Trustees Report of the trustees for the year ending 31st March 2018.

The Trustees are pleased to present their annual report together with the consolidated financial statements of the charity for the year ending 31 st March 2017.

The charity constitutes a public benefit entity as defined by FRS 102. The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) issued on 16 July 2017 (as updated through Update Bulletin 1 published on 2 February 2016), the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102), the Charities Act 2011 and UK Generally Accepted Practice as it applies from 1 January 2015.

Chair’s Report Writing the Chair’s Report gives me a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the previous year; to remember the highlights and the struggles too!

As I look back on 2017/18, it was big for the Tin and an immense year for Coventry as a whole; everyone involved in the City of Culture bid, and in the cultural life of communities across the city, was on a nail-biting roller-coaster ride until the announcement back in December that Coventry will be the UK City of Culture in 2021 - the hard work has now started!

A really positive feature of the cultural landscape in Coventry is that organisations and individuals are now working together in ways that could not have been imagined just a few years ago. It has been wonderful to be part of that new collaborative, supportive environment all working together to make 2021 a fantastic success and striving to deliver Coventry’s exciting ten-year Cultural Strategy 2017-2027to build a vibrant, sustainable cultural life for all.

For our part, the Tin will be building on the successes of the Deliaphonic and Boudica events held in 2017/18 to make them bigger and better each year as we move up to 2021. Our aim is to nurture local technical skills as well as the participating artists’ careers. We want to build a strong framework for 2021 and the long-term future; we are particularly committed to addressing the gender gap in technical jobs to help move towards equality of access to employment in the cultural employment sector.

We have been delighted to be part of Coventry Music Hub’s education programme; the progress shown by the students has been remarkable and the performances given at the Tin have been exceptional.

Our iconic venue, the Coal Vaults, has been given a loving make-over with a new frontage together with refurbishments inside with improved equipment and lighting. We are very grateful to all those who helped to fund these improvements and I’d like personally to thank the contractors and our staff team who worked so hard to stretch the pennies so magnificently.

We delivered another exciting programme of music and other events in 2017/18, including a Criterion Theatre Production of Steady Rain by Keith Huff. I am hoping that this will mark the start of regular collaborations between the two charities.

The Tin’s Trustees and staff took part in the Tin’s first strategic planning event, supported by facilitators from Coventry University. It was heart-warming to hear how united everyone is in wanting the Tin to be a welcoming home-from-home for everyone coming through the door. I hear time and again that new people visiting the Tin feel the warm welcome that we seek to offer. I am confident that more and more people will seek us out as 2021 nears and the Culture Strategy begins to become a reality.

Music and the Arts have profound effects on individuals and communities and the Tin’s mission is fundamentally about improving people’s lives through all that we do, often in small ways that make a big difference.

I am particularly proud of the Tin’s regular Sunday night Open Mics and, as always, I was thrilled in 2017/18 to see people blossom over weeks and months as their confidence grew: performers, hosts, and Sound Engineers.

Performers are made to feel welcome and develop in skill and confidence; many go on to play booked sets in small venues, some, as their careers grow, to play support and then headline spots in the Tin and elsewhere. In other cases, the skills developed have helped them to achieve success in all sorts of other careers and lines of work.

As well as having opportunities to hone their performances, the hosts develop their presenting skills, learn to manage an event, to communicate with an audience and Sound Engineers, to nurture others’ talents. and to build broader promotional expertise. This all helps their own careers whether in music or other fields.

Perhaps even more importantly, given the shortage of Sound Engineers, the Open Mics provide invaluable practical experience for Sound Engineers at the start of their careers to complement their academic studies. It has been great to see strong academic successes being achieved and exciting careers being forged – partly working with the Tin and partly with other venues and/or artists.

I have been very proud to see young people thrive in their working lives as they apply the skills they learn from playing, performing or presenting in their studies and employment.

If you’ve not been to the Tin yet, please drop by to one of our events and I know you’ll be back for more.

Our Objectives The Objects of The Tin Music and Arts are:

1.

To advance education in music and arts for the public benefit by the provision of an arts facility.

2.

The promotion of health by the provision of tuition in music and arts.

3.

To promote social inclusion for the public benefit by preventing people from becoming socially excluded, relieving the needs of those people who are socially excluded and assisting them to integrate into society.

For the purpose of this clause ‘socially excluded’ means being excluded from society, or parts of society, as a result of one of more of the following factors: • • • • • • • • • •

Unemployment Financial hardship Youth or old age Ill health (physical or mental) Substance abuse or dependency including alcohol and drugs Discrimination on the grounds of sex, race, disability, ethnic origin, religion, belief, creed, sexual orientation or gender re-assignment Poor educational or skills attainment Relationship and family breakdown Poor housing (that is housing that does not meet basic habitable standards Crime (either as a victim of crime or as an offender rehabilitating into society).

The vision that shapes our activities remains the promotion and fostering of knowledge and appreciation of the arts (particularly music) for the education and recreation of the public. The Charity also has the general aim of contributing to the quality of life of the people of Coventry by expanding their horizons through the provision of exciting, challenging and accessible professional and community music and arts events.

In shaping our objectives for the year and planning our activities, the trustees have considered the Charity Commission’s guide on public benefit, including the guidance on public benefit and fee charging. The charity relies on grants and the income from fees and charges to cover its operating costs. In setting the level of fees, charges and concessions, the trustees give careful consideration to the accessibility of the events it programmes for those on low incomes.

Our Vision & Strategies • Present a broad range of inspiring, high quality music and art events for the enjoyment and education of the people of Coventry and the wider area.

• Offer opportunities and encourage a broad range of people to use our spaces for the purpose of music, arts and community events and activities.

• Provide affordable facilities for developing musicians and artists to practise.

• Deliver projects and activities and provide development opportunities to young people.

• Work with other community organisations to support their projects for the benefit of the people of Coventry and the wider area.

Our Artistic & Social Values Our artistic and social values are to create an environment which is inclusive and accessible for everyone to enjoy music and the arts.

Attitude is Everything We are committed to running a venue that is open for everyone to enjoy music. Attitude is Everything is a charity, which promotes and supports deaf and disabled people’s access to live music. The Tin has been awarded a Bronze standard for showing its continued commitment to having an accessible venue; we are now working towards achieving their Silver award.

Sustainability The Tin looks to use sustainable resources and recycle where possible; our music venue, The Coal Vaults, is powered by 100% green energy. When we need new items of furniture, we will try to buy or recycle pre-loved furniture. We also stock 2 local breweries beers, supporting local businesses and reducing the carbon footprints that our products have.

Our Staff & Volunteers The Tin has 6 Trustees, 2 Full time and 7 part-time members of staff. We also have 6 self-employed sound engineers who work with us on events at both our own and other venues.

The Tin regularly takes on work experience, intern and apprentices. Several of our employees started as apprentices. During 2017-2018 we had two placement through the Council’s Young People’s Employment Placement (YPEP) scheme; paid internships created to help young individuals, NEETS (Not in Education, Employment or Training), into creative roles within the arts industry. One young person was employed at the end of their placement and after a few months went on to pursue her music management career in Spain. The other is now a full time member of the team.

From these funded positions we have been able to develop a hard-working and diverse team at The Tin Music and Arts.

Both Deliaphonic and Boudica Festival were supported by small teams of volunteers. These volunteers has specific interests and talents to offer. Some volunteers have returned to volunteer for other events and projects.

High on the list of the Tin’s ambitions is to create a nationally recognised work programme for student/trainee sound engineers. We’ve already had five students/graduates on training to support them to complete their college/university work or gain valuable experience. Two of these have become regular house engineers.

Without the drive and dedication of the while team we couldn’t have achieved all that we have this past year we are very grateful to our staff and volunteers.

Our pricing policy Our ticket/admissions pricing policy reflects our strategy of enabling all within our community, whatever their means, to take part in our activities. Some events have to reflect the cost of the artists we pay to perform.

Full ticket prices to live music events cost between £0 - £15. Concessions are available for almost all of our events, offering discounted entry (and sometimes free entry) to events for some groups such as people who are unemployed or in receipt of benefits, under 16 and students. We offer free Personal Assistant tickets for all of our events.

Our Activities

This year, through our event programme, rehearsal room and well being classes, we have accommodated approximately 6,500 guests.

In-house music programme We hosted a varied programme of music events which combined high quality artists from around the world with local up-and-coming performers. There were sold out performances from Mercury nominated Jazz band The Comet Is Coming, rising indie stars The Howl & The Hum and Westerman and Afrobeat act Vaudou Game. We even hosted a night dedicated to New Zealand Psychedelia entitled ‘Psychzealand’. We succeeded in programming genres to suit a range of tastes and also gave opportunities to people with a range of abilities - from first performances (Sunday Open Mic), to experienced amateur artists, to established world touring musicians. As part of our Sunday Open Mic night, we have introduced 19 local performers as our ‘Spotlight’ artists.

We provide a professional welcoming and safe environment for local bands and community promoters, and encourage artists to collaborate and create work together. Our live performances are complimented by DJ sets and club nights.

We were finalist in the Coventry and Warwickshire Tourism and Culture Awards 2017.

Theatre & Film In February we collaborated with the Criterion Theatre to bring its acclaimed UK amateur premiere of Keith Huff’s dark Chicago police drama “A Steady Rain” to The Tin. “A Steady Rain” is a powerful psychological drama by a writer best known for the TV series “House of Cards” and “American Crime”.

In March Roots to Shoots held a special premiere screening of Brian Harley’s new short film ‘Sable’, which headlined a selection of short films made in Coventry and beyond. Roots to Shoots is always a great opportunity to give recognition to Coventry’s local short film makers and give the public chance to see their work.

Community Our community space continues to be a very versatile space, being the space used for a whole host of events. In 2017 we hosted numerous rehearsals; piano lessons taught by local music tutors, choir practise and play rehearsals.

As well as music classes, our weekly health classes continued with group tuition in Yoga and Tai Chi. Almost 1000 people attended our health classes over the last year.

Our community space was also used for a 3 week long Art installation in October by ‘Fiona Grady’ who constructed a solo exhibition for Coventry Biennial 2017. Light Shifts was an exhibition that combined a series of wall and window drawings to create an ambient and colourful space. The works included hand cut vinyl window drawings composed from geometric shapes that respond to the grid like window shutters within the space.

Our rehearsal room has also been in continuous use over the year, offering a practicing space to over 150 people playing music of numerous different genres.

The Tin was a finalist in the Coventry and Warwickshire Tourism and Culture Awards 2017 for ‘Best Live Music, Arts and Theatre’

Community Events The Tin Music and Arts has supported community events programmed by other people or organisations: • Bridges Over the Wall, a poetry and performance event as part of Positive Images Festival.

• University Student film screenings and music performances.

• Church choir practises every Friday • Rock the Vaults - which raised £1000 for the Lord Mayor’s chosen charities.

• ‘Suddenly My Thoughts Halt’ - a film screening as part of The Pod’s Mental Health Arts Festival ‘Scratch the Surface’ • Musicians Against Homelessness - a fundraiser for for the homeless charity Crisis.

• Coventry Biennial of Contemporary Arts - a site specific exhibition in the Community Space.

• Grapevine Diddy Disco - a daytime disco for children and parents.

As well as hosting community events in our own venue, we were involved in many other events happening all over Coventry - including : • Continuing our partnership with The Pod on their Dialogue project.

• Managed and programmed some of the acts and events on the Godiva Community Stage • Partnered with Spon Spun to help with sourcing musicians for the festival.

• Co-produced show with Creature Lab Records to showcase Resurrection Men at the West Indian Club.

• Co-produced a show with BHP at The Empire venue to bring Pulled Apart By Horses to Coventry.

In September 2017 we partnered with Coventry Music to launch ‘Live on Stage’ a Contemporary Music Industry project for children, It is funded by The Arts Council through Coventry Music Education Hub. The focus of the project is aiding young musicians as they form bands, develop their technical and song-writing skills, learn about the music industry and take part in live performances.

At the beginning of term the children formed bands, they then went through the process of rehearsing, recording and performing music together. The practical lessons were interspersed between music industry classes taught by a host of guests working in different sectors of the music industry. The bands had the opportunity to watch established bands set up for a live performance and sound check with the sound engineer. They then watched a live performance. At the end of term the groups performed their first gig, just before Christmas, in front of a huge crowd of family and friends.

Overview: A Celebration of Delia Derbyshire On the 5th May 2017, what would have been the 80th anniversary of Delia Derbyshire’s birth day, The Tin Music and Arts and Synthcurious held their first event at Coventry New Cathedral.

We marked the life and legacy of this most remarkable woman with an event involving artists she worked with and collaborated with, as well as leading electronic artists of today who are directly influenced by her work. The line-up included Derbyshire collaborators; Pete Kember (Sonic Boom) and Dr Peter Zinovieff. Derbyshire admirers; Hannah Peel, Jerry Dammers, Howlround and Jonny Trunk. This unique event attracted over 400 electronic music fans from around the country.

The New Cathedral, built in the Modernist style alongside it’s war-torn predecessor, is both a symbol of peace and reconciliation, and was the perfect setting for the culmination of our celebration of such an inspirational person.

The Deliaphonic 2017 project consisted of three elements – the live music event in the Cathedral, a schools electronic music project called ‘Sea of Sounds’ and a website which hosts a documentary film about the life and work of Delia Derbyshire as well as information, interviews with some of the performers and other people and organisations who are knowledgeable on the subject.

‘Sea of Sounds’ Schools Project The ‘Sea of Sounds’ schools project was a huge success and reports from the people who delivered this section of the project, parents and the schools involved was that the young people who took part learned a lot from it.

This part of the project was funded by Coventry Music Education Hub through Art Council England hub funding. Our aim for this part of the project was to introduce Delia to children who were not likely to have heard of her before and only two of the children had.

Due to timetable pressures and lack of music staff in some schools, we struggled to engage with 4 schools but we found 2 wanting to be involved. One of the schools was Delia’s school, Barr’s Hill and they found time to do two sessions. For the forth ‘session’, we decided to open up spaces to children from any school in the city by delivering an after school session in our own rehearsal space at The Tin Music and Arts.

The project was delivered by Tim Seeley who is a secondary and primary school music tutor who teaches guitar, bass guitar, piano and keyboard. His passion is modular synthesisers and music technology and so was the ideal person to deliver the project. Tim started each of the project sessions by talking about Delia Derbyshire.

His subsequent sessions then discussed the techniques that Delia used with examples of her methodology using modern technology. Each student was giving a document that explained the techniques and gave links to find free software so that they could continue to progress their work after the project had finished.

Instrumental and vocal performance workshops.

Exploration of aleatoric composition methods and performance.

The final performance, on 5th May at Coventry Cathedral was a realisation of all the sounds collated and collected by each group using the recorded and edited material used from schools. The children each had their own digital trigger pad or mini keyboard meaning that they could manipulate and filter each of these sounds live.

We worked with over 40 children in total but not all of whom were available to attend the live performance at the Cathedral.

In addition to the ‘Sea of Sounds’ project Howlround came to the Tin on the 6th May, the day after they performed at the Cathedral, to deliver a tape manipulation workshop.

18 Deliaphonic Event 2017 On the 5th May, at our event at Coventry Cathedral, we conducted a research questionnaire, both in paper form on the night and in a digital format for people to complete after the event. The questionnaire was anonymous and we did this so that people would be able to answer honestly.

Of the 466 people who attended we had 64 complete the questionnaire.

There were nine questions but we were mainly looking for three pieces of information – where people were from, whether they had learnt anything new about Delia Derbyshire and what they thought of the event.

Where people came from Most people were from Coventry and the surrounding areas.

Some people travelled from as far as Manchester and Brighton.

Did people learn anything new 3 people said they had never heard about Delia and 10 people said they had heard of her but didn’t know that she was from Coventry. 43 people said that they had learnt something new from the event.

What people thought People were very generous with their answers. Some of the comments were conflicted – mainly with regards to the venue and the standard of the technology used but also with regards to performers. Overall the comments are very positive.

Overall we were happy with what the results of the questionnaire indicated however, we were disappointed with our audience demographics. We have learnt that for our next event we would like to work on attracting a more diverse audience.

Boudica Festival Overview: Celebrating the Talent of Women in the Music Industry

In 2017 we launched Boudica Festival (named after the warrior queen thought to have been defeated in battle just north of Coventry). With an all female and non-binary line up, Boudica Festival is a unique event that gives a platform to and celebrates the underrepresented talent of women in the music industry both on the stage and behind the scenes. The first Boudica Festival took place in September 2017 at Fargo Villages ‘Box’ venue.

A long term aim of the festival, as well as having a stellar female line-up, is to form an all female events crew, using the expertise of female sound engineers, lighting technicians and stage managers. As well as providing a platform, we want to highlight the opportunities available to women within the music industry other than performing.

Female and non binary artists have always been underrepresented in all aspects of the music industry. Low female representation is an industry wide problem and something that needs to change.

Our first event showcased 6 touring bands as well as 3 local bands on the main stage and an all female open-mic to open proceedings.

Night Flowers

20 The Great Escape and Warm Up Events In the run up to the festival, we were awarded funding from Coventry City Council’s Go and See fund. This meant that the organisers of the festival were able to take a trip to Brighton to attend The Great Escape as delegates. This was an important experience for us as it enabled us to experience a showcase festival first hand and watch up and coming female acts which then went on to inform our programming.

We also programmed events throughout the year that took place in the run up to and after the festival. Most were live music events but we also screened ‘Hear To Be Heard’, a documentary about The Slits. These performances have helped to spread the word about the festival, which will hopefully enable us to build on attendance.

Venue Refurbishment

In December 2016 we were lucky to receive funding from Awards for All to refurbish the venue front and interior lighting. The work took place throughout 2017.

Frontage: The front of the venue was recladded in Siberian larch wood and fitted with a new poster board.

Bar Area: The floor and bar top were sanded down.

Shelving and a new sink area added behind the bar, as well as new lighting fixtures and a fresh coat of paint.

New Lighting: New LED par can lighting and desk installed.

The trustees present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the period ended 31 March 2018.

The year to March 2018 has been a good consolidation year for the Charity and the balance sheet remains healthy given the size of the Charity. Balances from 2016/17 have been well used with the Coal Vaults having a much needed face-lift and the sustainability grant from Coventry City Council put to good use. Included in the reserves total of £29,863 at 31/03/2018 is £13,117 in relation to the Coventry Music Education Hub. These funds will be spent in 2018/2019 as the programme develops. The remaining funds cover the basic running and staffing of the venue. The Charity is reliant on grants and donations. Programming levels are determined by the funds available from this income and any surplus from ticket sales, room hire and bar revenue. 24 Independent Examiner’s Report of the Trustees of The Tin Music and Arts

I report on the accounts for the period ended 31 March 2018 set out on pages 18 to 26.

Respective Responsibilities of Trustees and Examiner The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year (under Section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act)) and that an independent examination is required.

It is my responsibility to: - examine the accounts under Section 145 of the 2011 Act - to follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commission (under Section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act); and - to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

Basis of the Independent Examiner’s Report My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a true and fair viewnd the report is limited to those matters set out in the statements below.

Independent Examiner’s Statement In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention: (1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that, in any material respect, the requirements - to keep accounting records in accordance with Section 130 of the 2011 Act; and - to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and to comply with th accounting requirements of the 2011 Act have not been met; or ( 2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES Basis of preparing the financial statements The financial statements of the charity have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRSSE) ‘Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard for Smaller Entities (the FRSSE) (effective 1 January 2015)’ and the Charities Act 2011. The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention.

Income All incoming resources are included on the Statement of Financial Activities once the charity has entitlement to the funds, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably.

Expenditure Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to that expenditure, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably.

Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all cost related to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources.

Tangible fixed assets Depreciation is provided at the following annual rates in order to write off each asset over its estimated useful life.

Plant and machinery - 25% on cost Fixtures and fittings - 25% on cost

Stocks Stocks are valued at the lower of cost and net realisable value, after making due allowance for obsolete and slow moving items.

Taxation The charity is exempt from tax on its charitable activities.

Fund Accounting Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees.

Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes.

Hire purchase and leasing commitments Rentals paid under operating leases are charged to the Statement of Financial Activities on a straightline basis over the period of the lease.
