HOUSE COMMITT

TO BACKING NEW DEFENSE POLICY

THE House of Representatives is committed to support the Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Concept of the administration amid increasingly aggressive actions by China in the West Philippine Sea, Speaker Martin Romualdez said.

“The House of Representatives stands firmly behind President Marcos’ vision for a comprehensive archipelagic defense strategy. This is not merely a matter of policy but a solemn duty to uphold the integrity of our nation and the rights of our people,” Romualdez said on Saturday.

STABLE SCS A WORLD ISSUE

PBBM TO CHINA GENERAL: STABLE SCS A WORLD ISSUE

IDENTIFIES SEVEN THREATS TO ASIA-PACIFIC REGION

PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos said the freedom of navigation in the South China Sea is a world issue, rebuffing a Chinese general who raised concerns over the actions of the Philippines that the military official claimed ran counter to regional efforts to keep the area peaceful and stable.

“When we talk about the South China Sea, we have to also remember that the South China Sea is the passageway for half of the world trade and therefore the peace and stability of the South China Sea,” the President said in response to the question of Chinese Major General Xu Hui during the 21st IISS Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore late Friday evening.

“The freedom of navigation in the South China Sea is a world issue. We must include all parties in this discussion because now. It is not just ASEAN member states who are stakeholders –it is the entire world that has become stakeholders in the peace and stability of our region,” he added.

The Chinese general, who did not introduce himself when he asked the first question after Mr. Marcos delivered his keynote speech, said: “In the eyes of the international community, some of Philippines’ behavior in recent days, recent times...there is a risk of ruining the regional long-term, long-

lasting peace.”

“I cannot imagine what you must be referring to – if the reference or the allusion is to the Philippines somehow tearing apart what we have agreed on in terms of ASEAN Centrality – quite the contrary,” the President said.

“I think if you examine more closely the remarks that I have just made, I precisely focused on ASEAN Centrality, and that the principles that are laid down, that are involved in the concept of ASEAN Centrality. are something that we must use to guide us,” Mr. Marcos added.

In his keynote speech, Mr. Marcos listed “seven realities” that threaten the stability of the Asia-Pacific region: that the future of the region will be determined by many nations; that the strategic competition between China and the United States is permeating the evolving regional landscape; that the region looks to ASEAN as the institution that should hold the center amid these evolving dynamics; that

geopolitics continue to permeate the global governance architecture; that the global commons will continue to be crucial to the security of all states in the region; that climate change remains a deadly challenge for the region and for the world; and that the development of advanced technologies is rapidly transforming human life and experience.

“These seven realities muddle the waters that we have to navigate in our collective journey as a community of nations. We cannot reverse course. We must persevere. We must push through,” President Marcos said.

He proposed three guiding constants for addressing these challenges – the sovereign equality of states must remain sacrosanct; ASEAN and its processes should stay central; and the rule of law and multilateralism must prevail.

“We need to begin by resoundingly rejecting misguided interpretations that paint our region as a mere theater of geopolitical rivalries,” he said.

CHINA’S COERCIVE ACTIONS ‘DANGEROUS’ TO PH – AUSTIN

UNITED States Defense Secretary

Lloyd Austin said China’s coercive actions in the Asia-Pacific is dangerous for the region, including the Philippines.

“The harassment that the Philippines has faced is dangerous, plain and simple,” he told the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore on Saturday.

Underscoring the US commitment to the region, Austin said the AsiaPacific remained Washington’s “priority theater of operations,” noting “the United States can be secure only if Asia is.”

“We are all in and we’re not going anywhere,” he said.

President Ferdinand Marcos said Friday that the “stabilizing presence of the United States is crucial to regional peace.” He, however, emphasized that he does not work for any powerful countries, including the United States and China.

“I don’t work for Beijing, I don’t work for Washington, I don’t work for Moscow. I work for Manila. I work for the Philippines and that’s what I need to promote,” the President said.

The Philippines, a treaty ally of the United States, is a key focus of Washington’s efforts to build an arc of alliances across the region.

“We all share an interest in ensuring that the South China Sea remains free and open,” he said, underscoring the importance of maintaining dialogue between militaries.

“There’s no substitute for open lines of communication to avoid misunderstandings and miscal culations.”

Austin on Friday met with his Chinese counterpart Dong Jun on the side lines of the gathering, expressing concern about China’s “provoca tive” military activities near Tai wan.

In his keynote address at the 21st International Institute for Strategic Studies-Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore Friday night, President Marcos said the Philippines will build its domain interest, citing the country’s

HALF of Filipino adults support legalizing divorce for “irreconcilably separated couples,” according to the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey.

The SWS on Saturday released the results after interviewing over 1,500 Filipinos nationwide from March 21 to 25.

A total of 50 percent agreed (28 percent strongly agree and 22 percent somewhat agree) that “married couples who have already separated and cannot reconcile anymore should be allowed to divorce so that they can get legally married again.” Meanwhile, 31 percent disagreed (12 percent somewhat disagree and 20 percent strongly

disagree) and 17 percent were undecided on the matter. The survey results, posted on May 31 and released on June 1, showed a net agreement score (percent agree minus percent disagree) of +19, classified by SWS as “moderately strong.” However, this is “down” from the moderately strong +27 (55 percent agree, 27 percent disagree) in June 2023 and the record-high very strong +44 (65 percent agree, 21 percent disagree) in March 2023. The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines remained firm in opposing the proposed divorce law, warning lawmakers they are supporting a measure that is “anti-family, antimarriage and anti-children.”

SINGAPOREAN LEADER

SET TO VISIT PH IN AUGUST

SINGAPOREAN President Tharman Shanmugaratnam will visit the Philippines in August, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said Saturday.

According to the President, the Singaporean leader “has already graced our invitation for him to visit and is planning a visit to our country in August. And the Prime Minister, he says, he will follow as quickly as he can.”

‘’And this is very important, as 2024 marks 55 years of diplomatic relations

between the two countries. We committed to work hard in pursuing the signing of three near completion MOUs by the time the Singaporean President visits Manila later this year,’’ President Marcos added.

Earlier, the two leaders had a meeting on bilateral relations before President Marcos’ keynote address

at the 2024 IISS Shangri-La Dialogue on Friday.

President Marcos also earlier mentioned the “significant exchanges between the Philippines and Singapore particularly on people-to-people and efforts to address climate change, including the government’s bid to the Loss and Damage Fund Board.

Mr. Marcos meanwhile said he is committed to building on the successes of his recent visits to Brunei Darussalam and Singapore to advance the Philippines’ economic and security goals.

“My promise to all Filipinos, is we will use every opportunity and

continue to build bridges that will ensure a long-lasting peace and stability in our region,” President Marcos stated upon his early morning return to Villamor Air Base on Saturday. In Brunei, President Marcos met with Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah to discuss their 40-year bilateral relationship.

They signed agreements on tourism, maritime cooperation, and seafarer training, and a letter of intent on agricultural cooperation. Mr. Marcos also engaged with Brunei’s business and energy sectors, fostering stronger economic ties.

UPHOLD RULES ON PEACE, SECURITY

PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonyte vowed to uphold international rules to promote peace and security.

Facing challenges from their respective neighbors—China for the Philippines and Russia for Lithuania—both leaders emphasized the importance of adhering to international law.

“Over a hundred years that we have been in contact in informal trade that has been going on. It’s still not balanced…all we want really, is the promotion of peace and the national interest,” President Marcos told Prime Minister Simonyte in a bilateral meeting in Singapore.

President Marcos stressed the necessity of a clear stance within international law to navi -

gate geopolitical challenges.

“The only way that we can navigate through all of these is to find ourself, plant ourself very clearly within international law, and within the rulesbased order, within the agreements that most nations are made, with one another when it comes to the resolution of these kind of differences,” he added.

Šimonyte supported President Marcos’ stance, highlighting the significance of international law for smaller states.

“Absolutely. I think that, you know, small states matter. That will be my message tomorrow on the panel but not only small states matter, international law matter because this is a safety network for small states,” she said. Charles Dantes

MARCOS PITCHES PHILIPPINES IN UN COUNCIL, SAYS COUNTRY WILL BE A ‘PEACEMAKER’

PRESIDENT Ferdinand R. Marcos

Jr. said Friday the Philippines will embrace its role as a trusted partner, credible pathfinder, and committed peacemaker, as he made a pitch for the country’s candidacy to the United Nations (UN) Security Council for the 2027-2028 term.

In his speech during the 21st International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, Mr. Marcos underscored

the country’s strong potential, given its “inevitable rise” in global standing.

“Just as we have done in the past, we will embrace our role in this region and around the world with a sense of purpose,” he said. “We will bring our experience as a trusted partner, credible pathfinder, and committed peacemaker when elected to the (United) Nations Security Council for the term of 2027-2028.”

The Chief Executive also shared

the country’s determination on all major global aspects and resiliencies to withstand all daunting challenges and vulnerabilities towards achieving its common aspirations.

“We are determined to be a force for the good, a force for peace, a champion of regional and global unity, (and) a staunch defender of the rules-based international order,” he said.

LAWMAKER SEEKS APPROVAL FOR

NTSC-ROTC MEASURE

REP. Mikee Romero of 1-Pacman party-list is pushing for the approval by Congress of the bill requiring citizen service training for college students.

Romero, a reserve officer in the Air Force with the rank of lieutenant colonel, cited the need for Congress to prioritize the enactment of the National Citizen Service Training (NSTC) and Reserve Officers’Training Corps (ROTC) bill.

Romero said the measure would amend Republic Act No. 7077, otherwise known as the Reservists’ Law, which provides for the formation and training of a “citizen armed force of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.”

He said the final approval by the House of Representatives and the Senate of the NSTC-ROTC bill would expand the military reservists’ organization which could be deployed in times of emergencies, including calamities.

In December last year, the House passed on third and final reading its version of the NSTC-ROTC bill, under which college students would undergo a two-year mandatory citizen service training, while ROTC would be optional.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has certified the bill as urgent, saying its enactment would enhance the capacity of Filipino citizens to mobilize and perform their constitutional duty to render military or civil service in times of calamities and disasters, national or local emergencies, rebellion, invasion, or war. DSWD DEPLOYS COMMAND CENTERS FOR FASTER RESPONSE

THE Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) will be able to respond more efficiently during disasters and calamities with the newly acquired 16 Mobile Command Centers (MCCs) that will soon be deployed to DSWD Field Offices across the country,  DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian said. Gatchalian also noted that the Disaster Response Command Center (DRCC), inaugurated last January by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr, serves as the agency’s central information facility for disaster monitoring, coordination, reporting, and data/information management in times of calamities.

“Pero ang nangyari (What has happened), we have a hub but we can’t talk to our regional offices. This now completes the picture, that no matter what happens, no matter how far, the mobile command centers can be deployed in a disaster area and can continue transmitting data to our regional and to our central office so that we can react commensurate to the disaster that is happening real-time,” Gatchalian said. MERALCO ADVISORY NOTES POWER INTERRUPTIONS IN LUZON GRID

SOME customers within the Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) franchise area may experience up to 2 hours of rotational power interruptions as the power distributor implements manual load dropping to manage the current red system condition in the Luzon grid.

The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) raised the red alert status for the Luzon grid from  1 pm to 12 am (June 2)  and yellow alert from 11 am to 1 pm as total unavailable capacity reached 4,682 megawatts.

our increasing vulnerabilities, we remain on track to achieve our goal of a high-income economy and a prosperous country by the year 2040, a place where Filipinos live stronglyrooted, comfortable, and secure lives.”

Recognizing the Indo-Pacific’s promising capacities of becoming the fastest-growing economic hub and the largest contributor to global growth, Marcos said he would make such capacities alive and attainable.

Meralco issued an advisory as of 2pm Saturday that among the affected areas are parts of Bulacan, Laguna, Cavite, Metro Manila, Rizal, Batangas and Quezon province at from 1pm to 5pm.

“We already requested our commercial and industrial customers to de-load to lessen the strain on the power grid,” Meralco spokesperson and head of corporate communications Joe Zaldarriaga said. Alena Mae S. Flores

MANUFACTURERS OF BASIC GOODS

OK TO IMPLEMENT PRIZE FREEZE

MORE major manufacturers of basic necessities and prime commodities have committed to implementing a voluntary price freeze in support of Filipino consumers amid rising prices of goods and the ill effects of the El Niño phenomenon, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) said.

In a statement, the DTI said several firms, including Monde Nissin, Alaska Milk Corporation, Nestlé, NutriAsia, Inc., and San Miguel Food, voluntarily issued price freeze orders on specified stock-keeping units (SKUs) of canned meat, processed milk, and bottled water.

The number of participating

manufacturers rose to eight, with the price freeze now covering a wider range of 31 SKUs. “The DTI greatly appreciates the efforts of manufacturers to freeze their prices. This collaborative initiative is vital in ensuring that consumers, especially those in areas not under price control, have continued access to basic goods at

affordable prices,” Trade Secretary Alfredo Pascual said. Additional commitments cover SKUs across six product categories: processed milk, processed canned meat or beef, bottled water, instant noodles, condiments, and coffee.

Notable brands included in the freeze are: Lucky Me! Instant Mami, Liberty Condensada, Alaska Classic Sweetened Condensed Milk, Bear Brand Fortified Powdered Milk Drink, Nestle Carnation Condensada, Datu Puti Soy Sauce, Datu Puti Vinegar, San Mig Coffee 3-in-1 Original, Purefoods Chinese Style Luncheon Meat, and Star Corned Beef.

Prior to this initiative, automatic

price freeze mechanisms were already in effect in various provinces and municipalities severely impacted by El Niño. An automatic price control freezes the prices of basic necessities for 60 days in areas placed under a state of calamity or emergency as stated in Republic Act No. 7581 or the Price Act, as amended. Complementing governmentmandated price freezes during calamities and emergencies, the DTIled voluntary price freeze initiated by manufacturers to freeze prices of select basic necessities and prime commodities (BNPCs) under DTI’s jurisdiction will last until 10 July 2024, unless otherwise specified in the price guide.

COPS NAB DRUG DEALER, SEIZE SHABU WORTH P85M IN MAKATI BUY-BUST

THE National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) has announced the arrest of a suspected drug dealer and the seizure of P85 million worth of shabu in a buy-bust operation in Makati City.

NCRPO director Maj. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. identified the suspect as Aureo Cabus Jr.

A team comprising the Regional Special Operations Group, Regional Intelligence Division, Regional Drug Enforcement Unit, Special Drug Enforcement Unit of Makati City Police Station, Makati SWAT, Makati Substation 6, and Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) carried out the operation along Osias Street in Barangay Poblacion. Seized from the suspect were 24 plastic sachets containing 12.5 kilos of shabu, drug paraphernalia, identification cards, bank cards, and a car key for a

sedan bearing plate number NCD 7353.

Cabus was also arrested in May 2021 during a PDEA-NCR buy-bust operation in Rizal Drive, BGC, Taguig City. Nartatez commended his men for the latest accomplishment.

The Bureau of Customs (BOC) meanwhile seized a parcel containing 323 grams of kush, or high-grade marijuana, with an estimated street value of P4.5 million at the Central Mail Exchange Center (CMEC) in Pasay City.  The illegal drugs were discovered upon profiling and examination of shipments.

The parcel, which was misdeclared as a “gift,” was found to contain high-grade marijuana from Toronto, Canada, and consigned to an individual in Quezon City.

Field testing conducted by the Customs Anti-Illegal Drug Task Force (CAIDTF) and PDEA confirmed the substance as kush marijuana.

GMA ACCOMPANIES BINAY IN MEETING WITH LOCAL EXECS IN PAMPANGA VISIT

MAKATI City Mayor Abigail Binay on Friday visited Pampanga, accompanied by former president and congresswoman Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and her son, Mikey Arroyo.

This visit followed Binay’s recent oath-taking as a new party member of the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC), which is considering her as one of its senatorial candidates in the upcoming midterm elections.

During her visit, the mayor met with local government officials to

discuss best governance practices and was warmly welcomed by officials and employees of Sta. Rita, Porac, Floridablanca, Lubao, and Guagua.

The city government of Makati has been actively sharing best practices in digital initiatives for better social services and enhanced resilience with other localities.

Binay’s membership oath at the NPC Clubhouse in Quezon City last Tuesday was administered by her husband, Makati Rep. Luis Campos, who is planning to run for mayor in Makati.

The NPC previously signed a coalition agreement with the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas led by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who was present at the signing ceremonies.

Binay was listed as one of the most preferred senatorial bets in next year’s polls based on the Pulse Asia Research Inc. survey conducted two months ago.

Under her leadership, Makati has received the first-ever “unqualified audit opinion” from the Commission on Audit in 2017, confirming that the city’s financial statements accurately

represent its accounts.

Additionally, in 2017, the local government posted a significant increase in revenue collections and met the performance target set by the Bureau of Local Government Finance under the Department of Finance.

Binay’s administration achieved the highest revenue collection in years without increasing taxes. In her first six months in office, from July to December 2016, the city government surpassed the revenue collection for the same period in 2015 by over P600 million.

DMW VOWS CONTINUED SUPPORT FOR OFWS ON DEATH ROW

THE Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) assured two overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) on death row in Brunei of the government’s continuing support for them.

Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac said the government will also provide lawyers for the two OFWs who would file for pardon and financial assistance. Cacdac said he was able to meet and visit OFWs Edgar Puzon and Cyrile Tagapan at the Maraburong Prison Facility 1 in Keriam, Tutong District, Brunei Darussalam.

“I conveyed the message of the President to our two kababayans of his support and continuing prayers for them,” Cacdac said adding  “Both expressed their deepest thanks to the President.” Puzon was convicted for the murder of a fellow OFW in 2005, while Tagapan has been serving his sentence since 2016 for the murder of a Bruneian national, and for arson and theft.  Puzon’s sentence, however, was commuted to life imprisonment.  Cacdac said that Puzon hopes to be granted early release as he turns 70 in January next year. Vito Barcelo

CEBUPAC JOB FAIR IN TACLOBAN ON MIGRANT WORKERS DAY

CEBU Pacific (CEB) recently held an Overseas Job Fair 2024 in Tacloban to celebrate Migrant Workers Day.

The event, which was organized in collaboration with the Department of Migrant Workers Region VIII, aimed to address the employment needs of Filipinos in sectors such as healthcare, hospitality, accounting, and skilled trades.

Over 5,000 job opportunities were offered in Australia, Japan, Malaysia, the Middle East, Thailand, and the United Arab Emirates.  CEB shared its ongoing partnership with the overseas Filipino worker group United Filipino Global (UFG), which includes initiatives like mercy flights, scholarships, and information campaigns to support overseas workers and their families.  “CEB and UFG are both committed to uplifting and supporting our modern-day heroes, the OFWs. By working together, we can make a bigger impact in the communities we serve,”said Carmina Romero, CEB Director for Corporate Communications.

The initiative builds on the success of last year’s job fair in Cebu, where CEB, UFG, and key government agencies collaborated to provide employment opportunities and host informative talks.

“We organized this job fair to provide livelihood opportunities for the people of Tacloban and nearby areas. We thank our partners for joining us in our efforts to bring hope to those who aspire for a brighter future through gainful employment,” said Gemma Sotto, UFG Chairperson. Joel E. Zurbano

AUTHORITIES SEIZE ILLEGAL VAPES WORTH MORE THAN P25M

AUTHORITIES have confiscated more than P25 million worth of illegal vape products in the first five months of the year, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) said.

The DTI said the haul surpassed the agency’s total illegal vape seizure for the entire 2023, amounting to P5.4 million.

Trade Secretary Alfredo Pascual attributed these results to the department’s heightened enforcement of Republic Act (RA) 11900, or the Vaporized Nicotine and Non-Nicotine Products Regulation Act, also known as the Vape Law.

The majority of confiscated vape products violated Rule 6, Section 1(j), which strongly prohibits the sale of vape products that are packaged, labeled, presented, and marketed with flavor descriptors or cartoon characters that appeal to minors.

“Nearly halfway through the year, the significant rise in confiscated illegal vapes demonstrates our unwavering commitment to safeguard Filipino consumers, especially our youth. These results showcase our intensified efforts and we will not stop here,” Pascual said in a statement.

ISRAEL POUNDS GAZA AFTER BIDEN OUTLINES CEASEFIRE PLAN

ISRAELI forces hammered Rafah in southern Gaza with tanks and artillery Saturday, hours after US President Joe Biden said Israel was offering a new roadmap towards a full ceasefire.

Shortly after Biden’s announcement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insisted his country would still pursue the war until it had reached all its aims, including the destruction of Hamas.

The Palestinian militant group, meanwhile, said it “considers positively” the plan laid out by Biden.

In his first major address outlining a possible end to the conflict, the US president said Israel’s three-stage offer would begin with a six-week phase that would see Israeli forces withdraw from all populated areas of Gaza.

It would also see the “release of a number

of hostages, including women, the elderly, the wounded, in exchange for (the) release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.” Israel and the Palestinians would then negotiate during those six weeks for a lasting ceasefire – but the truce would continue while the talks remained underway, Biden said.

The US leader urged Hamas to accept the Israeli offer. “It’s time for this war to end, for the day after to begin,” he said, in comments echoed by British Foreign Secretary David Cameron.

Hamas in a statement on Friday evening said it “considers positively” Biden’s speech regarding “a permanent ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, reconstruction and the exchange of prisoners.”

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken called his counterparts from Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey on Friday to press the deal.

UN chief Antonio Guterres “strongly hopes” the latest development “will lead to an

agreement by the parties for lasting peace,” his spokesman Stephane Dujarric said.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said the Israeli offer “provides a glimpse of hope and a possible path out of the war’s deadlock,” while EU chief Ursula von der Leyen welcomed a “balanced and realistic” approach to end the bloodshed.

But Netanyahu took issue with Biden’s presentation of what was on the table, insisting the transition from one stage to the next in the proposed roadmap was “conditional” and crafted to allow Israel to maintain its war aims.

“The prime minister authorized the negotiating team to present an outline for achieving (the return of hostages), while insisting that the war will not end until all of its goals are achieved,” Netanyahu’s office said. Those aims included “the return of all our hostages and the elimination of Hamas’s military and governmental capabilities,” it added. AFP

TRUMP CAMPAIGN ANNOUNCES $53M DONATIONS RAISED AFTER CONVICTION

DONALD Trump’s campaign said Friday it had raised nearly $53 million in online small-dollar donations after he was convicted in his New York hush money trial, boasting that the verdict had galvanized his support “like never before.”

The record haul was equivalent to more than $2 million raised per hour, it said.

Senior campaign aides Chris LaCivita and Susie Wiles said in statements that more than a third of the total came from new donors to the campaign and hailed an “outpouring of support from patriots across our country.”

Calling the Thursday court decision a “sham trial verdict” the advisors reported that the “digital fundraising system was overwhelmed with support” despite temporary online delays “because of the amount of traffic” from small-dollar donors.

As of Friday evening, the day’s total had climbed to a whopping $52.8 million.

A jury convicted Trump Thursday on all 34 charges of falsifying business records to cover up a sex scandal in the final stages of the 2016 presidential campaign.

Prosecutors said Trump had sex with porn actress Stormy Daniels soon after his wife Melania had given birth in 2006, and then paid hush money a decade later to avoid the fallout and deceive voters, before creating false paperwork to conceal the payment. AFP

TENS OF THOUSANDS OF KOREANS CELEBRATE PRIDE DESPITE BACKLASH

TENS of thousands of LGBTQ South Koreans and their supporters gathered in central Seoul for annual Pride celebrations Saturday, despite the event’s traditional venue being banned by authorities for the second consecutive year. Same-sex marriage remains unrecognized in Asia’s fourth largest economy, and activists have long emphasized the need for legislation outlawing discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.

This year’s Pride Parade, marking its 25th anniversary and one of the largest in Asia, was denied permission to gather at the Seoul Plaza in front of City Hall, where the main festivities have traditionally been held.

Seoul’s conservative mayor Oh Se-hoon has said he “personally can’t agree with homosexuality,” but municipal authorities blamed a scheduling conflict and said the venue had already been reserved for an outdoor event themed around books. It instead took place in the streets in central Seoul, with companies and organisations including the US embassy, IKEA, and Amnesty International participating to show support. Areas surrounding Seoul’s major thoroughfares Namdaemun-ro and Ujeongguk-ro were packed with excited participants wearing rainbow-themed costumes and make-up, some blowing bubbles

and many waving orange balloons – the theme color for this year’s edition.

“The color range symbolises an intermediary quality between red and yellow. It doesn’t belong anywhere but exists independently, ... akin to our queer way of being,” organizers said in a statement.

According to the Pride organizers, three other venues managed by the Seoul city government, including the Seoul Museum of History, were also prohibited from being used for side events due to “causing social conflict.”

The authorities’ decision was “nonsensical,” but it does not diminish the pride that LGBTQ

JAPAN CRYPTO DMM SAYS $300M BITCOIN LOST

IN DIGITAL ‘LEAK’

JAPANESE crypto exchange DMM

Bitcoin said it had lost bitcoin worth around $300 million in what it described as “an unauthorized leak” from its digital wallet.

“We are still investigating details of the damages,” it said in a statement after detecting the “unauthorized leak” at around 13:26 (0426 GMT) Friday.

“We have already taken measures to prevent the unauthorized leak, but we have also implemented restrictions on the use of some services to ensure additional safety,” the exchange said.

DMM Bitcoin did not give details on the “leak” but global cryptocurrency analysis firm Chainalysis said it was one of the biggest crypto hacks.

“Today’s hack of Japanese exchange DMM Bitcoin for $305M worth of bitcoin is the biggest hack since Dec 2022 and the 7th largest crypto hack ever,” Chainalysis said in a post on social media platform X, adding it had labelled the funds as “stolen.” DMM Bitcoin said the amount of the “leak” was about 48.2 billion yen ($300 million), which equals to 4,502.9 bitcoins.

NOTORIOUS CANADA SERIAL KILLER DEAD AFTER PRISON ASSAULT

A CANADIAN serial killer, convicted in 2007 of murdering six women, died Friday after being attacked two weeks ago by a fellow inmate.

Robert Pickton, 74, a former pig farmer from western Canada, is one of the country’s most notorious killers. Although he was sentenced to life in prison for six murders, he was suspected of killing many more women.

Pickton died in Quebec on Friday “in hospital following injuries resulting from an assault involving another inmate on May 19, 2024,” Correctional Service Canada said in a statement. His victims were killed between 1997 and 2001. Vancouver police were criticized at the time for not taking the women’s disappearances seriously because many were prostitutes, drug addicts or indigenous.

Pickton was arrested in 2002.

MARIAN Robinson, the mother of former first lady Michelle Obama, who moved into the White House with the first family, helping care for her young granddaughters and providing a stabilizing presence in one of the world’s most stressful residences, died Friday, her family said.

“We needed her. The girls needed her. And she ended up being our rock through it all,” her family said in a statement. Robinson was 86.

LGBTQ festivals have often been targeted by evangelical Christian groups, who have thrown water bottles and verbally abused Pride marchers and tried to block their route by lying down in the street in the past. AFP

Though she eschewed the spotlight, Robinson was present for some of the Obama family’s most visible moments, often appearing at holiday celebrations or other events alongside the first couple and their two daughters, Sasha and Malia.

FILIPINO CRAFTSMANSHIP SUPPORTS GLOBAL BRAND

FASHION

Interiors by Paul Cornelissen transcends the limitations of a typical retail space. It offers an immersive experience, showcasing exceptional Filipino craftsmanship and design with the potential to gain global recognition.

Founded in 2015 by Paul Cornelissen’s father, Paul Sr., a Dutch trader who fell in love with Filipino craftsmanship during visits in the 70s, the company has grown into a major exporter with over 100 clients worldwide.

“The collection is named after us. My father is a trader who grew a fondness for the Philippines. The Philippines is one of the most creative countries together with Indonesia. Due to the lack of commercial views, we see a lot less international buyers coming to the Philippines. On the other hand, I think there’s a lot of very good supply of raw materials which can be sourced from the local market,” Cornelissen said.

The younger Paul joined the family business after earning an Economics degree and working as a sales representative for his father’s import company.

With a keen eye honed by international travels, he now guides the design and export strategy for

Global trends

Unfazed by a diminished Philippine presence at international furniture fairs, Fashion Interiors by Paul Cornelissen maintains a robust international profile, attending fairs and cultivating relationships with clients across the globe. Its reach spans continents, with customers in Australia, the US, the Middle East, Europe and South America. It has a network of showrooms beyond their flagship store in Makati, including a space in Pampanga and a year-round booth at Deco Central. Cornelissen, a seasoned traveler

himself, spends a significant portion of the year attending major furniture fairs like the recent Milan Furniture Show.

These events serve as a vital source of inspiration, allowing him to keep his finger on the pulse of global design trends. He observes everything from popular materials and finishes to innovative furniture shapes and functions.

Upon returning to the Philippines, he skillfully integrates them with the company’s signature “East meets West” aesthetic and readily available Filipino materials. This approach results in furniture collections that feel fresh and internationally relevant, while still retaining a unique Filipino identity.

Expansion plan

While Fashion Interiors by Paul Cornelissen boasts a strong presence in the export market, Cornelissen acknowledges the potential for domestic growth.

He sees an increasing appreciation for high-quality, design-forward furniture among Filipinos who have traveled abroad and are familiar with international trends.

The company’s existing showrooms in Makati and Pampanga cater to this growing demand, and Cornelissen hints at the possibility of further expansion within the Philippines. PHILIPPINE fintech startup Beppo

CATS are known for their distinctive behaviors, including their interesting drinking habits. Unlike other pets, cats have specific preferences when it comes to staying hydrated, which can sometimes be puzzling for their owners. By becoming familiar with these unique behaviors, we can better comprehend their instincts and choices, ultimately promoting the health and wellbeing of our beloved feline companions.

Cats and Water: An Evolutionary Perspective

Cats are known to be selective when it comes to their water sources, a trait that can be linked to their ancestral roots. An article titled "Cats Fussy Water Drinking Habits" from the Scratch & Patch website explains that wild cats would avoid drinking near their prey in order to protect their water from contamination. This natural survival instinct has carried over to domestic cats, which is why some cats may choose not to drink water that is placed near their food bowls. This behavior helps to maintain the cleanliness and purity of their drinking water.

Furthermore, cats have developed a biological mechanism to derive a significant portion of their hydration needs from their prey, which typically contains 70-75 per cent water. This natural adaptation may result in domestic cats, particularly those consuming wet food, consuming less water than anticipated by their caregivers. However, it is crucial to ensure access to fresh water at all times to prevent dehydration, especially for cats who are fed dry food.

Preference for Running Water

One of the most common peculiarities observed in cats is their preference for running water over still water. The Pets4Homes article "Why Does My Cat Have Weird Drinking Habits?" explains that many cats are attracted to the sound and movement of running water. This behavior likely stems from an instinctual understanding that running water is less likely to be contaminated compared to stagnant water. This is why cats often drink from taps, showers, or fountains rather than their water bowls.

Flowing water is not only a safer option for cats but also provides increased oxygenation and cooler temperatures, which can be more enticing to felines. According to Scratch & Patch, the movement and sound of running water can capture a cat's interest and stimulate their curiosity, resulting in increased water consumption. For cats with discerning tastes when it comes to water, purchasing a cat water fountain may be a beneficial investment to promote better hydration habits.

Unusual Drinking Spots

Cats are known for their unpredictable nature, and this extends to their choice of drinking spots. It is not uncommon for cats to drink from unusual places like sinks, shower trays, or even human glasses. The Pets4Homes article notes that some cats enjoy the shallow, wide surface of a shower tray, especially if the water is at room temperature or slightly warm. This preference may also be due to the cat's dislike of their water bowl, either because of its material or placement.

Similarly, many cats prefer drinking from glasses, particularly if the water level is high enough to avoid wetting their whiskers. Cats have very sensitive whiskers, and drinking from a deep bowl can cause

AS A pet owner, choosing the right food for your cat is one of the most critical decisions you will make for their health and well-being. Cats, with their particular dietary needs, require a balanced diet. The two primary options available are wet cat food and dry cat food. Each has its benefits and drawbacks, and understanding these can help you make an informed decision for your furry companion.

Nutritional Content and Hydration

One of the most significant differences between wet and dry cat food is their moisture content. “Wet cat food typically contains between 70-80% moisture, while dry cat food contains around 10%.

PETS

CATS’ WEIRD DRINKING HABITS

discomfort, leading them to seek out alternative water sources.

Whisker Fatigue and Bowl Aversion

The sensitivity of a cat’s whiskers plays a significant role in their drinking habits. Whisker fatigue, a condition where a cat's whiskers become overstimulated by touching the sides of a bowl, can make drinking from narrow or deep bowls uncomfortable. According to Scratch & Patch, this discomfort can lead cats to avoid their water bowls altogether. Using shallow, wide bowls made of ceramic or stainless steel can alleviate this issue and encourage your cat to drink more comfortably.

The Ritual of Pawing at Water

Some cats exhibit the peculiar habit of pawing at their water before drinking. This behavior might seem playful, but it often has practical reasons behind it. As mentioned in the Pets4Homes article, pawing at water can help cats determine the water level and ensure it is safe to drink without wetting their whiskers. It can also be a way for cats to test the water's freshness and temperature.

Outdoor vs. Indoor Water Preferences

Many cats prefer drinking water from outdoor sources like puddles, water butts, or even by licking

This high moisture content in wet food is particularly beneficial for cats, as they are naturally prone to dehydration,” said Dr. Allan Walters in the “Feline Diet: Wet vs Dry Food” published in the Paws Natural website.

Unlike dogs, cats often do not drink enough water on their own, relying heavily on their food for hydration. Wet food can help maintain urinary tract health and prevent conditions such as kidney disease and urinary crystals.

In terms of nutritional content, both wet and dry foods can provide a balanced diet, but it is important to check the labels for quality. Wet food often contains fewer carbohydrates and more protein and fat, which aligns more closely with a cat’s natural diet. Dry food, on the other hand, tends to have more carbohydrates due to the manufacturing process.

Dental Health

A commonly cited benefit of dry cat food is its positive impact on dental health. The crunchy texture can help reduce plaque and tartar buildup as the cat chews. While dry food can contribute to dental hygiene, it is not a substitute for regular dental care, such as brushing your cat’s teeth or professional cleanings by a veterinarian. Some cats may not chew their dry food thoroughly, reducing its effectiveness in cleaning their teeth.

Convenience and Cost

Dry cat food is generally more convenient for pet owners. It has a longer shelf life, does not require refrigeration once opened, and is easier to store. It’s also simpler to measure and leave out for cats that prefer to graze throughout the day. This convenience often makes dry food the preferred choice for busy pet owners.

Cost is another factor where dry food typically has an advantage. Dry cat food is less expensive than wet food. For households with multiple cats or those on a tight budget, dry food can be a more economical option.

Taste and Digestibility

“Cats can be notoriously picky eaters, and wet food is often more palatable and appetizing due to its texture and aroma,” said Dr. Walters.

“The variety of flavors and textures available in wet food can entice even the fussiest of eaters, making it an excellent option for cats with reduced appetites or

dew off grass. This preference for outdoor water can be baffling to owners who provide fresh water indoors. According to Pets4Homes, rainwater and other natural water sources might taste different and be more appealing to cats. Additionally, outdoor water sources mimic the natural drinking experiences of wild cats, making them more attractive to domestic cats.

Ensuring Proper Hydration

Given these quirks, ensuring your cat stays properly hydrated can be challenging but not impossible. Here are some tips to accommodate your cat's drinking preferences: Provide Multiple Water Sources: Place water bowls in various locations around your home, especially in quiet, low-traffic areas where your cat feels safe.

Use Different Types of Bowls: Experiment with bowls of different materials and shapes to find the one your cat prefers. Shallow, wide bowls are often the most comfortable for cats.

Keep Water Fresh: Refill water bowls daily and clean them with gentle soap and water to prevent the build-up of bacteria and debris. Fresh water is more appealing to cats.

Consider a Water Fountain: If your cat prefers running water, a cat water fountain can be a great

investment. The movement and sound of the water can encourage your cat to drink more.

Separate Food and Water Bowls: Place water bowls away from food bowls to prevent contamination and make the water more appealing to your cat.

Monitor Your Cat's Hydration: Keep an eye on your cat's water intake and look for signs of dehydration, such as lethargy, dry gums, and decreased skin elasticity. If you suspect your cat is not drinking enough, consult your veterinarian.

Cats' unique drinking habits are a blend of evolutionary instincts and individual preferences. Understanding these behaviors, as detailed in the articles from Pets4Homes and Scratch & Patch, can help cat owners provide better hydration solutions tailored to their feline companions. By accommodating their quirks and preferences, we can ensure our cats remain healthy and well-hydrated, while also enjoying the amusing and endearing rituals they perform around their water sources.

specific dietary needs,” Dr. Walters added.

In terms of digestibility, wet food can be easier for some cats to digest, particularly those with dental issues or older cats with reduced chewing ability. The high moisture content also aids in digestion, helping to prevent constipation.

Weight Management

Obesity is a common problem among domestic cats, and diet plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy weight.

“Wet food, with its higher moisture content, can help cats feel fuller faster, which can aid in weight control. The lower carbohydrate content in wet food also aligns better with a cat’s carnivorous nature, potentially reducing the risk of weight gain compared to high-carb dry foods,” Dr. Walters noted. Portion control is important regardless of the type of food. Overfeeding, whether wet or dry food, can lead to obesity and associated health problems. Pet owners should follow feeding guidelines and consult their veterinarian to determine the appropriate portion sizes.

Special Dietary Needs

Cats with specific health conditions may benefit from a particular type of food. For instance, cats with urinary tract issues often do better on wet food due to its high moisture

content. Some prescription dry foods are formulated to address specific health concerns, such as weight management, dental health, or gastrointestinal issues.

A Balanced Approach

Ultimately, the choice between wet and dry cat food depends on your cat’s individual needs and preferences, as well as your lifestyle and budget. Many veterinarians recommend a mixed diet to leverage the benefits of

both types of food. Offering both wet and dry food can provide a balanced diet, promote hydration, support dental health, and keep your cat engaged with a variety of flavors and textures. Regardless of the type of food you choose, always go for the high-quality products that meet your cat’s nutritional requirements. Consult with your veterinarian to ensure your cat’s diet is well-balanced and tailored to their specific health needs. With the right approach, you can ensure your feline friend enjoys a healthy, happy, and well-nourished life. ALivestock farming is one of the main culprits in greenhouse gas emissions, the primary cause of global warming.

Cellular agriculture, where food or nutrients are grown from cell cultures, is increasingly seen as a green alternative to animal agriculture.

Lab-grown meat, eggs and milk have made headlines in recent years, with scientists using animal cell cultures – a process some have criticized as unnatural, highly processed, energy-consuming and costly.

But at Solar Foods' recently opened factory outside Helsinki, scientists are using new technology to grow protein out of cells using air and electricity.

By feeding a microbe with carbon dioxide, hydrogen and some minerals, and powering the process with electricity from renewable sources, the company has managed to create a protein-rich powder that can be used as a milk and egg substitute.

"We can source our main feed-

stock for the microbe from the air,"

Solar Foods chief executive Pasi Vainikka said.

"We have started the production of the world's most sustainable protein."

Founded by Vainikka and JuhaPekka Pitkanen in 2017, Solar Foods launched the "world's first factory growing food out of thin air" in April.

"Much of the animal-like protein of today can actually be produced through cellular agriculture and we can let agricultural land re-wild and thereby build carbon stock," Vainikka said, referring to the process whereby forests and soil absorb and store carbon.

One kilo of the new protein, dubbed "solein," emits 130 times less greenhouse gases than the same amount of protein produced by beef production in the European Union, a 2021 scientific study claimed.

Vainikka navigates his way through the factory's laboratory and into the control room, where a dozen people at computer screens

Transforming food production and consumption is at the heart of combating the climate crisis and preventing biodiversity loss, according to Emilia Nordlund, head of industrial biotechnology and food research at the VTT Technical Research Center.

Yet current projections show the consumption of meat is expected to increase in coming years.

"Industrial food production, especially livestock production, is one of the biggest causes of greenhouse gas emissions (and) the biggest cause of biodiversity loss, eutrophication and freshwater usage," she said.

New food production technologies can help cut emissions and "decentralise and diversify food production," Nordlund said.

"However, at the same time, we must improve the existing food production methods to make them more sustainable and resilient," she added.

Fermentation technology used to produce different nutrients, such as

proteins, has been around for decades.

But the field has expanded significantly in recent years with new technological solutions and research projects emerging worldwide.

Slow progress

Some of the most active start-up hubs focusing on cellular agriculture are in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands and Israel, Nordlund said.

"We are in a crucial phase as we will see which start-ups will survive," she said, adding that stalling bureaucracy was slowing cellular agriculture's take-off in the EU.

Dressed in protective gear to prevent bacteria contamination in the factory, Vainikka showed off a giant steel tank in a shiny production hall.

"This is a fermenter holding 20,000 liters," he said, explaining that the microbe multiplies inside the tank as it gets fed the greenhouse gas.

continuously extracted from the tank to be processed into the yellowish protein-rich powder with a flavour described as "nutty" and "creamy."

"The fermenter produces the same amount of protein per day as 300 milking cows or 50,000 laying hens," Vainikka said.

That equals "five million meals' worth of protein per year."

For now, the main purpose of the small Finnish plant employing around 40 people is to "prove that the technology scales," so it can attract the necessary investments pending European regulatory approval.

While the protein has been cleared for sale in Singapore where some restaurants have used it to make ice cream, it is still awaiting classification as a food product in the EU and the United States.

To have any real impact, the aim is to "build an industrial plant 100 times the size of this one," Vainikka said. AFP

BENEDICT CUA OPENS UP ABOUT FATHERHOOD, TAKING RISKS, AND BUILDING A CAREER ONLINE

BENEDICT Cua , a content creator known for his lifestyle videos on YouTube, has recently gained attention after revealing in a video that he is now a father to a young boy named Aleck . Despite the polished appearance of his life in his videos, including his newly renovated home and his new role as a father, Cua discussed the long and arduous journey it took for him to get there. In his vlog titled My life story: Becoming a father, the 31-year-old content creator recounted his humble beginnings, helping his parents sell slippers on the streets of Balintawak with his two siblings around the age of four.

As his parents continued to work long hours to provide for them, Cua tried out other ways to help his family, even trying out networking. He eventually began studying Business Management at the De La Salle University.

“Until now, I don’t know how my parents managed to get me into De La Salle University, considering how little we had at that time, which was almost nothing. They always just told us, ‘Don’t worry, we’ll take care of it. Your job is just to finish your studies.’ They never told us anything more. We just understood,” Cua said in the vernacular.

After finishing college quickly, Cua interned at Nestle, then worked as a corporate management trainee for nearly two years before becoming a key account executive for SM Supermarket & Savemore. Despite his career success, Cua realized that climbing the corporate ladder was not for him.

“It was my dream job but I quit it because I realized that dream job wasn’t my dream job anymore,” he admitted.

After submitting his resignation, Cua decided to help his parents with their small business for the next two years. Eventually, he began feeling lost because he no longer knew what he was doing with his life.

As he spent many nights wallowing in self-pity, he eventually came across the thought of finding his passion again. With that in mind, he decided to spend his weekends trying things out to see if it would ignite his passions.

This eventually led him to try out acting classes such as Peta Theater Acting and Star Magic Introductory workshops, which was where he discovered that he enjoyed expressing himself.

In one of his acting workshops, he met fellow content creator Baninay Bautista who often included him in her vlogs. Bautista ended up urging him to make his own YouTube channel and post his videos.

Giving himself a deadline of a year to see if there would be anything that would come out of the endeavor, Cua ended up religiously posting videos, which gained a lot of traction and led him to where he is now.

While his YouTube career also saw various ups and downs, Cua came to persevere and now intends to refocus his attention on being more appreciative of the things he has in his life.

Now a father of one, Cua is determined to be a hands-on father to his son and raise him in the best way that he can as he balances being a devoted dad while being a content creator.

“I may not have answers all the time, but I promise to seek guidance and be the best father that I can be,” said Cua to his son.

“I love you more than watermelons,” he added while shedding a few tears.

Cua rose to fame with his vlogs and other content, which sometimes features his fellow

Called “Paradiso,” the album is released under ABS-CBN Star Music.

Reflecting on his journey from an independent artist to a signed recording talent, Jace expressed gratitude towards key figures who believed in his talent, citing Roxy Liquigan, Jonathan Manalo, Mela Ballano, and ABS-CBN Music for their support and guidance.

“Going mainstream has always been a dream of mine. The journey I had to go through to get to where I am today was tough. I’m very grateful that I’m now seeing and reaping the fruits of my labor,” he noted.

“Becoming a part of the ABSCBN Music Christmas Station ID soundtrack was also a dream come true,” Jace added referring to his initial project with the label.

The carrier single of the album, titled “Casual,” blends Dancepop with Latin and Reggaeton influences.

“It tackles themes of love and intimacy,” Jace said.

Released on Sept. 15, 2023, “Casual” soared to no. 11 on iTunes Philippines Top Songs Chart and no. 10 on iTunes Philippines Pop Chart, marking a promising start for the album’s promotional journey.

Then I realized, our flightless friends have it all figured out,” said Sta. Maria. She shared lessons she learned from watching animals. She talked about enjoying simple things like snow days and being loyal and supportive like penguins. She said it’s important to show love, make friends, and keep trying even when things are tough, just like penguins do. She also underscored the beauty of being fair and patient, without holding grudges, and how her trip to Chile made her even more adventurous. Sta.
