letter/ Dear readers, We are as surprised as you are, but yes, it is time to give credit to the idiom “time flies.” April marks the beginning of the second quarter of the year. What…? We are sure you are feeling the tides of time flash before you just like us, and we hope it has been a fantastic 2019 so far. But, for those who are fretting over not being on track with making the year count, we’ve got good news! Start now… Make April the time of new beginnings, take on a challenge to reset your goals for the year, fine-tune them and re-establish your motivation towards those goals. You’ve got this… As the weather gets warmer, filling our wardrobes with new beautiful items is one of our favorite things to do. That’s why we have rounded up our favorite collections be it fashion or jewelry, and we’re allowing you to get spoiled this month, yes indeed we are… Slick straight hair and healthy skin... beauty trends are constantly evolving, and we love that! And you know we have your back when it comes to matters of health, seeking out the appropriate doctor is just what you need to solve your problems. Dr. Suraj V. Davis from Royale Hayat gives us an in-depth on Alopecia Areata and how it is treated. Not surprising, April means Aphrodite’s month – the symbol of love and beauty. No wonder we were tempted to tap into the ever-growing beauty industry as we keep hearing about new and upcoming makeup artists and products. One that caught our attention this time - Sabika Al Rashed a.k.a. Seby! Her flawless modern techniques make her unique, and we had the pleasure of having a chat with her, she told us all about her journey, including her beauty serum. So, there you go, a motivated head-start, a fashionable attitude, and pampered skin; don’t hold back and have a fabulous start to the rest of the fabulous year.

The Modern Hippie Who doesn’t like a little fringe mixed with printed fabrics? Hippies have a distinguished sense of style that has been talked about, cherished, and styled for ages. This season, on the runways, we’re seeing a lot of it come back... but wait, it’s not your usual flowy sundresses and flower crowns. We’re noticing the return of the hippie trend but with a modern twist. How can that be possible? Allow us to explain. Fringe fringe fringe - have you seen Helmut Lang’s leather skirt? A mini skirt with fringe up to your ankles. Add a loose printed top, and you’ve got yourself the perfect modern hippie look. Super long cardigans and kimonos have always been our go-to for when we’re having a lazy day. Go for the grungy prints, wear them with a pair of boots, leggings and a basic tee, and you’re good to go. Play around with fabrics, this is one trend that you can never go wrong with! the talk - page 22

Our personal obsession! Go on any social media and hashtag feathers, trust us you’re not going to be seeing any birds. This trend comes and goes but it never disappears! Many may feel it’s a bit too much but worn correctly it is one trend worth trying out. Let’s start with a dinner at a fancy restaurant, because, let’s face it, we’re not wearing feathers to lunch. A Milly black blazer with feathers on the sleeve is the perfect addition to an LBD with nude pumps. Another option would be to just wear shoes with feathers such as the Jimmy Choos that brides are wearing this season. Any top with feather-y details is a good option for a fun night out, dress it up with heels, down with flats. As for evening-wear, go all out! From high-end brands to high-street, feathers are everywhere. If you’re going for a simple look, opt for a jumpsuit with feather details. Slick your hair back to show off the details. If you want to turn heads, opt for a gown such as Ralph & Russo with feathers at the bottom half to the train. the talk - page 23

CH Carolina Herrera Spring/Summer 2019

An ode to the parade of freedom and femininity that walks New York City’s streets and thrives in its urban art scene. Indubitably, this collection was designed to pay tribute to unconditional femininity and timeless elegance. An ode to the parade of freedom and femininity that walks New York City’s streets and thrives in its urban art scene. Indubitably, this collection was designed to pay tribute to unconditional femininity and timeless elegance. Ellsworth Kelly with his abstract work, the precious delicacy of Georgina O’Keeffe’s colors and flowers, and the famous pop sculpture LOVE by Robert Indiana in the heart of Midtown come together with John Miller’s contemporary art, where invented spaces with an expiry date are built in the most unusual locations, turning them into unexpected gardens brimming with flowers. The influence of these artists is reflected in different details such as color, prints and even the use of the logo. As the different sections of the collection come together, we get to witness its peak right at the beginning of spring. The bag is at the core of everything, and its personality dictates the style of each drop. the talk - page 24

Givenchy

Spring/Summer 2019 An abstract idea of mirrors informs the Spring/Summer 2019 women’s ready-to-wear collection by artistic director Clare Waight Keller. Displaying both the women and men’s collections together was to manifest the notion of the Givenchy couple; the designer mirrors female and male in each other and cross-pollinates their gender characteristics. It allows for properties conventionally comprehended as female or male to morph in a nonchalant approach to gender codes, reflective of an evolved global mentality. The transition evokes memories of iconoclasts of the past, enabling a free interaction of eras across the collection.

the talk - page 26

Floral prints, once a trademark of the female wardrobe, enter into both women’s and menswear. Signifying a further take on mirroring, the patterns draw together, disappear, dissolve and explode into circular flower formations. Morphing into silver embroideries, the theme of reflection is expressed in metallic elements achieved through artisanal processes: dresses in silver lace lacquered in silver and applied with silver resin create a foil effect, while silver outerwear comes to life through leather lamination. Mirror embroidery appears in menswear. Reflected in the show set, a series of rooms draped in painted canvases like the uncovering of an old house, colors materialize in a faded warm palette of beige tones, deep yellows, dark greens, lavender, salmon and indigo blue. Fabrics largely emerge in cottons and jerseys. Wide leather belts appear throughout, alongside work totes and small squashed ziptop bags. A new bag, the WHIP, is introduced, in a boxy construction with a long front flap and a cutout handle. Jewelry is dramatic, exemplified in oversized chandelier earrings and corresponding rings in flattened metals, styled across the collection. the talk - page 27

COS Collaboration with Architect Arthur Mamou-Mani During Salone del Mobile 2019 For this year’s edition of Milan Design Week, COS will present a digitally fabricated architectural installation by French architect Arthur Mamou-Mani and his eponymous studio, marking the London-based fashion brand’s eighth consecutive installation during Salone del Mobile and its first collaboration with Mamou-Mani.

the talk - page 28

Mamou-Mani’s upcoming installation imagines the future of design, technology, and material innovation to create an ethereal journey; utilizing structural form to transport the viewer from the 16th century courtyard of Palazzo Isimbardi - into the surrounding garden, bridging architecture and the natural world. The pathway created will be constructed of 3D printed bio-plastic modules, generated through an open-source software that uses parametric design: an algorithmic process that ensures structural suitability and optimizes material use. Arthur Mamou-Mani noted, “Our work delves into the architect as maker and the holistic nature of design processes. I hope that the combination of distributed large-scale 3D printing with bio-materials and opensource parametric tools will offer an insight into the future and showcase how this digital craft can have a positive impact on the world.

Bally The SS19 Cecyle The Cecyle bag by Bally is shaking up its look for Spring/ Summer 2019. After a successful debut in Autumn/Winter 2018, the unique half-moon shaped saddlebag, named after the founder Carl Franz Bally’s beloved wife Cecyle Bally, has upped the ante with several new details, materials, and sizes. Much like Cecyle Bally’s impeccable taste and her passionate pursuit of finely crafted leather, the Cecyle bag is quickly becoming a bar-setting style at Bally as an example of the Swiss brand’s sophistication with elevated luxury goods. Its distinct shape makes it stand out among the handbag selection in today’s high-end leather goods market. The keyholeshaped magnetic closure continues to be a remarkable detail of the Cecyle and a new style signifier at Bally. the talk - page 30

Bottega Veneta Spring 2019 Time - indefinable and transient the ultimate in luxury. Bottega Veneta’s Spring 2019 campaign, the first executed under the Creative Direction of Daniel Lee, focuses on that notion. The result is, paradoxically, timeless - an examination of the codes and heritage of Bottega Veneta, on what it represents in the fashion landscape of today. It is a palate cleanser, a reset of our perception, a re-establishing of identity for now. Photographed by Tyrone LeBon, these natural, unselfconscious pictures seem like fragments of a larger narrative as if scenes captured from a film. Influenced by Italian neorealist cinema - and the way of life those films reflect - each image encapsulates and cements a different character, a persona, that represents a facet of Lee’s vision for the house. Recorded over several days in a private house on the Neapolitan island of Ischia, these images are dynamic, essential and free. They have a quiet confidence. Fashion is stripped to its purest form, laying out the essential elements of Bottega Veneta: a fine knit, a coat, the intrecciato leather. Incidental, almost, the clothes and accessories become part of a whole - part of the context, part of a life. Expressing a sense of intimacy, a heightened reality, these images delineate the spirit of Bottega Veneta.

Kristina Fidelskaya Spring/Summer 2019 Attitude is identity. In a world choked by material overabundance, luxury is no longer in maximalist declarations that scream the wealth of their owner, but in the small gestures that speak of care, of attention, of love. Selfpossession becomes the only currency by which to measure true worth.

the talk - page 32

Kristina Fidelskaya’s Summer 2019 collection transmutes the definition of a style into a declaration of what makes the everyday real. Gone are the trappings of passé luxury. Subtle details – raw selvage turned into a jour-de-Venise border, fabric so beautiful it removes the need for lining, the substantial hand of even the lightest fabrics ‘stand out’, but only to the precious few who have learned to appreciate fashion’s highest crafts. It is a reminder that we are valued not for any accumulation of material goods but for the imprint we leave on the world. In her Summer collection, Kristina Fidelskaya stays true to the one constant: femininity seen as both statement and art, a quality that remains through time. the talk - page 33

Salvatore Ferragamo Spring/Summer 2019 At Salvatore Ferragamo, the future is drawn as powerfully from elements of a rich tradition as it is from a vision for the world of tomorrow. It is from this positive tension that Paul Andrew and Guillaume Meilland propose a Spring/Summer collection for women and men that conveys innovation and high craft in light, effortless gestures.

the talk - page 36

Color theory, the versatility of leather and an investigation of silhouette carry over from their Fall/ Winter debut and work to establish a new lexicon of sophistication that translates unique Italian ideals to a global audience. The wardrobe evokes the utilitarianism of workwear in contrast with the noble luxury of the finest raw materials and finishings. Bold colors - emerald, Caribbean blue, violet, burnt orange, and flame red - punctuate a neutral palette of biscuit, khaki-fatigue, parchment, and off-white. A lush botanical print originating from the Ferragamo foulard library is reimagined. A woven motif appears handwoven in leather, in open stitch knitwear and as a print throughout the collection. Linens and organzas juxtaposed with precious skins create a dialogue of substance and levity. Shoes and accessories naturally assume prominence as functional objects in the aesthetic spirit of the house’s formidable archive.

Many styles in the collection channel the late Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s minimalist iconic style. Less is more in many barely there strappy sandals and mules that bring a fresh elegance to the woman wearing them. Minimalistic, clean, sleek silhouettes clash with maximalist draped fringing, exotic skins, and glamorous 60s archive silk prints from Como; the collection is finished with bohemian touches and embroidery creating styles that you will eternally collect for your wardrobe. Seductive reds, cinnamon browns, and emerald greens are kindled in the collection of a powerfully contrasting and classic color palate. Born in 1962, Richard Saturnino Owens was raised in Porterville, California. Rick attended school in his hometown and eventually moved to Los Angeles after graduating high school to pursue his career in fashion. He attended the Otis College of Art and Design for two years before transferring to Trade-Technical College where he took courses to learn pattern-making and draping which led his career into the garment industry. In 1994 Owens launched his first clothing line where he sold his designs exclusively to Charles Gallay, an L.A. boutique that carried Martin Margiela, Thierry Mugler and Azzedine Alaïa, before moving to Paris in 2003 with his then-wife, Michele Lamy. Owens took an interest in a historic five-story building in Paris that was previously owned by French President François Mitterrand and turned it into his home. the talk - page 50

The designer’s runway shows were quite influential in Paris, and Rick ultimately opened his first boutique there in 2006. Inspired by the likes of Eileen Gray and Brancusi, the prominent designer debuted his first furniture collection in 2005, where raw plywood, marble, and moose antlers were a few of the elements that he incorporated into his interior designs. Rick Owens received many awards for his work, among them the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award for Fashion Design, and the Rule Breakers Award from Fashion Group International, both in 2007, and the Emerging Talent and Lifetime Achievement CFDA Award (the Council of Fashion Designers of America) in 2017, and more.

Statement Earrings Feathers and fringes, whoever said that these trends should only apply to clothes didn’t know what they were talking about. Statement earrings are in, like big time! Even more feathers and fringe‌ What says spring/summer more than a pair of bright orange earrings that goes perfectly well with your tanned skin? Runways are flooding with crystal drop earrings, beautiful flashy colors, and mixed media as well. Be careful not to mix too much color, go for a simple shirt and hairdo when opting to try these earrings. If you go for a colored print dress, steer away from bright colored earrings, and just opt for a big pair of bold colored matching your outfit. Mix & match and enjoy!

Theory runway hair by Greg Kessler

Straight Up Ok, so we’re taking a break from crazy hairstyles and going back to basics. But it’s not as easy as it sounds. Getting the perfect blow-dry is harder, getting the perfect slick-straight hair is even harder! But if you follow a few simple steps, you’ll achieve it so naturally, it’s going to be your go-to look. First, your hair should be at its healthiest state. Use a coconut oil or argan oil treatment at least once a week to get rid of excess frizz and to restore moisture. When beginning the process of styling your hair into a straight-do, start with completely dry hair, if your hair is naturally curly then blow dry it first. Do not use an oil-based thermal protector but do use one with less oil to minimize heat damage. Apply hair spray before you start straightening to make it last longer. Use a fine-tooth comb when using a straightener, comb your hair down while following with the straightener. Last tip, always straighten from the root to the end… the talk - page 70

Bushy Brows We are embracing natural beauty in all its rawness and glamour. The latest beauty trend out there - structured brows are out while bushy brows are in! The only issue is: how do we tame them? Well, we have the answers for you, of course. First, you have to find the shape that suits your face. Try to go 6 weeks without touching your brows with any wax or thread. After the six weeks are over, you can reshape them the way you want them to be, but DO NOT cut them too short, and do not try to have super clean lines when it comes to the brow shape. The aim is to make it seem like you didn’t do anything at all‌ When styling, fill in the sparse areas slightly with a brow pencil and then the last step, our favorite part, is applying a brow gel. Yes, this holy grail of a beauty product should be a staple in your makeup bag. The brow tint adds definition and keeps your brows in place to give you a flawless appearance all day. Last tip: brush your brows upwards with the brow gel applicator to give it an even bushier look!

Realizing her real passion and love for “art” and “beauty,” Sabika discovered that she desired to explore further and develop this passion. She decided to quit her job at one of the leading banks in Kuwait and pursue her future aspiration. Seby traveled back to London, where she had spent much of her childhood, enrolled in several professional courses at some of UK’s finest makeup schools, where she learned everything about makeup from skincare & face preparation to drag & SFX makeup. She was rewarded with 13 certificates, and the onward journey began. What inspired you to work in the beauty industry? Being raised in London when I was a young girl, I would be inspired by the simplicity and natural beauty of the west. I was fascinated by how these women looked so perfect, beautiful yet simple and I wanted to recreate such looks, first on myself, but also on women all across the Middle East. How would you describe your makeup style? Simple, timeless, effortless & classic. One of our personal favorite beauty product that we can’t live without is your beauty essence. Tell us about how you came upon the idea, the production process, and the public’s reaction. Aww, thank you! I call it ‘my magic spell in a bottle.’ Working as a freelance makeup artist on different skin tones/types while also traveling

to work with brides and for fashion weeks, I had wanted to pack one product that works for everyone, a product that can heal your skin and improve skin texture. That’s where I came up with the idea of my radiance glow lotion with my partner David Horne. It took us two years to get the right formula, and thankfully everyone simply loved it - everywhere! What differentiates a regular client from a bride, in terms of makeup styles? For brides, I keep it classic and never follow trends, whereas for a regular client I can play more with colors and styles. What is your go-to everyday makeup look? No makeup honestly! I just let my skin breathe, that’s the only face I have, and my skin will thank me for it later. What are 3 beauty products you cannot live without? My radiance glow lotion, Dior backstage lip balm, and my lash curler. What do you advise upcoming makeup artists in the region? My advice is to ‘BE YOURSELF’; never compare yourself to others and never be shy to reach out to other makeup artists to learn from their experience, because I believe a true makeup artist is one who never stops learning and sharing her/his experience and knowledge. Everyone is more than welcome to visit my beauty studio in Kuwait to learn about everything related to makeup.

BECCA Contour Beautifully BECCA knows glow. You have witnessed products turn the lights up to create a high beam finish, and now they have dimmed the lights down low to create soft, matte luminosity. This innovative formula manipulates light in 2 ways: blurring pigments visibly minimize imperfections and pores to even out skin’s texture so that light bounces off it more effortlessly, while microfine, luminescent pigments diffuse and scatter light to soften the look of skin. The result is photo filter effect in real life. Each shade contains a unique blend of pearl and pigment for 4 different finishes. Use the shades alone or swirl them together to customize your glow. Each palette includes one of eight aspirational mantras written on the mirror to guide you to find your inner light!

“Gentle Fluidity” is his answer to contemporary questions on gender identity. “Gentle” because benevolence is one of the core values of Maison Francis Kurkdjian. “Fluidity” because we are all free to express our personality without having to submit to diktats, just like the Maison has unlimited creative freedom. “Gentle Fluidity” is the name given to two new Eau de Parfums created in-house by a perfumer; a single name for two distinct olfactory identities; the same name shared by two creations, dual personalities, whose distinctive feature is to be composed of the same ingredients. To visually tell these two creations apart, a special role was given to the color of the name and the cap and to the balance of letters. Silver for an aromatic woody “Gentle fluidity” featuring a big G; and gold for the oriental musky interpretation where the F is in capital letters, like in “gentle Fluidity.” Fragrance composition remains a broad topic. When Francis Kurkdjian conjures up a new fragrance, he follows a golden rule: to use only the quantity of ingredients needed to convey an idea and arouse emotion.

Dr. Sura j V. Davis “Talking about Alopecia Areata” Dr. Sura j is a Specialist in Clinical & Cosmetic Dermatology at the Royale Hayat Hospital. Dr. Sura j treats disorders of skin, hair, and nails, while also specializing in Aesthetic Dermatology; this includes botox, fillers, and different types of lasers. A common auto-immune disorder, alopecia areata holds enough clout to cause immense psychological stress and discomfort amongst those suffering from it. We decided to shed some light on this particular subject, in conversation with Dr. Sura j, and address the issue head-on. Read through…

the talk - page 90

What is Alopecia Areata? Alopecia areata (AA) locally known as “talaba” is a common, inflammatory, non-scarring type of hair loss. There are many variations in the clinical presentation, ranging from small patches of hair loss to a complete absence of body and scalp hair. Patients affected by AA are seen in all age groups, sexes, and ethnicities, and may experience frustration with the unpredictable nature of their disease and significantly affect the quality of life. The cause of AA remains elusive though significant advancement has been made in the understanding of its causative pathophysiologic mechanisms, and it is believed to result at least in part from complex autoimmune-mediated hair follicle destruction. Patients with AA frequently experience marked impairment in psychological well-being, self-esteem, and may be more likely to suffer from psychiatric comorbidities. Are there many types of Alopecia Areata? Several subtypes of alopecia areata have distinct presentations. Some of them have multiple patches of hair loss, some only on the back of the scalp (oophiasic type), some sudden graying type, and some total loss of hair on the scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes – alopecia totalis (AT), and some of them progress to hair loss of entire body areas – alopecia universalis (AU). What are the outcomes after treatment? Factors that may contribute to improvement include AA subtype, the extent of hair loss, duration of hair loss, age at onset, and family history. Approximately 5% of cases of patchy AA will progress to AT or AU. Extensive involvement indicates an unfavorable prognosis. The oophiasis subtype can have a poorer outcome and may be less responsive to treatment, while the acute diffuse and total alopecia subtype generally has a favorable prognosis.

Are there any other diseases or factors causing or associated with AA? Increased risk of AA development is seen in patients with atopy, including atopic dermatitis, asthma, and allergic rhinitis has been reported. Multiple autoimmune diseases (including thyroid disease, psoriasis, and vitiligo) have been shown to have a high association with AA and also possibly with rheumatoid arthritis, celiac disease, and type 1 diabetes. There are recent studies although not currently substantiated in AA, the circulating chemical mediators, the inflammatory cytokines certainly have the potential to adversely affect other organs, as seen in other autoimmune diseases like psoriasis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and rheumatoid arthritis. Nutritional deficiencies including vitamin D and iron deficiency, are also more common in AA patients. Patients with AA have been found to have higher rates of sensorineural hearing loss. There is a strong genetic component in AA with a 10-fold increased risk in first-degree relatives. Stress and psychological disorders are among the most commonly cited causes of AA by patients, but the exact association is still debatable. A recent study reported a high prevalence of anxiety, depression and sleep problems among patients with AA. Furthermore, reports of suicide in children and adults with AA are concerning. Food with high dietary soy oil content seems to increase resistance to AA in laboratory studies. What are the treatment options in Alopecia Areata? Many therapies are available for the treatment of AA, including topical, systemic, and injectable modalities. However, these treatment methods produce variable clinical outcomes, and there are no currently available treatments that induce and sustain remission. Intralesional corticosteroids are considered a first-line treatment method for limited disease. Topical corticosteroids may be used alone or

Minoxidil 5% foam or solution may be used as adjuvant therapy in AA. Alone, minoxidil may be insufficient to promote complete hair regrowth. Topical immunotherapy is another option with good improvement in many. Short courses of oral corticosteroids are often sufficient to stimulate hair regrowth; however, the side effect profile precludes long-term use, and the likelihood of relapse is significant. Most recently, a novel therapeutic option using a group of medications called JAK inhibitors shows promising results raising the hopes of AA patients and the treating doctors more than ever before and is presently available in Kuwait. Also, many existing medications used for other indications are being evaluated for their utility in AA. Overall, the treatment options for alopecia areata are increasing, and there are new promising treatments on the horizon. the talk - page 91

Health Tip Vitamin IV Drip We’ve seen celebs posting about IV Vitamin Therapy on social media, and we’ve seen cute photos online. But what exactly is it, and what does it do? Because the idea of being hooked to an IV voluntarily doesn’t sound very pleasing… We agree that it does sound a bit intense. However, when you see the results, you’ll go running to the clinic. There are a variety of “vitamin drip cocktails” available to choose from; some are for immune-boosting, some for hair loss, improvement of general health, and to help with skin issues as well. The results are almost instantaneous, as the vitamins and nutrients are administered directly into your bloodstream bypassing the digestive system. Woah! None of the discomfort of swallowing loads of pills every morning. We do see why it is definitely something to try out, and we know we sure are booking our next appointment to give our skin a little boost and hydration before summer.

Maison Assouline Presents: Warhol’s Ultimate Book at INKED’s Art Week Pop-Up Dinner ‘Warhol Superstars’ In the spirit of Art Week Dubai, Maison Assouline celebrates ‘Andy Warhol: The Impossible Collection’ at INKED’s Warhol-themed pop-up dinners. The book will be displayed and available for sale throughout the dinner series, ‘Warhol’s Superstars.’

the talk - page 96

Exploring Warhol’s universe of pop culture, the ‘Warhol’s Superstars’ dinner series invites guests into the galactic mind of Warhol, offering a taste of what could have been a five-course menu curated by the artist himself. An evocative addition to Assouline’s Ultimate’s Collection, the book is a curation of the 100 quintessential, unique works that define the evolution of this illustrious artist, tracing Warhol’s dynamic career from the late forties to the end of the eighties and creating a stunning compendium, whose pieces, due to their rarity, value, and prestige as part of a museum or other collection, could simply never all be acquired by a single collector. Casual art lovers know Campbell’s Soup Cans and the Marilyn Diptych, but Andy Warhol: The Impossible Collection goes deeper, revealing and revisiting some less ubiquitous yet equally powerful pieces, spanning paintings, prints, sculpture, films, and photography, from Warhol’s astonishing oeuvre. The book was curated by Warhol expert and former Andy Warhol Museum Director, Eric Shiner. He is also the senior vice president of contemporary art

at Sotheby’s. Prior to this, he was the director of the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh from 2010 to 2016 and was the museum’s Milton Fine Curator of Art from 2008 to 2010. A leading scholar on Andy Warhol and Asian contemporary art, he lived and worked in Japan for a total of six years and was the assistant curator of the inaugural Yokohama Triennale in 2001. Shiner has curated dozens of contemporary art exhibitions in cities around the globe and was the team leader on the Warhol Museum’s major Warhol retrospective, which traveled to Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, and Tokyo between 2012 and 2014. Notable exhibitions include Andy Warhol | Ai Weiwei in 2015/16, Deborah Kass: Before and Happily Ever After in 2012, and Armory Focus: USA at the Armory Show in 2013. Also available at Maison Assouline in The Dubai Mall; Assouline’s Ultimate Collections curate a cultural signification through time from around the world and are collectible art pieces in their own right. Each book is hand-bound, lavishly produced with inspiring content from leading luxury brands, from the world of fashion and art.

H&M HOME Sunflowers Offer Fresh Take on Festive Collection & One-on-one with Concept Designer Johanna Malmgren

the talk - page 98

Sunflowers take center stage in this special occasion collection this year, influencing anything from colors to patterns to creating a bright and modern variety with a sunny and warm feel. Combining sunny yellow of sunflowers with warm greens, natural materials, and floral patterns brings the outdoors in and creates a happy spring vibe in any home. The kitchen, of course, is central to every celebration and items such as sunflower mugs, and leaf-shaped plates are key to this collection, along with linen seat cushions in neutral tones perfect for those long Easter meals. Rustic materials, like the jute of a round rug, and details such as insects and butterflies highlight the inspiration from nature while elements such as luxurious velvet, pretty embroideries, and colored glass add interest and elevate this beautiful collection. What were the inspirations for the new collection? Why sunflowers? We wanted to create a collection and a table setting that gives you that fresh spring feel, taking the sun and light as our source of inspiration. The result is a collection with lots of greenery and florals, combined with warm green tones and sunny yellow. Yellow is not only a typical festive color, but it’s also a color that makes you happy, and the sunflower is a perfect statement flower with its beautiful color and size. What are this year’s table setting trends? For the new collection, we aimed to capture a spring table setting in southern France with that light atmosphere and the feeling of being close to nature. Combining natural materials together with patterns and palettes influenced by florals and greenery brings nature right into your home and creates a lovely table setting for the festive holidays. What is your best advice on how to create a nice table setting for occasions? Don’t be afraid to use color! Set the foundation with a colorful table cloth. Use white dinner plates for a light feeling but work with colorful smaller decorative objects such as mini plates, vases or napkins. Finish it up by adding lots of greenery or florals together with golden cutlery or napkin rings. How do you make a personal festive table setting? For a personal touch, mix vintage with modern items. Your grandmother’s decorative gold rim plates will get a new life when combined with new stylish glassware or contemporary candle holders.

And just like that, winter has ended as quickly as it graced us. I’m pretty sure we all still have that one sweater we bought towards the end of winter and for some reason decided to “save it for a nice outing,” but that never came around and now you’re regretting it. Yup, I can relate… Fret not! I have just about the right type of “nice outing” for you to look forward to “next winter”. An exclusive, one-of-a-kind concept that only runs for - get this - four months of the year. Tawla By Jood (“Jood” is Arabic for Generosity) is a seasonal dining concept that began in the winter of 2016. Founded and fully operated by two moms, Suhair & Reem, this magical team of two engage you in a mesmerizing journey of top-quality deliciously cooked “home sweet home” vibes, with a side of ‘fantastic view’ and ‘cutlery.’ Yes, even their plates and napkins are a Mood. the talk - page 104

So, what is it exactly? Well, Tawla season starts every November. Depending on how grand the event is, sometimes it’s twice a month, and sometimes it’s just one big yummy fiesta a month. You want to know the best part? It’s always on a weekend making it hassle-free from work for everyone to attend this experience. Every Tawla of the month is set in a different location and supported by a totally different menu… Also, here’s the yummy kicker - it’s ALL homemade. And I mean, everything! The ingredients for the appetizers to mains to desserts are all hand-picked, some even home-grown. The moms go as far as making their own jams, flaming hot sauces, clotted creams, and lebnah. Every Tawla has its own dips ranging from pesto and harissa spreads to olive and lebnah pastes, and all these, on the side of crunchy baked bread strips.

Your typical Tawla buffet menu includes 5 salads, 6-7 mains (vegetarian & vegan options included), 6 desserts, a side table of tea, milk, and biscuits (also homemade), and of course, live music. It’s all you can eat so you might want to be there on time from start to finish. My biggest pro-tip to fully indulge in the Tawla By Jood experience is to sign up for their February table. It has become somewhat of a ritual the past 2 seasons - to hold this gracious Tawla in Sadeer Farms. A mini collaboration in celebration of Kuwait’s National & Liberation days: Tawla & Sadeer team up to give you a one-of-a-kind day full of activities, BBQ stations, a live band that takes in requests (yup, they cove patriotic Kuwaiti songs as well) and packages for families with children under 10, so they won’t have to exclude their

young ones from the long trip. Whether its breakfast, lunch or dinner, food has always brought people together. It’s a time for you to join with your family and loved ones after days of facing off with work and strangers. It’s a time to sit back, relax, and rekindle and even create happy new memories. Tawla By Jood was founded on those very virtues; Tawla’s number one aim is to give you a break from your busy routine and have time for your loved ones, and what better way to do that than over a delicious Tawla - just like home… To stay up-to-date with this yumminess, follow the concept on Instagram @tawlabyjood, and stay tuned for announcements on their 2019-2020 season registrations to come. the talk - page 105

The Ferrari F8 Tributo A celebration of excellence Ferrari has revealed the first official photographs of the F8 Tributo, the new midrear engined sports car that represents the highest expression of the company’s classic two-seater berlinetta. The name is an homage to both the model’s uncompromising layout and to the engine that powers it – with a massive 720 cv and a record specific power output of 185 cv/l, it is the most powerful V8 in Prancing Horse history for a non-special series car and sets the benchmark not just for turbos, but for engines across the board. The 3902 cc V8 won “Best Engine” in the International Engine of the Year awards three years running in 2016, 2017 and 2018 and, in addition, in 2018, was awarded the title of the best engine of the last two decades. As these prestigious awards demonstrate, in the automotive world, Ferrari’s V8 engine is seen as the very epitome of sportiness and driving pleasure. This is particularly the case when it is mid-rear-mounted in a two-seater. Ferrari has been honing the scope of abilities of this architecture, which creates an optimal weight balance, the talk - page 114

to perfection for over four decades. The result is the F8 Tributo, which is one of the fastest, most thrilling and communicative supercars ever. The new car replaces the 488 GTB, with improvements across the board, providing even better control on the limit along with greater on-board comfort. The F8 Tributo punches out 50 cv more than the car it replaces, is lighter and benefits from a 10% improvement in aerodynamic efficiency along with the latest version of the Side Slip Angle Control, now in 6.1 guise. So while the F8 Tributo offers the highest levels of performance of any car in the current range, that performance is also very usable. The F8 Tributo delivers its 720 cv without the slightest hint of turbo lag and produces an evocative soundtrack. Instantaneous power is matched by exceptional handling

thanks to advanced vehicle dynamics solutions. These include a new version of the Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer (FDE+) which can be activated in the manettino’s RACE position for the first time, a move designed to make performance on the limit easier to reach and control for an even greater number of drivers. The steering wheel rim is also smaller in diameter to enhance the level of tactility and make the car feel even more agile. In addition, weight reduction measures have cut the car’s dry weight by 40 kg compared to the 488 GTB, further enhancing both responsiveness and driving pleasure without impinging on interior comfort. State-of-the-art aerodynamic solutions incorporated into the car’s body help ensure that the extraordinarily powerful engine can be fully exploited. As with the 488 Pista, the F8 Tributo’s aero package is directly evolved from the track and it adopts several features from the 488 Pista designed to help manage engine heat, including, for instance, the rearward-angled front radiators and the dynamic engine air intakes positioned either side of the spoiler instead of on the rear flanks. Designed by the Ferrari Styling Centre, the F8 Tributo is essentially a bridge to a new design language that will continue to emphasise Ferrari’s key characteristics of high performance and extreme aerodynamic efficiency. The front of the car is characterised by the S-Duct, a solution that made its debut on the 488 Pista, but which has been redesigned to suit the extensive modifications made to this area of the car. The result is that the S-Duct alone contributes an impressive 15% to the overall increase in downforce compared to the 488 GTB. The new, more compact, horizontal LED headlights allowed Ferrari’s aerodynamicists to incorporate new brake cooling intakes in combination with those on the outside of the bumper, the aim being to improve air flow throughout the entire wheelarch and thereby avoid having to increase the size of the braking system to cope with the car’s greater speed. The new Lexan rear screen showcases the engine compartment and also brings a modern twist to the most distinctive design element from Ferrari’s most famous V8, the F40. The louvres help extract hot air from the engine compartment without impacting the efficiency of the blown spoiler which has been further evolved to increase downforce generated at the rear. The spoiler wraps around

the tail lights, visually lowering the car’s centre of gravity and allowing a return to the classic twin light cluster and body-coloured tail, another signature of the early 8-cylinder berlinettas like the very first in the legendary series, the 1975 308 GTB. The cabin retains the classic, driver-oriented cockpit look typical of Ferrari’s mid-rear-engined berlinettas, but every element of the dash, door panels and tunnel, has been completely redesigned. The new generation HMI (Human Machine Interface), complete with round air vents, new steering wheel and controls as well as a new 7” passenger touchscreen display, significantly enhance the on-board environment for driver and passenger. the talk - page 115
