Number of enrolled learners for A.Y. 20-21 hits its target enrollment rate

PHINMA-University of Pangasinan (UPang) reached its target enrollment rate for first semester of the school year 2020-2021- - HIGHER than the all-out number of enrolled students last year. It was expecting a possible decrease and eyed for a lower enrollment rate this school year amid the coronavirus pandemic citing the effects of the prevailing health crisis, but numbers of enrolled students turned out to still be very extra.

There are more than 11,000 tertiary enrolled learners for both Dagupan and Urdaneta campus this first semester of S.Y 2020-2021 and over 9,000 learners were enrolled last S.Y 2019-2020. Ms. Liberty M. Soriano, Head of Registrar’s Office, said that before this pandemic, original enrollment targets were higher, but they adjusted to consider pandemic’s possible effects like projecting a lower number of enrollees this school year compared last year, as the pandemic lingers. She stated that with the collaboration and cooperation among departments, the number of learners is beyond their target enrollment rate for 2020-2021 was higher than they expected. Ms. Soriano uttered that the motivation

to continue despite the pandemic is high at the tertiary level. “Students have shown that their dreams and plans need not be on-hold. There may be some slowing down a bit but not giving-up or stopping."

Even it was higher than last year’s number, there were accounts of some students not enrolling this school year as

families continue to deal with the economic burnt of the coronavirus pandemic. Some cannot enroll due to some reasons - the inability of the parents to facilitate their learning area at home, internet connectivity problems, lack of gadgets, and not attending their online classes due to the health crisis and others.

A combination of printed modules provided by the school and online classes held at google classroom for discussion and follow-ups about lessons. Limited face-to-face classes are still on a test evaluation and discussion with the given guidelines

of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), due to the new variant of covid-19 it is possible that lecture-based courses will still conduct on online classes.

As the second semester is nearly approaching, Mrs. Soriano stresses out the modernization of transactions from physical to virtual. “The enrollment has been carried out significantly through online

means—students register online and pay online. On-site enrollment is recommended only when necessary to meet advisers.” The campus is still conducting a face-to-face enrollment process, mostly to the gymnasium, but students are encouraged to take their online registration for safe and less hassle transaction. Enrollment for the second semester S.Y 2020-2021 is still ongoing, and school administrations are expecting and hoping that they will have a consistent number of enrollees for this second semester.
