Get Involved! Make, Do & Friends... What’s your view of Stradbroke? A local arts charity is inviting Stradbroke residents to contribute to poems about the village – by picking a picture and then having a chat on the phone with a poet. The home page of the Stradbroke Village Archive (http://stradbrokearchive.org.uk/) features a map of the village, stuck with numerous pins; each pin represents an image or document relating to that particular spot. Residents are asked to click on these pins to view the images and select the one that appeals to them most; it may be a spot they know, or a memory it evokes or it may be just because it’s pretty and makes them feel happy. That image provides the focus for a chat with poet and performer, Arji Manuelpillai; he will telephone the resident and, in talking about the image, gather different views of Stradbroke, from which he will create a series of poems.

It is hoped that the poems, along with copies of the images, may be displayed in the library café for people to enjoy, once we’re all able to start meeting up again. They will also be posted to the Make, Do & Friends blog site at https://www.makedoandfriends.co.uk/ Make, Do & Friends is a creative programme, intended for older people (55+) living in rural areas of Suffolk and run by Suffolk Artlink. Anyone wishing to take part should first contact either Candida or Carrie (details below) who will be responsible for setting up the phone calls and generally making sure that all you have to do is enjoy taking part. If you would like to take part, but don’t use the internet, please call us and we’ll see what we can do to include you in the project. Participation is free, and places are limited, so please contact us as soon as you can, so that Arji can get in touch and start painting a picture of Stradbroke in poetry. A wonderful reminder of hope… in the hard times of life… Psalm 121 (NIV) A song of ascents. 1 I lift up my eyes to the hills— where does my help come from? 2 My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. 3 He will not let your foot slip— he who watches over you will not slumber; 4 indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. 5 The Lord watches over you— the Lord is your shade at your right hand; 6 the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. 7 The Lord will keep you from all harm— he will watch over your life; 8 the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore. Please let me know if we can pray for you or your loved ones. May God bless us all, Bruce 01379 388744 or 07484 219265 or psalm34.8@yahoo.com

With no fund-raising able to take place, we are hoping when the lockdown lifts to have a massive sale in church. We have been given lots of goodies from a house clearance and can’t wait to start selling the items. Thanks to all who keep sending donations for the church. We still have to pay our way, so many, many thanks. Mary Ellis

From the Rectory…

Dear friends and neighbours, We have all had an unusual year with coronavirus, Brexit and unusually wet weather since mid-September. It is very easy to worry and get stressed about things, especially about things we cannot control. Many people are struggling because they have lost a loved one, their job or maybe their home to flooding. Others are struggling because they feel house bound and some with trying to run a home and educate their children. You may not be stressed by any of these things, but something will stress and worry you. As a farmer, I think it’s the weather that stresses me more than anything, but as I get older I am getting better at not worrying about things. God tells us not to worry or be afraid but instead trust Him. We ought to look around us and count our blessings more often than we do. We all have a lot to be thankful for, living in beautiful rural Suffolk with its wonderful seasons, skies and sunset, having lovely places we can walk, see and smell the beauty of God’s creation, seeing the wildlife all around us and having loving, caring friends and families. It is all too easy to see the negatives rather than the positives. The story is told of a man who grumbled because he had no shoes, until he saw someone with no feet. God has given, and continues to give us many gifts, all undeserved, and the best gift is His love for us day by day. He wants us to be part of His family around the world and that’s why Jesus came 2000 years ago, so we could trust Him and be a part of God’s family. Yes, we’ve got coronavirus, Brexit and wet weather, but let’s choose to see the positives around us and thank God for our many blessings and share what we can with those in need. Every blessing, Revd Peter Schwieri

At our February meeting we co-opted Mandy Allen onto the Council. Since the last meeting Chris Edwards resigned from the Council which means we now have one vacancy on the Council. If you would like to be considered for the vacancy please email Odile our clerk on stradbrokepc@outlook.com for more information. I would like to pay a particular tribute to Chris Edwards for work he has done on the Council, in particular as part of the Neighbourhood Plan. He was a key member of the team that produced the neighbourhood plan and we are pleased that the Council will still be working closely with him as the Chair of the Stradbroke Community Land Trust. Thanks Chris! Our broadband working group was pleased to report that County Broadband recently held an online webinar to give details of their plans to bring high speed and reliable full fibre broadband to Stradbroke and seven other local villages. If you missed the webinar you can find out more at https://countybroadband.co.uk/services/why-hyperfast/ We also had a report from our Climate Change Working group, which is a newly formed group, outlining their plans to respond to the climate emergency in the village. Ideas on the table are installing electric car charging points, planting trees and meadows and promoting renewable energy heating solutions such as heat pumps. If you have any ideas of what you think we could do in Stradbroke to help counter climate change please get in touch. The working group would also like to recruit members who aren’t councillors. We also discussed plans to refurbish and bring the chapel at the cemetery back into use. We are investigating the best way to do this and will make decisions at a future meeting about the way forward. Elections for Suffolk County Council and for the appointment of the Suffolk Police and Crime Commissioner will take place on Thursday 6th May 2021 in the usual way. The Court House The Court House was originally The Corn Hall. The building was commissioned from public donation, mainly farmers and tradesmen, and erected in 1854. The Revd. Allen placed a message on parchment in a bottle under the foundation stone on 27th March of that year. The Corn Hall served Stradbroke very well for almost fifty years. In April/May of 1900 the building was sold for £300 when its name and function changed to become The Court House. Prior to this the Stradbroke Petty Sessions were held mainly at The Queens Head Inn. Again, the building served Stradbroke well and the following is a peek in time of its work: In October 1930 there were in all 13 cases to be heard that day. The proceedings were held in front of eight lay persons and the Revd. Shaw. To start the day, a new magistrate’s clerk, Mr Harold Warne, was enrolled. The first case was a Laxfield man who was accused of not paying maintenance of £4:15s. The returning officer stated that the accused had received wages of £3 but had made no attempt to provide for his wife. He was ordered to pay £4:15s plus costs. Next. Two young soldiers from Dover who were seen by PC Cotton, riding bicycles on the Hoxne Road without lights. The young men had tried to escape by cycling away but were forced to dismount and run on foot. One was found hiding behind a gatepost having fallen over and the other was found in a nearby pond having nearly drowned. They were found guilty and each fined five shillings. The next case was the shooting of an Osprey by a local Miller who mistook it for a hawk. The court accepted the miller’s plea and the case was dismissed. Next another ‘no lights when riding a bicycle ‘ case brought a fine of 5/-. Then a frequent offender was called before the bench - Except he didn’t appear because his car had broken down. He was accused of failing to produce his pig dealer licence for inspection as required by the Swine Fever Order. To add to this the accused used obscene language when challenged. On fining the man £5 it was noted that he had accrued 45 previous convictions. Next, again ‘no lights after lighting up time’ but this time it’s a car. PC Cotton noticed the driver was driving his car very close to the rear of another car which did have lights. The driver was fined 50/-. ‘Wilful damage’ is next. A group of lads had been annoying residents in Hoxne and from the report it seems that this was an ongoing problem. One of these young men was accused of throwing a large stone at a door which caused damage. He pleaded guilty. Superintendent Ruffles stepped forward to inform the bench that the young man’s father was in the army and away on foreign service. The lad’s guardian admitted that he was out of control. Under Superintendent Ruffles recommendation the young man was put on probation for two years and ordered to pay costs. The last case before the bench was that of a farmer who had bought two identical cars but paid for one licence. When stopped for an offence and asked to produce his documents for the non-licenced car, he fraudulently produced those of his other car and swapped the number plates. Fined £4:8s plus costs. The Court House is now home to Stradbroke library and post office. This building is, and always has been, a place for the community and adapts to the community’s need whilst retaining its name and through that name, its link to the past. Source: BNA, Stradbroke Village Archive NB: The Guardian, 30th March, 2016 “Some libraries have adapted to change brilliantly: Stradbroke Library in Suffolk won an award earlier this month, for its clever combination of library and post office (the post office revenues have boosted the library’s income and library visits have shot up from 1000 per month in 2013/4 to 2700 per month now). A village that might easily have ended up with neither library nor post office has managed to retain both” Natalie Haynes. Ann Readman, SARA

Radio Stradbroke

Radio Stradbroke eagerly ticks off each passing week as we approach one full year of daily broadcasts of the 'Home Service', which has continued through snow, rain & sun, and hopefully the impending power cut next month. Thursday 25th March is the Anniversary. We cannot throw a big party, but hopefully along with you the loyal listeners, we can celebrate something on air. At this time of year 'Stradbroke Music Day' enters our minds. Of course we have no idea whether we will be allowed to hold the event on July 3rd, but it is something to look forward to and cling on to, although of course it is the hope that kills you. .. Thank you for your continued support. www.radiostradbroke.co.uk Michael Hugman

Letters To The Editors

All Saint’s Church Heating The PCC would like to inform the village that we have now received the authority to install new electrical heaters in the Church. We would like to thank all those that generously donated funds for this project. Peter Chetwynd, Churchwarden Local family which, out of tragedy, have found hope... You may or may not know the background of this story but back in August 2017 my late husband, Mike Ginn died at the age of 29 from Leukaemia after a year-long battle with the disease. He left myself and our daughter Hope without a husband and Father. Hope was just 15 months old when he died. Throughout Mike’s illness he wrote a daily blog which was read by over 10,000 people across the world. Mike asked me whilst he was in St Elizabeth Hospice receiving end of life care that he wanted his blog published into a physical book so that our daughter Hope can read his story. I am still working at St Elizabeth Hospice as a fundraiser and absolutely love my job as I have both the understanding and empathy of how families are feeling as the hospice cares for their loved ones. It really is an incredible place. Now 3.5 years after Mike’s death the blog has been published and is available on Amazon to purchase as a physical book or an online E-book. The book can be purchased on Amazon.co.uk. The book is called Diary of a 20 something cancer fighter. It can either be ordered as a paperback copy or as a e-book. Fiona Ginn I would like to say a big thank you to all my kind neighbours and friends for all the kind offers of shopping and cleaning away the snow, the last few weeks, many thanks. Edna Rook

Suffolk and North East Essex Long Covid Assessment Service (SNELCAS)

People in Suffolk and north east Essex suffering significant physical or mental health issues associated with COVID19 now have access to a single, integrated package of care. The Suffolk and North East Essex Long Covid Assessment Service (SNELCAS) is a virtual clinic which will refer patients directly to the appropriate services or specialist clinics for their needs. Clinicians within the Suffolk and North East Essex Integrated Care System (SNEE ICS) have so far treated more than 700 patients who have developed longer-term health problems after recovering from the acute phase of COVID-19 in hospital. A significant number of patients have also been managed in the community after reporting symptoms to their GPs. Long Covid is defined by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) as, ‘signs and symptoms that develop during or following an infection consistent with COVID-19 which continue for more than 12 weeks and are not explained by an alternative diagnosis’. The condition usually presents with clusters of often overlapping symptoms that may change over time and can affect any system within the body. Many people can also experience generalised pain, fatigue, persistent high temperature or mental health problems. Patients reporting symptoms to their GP that are significantly impacting their health and wellbeing will first be assessed to rule out other potential causes and, if necessary, will be referred into Secondary Care for specialist treatment. If after 12 weeks their symptoms have not improved, their GP will refer them into the SNELCAS screening hub. From there they will be further assessed and can be referred into a combination of other services such as physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, dietetics, mental health services and social prescribing, with further hospital treatment if necessary. Sports Roundup

Stradbroke Cricket Club

In a mood of hope or perhaps, denial, the Cricket Club has forged on with its business in readiness for a new season, starting with the AGM. The Committee now boasts its highest complement in living memory. We would like to think that there is a renewed enthusiasm for the Club in troubled times, the cynic in us all would point to meetings held via 'Zoom', not requiring anyone turning out on a cold night. Whatever the motivation, the following Officers were elected: Hon. President - Don Lummis, Chairman & Groundsman - Michael Hugman, Vice Chairman - Ian Flintoff, Secretary - Malcolm Tenneson, Treasurer - Caroline Johnson, Safeguarding Officer & Youth Development - Fergus Morgan, Club Captain - Matt Wise, Minutes Secretary - James Gilbee. Other Committee Members: Richard Pierce-Saunderson, Andy Webb, Alan Hutchison, Ian Cattermole, Steve Perrin, Thomas Hargrave. We welcome the last three names to the Committee. Fixtures are just about complete. As ever we are waiting on updates from the ECB on possible restart dates. More news on that next month (hopefully). Whatever happens on the field, off it the Club is on a sound footing. Thank you for your support . Michael Hugman

Faster and more reliable Broadband for Stradbroke The Parish Council’s broadband working group have been looking at options to get faster and more reliable broadband in Stradbroke. We looked at several options and have decided to work with County Broadband who are a local East Anglian supplier of high speed full-fibre broadband. They provide their broadband services to rural communities across Essex, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire. Most recently they have started to supply villages in South Norfolk such as Bressingham, Pulham Market and Great Moulton. County Broadband provide what is called a fullfibre broadband service bringing a fibre-optic cable right to the door of every premises rather than relying on old-fashioned copper for the last part of the connection as BT’s fibre to the cabinet solution does. This enables two main benefits. · The connection is much faster. Currently most people in Stradbroke have connection speeds between 10Mbps and 30Mbps. Full-fibre connections are available from 50Mbps to up to 1000Mbps · The connection is much more reliable. Copper cables are an old-fashioned technology that was never designed for high speed internet. How would County Broadband do this? County Broadband are able to use the existing BT open reach infrastructure such as telephone poles and ducts in the pavement to bring their fibre cables to the door of each house. Some people might need some work done such as digging a trench and this would be individually agreed. All installation is included free if you decide to take a connection from County Broadband. How much would this cost? Installation is always free. Current prices for broadband are shown below: Speed

Please help to get this option for the whole village! Express an interest in the service without any commitment to buy! To bring the service to Stradbroke, County Broadband needs “expressions of interest” from around 40% of Stradbroke households. Expressing an interest does not mean that you are committing to buy the service just that you will receive further information from them and be offered the chance to place an order. To express an interest: 1) Go to https://countybroadband.co.uk/ 2) Where it says “let’s get you started” enter your postcode into the box and click “go” 3) Scroll down the page until you see the “register your interest” option, click “go” Fill the online form in with your details and click “register” (If you had a form sent to you in the post you can also fill that in and return it.) When could this happen? If enough people express an interest the project moves into the second phase (orders) and then if enough orders are placed into the third phase (design and build). Once the service is built then County broadband will be in touch to arrange individual connections. This could happen later in 2021. Having been contacted by a number of parents and schools concerned about the disparity of higher needs education funding here in Suffolk compared to our neighbouring counties, I have urged the Education Secretary to urgently review Suffolk’s funding allocation and to level up education funding for our children and young people. I share the concerns of parents and schools and I am growing increasingly concerned that without a meaningful injection of cash, many of Suffolk’s children risk losing out on their fair share. We already know that Suffolk is facing a substantial increase in the number of children and young people in need of additional support, yet rates for special school places in the county are significantly below those of our neighbours. Suffolk children and Suffolk schools deserve better and at the very least, a level playing field. The current funding allocation is not right and nor is it fair and this is why I have written to the Secretary of State setting out the case for Suffolk and requesting that his Department levels up Suffolk’s SEND funding to secure a fairer future for our brilliant children and young people. Although our schools currently remain closed under the current restrictions, I have been heartened to hear of the innovative examples of home learning, both from parents and our teachers. That said, home learning cannot take the place of being in class for face to face teaching and I remain hopeful that our schools can begin to return in early March. Ahead of our schools returning, the Government continues to make great progress with the vaccination programme and I am continuing to press the case with the Vaccination Minister and local health leaders to make sure that Suffolk residents are invited to receive their vaccine just as soon as is practicably possible. As more and more of us receive the vaccine, light is very definitely at the end of the tunnel with many millions of people having being vaccinated across the country. This is a fantastic achievement and my thanks go to all who have been involved in co-ordinating the herculean effort of rolling out the vaccination programme. We still have some way to go and cannot rest on our laurels, so it remains vital that we all continue to play our part in helping to stop the spread of COVID. We mustn’t drop our guard now when we have come so far and the end goal is in sight. The single most important action we can all take is to follow the guidance to stay at home, protect the NHS and save lives. www.drdanielpoulter.com

COVID19 - LIFE IN STRADBROKE PROJECT Send us your #vaccineselfies

The Stradbroke Archive and Record Association (SARA) has set up a new online archive to capture what life is like in lockdown for the residents of Stradbroke. It is hoped that by collecting our social history of this global event in real time, that generations to come will have a real window into our village experience in 2020/21 This new archive is slightly different to the other two online archives, it is designed to allow really easy upload by villagers of their contributions - anyone can add photographs, short videos, memories (as text) and audio recordings from computers, tablets and mobile phones! SARA want to capture the every day types of experiences as well as the special events such as VE Day, Remembrance Day, Christmas Day etc... SARA want the village of now and in the future to see how the global pandemic has changed and affected our day to day life, so join in and add your experiences. Go to
