JAMEELA JAMIL TO HOST RADIO 1 CHART SHOW Jameela Jamil is to become the first ever solo woman to present the chart show, as Reggie Yates steps down at the end of the year. Vernon Kay is another of the station’s much-loved presenters who has also taken the decision not to extend his contract. He said: “I’ve had an incredible nine-and-a-half years at Radio 1 that has exceeded all of my expectations. It has been a fabulous experience and I’ve loved the weekends I have spent with my listeners.” He will leave the network at the end of the year after 12 years saying “weekends are more precious than ever” with his daughters now being in school. Yates told listeners: “It’s been a privilege to deliver to the nation the weekly No.1 song, but after 10 years at Radio1 I am looking forward to focusing on other projects and new challenges.” Jamil said: “I am absolutely delighted and honoured. I’m fully aware that I have big shoes to fill and am so excited to get started. I’ve grown up listening to the official chart so I cannot thank Radio 1 enough for the amazing opportunity.” There have been some major changes at Radio1 in 2012, with Chris Moyles being replaced by Nick Grimshaw earlier in the year, but things must change and Jameela will undoubtedly bring a new edge to the Chart Show from the New Year!

OUR PICKS FOR NOVEMBER

PITCH PERFECT LENGTH GENERE STARRING 112 MINS | MUSICAL COMEDY | BRITTANY SNOW, ANNA CAMP, ELIZABETH BANKS Get ready to tap your feet as the excellent young female cast of Pitch Perfect sing their way to triumph. Just starting out at university, Beca isn’t exactly keen on getting involved in the usual social activities, but after being heard singing in the shower, she’s quickly recruited to join the all-girl Acapella group. The only thing the girls have in common is their voice as they blend in perfect harmony, but Beca quickly spots a much bigger problem – the group’s music is deeply conservative. Faced with this problem, the girls must take some bold risks to expand their repertoire if they’re to stand any chance of claiming victory in the upcoming contest.

ALEX CROSS LENGTH GENRE STARRING 101 MINS | ACTION THRILLER | MATTHEW FOX, RACHEL NICHOLS, TYLER PERRY Alex Cross will have you biting your nails throughout as the intuitive homicide detective plays a very dangerous game with a serial killer. His unique skills get him spotted by the FBI who want Cross to become a criminal profiler in Washington DC, but with a serial killer on a rampage, his pregnant wife has her mind very much set against the idea. Nicknamed Picasso, the killer leaves a drawing at each of his crime scenes, leading Cross and his partner Tommy to deduce he’s a professional killer. But before they know it, the chase becomes horribly personal.

THE MASTER LENGTH GENRE STARRING 144 MINS | DRAMA | JOAQUIN PHOENIX, AMY ADAMS, JESSE PLEMONS Following World War II, ex-military drifters are looking for ways to re-integrate with the society they’ve spent years away from. Among them is Freddie Quell, a Navy veteran struggling with a drink problem, who stumbles aboard a ship bound for New York, where he meets the charismatic intellectual, Lancaster Dodd – the leader of religious cult, The Cause. Providing Freddie with the guidance he’s been seeking, the pair form an immediate teacher/student bond. All appears to be going well until Freddie is informed Dodd is simply making up his teaching as he goes along, provoking a major crisis.

SIGHTSEERS LENGTH GENRE STARRING 88 MINS | COMEDY | ALICE LOWE, STEVE ORAM As the winter months begin to set in, what could be better than a British comedy-horror, tinged with a hint of romance? That’s exactly what you get with Sightseers as Tina is eager to escape the clutches of her controlling mother, seeing a romantic caravanning holiday with boyfriend Chris as the perfect opportunity. Visiting museums and local landmarks, it’s not too long before the other side of Chris emerges, running over a litterbug and leaving him for dead! Liberated by the experience, the couple begin a killing spree across the British countryside in this black comedy.

YOUNG APPRENTICE

makes them think if they can get on TV, they’ll be famous, they’ll be a success. It’s not right. We need to move away from that celebrity culture that everybody seems to be obsessed with and stop encouraging people to humiliate themselves just to achieve fame. Fame doesn’t equal success.

The series of ritual humiliation, which the BBC likes to call Young Apprentice, is once again back on our screens something which I’m sure failed to escape your attention. With it comes another line-up of Britain’s future entrepreneurs brimming with ambition and experience.

That’s what disappoints me most about Young Apprentice, it doesn’t focus on the candidates’ best attributes, nor does it bring out the best in them. Actually it tries to turn them into the next Lord Sugar and that’s something we can certainly do without. The young people this series really do have potential, just like every young person in this country does. We shouldn’t make a mockery of ‘posh’ people like so many viewers were doing on Twitter during the first episode. We should support them, not isolate them. Max, by the way, or the ‘posh kid’ as many viewers will know him, probably had the most potential of anybody there. THEY’RE BACK... be one of the most successful out of this year’s line-up. But that doesn’t mean you’ll hear about him and his achievements, because remember, fame doesn’t equal success. The losing team were also heavily criticised for their mistakes. These people are young, they’re going to make mistakes, that’s how you learn. They still made hundreds of pounds profit on 1 task! That’s business and that shows the potential of these individuals. But it’s things like that which are overlooked by viewers, because it doesn’t make good TV.

But anyway, despite the mockery, the bad jokes and the humiliation, I’ll be watching the rest of the series, tweeting along to the show, watching these young

people learn and keeping an eye open for what most viewers won’t see – the brilliant achievements of these young minds at work.

COMEDY THURSDAYS ARE BACK The world’s favourite comedy – The Big Bang Theory – returns to E4 with a brand new season! Last time we saw the unusual group of friends, they were celebrating their 100th episode. This time around, Howard’s on his space trip while his friends are back at home living their ‘normal’ lives. In its sixth season, The Big Bang Theory still manages to stay fresh by introducing new characters, but most of all by remaining original. A new favourite is 2 Broke Girls which hit our screens earlier in the year, but back with another season, Thursday nights on E4 will be its home for now, as the two girls from different walks of life continue to manage life’s everyday struggles. So tune in to E4 every Thursday for brand new episodes of everybody’s favourite comedies!

BOOK RELEASE: BOULLE’S JEWELS, THE BUSINESS OF LIFE

If you were asked to name somebody who could successfully sport a suit, a blanket jacket, a goatee and a skateboard, only one person could possibly come to mind. We’re of course talking about Francis Boulle, star of hit scripted reality show Made In Chelsea. His unique character can’t help but win over every viewer, and his book is certain to see that continue. Francis once said “capitalism makes you beautiful,” and Boulle’s Jewels, The Business of Life might just make you think along the same lines. One thing the book could certainly help you with is learning how to live the life of Chelsea, just like Francis. You don’t even need to have inherited the family business! That’s right, in his new book, Francis will act as your mentor, teaching you exactly how to win in business, dating, finance and pranks. That last one has probably been honed since he started living with Chelsea pals Proudlock and Jamie! You can get your copy over at Amazon. It will probably make a great Christmas gift!

200 applied, 29 were shortlisted, 15 were chosen!

In September 2012, the search was launched to find 15 Young Ambassadors aged 13-26 to join InspirEngage. One of those chosen was The Student Magazine’s very own Adam Jones who will now contribute his skills towards the core purpose of the organisation throughout the 18 month opportunity, during which time he’ll learn first-hand what it’s like within a global social enterprise. Despite the opportunity only being posted on Twitter and Facebook, it attracted over 200 applications! Many of those applicants cited the genuine desire to simply make a difference as a reason for applying. Founder and CEO, Melody Hossaini, said; "Not long ago, in the midst of designing new programmes for InspirEngage, I had a thought. The people whom we intend to benefit from these services, should centrally be involved in shaping them. InspirEngage is there to serve young people, and our team should reflect this." The former BBC ‘The Apprentice’ candidate will be supporting the Ambassadors directly to develop skills and

experience over the next 18 months. After discovering he was one of the 15 selected, Adam said: “I’m very excited to have been given the chance to work with Melody in a leading organisation passionate about supporting young people to develop Life Skills and become more enterprising. I’ve long been passionate about business, but having the opportunity to contribute my skills and experience towards making a real change is incredible.” Working in more than 100 countries and reaching over 1 million people, InspirEngage International was established in 2009 and is now one of the world’s leading organisations in skills training and youth engagement with the central aim of supporting students to develop Life Skills to feel more confident, work-ready and enterprising. Dr. Eric Chivian, Nobel Peace Prize Winner said “InspirEngage International is training young people how best to tackle the leading social justice and culturally dividing challenges of our time.”

4 MORE YEARS As Barack Obama secures re-election to serve a second term in the White House, we take a look back at Election Day and look ahead to what America might expect in the future.

Picture: President Obama and Vice-President Joe Biden celebrate winning a second term

Picture: President Obama makes his victory speech

OBAMA’S BACK November 6 2012 was set to be the climax to one of the longest Presidential Election campaigns in history. And what a nail-biting climax it was! In the final weeks of the campaign, polls told us just how close the race had become. It was billed to be one of the closest races ever, going right down to the wire, but in the end, Obama secured a second term in Office with a convincing victory (in terms of ECVs). So what happened? Where did it all go so wrong for Mitt Romney? He campaigned into the final hours but failed to make the gains he desperately needed from the swing states. He’d connected well with the voters, had gained the trust of the electorate and even came up with some promising policy ideas, but despite all of that, he failed to convert support into votes. Historically speaking, Obama shouldn’t even have been competitive in this race. Never before has a President been re-elected when the economy has been in such a dire state, when unemployment has been so high. But what Obama was able to trade on was the fact that unemployment levels were decreasing; he hadn’t been able to meet his 2008 target, but he’d made a start – all he needed was time, and that’s what the voters gave him.

I think the increasingly savvy electorate was able to see that Obama hadn’t met his targets, but he’d begun the difficult journey down the right path, whereas Romney’s prescription for the economy wasn’t one for growth. With that in mind, this was the perfect time for Obama to remain resolute, rather than become inspired. This wasn’t a time for a change of direction. As the night progressed and state results kept rolling in, it became increasingly clear that Romney’s path to the White House was getting tighter and tighter. Then, at 4am UK time, Obama took a commanding lead with 244 ECVs to Romney’s 178.

It was just a matter of time until the President reached that magical figure of 270.A few minutes later Obama tweeted “This happened because of you. Thank you.” As celebrations began at Obama HQ, it all seemed a little premature, until Ohio announced their result, pushing the incumbent over the finish line, ending a hard-fought battle. It was at that moment Romney’s ambition of reaching the White House could no longer be achieved, despite his strong belief that he could make things work, supported by his business background and incredible drive. It’s a shame that it wasn’t until his final speech we got to see another

side to Romney, the side of the family man. It’s that crucial element that was missing from his campaign, and an element his opponent was able to take advantage of. Obama’s speech was even more spectacular, looking beyond his loyal supporters to the country as a whole. Using the theme of ‘the best is yet to come’, the President was able to connect all voters and remind them that it’s not about what can be done for them, but by them – a powerful message which takes the country back to its founding roots of self-government and serving as a reminder that the electorate’s role doesn’t end with a vote, but is continuous. US PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

LOOKING AHEAD On the subject of shaping future elections, there’s one change yet to mention. It’s a change occurring right now in the make-up of US society and history tells us it will greatly increase support for the Democrats over the coming decades.

50,000 Hispanics becoming old enough to vote every month, they’re sure to have a huge impact in the future.

Traditionally Democratleaning, the Hispanics will be a huge problem for Republicans in upcoming elections, raising questions I am of course talking about about the future direction of the rise of Hispanics, a group the Republican Party. Zayn Malik Congratulations on an amazing year. How’s it been? “Crazy! This award is a big honour. This year has been incredible, from winning a Brit Award to getting a No.1 album in America.” Has your girlfriend Perrie helped your confidence? [Zayn is dating Perrie Edwards from Little Mix] “Yes, I’m a big believer in the motto, ‘Behind every great man there’s a great woman’. And she’s great.” What do you do when you’re not winning awards? “I’m a couch potato. I love to stay in and just watch a DVD with the missus. Or we all go over to Louis’ house and watch X Factor. Perrie is massively into it. That’s what I look forward to most. I like going back home to Bradford and chilling with my mum and dad, and a cup of tea too!” Harry Styles Does it annoy you when people say you’re a ladies’ man? “No. I feel so lucky to be in this position, I’m not entitled to get annoyed. I’m not half as busy as they make me out to be! A lot of the time, the way it’s portrayed is that I only see women in a sexual way. But I grew up with just my mum and sister, so I respect women a lot.” Do you have a type? “There's someone I like... but this girl... isn't my 'type’. It’s more about the person. How they act, their body language, if they can laugh at themselves. I find ambition really attractive too – if someone’s good at something they love doing. I want someone who is driven.” Louis Thomlinson You’ve been with your girlfriend Eleanor for a year. What do you love about her? “She studies politics at university and when she sits and talks about that, I find it really attractive. I think it’s important for both of you to have independence. I feel like if she didn’t have that and wasn’t striving for a good career, it’d be weird.” Do you worry about her meeting other men at uni? “She’s gorgeous, but no, I don’t. We both trust each other – I spend a lot of time out of the country on tour. She often flies out so I see her a lot. I think the key to a good relationship is being best friends too. I spend more time with her and the band than I do with anyone else. She’s really great. Niall Horan Are you confident with girls? “I’m not really a flirt, I just try to be myself. I’ve got loads of good female friends, like Tulisa, but every time I’m pictured with her, people say we’re going out. I don’t really have a type, but for banter she’s brilliant. She loves playing PlayStation. Tulisa is cool as f**k.” What don’t you get about women? “Why everything is always a game.” Ouch! Tell us who’s the sexiest woman you’ve kissed? “Katy Perry. It was amazing and very purple – she had purple lipstick on. I don’t think there will ever be anything cooler than kissing her… until I marry her maybe!”

Liam Payne What’s it like reading about the other guys’ love lives in the papers? “Most of the time that’s how I find things out! With Harry, everything happens so quickly. Harry is actually quite secretive. He tells us some things, but others he keeps secret.”

REVIEWED: ONE DIRECTION - TAKE ME HOME It’s ever so easy to write One Direction’s new album off as another hit from an X-Factormanufactured band, but to do so would be completely wrong. Of course, any non-fan will approach Take Me Home with a certain degree of apprehension, but when they take a listen, they might go as far as to describe it as phenomenal. Or maybe that just describes the band itself. The X-Factor-born group have earned the right to call themselves the biggest boyband in the world over the last 12 months, breaking the US market like no other British group in history. Live While We’re Young enjoyed the biggest opening week for any non-US act, so it’s safe to assume the boys’ global success will only continue. Their success will seem a little confusing to some, mostly because they were born from the X-Factor. Seemingly only a hit amongst teenage girls, other people will probably only be familiar with their breakthrough single What Makes You Beautiful. Now, one song on the album – Live While We’re Young – does appear to copy, almost exactly, Clash’s Should I Stay Or Should I Go? but despite that, it does introduce the style of the album by putting a new take on 80’s pop, rather than trudging the usual boyband R&B route. Taking note of certain lyrics like “I want to be the first to take it all the way,” one can’t help but wonder what parents might think, but in today’s society, teenagers are surely capable of dreaming up more inappropriate things all by themselves. Throughout the album, songs are welcomed with varying degrees of quality. Some have you singing along all day, while others are truly painful to listen to. Maybe that’s because this isn’t being written by an 11-year-old girl though… There are, however, some elements of the album which are quite excellent. Ed Sheeran has lent his unique qualities as an artist to the boys’ new album. Little Things seems to insist that flaws are what makes a person unique, continuing an apparent trend we’ve seen with past One Direction singles. Overall, it’s an album which will certainly please the band’s fan base, but it won’t be breaking any new ground, nor will it attract new fans in their masses.

A MASSIVE BLOW FOR SNOOKER Seven-time World Champion and recently retired Stephen Hendry says Ronnie O’Sullivan’s decision to pull out of the 2012/13 season is a “massive blow” for snooker. “In snooker we have very few superstars and Ronnie was a superstar. The crowds that came to watch him were larger than for any other player,” Hendry said. O’Sullivan, who is reigning World Champion, said in May he would take a 6-month sabbatical from the growing sport after winning the title earlier in the year. Expected to play the International Championship in China, O’Sullivan withdrew on doctors’ advice. Since then, he has announced he will not take part in the remainder of the snooker calendar. Legend of the sport Stephen Hendry was shocked at his old rival’s decision, but is supportive of his choices. “I hope we see him back playing one day because he is the best player in the world. There is no doubt he will go down in history as one of the best players of all time.” “Like I found as well, if you are not enjoying the game, then don’t play. The most important thing for a person is their health and enjoyment of life,” said Hendry. O’Sullivan’s move has raised questions as to whether or not he’ll ever play competitively again. But one thing is for certain; the likes of Judd Trump, Mark Selby, John Higgins and Mark Williams will have a much easier time of things without the world’s greatest player taking part. 51

WHO’S ON THE WINNING TRACK? ARTICLE BY ADAM JONES

We’re achingly close to the end of the 2012 Formula 1 season and there are just two drivers in real contention for the Drivers’ Title, but who will it be?

or at the track. Producing an update which makes a hundredth difference each lap seems insignificant, but when the stakes are so high, it could be the difference between winning and losing.

Alonso has been closing in on reigning World Champion Sebastian Vettel for much of the season, using his race-competitive Ferrari to make up for what’s lacking in qualifying. But is that enough?

Then there’s Alonso himself, who’s been confident of winning throughout the season. Any F1 fan will tell you he’s in the top two drivers in the field – the other being Sebastian Vettel. He seems very much at home with Using race pace alone, Alonso probably Ferrari and that’s been reflected in the races, wouldn’t be able to take the Drivers’ crown, so let’s see if he can bring every contributing but there are so many other qualities that could factor together and make it work. prove advantageous. But we mustn’t forget about Vettel. He’s the The team itself has a proud history behind it current World Champion and drives the which spurs each and every team member to fastest car on the track. Red Bull seems to be do their best and develop the car as much as able to turn a disaster into success, as we saw possible, whether they’re at the Maranello HQ in Singapore when Vettel started from the pits and stormed to a podium finish. Whoever said the young German can’t race has been proven wrong several times over. If he starts at the front, he pulls out a lead; if he starts at the back, he puts everything in to end up finishing with the race leaders. Perhaps that’s down to his mind-set – before the race in Singapore he was playing a drum kit and told team boss Christian Horner “I’ll see you on the podium,” knowing full well he would be sitting in the pits when the lights went out. He can’t be underestimated in the final races of the 2012 season, especially as he remains ahead of closest rival Alonso, who is equally sure to pull out all the stops in the hope of turning the championship in his favour.

TOP GEAR LIVE 2012 – A RECORD BREAKER The curtain has come down on the ‘biggest and boldest’ Top Gear Live ever seen in the UK. The action-packed four-day automotive extravaganza staged at the NEC, Birmingham (25-28 October) attracted unprecedented crowd numbers, unrivalled support from the motor industry and also established a dramatic new World Record for the first double loop-the-loop by a

motorcycle. In total nearly 56,000 Top Gear fans savoured the nine live Arena Shows hosted by the turbo-charged triumvirate of Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May, easily surpassing the previous single venue record of 49,000 set at Earls Court in 2009. Taking their lead from the BBC television programme, the Arena Shows featured a hugely entertaining mix of jaw-dropping stunts, mouth-watering supercars and hilarious challenges. Highlights included a timely tribute to 50 years of James Bond, a crazy game of car conkers plus Clarkson and the TV show’s tame racing driver – The Stig – taking on the armed forces in an in-door autotest shoot-out. The Arena Show culminated with a member of the intrepid Top Gear Live Stunt Team completing the breath taking Deadly 720+, the first back-to-back loops ever completed on two wheels. As a pulse-quickening curtain raiser to the Clarkson, Hammond and May shows, fans were also treated to live Track Performances overseen by two former Top Gear presenters Vicky Butler-Henderson and Tiff Needell. As well as staging a series of entertaining ‘Grudge Matches’, this section of the show included a rare UK appearance from YouTube driving sensation Ken Block on Thursday plus a live version of the TV show’s ‘Star in a Reasonably Priced Car’. A stellar line-up of sporting and showbiz celebrities competed against the clock in the reasonably priced Kia Cee’d hatchback with multiple swimming champion Mark Foster coming out on top ahead of master baker Paul Hollywood and Olympic boxing gold medallist Anthony Joshua. Supercars were out in force, too, with two sensational Bugatti Veyrons on display in the adjoining exhibition hall alongside an adrenaline-pumping array of speed machines from past and current generations many kindly loaned by the Lamborghini Owners Club, London Motor Museum, Prindiville and Topaz Detailing. The exhibition also starred several famous props from Top Gear including The Cool Wall and Studio Stage Set plus various Challenge Cars as also seen on TV. Aston Martin, Citroen, Infiniti, Mercedes-Benz and Infiniti were among a record number of motor manufacturers represented at Top Gear Live while other top brands such as Dunlop, Forza and Virgin Media were maximising the opportunity to promote themselves to the record numbers of show-goers.
