COMMERCE – For the Jefferson Lady Dragons’ softball team, it was a short but successful outing at the Commerce Invitational last Saturday. The Lady Dragons played in just two games, but looked good in both outings, beat-
ing Region 8-AAA rival Hart County, 9-6, and in-county rival Commerce, 9-2. Commerce on the other hand split its four games of the event. The Lady Tigers began the invitational with a 13-4 rout of North Springs last Friday. Then, they suffered the 9-2 loss to Jefferson and were routed 12-0 by Hart County. They defeated
Region 8-A opponent Towns County, 6-4, to end the invitational. “We’re just real young but we’re getting better,” Commerce head coach Pam Canup said. “(We have) had some injuries, so we have players playing in positions that they probably won’t play when everyone is healthy again.”

play by finding Riley for a 70yard grab-and-go touchdown (21-7) with 16 seconds left in the first half. The Hawks kept the momentum rolling in the second half, scoring 21 points in a 5:20 span. Thomas’ blocked punt return for a touchdown started the scoring with 8:55 left in the third quarter. His return bumped the Hawks’ lead to 28-7. Then, the Turley-to-Snyder connection sent the lead to 35-7 with 6:18 left in third quarter and Anderson’s 66yard interception return at the 3:35 mark finished the Hawks’ scoring-barrage at 42-7. The Hawks finished the
game on a 28-0 run. “We were fast, we were physical, we tackled,” Anderson said about the defense, “open-field tackling was great, but it was all because of Coach (Bill) Stewart yelling at us in practice, getting to us, just making sure we’re doing everything right.
“Overall, it was a good game.” Anderson said it was “good” to play in the Georgia Dome, but he didn’t have “jitters” before the game, which he wasn’t sure why, but he was “ready to play.” Mill Creek hosts West Forsyth tomorrow night.
game at 7-7 with 4:54 left in the second quarter. East Jackson had one more opportunity in the first half to score, but failed to do so after a missed field goal attempt. After forcing a quick three-and-out early in the second half, the Lions’ offense orchestrated another five-play drive to go back up 14-7 with 7:29 remaining in the third quarter. The Eagles responded with a Saavedra 66yard quarterback keeper on fourth-and-3 to cut the gap to one, 14-13, but a missed extra point kept the game in the Lions’ favor. The Eagles managed to slow down DuBose
and the Lions on the following drive to get the ball back, but a fumble on the first play of the drive led to a 5-yard touchdown from DuBose to put the Lions up 21-13 with 10:01 remaining in the game. The Eagles’ offense had three more possessions in the fourth quarter, but failed to put anymore points on the board. Hughes stressed how important it is to play smart and to not make silly plays in a closelycontested game. “I’m proud of our effort tonight,” Hughes added. “We have built this team from the bottom up over the past three years and it is going to pay off in the very near future. I’m really excited to see what is around the corner for us.”
