by Barbara LaMonica Frank P. Long Intermediate School will open its doors to faculty, staï¬ and students when the 2017-2018 school year launches in September. That decision was announced by South Country School District oï¬cials on Wednesday, August 16, following a marathon public meeting that lasted over three hours which included ï¬ndings from air quality and water test results and testimony from residents and environmental representatives. The school board made the decision that the school will open to students and staï¬ after Glenn Neuschwender, president of Enviroscience Consultants, Inc. laid out in a ï¬nal investigation report which encompassed 69 samples â 65 indoor and four outdoor - that, with the exception of two rooms in the building, the school is free of elevated levels of contaminants. Following testimonies, School Board President Cheryl Felice said with the data the
district has from studies and the report from Enviroscience combined with three previous meetings, âThere is no deï¬nitive reason to close Frank P. Long.â But, the board president noted, âI donât think the conversation should end here.â Felice told listeners at the meeting: âWe do have to work with the Town of Brookhaven and the DEC (Department of Environmental Conservation).â While the community-at-large is not pointing ï¬ngers at the district for air and water issues at Frank P. Long, the school boardâs decision for the school to open in September was unsettling for some parents and staï¬ who remain convinced with the belief that documented illnesses of students and staï¬ who attended the school, and the passing of some faculty members who taught at the school over decades, are linked to air and water quality issues in the school.
