Poem 202202092203 by Mouton Bazile

I’ve crossed the threshold and went through the doorway that leads me into the Truth of who I am. Now I stand here naked, soul bared and mind afraid because, I don’t want to be a failure among man. So, I’ve pushed through the B.S. and blockades I’ve built over the years and stand in the Garden of Beauty known as Life. Knowing that the only thing I have to truly fear is being the cause of my own future strife. For, everything else is just an experience and a lesson that is aimed at helping me achieve personal Evolution. And my job is to plant seeds that become beacons of Light for the others out there seeking their solution. And I do this by constantly seeking knowledge of me, that I may fulfill my part in THIS whole. For, I desire for others to know themselves as I know me and, I choose not to be the reason for another lost soul. And still, the struggle continues.

Fighting the Good Fight 1 Timothy 6:12

It is not easy to have the fortitude, training and desire to live a life worthy of your calling. In spite of the obstacles, continue to pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance and gentleness.

R

emain open to the possibilities, regardless of the circumstances. Like you, I wake up daily reevaluating and redefining. But post-pandemic, let’s also remember to relax and reconnect. There are always obstacles, but there are meaningful moments happening right now and endless opportunities to transcend.

Akoben I enjoy sports, LOVE competitive grappling and regret when I don’t train. There are so many reasons to pause your passions, but I was recently reminded by SamboFusion founder Vlad Koulikov that

“Fear doesn’t stop death, it stops life.” So, my friends...keep on living.

It’s not easy, but it’s worth it You are not alone. The rise of addiction, abuse, suicide and acts of violence suggest that our society is hurting. The trauma of our collective past (and present) deserves acknowledgement in order to heal. We are on this journey together. Our reimagined future begins today... and you, my friend, are the key.

The X Factor Creating A Trusted Model for Service Delivery

A review of the last decade of disaster recovery implementation revealed systemic discrimination, from the undisclosed FEMA rules that deny benefits to low-income communities of color to the long-term recovery decisions that permanently displace those communities.

O

ver the past ten years, the State of Texas has weathered the impact of five major hurricanes and two flooding events. Hurricanes – Katrina, Rita, Dolly, Ike, Harvey and the Memorial Day 2015 and April 15, 2016 ‘Tax Day’ floods. From 2010 - 2021 lowincome communities suffered from a constant replay of overlapping service

gaps during fast occurring weather disasters. As communities began to recover and rebuild, Texas learned that natural disasters revealed system inequalities in the communities affected.

Fair and Equitable Service Charity Productions has created a program model to be a trusted advocate for equitable service delivery spanning forty years.

Charity Productions has proven to implement timely day-to-day services that impact people’s lives across the service spectrum. Charity provides critical surge capacity support focusing on direct and referral services. Charity Productions fills the service gap of providing a fact-based policy grounded in FEMA and Homeland strategies for anyone that is interested in mitigating threats as well as public health and safety training and field exercises that reduce the loss of life and property.

Knowledge is a Powerful Tool Charity Productions was state chartered in 1984, and the first event was held at Texas Southern University, on December 1, 1984, reflecting Rosa Parks activism. The keynote speaker was the legendary voice in radio Jack The Rapper (AKA, Jack Gibson).

Charity Production creates the atmosphere that breeds confidence with technical information and practical applications on FEMA and Homeland Security recommended strategies.

Hazard Readiness “The greatest threat to long-term recovery and resiliency is citizens not knowing what they don’t know,” states Charles X White, the founder of Charity Productions. The second objective is overcoming predatory posture and aligning with high performing elected officials and capable leadership that are authentically service-focused in their duties to inform and train citizens. The third objective is sustained civic engagement by empowering citizens to be accountability leads and actively engage with elected officials to create innovative communication solutions that minimize services gaps and improve resiliency. According to a report by CNBC news, the cost of disasters is growing. Therefore, all people should know that a crisis, disaster or emergency is only one day, one season away from your door or neighborhood. Charity Productions implements a timely model to provide home owners, small

Community Preparedness Strengthening Planning and Citizen Capabilities is a national priority of FEMA. Charity Productions implements this requirement on a local level, assisting an urban area like greater Houston. The emphasis is on citizen evacuation,

shelter in place, mass care including sheltering, feeding, and related services and community preparedness. Charity Productions is one of the local FEMA partners that can mobilize quickly. Charity Productions empowers citizens so they are not victims and expand their knowledge to advocate for change from the status quo to corrective action implementation. change from the status quo

RESILIENCY Although disasters will continue to occur, actions that move communities from reactive approaches to disasters to a proactive stance, where residents actively engage in enhancing resilience will reduce many of the broad societal and economic burdens that disasters can cause. Charity Productions uses this as a guiding principle for its work and service to the underserved by curating innovative mechanisms to ensure timely, accurate and consistent disaster messaging across disciplines and jurisdictions.

Former Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge and Former President George Bush echoed each other on the fact that a manpower shortage exist in responding to disasters. Presidential Directives 5 and 8, were created after September 11, 2001, to protect the domestic homeland and foreign threats. There is a section in the policy that includes a partnership with citizens.

planning events, communities served by Charity Productions can easily shorten the time required to gain control over an incident and by providing favorable conditions for rapid and effective exchange of information about a situation. As a community stakeholder, Charity Productions can reduce uncertainty, expedite a response, and improve effectiveness during the critical stages after an event. This effort is key to success in protecting people and property during a crisis.

Corrective Action Implementation Over the past decade, the U.S. has seen housing growth move away from the suburbs back into the inner cities. While this phenomenon has led to local government and market forces revitalizing distressed neighborhoods, the push has also led to the areas gentrifying and becoming too expensive for low to middle income households and ripe for equity scammers. The COVID-19 pandemic has critically broken the medical response network and exposed the vulnerabilities of implementing mass health care services. Houston is in the highest threat level combination for the foreseeable future. Scammers and predators have emerged from both disasters and the pandemic. The pandemic has provided another opportunity for scammers to practice their predatory behaviors on victims, particularly with the black and Latino communities. The phrase predatory lending became an often used phrase in the 1980s and 1990s and has crept into some service providers’ behaviors as well as researchers, local jurisdictions, and aspects of the private sector. During every disaster, an element of society surfaces with all kinds of scams.

during times of disaster. Geographically, these neighborhoods span 80 zip codes in Houston. Civic groups and other organizations located within this underserved footprint are invited to join Charity Productions’ growing initiatives to coordinate the communication, surveys, and mobilization of these communities in order to provide equitable services during disaster and emergencies.

Join, Donate & Be The Change Charity Productions will continue to have its City Wide All Hazard Tabletop and Field Exercises and will announce their public health and safety task force of support service agencies to reinforce the mass care network. All are invited to sign up by contacting www.charity-productions.org, or call 713-292-3436.

Franklin started teaching young Black women cosmetology in their homes in San Antonio and the foundation for Franklin Institute was born.

Ahead of the Curve As an innovator and entrepreneur, Mme. Franklin had diverse services, even offering targeted beauty products to Black patrons. Forever evolving, Mme. Franklin continued to grow and opened the school’s first locations in the early 1920’s. She moved to Chicago and in 1934, the business in Chicago was handed down to her daughter, Abby, and son-in-law, J.H. Jemison. An NFT is a digital item of value that represents reallife assets such as music, videos and art. Encoded with the same underlying software as many cryptos, they are bought and sold virtually, often with some form of cryptocurrency. NFTS By Tarami Readus

Starter Pack

There’s been a lot of hype around NFTs. We’ve seen it in our social media feeds, heard about if from podcasts, and may even have a couple friends and family members that have bought some.

T

he acronym NFT stands for non-fungible token. Essentially, it is a digital asset backed by the Ethereum blockchain, whereby artists and companies a like can use them to provide added value to their communities. Their value is secured by the blockchain, which validates the true holders of the NFT.

Added Value One example is the game passes given out at major arcade and gaming venues. Lets say this company were to create only 10,000 game cards nationwide, each with unique designs and special perks like unlimited gaming, free food, a free trip, etc. No one can counterfeit the cards because of a special code on the card. Now these cards can be traded like baseball cards, going for higher value the rarer they are or the more perks they come with.

Kangaroo Heroes While there’s much speculation around the booming industry, one thing is certain, they’re here to stay. So we at Tré Magazine decided to dig deeper into this topic by asking one of the leaders in the space, Prince Donnell, founder of Jumping Jack Taxes and the Kangaroo Heroes NFT project. The biggest question out there in the NFT space is “How do I know if a NFT project is legit?” Don poses two concepts here, the first being community and the second being utility. He encourages anyone interested in NFTs to understand

Banksy, Trolley Hunters Lot sold at Sothebys for $6,698,400 This lot accepted cryptocurrency payment through a partnership between Sotheby’s and Coinbase Commerce and gave the winning bidder the option to pay the hammer price in Bitcoin, Ethereum, or USD Coin. The funds could be sent from an approved wallet or exchange, including: Coinbase, Coinbase Custody Trust, Fidelity Digital Assets Services, Gemini, or Paxos.

In an auction world first, Sotheby’s auctioneer Oliver Barker had field bids live from the New York saleroom in Ether (ETH) cryptocurrency for the auction debut of “Trolley Hunters” by the artist Banksy. The paradigm-shifting move marks the first time that a cryptocurrency will be used as the standard currency for bidding on physical artworks in real-time during a live auction and demonstrates the innovative spirit in which Sotheby’s continues to experiment with and expand the possibilities of the auction format.

Kangaroo Heroes is a collection of 5,000 Kangaroo NFTs that are unique and live on the Ethereum Blockchain. The Kangaroo Hero is based off the mascot of their company tax & accounting franchise Jumping Jack Taxes. As the Jumping Jack Tax Brand grows across the country, it would create more exposure for their Kangaroo Heroes NFT project.

the community involved in this project? Are there a lot of business owners? Learners? Educators? Skilled professionals? And secondly, what is the real value that this NFT project brings? For example, holders of the Kangaroo Heroes NFT will have access to private events focused on financial literacy, education, networking, business building and more. Holders would also receive 30% off of Jumping Jack Taxes service.

Read, Understand, Explore Another important part of this is education. Don and his team spent 50+ hours in webinars educating their community on what NFTs are, how they work, and the benefits of buying their NFT project. Don points out the fact that many in the

“How do I know if a NFT project is legit?” Black community aren’t privy to NFTs or even blockchain technology, so it’s imperative to spend time to educate your community, they are the primary backing to your brand and NFT project.

A New Engagement Model For anyone looking to transition into NFTs, it’s important to understand that NFTs are a consumer-focused technology. Think about who you are serving and who could potentially serve with NFTs integrated into your business model. Then explore ways you can leverage your brand

and NFT technology to provide added value to your community. Ask yourself, “how can someone profit by being part of my brand?”

The Future is Here The biggest takeaway from the conversation with Don on NFTs is that what once started out as a ‘buy and flip’ novelty will become integrated into our lives. Similar to the super-hype of the Internet in the 90s and its progression to its primary role in today’s society, NFTs are slated for a similar track. All that needs to happen now is for the larger companies like Amazon and Walmart to make their entry into NFTs. Once that happens, it will be a matter of utility-in other words, how will people benefit from investing in this digital Non-Fungible Token?

REIMAGINED WRITE THE VISION, & MAKE IT PLAIN Habakkuk 2:2-4

Third Ward, Texas is soon to be a forgotten memory. Can you make a difference? In the battle for its legacy, will you be remembered as a Bull, a Sheep or a Judas Goat?

H

ouston was founded in 1836 and incorporated in 1837. Its founders—John Kirby Allen and Augustus Chapman Allen—divided it into political geographic districts called “wards. Third Ward resides in the southeast quadrant.

A Legacy for Generations In 1872, freedmen Richard Allen, Richard Brock, Jack Yates, and Elias Dibble together bought 10 acres of parkland with $800 ($17,282.22 in 2013 inflation-adjusted dollars). Led by Yates, the men were members of the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church and the Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church. They had the selfless foresight to collaborate in order to commemorate

From housing and public health inequities to education and recent Harvey recovery efforts, policies that have been detrimental to the betterment of the people and communites of color in the Third Ward area have remained a barrier to sustained growth. The “Colored” population in 1910 was 22,929 and according to census records it exploded to 66,357 after World War I. The resources and programs that were provided to non-black veterans and discriminatory practices that still linger have a lasting impact.

In those 20 years of growth, many notable contributions to the community’s rich history and cultural legacy were established, in spite of the race-based institutional barriers. Homes, churches, businesses, entertainment venues, institutions of learning, and hospitals all contributed to this self-sufficient thriving community. Since integration, many have seen a steep decline in cultural unity and planning. Some residents are asking the question, “What is the fate of Third Ward, Texas?” others wonder... “Why does it matter?”

the end of slavery in the United States and provided a safe place for African American families and communities for 150 years. The land they purchased has supported recreational programs, events, concerts, after-school and summer programs for children, community meetings, and classes for youth and adults. Named Emancipation Park and located at 3018 Emancipation Ave in the Third Ward area of Houston, it is the oldest park in Houston and in Texas. From 1922 to 1940 (during portions of the Jim Crow period) it was Houston’s sole park for African Americans, since the city government declared its parks racially segregated in 1922. The City of Houston received the park as part of a donation and converted it into a municipal park.

Cities of the future: By 2050 the world’s population is expected to reach 9.8 billion. Nearly 70 percent of this booming population—6.7 billion people—is projected to live in urban areas. National Geographic asked experts at the architectural and urban planning firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill how they would design a city of the future, educated by lessons of the past and anticipating challenges of the future. Their vision is articulated on five scales, from surrounding ecosystems to building interiors, and 10 key principles. Learn more at www.nationalgeographic.co.uk/cities-of-the-future or www.som.com

RELOCATED GO & MAKE DISCIPLES OF ALL NATIONS Matthew 28:19

Is it too late or can Houston set the example for an inclusive community that does not erase and replace the accomplishments of African Americans and historically disenfranchised communities? Is now the time? Is Tré the place? Are you the one?

hey say that your kids should be able to take up where you left off! Your ceiling should be their floor. They shouldn’t merely follow you; they should use the foundation you laid to build something greater.

A Future Where Everyone Belongs Do you have skills and resources that carry you through and guarantee you an income...regardless of economy, race or location? As aliens in a foreign land, the rules of citizenship do not apply to you. Where do you need to live and what languages do you need to know to survive and thrive in the diaspora?

The forefathers of The Tré bought and built lands that have sustained their descendants for over 150 years and, for better or worse, this generation is where the legacy ends. No different than Houston’s Freedmans Town, South Africa’s Cape Town or New York’s Harlem, Third Ward, Texas may succumb to closure via unit-by-unit

acquisition of housing and intentional displacement. Gentrification is a long-term, patiently committed process of changing the character of a neighborhood through the influx of more affluent residents and businesses. Unfortunately, this process often shifts a neighborhood’s racial or ethnic composition and average household income by developing new, more expensive housing and businesses in a gentrified architectural style and extending and improving resources that had not been previously accessible.

Creating a Nomadic Nation Emancipation requires migration. With the current rate of transformation and documented institutional inequities, it seems inevitable that the cultural footprint and historic legacy of Third Ward will be lost in a generation. But, excellence is in

Global Citizen Third Ward’s history has always been one of achievement and self-reliance, and despite some years of decline due to postintegration disinvestment efforts, this spirit is being revitalized. From artists to activists, to doctors and musicians, the Tré has no shortage of talent and legacy. Many great

people have come from or contributed to the history and culture of Third Ward. At it’s earliest beginnings there were leaders and visionaries who worked to make the community a symbol of pride.

Nomadic Nation What started with a park soon evolved into the nexus of Black life and culture. Along this street one could find trade schools, insurance companies, amateur boxing, saving and loans, and so much more. It provided a place for Black entrepreneurs to realize their dreams of owning a business.

Unforgettable Culture

Each One Teach One

The people, places and events that created the distinct culture of the Third Ward, aka the Tré, has influence far beyond the neighborhood’s boundaries. Its arts, music, food, and cultural experiences are distinct and valuable characteristics that resonate with both residents and visitors.

Recently designated as a Cultural District in the State of Texas, Third Ward is still relevant and able to define its own history, legacy, boundaries and impact. We will explore more and welcome your thoughts and insights. Sign up for our newsletter at www.thetremag.com for more updates.

Meaningful Places In addition to the businesses there were institutions and hospitals that provided a place for students and professionals inside and outside of the community to advance and have access to important resources.

Can Houston grow and be inclusive without cancelling the culture and legacy of African Americans? Rep. Al Edwards, D-Houston, former state rep whose bill created Juneteenth holiday raises the arm of House Speaker Tom Craddick in victory after the close the 2003 session of the Texas House at the Capitol in Austin, Texas, Monday, June 2, 2003. CHRISTOBAL PEREZ/HOUSTON CHRONICLE.

Spreading the Word Fake News, Good News and the Truth.

Juneteenth, the commemoration of the announcement of the abolition of slavery in the state of Texas, and more generally the emancipation of enslaved African Americans throughout the former Confederate States of America. that June signaled freedom for Texas’s 250,000 enslaved people. Although emancipation didn’t happen overnight for everyone—in some cases, enslavers withheld the information until after harvest season—celebrations broke out among newly freed Black people, and Juneteenth was born. That December, slavery in America was formally abolished with the adoption of the 13th Amendment.

uneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday. On June 17, 2021, it officially became a federal holiday.

A Visionary Disruptor The year following 1865, freedmen in Texas organized the first of what became the annual celebration of “Jubilee Day” on June 19. In the ensuing decades, Juneteenth commemorations featured music, barbecues, prayer services and other activities, and as Black people migrated from Texas to other parts of the country the Juneteenth tradition spread.

A Visionary Disruptor In 1979, Texas became the first state to make Juneteenth an official holiday; several others followed suit over the years. In June 2021, Congress passed a resolution establishing Juneteenth as a national holiday; President Biden signed it into law on June 17, 2021.

Positive Disruptor By definition, a positive disruptor is someone who challenges current organizational trends and habits, and strives to find positive alternatives.

Preservation of the original architect of each home that meets specific requirements in the Holy Cross Heights subdivision has been honored. Each one of these homes has received a lawn sign that is proudly displayed. The Holy Cross Homeowners Association worked collectively on this project, gathering historical facts about the property and families. The effort has created a sense of community pride in this inner-city neighborhood near downtown and the capital of Texas. As a result, other East Austin neighborhoods are wanting to do the same. We will provide more background and “how to” in the next issue of the Tré.

Konstantina studied symbolism in order to have another language with which to communicate. What better language to reach everyone possible than hieroglyphics? The core principle of symbolism is story in pictures. Story pictures as well as the values embedded in stories meant be easily shared, without translation, through the subconscious. But more importantly - these jewels are beautiful, miniature artifacts of such integrity in their craftsmanship, materials and messages, and they will be treasured for generations to come. If a generation such as Gen Z covers eight to ten years, we are talking about lasting hundreds of years. This is longevity. This is art. This is sustainability in tangible, small, spatially economic artifacts that will carry the story of our humanity forward at our best and finest. These artifacts are made by human hand. There are just a few humans who still have the knowledge and skills to do this work. There are less than one hundred designers of Konstantina’s caliber in her industry, as her awards show. COACH CAM’S CAMPAIGN COMPRISES THREE MAJOR INITIATIVES: STEM 2.0 STEM – the acronym used in education to encompass the disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math – must reenvisioned and updated to STEM 2.0. This advance will better develop our students into entrepreneurs, business owners, and workers with even higher value. We will explicitly and intently contextualize STEM education within Entrepreneurship so that students are prepared to contribute to the economy and benefit from those contributions in ways that drive individual and collective prosperity in HD 132.

Go BIG In the true Texas spirit of doing things bigger and better than everywhere else, we will implement our BIG (Business Innovation Grants) program. Our vision for innovation in HD 132 centers on the small businesses that we love. Grants ranging from $500 to $5,000 will apply exclusively to innovations, such as converting paper-heavy businesses to more digital processes and helping laundromats switch to eco- friendly products, in both cases improving the enterprises’ efficiency and reducing their carbon footprint.

Advocate for Access This program focuses on empowering marginalized populations, such as people with cognitive disabilities, physical handicaps, or those who face discrimination on the basis of race or gender identity. Allowing them access to opportunity recognizes their human dignity, which in turn strengthens the moral standing of the dominant/mainstream culture. It is simply the right thing to do. In addition, expanding social and economic opportunity to all groups and individuals benefits HD 132 as a whole by creating a stronger social fabric and attractiveness to businesses that further fuel our prosperity.

Behind the Campaign Kamaria Monmouth, the founder and Chief Brand Strategist of Monmouth Consulting Group, a brand activation agency, is behind the #VoteCoachCam campaign trending on social media and in the news, which secured his spot as the Democratic candidate for HD 132's Texas House of Representatives.

Sustainablility at all Levels

Art, including dance, literature, music, culinary, theatre and the visual arts, provide uniquely interesting ways to represent the concerns of and/or what matters most to its creator(s).

In recognition of inequities that exist in our society and in furtherance of our mission, the Community Artists’ Collective, The Collective, strives to create and facilitate support mechanisms for artists of all underserved communities, with emphasis on African American visual artists and to make arts education more accessible to children and adults of such communities. We address societal inequities by curating exhibitions for artists of all levels, injecting artists’ sensibilities in the

community development process, providing educational opportunities where too few exist and by nurturing the entrepreneurial spirit in artists for a sustainable life’s work.

HUBERT HENRY HARRISON

“I hope your children are encouraged and inspired to pursue their dreams, as I did mine.” -Homer L. Randle III

The Voice of Early 20th Century Harlem Radicalism

HOMER RANDLE III HOUSTON Homer has published his first book, Homer Goes To Flight School, a children’s book which summarizes his dream of flying and what he experienced when he went off to Flight School, to pursue his dreams of becoming a professional pilot. While the book is written to inspire children to dream, we can all relate to the struggles that we face when pursuing our passions. Whether young or old, Homer Goes to Flight School, is a story that everyone can relate to. Written by a dreamer to inspire the dreamers of tomorrow, Homer Goes to Flight School tells a story of Faith, Determination, Persistence, Perseverance, and the belief in “Impossible is Nothing”

BOOK An immigrant from St. Croix at the age of 17, Hubert Henry Harrison was a West Indian-American writer, orator, educator, critic, race and class conscious political activist, and radical internationalist based in Harlem, New York.

Harrison played significant roles in the largest radical class and race movements in the U.S. He was the leading Black organizer in the Socialist Party of America. In 1917 he founded the Liberty League and The Voice, the first organization

and the first newspaper of the race-conscious “New Negro” movement. From his Liberty League and Voice came the core leadership of individuals and raceconscious program of the Garvey movement.

Known as the "New Negro Movement", named after The New Negro, a 1925 anthology edited by Alain Locke, the Harlem Renaissance was an intellectual and cultural revival of African American music, dance, art, fashion, literature, theater, politics and scholarship.

BY MAYA ANGELOU

You may write me down in history With your bitter, twisted lies, You may trod me in the very dirt But still, like dust, I’ll rise. Does my sassiness upset you? Why are you beset with gloom? ’Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells Pumping in my living room. Just like moons and like suns, With the certainty of tides, Just like hopes springing high, Still I’ll rise. Did you want to see me broken? Bowed head and lowered eyes? Shoulders falling down like teardrops, Weakened by my soulful cries? Does my haughtiness offend you? Don’t you take it awful hard ’Cause I laugh like I’ve got gold mines Diggin’ in my own backyard.

Alexis de Tocqueville

This isn’t a revolution of black against white; this is a revolution of right against wrong. Dick Gregory

Still I Rise

You may shoot me with your words, You may cut me with your eyes, You may kill me with your hatefulness, But still, like air, I’ll rise. Does my sexiness upset you? Does it come as a surprise That I dance like I’ve got diamonds At the meeting of my thighs? Out of the huts of history’s shame I rise Up from a past that’s rooted in pain I rise I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide, Welling and swelling I bear in the tide. Leaving behind nights of terror and fear I rise Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear I rise Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave, I am the dream and the hope of the slave. I rise I rise I rise.

Perry Belcher
