‘Jazz’ shines again
By TENAJH SWEETING
If the New York Yankees’ spring training is any indication, Major League Baseball (MLB) pro Jasrado “Jazz” Chisholm Jr will be a force to be reckoned with at second base for the upcoming MLB season.
Chisholm Jr smashed his second homer of the Yankees spring training

yesterday in the team’s 9-7 victory against the Philadelphia Phillies at the BayCare Ballpark in Clearwater, Florida.
The Bronx Bombers had control of the game through three innings with a three-run lead.
“Jazz” entered the scoring barrage early for New York. He sent Phillies pitcher Taijuan Walker’s fastball 387 feet to the right centre field for his second homer of the Yankees spring training.
Chisholm’s two-run shot allowed Yankees’ left fielder Jasson Dominiguez to score and put the Yanks in charge 3-0 at the top of the third. He was involved in the action again at the top of the fourth inning. He singled to right field which put Dominguez in the position to score his

second run and helped first baseman Cody Bellinger to move to third base.
The Yankees were in the driver’s seat eight runs to none at the top of the sixth inning before a five-run seventh inning by the Phillies shifted the score 9-7 to close out the matchup.
‘Jazz’ had a solid game against the Phillies. He finished batting 2-for-3 with a homer, one run scored and 3RBIs (runs batted in).
This was Chisholm’s second game with a home run during the Yankees Spring Training run. He went yard in New York’s 6-5 loss against the St Louis Cardinals earlier this month. He connected on a fastball from Cardinals pitcher Andre Callante to put the Yankees ahead 2-1 at the top of the third inning in that game.
Chisholm Jr is batting .173 with two homers, seven runs scored and six RBIs during the 15 games played for the Yankees Spring Training.
With the 2025 MLB season just a week away, ‘Jazz’ seems poised to have another great season.
This time around the versatile baseball pro will be making his return to second base for the first time since his tenure with the Marlins. He will move to his natural position after playing at the “hot corner” in his first season with the Yankees.
Despite it being the first time he played at the position in his career, the 27-year-old turned some heads in his new role last season. He had arguably the best statistical output of his career in the Big

Apple. He played in 46 games for the Yankees and batted .273 with 48 hits, 11 homers, 23 RBIs and 18 stolen bases.
Additionally, he played in 147 games, the most of his career, and batted .256 with career highs of 74 runs, 24 homers, 73 RBIs and 40 stolen bases.
He closed out last season with a 4-1 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series but made history as the second Bahamian to make it to that stage and the first Bahamian to hit a homerun at the World Series.
As for MLB Spring Training, the Yankees will take on the Baltimore Orioles tonight at 8:05pm at the Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota, Florida.
The 2025 MLB Season begins on March 27.

The Pacers retook the lead with 14.7 seconds left when Siakam stole the ball and a wide open Andrew Nembhard knocked down a 3-pointer to make it 131130. Indiana closed it out at the free-throw line.
Nembhard finished with 22 points and eight assists while Tyrese Haliburton sat out with a back injury. Mathurin also had seven rebounds.

Fred VanVleet added 19 points for the Rockets, who maintained their second-place position in the Western Conference, ahead of — among others — the surging Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors. PISTONS 116, HEAT 113
MIAMI (AP) — Cade Cunningham banked in a 3-pointer with less than a second remaining, giving Detroit a win over Miami and sending the Heat to their ninth consecutive loss. Cunningham had his ninth triple-double of the season — 25 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists for the Pistons, who trailed for most of the second half and never led by more than two until the final second. Bam Adebayo finished with 30
points, nine rebounds and eight assists for the Heat, who are stuck in their longest losing streak since an 11-game slide during the 2007-08 season. Miami was ahead 93-88 going into the fourth quarter and led by eight in the final period. The Heat lost for the NBA-leading 12th time this season when holding a lead at any point in the fourth.
PELICANS 119, TIMBERWOLVES 115
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Zion Williamson scored 29 points and CJ McCollum added 18 for New Orleans as the Pelicans surprised Minnesota a win. The Timberwolves have lost two straight after winning eight in a row.
Minnesota is in a battle with Golden State for the No. 6 seed in the Western Conference. Wednesday’s loss drops Minnesota a full game behind the Warriors. After trailing 43-32 in the second quarter, the Pelicans went on a 14-0 run to take a 46-43 lead. The two teams went back and forth for most of the rest of the game but Minnesota never could establish a comfortable lead against the Pelicans.

The Hawks led 70-57 at halftime, then Risacher hit four 3s in the third quarter — including three on three consecutive possessions — to quickly push the lead to 26. Atlanta’s lead ballooned to 100-65 late in the third quarter after Young hit a deep 3.
CELTICS 104, NETS 96
BOSTON (AP) — Baylor Scheierman scored 13 of his career-high 20 points in the fourth quarter, Kristaps Porzingis had 25 points and 13 rebounds and Boston beat Brooklyn. Scheierman took advantage of some bonus playing time as the Celtics rested injured stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown against the struggling Nets. Boston still had plenty down the stretch to hold off Brooklyn, which couldn’t stop Scheierman’s second-half surge. After beating the buzzer at the end of the third with a 3-pointer that put Boston up 71-70, Scheierman hit three more from beyond the arc in the fourth before leaving to a standing ovation with about four minutes left. Scheierman, a rookie out of Creighton, had never scored more than 15 points before Tuesday. Derrick White scored 18 points, Jrue Holiday had 12 points and eight assists and Payton Pritchard added 10 points for Boston, which won its third straight. March Madness: Mount St. Mary’s beats American 83-72 in First Four to earn date with No. 1 Duke
By JEFF WALLNER Associated Press
DAYTON, Ohio (AP)
— Dola Adebayo and Jedy
Cordilla each scored 22 points as Mount St. Mary’s defeated American University 83-72 in an NCAA Tournament matchup of No. 16 seeds at the First Four last night.
The Mountaineers (2312) earned a date with No. 1 seed Duke on Friday in an East Region game at Raleigh, North Carolina.
“Today when we walked out there for the national anthem, it was a little bit of a holy cow moment for me,” Mountaineers coach Donny Lind said. “Now to get to move on with this group and let them keep playing and to go down to Raleigh and play Duke is awesome. We’ve got to get ready and give them everything we’ve got.”
Geoff Sprouse led American (22-13) with 18 points on six 3-pointers off the bench. Elijah Stephens scored 12. “This is going to hurt for a while, but I’m going to flip the page,” Eagles coach Duane Simpkins said. “We’ve got six very good freshmen coming in, and we’re going to start to develop a game plan of how to get better. We’ll be back.”
American leading scorer Matt Rogers injured his right knee four minutes into the game. Rogers attempted to play through the pain, but with

5:28 remaining in the first half he fell to the court, was helped off and did not return. Rogers, who averages 17 points per game, finished with seven points in eight minutes. He watched the second half from the bench on crutches.
“Yeah, I feel terrible for him,” Lind said. “His versatility really stood out, and his will. He plays really, really hard. He’s emotional
in a great way for their team.”
Both teams were shooting better than 60% and went a combined 8 of 19 from 3-point range through the first 10 minutes. Dallas Hobbs beat the buzzer with a 3 to put Mount St. Mary’s ahead 48-38 at halftime. Hobbs finished with 17 points. “I was nervous,” Hobbs said. “It’s safe to say this
was the biggest game I’ve played in in my life.” Mount St. Mary’s was missing leading 3-point shooter Carmelo Pacheco, who hasn’t played since breaking a finger in the regular-season finale. But the Mountaineers stayed hot from long range in the second half. Malcolm Dread’s 3-pointer put them ahead 64-51 with 11:26 left.
“Obviously, offense was clicking pretty well for us,” Lind said. “But credit to American. They battled the whole time, obviously with losing (Rogers) early, but they showed no letup.”
Mount St. Mary’s improved to 3-6 in the NCAA Tournament. Up next, the ACC champion Blue Devils. “It means a lot to the university,” Hobbs said. “As
far as playing Duke next, our mentality is the same thing, just going in and following the game plan, follow what Coach says, and hopefully go out there and get a win.” FAMILIAR FOES
It was the 71st meeting between the Washingtonarea schools. American won the previous four matchups and leads the series 37-34.

field. Meanwhile, Milwaukee had a tough shooting night. Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo had 20 points to go with nine rebounds and seven assists but shot 5-for16 from the field. Former Wizards player Kyle Kuzma led the Bucks in scoring with a team-high 22 points, two boards and two assists in 37 minutes of action.
A dismal shooting performance by the Bucks had them playing catch up for almost the entire contest against the Warriors.
The Dubs took off early, earning a 15-6 lead after Podziemski drained a three off a Butler assist with 8:23 on the clock in the first.
Milwaukee gained some ground to shave the early deficit down to just 3 (2017) but ‘Buddy’ connected on a three to push the lead back to 7 (32-25) with 1:05 to go.
The Bucks trailed 32-27 headed into the second quarter. What once was
just a five-point lead at the end of one blossomed into a double-digit deficit once again in the second period. Butler made good on a close range two and extended the lead to 10 (3929) early in the quarter.
Golden State opened the second with a 10-2 run to create some space before ‘Buddy’ knocked down a pullup jumper at the 4:01 mark to shift the score to 52-35.
The Curry-less Warriors were in control of the ball game 58-44 at halftime after outscoring the Bucks 26-17 in the second period.
The Bucks came out of the locker rooms rejuvenated and used the long ball to get back into the game.
With the score at 62-46, Milwaukee got two threes from Kuzma and one from versatile big man Brook Lopez to chip into the Warriors advantage.
An unanswered 14-0 run placed the Bucks within 2 (62-60) but Draymond Green stopped the bleeding for the Warriors with a floater at the 5:46 mark.

The road team finally took the lead after point guard Damian Lillard connected on a three of his own at the halfway mark of the third period.
Despite the Bucks outscoring the Dubs 32-20 in the third quarter, the Warriors still led 78-76 with one to go. The Warriors threw

the final blow to neutralise Milwaukee in the fourth.
