Tell us a little about Luna & Beau’s concept and the successful year you have had. Salman Dashti: Luna & Beau is a pet lover’s dream destination. An original concept which combines all the needs of your furry companion plus a nourishing space for the owners to relax and socialize with other like-minded individuals. Our boutique offers the best in pet accessories and products from around the world. Our grooming salon has the finest stylists specializing in unique haircuts and extra special hygiene care, and our hotel offers your best friend the ultimate luxury home-away-from-home with 24/7 care. Noor Dashti: I believe what made Luna & Beau successful is the fantastic team that we have, we wouldn’t be where we are today without the effort and teamwork of all our excellent staff who work around the clock to ensure our company’s ethics and vision are reflected in our services and atmosphere. Salman and I try our best to make sure that everyone in our team feels comfortable and significant, which is what I personally think is the most crucial factor in any successful enterprise. In what way do you feel Luna & Beau has contributed to our society as the first of its concept? I think we created a space for pet lovers to gather and share their passion, which in turn contributed to the creation of a new pet-owner culture in Kuwait. One of the most beautiful comments I ever received was when someone told me that this is the only place in Kuwait where they feel comfortable being approached by strangers. There are many social barriers that we need to work on to overcome them. At Luna & Beau, pet owners can meet like-minded people in a safe, encouraging space, whether they visit with or without their pets. Animals always seem to effortlessly do a great job of breaking the ice. About the café, tell us more, we’re intrigued! The idea of having a pet-friendly cafe originated from the lack of such a space in Kuwait. It was frustrating that I couldn’t go anywhere with my pet post-grooming or have a comfortable space to relax while my pet was getting groomed. We also added a pet bakery where we bake fresh pet treats daily and even cater to custom-made birthday cakes for your pet! Our human menu is extensive, as well, with great coffee and other beverages and snacks. Noor: We love the idea of having a safe and fun environment for pets and their people to come and socialize while enjoying a great cup of coffee.

We make sure we listen to our customers with regular tastings and provide them with only the best coffee beans and food based on our customer’s feedback. It is also vital for us to support local concepts by sourcing our coffee beans and food locally, and we love to introduce new items every season from different local suppliers to support small businesses in Kuwait. You are continuously collaborating with people from different industries. What is your most recent one, and how did the public react to it? We love to work with local brands for collaborations. There is so much talent here in Kuwait, and it is always a pleasure to offer them a platform to exhibit their products. We are currently working on a collaboration with House of Luster for a capsule collection of acrylic pet beds and cat towers. We realized that many of our discerning customers want to customize their pet furniture, from color, size, material, or just to fit into their home decor. The feedback has been brilliant, and the orders just keep coming in! Events are almost biweekly at Luna & Beau, which was the most successful one in your opinion, and what drove you to continue hosting these events? Each one of our events is successful in their own way, with a clear motive behind each of our events. Giving back to the community is valuable for us, so we always make sure to work alongside local non-profits, whether it is to raise money or awareness, such as the charity bazaar for Second Chance Q8 and our dog yoga session (doga) to raise funds for Save a Soul Foundation. Does Luna & Beau also have a pet hotel service? If so, how would one register their pet to stay over while they’re on holiday? Yes, we do have a Pet Hotel, and like everything else, at L&B, our services are one of a kind! Our pet hotel is a boutique hotel with only 6 rooms for cats and 6 for dogs; this ensures that each pet receives the full attention of our pet carers. Our hotel rooms are equipped with pet cube cameras which allow the owner to log in through a mobile application and view their pet when they are away, the cameras also have a treat release option and microphone and speaker so you can talk to your pet and give them treats from across the world. The rooms for cats include a pet cube camera with a laser toy option, which you can also access from your mobile.

cover story - interview

Furthermore, we only accept small and medium-sized breeds, because these breeds require a different kind of care than their larger counterparts; providing companionship, mental, and social stimulation for our hotel guests and the care is more personal (one-on-one) with around the clock care for the pets and 24/7 concierge assistance for the owners. Guests can book the stay by calling us on 22089080 or dropping into our branch in Al-Rai. After celebrating your first anniversary, how do you feel about taking this step and introducing this much-needed concept to the community? We couldn’t be happier with the feedback we are getting from the community and also from people not in the pet community. We have been able to bridge the gap between the two and have succeeded in changing attitudes towards pets and their owners. One of my favorite things is being able to change the minds of children who wouldn’t touch a pet earlier and to eventually witness them asking to hold a dog for the very first time. I think we still have a long way to go to specialize our care, and many may term it as ‘too much pampering for animals,’ but it’s a positive thing. As long as the pet is happy and healthy, why not, right? It promotes the idea of a pet as a member of the family, and it’s better than, say, having a dog tied up outside or kept alone up on the roof, after all, dogs are sentient animals that deserve to be treated well. What should we be expecting from L&B in the future? We are always looking to improve and expand our range of products and services. We will be releasing more madeto-order pet furniture and our own range of pet grooming products. We also want to do more for the pet communities, so we are currently working on collaborating with local co-op boards to introduce pet parks to residential areas, which we think is much needed. Opening new branches is in the pipeline, across the region, and we have also been approached to open branches in Europe and the United States! It’s only the start of our journey, and we couldn’t be more thrilled. the talk - page 26

Giambattista Valli x H&M The season’s hottest collab delivers women an eclectic feast of glorious femininity Known as the dressmaker to some of the most glamorous people of the contemporary world, from globetrotting, jet-setting gals to artists and celebrities, the Valli Girls. Giambattista Valli created a feisty collection for H&M that reads like an eclectic recap of his style. He calls it an “abecedario” apropos, which in Italian means a dictionary. The collection: a selection of timeless pieces meant to be mixed and matched according to personal style, items designed to last and be cherished for a long time. It’s all about style more than fashion. Giambattista Valli, in fact, believes that one half of the work is done in the atelier, while the rest is up to the clients and their personalities. Each one different, each one unique. the talk - page 34

A designer with a wide range of aesthetic interests and an innate understanding of what women want, Giambattista Valli celebrates feminine beauty in many different ways. He is known first and foremost of his dresses: feasts of ruffles, glamorous layers of fabric blooming all around the body. But he is also a master of sharp, tailored silhouettes cut with exact precision, and of glamorous separates thought to make daily life fun, without sacrificing the ease. The Giambattista Valli x H&M collection encompasses all these elements, following Valli’s belief in a style that is timeless, ageless, effortless. Flowery allure Dresses take center stage, drawing a garden of fashionable pieces. Long gowns hug the bust and flow below the waist, movement highlighted by lace edging, beautiful prints, a widening of tiers on a tulle gown. A dramatic red dress opens up in giant ruffles at the shoulders like wings of an angel. Micro floral prints and a fluttering of ruffles give long-sleeved or sleeveless dresses a rococo dash of French politesse, which carries on in the demure short dresses. Legs for miles characterize the racier section of the collection, made of womanly short dresses that sculpt the body, bare the shoulders and swarm in delicate motifs. A flowery tutu with an asymmetric ruffle is as quintessentially Valli as a black, curvaceous bustier dress with flaps. Blouses and little cardigans ooze the same feminine spirit, conveyed through micro ruffles and flower embroideries. Sharp yet delicate Tailored items – a short blazer with peak lapels, a long coat – capture the sharp side of the collection. Edged in flower motifs, these slightly masculine pieces are seen in a very feminine way, marrying delicacy with strictness to significant effect. Voluminous outerwear brings a touch of bohemia to the discourse, while cargo pants and leather trousers have a tomboyish tone that is balanced by sexy miniskirts. L’allure de la rue In order to cater to the Valli girls of every generation, Giambattista Valli created a series of street-inflected pieces that nonetheless retain his unique sense of femininity and embellishment. A black hoodie swarms with flower motifs, while a print of lips runs all over the t-shirt. Decorative embroideries give preciousness to the simple sweatshirt. A logo on the chest is straightforward, in a fresh way. the talk - page 35

fashion - feature

Accessories The Giambattista Valli x H&M collection encompasses a wide range of jewelry and accessories to freely play with. The string of pearls is the key item: modeled on the style Giambattista himself wears; it features a mouth pendant that is molded on the designer’s own lips. Then there is GBV rings and earrings, sword earrings, VALLI GIRL earrings, Lolita sunglasses. High heel sandals and booties share the stage with flat slippers. Shoulder bags are small and demure, adding posture. Animal print scarves, socks, and decorative stockings complete the image. The elements to play with are feisty and varied. The interpretation is up to all the aspiring Valli Girls. the talk’s five minutes with Giambattista Valli the talk: Alongside the women’s collection with H&M, you’ve also launched your first men’s collection as part of the collab. We have two questions here: was it a daunting challenge and, why did it take so long for you to present for men? Giambattista Valli: Not at all. I truly treasure the span of offering and the variety of pieces from this collection: from street and daywear to evening and party looks, customers can enjoy the world of Giambattista Valli. Menswear has been on my mind, and I am very proud of having approached it for the first time with this collaboration, although I always design for characters, regardless of their gender. Freedom of expression is the ultimate luxury, not the value of the price tag! tt: How did you approach styling men? How different an ethos did you employ to when you’re dressing women? GBV: With the menswear, I approached it in reverse. Instead of having women borrow pieces from the men’s wardrobe, as it usually happens, I explored the idea of men taking pieces, patterns, and fabrics from the women’s wardrobe. The choice of baby pink as the basic color – the simplest tee in the collection is pink, not white – says it all. The collection is a selection of timeless items meant to be mixed and matched according to personal style. In this way, I do not distinguish pieces between womenswear or menswear; rather, I designed this collection for customers regardless of gender. When I create a piece, it is about the character who wears it, their personality and their own distinguished style and culture, and how my design could embrace these. the talk - page 36

So regardless of womenswear or menswear, it finally comes down to these core elements of an individual. tt: Who, for you, is ‘The Valli Boy’? Who, for you, is ‘The Valli Girl’? GBV: The Valli Girls and Valli Boys are very independent. They don’t follow any trends, and they’re very nomadic in their sense of style. They are very eclectic. The Valli People adapt to any situation in such a beautiful way because they are comfortable with themselves. the talk’s five minutes with H&M’s Creative Advisor, AnnSofie Johansson tt: What did you see in GBV’s other recent work that you saw would strike a chord with H&M’s customers? ASJ: We chose Giambattista Valli for this year’s H&M designer collaboration because he is the undisputed master of couture with an amazing ability to create strong silhouettes, and both H&M and Giambattista himself wanted to share that with our customers around the world. We were also drawn to how he speaks to the modern woman and man as much as the craftsmanship and beauty of his designs, which you’ll be able to see throughout the collection. tt: Did it take a leap of faith to have GBV launch his debut men’s collection as an H&M collab? ASJ: Not at all. Giambattista Valli really relished the challenge, and he had a great idea. Usually, women are borrowing pieces from the boyfriend’s wardrobe, but the Giambattista Valli x H&M menswear collection is the opposite: it’s inspired by womenswear and encourages customers to dress their personality. Animal and flower prints, as well as sequins and the signature Valli pearls, are seen on traditional menswear pieces such as blazers, fineknitted sweaters, and shirts, but also on modern classics such as the parka and hoodies. tt: This is H&M’s 19th designer collaboration, and, this time with GBV, H&M goes couture. What has your customer’s reaction been? ASJ: The reaction has been overwhelmingly positive. I believe they’re looking forward to the beautiful, wellcrafted pieces that are also effortless and timeless. And there’s a wonderful high-low mix of partywear and more

streetwear-inspired garments, which ultimately act as a wardrobe for different occasions and means there will be something for everyone! tt: Personal stand-out pieces from the current collaboration? ASJ: For the womenswear, the dresses are obviously important and the most recognizable item from Giambattista Valli’s oeuvre, but the outerwear is just as spectacular, and the jewelry is pretty special, too. For the menswear, the tailored blazers are key, as are the embellished jersey pieces and the fine knitwear. As for my personal favorites, it’s always hard to choose, but my heart does beat a little faster for the maxi-length black floral tulle dress with the jeweled neckline, ruffled details, and poet sleeves. Moncler Genius Moncler Richard Quinn Richard Quinn is the maximalist herald of bold colors and opulence. The shapes he favors recall the elegance of Fifties and Sixties couture. So do the bright patterns he splashes all over garments and accessories, which look joyous and deliberately kitsch. Quinn injected such personal preferences within the functionality of Moncler, delivering a visually striking, luxuriant mix of statement outerwear, printed bodysuits, and padded thigh-high boots.

the talk - page 40

The collection is thought in head to toe mix ‘n match, or rather in put-together. Prints swarm literally everywhere, but full outfits are created in a clash of different prints. Everything is pushed to the max. Bodysuits and slinky dresses are the base layer for a heavy rotation of duvet opera coats with bracelet sleeves and diamante clasps, puffy duvets with bold type spelling out loud Moncler like Eighties skiing gear, quilted pajama suits with bejeweled buttons and huge padded coats in animal patterns. Even bags and banana-heeled thigh-high boots get the duvet treatment, coming in a padded Moncler version to surreal effect. The result is ultra-feminine, very playful, unremittingly graphic: a mash-up of two different worlds joined into one.

The 15-piece collection was inspired by the lead heroines of the film, Maleficent and Aurora, played by Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning, respectively. Designs play on the female lead’s contrasting and complex personalities, whose relationship goes on to highlight the power of friendship in a powerful, feminist twist on the classic tale. The relationship between light and dark is a distinct and recurring theme throughout the collection and a point of early inspiration for von Halle. This empowering message, paired with Angelina’s vision, was the dream combination for the fashion brand’s first collaboration.

“Let the Shoulders do The Talking” With so many trends to keep up with, sometimes, we get so awed that we forget when and where the trend actually originated from to start with. Back in the 80s, the bold look of the power shoulder was born. Dressing for fall, we’re definitely counting on it to be a staple in our wardrobes again. There are different ways to style this trend, from pointy sharp, dangerous shoulders to softer options such as voluminous sleeves. Another option can be the one-shoulder dress or top, with one shoulder exposed while the other making noise. Asymmetrical pieces are a trend themselves. If you’re going for a girl boss look, then solid silhouettes that are slightly oversized are the perfect choice for you. Last but not least, ruffle it up! Ruffles used to be a trend, now they’re a staple in our closet! Ruffled over-the-top shoulders are in for you daring divas out there! the talk - page 56

DKNY Limited-Edition MTA Capsule DKNY celebrates its 30th anniversary with a capsule collection in collaboration with the MTA, honoring the brand’s New York roots. As Manhattan is the heart of New York, the subways are its “veins.” They’re an essential, iconic part of the city’s DNA—pulsing with energy beneath the city streets and inspiring the exclusive print used throughout the capsule. The MTA print is a monochromatic collage of street signage informed by famous subway stations and bike lanes. Iterations of the DKNY logo are hidden throughout the print alongside phrases such as “don’t knock New York” and “all DK all NY.” The print embodies life in the ever-changing metropolis—bold, bustling, and a bit bewildering. This 10-piece collection includes classic DKNY styles from shirt dresses and oversized anoraks to printed nylon joggers and hooded sweater dresses emblazoned with “no parking” signs. Reminiscent of the label’s early years, the edgy silhouettes exemplify DKNY’s signature city style. DKNY will join New Yorkers in their daily commute in the form of 50,000 plus DKNY branded MetroCards distributed across select subway stations. Among these stations are Herald Square, Union Square, Houston street, and both Halsey Street stations. DKNY MTA’s capsule will be available globally and on DKNY.com.

Chaumet celebrates the art of the twist After literature and nature, Maison Chaumet unveils a fresh facet of its jewelry culture with a new exhibition at 165 Boulevard Saint-Germain, held from 1 October to 2 November 2019. Through a series of photographs by Julia Hetta, the Autrement Exhibition explores the art of appropriating jewels by wearing them according to the whims of fashions and fantasy, with daring and creativity the talk - page 60

Whether forehead jewel or ferronnière, a necklace woven through the hair, or bracelets worn at the shoulder or ankle, from the Italian Renaissance to the fashion statements of today, jewelry lends itself to inventive adaptability. Freed from its primary function, it graces the body, clothes, or hair, becoming a precious accessory of a new kind. Cultivating its Parisian spirit since 1780, constantly reinventing itself through fashion and the arts, over the course of its history, Maison Chaumet has created jewels intended to be worn differently. Witness the Maison’s archival drawings and photographs in which the jewels astonish and perplex. Necklace or tiara? Bracelet or bodice ornament? Brooch or pendant? Revisiting this age-old practice with modernity, the Exhibition Autrement showcases an unprecedented dialogue between art and fashion, history and trends, the Maison’s heritage and its contemporary creations. Among the Chaumet archival elements and jewels of yesterday and today, the works of the great masters are digitalized, while photographs by Julia Hetta are presented inside 25 historical frames dating from the 15th to 19th century and loaned by Maison Lebrun. The Swedish photographer produced a series of images inspired by the Dutch masters and Renaissance art. High Jewelry necklaces become headbands, Jeux de Liens and Liens Séduction sautoirs are worn as shoulder strap or anklets, Espiègleries brooches appear as precious hairpins, a Liens Évidence wedding band hugs a lock of hair, Joséphine Aigrette bracelets are worn like palm jewels, a Bee My Love cocktail ring transforms into a scarf ring. The result offers an abundance of style suggestions to appropriate, a wealth of invitations to reinvent jewelry through how one wears it.

Boucheron Quatre

Over the years, Quatre has become one of the Maison’s icons; it is different yet classic, unique, but comes in many forms. Worn by both men and women, Quatre consists of four rings embodying the Boucheron architectural codes (Grosgrain, line of Diamonds, Double Godron, and Clou de Paris), allowing it to exist in different registers. This means Quatre can be pure and clean-cut or stacked with other pieces; it can be sober or spectacular, classic, or surprising. So, whatever the day, and whatever mood you are in, it can be a reflection of you.

evoked by a subtle droplet shape and its chiseled body rippling under its golden scales, this reptile has come to stand out as a mesmeric classic in the Maison’s repertoire, and a testament to the expert craftsmanship of the Boucheron jewelers. Although, over the years, its aura of mystery has always enveloped women of character, the motif has taken some liberties: it has snaked its way from pendant to bracelet, from ear-jewel to ring, from watch to headband, sometimes exchanging its diamond paving for colored stones, turquoise, white mother-of-pearl or lapis lazuli. And now, intense carnelian has been added to its bewitching palette. This very mineral, with its infinite variations of red and orange, seems to glow. It is like a beating heart, an invitation to a promise of vitality. Like Boucheron women, Serpent Bohème has panache but is still gentle, and it has never been so free.

Chanel’s Holiday 2019 Collection LES ORNEMENTS DE CHANEL For the Holiday 2019 Collection, Lucia Pica found inspiration in one of Gabrielle Chanel’s particular — and perhaps unexpected — penchants: her love of ornaments. After all, while Mademoiselle Chanel famously pioneered a “less is more” approach to elegance, she was equally fascinated by aesthetic opulence: by the deep lacquer of Chinese Coromandel screens, or the shimmering gold leaf that decorated her apartment. Now her paradoxical proclivities are reflected through LES ORNEMENTS DE CHANEL, which showcases festive grandeur for the modern age. Within Lucia Pica’s vision for the collection, a statement smoky eye or a glossy, lustrous lip appears set against a fresh, luminous complexion, and the contemporary contrast between indulgent splendor and refined minimalism is gleefully indulged. Collagen: Yes or No? Every girl has and should have this conversation with her gynecologist at one point in her 20s. Should I start taking collagen supplements or not? The answer is yes. In our midto-late 20s, the body’s production of collagen slows down. It decreases faster after 30 and then continues dropping 2% yearly. When taking collagen supplements, you are lowering the rate at which it decreases.

the talk - page 88

You might ask, “Why should I be taking collagen?” Well, for one, it provides the structure to your skin and bones, which means the health of your skin and bones depend on your body’s collagen production. Collagen also relieves joint pains which help with your recovery after workouts. Speaking of workouts, collagen can even increase your muscle mass which is what we’re all killing ourselves at the gym for. Another advantage is it also keeps your heart healthy. If these reasons aren’t making you run to the nearest supplier for some collagen supplements, then at least have some bone broth for dinner which is loaded with collagen.

“I’ll do it. I’m going to do this. I’m actually doing it. I’m going to open a Thrift Shop.” When I decided to undergo an ethical cleanse, I did so with the sole intention of taking everybody down with me… I mean, you really didn’t think I was going to walk this path alone, did you?

talk the talk - feature

After going through two major life cleansing processes, I realized that all it takes to make a difference is a mindset stubborn enough to make it work and a whole a lot of winging it. After my last article, I started to look deeply into mindful shopping, not necessarily ethical sourcing, but something as small as turning to vegan cotton and leather was amongst the things on my list to hunt. But all this opened my eyes to how limited the sources actually are. How un-inclusive and not-diverse the pieces are. An old idea started coming back to me, now more than ever, it felt like it was time to materialize it. I’ll do it, I’m going to do this. I’m actually doing it. I’m going to open a Thrift Shop. I had all my where’s what’s and how’s mapped out. I was lucky to already be in the company of some amazing women who had their own ethical brand that promotes sustainability and eco-conscious habits and products. We decided to join forces being that we share the same values, and our brands can live vicariously through each other… and just like that, we became the proud owners of a corner shop in a mall in Salmiya, our little co-joint hub promoting ethical products, textile waste reduction, and shopping for a cause. On October 9th, 2019, Odette’s Closette was born, along-side its space partner, AO. Although the idea isn’t that new to Kuwait’s scene (researched showed there have been a couple of shops that are resellers of used clothes) - Odette’s Closette is more on the modern side of fashion with a hint of funky retro pieces here and there. the talk - page 100

Odette’s Closette accepts donations, examines them, and sorts them in designated hangers; anything that doesn’t make the cut gets donated directly to charity. It’s also a non-profit shop, meaning the money coming in from selling these donations are put back into the community via cash donations to humanitarian groups focusing on issues like helping distressed families all over Kuwait and aiding the fund

for the education of the Stateless. For those of you who’ve never been introduced to the concept of thrifting, here’s a “101 breakdown” of what this movement entails: Thrift shops can be sorted into two main categories; vintage/antique shops and regular secondhand clothing shops. The first kind, owners usually buy the pieces you see on display because they are considered high-end, one-of-a-kind vintage,

and their market value remains high over the years because of the brand’s name attached to it. In case you’re wondering, Odette’s Closette falls under the second category. That’s not to say that Odette’s will not be stocking or accepting vintage pieces; anyone is welcome to donate and even negotiate with the owner on a price, and both sides leave happy. The sole purpose of Odette’s Closette is to raise awareness about our uncontrolled buying habits. Fast fashion is both fast in production as well as elimination, meaning that it’s tempting to be on top of all trends, but once the next trend is out (literally the next day), the latest item you bought is discarded and substituted for a newer, ontrend piece… and what Odette’s wants is to be is a place for all these discarded items to find new owners and not just be textile waste roaming and polluting our planet. Odette’s also aims to normalize wearing secondhand clothing items that are in mint condition; just because an item is discarded, doesn’t make it unwearable. Odette’s Closette is a non-profit to further our cause to encourage people to donate clothes instead of throwing them out and to get people more interested in the concept of giving back to the community - Odette’s proceeds are going to be donated to local charities and humanitarian aid groups in Kuwait. Now, let’s talk a little about AO… the beating heart behind Odette. AO was founded by Maryam, Nadia, and Tahani, three besties with a mission… what’s the mission you ask? Spreading the many ways one can

transition into a conscious lifestyle. Their products will provide you with small steps of guidance into an eco-friendlier, cruelty-free, and zero-waste living. AO also promotes mindfulness of health and kindness towards the environment, the latter being a shared value with Odette’s Closette. AO’s 3 main standards of decision-making are: 1) Wellbeing, 2) Accountability, and 3) Gratitude. The two sides of this little corner shop actively share a will to make a difference in this part of the world where we live. To see a difference, we took it upon ourselves to be the difference and spread mindfulness and accountability and consciousness to our peers. And that is the story of how a little dream, turned to a life-changing decision, made its way to the heart of Kuwait. Follow them on: @ao.kwt // @odettes_closette the talk - page 101

The fundraiser allows us to facilitate access to free or low-cost rehabilitative care such as speech therapy, physical therapy, occupational and behavioral therapy for children with special needs, especially those with limited financial resources.

“RunKuwait is a community-based event, we encourage the participation of people of all ages and abilities to show support for children with disabilities. The run or walk is available in two distances – 5km or 10km. The event is designed to be a fun day for all, including family-friendly activities. It is a great opportunity to share personal experiences, emotionally support families with children with disabilities, socialize with others, and have fun.” – Maraheb Al Qallaf We had the chance to interview two women that are part of this cause, to learn more about what they do and how RunKuwait helps the community. Tell us a little about yourself. Rouba Khair: I have experience in rehabilitating children with a wide range of growth and developmental disorders; including Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), developmental delay, sports injuries, burns, spinal conditions, traumatic brain and spine injuries, genetic disorders and congenital anomalies, torticollis and brachial plexus injuries, and cerebral palsy (CP). In my approach to treatment, I focus on developing individualized and holistic treatment programs based on assessments of each child’s physical abilities, motor skills, and overall development. I also work closely with families to help them make informed decisions about the child’s care, as well as counseling both parents and teachers on how to support a child’s development. I completed my Master of Science in Physical Therapy for growth and developmental disorders and its surgery in children in 2010 at Cairo University. Before that, I earned a Bachelor of Sciences in Physical Therapy in 2002 from O6U (October 6 University) in Egypt, and recently I got my certification as a licensed sensory integration therapist from Ulster University in the UK.

Maraheb Al-Qallaf: I am a speech-language pathologist. My specialty includes identifying and treating children with delayed speech and language, as well as feeding and swallowing disorders. I also work with children with an articulation disorder, cerebral palsy, auditory processing disorder, dyslexia, global developmental delay, and genetic disorders (e.g., down syndrome, fragile X, William’s syndrome…). I completed my bachelor’s degree in Communication Disorders with a double minor in American Sign Language and Psychology in Boston, Massachusetts-USA. Then, I completed my master’s degree specializing in Speech-Language Pathology at the New York Medical College in New York, USA. I am also certified by the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association (ASHA). Tell us about your work with RunKuwait. RK: I have been with CERC since the start and have seen firsthand how RunKuwait has helped increase awareness about children with different needs. Children with disabilities can achieve a lot and live a good quality of life, and RunKuwait is able to directly support this. This is precisely why, as a community, it is vital to support such initiatives to allow me as a clinician to deliver treatment to these children. MQ: RunKuwait is significant not only to our clinic but also to me as a speech therapist in Kuwait. Kuwait has a diverse population, and being able to raise awareness, treat children, and support families from disadvantaged backgrounds is extremely important to me as a clinician. Children can often have multiple difficulties that require ongoing support, making it challenging for families to afford. RunKuwait provides vital funds to allow the continued and comprehensive care of such families. Since its launch, do you already feel that this race has raised enough awareness, and in what way? RK: Definitely, many wait until November so they can join the race, now in its 9th year. It’s a family event; people can run and walk and even bring their children to participate. It is a great achievement for people to join and run for a cause. Events like these bring communities together. the talk - page 106

MQ: RunKuwait was launched in 2010, and since then, the participants’ numbers have been increasing annually. This not only shows Kuwait’s commitment to supporting families in need but also demonstrates the continued commitment of the population to support our cause. Globally there is a recognition that fair access to care for all is essential; it is fantastic to see that Kuwait is also involved in this global effort. In our region, charitable initiatives have existed for years, but don’t always get the spotlight. Why do you think that is the case? RK: I think the awareness of special needs in children and the services that support families have increased lately. Social media has a significant impact on sharing valuable knowledge about factual information, families’ stories, and their experiences with disorders like Autism, ADHD, Cerebral Palsy. MQ: This is correct, especially as donating to charity is part of Kuwait’s culture and tradition, and so is seen as part of ‘normal’ life. It is only recently that more established non-profit/charitable organizations have gained formal recognition for their work in the local region. Charitable organizations/non-profit organizations are gaining increased attention in supporting all populations in the region, instead of donations mainly targeted towards other developing countries, like the African/Asian projects. What do you hope to achieve after this year’s race? RK: We would like to be able to raise more funds so we can treat more children and support families. We would like to have the opportunity to raise awareness and promote early intervention projects, something the funds will allow CERC to do. MQ: It is hoped that participants in the run can link with our social media accounts, Instagram: @fshn_kw. Here they can gain more awareness through the various educational information we post. This, in turn, will help support parents and the public in suitable identification and treatment of children in need. the talk - page 107
