Stradbroke Baptist Church, Laxfield Road, Stradbroke, Suffolk You would be most welcome to join us this summer: Sundays: Worship Service 10:15-11:15 4th August, 11am - joint service at All Saints Church Thursdays: Prayer Meeting and Bible Study 13:30 at the Chapel Friendship Lunches in July and August – All Welcome! Wednesday 10th and 24th of July at 12:30 Wednesday 14th of August at 12:30 Footprints in the Sand – God’s promise for His children One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the LORD. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand: one belonging to him, and the other to the LORD. When the last scene of his life flashed before him he looked back, at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times of his life. This really bothered him and he questioned the LORD about it: “LORD, you said that once I decided to follow you, you’d walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life there is only one set of footprints. I don’t understand why when I needed you most you would leave me.” The LORD replied: “My son, My precious child, I love you and I would never leave you, During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.” Grace and peace to you all throughout the summer, Bruce Francis 01379 388744 or 07484 219 265 or bruceatsbc@outlook.com

From the new Curate… Please allow me to introduce myself….. It’s been a long and interesting journey which has brought me this far and I am looking forward to continuing it with you all in Stradbroke and the rest of the Sancroft Benefice. I have lived just outside Eye for nearly 12 years so I have some idea of the landscape. I grew up in Framsden and Suffolk is in my veins. After studying nursing in Manchester, I ended up specialising in tuberculosis which took me all over the world, to the poorest countries as well as the poorest places in countries where there was also extraordinary wealth. It felt like my vocation and I was very surprised to be called out of it. My work taught me a lot about suffering and injustice as well as resilience and hope. My husband Felix spent his teenage years in Suffolk although we did not meet until years later in London. We got married in 2001 and we moved back to Suffolk in 2004 We now have two boys, Isaac, 15, and Bryn, 13, who both go to Hartismere High School. My calling to the Anglican Church came like a bolt out of the blue especially as I was a regular at the Vine Baptist Church in Eye. I have spent the last two years doing a two-year Diploma in Theology. It has involved a lot of practical work on Church placements as well as academic study and it has been a wonderfully rich experience. Rural ministry is where I feel called to serve. The first vicar I spoke to in my confusion about my calling was Rev Canon Susan Loxton so it’s wonderful that she has agreed to be my training incumbent. I cannot say I have a preferred worship style as I enjoy the variety that the Church of England embraces from the Book of Common Prayer to Messy Church. The main thing is to help us all to connect more with God and each other in these challenging times. I have learnt a lot so far and I am looking forward to learning a lot more with you all. Love and blessings, Gini Williams

W.I. June 2019 Meeting Of Stradbroke W.I. Gill welcomed the members and a guest to the June meeting and, following the usual offices, our hostesses for the evening, Caroline and Loreli were thanked and birthday posies were presented Of course we sang Jerusalem, this time with a little added zest, as we had a guest speaker with a musical background to impress. Along with his wife, David Webb, one half of the Webb twins who became household names as yellow coats in the wonderful comedy Hi de Hi had come to talk to us about his early years and his time in Hi de Hi so obviously we needed to do our best. The room quickly settled and David took up the microphone to entertain us for the evening. Now at this point I must tell you that I enjoyed the evening so much that I forgot to make notes um, so here we go from memory. David spoke fondly and with great humour about his start in show business and his time as one half of a singing and later acting duo with his twin brother Tony. They served their apprenticeship working their time in clubs and pantomimes and as a popular singing duo, the recordings he played for us were well worth listening to. Eventually they had the chance to join the new show Hi de HI and so their lives changed as they joined a very happy cast and crew to work on a show that they loved. Originally they had hoped to film the series on a Butlins site but Butlins did not want to be associated with this crazy gang of holiday camp workers and so they had to move to an old Warners site instead and the rest is history. David told us little anecdotes about the cast supporting these with photos and film clips about the show and how it took them to stage performances and even the Royal Variety Show at the London Palladium. His affection for the show and its cast was full and genuine and 40 years later they still have reunions. It was a lovely evening of reminiscing and laughter so our thanks to David who now works behind the scenes as does his brother Tony. Moving on to refreshments and chatter and some encouragement to join a new exercise group for the less active among us not keen on sweat and lycra the meeting drew to a close . Our next meeting will be on July 11th when Cassie Healey will talk to us about African Art Murals, all are welcome to join us. Prue Rush

Wingfield and District Gardening Club

At the end of May we visited two lovely gardens in Syleham. The first was large around a restored farmhouse with many beautiful roses just coming into bloom. Raised beds coped with the fruit and vegetables although I was interested that they had difficulty with rhubarb as I have always found it so on my own soil. They had planted many trees over the years which were now well grown and provided an excellent background to the garden with hedges to give protection to the plant. They also had barn owls which conveniently left the next while we were there. The second had amazingly only been in its present state for four years on a hilly site beside a wood. Beautiful beds surrounded the patio giving lots of colour with steps leading up to a wild portion of grass with a path cut around it, leading to a really good selection of shrubs and perennials on its edges around the top of the hill. Again many raised beds growing vegetables and fruit. A beautiful garden which had been achieved so quickly. At the beginning of June we also visited the garden of Natalie Finch in East Bergholt which she created from scratch about 40 years ago, She specialises in roses, old fashioned and many different varieties interspersed with shrubs and delicate poppies. A lovely garden which we viewed on a very wet Saturday but were revived with coffee and delicious scones before making our way home. We meet after out summer break on 26th September to hear a talk on ‘Hanging Baskets throughout the year’ by John Hewson. C Traylen

Stradbroke Village Archive Lance Corporal Donald Burcham Moore. On the 6th June this year the 75th Anniversary of the D-Day landings on the Normandy beaches was remembered. In 1944 so many lives were lost during the invasion but for those that survived the initial landings, there were further battles ahead to bring WW2 to an end. Lance Corporal Donald B Moore served in the Irish Guards and on 7th August 1944 aged 20 he ‘died of his wounds’. Donald was the son of George and Eitheria Moore (nee Hines) who lived at Bank House, Queens Street, together with his three siblings. They received a letter dated 14th September 1944 from their son’s commanding officer – part of which reads: “. . . Your son was in the crew of one of our best Troop leaders and during the difficult times we went through in the early days in Normandy he did his job efficiently and helped to form a really good crew who worked together wonderfully and were always very cheerful. On August 6th we had to attack a little village called Le Busq near Vire and the Troop leader was observing from the turret of the tank, which was a little way back from the forward positions. Suddenly something hit the tank – I think it must have been a very heavy shell – and it was completely destroyed. Somehow your son avoided being killed outright as were the rest of the crew and we had to report him ‘died of his wounds’. I know how awful that sounds but if it is of any consolation to you, I can assure you that he didn’t suffer . . . “ Donald is buried at the Bayeux War Cemetery, in France. His parents requested the inscription “Always Remembered” to be engraved on his headstone. Here, in Stradbroke, he is remembered and honoured on our village War Memorial to make sure that his sacrifice is ‘Always Remembered and Never Forgotten’. This is a good time to increase your strawberry plants. Select runners from the healthiest plants, and use a maximum of three from each plant. Press the plantlet nearest to the main plant on each runner into a 3 inch pot of potting compost using a hairpin shaped piece of wire to keep the runner in place. Cut off the extension runners. Sink the pots into the soil around the plants. All remaining runners on all the plants should be cut off back to the plant. Strawberry plants should be replaced every 3 years. As soon as you’ve finished picking summer fruiting raspberries, cut back all the canes that have borne fruit down to the ground. Tie in this year’s new green canes in their place. White and red currants need pruning after harvest; aim for an airy goblet shape with about eight or ten branches and remove any suckers. Cut back new growth to about five leaves. Gooseberries also need a balanced and open goblet shape. Keep the stem clear to 10 to 15cm by cutting off any new side shoots. Prune the leader back to half of its new growth every year so that the plant makes strong side branches to support the fruit. Runner beans need pinching out when they reach the top of the canes or they will quickly become tangled and topheavy. Protect the white heads of cauliflowers from turning yellow in the sun by pulling outside leaves over them. Ivor Hyde

Council Notes From the Chair... It was great to see the Women's Tour come through Stradbroke again on 10th June . A good crowd gathered to watch despite the weather and others watched without getting wet by following Radio Stradbroke's live video coverage. As the new Council settles down to work we've been allocating jobs to a number of councillors: Dennis Merritt has been appointed Footpath Warden Don Darling and Peter Smith are part of a new Maintenance Working Group Chris Edwards is chairing our new Planning Committee Jeremy Fox is chairing the Finance Committee

At our next meeting we are considering how we could produce a four year strategic plan for this Council. This will build on the work we did after the neighbourhood plan to create a "Parish Infrastructure Improvement Plan" setting out key village priorities, such as a new nursery building. Every Parish Council meeting has a "public forum" near the start and members of the public are welcome to attend and speak in the forum .At our last meeting two local residents raised concerns about the speed and volume of traffic through the village. Roads are the responsibility of the County Council so we raised this issue during the meeting with our County Councillor who is coming back in July with some ideas about measures that could be taken to address this. If you have an issue you think the Council should be addressing or you are just interested to see the council in action, why not come to one of our meetings? Our next meeting is on Monday 8th July, 7.30pm at the Court House. James Hargrave, Chair, Stradbroke Parish Council

From Mid Suffolk District Council The Sporting Memories Foundation has been awarded £93k from the National Lottery to tackle rural isolation and loneliness in Suffolk. The charity will use the funding to develop a network of Sporting Memories groups based in market towns and villages using small community halls and venues. The project is supported by the Most Active County Partnership, Suffolk Community Foundation and Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils, with extra groups targeted in these rural areas, initially around Sudbury, Eye, and Woolpit. The Sporting Memories Foundation is the world’s first charity dedicated to sports reminiscence and physical activities, supporting older people to come together in their communities. The groups are inclusive, social and enjoyable events, embracing people living with dementia, depression and loneliness by engaging them socially and helping to recall memories of watching or playing sport. Open to everyone over the age of 50, Sporting Memories uses sports-based reminiscence resources and develops collections from local groups that rekindle those very special sporting memories and events. Sessions also incorporate appropriate promotion of gentle exercise and physical activity within a fun and relaxed environment. Suffolk is already a thriving county for the organisation with six weekly community-based groups established, 11 care homes delivering sessions in market towns and local hero Terry Butcher (the former England and Ipswich Town defender) a charity patron. The project will link with local facilities and groups to support training, resources, equipment and advice for local delivery of Sporting Memories sessions. The first groups are due to begin in July, starting with local launch events, to be announced shortly. Cllr Julie Flatman, Mid Suffolk District Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “Sporting Memories is a fascinating project that will help bring out stories that might otherwise be forgotten, and bring people of all ages together in the process. Not only will this project improve health and wellbeing, it will also help residents who might otherwise face isolation forge new links and discover new friends through their love of sport.” Sporting Memories would like to hear from individuals, organisations and facility providers who may want to get involved in the project. For further information contact Phil Lown on 07864 614979 or email phil@sportingmemoriesnetwork.com. Mid Suffolk District Council

Stradbroke Cinema Roger and I apologise for the change of film in June. Unfortunately we were not informed that the release date for ‘On the Basis of Sex’ was not until the end of June and hope those of you who came to the Cinema expecting this film were not too disappointed when Mary Queen of Scots was screened! So, on July 18th we will be showing ‘On the Basis of Sex’. A biopic of Ruth Bader Ginsburg - this is a triumph against all odds story. The film follows Ruth as she enters Harvard Law School and ends in the Court of Appeal with her winning the tax case that set her down as one of America’s most important Attorneys. We witness how through this period Ruth had to cope with being patronised and discriminated against at every turn because of her gender, but she is determined to succeed. Her fight against prejudice and injustice is sympathetically played by Felicity Jones. The film is not just about her legal crusade but also tells of an extraordinary marriage with her husband, Marty, that lifts it to new heights. As soon as we have the forthcoming film selection for our Autumn Season, we will email this to you all for you to make your choices. There will be no screening in August, so please check your emails, look out for the posters for the film selected for September 19th and we look forward to seeing you all again then. Doors open at 7pm and the film starts at 7.30pm. The bar is open before the start and during the interval when ice creams will also be on sale. Entrance is £5.50 for adults, £3 for 16s and under and everyone is welcome Full details can be found on the Village website that is at www.stradbrokeonline.org.uk Roger Turkington and Jane Merritt

Sports Roundup

Stradbroke Cricket Club Last month I alluded to the distance traveled to away matches affecting performance, well further proof, if any were needed, as Stradbroke have lost all five away games in League & Cup. To balance that, we are unbeaten at home, having played just two matches. The balance is being redressed, with a run of home games. I get asked when we are playing, apparently people like to watch us! Our next home games are Saturdays 29th June, July 20th, August 3rd & August 17th, Sundays 28th July, & 11th August, all starting at 1pm. Give us a look. You are very welcome. The annual match against the Headmasters XI ended in a heavy defeat this week, played against a backdrop of damaged nets & water butt, the weather vane ripped off the roof, & the scorebox door smashed beyond repair after a weekend of destruction at the Playing Field. If anybody saw anything, please tell the Police, quoting crime number 37/35986/19, even though they don't appear too interested, as once again, the Cricket Club is left to clear up the mess at our own expense. Sincere thanks to those who made remedial repairs or have offered help to do so. Hopefully good will win out over evil. Also, thank you to everyone who voted for our project through 'Calor Gas Community Fund'. Voting is now closed. Fingers crossed! Michael Hugman

Organisations Stradbroke Primary School I can’t believe that I am writing this on the wind down to the end of the academic year. The end of the year has been just as busy as the rest of it! In May, the children in Year 2 and 6 worked so hard to complete their SATs – we are so proud of all of them and know that they all tried their best. Our Year 5 children who did Bikeability tried so hard and are now much more confident at cycling on the road. Year 6 children enjoyed a trip to Crucial Crew in Stowmarket as part of their PSHE curriculum and Saturn and Mars classes have enjoyed trips to Charlotte’s Wood in Wilby for outdoor learning. The end of term has also seen three brilliant performances of ‘Rock Bottom!’, our end of term production performed by the children in Years 4, 5 and 6 this year. On top of this is Sports Day and another fab Summer Fair run by our lovely FOSPS with plenty more events still to come before we break up for the summer holidays! As ever, thank you to our FOSPS for all of the events they have planned this academic year to help raise money for our children; it is so appreciated and the children are so lucky to have the extra opportunities that they help to provide. We are very sad that after many, many years Mrs Deatker and Mrs Rowing are retiring. Their service to the school has been so valuable over the years and we will be sorry to see them leave. We would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their dedication and commitment to the school and wish them both the very best of luck for the future. Enjoy the summer holidays and we look forward to seeing everyone back for our new academic year in September! Hannah Hunt, Head of School

Tidying up the Village Have you noticed how Stradbroke has become untidy and dishevelled in places? Village signs are dirty and on the huh! Litter and doggy bags are appearing on footpaths, fences are broken and so on. The general look and feel of the place is becoming a bit tired. Well, all that is going to change. At the last Parish Council Meeting we agreed to set up a working party for repairs and maintenance of the village assets. I and Peter Smith are the two councillors on the working party and we are inviting residents to volunteer some of their time to help in our campaign to smarten up the village. We are looking for people to join us and help with things such as painting, cleaning, a bit of woodwork, or simply a litter collection. Anything that will improve the look and feel of the place will be considered. It’s not going to be hard work and will definitely be rewarding to see how many small changes can revitalise the village. So give us a call if you would like to help. We would also like residents to get in touch if they know of something that needs fixing, big or small it doesn’t matter. Give us a call and we’ll see what we can do. Don Darling 388098, Peter Smith 384047

Stradbroke Neighbourhood Watch Following last month’s Parish Council meeting it was agreed that a Neighbourhood Watch scheme should be investigated. I am therefore writing to you, as Stradbroke residents, asking you to consider whether or not you would like to have a scheme in our village. You may or may not be aware of the amount of vandalism, drug abuse, antisocial behaviour and criminal activity that goes on within our village, but in the absence of a regular police presence, the above misdemeanours will continue to be a problem causing stress, expense, and in some cases injury to some of our residents. We have one PCSO – Police Community Support Officer, who has a wide area of responsibility from Stowmarket to Halesworth and he is most unlikely to be on hand when a crime is being committed. Whilst the police will always respond to urgent serious crime, they do not have the time or manpower to deal with the misdemeanours described above. One of the most effective ways to reduce this criminal activity is to have a Neighbourhood Watch scheme. It is claimed by many, and backed up by research, that “Neighbourhood Watch is the most successful crime reduction initiative ever” Neighbourhood Watch works by having a broad cross section of residents “watchers” who can keep an eye on their immediate locality and report any activity which they think is suspicious. They report to a local coordinator, of which there may be several, depending on the size of the community. If a coordinator considers it appropriate, they then contact the police and report the activity. Watchers and coordinators are ordinary members of the public who care about their local neighbourhood and who want to make it a better place in which to live. Once established I firmly believe that a local Watch scheme will reduce crime and vandalism and make Stradbroke safer. If you are in any way interested in helping me to set up such a scheme, then please get in touch. Don Darling Tel. 01379388098 Mobile: 07835391766 Email: Caroldon01@gmail.com

Cold water challenge Friends embark on year-long cold water challenge in aid of motor neurone disease Two keen swimmers are braving the elements to take part in 12 gruelling outdoor swimming events to raise vital funds for a charity close to their hearts. Emily Kell, 31, and Laura-Mai Edwards, 32, are taking part in one event each month over the course of a year to raise money for the motor neurone disease (MND) Association. The money raised will be used to help individuals and families affected by the disease, and to further support research and treatments into MND. The duo were inspired to take on the challenge after Emily’s dad, Richard Kell, was diagnosed with MND in August 2017 shortly after retiring as a Halesworth GP. MND is a rapidly progressive disease that affects the nervous system and impacts on people’s abilities to walk, communicate, swallow and breathe. There is still no cure for the disease, with average life expectancy ranging from six months to five years from the onset of symptoms. Emily, who has been a keen swimmer for many years, said: “The MND Association is incredibly important to our family, and we are both driven to support others facing this cruel disease. When we were growing up, Dad was always the first to jump into a cold lake, pool or the sea. We always thought he was mad. As he isn’t able to swim anymore, I wanted to try to be as brave as him by undertaking this challenge.” The pair have already taken part in 10 swimming events, raising £5,000 so far. They have three swims left and are hoping to hit their £8,000 target by the end of August. Laura, whose parents live near Walberswick beach, said “we both love swimming, but are not familiar with swimming in freezing temperatures! We had to spend a lot of time preparing for the winter swims, including having daily cold showers and researching cold water immersion techniques.” Anyone who would like to sponsor Emily and Laura can visit: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/swimformnd For more information about the MND Association, visit https://www.mndassociation.org/ Emily Kell

In recent weeks, it’s fair to say that public concern about climate change continues to grow and regardless of the merits, or otherwise, of school strikes and mass city protests, the voices being raised reflect the growing concern and sense of urgency for the need to tackle this critical issue. Since I was first elected in 2010, I have consistently worked to raise issues around climate change, serving as Vice Chair of the Energy and Climate Change Select Committee, until it was reconfigured in 2017. With the heightened public call for Government to do more in tackling climate change, I would hope that my own track record speaks for itself on this matter. I remain committed to raising issues relevant to climate change with Government and in the House of Commons and Westminster Hall Chambers. I have contributed to a number of debates on related issues over the least year or so alone, including the diesel vehicle scrappage scheme and the electric and hybrid market, Dieter Helm’s Energy Review, looking at reducing carbon footprint and producing cleaner, greener energy, and debates on geothermal energy and regulation of heat networks. I have also consistently submitted Parliamentary Questions on this vitally important topic. In recognising the need to rise to the challenge of tackling climate change, it is also important to take stock and recognise our achievements so far. The UK leads the G7 in terms of reducing our carbon emissions – we have cut our emissions per unit of national income on average by 3.7% per year, well ahead of the EU average of 2.3% and the G7 average of 2.2%. The last time the UK’s emissions were this low was in 1888. Our achievements in cutting emissions from our electricity generation particularly stand out. More than half of the UK’s electricity was generated from low-carbon sources last year, the highest ever share, while we achieved a record 90 hours of continuous coal-free generation over the recent Easter weekend. Our renewable energy capacity has quadrupled since 2010 and the UK has the largest installed offshore wind capacity in the world thanks to our sustained investment in this crucial technology. Whilst these are undoubtedly great achievements, there remains much to be done and we have already signalled that we want to be more ambitious, both in our actions and in driving concerted global efforts. Climate change is too broad a challenge for this Government to tackle alone - it is a global problem to which the solution will be a global commitment. It is a matter of supreme importance and one on which I will continue to take every opportunity to make the case and press for action.
