Director’s Note
It’s 2003 and I’m chaperoning a field trip to NYC in the dead of winter with a group of HS students eager to see and experience Broadway Shows. After a fun but slightly disappointing production of Thoroughly Modern Millie (Sutton Foster was out with bronchitis), my friend who had organized the trip said we were going to a show called Urinetown. I had never heard of it. We walked into the theatre lobby, through a dark and cramped hallway which then opened out into a set full of metal platforms and dingy scenery. I honestly didn’t know what to think. When the house lights dimmed, a man in a prison suit and chains was led across the tallest platform down onto the stage area and into a fenced in section. He sat down at a keyboard and played that fabulous opening phrase. I immediately thought – I am going to love everything about this And I did This brilliantly written satire with an incredible score inspired me so much that it took me 21 years to finally muster up the courage to direct it I grew up drawn to the classic and somewhat offbeat humor of I Love Lucy, Carol Burnett, and Monty Python, and I would watch them over and over trying to figure out what made shows like them so funny. I knew it was making a big impact on me, I just didn’t know why. Now I do. Comedy has always been very important to me because I believe that laughter is connective and healing. When I was younger, I longed to feel like part of a close-knit group and needed a place to forget some hurts. Now that I’m an adult, it is even more crucial for me to have those things In sharing moments of laughter, I find comfort and community It’s one of the reasons TSC was founded It’s why I have loved every minute of the Urinetown journey This cast, this production team, they are some of the most stellar people you will ever meet. From day one, we shared laughter, and I knew it was going to be a great show. My challenge to you is that at some point during the show, take a moment to recognize how you are feeling as you share laughter with those around you. I hope it brings you whatever you need.
Enjoy the show!
