scripture reference Isaiah 54:2.

The women filled the parish center of the Church of the Epiphany eager to hear from various speakers, who spoke on different aspects of the theme.

The Right Reverend Laish Z Boyd, Diocesan Bishop and Patron of the ACW, gave his charge to the women to launch out in service, remembering God and honouring God with their lives.

Deacon Anatol Ferguson, Assistant Curate at Christ the King Anglican Church, spoke on being united and committed as women of strong faith who are enlarging their territory.

Bernadette Hutcheson, wife of the Rev Whitfield Hutcheson, spoke on embracing our Anglican heritage.

Rev Rondeno Rolle spoke on growing spiritually. “Enlarging our territory is about stepping out in faith to impact the world around us for the kingdom of God. God calls us to take action whether it’s

within our homes, our workplaces, or our communities,” said Rev Rolle.

He added: “We are called to enlarge our territory spiritually by taking bold steps to serve others, share the gospel, and help build His Kingdom. Our spiritual growth is linked to how we exercise our faith in real tangible ways.”

Council president of the ACW, Deborah McKinney, said when the Seminar was started 26 years ago under the leadership of Majorie Stuart, the primary purpose was to conduct training of the branch officers.

That is still true today, the seminar also allows the women time to get motivated and inspired by the various speakers, while providing an opportunity for the ACW sisters to fellowship with members from the various Anglican churches.

Ms Mckinney added: “We in the ACW are indeed women of strong faith. From the women who tirelessly work in the kitchen preparing for soup kitchens and during fundraisers. Those who provide care packages for persons in need, to the women who mentor the young ladies at their churches and at-risk girls in the community. Faith is required in all that we do, and it is by faith that our organization has grown into what it is today. We anticipate nothing but the best for the future, continuing to strive as we minister to every woman who comes through our organisation.”

Evangelistic Temple marks 90 years of faith, legacy, and revival

WITH a rich legacy rooted in faith, resilience, and community service, Evangelistic Temple Assembly of God is celebrating a historic milestone — its 90th anniversary.

In celebration of its 90-year journey, Evangelistic Temple will host a Gala Banquet at the Baha Mar Resort on April 25 at 6.30pm.

The elegant event will be an evening of reflection, thanksgiving, and celebration of God’s goodness over the decades.

The festivities continue with a special Anniversary Church Service on April 27 at 10am at Evangelistic Temple. The entire community is invited to join in the spirit-filled gathering, which promises heartfelt worship and inspiring reflections on the church’s legacy.

From its humble beginnings in the 1930s, when a small band of Pentecostal believers met in private homes, to its current standing as a spiritual powerhouse on Collins Avenue, the church has remained a beacon of hope for generations of Bahamians.

“This is more than a celebration of years—it’s a celebration of God’s faithfulness through every season,” said Senior Pastor Rev Keno S Smith.

“We stand on the shoulders of spiritual giants who paved the way with sacrifice and vision. As we honor the past, we are also reaching forward with fresh passion to impact the next generation.”

The story of Evangelistic Temple is marked by prayer, perseverance, and purpose. Born out of the global Pentecostal revival sparked by the Azusa Street movement, the church was first known as the Pentecostal Lighthouse Tabernacle.

Under the guidance of early pioneer Rev Vivian Weech, it established its first sanctuary in 1934 and became the first Assemblies of God Church in The Bahamas the following year, with just 17 charter members.

Through the decades, Evangelistic Temple has grown both spiritually and structurally. Despite facing adversity—including a fire that destroyed its sanctuary in 1974—the church has continued to thrive. Longtime members credit much of that strength to the steady leadership of past spiritual leaders such as Rev Dr Gary V Curry, who served

for 34 years, and Rev Dr Vaughan L Cash, who shepherded the church through major periods of growth.

“Those years were foundational,” said. Minister Kikiya Smith, who serves alongside her husband in ministry.

“We are grateful for the legacy, and we are inspired to keep building upon it in a way that honors the Lord and serves our community.”

Evangelistic Temple’s impact extends beyond Sunday services. The church is home to Temple Christian School and has been instrumental in the growth of ministries like Teen Challenge Bahamas. From youth outreach to pastoral care, the mission has remained constant: to reach the lost and disciple the Body of Christ.

Today, signs of revival are especially evident among the young adults—a generation that Pastor Smith believes is central to the church’s future.

“We’re committed to being a church that continues to love deeply, serve faithfully, and proclaim Christ boldly,” he said. “The best is yet to come.”

As Evangelistic Temple steps into its tenth decade, it is doing so with gratitude, renewed vision, and a steadfast heart for ministry.
