Funfair, inflatables, circus skills training, creative craft workshops and more….there’s plenty to keep thekids entertained while you enjoy the acts, food and drink at Suffolk’s premium family music festival. Now in its 5th year Stradbroke’s annual summer music festival (6-7 July) is raising the bar with a mix of international top selling artists alongside the cream of the crop of local musical talent. With more music for mum and dad there’s also more than ever for kids to do! Alongside the ever popular inflatable slide and bouncy castles, 2018 sees the introduction of Stocks FunFair to the show ground, bringing a range of thrill seeking rides including dodgems and flying elephants that kids (and we’re sure more than a few adults) will enjoy. Let the kids spend their pocket money and keep out of your hair whilst you soak up the sun and sounds of some brilliant artists. Festival host and compere Bazza Bazar will be taking time out to run children’s circus skills workshops on Saturday and Just Add Kids Creative Workshops will be on hand to keep youngsters busy with a range of craft and other fun activities. Nurturing stars of the future, pupils from Tiddlywinks Nursery plus Stradbroke and Wilby Primary Schools will be taking to the stage on Saturday morning to open the days events with a range of well-rehearsed acts. This all takes place during a 2hours free access to the festival for all local children and their parents. Tickets will be needed to enjoy the rest of the jam packed weekend – and you’ll want to be there if only for Mercury Music Prize winner Badly Drawn Boy, who headlines on Friday night, and Number 1 chart toppers Sam and the Womp, who bring things to a close on Saturday night. Noted as one of the best value weekend festivals in East Anglia, tickets are still available at www.stradipshere.co.uk or Stradbroke Spar. See page 2 for ticket options and prices. From the Rectory

Dear friends and neighbours Goodbye from Cathy Oh my ....where do I start....? What an incredible three years we’ve had! They said that there was no life in the ‘sticks’ ...that it was dead... how wrong could they have been! We‘ve had an amazing time with you all here in the Sancroft benefice and I’ve learnt so much. Both Andrew and I are so grateful for you... your generosity of spirit, love and encouragement has been wonderful and we can’t thank you enough. Not all curacies work... but right from the start being here has felt like a dance (most of you know how I love the metaphor of dance). It has of course been hard work at times ...with lots of late nights and never ending lists of things to do... but I can honestly say it has been wonderful and you’ve enabled me to learn and to grow in a way I could not have imagined. There were some interesting services in the beginning; times when the words (particularly BCP words) have all come out, but in completely the wrong order, and times when I’ve lost my place or forgotten the words altogether, but I have received nothing but love and encouragement from you all... and I am so grateful! Susan has been a wonderful training incumbent; scaffolding my learning so I never felt out of my depth, continually calling me to reflect on where God is and what he might be saying in each service and situation. And most of all she’s allowed me to be me... to use the gifts God has given me and to grow... and I think we’ve had fun! God bless and very much love, Cathy and Andrew Xx A prayer to help us in the coming days: God help us not to despise or oppose what we do not understand Help us remember that every day is your gift and ought to be used according to your will; to love one another and to love you Lord.

Cathy

W.I.

The June Meeting Of Stradbroke W.I. 2018 As usual the meeting opened with strong rendition of Jerusalem then we settled to the business of the evening. Gill dealt with the routine business and Carol gave the general report . Caroline and Loreli were thanked for the floral offerings and refreshments to come , birthday posies were presented then Gwyneth was invited to give a report on here trip to Cardiff where the resolutions were to be debated and discussed. Our own branch meeting had previously discussed and rejected the resolution which concerned mental health needs as it was felt that the matter already had a very high profile but the conference voted to support it and the resolution was carried. We all know folks with problems and have probably needed some support ourselves at times so let’s hope and work to improve the lot of others who perhaps don’t have a good bunch of W.I. friends to help them through. Next Jane Merritt bravely took the floor to explain the vagaries of the new heating system which seems to be a little troublesome and having teething problems. Hopefully there will be no more chilly meetings but for those who muttered I must inform you that the colour of the walls will remain ,hey ho can’t win them all but we appreciate the explanations, thank you Jane. As reported previously there is concern that older people and others in our local area are lacking in the activity and exercise areas and that loneliness and a sense of isolation are apparent and a problem. To this end SCC will be providing a mentor for Stradbroke and Fressingfield to come 1 day a week to help support set up and encourage solutions to some of these problems .This will be for the period of 1 year and will be launched on June 28th. No further details yet but it is hoped that the surgeries and other local institutions will be involved with referrals to this project . Thank you to Annie for the update . The ladies then agreed to support the local sports day July 14th and will provide refreshments. Our speaker for the evening was Steve Pomeroy who to the musical strains and narrative which is the opening to the film War of the Worlds came to talk to us about bamboo. Steve a self proclaimed bamboo nutter, and I quote, was overflowing with enthusiasm for bamboo in all its colours and forms and presented us with a quick quiz on our knowledge of bamboo thus providing us, according to how many points we scored, with our own certified, and I choose that word carefully, level of bamboo nuttery, umm. The various colours through black, variegated, bright yellow and green through to the pale bamboo we all know was surprising and offered great interest of colour in the garden. Many other uses were described including fabrics for clothes, building materials ,cooking utensils and crockery , not to mention weapons and useful in the garden and somehow not surprisingly it is used in some medicines. We enjoyed seeing the samples of bamboo and the slide show of so many varieties of bamboo including the hooligan Robusta variety which spreads rapidly through the garden and is used with great caution as rather vicious looking spears push rapidly up through the grass and look positively dangerous. It was a jolly evening and we thanked Steve for sharing his nuttiness with us.After refreshments Dorothy reminded us of the Blossom Appeal at Ipswich Hospital raising money to provide an all in one place breast cancer care unit and we agreed to help to support this project and help to raise money for this, watch this space. The next meeting will be on July 12th when Sheila Harrison will give a talk titled Village People. Come and join us 7.30 pm at the community centre you will be very welcome . Prue Rush

Stradbroke Primary School

Hannah Cragoe teacher at Stradbroke Primary is a nominated finalist in the Raising the Bar awards for her maths co-ordination work in the category “Excellence in Middle Leadership”. Hannah completed the MAST- Primary Specialist Masters Degree in her second and third year of teaching specialising in assisting pupils with mathematical reasoning. She is a Specialist Leader of Education (SLE) providing other teachers with support about maths. Her excellent teaching last year saw 100% of Year 6 pupils at Stradbroke Primary achieve the Expected standard or above in maths. The Executive Headteacher received a letter of congratulations from Nick Gibb (Minister of State for School Standards) because the school was in the top 1% of primary schools in England for mathematics. Hannah achieves outstanding progress from pupils and enables all pupils to excel in this subject. She makes an incredible difference to the pupils she teaches and all year groups make excellent progress with her. In the words of one pupil "Miss Cragoe explains maths so that it makes sense and the difficult things seem easy". Executive Headteacher of Stradbroke Primary Melanie Barrow said: ‘We are really proud of Hannah. She is a very supportive colleague and strives to help children make progress in maths. I have seen unconfident pupils become keen, enthusiastic and talented mathematicians and it is thanks to her teaching”. The Raising the Bar award winners will be announced at a special awards ceremony on Tuesday 10th July 2018. Melanie Barrow, Executive Headteacher, All Saints School Federation

IMAGINE. . . walking from Laxfield to Stradbroke one afternoon in November of 1905 and coming across a procession walking in the opposite direction towards Stradbroke cemetery. You would probably have been amazed. This was the day that the east side of the new cemetery was consecrated. The days events began with a service at All Saints church. The Rural Dean lead the prayers whilst the lesson was read by the church curate and the address given by the Lord Bishop. At the end of the service the congregation progressed towards the cemetery with the chairman of the parish council, Mr H J Neave, heading the procession. Behind members of the council you would have seen the parish clerk, the registrar, the Lord Bishop, the Rural Dean, church wardens, the church choir, and the clergy from Eye, Dennington, Pulham St. Mary Magdalen, Worlingworth, and Wilby. A fantastic sight to see when all the attending clergy were wearing their robes and bling. Finally, the remainder of the village congregation brought up the rear. IMAGINE. . . that you continued your journey towards Stradbroke, and maybe then, you would have done so with the distant sound of hymn singing coming from Barton Green as the day's ceremony came to an end. I just hope that the sun shone and that the rain held off on that glorious Thursday afternoon. The full news report may be found at www.stradbrokearchive.org.uk. Ann Readman SARA

SAGA

This is a good time to increase your strawberry plants. Select runners from the healthiest plants, and use a maximum of three from each plant. Press the plantlet nearest to the main plant on each runner into a 3in. pot of potting compost using a hairpin shaped piece of wire to keep the runner in place. Cut off the extension runners. Sink the pots into the soil around the plants. All remaining runners on all the plants should be cut off back to the plant. Strawberry plants should be replaced every 3 years. As soon as you’ve finished picking summer fruiting raspberries, cut back all the canes that have bourn fruit down to the ground. Tie in this year’s new green canes in their place. White and Red currents need pruning after harvest, aim for an airy goblet shape with about eight or ten branches and remove any suckers. Cut back new growth to about five leaves. With Gooseberries they also need a balanced and open goblet shape. Keep the stem clear to 10 to 15cm by cutting off any new side shoots. Prune the leader back to half of its new growth every year so that the plant makes strong side branches to support the fruit. Runner beans need pinching out when they reach the top of the canes or they will quickly become tangled and top-heavy. Protect the white heads of Cauliflowers from turning yellow in the sun by pulling outside leaves over them. Ivor Hyde

Wingfield and District Gardening Club

Richard and Emma Clark of Panache Plants came to talk to us about hardy exotics. Whilst tender exotics are difficult to keep through the winter, many plants which one may think of as being tender happily survive temperatures down to -15 deg C. It is necessary to provide lots of grit and good drainage together with fertilizer so that they may thrive. Su or shade depends on their individual likes but usually plants can be found for these areas and their seasons lengthened by their position. Root hardy or other plants survive better but one thing they hate is wet and cold. He gave many examples of different gingers and eucomis. He included dahlias and suggested bronze leafed varieties go through the winter well. Big leafy monsters tetrapanics, fan shaped palms, bamboo, tree ferns and bananas. He said that passion flowers could attractively be grown on obilisks and that salvias came in a huge range of colours. Echeveria need a lot of water in summer. We take a summer break and meet again in September. C Traylen

Radio Stradbroke

If all roads lead to Rome, all Radio Stradbroke thoughts lead to Stradisphere. Now in the fifth year as host broadcaster, rather than bask in past glories, we look at ways to improve our output, as Stradisphere itself, raises the bar, booking acts such as 'Badly Drawn Boy'. As well as broadcasting & recording every minute of the festival on 6th & 7th July, DJ Richard Pierce does a show live from the arena at 4pm on Friday 6th, & old friend DJ Dave does the same at 9am on Saturday 7th. Radio Stradbroke will also be providing the PA for fund raiser for Hayley on Sunday 29th July at the Playing field. Having been there, done that, & got the T shirt at Dublogic, Horham Fete, BHF Craft Fair, & the Womens Tour of Britain Cycling in the last month, Radio Stradbroke is a much in demand commodity, particularly when you consider it is basically a self-financing project. It is not a good look begging on street corners for money to keep it afloat, but any financial help is vital whether it be through advertising, sponsoring a show, or a good old fashioned donation. Parish Council Notes From the Chair…

It was very exciting to see the Women's Cycle Tour of Britain pass through Stradbroke earlier this month. It was great to see the streets lined once again with so many people to wave and cheer as the cyclists (and lots of vehicles) passed through the village. After the cycle event our Mid Suffolk District Councillor, Julie Flatman, and her team helped to organise an evening event on the playing field with a huge screen showing "Jungle Book". Many thanks also to the Community Centre, Radio Stradbroke and 1st Fressingfield Scouts who helped at the event. It was also wonderful to see the Flag Deck Party had decorated the church for the occasion. It’s always a spectacular sight! If you are a Stradbroke Vodafone or O2 customer in particular, you may be fed up with the poor reception on your mobile in Stradbroke and the surrounding areas. The Parish Council feel this is an important issue for residents, young and old, so I am writing to all four mobile phone operators to find out when we are likely to get improved coverage especially for mobile Internet. When they respond I will let you know what they have to say. The Parish Council Asset Working Group is working hard to sort out some land and property issues that affect public buildings in Stradbroke. The first success is that we have now agreed with the Community Centre on a way forward to deal with the gates in the children's play area. These will be repaired and moved slightly so they are level with the extension on the side of the community centre. The next council meeting is on Monday 9th July, 7.30pm at the Court House and as usual everyone is very welcome to attend. James Hargrave, Chair of Stradbroke Parish Council

Neighbourhood Plan July/August FAQ

We are pleased to announce that after 4 years of hard work by the community, the Neighbourhood Plan is approaching the final stage. An independent inspector is examining the plan to ensure that the policies conform with all existing planning guidelines and that the changes suggested by statutory bodies, such as Suffolk County Council and the Environment Agency, can be included in the plan. The inspector will send the Parish Council a report including any amendments he would like to see. After we have made the updates recommended, Mid Suffolk District Council will set a date for a referendum. Mid Suffolk will ask us, the residents of Stradbroke, whether we want them to use the plan to guide development over the coming years. We have listed below our final responses to frequently asked questions. All of these and the others we have been publishing over the last few months are on the Parish Council’s website at: https://www.stradbrokepc.org/committees-working-parties Neighbourhood Plan working group. 1. How does the plan get adopted? Mid Suffolk will arrange a referendum. This is the question the residents of Stradbroke will be asked: “Do you want Mid Suffolk District Council to use the neighbourhood plan for Stradbroke to help it decide planning applications in the neighbourhood plan area?” 2. Can the infrastructure (schools, doctors etc) cope? Expert advice has been sought and received to insure the development can be supported and this was an important factor in the site selection process. Your Neighbourhood Plan working group took advice from the following agencies: NHS, Suffolk County Council, UK Power Networks, Anglian Water and the Environment Agency. The plan is designed to bring structured growth to village and ensure that the infrastructure is capable of supporting the growth. By planning for different types of housing the plan allows for the children from up to 250 new homes; the maximum that Suffolk County Council say the schools can accommodate. 3. Are green spaces under threat with these proposed developments? There is a policy in the Plan to protect the identified green spaces; Westhall and play area, Village Gardens and Allotments, playing field including bowling green and tennis courts. The Clerk

Closing date is Wednesday 18th July. Last year’s show was very good but entries were slightly down. Please, if you can, consider entering some classes or two or even more. All help to make a show. (No entries, no show). Please support us. The sale of plants at Woodfields raised £350.00. Thanks for your support. Thinking of entering the show for the first time, who are you going to call? Roly. Worried about entering the show – don’t be. There are no secret skills to showing off your flowers, vegetables or produce . There is a class for you and your children, whether you grow, sew, arrange or cook. I would be willing to show you how to make the best of your entries. It’s a fun event, not the Chelsea Flower Show! If you don’t fancy entering then come along anyway in the afternoon to see what your friends and neighbours have done, and enjoy a cup of tea. There will be a table with flowers, vegetables and pot plants etc for sale. Donations of any surplus vegetables etc would be welcomed. All enquiries to Roly Copping 01379 384839

Forthcoming Events

Stradbroke Cinema

On July 19th we will be showing ‘Darkest Hour’. Oscar winner for Best Leading Actor, Gary Oldman, is magnificent as Churchill. Forget all the other films you have seen of the great leader - this is by far the sharpest, most touching and amusing. The film reminds us of Churchill’s great oratory but also his flawed character and is crisply balanced by Clemmie’s no-nonsense approach to her husband. The plot is really a political thriller with Churchill surrounded by those who want to bring him down but he survives - just! Come along and enjoy watching films with Stradbroke Cinema’s new projector and surround sound system. We think it is the best rural Cinema in Suffolk! Doors open at 7pm and the film starts at 7.30pm. The bar is open before the start and during the interval when ice creams will also be on sale. Everyone is welcome, entrance is £5.50 for adults and £3 for 16s and under. Full details can be found on the Village website that is at www.stradbrokeonline.org.uk Roger Turkington and Jane Merritt

Stradbroke Community Fun Day 2pm July 14th at Westhall

Don’t miss an afternoon of fun and frivolity for all the family. There is something for everyone, young and old alike. You can either, come along and watch others make fools of themselves, or take part yourself in a series of ‘silly’ games and competitions. Events include the very old sport of “Welly-throwing” and, if you fancy your hand as a slip fielder, you can take part in the egg throwing (and catching!) competition. There are also some old favourites from the “its-a-knockout” days which involve wheelbarrows, space-hoppers and water-buckets, and of course there is the customary obstacle race. We also have some new challenges including Walking the Plank, the Dam Busters, and Human 0’s and X’s. If you want to find out what these are, then you’ll have to come along on July 14th. There is no charge or registration, just turn up and enjoy yourself. Light refreshments will be available courtesy of the Stradbroke WI Maria Smith, Julia Nowell, Don Darling, Tony Potts

An evening with Bob Flowerdew

Laxfield and District Horticultural Show

Laxfield and District Horticultural Show is at 2pm on 21st July in Laxfield Village Hall. The Laxfield and District Horticultural Show is much more than just plants and vegetables. There’s a thriving photography section. There’s cookery, too. And there’s a wonderfully broad craft section. We deliberately make our classes inclusive so, for example, there’s a class for “knitted item” which of course could be anything of any size, shape and function as long as it’s knitted! And “novelty item” allows exhibitors to enter any type of craft (or art) not previously mentioned. There are also children’s classes. Our catchment area is wide. Anyone who lives within 20 miles of Laxfield All Saints church is welcome to enter the Show. Show schedule and entry form available online. (Go to Laxfield.online/our-village and follow the link...or just google Laxfield Horticultural Society.) Or phone Bobby Holland on 01986 798961 Catherine Cawood

After applying to enter a team in the SIL, I understand that we have not been accepted. This to my mind seems unbelievable when so many teams are folding. Is this a good way for the league to keep flourishing? A Committee meeting will be held soon to discuss matters. Mary Ellis

Sports Roundup

Stradbroke Cricket Club

The end of June marks the mid point in the cricket season. Rather than hiding the half term report from our parents to avoid explaining 'Must try harder!', the perennial underachievers can point to a genuine improvement. True, availability of players still remains an issue, but that constant Chinese water torture, amplifying the need to keep a Cricket Club, let alone a competitive one, in the village, has seen performances & wins, that a year ago would not have happened. Mid table reflects progress. The word progress does not give enough credit to attempts to reignite the Junior section. Ten 5 - 8yo signed up for 'All Stars', & thoroughly enjoy the innovative sessions designed to entrap them in the cricket web. Considering coaching takes place at four local Primary Schools, twenty junior members at the club can be viewed as disappointing, but we are dealing with a generation of parents, to whom cricket is an alien concept. As far as the 275th Anniversary goes, we are trying to arrange a two day 'test match' on 18th & 19th August. A leap of faith perhaps, but such landmarks only come round, well, every 275 years. As there is no August Monthly, look for further details of the match through our other media outlets. Keep supporting your local cricket club." Michael Hugman

Stradbroke Swim and Fitness Centre

May 19th & 20th saw the 4th Stradbroke Triathlon & Junior Aquathlon weekend taking place. The event attracted entrants from 7-70+ years old and had a superby friendly atmosphere as the whole community got together cheering, supporting, marshalling & racing! We had over 230 Triathletes, from first timers to seasoned competitors completing the Super Sprint distance which comprised of 160m swim, 17km cycle & 3km off road run. 100 children completed the Tri Star Aquathlon (swim & run) in glorious sunshine whilst spectators cheered them on to the finish line in what was an end to a fantastic weekend! One of the chosen charity partners was Suffolk Accident & Rescue Service (SARS) who had athletes taking part to raise funds & also a Swim & Fitness Centre colleague team raising money for the Aplastic Anaemia Trust. Thank you to Spar for providing us with sponsorship for this event, The Cooper family for allowing us to use one of their fields for the run route & Thank you Stradbroke residents for your support! Summer holiday programme Our programme for the summer holiday will be available early July, please pop into the Centre to find out ways to keep your children entertained! Maria Smith

The season is now well underway we are currently playing matches in both the Lowestoft and South Norfolk Leagues. We are hoping to maintain our position in the top division of both leagues. Our last scheduled home game in the South Norfolk League is against Diss Heywood on Thursday 5th July. We have had a number of membership enquiries this year which has resulted in new members joining. There has been no increase in subscriptions this year and with all weather courts play continues all year round. Social play afternoons are on Monday and Thursday from 1.30 until 4.00. With school holidays approaching and family and friends possibly visiting in the summer months why not come and have a game. For further details regarding junior and senior membership just give me a ring on 01379 384557. For non members courts can be hired through Swimming and Fitness Centre at ÂŁ8.00 an hour (ÂŁ4.00 for children). Stradbroke Sports and Community Centre

The gates at the rear of the SSCC leading into the Play Area will shortly be repaired. The Parish Council has agreed to move the gates to sit within the boundary of the Play Area land and take on responsibility for these gates and their maintenance. The Parish Council asked if the SSCC would give £200 towards these costs and we have agreed to do so. The new Projector and Surround Sound have now been installed and we are delighted with the quality. The Stradbroke Cinema experience has certainly been enhanced and when you come to watch a film you will see a big difference. We hope to shortly hold an ‘Open Evening’ when you can come and see for yourselves the improvements we have made to your Community Centre. The Ovo Women’s Cycle Tour was certainly exciting even though the actual cyclists flew through the village in a few seconds! The evening event was attended by over 100 people, many having a great experience with the Simulator Bikes in the Community Centre, the Fressingfield Scouts BBQ (as good as ever with Rolfe’s burgers and sausages), Radio Stradbroke entertaining us with music before the showing of ‘The Jungle Book’ on an enormous outdoor screen. It was disappointing that the Crazy Cycles were unavailable but this didn’t deter us from having a good time. Special thanks to Suffolk Cinema Network and the Big Lottery for arranging the outdoor film show and also thanks to Julie Flatman and everyone at Mid Suffolk District Council for making the evening possible. The Suffolk Show never fails to deliver and this year was another incredible bumper year for the county’s flagship event at Trinity Park. Kicking off a busy schedule, I was pleased to meet with senior representatives from the NFU to talk about the organisations aims and ambitions for British agriculture post-Brexit. Key issues which featured highly on the agenda were trade deals and tariffs, allowing British agriculture to compete effectively with its overseas counterparts, but access to a competent and reliable workforce was highlighted as a key concern with further clarity required around seasonal workforces from the EU and beyond. I regularly meet with our farmers and food producers here in Central Suffolk and North Ipswich and I am looking forward to welcoming a delegation to Westminster later in the autumn of this year. It was a real pleasure to visit the team at Easton and Otley College, who invited me along to talk about their plans and exciting developments at the Otley Campus. The team were bursting with pride and enthusiasm and I am very much looking forward to visiting the Campus again soon to learn more. So much great work goes on at the Suffolk Show to educate our children and young people on the importance of not only eating well – a healthy and balanced diet, but also eating locally and seasonally. The “Farm to Fork” initiative helps to raise awareness of how our food is produced and ultimately reaches our homes; this is so important in not only reducing the number of miles our food travels before it reaches our plates, but also in helping the environment and reducing carbon emissions. The Suffolk Show is the perfect showcase for all that this great county has to offer and it certainly served as a timely reminder of all we have to celebrate ahead of this year’s Suffolk Day. I was delighted to join my fellow Suffolk MPs in championing Suffolk Day once more on 21st June at an event be hosted in Westminster. Driven by BBC Radio Suffolk and the East Anglian Daily Times, the inaugural Suffolk Day in 2017 certainly did everything it set out to do – and more, shouting about all that is great about Suffolk. Somehow I feel that this year’s event was be even bigger and better than before. Every day I represent the people of Central Suffolk and North Ipswich, I am incredibly proud of everything we have to offer here in this great part of Suffolk. I couldn’t think of a better place to live and work and I am certainly very honoured to serve this very special part of the county.
