Wargrave House Report

Wargrave has had a very busy term that has very significantly consisted of the Wargrave Annual Rowathon for a specific charity.

This year, all the money raised from the event went to the charity ‘Warm the Homeless’. The Wargravians including teachers had to take part in two sets of ten minutes of rowing, giving everything they had for charity but also to compete for their year group. It must be said that everyone’s efforts were outstanding with some boys rowing in the very early hours of the morning which proved to be very demanding. The overall winner, however, was Wargrave’s Head of House Miguel Santos de Quevedo Cardiel who rowed an astounding 2,700 metres in one of his ten minute slots. Connor Gorman was the runner up. As a whole, Wargrave’s term has moved pretty swiftly with interhouse hockey and football on the horizon which should allow Wargrave to competitively take the lead in the house points system. Furthermore, the whole of Wargrave House are eagerly anticipating a nice Easter break while preparing to return to a sunny Eastbourne to endure the cricket but, more importantly, the exams that lie ahead!

Gonville House Report

It has been a quiet term, but Gonville has managed to come up with great results.

On 5th of February, interhouse football fixtures took place. These were not the official fixtures but it was useful to see the level we were playing at. Due to the lack of players from years 11, 12 and 13, we had to play on the same team with Powell. In the end, with a great performance of the Year 12 pupils, we managed to take the win, only 1 draw against Pennell and three big wins against Craig, Reeves and Wargrave who all had great teams. On Wednesday 2nd of March, the first game of interhouse chess took place. We had a really difficult opponent starting against Craig. There were three different games: one for year 9, another one for year 11 and the last one for year 12. We ended up winning two out of three games. It is looking really good for the chess team who had a great performance and are now thinking about their next game.

CHARITY UPDATE Charity Update

Gonville House raised over £400 for Matthew 25 Mission (a charity which seeks to rebuild broken lives, including those who are homeless). In addition, over 4 boxes of fleeces and rain jackets were hand delivered, just part of the on-going great work Gonville is doing to support this charity. Reeves House had a fantastic revue and in the process raised over £400, which will be donated to The British Red Cross, for their work with Ukrainian refugees. On the 10th March, a musical evening by pupils was held in Tim’s Café (the first time the premises has been used for this purpose) and raised over £660 for The British Red Cross. Not bad for a night’s work! The annual Charity Revue was held in February with some great performances, raising money for the school’s two Chapel Charities –Bright Idea in Tennis and International Rescue (Afghanistan). On Saturday 29th January Eastbourne College held a 24-hours tennis marathon. Each of the 10 Houses organised their group of pupils to play in a 2-hour slot, with each slot being supervised by tennis coaches and staff who coordinated matches, games, drills and practices. This was all in aid of 'Bright Ideas for Tennis', a charity run by former Pro and Davis Cup player, Danny Sapsford. Funds were raised for disability tennis and will be distributed to local schools and tennis providers in the Eastbourne area. With a raffle and special prize auction, in excess of £4000 was pledged by the whole Eastbourne College community. A fantastic achievement all-round! Watt House, raised more money for charity – this time at their House Revue, with over £320 for Macmillan Cancer Support. This supplemented over £700 raised in a Cake Sale - the power of cake! A 24-hour Rowathon was undertaken by Wargrave House raising over £5000 for the charity Warming Up The Homeless. It was a really monumental effort by the whole House. Pennell House raised over £400 for UNICEF’s Afghanistan Appeal at their House Concert. Another great effort. Blackwater House raised over £200 at their House Concert for Young Minds, and a phenomenal £775 for Makomborero UK, which is a small charity which seeks to relieve poverty in Zimbabwe through the education of disadvantaged children, and by supporting their families and the communities they live in. Blackwater House has also donated food, toiletries, clothes and other things to Ukrainians fleeing their country, which have since been driven to Poland in a large lorry (through the connections of a parent). The Charity Lunch in January raised over £370 for the Chapel Charities, showing that small sacrifices can be a practical (as well as a symbolic) help to others. Finally, Powell House raised over £340 at their recent House Revue for The Chaseley Trust, which is a unique nursing home in Eastbourne, specialising in caring for residents with complex neurological disabilities or progressive conditions.
