TERROR IN SPAIN: 13 DEAD, 4 ‘PINOYS’ HURT By John Paolo Bencito and Sara Susanne Fabunan THE Philippines has joined the international community in condemning the terrorist attack in Barcelona on Thursday which left at least 13 people dead and injured more than 100 others. “Our hearts and prayers go out to the families and loved ones of the innocent victims who perished and those who got injured,” Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said in a statement.

My boy was not into drugs —Kian’s pa By Jun David THE father of the 17-year-old Grade 11 student killed in a police operation in Caloocan said Friday that his son was not involved in drugs, and that he was the victim of official abuse and misconduct. Saldy delos Santos, father of victim Kian Lloyd, accused the police of unjustly killing his son after footage from the barangay CCTV showed two men, not in uniform, dragging the teenager to where he was found dead. In a later scene, the boy was seen slumped on the ground, face down. In his left hand was a gun—but Kian Loyd was righthanded, Delos Santos said. The boy also had a bullet wound on the back of his leg. The CCTV footage and neighbors belied police claims that the boy fired at them first. Next page

He added: “We are one with the peaceloving people of the international community in condemning this latest attack in Spain. At the same time, Malacanang advised Filipinos in Barcelona to remain vigilant and mindful of their surroundings, after four Irish citizens of Filipino descent were among those reportedly injured after a van plowed through pedestrians in Barcelona’s Las Ramblas tourist destination. Drug killings spark outrage

Faeldon part of action plan —Palace By John Paolo Bencito and Rey E. Requejo DESPITE mounting calls for his resignation over his failure to stop the entry of a shipment of shabu worth P6.4 billion, Customs Commissioner Nicanor Faeldon is staying in his post as part of President Rodrigo Duterte’s plan for the corruption-ridden agency, Malacañang said Friday. “So far as we can see, he has retained Faeldon,” said Presidential Spokesman Ernesto Abella. “So I suppose that’s part of his concrete action.” Abella said the President needs men of integrity to do their job. AWMAKERS condemned the mass killing of drug suspects from poor neighborhoods in Bulacan, Manila and Caloocan, as the casualty count in four days of anti-drug operations hit 80 dead—including a 17-year-old Grade 11 student. “We condemn this act of madness... If the accused comes from [the] poor...the result is consistently gruesome,” said Anakpawis Rep. Ariel Casilao, who likened the killings to those done under martial law. Magdalo Party-list Rep. Gary Alejano expressed concern that the killings, especially of drugrelated suspects, has become a national policy. “I call on the Filipino people to denounce this inhumane policy of killing as much as we denounce illegal drugs and corruption in government,” Alejano, a staunch critic of the Duterte administration, said. Alejano said due process must be observed at all times. “Let us not allow ourselves to get accustomed to and grow numb to the killings that are happening in our country,” he said in Filipino. Casilao, a member of the leftist Makabayan bloc, said the P900million budget for Oplan Double Barrel Reloaded would result in even more deaths. “The war on drugs is not even a war, as victims are helpless, like the case of the Grade 11 student killed in Caloocan,” he said. “We demand justice for him and all the victims, and call on various sectors to unite as this exhibition of atrocity should have no place in a supposedly democratic and free society.” In Caloocan, 17-year-old student Kian Loyd delos Santos was killed by police who said he fired on them. Delos Santos’ father, however, said neither he nor his son were involved in drugs, and CCTV footage showed policemen dragging the boy to the place Next page
