High school athletes juggle their club team, school team, and homework year round. This gives little time to do other things non-related to sports or even be apart of their school’s team. “The bad part is they just never take the time off that I think kids need in high school. I think bodies need to heal, especially arms need to heal in baseball. High school kids need to be high school kids,” said Jeff Baumgartner, varsity baseball coach. Some student athletes also don’t see the point in playing for a school team because they feel it doesn’t help them become any better at their particular sport and it takes away from playing with their club.

“I didn’t play because I didn’t see the benefit in it. It was pretty much for fun and didn’t really have any intentions to make me a better player. It gets in the way of playing on my club team,” said Kezmen Lozevski, freshman club soccer player. But for the students who do play school and club, they take whatever time they can get to do school work or participate in other activities. “I come home from school, do my homework, and then I get ready and go to practice. On days when I don’t have practice, I’m weightlifting,” said Kasey Jahnke, sophomore volleyball player at OHS and club. There is a speculation that a student must be on a club team in order to be a contender for a varsity team at OHS. The experience and practice from Jump to Page 7
