National Anthem

She’s been described as all style and no substance, somebody who is simply trading on unearned hipster cred, but that’s really not the case with Lana Del Rey. In the introduction to her new single, Lana insists “money is the anthem of success”, in a song that makes for compelling listening. Her unique voice adds something to the song,

conjuring up images of her swigging from a bottle as she’s whisked off to the Hamptons by her bad boy lover. Continuing the theme of her album, a sadness can be identified beneath the sweeping string section and gangster hip-hop beats, but it’s the vocals and excitement of the chorus that really make this song.

The line-up included Jay-Z, Lana Del Rey and Rihanna and was a real success for east London, finally shining a positive light on the underprivileged area that stole the headlines for all the wrong reasons last year when riots erupted in the capital.

100,000 Radio 1 listeners attended the two-day event in Hackney, enjoying performances by some of the world’s biggest stars. 11

Headliners Jay-Z and Rihanna performed to huge crowds in London’s east end where most of the 100,000 tickets over the two-day event were reserved for local residents.

We recently caught up with rising teen star Conor Maynard when he visited Birmingham earlier in the year to talk about how he got spotted by Ne-Yo and achieving great chart success. First of all, welcome to Birmingham. Thank you very much. So you first got spotted by YouTube; how did you get to be seen from the millions of videos already on the website? Well I suppose I am definitely part of the whole internet phenomenon kind of thing. I first started when I was around 15/16, I’m 19 now, so about three years ago. Yeah I was posting covers onto YouTube; I was just doing that because my friends knew I could sing at school and I was posting videos so my friends could watch the covers I was doing. When I first started it was kind of songs that I liked, they weren't exactly big at the time, they were more of my favourite songs. As I got more into it I started doing more current songs, then I did a cover of Usher’s OMG which went to 100,000 views, this was the first one that kind of took off and the next song was a cover of Ne-yo's Beautiful Monster which hit a million views - that was crazy! Then I realised that I already had a mini fan base there, waiting for me to do more covers. Then Ne-yo himself saw one of the videos and a few days later I was sitting on Skype with Ne-yo, talking to him about music and how he wanted to sign me. That created a massive buzz around school and even other schools were texting each other, nobody could believe it. You also won MTV’s Brand New for 2012 award, beating people like Lana Del Rey, I suppose that was a good feeling? Yeah that was absolutely amazing. For me to even be on that list was amazing. I always watched MTV when I was younger and imagined to be in it and for me to be in it was amazing. It was crazy, especially for me to win by something like 45% of the votes.

WE INTERVIEW:

CONOR MAYNARD!

As you’re performing here tonight, what is your favourite venue to perform in so far? I’ve got to say Brighton because it’s my hometown, it was madness and really fun. But I’m not gonna lie, I’ve heard things about Birmingham and I’m definitely looking forward to tonight’s show. So who inspires you, who got you into music? Well, ever since I was young, my parents used to listen to people like Michael Jackson & Stevie Wonder, as I grew up my influences stayed in the whole R&B genre, people like Usher, Mario, Ne-yo & Justin Timberlake, but I also listened to a lot of soft rock as well, people like Good Charlotte, Kings of Leon & Green Day as well. I had really weird influences which kind of ended up into what I do now, my mind always changed as I was growing up. At the moment one of the main people that I listen to today is Drake. So what’s your favourite song at the moment then? Oohh that’s difficult… I would probably say… Marvin’s Room by Drake, but then again that has been my favourite for a while now. I love this song called ‘I Thought’ by Brandy and I thought wow, that’s a good song. So for all the other people who are on YouTube at the moment, trying to get spotted, what advice would you give them? Well it’s definitely a great platform to get started on anyway, so well done already for doing that. What I noticed recently was that there are so many different people doing covers on YouTube, everybody knows that’s a great place to start. You really need to stand out if you’re going to do it. What made me stand out was to take a song and completely switch it up, I’d either change the lyrics, the melody, whatever it needed. If it was a big upbeat song I would strip it down to a piano version, whatever I needed to do to make it fit me. I'd change it so it looked like I wasn’t just doing another person’s song, I took the song and made it my own and then did my version of it. When you have that and you can make your own, that’s the best way to stand out - you have to be respected as your own artist, not just as a cover artist. Well thanks very much for talking to me today. Good luck with the rest of your tour and with your single ‘Can’t Say No’. Thanks, it was nice talking to you. 15

IT’S TIME TO SAY

GOODBYE

The final season of CSI: Miami airs this summer on Channel 5.

21

The Final Season of CSI: Miami We’re only going to experience David Caruso’s famous one-liners 19 more times before the popular show draws to an end in its last ever season. Nevertheless, the final episodes will begin on 21 July on Channel 5, when we’ll discover the fates of Horatio and Natalia after they were shot and drowned in the dramatic scenes at the end of last season. Make sure to tune in, it’s sure to be exciting! Yeeeeeeeaaaaahhhh!

New Girl is Back New Girl is finally returning on 10 July and promises to be full of the same shenanigans that made us fall in love with the show in the first place.

Person of Interest Channel 5 are bringing us another new show which is sure to win a big fan base. Although we’ve not heard an official air date yet, it’s believed to be around mid-August. Make sure to tune in…a second season has already been confirmed!

7/7: One Day In London It’s been seven years since that terrible day when 52 people were killed and more than 700 injured when terrorists attacked the public transport network of the capital. Now, with the world’s eyes once again on London, this documentary interviews more than 50 people directly affected by the London bombings, exploring the long-lasting effects as they reflect on their experiences and how their lives have changed. Retelling the story of what happened that day through the eyes of commuters, emergency service workers, Transport For London staff and families of victims, all of whom have enormous compassion for one another after hearing the stories of the day when strangers were thrown together in the blasts that shook London.

Apprentice Finalist Launches Whisk Nick Holzherr – runner-up in The Apprentice – has secured £170,000 funding to launch Whisk, after being turned down by Lord Sugar. Whisk is a service that enables users to convert a recipe into a shopping list, which could be used in online stores with just one click or printed out. Lord Sugar wasn’t convinced that the website would be ‘useful’, but since the show, Nick’s idea is quickly getting off the ground, gaining investment from four investors. The service would certainly be very useful, particularly with the rise in the amount of people shopping online.

REVIEWED: Gordon Behind Bars Let’s face it, we’d all like to see Gordon Ramsay behind bars, perhaps for his ignorant attitude or as punishment for some of his terrible TV shows, but sadly, that’s not what we got to see. Gordon’s had a troublesome few years financially and in the media, but what could have been his comeback show turned in to something of a lecture about how prisoners have it easy. Entering Brixton prison, Ramsay began to teach a group of inmates how to cook (starting with fairy cakes of all things!) so they could sell their wares and start ‘giving back’ to society. Quite frankly, I’m tired of celebrity chefs like Gordon Ramsay and Jamie Oliver (to name just two) appearing on television telling people what to eat, what to buy and how to cook. With society as troubled as it is today, there are much greater causes Ramsay could’ve put his time into, and if he had, maybe the TV show would’ve been worth watching. And one last point; how anybody can sit through an entire show with the egotistical Gordon Ramsay is beyond me. Perhaps it’s about time Ramsay changed his ways, and his attitude.

SPENCER MATTHEWS IS

THE BACHELOR

27

The Bachelor

The Bachelor – like many other reality-style shows – is one of those which you love to watch, even though you know you shouldn’t. This series, we see Made In Chelsea’s Spencer Matthews taking up the role of The Bachelor in its second series on Channel 5. Spencer goes on a quest to find the girl of his dreams, starting with a group of 24 and whittling them down to just 1 over the course of ten episodes. With some of the most beautiful women in the UK and ambitious career women in the mix, Spencer’s sure to have a tough time narrowing them down. So tune in to watch one of your guilty pleasures over the next couple of months as The Bachelor travels to some of the most glamorous locations in the world, all in the search for his dream girl.

Channel 5

is Spencer’s dream date Swan Mila Kunis, star of Black fits, as and Friends With Bene e of “she’s got a great sens humour and she’s so beautiful”.

MIC Return Still On The Cards Spencer Matthews has revealed he would love to return for a fourth series of MIC “if I’m allowed to proceed”. With Spencer taking up the role of The Bachelor, producers of MIC may not want him back. When Amy Childs appeared in Celebrity Big Brother, she had to depart from TOWIE as her new fame would interfere with the naturalistic format of the show, said producers of the show.

No Return For Hugo “I’m more of a Nand o’s person if I’m being truthful. It’s all about the compa ny rather than the OTT gestu res.”

l person “I’m a more natura n and rather than fake ta loads of slap.”

Hugo Taylor, star of hit TV show Made In Chelsea, has confirmed he will not be returning for series 4, feeling he has outgrown the show. Admitting the move is a big gamble, Hugo said “I could wind up having absolutely everything or I could end up with nothing. But I’ve become lazy and uncomfortable on the show.” Being passionate about film, Hugo hopes for a career in acting or directing and is worried that staying in Made In Chelsea would see him branded only as a ‘reality TV star’. “I plan to study at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute (New York), which teaches method acting. It’s expensive and you have to have some talent. I don’t think they’ve accepted anyone from reality TV before.” 29

StumbleUpon Launches in the UK StumbleUpon has now launched in the UK after millions of users in the US signed up to the service which looks at web browsing in a whole new way. Rather than searching for specific content, StumbleUpon enables its users to ‘stumble upon’ new content, taking users “down interesting but often unexpected paths, bringing the possibility of surprise to every Stumble”. After setting up an account and selecting your interests, StumbleUpon finds and recommends content that you might like, whilst also integrating some of the most popular ‘likes’ from users you follow. You can also share your favourite stumbles through various social networks. According to data from British users already using the US version of the site, males are most interested in photography, gadgets and technology, while females prefer books, magic and fashion. StumbleUpon really does make exploring the web more fun and exciting, helping you to discover things you probably wouldn’t have come across in an ordinary search, so head over there now and start Stumbling!

APPALLING CONDITIONS FOR APPLE STAFF 11-hour days, dirty dormitories, hazardous working conditions

Factory workers making Apple’s top-selling gadgets lead worse lives that those at the Foxconn facility which was the centre of a media storm a couple of years ago after numerous suicides. That was the conclusion drawn from an investigation by China Labour Watch, which investigated 10 Apple suppliers in Shenzhen, Shanghai and Jiangsu Province earlier this year. It said workers experienced ‘deplorable’ conditions including a

basic 11-hour day, excessive overtime, low wages, overcrowded and dirty dormitories and hazardous working conditions, whilst inadequate trade unions, excessive use of agency labour, poor food and routine cheating of overtime pay were identified as other problems. If Apple is to maintain its position as the world’s biggest company, it will certainly need to sort out the human rights problems which have blighted its production facilities in recent years.

WHAT’S THE HOLDUP? You may remember many months ago when the trailer for Grand Theft Auto V was released and we were all very excited. But now, that excitement is turning into unhappiness (at least in the hearts of the franchise’s core fan base).

Some fans, though, think that we could see the much anticipated second trailer this month, which would be a great strategic move by Rockstar who also create the Max Payne franchise. Releasing the second trailer to GTAV this month would probably boost sales of Max Payne, which haven’t been that impressive.

The makers of one of the most popular games ever created – Rockstar – said it would be revealing some more information a few months So, remain patient GTA fans; there after that original trailer, but, seven may not be too long to wait now! months later, it’s still nowhere to be (KEEP UP TO DATE ON TWITTER: @TSMONLINE) seen.

LONDON GRAND PRIX? DON’T HOLD YOUR BREATH!

(next page)

35

Over the last week or so rumours have been whizzing around about a Grand Prix being staged in London, but will it really happen? There’s no doubt about it, holding a Grand Prix in the world-famous city, incorporating sites like Buckingham Palace and the Houses of Parliament, would certainly be one of the most spectacular sporting events in the world. The news has certainly excited the McLaren team and one of its key sponsors, who staged an event in London with Hamilton and Button talking about how fantastic the race would be if it went ahead.

Ecclestone has suggested he would put up the money, that’s unlikely to happen, as we’ve seen with the venue in Texas. Thirdly, the infrastructure which would need to be improved in order to make the event possible would cost even more money, not to mention the noise and air pollution concerns. There’s also the fact that key London streets would need to be closed for at least three days over the race weekend, adding even more to the cost.

But there are so many things that could (and probably will) get in the way of the race ever being held in the capital.

Although, having said that, holding a Grand Prix in London would generate more publicity and definitely bring in more tourists to the city. That would probably mean the event would generate more cash than it would cost to put it on. Not only that, but Boris Johnson would also support it, providing necessary criteria could be met.

Firstly, the British Grand Prix has been held at Silverstone for countless years and has a contract until 2027. Secondly, the cost of the event would be staggering. Although

So, even with all of the hype surrounding the potential London Grand Prix, it looks unlikely to happen, but when Ecclestone is involved, never say never.

Let’s Breakaway from World Snooker Ronnie O’Sullivan has proposed the biggest names in his sport break away from World Snooker and set up Champions League-style events. The current world champion and one of the sport’s biggest names recently quit the main snooker tour after refusing to agree to a strict player contract put forward by Barry Hearn, who has turned the sport around in recent years. But in his bid to make the sport more popular, Hearn has created events all around the world, meaning players spend much of their time travelling to and from events – something O’Sullivan isn’t happy with as it makes it impossible to balance work with family life. So, O’Sullivan is planning breakaway tournaments with the most popular players, rather than the top-ranked ones. “Other players like John Higgins and Mark Williams may feel the same as me soon,” he said in a recent interview. “Get them with, maybe, Stephen Hendry, Ding Junhui, Neil Robertson and Judd Trump and you have a show. These are the players people want to see. The rest, like Ali Carter, are making up the numbers.” Insisting he’s not going into competition with World Snooker, the tournaments O’Sullivan seems to have in mind would certainly be worth watching and would be welcomed by the sport’s fans. 37

A good point raised?

likelihood of reoffending. Obviously people will always argue that Now, you may have read the rather prisoners shouldn’t be given critical review of Gordon Behind Bars opportunities like that because they over in the TV section of The Student have committed crimes, but surely it’s better for them to contribute to Magazine, and although the show society by paying taxes, rather than wasn’t greatly received, maybe going back to prison or becoming Ramsay did raise a good point, at reliant on benefits, both of which are least in the show’s concept. already a big drain on the state. The reoffending rates in the UK have been on the rise lately, and maybe that’s because prisoners don’t have anything to do after they have served their sentence. Their chances of getting a job are almost none existent, so should the government look at changing that? We see in the media time and time again how prisoners have it easy with Xbox’s and pool tables and having to do barely any work, with free food, a clean bed and no bills to pay. Understandably, that annoys a lot of people who work hard to provide for their families. But, with a proper rehabilitation system in place, maybe prisoners wouldn’t reoffend upon release.

So, although Ramsay’s show may have missed the point and focussed on drama rather than a cause for the purposes of entertainment, it may actually inspire some people to encourage the government to change things, hopefully for the better.
