Look out for notices and our gazebo along Wilby Road, Woodfields or at Westhall. Pop-up ‘Coffee (or Tea) Stops’ will commence (weather and COVID permitting) after the 19th of July between 10am and 12 noon. It would be lovely to meet you. A little something to ponder… ‘God’s Cake’… A daughter is telling her Mother how everything is going wrong in her life. She's failing algebra, her boyfriend broke up with her and her best friend is moving away. Meanwhile, her Mother is baking a cake and asks her daughter if she would like a snack, and the daughter says, "Absolutely Mum, I love your cake." Well then, here, have some cooking oil," her Mother offers. "Yuck !" says her daughter. "How about a couple of raw eggs?" "Gross, Mum!" "Would you like some flour then? Or maybe baking soda?" "Mum, those are all yucky!" To which the mother replies: "Yes, all those things seem bad all by themselves, but when they are all put together in the right way, they make a wonderfully delicious cake! God works the same way. Many times we wonder why He would let us go through some bad and difficult times, but God knows that when He puts these things all in His order, they always work for good! We just have to trust Him and, eventually, they will all make something wonderful! --Author Unknown ....and we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. Romans 8:28

From the Rectory…

Dear friends and neighbours, Moved by what has been going on over the past year, a few of us have been meeting to work out how our Benefice of Churches might best respond to challenges people in our communities are facing right now. We already know that the use of our foodbank has increased, more people are caring for children and relatives with complex needs, and the need for mental health support is rising all the time. Uncertainties around employment following furlough and rent holidays coming to an end will lead to more people struggling to make ends meet. The first step was to look into what was already out there, to stop us doubling up on what others were doing. The village neighbourhood schemes have been wonderful – some were around well before COVID arrived and some have started since, but all are a great resource for local people. There is so much more going on, that we have decided the contribution we can make is to provide information about where help can be found and work alongside people to make sure they get the help they need. Already we have been responding to calls about where people might find help with housing arrears, food, clothing, basic household items and mental health support. We are starting small but hope to offer more as we find out what people most need and where any gaps might be. Every time we need to find assistance for someone, we end up learning more about what is available and make new links with local organisations. In this way, we hope our efforts will be focused where they need to be. If you are interested in getting involved, if you need any kind of help or if you know someone else who does, please get in touch. We won’t have all the answers, but we might be able to work with you to link you up with the help you need. In time we will become more active on Social media but for now you are welcome to call me, Rev’d Gini Williams on 01379 586 414. God bless

STRADBROKE PARISH COUNCIL Next full Parish Council meeting is scheduled for: 12th July 2021 in the Church (or possible alternate date: 19th July) UPDATE The legislation which permitted the Parish Council to meet virtually was not renewed by the Government, therefore from 7th May all meetings must return to being in person. The Councillors reviewed the guidance available and decided that in person meetings were not advisable until after 21st June for more than 6 people from mixed households, therefore meetings have been cancelled until the meeting scheduled for 12th July. The Council has delegated authority to the Clerk, in consultation with Councillors. This will ensure that the business of the Council can continue uninterrupted. As Government restrictions have been extended into July – the Parish Council meeting scheduled for 12th July may have to be moved to 19th July. Please refer to the Parish Council website and notice board for up to date information. The Parish Council business continues under the Scheme of Delegation adopted at the May 2021 meeting. · No major planning applications have been reviewed. · The Clerk will be representing the Parish Council at the hearings for the examination of the Joint Local Plan that has been prepared by Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Council. Once approved, this plan will be used to determine planning applications for the next 20 years. · A meeting was finally able to take place between representatives of the Community Centre and the Parish Council. · A new Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) has been proposed to take over from the current Charity which owns and operates the Community Centre. A proposed constitution for the new CIO has been reviewed and comments were submitted at the Centre’s AGM. · The matter of the ownership of the Tennis Courts will be discussed at the next Committee meeting of the Community Centre. REMINDER TO DOG OWNERS: Dogs are not permitted on the grassed areas at either of the playing fields in Stradbroke – Wilby Road and Westhall. Suffolk Constabulary - Wild water swimming safety advice

Halesworth Officers have recently attended reports of children & teenagers jumping into open water to cool off in the hot weather. Although this has been a summer time activity for generations, it needs to be done in safe places with the land owners’ permission. Some of the incidents reported to Police have been where people have been jumping off bridges into the water beneath, with no regard for what or who might be about to pass underneath. Rivers are also notorious for vegetation just below the surface which can trap swimmers and there’s also the danger of cold water shock; particularly relevant if swimming in flooded quarry pits which can also conceal abandoned plant equipment just beneath the surface. An appeal therefore to children, young people & their parents. If you’re looking to do some ‘wild water swimming’ or allowing your children to do so, please seek the permission of the land owner and swim where it’s safe and where emergency services can access in the event of a 999 call. Simon Green, PC 187, Community Engagement Officer

The Council hasn’t met since the last Stradbroke Monthly newsletterbut we are preparing for our first face to face meeting since the pandemic started which we will hold in July. This is scheduled for 12th July but we may postpone this until 19th July depending on the current government restrictions. This meeting will take place in the Church and you can find more information on the Parish Council website nearer the time.

Whilst the Full Council has not met the business of the Council continues and we have: · Held an online informal meeting with our newly elected County Councillor Peter Gould. We look forward to welcoming him to our July meeting. We discussed roads and traffic concerns at this meeting and look forward to working with Peter to make more progress in this area. Peter is a member of Eye Town Council who have made some progress on some of these issues – for example a 20mph zone in the centre of Eye. · Taken part in the hearings for the new Mid Suffolk local plan in particular stressing the issues around traffic and industrial scale agricultural development. This development plan will impact on planning decisions for decades to come and our Clerk Odile has been attending the hearings to ensure Stradbroke is represented. · Responded to the proposed changes to the constitution of the Community Centre. The Council is supportive in principle of the Community Centre’s plan to convert to a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO), however we have expressed our concern about the proposed changes to representation of sports and community groups. The Council’s view is that the balance between elected trustees and those appointed by sports and local groups should remain as it currently is. We are all very pleased to hear the encouraging news about the Ivy House and wish Emma and Mike (and Poppy, Daisy and Luna!) the best with their new venture at the Ivy House from 1st July!

See also www.somerleyton.co.uk Somerleyton Hall gardens: great rewilding project. We have already spotted gorgeous Stradbroke mini-meadow gardens and allotment walks Also, villagers have daisies, dandelions, pretty grasses etc, flourishing in patches on their lawns. Things we can do: • Dig a wildlife pond (shallow, no fish) /make mini water stations such as half barrels and waterproof containers with irises, miniature lilies etc, for birds, dragonflies. Create a permanent mud patch for house martins to build nests next year. • Ban all garden sprays—they all kill insects, especially bees. Take ladybirds to aphids! • Consider all “pests”, e.g. slugs, as yummy bird, frog and hedgehog fodder. • Aim for all-year-round flowers for bumblebees. Comfrey in spring to common ivy, winter. • Have a mound of bare earth or turf in a flower bed and insect hotels for solitary bees. • Buy a live caterpillar kit with net cage from www.insectlore.co.uk to produce 5 Painted Lady butterflies to set free. Watching them grow is great for kids, too. • Plant a native tree/shrub or two, especially nuts, fruit, berries. • Have old logs dotted around garden or a pile in a corner: insects for birds. • Grow nettles in a large pot/old wheelbarrow and move to sunny spots in the garden. Look for young turned-over tops (butterfly-laid eggs) and holes. Chop off their flowers. • Have a corner/mini meadow or rough grass patch to expand varieties of species: flowers/ bees/butterflies/hoverflies/laceflies/beetles/spiders, etc. • Relax to look at the butterflies, bees and birds you are nurturing safely in your garden. Stradbroke Village Archive FIRE! FIRE!

Stradbroke is rightly proud of its Fire Crew. When the alarm sounds, they immediately respond. SARA searched back to look at old reports and found many within the newspaper archives. This is hardly surprising as most of the buildings were timber framed, thatched and with open fires. So here are three events starting in 1874: A fire broke out at William Girling’s Grocery shop in Church Street. His servant had fallen asleep without extinguishing a candle and the curtains caught alight. Everything in the room was burnt but the house was saved by the prompt action of neighbours in giving help. On this occasion the fire engine was not sent for. It is recorded that the property was partially insured. This was likely to be a regular occurrence and no doubt the warning would have been given again and again about the dangers of not extinguishing a lit candle! We move on to 1880 and a Saturday morning at Thorpe Hall farm: A cry of “FIRE” alerted the inhabitants of the hall as an extensive fire was devastating the stackyard. The produce of the farm, some 212 acres, had been tightly packed into the yard in the form of 19 stacks of various kinds and 4 loaded wagons. The Stradbroke fire engine arrived about 3pm and the men, under the direction of Mr Foulsham (captain), worked hard to hold back the progress of the flames. However, the fire had such a hold that their efforts proved unveiling. The whole of the harvest was reduced to ashes. On this occasion there was little or no wind and as such the house and farm buildings escaped damage. Mr Lines, the farmer, had been celebrating ‘harvest home’ with invited friends when the fire started. The mystery is that all 19 stacks appeared to have ignited simultaneously, or nearly so. Again, the property was said to be partially insured. It’s now 1923 and an old, thatched house in Church Street was completely destroyed by fire. It was the home of Henry and Janet Thirkettle and it was believed to have started from a spark from the neighbouring property. Many neighbours and friends hauled out the furniture and belongings just before the building’s ceilings fell. The Stradbroke fire engine’s hose was quickly attached to a pond across the road. However, a large double adjoining dwelling house along with other neighbouring homes were in danger of catching fire too because of the high winds. The Eye and Harleston Fire Brigades were called to assist but were delayed as the telephone system was down and therefore had to be fetched by road. By the time they arrived the fire was largely mastered although the Stradbroke Brigade and both local men and women continued working on the ashes for several hours. Again, it is mentioned that the property was insured. It's hard to know how many different fire engines there have been in the village but following a 1909 fire in Laxfield it was reported that, “The Stradbroke fire engine was soon on the spot, but as the engine was an old one—dated 1843 —it could not do much, although the firemen were unceasing in their efforts.” (Bottom left) Today Stradbroke has a modern engine and a highly trained volunteer crew who operate out of the fire station in Wilby Road, under the control of Crew Commanders Chris Clarke and Ryan Coe. Ongoing training is every Monday evening and if volunteering for such an important task appeals to you, then you may like to watch out for the call on Stradbroke Fire Brigade’s Facebook Page or go to the suffolk-fireand-rescue-service website which will give you lots of information on the service. Circa 1910 - A group of men studying the attachment of the Fire device to a car. Getting a horse to the engine house and then towing an engine to a fire took time so towing it by car seemed a good idea. When it became detached during it's first journey and ended in a ditch the idea didn't seem as good. This picture (above) records that first attempt. Over 60s

After a horrible year the Over 60s will be meeting on Thursday 1st July from 2pm to 4pm. Looking ahead to the rest of the year our meetings will be on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month at the same time. All new members welcome, we have a variety of activities and outings, why not come along and meet us. Stradbroke Cinema

Our film on July 15th will be 23 Walks. A chance encounter leads to a budding romance between a man and a woman who regularly walk their dogs in the park. A simple plot-line for this late-age romance between Alison Steadman and Dave Johns which is gentle and honest yet has a surprisingly quiet integrity and realism that makes its ending delightful. It is both heartfelt and warm but also has unexpected wit and a frankness revealing the difficulties of new relationships at any age. There will be no Stradbroke Cinema in August and we hope we will be able to welcome our Cinemagoers back to a ‘full house’ in September Doors open at 7pm and the film starts at 7.30pm. Hopefully for the final time we ask you to wear a mask during the performance if you are not drinking or eating a snack from the bar. There will be no interval but the bar will be open from 7pm to 7.30pm Tickets will be on sale from July 1st via the online booking system - £5.50 for adults, £3 for 16s and under. Book early to avoid disappointment! Full details can be found on the Village website that is at www.stradbrokeonline.org.uk Roger Turkington and Jane Merritt

Radio Stradbroke

The decision to cancel 'Stradbroke Music Day', scheduled for Saturday 3rd July, was taken some time ago. With lifting of restrictions delayed by another month, it proved a wise one. The other side of lockdown being extended means that Radio Stradbroke will continue to fulfill its promise to broadcast every day during the pandemic, coinciding with the return to the airwaves of Marty Norris. So it is good news all round. A reminder of how you can listen to the shows: through the website www.radiostradbroke.co.uk , on the TuneIn app on your mobile phone, or by asking your Smart speaker to 'Play Radio Stradbroke'. RoughCast is touring

RoughCast – The Tempest – Touring until July 11th Following their recent popular summer tours of A Midsummer Night's Dream and Twelfth Night, RoughCast return to Shakespeare with a typically fast-moving and energetic production of the most magical of his comedies. Magic, betrayal, love and forgiveness with a healthy dose of comedy thrown in for good measure, make The Tempest one of his best-loved plays. Marooned on a Mediterranean island, Prospero, the one-time Duke of Milan, uses his magical powers to shipwreck his enemies, avenge his wrongs and reclaim his title from his treacherous brother. Not only that, he has to cope with rebellious spirits and drunken servants as well as arrange the marriage of his beloved daughter Miranda. With a production rehearsed and performed in covid-secure conditions RoughCast invites you back to live theatre on a balmy summer evening once more: "Oh brave new world!" Performing at Brockdish Old King’s Head, Wingfield Barns, Thorington Theatre in the Woods, Diss Park, Rushall Common, Laxfield Low House, Bungay Castle, Hoxne Swan and Star Wing Brewery. Sports Roundup

Stradbroke Cricket Club

It is midsummer, yet the weather turns from hot to wet & chilly overnight. It is indeed high season for cricket, so any weather disruption has consequences. Rain robbed us of our first T20 Suffolk Cup match, but we have completed four more league fixtures. Insufficient totals saw defeats by Stowmarket II (easily, despite Michael Hugman batting 38 overs) & Mildenhall V (by 1 wicket in a thrilling finish, Steve Garrod 45, Ian Cattermole 3 for 37), but a good score at Bury St Edmunds IV centred around 43 from Matt Wise & Henry Stephenson 31, led to a win. Finally a defeat at top of the table Earls Colne, despite 37 from James Gilbee. Junior coaching has started. So far Coach Fergus Morgan has seen 43 juniors at 'All Stars', 'Dynamos', & Club training, plus another 250 at five Primary Schools, an indication of reliance on the weather. After 16 months a sense of normality is returning to the Cricket Club. Michael Hugman

Letters to the Editor

The late John F Keeble On behalf of his family I would like to thank friends, family and neighbours for their cards and kind wishes. Donations on behalf of John amounted to £340 which was for Fressingfield and Stradbroke Medical Centre. Special thanks to Dr Morris and staff for his treatment enabling him to stay in his home. Also special thanks to Rev’d Gini for a first class service during awkward times and to Terry at Thirkettles Funeral Service for a personal, caring and respectful service. Hilda Keeble. To all my friends & family who have given me help and support after my 'little' accident. You are all amazing and I and my family have really appreciated your kindness. Tina Abbott AGRO Oh to be a farmers’ boy And drive a tractor ‘cross a field, To feel the land beneath my wheels Compress and harden. Surface sealed. The rain can now lie in deep pools And trickle off onto the roads. No ditch or verge dams waters’ progress Onto road tarmac, gone its wholeness. Oh to be a farmers’ boy To rev the tractor through the streets Down the road past schools and dwellings Trailer bouncing with loud beatsThunder heard within the houses; Night lights through the panes arousesSleepers, who wonder at the squeal of brake, If the speeding ‘Agro’ will the corner make? Oh welcome to you thoughtful Agrarians, Careful custodians of countryside and wild. Conservers and wise crop producers, Who for future generation’s toilUpon the land to feed a growing Nation, Profitably - and without vexationTo other neighbours - who share the Country. Ponder deeply how you source your bounty! Remember, nutritious crop rotation? Deep draining furrows, drawn by driven plough, Helping to breathe life into the soil we use To help aerate and raise its ailing brow? Headlands bees? Birds nesting in the thorn? Few roadsides grooved, or ditches gone! Well-structured land enriched for future farmers To profit them, to feed the mass, and charm us. Rural Rose

A few years ago, working with other Suffolk MPs, I helped lead the successful campaign to gain over £30 million of Government funding for faster broadband for Suffolk. The Better Broadband for Suffolk programme has already made significant inroads into ensuring superfast broadband is available across the county, but there still remains some way to go in achieving 100% coverage. On a regular basis, I still receive letters, emails and phone calls from residents and small businesses owners asking for my help with poor broadband speeds. The need for better and more reliable broadband is important for every business, school and home in our area which is why achieving better broadband for all remains one of my top priorities as your MP. Although there is much to celebrate so far, I remain concerned about the effect that poor or no broadband is having on those areas being left behind, particularly for those residents and businesses in the “not spots” that make up the remaining and final areas yet to benefit from better broadband speeds and reliability. Superfast broadband is no longer a “luxury add-on” service, but for many people, it is now a vital utility in the same way as heating and power. It is essential deliver growth and investment into Suffolk’s local economy, not to mention providing reliable access for young people at school and university. With public services like the health service constantly looking for new and better ways to deliver care to patients, fast and reliable digital connectivity is absolutely essential. The Government has recently pledged to deliver full fibre broadband across the UK and whilst this is welcome news, it is my opinion that much more has to be done to level up the digital divide here in Central Suffolk and North Ipswich. Our local businesses, students, farmers, public services and health settings all depend upon a fast and reliable broadband service – for accessing their customers, studies, service users or patients, but also for making the most of agri-tech equipment relied upon by our local farmers. As we emerge from the pandemic, it is absolutely critical that our local businesses get all the help they need, and better broadband is essential. I am greatly encouraged by the Government’s commitment to deliver better broadband for all and I will continue to do all that I can to ensure that Suffolk remain firmly at the front of the queue. www.drdanielpoulter.com

COVID19 - LIFE IN STRADBROKE PROJECT Add your #backtonormality photos!

The Stradbroke Archive and Record Association (SARA) has set up a new online archive to capture what life is like in lockdown for the residents of Stradbroke. It is hoped that by collecting our social history of this global event in real time, that generations to come will have a real window into our village experience in 2020/21 This new archive is slightly different to the other two online archives, it is designed to allow really easy upload by villagers of their contributions - anyone can add photographs, short videos, memories (as text) and audio recordings from computers, tablets and mobile phones! SARA want to capture the every day types of experiences as well as the special events such as VE Day, Remembrance Day, Christmas Day etc... SARA want the village of now and in the future to see how the global pandemic has changed and affected our day to day life, so join in and add your experiences. Go to
