Pinoy actors win in New York

Indie actors Ronwaldo Martin and Hasmine Killip in the award winning film "Pamilya Ordinaryo"

HASMINE Killip and Ronwaldo Martin bagged the Best Actress and Best Actor awards, respectively, for their roles as a teenage couple in Pamilya Ordinaryo (Ordinary People) at 2017 Harlem International Film Festival in New York. The festival ran from May 4 to 7. In the film, Killip plays Jane, a 16-year-old mother, while Martin is her equally young partner Aries. Jane and Aries barely make both ends meet as they are living in the streets while raising their newborn baby. The young couple’s problems worsen when their infant was stolen. The award is Killip’s sixth acting recognition for Eduardo Roy Jr.’s film. The others are Best Actress at Asia Pacific Screen Awards, Hanoi International Film Festival, Fantasporto-Oporto International Film Festival and 12th Cinemalaya Film Festival, and a Special Jury for Performance citation at the London East Asia Film Festival. This is the first acting award for Martin, brother of actor Coco Martin. Harlem International Film Festival showcases features, documentaries, shorts, animation, youth projects, episodic works and cutting edge music videos. Conceived from the belief that people have unique experiences and perspectives to share, the film festival celebrates the art of cinema by constantly seeking and screening fresh works.
