FASHION

Mortified, would be the reaction I would have if J.W. Anderson gave me the tan monstrosity he gave to one of his male models to display his collection for London's male fashion week. Designers aren't always sacred when it comes to their designs; a certain Marc Jacobs springs to mind in the neither feminine or m a s c u l i n e l a c e replacement for a tux, simply to be worn on the grounds of refused monotony. I respect Jacobs because the red carpet is not a catwalk, he wasn't meant to be marking his territory as top dog, spraying the crowd with his flare and barking with model after model to get those all important sales. Simply, he was craving what every dazzling star craves on the red carpet of all places...attention. It certainly doesn't make up for the ludicrous faux pas, but it certainly makes it up in the paparazzi stakes. J.W. Anderson, on the other hand, farted on his audience and potential buyers with his menswear collection; lacking the sexual twist employed by Coco Chanel with the infamous Chanel Suit, maintaining the clean cuts and flattering tailoring that gives a hint of androgyny to the female frame, whilst holding onto our prized femininity. Yves Saint Laurent later contributed with the female tuxedo and Le Smoking trouser suit in the 60s and both trends are still advocated by the stars,

although Diane Keaton's Charlie Chaplin Oscar's meltdown juxtaposes the dramatic, risky brilliance of Rihanna's 2009 tuxedo, showing the world an edgier style. J.W. Anderson, however is not edgy, if anything he displayed the workings of tailored nightmare in the holy Mecca of design. I make no claim to be an expert with fashion, my guidelines come from Vogue and Brighton's street style, but even I can see that this collection is in no way stylish. by Alexandra Pollard In fact it pains me to think of the thousands of talented designers who deserve a place on that runway, whose clothes do not exhibit a 'that'll do' approach. The collection is cool because it doesn't care, but isn't that its hindrance? Alexander McQueen made hundreds of haute couture designs, one collection being called Highland Rape, displaying how unafraid Lee McQueen was. Shows were emotionally charged, dramatic with each design representing a juxtaposition, yet madness never drowned the clothes, they spoke for themselves and all I feel when I look at a man in a dress is, 'Oh my God that man is in a dress.' I don't see McQueen expert Italian m a n u f a c tu r i n g , B r i ti s h tailoring, detailing and brilliance, I don't see how each item shouts 'I will have

your attention', I don't see painstaking embellishment in an Anderson male, wearing a frilled little black dress and boots, all I see is laziness. In Gaga's 'Bad Romance' video, I remember the green McQueen ensemble she wore with dangerously mutated ballerina 'Alien' heels and seeing the hand stitching in every seam, the attention to detail that shocks and satisfies, the detail that doesn't shock and disappoint. Even after McQueen's tragic death, Sarah Burton's bee inspired 2013 collection maintains the mysterious elegance and ethereal nature, that is almost like a tangible, yet unattainable essence that is Alexander McQueen. Every designer mentioned

ARTICLE: ALEXANDRA POLLARD has something in common with Anderson, a bravado that is unafraid to say 'I will make a suit for women' or 'to hell with this corset'; Anderson is particularly brave for openly being anti-dress- well for women. I admire him for wanting to shake up the industry by r em o vi n g es s e nti a l i s t epistemology and gendered clothing, a-gendered would most likely be a hell of a lot easier, but then aren't we losing our identities in this haze of 'originality'? Or is Anderson refusing to conform to societies gendered formations, and we lack is the gentlest of pushes to join him? I will admit to seeing some pure brilliance in both the male and female collections:

seeing myself with the frilled white bag, accessorised with the blue and pink stony bracelets, matching my navy jumper with cut outs next to each breast with some skinnys; I could even see my boyfriend in the black jumper with the white picket fence on it from the menswear collection; I can even see his horrified face on seeing the frilly shorts and the bustier with pockets for some added masculinity. In fact, I felt mystified by the overall simplicity amongst all the chaos of his little grey dress. However the thread of simplicity and no matter the superb few pieces, it won't change that the dress is too far. Perhaps I'm just too closed

minded for men to be risky with their fashion sense; after all, the designers I would prey to if they became gods are wacky and 'out there.' Marchesa is one of my favourites with its fairy kingdom designs that hold the essence of woman meets fairytale in their lacy, feathery and sheer designs; but, even the gold dress with the ruching made into a rose couldn't save the shipwreck that was Florence Welch's three tiered' toilet roll warmer' dress. Observers watching McQueen's Highland Rape collection must have at some point thought the bruised make-up with the tartan distasteful, just as men watching a boxed top with a frilled neck and frilled shorts abysmal. Maybe we aren't ready for J.W. Anderson and the shakeup he is reverberating throughout the fashion world? Maybe men aren't willing to give up warm knees? Whatever the case Anderson is risky, but nonetheless clever because he knows he has our attention and, most importantly our anticipation; yes, he may not get many men buying his dresses, but he achieved a fan base with his Topshop collection and has now either gained a 15 minute shock status or infamy. Could he lead British design across the pond like Christopher Bailey at the helm of Burberry, Stella McCartney and Alexander McQueen or could he disappear altogether like a X-factor reject?

A completely new social network? The inspiration for Outfit Hive was really two-fold … One, we wanted to be able to see what real people like us are wearing (magazines and celebs are great but we’re talking about every day, affordable and achievable style inspiration). And two, there are so many great features out there – both social network and fashion related features – but they’re scattered. We like parts of so many websites; one site to combine them all seemed to be needed. So Outfit Hive is the bring-

ing together of many great features with some original ones too. One of the most unique benefits of this site will be finding outfit inspiration tailored to you. You’ll be able to see what others the same size, height and style as you are wearing. You can see not only individual items but what people have teamed them with to form a complete outfit. It’s also a great way to connect with friends. A main feature of the site is Outfit of the Day. This is a competition that runs for each daily topic and works

simply like this: members vote on their favourite photo that day and the one with the most votes is awarded Outfit of the Day. It’s a fun feature that helps members feel good and interact more.

Ready or Not Bridgit Mendler

The Start Of Something Great... Now to most readers, you might not have heard of Bridgit Mendler as much as we would have liked you to, however you will probably of seen her in the smash hit, Go od Lu c k C harl ie! O ne of Dis n ey Channels Main TV Sitcoms

How Did This Happen? Bridgit has been writing songs since age 6, and in recent years has made songwriting a daily habit, And All that discipline paid off because, with her debut Hollywood Records album Hello My Name Is… Completed and a premiere single stuck in the UK’s Top 10 Charts, Bridgit Mendler is about to rock the world with her vocal talent. And wouldn’t you know it, her debut single is called "Ready or Not." Produced by Emanuel “Eman” Kiriakou and Evan “Kidd” Bogart, and co-written by Bridgit, the single tells a tale of discovering someone special on one special night, but it also sums up Bridgit’s approach to life. “I wanted to write something that was empowering for girls,” She says of the track. “I consider myself to have been that girl sitting on the curb waiting for the world to notice.”

Hello My Name Is… Like It says, you might not have heard of Bridgit Mendler as a song writer, until now. Her debut single ’Ready Or Not’ has already stormed the UK and Us charts, lets see if the album does the same, we have no doubt! The album contains more soon to be smash hits like ‘Hurricane’ Out now on iTunes! “I once was told that listening to a good song is like coming home to a place you’ve never been” Bridgit says. “Music has the ability to impact people in such a strong way. Its such an important job, and for me it’s the most gratifying thing”

Black & Blue - The New Single Out 11th March You will all of heard of Paloma Faith by now, her smash hit songs have taken the UK by storm, not to mention her amazing fashion sense. Now she has a brand new single out in the UK which we got a sneak peak at listening to. As you may know, she has already been nominated for two Brit awards and this is the fourth track to be taken from her Double Platinum Selling album ‘Fall To Grace’. After listening to the song via headphones, then playing it aloud in the office on repeat for the following two hours, I have to say that it is one of the most influential songs we have heard in a while. And what I mean by that is the ability to tell a story, then uplift you instantly with her amazing voice is something that I find incredible for anybody to be able to do.

The Album… Paloma wrote and recorded ‘Fall To Grace’ in London in 2011/2012. The album is produced by legendary producer Nellee Hooper (Bjork, No Doubt, Massive Attack, Madonna). ‘Fall To Grace’ is the follow up Paloma’s debut album ‘Do You Want The Truth Or Something Beautiful?’ which was released in 2009. The album sold over half a million copies and spawned the hit singles “Stone Cold Sober”, “New York”, “Do You Want the Truth Or Something Beautiful?” and “Upside Down”. Paloma said: “The new album has taken on a very cinematic mood. ‘Picking Up The Pieces’ is no exception. It deals with the issues of being in a relationship with someone who is still recovering from a previous relationship with another person. It is a song about self doubt and insecurity.”

New Studio Album From Jamie Cullum Jamie Cullum is pleased to announce the full details of his sixth studio album, ‘Momentum’, released on 20th May 2013 via his new record label Island Records. Having sold over ten million records worldwide, performing to sold out tours across the globe, working on a variety of unique projects that have seen him collaborate with a range of artists

from Stevie Wonder, Pharrell, Sander Kleinenberg, Rizzle Kicks to The Roots, Jamie continues to enjoy an incredible creative roll. The album, titled ‘Momentum’ for good reason, is bursting with ideas and inspirations which almost have a life of their own. Indeed, Jamie approached this record in a completely different way to his previous LPs, for the first time using DIY home demos as a blueprint for the majority of its tracks… and for a while, using everything from iPhone apps,

charity shop keyboards and cassette recorders as his ‘go-to’ instruments during the process. Alongside the new album, Jamie also announces his return to the London stage with his first headline show in four years at Heaven on Wed 3rd April 2013. In a world where everything seems to be fast-paced and computer-based, it’s lovely to have (or give) something which is superbly individual and personal. That’s exactly what’s offered with Natalie Daniels’ stationary set, designed by corporate branding specialists at Bureau Rabensteiner. Each card is coated in a layer of black, thermo-sensitive ink, making them look like little Polaroids. It’s that ink which carries the experience, so when you touch them, a white image develops when contact is made. Press on the card and leave your fingerprint, kiss the card and see lips; the cards respond to every interaction, giving them a magical edge and a quality you just can’t achieve with computer-induced affects.

Samsung Announce The S4 Main Features: The Samsung Galaxy S4 has been, in my eyes, set entirely out to destroy the iPhone 5. It has a extreme range of features that cannot even compare to any other phone at the moment, these are things like controlling your phone with your eyes, a super amoled display, a 5 inch large screen. Like iPhone, you can use a Siri based software to control your phone whilst driving when you can’t look at it!. To follow from all this, there is also software installed that can monitor your surroundings to see if the area you are in is optimal for keeping healthy. This is going to be big!

SPORT MCLAREN UNVEILS MP4-28

Vodafone McLaren Mercedes launched its 2013 Formula 1 challenger and kicked off a year of 50th anniversary celebrations with a spectacular parade of classic racing cars at the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking on January 31. The display of race cars, which spanned the decades and featured Ayrton Senna’s dominant MP4/4 from 1988, culminated with the arrival of the team’s 2013 drivers, Jenson Button and Sergio Perez. The duo unveiled McLaren’s MP4-28, which McLaren describes as being not “merely a refinement of last year’s seven-race winning car, it’s a deep and sweeping re-design of an already successful chassis in several key areas. 2013 marks Jenson Button’s fourth year with McLaren, making him the team’s most experienced driver. Replacing Lewis Hamilton is Sergio ‘Checo’ Perez, who is embarking on only his third year in Formula 1. With years of expertise in the sport, a talented supporting team and two drivers who bring both experience and youth, 2013 promises to be a spectacular year for McLaren. KEEP READING FOR MORE PICS!

EUROPEAN SLUMP ARTICLE: JOE ATHERTON

This year’s Champions league competition has seen all the English clubs getting knocked out before they even reach the quarter final which is the first time since 1996. Does this mean the standards of the Premier league are falling? Or is this just a one off? Chelsea and Manchester City didn’t even reach the knockout stages and Chelsea are the first team to win the Champions league and then not even reach the knockout stages the year later. Manches ter United were knocked out by Real Madrid after playing some brilliant football but then once they went down to ten men they just couldn’t handle the quality of Madrid’s team. Finally, there’s Arsenal who lost 3-1 at home and it was evident that Bayern Munich were just a different class. However, Arsenal put on an excellent defensive display at the Allianz arena winning 2-0 and only missing out by just the one goal. So, even though they lost they d id pu t on a s pirited performance meaning they were left bemoaning of what could have been. Over the years there has been a drop in the number of English clubs reaching the quarter final. However, you only have to go back to last year to find out the last English team to win the Champions league, so surely it can’t be that bad. Although it is clear to see that the standards of other European leagues are increasing. Juventus are getting back into form reaching the

Champions league quarter final for the first time in seven years. Then there’s Dortmund who look like they could be the dark horses of the competition topping their group above Real Madrid, you wouldn’t want to bet against them. So, with no English teams through to the quarter final the fol l owing team s rem ain, Dor tm u nd , Real M ad rid , Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Malaga, Juventus, PSG and Galatasaray. It looks like it will be a thrilling end to the Champions league with some fantastic clubs taking part. Barcelona are currently the favourites to win the competition but they have got a massive job on their hands if they want to lift the trophy. There could also be the big Spanish derby between Madrid and Barca in the latter rounds of the competition depending what the draw is and whether they get through or not which would be a fantastic match to watch. At the moment we have no choice but to wait and predict what could happen. I’m sure fans will not be disappointed though, surely not with all the incredible clubs in the last eight of the competition. It’s definitely going to be one to put in your diary but for English fans the only disappointment is that there are no English teams in the quarter final but as Patrick Vieira has said it is only a one off. So, I’m sure English fans will not be worrying too much.

Fish & chips are a British tradition, and they don’t get any better than when you’ve made them. So here’s a step-by-step guide to a delicious meal that’ll be ready in a flash.

What will I need? 125g self raising flour (plus extra for dusting) ½ teaspoon baking powder ¼ teaspoon ground turmeric 200ml cold water 1.5kg large floury potatoes (Maris Piper would be ideal) 4 cod fillets, skinned and pin-boned Sunflower oil, for frying Salt and pepper

Let’s get started! Mix together the flour, baking powder, turmeric and a pinch of salt in a bowl, making a well in the centre. Pour 100ml water in and gradually whisk to make a smooth batter, then whisk in the remaining water. Put to one side. Cut your potatoes to make chunky chips, placing into a bowl of cold water as you do so. Pour the oil into a deep fat fryer and heat to 180-190 C, or until a teaspoon full of batter turns golden brown in 30 seconds. Fry half the chips until golden, drain and keep warm while frying the remainder. Keep warm while you fry the fish. Pat the fish fillets dry on kitchen paper and dip in the batter. Carefully lower them into the hot oil. Gently fry for 4-5 mins until crisp and golden. Drain a keep warm while you fry the remaining pieces. Serve the fish and chips with a slice of lemon and sides of your choice. *Notes* Serves 4.
