Too Slow? How reliable is your Broadband? Have you been frustrated by the Broadband Service in Stradbroke recently? Are you trying to work and learn from home and found the connection too slow and unreliable? I am leading a Broadband Working Group that is looking into ways to get affordable, faster and more reliable broadband into Stradbroke. This work is in its early stages but we have some encouraging options on the horizon! We are launching a survey that can be found at https://stradbrokepc.org and it would be really helpful if as many people as possible could fill it in to help demonstrate the demand for more reliable and faster broadband in Stradbroke. COVID19 - LIFE IN STRADBROKE PROJECT

The Stradbroke Archive and Record Association (SARA) has set up a new online archive to capture what life is like in lockdown for the residents of Stradbroke. It is hoped that by collecting our social history of this global event in real time, that generations to come will have a real window into our village experience in 2020. This new archive is slightly different to the other two online archives, it is designed to allow really easy upload by villagers of their contributions - anyone can add photographs, short videos, memories (as text) and audio recordings from computers, tablets and mobile phones! SARA want to capture the every day types of experiences as well as the special events such as VE Day. So that walk in the fields, the food deliveries, learning to video conference and facetime, working from home, or not working from home! SARA want to know are you managing with social distancing? What have you learnt to cook? Share your recipes! Who has been helping and who is being helped? How are you keeping in touch with friends and family? Are your school aged children adapting to online learning? Lets see the work they are proud of! And of course... please upload your rainbows! SARA want the village of now and in the future to see how the global pandemic has changed and affected our day to day life, so join in and add your experiences. Go to

From the Rectory…

Dear friends and neighbours To open or not to open – that is the question we have been grappling with recently. I am, of course, talking about our churches. Now we are allowed to have services in church but, of course, there was much to consider and put into place to keep people safe. We feel this was good last month, so welcome everyone to join us this month. I know that church isn’t important for everyone but the delights of having services online is that we get to see lots of people, and it is good to see familiar faces. All of us have difficult decisions to make. It is difficult sometimes to decide how to make up our mind about something, but this is my strategy: talk it over with God, talk to others, then back to God to tell him my thoughts and plans. I make my decision when it seems good to me and the Holy Spirit – the part of God who lives in us by faith. I know I am on the right track when I feel God’s peace inside of me! Try it! I mentioned how good it is to see a familiar face, and talking to some people being able to see their family online with a video call or a zoom quiz night is bringing much joy and even bringing some families closer together. If you cannot do any of this, I do hope you are at least seeing people at a distance to talk to. If you are feeling lonely and would like to talk to someone, please get in touch. There are people in our villages who would be happy to phone you for a chat. A blessing: May the peace of the Lord Christ go with you, wherever he may send you. May he guide you through the wilderness, protect you from the storm. May he bring you home rejoicing at the wonders he has shown you. May he bring you home rejoicing once again into our doors. in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen. God bless, Susan

The Chair writes..

Since my last article five councillors Don Darling, Stuart Gemmill, Dennis Merritt, Peter Smith & Pam Cane have resigned from the Council. I would like to thank them for their work on the Council. We have six vacancies for councillors and this creates an opportunity for new people to join the Council and contribute to its work. If an election is not called to fill the vacancies we will look to co-opt new councillors in the coming months. More information will be posted on the Parish Council website at https://stradbrokepc.org

As the lockdown period eases the Council has started to step up its work and we have two projects in particular we are working on: Transport Councillor Jeremy Fox is leading a new Transport Working Group that is looking for volunteers to join a speed and lorry watch team. You can see more information in his article on the front page. This is an important topic for many villagers who have already contacted us to look into how traffic is managed in the village. Broadband I am leading a Broadband Working Group that is looking into ways to get faster and more reliable broadband into the village at an affordable cost. This work is in its early stages and we are just launching a survey to gauge need and understand the issues facing residents. All information on the front page, A number of members of the public have joined our meetings online recently and our next meeting takes place on Monday 14th September at 7.30pm. Stradbroke Primary School news

We are looking forward to welcoming back our pupils in September after the COVID partial closures. We were proud to offer a base "The Haven" throughout the school closures for Key Worker children at our partner school All Saints, Laxfield. The school, like everyone else, has had an unusual year and we must take this opportunity to thank staff and parents who have worked together during lockdown to ensure that our pupils had continuous educational provision. Our teaching assistant Mrs McKenna has been working hard over the Summer Term and you may have spotted her in the front playground painting windows, creosoting fences and pressure washing the playground! She has also been training as a forest school leader and we are looking forward to her developing a forest school area with the children on our field. We are aiming to use our outdoor spaces fully this Autumn, both as a good way to enjoy outdoors, observe social distancing and to maintain good mental health as we go into the Winter months. We are very fortunate to have such beautiful grounds and outdoor spaces. We welcome many new families both with children to our Reception class and those families who are moving into the area. Stradbroke seems to be attracting a high number of new pupils for the Autumn and we welcome them all warmly. The Autumn Term will be different this year too with usual visits such as the Pantomime at Norwich Theatre Royal postponed- but we will strive to ensure that it is still an exciting one. We are very much looking forward to welcoming back all of our families and pupils for a busy and productive term. Melanie Barrow, Executive Head- Stradbroke Primary, CEO- All Saints Schools Trust

Stradbroke High School

Firstly, we would like to say a big thank you to our students and parents for their hard work and support, and our community for their continued support, during the final months of the school year; you have been amazing. We hope you have had a good summer and we are now looking forward to us all working together again as we start the new year. Secondly, we would like to invite you to apply to join the Local Governing Body of Stradbroke High School. Thinking it’s not for you? Can I just ask that you read on before you decide? The LGB works closely with both the school and the Trust, setting the vision for the school and ensuring that it works efficiently and effectively towards achieving that vision. We do this by building a thorough knowledge of the school and its community, by both supporting and constructively challenging the school, and by ensuring accountability and compliance. Our focus is on the progress and outcomes of the pupils and ensuring that the school promotes the highest of standards and aspirations. To do this well, we need members of our community who care about our young people and who want to be involved in making a difference to their years at high school. Anyone over the age of 18 can apply to be a governor and, while those who no longer work, can bring the skills and experiences of a lifetime to the LGB, the younger members of our community can bring vital skills and an insight into the challenges our young people face. If you would like more information, please go to the governance section of www.stradbrokehigh.co.uk or contact me via the school office or by email to governors@shs.set.education Thank you. Karen Lynch, Chair of Governors

Friends of All Saints Church

Following a meeting with the Parochial Church Council in August it was agreed that FOASS would use the current funds held in our account - £50,765.30 – to rebuild the bulging and loose sections of the Clerestory wall and align at least two pairs of Clerestory windows, as indicated in the last Quinquennial Inspection. This project will be organised by the PCC with FOASS paying the invoices for the work. FOASS will also continue to contribute £1,000 towards the annual Insurance for the Church. On the completion of the above project any monies still left in the FOASS account will be wholly transferred into the PCC Fabric Account for any essential repairs until this money is exhausted. When this point has been reached, which may not be for another 18 months, it has been decided to close FOASS. We were formed in 1999, and over £107.000 has been raised through events and generous donations. The PCC were able to increase this amount by Grant Aid, and our major project being the roofing of the centre aisle. FOASS may close but the Church Fabric will still need funds; it has been suggested, if it is your wish, that Members continue to pay their annual membership fee direct to the PCC Fabric Fund. With my ever grateful thanks, on behalf of FOASS, to all the generous donors, trustees, committee members, members past and present for their support over the years. Margaret Streeter (Chairman )

Stradbroke Village Archive

Victory in Japan Day The Fifteenth of August 1945 was the end of WW2 marked by VJ Day. SARA remembers the four young men who fought in the Far East but didn’t return home. They are remembered with honour on the village memorial. The Village Archive This month SARA has looked at the audio and video archive. During the first 10 years of the SLHG, Gordon Nunn and Mike Readman sat with village elders and talked over the past. These conversations were recorded for posterity and make interesting listening today. The recordings were done on cassette tape and can be scratchy but none the less their content takes us to a different time and way of life. Hear more about the secret army from Ivan Mower, a young lad who secretly joined a group of men in Stradbroke to cause mayhem if we were ever invaded during WW2. Hear John Ruffles, the son of the village policeman, who came down to breakfast one morning to find German Airman in the cells. The archive has also been given access to video recordings from the nineteen sixties onwards. Past village fairs, jubilees, TV programs, sport, music and the wonderful summer event of Navy Day may be viewed. See the church turned into a ship for one day and flagged “England expects every man to do his duty”. All of this was captured on film. Although many of these files have been available, scattered throughout the archive website, we decided to bring them all together as a new Exhibit. Making both the audio and video files available to everyone has required their format to become digital. This has taken a long while and at times a lot of head scratching. There are more and we will add them to the website as we can. Other news this summer: We have added to the Stradbroke Village Archive an interesting article written by Stradbroke Primary school student Nuala about Stradbroke Witches and also a link to further reading on the same subject from her mum Helen. We have added a letter written by Revd. Florence, a leaflet published in 1994 of Stradbroke walks and a photograph of The village cricket team circa. 2000. https://www.stradbrokearchive.org.uk/exhibits/show/audioandvisual/audio--visual SARA, Ann Readman.

Radio Stradbroke

It is almost inconceivable that Radio Stradbroke has now broadcast 'live' daily for 23 weeks, since lockdown started. As normality returns, it is getting harder to maintain this, but the support we get keeps us going. Recently we joined forces with David Hoffman, who broadcasts a daily breakfast show, prior to our own 'Home Service'. We link the streams, so you can listen on both www.radiostradbroke.co.uk or harlestonbreakfast.co.uk . Listening figures have increased as a result. Monday 31st being a Bank Holiday, means that Marty Norris will be broadcasting 'live from his drive' between 4pm & 6pm, taking your requests & dedications via studio@radiostradbroke.co.uk . Thank you for your support. Michael Hugman

Letters To The Editors

With regret I would like people in the village to know of the sad loss of my dad - David Haine - who lost his battle with Coronavirus. Mum (Olive) and dad moved from Aldeburgh to Woodfields in 2012 and could often be seen walking around the village. Dad was taller than mum and would walk a few steps in front of her. They also liked to sit on the bench at the end of Woodfields and would chat to lots of people. They moved to Hartismere Place in Eye last July and mum continued to follow dad around. Mum has dementia but remains well and I would like to thank all the staff at the care home for their patience and hard work. Wendy Cook (and Steve who lost his grandad) Beryl and family would like to say thank you to all those that sent cards, flowers and letters following the sudden and sad passing of David Henry Johnson in April, it was a great comfort. Please note we will when we can, be holding a memorial service to celebrate his life, a date to be fixed and advised. Many thanks, Cathe Johnson I would like to say a huge Thank You to Isabel Dunn who kept our Post Office/Library open during this pandemic whilst Maureen was isolating, you were a life saver! Jane Johnson We offer sincere apologies to those residents who supported us with our election on to Stradbroke Parish Council. We wish to thank you for your past support, but have to advise that with regret, we have now tendered our joint resignation from the Parish Council. We feel that we will better serve the community from the outside of the council and that we had no option but to take this course of action. A copy of our full resignation letter can be viewed on the Stradbroke Online Website (stradbrokeonline.org.uk). Don Darling, Stuart Gemmill, Dennis Merritt, Peter Smith, Pam Cane My Witch Project My name is Nuala Duffy and I go to the primary school in the village. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19, the school was closed to my year group, and others, so I was home schooled by my mum. As part of my history lessons, I did a local history project about witches. This included learning about a woman from Stradbroke who was executed for being a witch in 1599 (although she wasn’t!), studying the witch trials of the 1600s in East Anglia, led by the witch finder general Matthew Hopkins, and looking at anti-witch marks in buildings in Stradbroke. I went on to the Historic England website and identified all the buildings in the parish of Stradbroke that existed in the 16th and 17th centuries when people believed in witches. I then wrote to the occupiers of these buildings to ask if they had any anti-witch marks in their homes. To protect their houses against witches, people drew, wrote or burned protective marks. These could be patterns, rune like letters, burn marks or even scratches located around fireplaces, door frames, ceilings and other places. So many people replied sending me photos of various types of marks and other protective items and some even, very kindly, invited us into their homes (socially distanced of course) to see, identify and photograph marks. Although living in listed properties some people didn’t have any visible marks but were kind enough to tell me this. I have learnt about the difference between anti-witch and carpenter’s marks, how timber framed buildings were constructed and that many innocent people were murdered by Matthew Hopkins and his associates. As part of this project I got to meet lots of different people who I never knew before. I want to say a huge thank you to all the people in Stradbroke who have helped me. Stradbroke Cinema is back! Having deep cleaned the Community Centre and consulted with Moviola on Covid 19 guidelines we are now able to open again. Things will be a little different though – our numbers will be limited to between 30 and 40 to begin with to accommodate social distancing. You may have to wear a mask during the performance if you are not drinking or eating a snack from the bar. There will be no interval for ice-creams, but the bar will be open from 7pm to 7.30pm There is a big change in payment for your viewing and drinks. We are moving to a cashless payment system like many other shops and service providers now. If you are unable to use a credit or debit card then we will still take cash but are obviously trying to minimize risk and extra work for our volunteers. We would prefer to know numbers beforehand so we don't have to turn people away. If you are able to let us know either by emailing Stradbrokecentre@gmail.com or phoning Jane on 01379 388 382, this would be helpful as we need to have a contact email or number should Track and Trace be necessary On September 17th our opening film is The Personal History of David Copperfield. A fresh, funny and utterly charming spin on the Dickens’ classic. A vivacious adaptation extracting the brilliance of the author’s style and humour and abandoning the melodrama. Dev Patel gives a gorgeous performance as David and we are all swept away by the energy, the fun and the warmth of the story. No better film to shrug off the gloom of the lockdown. Doors open at 7pm and the film starts at 7.30pm. Entrance is £5.50 for adults, £3 for 16s and under. Full details can be found on the Village website at www.stradbrokeonline.org.uk Roger Turkington and Jane Merritt

White Hart Bowls Club

We have decided to postpone our Bingo Evenings for the remainder of 2020. We cannot see how we can safely organise these events using the current guidelines so it is with regret we have decided to cancel our dates for September, October and November. Many of our members are in the vulnerable category, as well as our supporters, and we would not wish to put anyone at risk, especially as we don't know what will happen in the Winter months. We hope that things will improve and eventually we will be able to meet up again. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in our fund raising events and trust that we will all stay safe and well during the months ahead. I would especially like to send a get well message to Susan Ayton, one of our regular helpers who is at home recovering from an operation at present. Our thanks to all our supporters, we hope to see you again in the Spring. Kind regards, Julie Ward, Secretary White Hart Bowls Club.

Sports Roundup

Stradbroke Cricket Club

Cricket is back! After 321 barren days, cricket whites were finally spotted again on the Playing Field. I won't bore you with all the Covid protocols necessary before, during, & after a match, but like most things in life/sport, repetition becomes habit. With no League cricket, the Club is playing a series of friendly matches, mainly against Clubs we do not play regularly. So far, three games, three draws, but the important thing is that we are playing the game we love. The one thing that has struck me most, during, & since lockdown, is a genuine interest in what we are doing. I have passed many people in the street who have stopped to ask, how is the Club, are we playing matches, what time does it start? Thank you to everyone in the Village who has given us a thought, or even come along to watch some play. It means a lot that these simple pleasures are helping the order of the Universe to re-establish. Ironically, we do not have another home match until September 20th (Presidents Match), but Stradbroke feels like a Cricket Club again, instead of a prisoner. Michael Hugman

Stradbroke Table Tennis Club

Dear club members, I hope you are all safe and well, and your Families are as well. We shall be starting again on the 9th of September pending no more problems. There are a few conditions we must adhere to, but these I will explain when we start. Please bring your own bat, if you have one, or we will loan you one, but they will need to be cleaned before and after use. We are a small club so there should not be a problem with our style of play, l welcome young and old new players or old pros. The start time is again 7.30 pm and hope to see you all there. More information can be obtained from Tony on 01379 384713. Many thanks and stay SAFE. Tony Potts

Pear Tree Fund Has New Patron

A life peer with a wealth of experience of chairing NHS trusts and health authorities has been appointed as patron of the Pear Tree Fund. Elaine Murphy, Baroness Murphy of Aldgate, will take up her position immediately with the charity, which runs the Pear Tree Centre in Halesworth while also providing additional nursing care, equipment and support to people registered with Cutlers Hill Surgery who are nearing the end of their lives. Formerly Foundation Professor of Old Age Psychiatry at the University of London, Baroness Murphy has been a politically independent life peer since 2004. She was formerly the Chief Medical Officer’s personal advisor in her field and a UK advisor on mental health to the World Health Organisation. Baroness Murphy takes a special interest in mental health and social care in the House of Lords and is also a vice-president of the Alzheimer’s Society. The Pear Tree Centre opened earlier this year following an extensive fundraising drive. It provides information and support to anyone with a life-limiting illness who lives within a 15-mile radius of Halesworth, as well as their families and friends. Dr Kevin Maclusky, chairman of the Pear Tree Fund, said: “We are absolutely delighted to welcome Baroness Murphy of Aldgate to the charity as our new patron. She has extensive experience within the NHS and is renowned in the psychiatry field. We are honoured that she has chosen to support our charity in this way.” For more information on the Pear Tree Fund or to support the charity, visit www.peartreefund.org Liz Hearnshaw, Zenith Public Relations Ltd

Sculpture Installed in Garden

A Suffolk sculptor has paid tribute to a friend and former neighbour by donating a striking piece of artwork to the Pear Tree Centre in his memory. Brian Alabaster has given the piece – called Charlotte – to the Pear Tree Fund, with the charity installing it as the centrepiece of Richard’s Garden, at the centre next to Cutlers Hill Surgery in Halesworth. The garden has been named after Richard Kell, who was a well-known local GP and chair of Halesworth Community Nursing Care Fund, the Pear Tree Fund’s predecessor, for 18 years before retiring from the role in 2017. Richard died in July 2019 of motor neurone disease at the age of 64. “Richard was our friend, family doctor and neighbour for 25 years,” said Brian, who lives in Linstead. “We were devastated when he told us of his diagnosis and felt it was a cruel twist that someone who had dedicated his life to helping others should be dealt such a hand. It is difficult to express how much he meant to all our family. He was a truly extraordinary man. We are grateful to be given the opportunity to donate one of my sculptures to the garden dedicated to Richard and spent time choosing an appropriate piece with his wife Barbara. The sculpture of Charlotte sitting with a book in hand was the first one my wife Frannie and I thought of for this setting. We think she radiates a calm reflective and contemplative quality. We hope that visitors will enjoy seeing her sitting under the pear tree that gives the centre its name and that she will add to the lovely garden in memory of Richard.” The Pear Tree Centre opened earlier this year following an extensive fundraising drive. It offers a wide variety of services to people with life-limiting illnesses and their families, including help understanding a diagnosis, counselling, financial and benefits advice and bereavement support. The centre has temporarily been shut since March as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, but is due to reopen in August. Barbara Kell, Pear Tree Fund trustee and a founder member of the charity, said: “My family and I are so grateful to Brian for donating this wonderful gift of the statue in memory of Richard for the Pear Tree Centre garden. It enhances the environment so beautifully and creates a lovely ambient space. We are also grateful to Ed Flaxman and his team at Studio 31 for designing such a lovely garden for us.” To find out more about the centre, make a donation or find out how you could support the charity in other ways, visit www.peartreefund.org Liz Hearnshaw, Zenith Public Relations

The decision about building Sizewell C in Suffolk is rapidly approaching. The French-owned power company EDF have decided to continue with their application for a Development Consent Order which is now out for public consultation. If built, we shall be living with the construction phase of Sizewell C for over 10 years, so, I felt it important to set out my thoughts about whether Sizewell C is a good thing for Suffolk. In the absence of an alternative, and until we can find better ways of storing the electricity produced by renewable sources such as offshore wind and solar energy, nuclear power will remain an important form of UK electricity production. At a time when all are striving to be more environmentally conscious and the Government has committed to meet climate change and carbon reduction targets, nuclear energy has the advantage of being carbon neutral and helps to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. I am also mindful that the construction of Sizewell C will bring job opportunities at a time (post COVID-19) that may prove to be economically challenging. The Suffolk coast leads the way in creating jobs in the renewable energy sector and the construction of Sizewell C will undoubtedly provide future job opportunities for our children and grandchildren. Considering the environmental positives of nuclear energy and the local jobs boost to Suffolk, I still have serious reservations about the proposals for Sizewell C. I am concerned about the potential damage to our beautiful Suffolk coastline, and the impact that this will have upon its rare species and habitats. I believe this environmental damage is not sufficiently mitigated by EDF’s current construction plans. I am also concerned that EDF have done little to reduce the impact that construction traffic will have upon East Suffolk's communities. EDF’s decision to move from sea to land-based delivery of supplies has not been adequately considered. There will be a need for substantial road and rail improvements to support this change in the construction plan and I am therefore concerned that EDF has not listened to Suffolk's parishes and communities’ views. The East Suffolk train line and the A12 are vital transport routes for those who live and work in central and eastern Suffolk. The A12 is also an important access route for tourists who spend millions of pounds in our area. Tourism brings huge economic benefits to our county and visitors must be able to reach Suffolk without encountering delays and congestion caused by construction traffic. Finally, I have concerns about the potential security implications of Chinese financial involvement in such a major energy project, for which I have not yet received adequate assurances. Having considered the matter carefully, on balance, I am unable to support the current proposals for Sizewell C. I will continue to monitor developments very carefully, and as always, shall stand up for the best interests of the residents I represent in Central Suffolk and North Ipswich. www.drdanielpoulter.com
