MISSION Our mission is to transform lives to end homelessness one person at a time. We provide food, shelter, clothing, transportation, job readiness training, counseling, healthcare, temporary housing, and affordable housing to those in need.

“I have set the Lord continually before me; Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.“ - Psalm 16:8 s we reflect on 2020, what an incredible year! In a year where uncertainty abounded, we resolved not to be shaken.

We continually set our eyes on the Lord and the mission He has given us.

In December, the spotlight was turned on the women and children during the Project Vintage Runway Fashion Show.

Virtual attendees heard the story of how these women defied the odds and were transformed from Homeless to Hopeful.

We called on our prayer partners to intercede for us, for the Mission, for our disciples and for our country. We saw the Lord move in miraculous ways. Our financial supporters, though enduring times of hardship themselves, continued to faithfully support the work we are doing.

As we look forward to 2021, we remain focused on seeking out those in need and offering them the hope of a better tomorrow. We have created strong community partnerships to support our mission to transform lives to end homelessness one person at a time.

For ten months, UGM Dallas sheltered in place 24/7 as we Shielded the Homeless during the COVID-19 global pandemic.

The community stepped up to provide our staff and residents with PPE and supplies to ensure the health and safety of everyone. The community support and compassion for our homeless brothers and sisters was remarkable. Groups who faithfully volunteer at the shelter found new ways to meet needs and minister while complying with COVID restrictions.

EMERGENCY SHELTER

Transitional Support Union Gospel Mission Dallas is the oldest and largest provider of continuous emergency shelter services. We provide emergency services to the homeless community including meals, showers, clothing, GED classes, medical care, counseling, job development and training, case management, transportation, chapel services, and mentoring.

Shelter - Each night, hundreds of men, women, and children find safety from the streets of Dallas in a warm bed after having a nice meal. We sleep more than 450 individuals on a regular night and an additional 50 during inclement weather.

Individual Assessment/Counseling - Each guest is assessed to determine how we can best serve his or her individual needs through the support of professional volunteers in our community.

"I was out of a job and ended up sleeping on a train because I don't have family here. If I didn't have UGM Dallas, I would be like so many homeless I saw out on the streets."

Life Skills and Chapel - Our staff and volunteers focus on the comprehensive needs of an individual, as well as addressing education, financial management, chronic illness education and nutrition. We understand that our client’s most basic needs are a safe place to sleep, a hot meal and the hope the gospel offers.

The Center of Hope provides a 90-day emergency shelter program for women and children (under the age of 17) to sleep, eat a hot meal, receive clothing and hygiene products, and access to a warm shower.

UGM DALLAS PROGRAMS

UGM Dallas partners with local businesses, non-profit organizations, business leaders, volunteers, and churches to provide those participating in our Discipleship programs with a skill set that will help them find employment.

Education - In the 21st century, a lack of computer skills severely limits a person’s ability to qualify for most jobs. All of our shelters have on-site learning centers where clients can learn computer skills, basic math and reading, how to use an online job bank, and computer literacy work.

Childcare and Development - The Crystal Child Development Center (CDC) is an on-site, state licensed child care center for children from birth to kindergarten.

Children in the CDC learn about the abundance of God’s love through our Christian-based curriculum. Bible stories and basic skills, such as recognizing colors, shapes, letters and numbers, are taught daily. Preschoolers learn counting, writing letters, and how to cooperate and play with others.

Discipleship - Our shelters offer long-term, self-paced, faith-based, rehabilitation programs called Discipleship.

These programs are designed to help our clients end their personal struggles with homelessness, first by establishing and nurturing a relationship with Jesus Christ, then by learning the skills necessary to re-enter society and live an independent life. This process includes graduating from the Mission’s Learning Center, obtaining a job and living in a transitional living facility. Prior to graduation from the program, each disciple must be involved with a local church, have a savings account, hold a job, and be living independently.

Transitional Housing - UGM owns and manages three transitional living sites. Two are apartment complexes and one is a residential home that has been converted to accommodate four disciples (each with their own bedroom). The Cimarron Apartments in East Dallas are a 43-unit complex combining one and two-bedroom units.

The Riverpoint Apartments, in North Lake Highlands, is a 34-unit complex.

Medical Care - Each of our two main shelters, Center of Hope and Calvert Place, have an on-site, free medical clinic, which is available to both clients and disciples. The clinics are under the supervision of UT Southwestern Medical School. Both clinics offer our residents basic and preventative medical care as well as medical education. We have recently added dentistry to the program.

Job Readiness Training and Job Placement In addition to learning skills in automotive repair, construction and hospitality trades, participants are also taught basic skills that will enable them to succeed.

They learn about accountability and the importance of timeliness in completing their work. Training in these areas produces self-confidence and self-worth.

DISCIPLESHIP PROGRAM

rifah truly embodies the transformation from homeless to hopeful that many experience at UGM Dallas. A year and half ago, Arifah experienced many trying circumstances. She and her children found themselves living in their car in a Walmart parking lot until they also lost their car.

500 Arifah, being the strong woman she is, found her way 400 to the Center of Hope Women & Children's Shelter where she completed the discipleship program, job training and went on to mentor other ladies at the 300 shelter.

UGM Board Member and Project Vintage Runway 200 Creator, Margaret McKoin, asked Arifah to participate in the annual fundraiser fashion show, Project Vintage Runway. Ms. McKoin said she saw so much potential 100 in Arifah that she hired her to manage the Project Vintage Runway Boutique, a retail store that donates proceeds from sales to Center of Hope.

After finding out Arifah takes two buses and a train to get to work and has never been late a single day in a year, the Founder of the Ghetto Hero Foundation, Mr. Aceito Thomas, presented her with a car of her own. Now it only takes her 20 minutes to get to work instead of two hours.

DISCIPLESHIP PROGRAM

evin’s story of becoming homeless mirrors that of many that call the Mission home. Kevin was a hard-working truck driver for 30 years but found himself unable to work due to knee trouble. After being released from the hospital, he was referred to UGM Dallas because he had nowhere else to 2,175 go. He spent 6-8 weeks in a wheelchair and continued to grow stronger every day, eventually progressing to a walker.

“When you’re disabled, you want to feel strong,” stated Kevin. “Every day I appreciate the passion that the pastors have for you in this place.”

“I was born and raised in Fort Worth, but this is my home right now: healing wise, pastor-wise and ministry-wise,” Kevin noted. “UGM is here for me.

They are here for everybody. What they have for you is not just work opportunities but the gospel.”

Kevin shared how Union Gospel Mission Dallas helps the residents to find jobs through job fairs and the workforce. He would encourage others who are struggling to visit UGM Dallas to learn how they can get help.

DISCIPLESHIP PROGRAM At UGM Dallas, we get to the heart of the matter. Our Discipleship Program is an 18 month to 2-year program that begins with a heart transformation established and nurtured by a life changing relationship with Jesus Christ.

The self-paced program allows disciples to obtain the skills needed to live productively and independently.

Just as Jesus walked beside his disciples teaching and training, the team at UGM Dallas invests in the lives of these disciples, walking beside them and training them.

VETERANS PROGRAM UGM Dallas feels a weighty responsibility to honor the men and women who have served our great nation and then find themselves homeless. Partnering with the Veterans Administration Department, UGM provides short-term emergency housing for Veterans as they seek stable employment, permanent housing and work toward independence.

UGM Dallas houses 30-40 veterans at any given time. To support the VA Per Diem Program, UGM offers crisis stabilization, substance abuse counseling, case management, transportation and clothing assistance and faith-based counseling upon request.

P R O J E C T V I N TAG E R U N WAY B O U T I Q U E In 2020, the former Vintage Ten retail store was transformed into the Project Vintage Runway Boutique. The new retail store has more of a boutique feel that offers both high end and affordable fashions and accessories. Upon entering, customers will find full ensembles perfectly created for a job interview or an elegant event. Project Vintage Runway Boutique accepts donations of gently used clothing and accessories while also selling brand new high fashion collections. The boutique is home to local artist, Mona Jain Jewelers, who creates unique pieces for women. Proceeds from sales at the boutique benefit UGM Dallas Center of Hope Women & Children’s Shelter.

P R O J E C T V I N TAG E R U N WAY During a global pandemic, the creators of Project Vintage Runway fashion show were able to successfully assemble top designers to transform the women of UGM Dallas Center of Hope Women and Children’s Shelter to reflect their journey from Homeless to Hopeful. The annual fundraising event was also transformed from being a highly attended red carpet Dallas event to a nationwide virtual event. The event focused on the stories of these inspirational women who have persevered through incredible circumstances to come out stronger.

“2020 was especially challenging for the women at UGM Dallas Center of Hope Women and Children’s Shelter,” noted Bruce Butler, CEO of UGM Dallas. “The opportunity for them to receive a makeover and hit the runway in the incredible designs, with a nationwide audience cheering them on, was a beautiful embodiment of their transformation from homeless to hopeful.”

IN MEMORY KIMBERLY “KIM” HARRIS

In November, UGM Dallas lost a very special team member, Kimberly “Kim” Harris. Mr. Harris was a faithful servant at UGM since 2010, serving first under the leadership of the late Brother Bill Thompson. Kim started as a security guard at the Mission and then served as an intake manager, chaplain and associate pastor.

Kim’s heart for the homeless was felt by all those he welcomed as they walked through the door. He passionately shared the hope offered through Jesus Christ and diligently worked with UGM disciples to transform their lives.

His absence has left a void within the ministry, but the UGM team is committed to honoring his memory by sharing the love of Jesus that he cared so much about.
