BY ROBERT CHARTUK Be sure to check out the remarkable story this week about Steve Castleton, who’s had his lease on life renewed several times and has dedicated his remaining time on earth to helping others. The holidays give us pause to reflect on the gift of precious life and how we can live with purpose knowing that any day could be our last.

I’m reminded of the story we covered earlier this year of Alan Beck, the retired fireman who shocked everyone by coming back from what doctors said was an impossible place. His family had already said goodbye. A priest had administered last rites. They turned off the machines that were keeping him alive. Then,

against all odds, he breathed on his own, lifted his thumbs, and quietly reassured everyone: “Daddy’s all right.”

Stories like Alan’s stay with us because they strip life down to what matters. Love. Family.

Gratitude. Time. In the days after his recovery, the Beck family spoke not about fear, but about togetherness—about not wasting a second of what had been given back to them.

It’s a powerful reminder that tomorrow is never guaranteed, and that grace can arrive when we least expect it.

We saw that same fragile line between life and loss in the rescue of Lenny Muzzillo at a senior picnic. One moment he was dancing, the next he was gone—until three Suffolk

The Gift We Often Forget: Life Itself County officers refused to give up. For more than seven minutes, they performed CPR and used a defibrillator, fighting for a man they did not know.

Because they acted, Lenny went home ten days later to his family, alive and grateful.

It’s fitting that those officers were honored at a New York Jets game before tens of thousands of fans. But the real honor was quieter: a life saved, a family made whole again.

As the holidays approach, these stories invite us to slow down. To forgive sooner. To say what needs saying. To help where we can. Life is precious, fleeting, and often miraculous—and the greatest gift we can give is to live it with purpose and compassion.

Dr. Miller Leaves Legacy of Faith and Service

By Robert Chartuk Dr. Frederick Henry Miller, a devoted veteran, faith leader, educator, and tireless advocate for fellow service members, passed away on December 15.

He was widely known across the South Shore for a life defined by service, compassion, and an unwavering belief in the power of staying positive, even in the hardest moments.

Dr. Miller served his country with honor in the United States Air Force from 1950 to 1954 during the Korean War. Following his active-duty service, he continued his military commitment as first sergeant with the 106th Medical Squadron of the New York Air National Guard. In civilian life, he built a distinguished career as a parasitologist at Nassau University Medical Center, where his work reflected the same dedication he brought to every role he

undertook.

A longtime resident of the William

Floyd community, Dr. Miller served as a trustee on the William Floyd Board of Education from 2005 to 2008, helping guide the district with a steady hand and a service-first mindset. He was also deeply involved in veterans organizations, including the Arthur H. Clune Post 1533 of the American Legion, where he served as chaplain, board member, and third division commander of the Suffolk County American Legion.

Through that role, he trained more than 150 Legionnaires in suicide prevention.

For many years, Dr. Miller also reached the public through his weekly column in the South Shore Press, where he wrote candidly about PTSD, faith, and the often-unseen struggles veterans face after returning home.

“He was a very special man,” said Mirriam Gillies, who knew him through his role as Grand Marshal of the East Moriches Veterans Parade. “Fred helped

so many veterans and others. He always said, ‘Stay Positive.’ I learned a lot from him.”

Neighbor Rosemary Lauria remembered him as “an honorable man, a gentleman,” noting his deep involvement with Veterans Affairs and his willingness to listen. “He always greeted me as, ‘What can I do for you, young lady,’” she said.

South Shore Press Sales Manager Fred Towle described Dr. Miller as “a pillar of faith and community—someone who lived his beliefs through action and made everyone around him better for it.”

An elder at Christ Lutheran Church of East Moriches and an active member of the Rotary Club of Shirley and the Mastics and the local Chamber of Commerce, Dr. Miller leaves behind a legacy of service, wisdom, and compassion that will not be forgotten.

2025: A Year of Progress

EDITORIAL

By Ed Romaine I recently had the chance to voice our region’s concerns to the New York State Senate Minority Delegation. And believe me, between unfunded mandates from Albany, rising healthcare and pension costs, and a lack of state funding, there are many actionable steps Albany can take.

I was pleased, however, to showcase the progress we have made both this year and during my first term. It is that progress that contributes to my vision of a safer and more affordable Suffolk—a blueprint for other leaders across the state.

Bond Rating Upgrades The clearest reflection of the positive budgeting changes implemented in Suffolk is our improved bond ratings from both Fitch Ratings and S&P. Both agencies currently rate the County at “AA-” and have upgraded Suffolk’s outstanding bonds.

Similarly, both ratings agencies have assigned Suffolk County a positive outlook going forward.

Supporting this assessment are the County’s large reserve funds, conservative budgeting practices and estimates, and its sizable tax base.

Infrastructure Suffolk County maintains 1,150 lane miles of highways, 110 bridges (including the wearing surfaces of 39 New York State bridges), 194 culverts, 57 spillways, 31 bulkheads, and four bascule (movable) bridges. The County also oversees 80 priority navigational channels and manages approximately 650 traffic signals. These responsibilities include permitting and regulatory compliance required by state and federal agencies to ensure transportation safety.

This past year, our Department of Public Works worked with regulators in real time when the aging Smith Point Bridge was temporarily reduced to a three-ton weight limit by the State DOT. By coordinating with the state, we were able to keep one lane open at 15 tons, allowing emergency vehicles continued access to the beach.

Through executive action, I fast-tracked both the retrofitting of the existing bridge and the construction of a new one. A 2021 press release under my predecessor stated that a new Smith Point Bridge would be completed in 2024. Unfortunately, that project was never initiated. Delaying maintenance only increases costs, as demonstrated by the need to

retrofit the current structure.

Sewering Thanks to voters who approved the referendum authorized by the Suffolk County Clean Water Act, the County now has a dedicated revenue stream to support several ambitious sewer projects.

Voters in Oakdale and Great River approved the Great River Sewer Expansion with 89 percent support. The project will connect 400 homes to the Southwest Sewer District, with connection costs covered by state and federal grants.

Earlier this year, the Forge River Sewage Treatment Plant connected nearly 2,000 homes and businesses in the Forge River Watershed to the system.

Across Long Island, major wastewater projects are underway that serve the dual goals of economic development and the reduction of nitrogen in surface and groundwater.

Social Services How many harrowing stories have we heard on the nightly news of children trafficked, abused, or worse in our county? Too many.

My office spearheaded Operation Safe and Lasting Return, a multi-agency effort to locate and return trafficked children and adolescents. By examining the most severe cases, we identified major

gaps in communication between departments, law enforcement, and nonprofit organizations, and addressed those deficiencies through new technology and improved processes.

We unveiled these changes at our annual child protection conference, attended by hundreds of social workers, law enforcement officers, and educators.

In other areas of Social Services, including the administration of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), we increased the percentage of applications processed in a timely manner to 95.5 percent, up from 59 percent in January 2024.

We accomplished this without any budgetary increases.

Together, through common-sense policies, we can continue improving the delivery of essential government services without straining our finances.

Public Safety Over the past two years, I have increased the number of police officers and detectives in the Suffolk County Police Department to help keep our communities safe.

Working with the Legislature, I enacted laws to stop illegal street takeovers, prevent the sale of illegal vaping products, and protect neighborhood quality of life—key

priorities of my administration.

These issues have real victims and serious consequences. Earlier this year, a street takeover blocked emergency responders, delaying an ambulance’s arrival to a critical call and putting lives at risk. Likewise, flavored vaping products are actively marketed to children, increasing health risks among young people.

Together with our partners in government and community leadership, I remain committed to making Suffolk safer and more affordable.

The custom of displaying a decorated evergreen in one’s home is said to have originated in Germany or Central Europe (what is now known as Latvia) and is believed to have pagan roots. Some of these early peoples called themselves Druids and worshipped trees.

Winter is a season people must fight.

This impulse seems to be universal.

When my father, the youngest in the family, grew up in East Harlem, his Christmas task involved staying up next to the tree with a bucket of sand. The tree was decorated with lighted candles.

(He admitted to falling asleep.)

The Full Amount Dear Editor: The last few weeks have been hard, with inflation wearing us down and the cold weather starting to get to us. So I wasn’t surprised when my mother called and told me that, due to all the troubles in the world, Christmas was going to be pretty lean this year and that she might not be able to send me as much as she usually does. Being the optimist that I am, I said, “Don’t worry, Mom, it’ll be alright. It’s times like this that we all have to cut back.”

I’ll admit it bothered me a great deal for a couple of days. I mean, come on—this was my own mother. I come from a large family, and we’ve been through some tough times in the past, but she always made sure there was enough to go around. She should realize how much I depended on the full amount.

Times are tough for everybody, and if you

can’t rely on your mother, there has got to be something really wrong.

I felt a little guilty on Christmas morning when I grabbed the envelope lying under the tree. It had always been there in the past.

I should just be happy with what I get. But I still couldn’t believe that my mom would have to cut back this year. I was so bothered that I didn’t sit down. I fumbled with the envelope, still not believing she would let me down. No matter how bad things got, there was no way she would not send the full amount— not if she knew how much it

began adorning their trees with strings of Christmas lights. In the 1930s, some tree stands (now thankfully obsolete) featured a perilous mix of water and electrical components.

Our tree, as I remember, had bubble lights. My father used to wait until the very last minute to buy a tree. What entered the front door of our apartment late at night looked like Charlie Brown’s Christmas tree—but improved under the lights, the ornaments, and the tinsel.

We did not serve the Italian Feast of the Seven Fishes; instead, we consumed an impossible spread that included ravioli, ziti, or lasagna, and a baked ham studded with pineapple and cloves.

One year my dad bought an aluminum

tree. I barely remember it, and I have no idea where it is today. These have now become collectibles. One of KN’s Theories of Existence: “If you keep it long enough, virtually everything will become a collectible.”

Many people now innovate: some dye their trees red; others hang them from the ceiling. My own favorite tree was an artificial tabletop model—white—on which I placed white paper doves with magenta eyes, ribbons, and little star ornaments made of straw. I also once had a licensed Barbie tree (pink, of course!).

Do your own thing. Fight, fight against the dying of the light!

Riverhead Breaks Ground On Long-Planned Town Square

By Robert Chartuk Eastern Long Island reached a major milestone in a long-planned downtown transformation this week with the groundbreaking of Riverhead Town Square, a flagship revitalization project aimed at reconnecting Main Street to the Peconic River and reshaping community life.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held at the project site, bringing together town, county, state and federal officials alongside community leaders and project partners. The Town Square is envisioned as a pedestrian-friendly public destination featuring landscaped green space, an amphitheater, playground, walkways, mixed-use commercial space and a boutique hotel.

Town officials said the project represents the culmination of decades of planning and collaboration. Supervisor Tim Hubbard called the groundbreaking “the realization of a vision 30 years in the making,” describing the Town Square as a future economic, social and cultural hub for Riverhead.

Funding for the project reflects broad multi-level support. Investments include more than $24 million in federal RAISE funds, $4.2 million through New York State’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative, additional state grants through Empire State Development and Parks and Historic Preservation,

and county support through Suffolk’s Jumpstart and Downtown Revitalization programs.

Governor Kathy Hochul said the project strengthens downtown Riverhead by creating accessible public space while supporting local businesses and improving connections to the waterfront. U.S. Senator Charles Schumer noted the federal funding will allow Riverhead to reclaim the Peconic Riverfront, enhance flood mitigation and improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.

Congressman Nick LaLota praised the partnership between levels of government, while state and regional economic development leaders highlighted the Town Square’s role in driving economic activity and quality-of-life improvements.

Developer Joe Petrocelli said the project aims to create a year-round center for community life and economic revitalization. Local business, arts and civic leaders echoed support, citing opportunities for events, tourism and renewed Main Street activity.

Wildlife Photographer’s Ultimate Owl Experience

By Robert Chartuk What began as a startling encounter near Moriches Inlet grew into what Robin Penny-Leuthhardt now calls her “ultimate owl experience,” a rare, two-part wildlife moment that unfolded across Long Island’s South Shore and deepened her gratitude for the natural world.

The Center Moriches resident wasn’t out for a casual stroll. She was pursuing her passion of photographing wildlife when the first moment stopped her in her tracks. “I was watching an owl near Moriches Inlet when I saw a red tail hawk fly up and tap it on the head,” she said. “I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. It was quick, dramatic, and completely wild.”

That brief interaction stayed with her, setting the stage for an even more powerful experience a few days later. While photographing birds near the New Inlet in the Fire Island National Seashore Wilderness Area, Robin found herself faceto-face with another snowy owl. “It sat about 10 feet away for a few minutes and didn’t seem concerned that l was there,” she explained. “Then suddenly, it jumped up and flew right at me. I was shooting the whole time and fell over backwards after it tapped me on the head. It was the ultimate owl experience, absolutely breathtaking.”

She described the moment as almost

surreal. “It felt like time slowed down,” Robin said. “The owl came straight toward me, wings wide, totally unfazed.

I felt incredibly lucky to witness something so raw and natural.”

For Robin, the experience reinforced why she treasures living on Long Island’s South Shore. “People don’t always realize how much incredible wildlife we have right here,” she said. “Owls, hawks, ospreys — they’re part of our everyday

landscape.”

The Fire Island setting made it even more meaningful. “The dunes, the open sky, the quiet — it all reminded me how important these protected areas are,” she said. “These animals depend on them.”

She left the experience feeling grounded and grateful. “This is why I do what I do,” Robin said. “Nature always has something amazing to show you, especially if you’re patient enough to look.”

The American people deserve the truth—fully, cleanly, and without political theater. That principle applies to everything, but especially to matters as serious as the Jeffrey Epstein files.

The decision to release documents tied to one of the most disturbing criminal enterprises in modern history should never be rushed, botched, or half delivered. And yet, here we are, faced with a staggered rollout, unclear timelines, and an unsettling lack of institutional clarity from the Department of Justice.

This is not an argument against transparency. Quite the opposite. Transparency is only meaningful when it is deliberate, comprehensive, and trustworthy. When disclosures dribble out in fragments, when explanations lag behind expecta-

The concern here is not what is being released. It is how.

The DOJ is not a startup. It is not a social media platform experimenting with engagement.

It is one of the most powerful institutions in the federal government, entrusted with safeguarding evidence, protecting due process, and maintaining public confidence. When it undertakes something as sensitive as releasing Epstein-related material—documents that implicate reputations, revive trauma, and inflame public distrust—it must do so with an infrastructure capable of han-

What we are witnessing instead feels like bureaucratic congestion. Layers upon layers of review, internal disagreements, outdated systems, and a culture that often prioritizes self-protection over clarity. That is not a partisan observation. It is an institutional one. Anyone who has worked in or around federal agencies understands how inertia can slow even the most well-intentioned efforts.

Delays alone are not proof of malice. But delays without explanation breed suspicion. Fragmented releases invite misinformation. And silence—especially from a department that owes the public accountability—creates a vacuum that rumor will always fill.

Let me be clear. This is not

about targeting any political figure, past or present. This is not about settling scores or manufacturing outrage. And it certainly is not about undermining President Trump, who has repeatedly emphasized the importance of law, order, and institutional integrity. This is about whether the DOJ, as currently structured, is capable of executing transparency without stumbling over its own bureaucracy.

If documents require redaction, say so. If systems are outdated, admit it. If internal processes are slowing things down, explain why and set firm expectations. Americans are far more forgiving of honesty than they are of obfuscation. I know this firsthand: the truth will always buy you goodwill.

The Epstein case is a scar on our national conscience. Mishandling its aftermath through poor communication or administrative dysfunction only deepens that wound. Justice is not served by confusion, and trust is not restored by delay without dialogue.

We should demand better.

Not louder. Not angrier. But better.

Transparency done right strengthens institutions.

Transparency done poorly erodes them. The Department of Justice must decide which legacy it wants to leave in this moment. And until it does, the American people are right to pause, to watch carefully, and to expect more from a system that owes them nothing less than the truth—delivered responsibly.

A Chaplain’s Call to Serve

By The South Shore Press Rev. Bill Minson’s path from the Bronx to becoming one of the nation’s most trusted spiritual responders is a journey shaped by faith, endurance, and a relentless desire to serve people in their hardest moments.

Born and raised near Yankee Stadium, Minson grew up at the cultural crossroads of New York City, surrounded by performers, laborers, and families whose daily struggles and triumphs shaped his earliest understanding of community, resilience, and compassion.

Long before he was known as “Chaplain Bill,” Minson was immersed in the entertainment world. His career began on the road with Ringling Brothers, where he learned the demands of constant travel and teamwork.

He later worked at the Apollo

Theater, handling advertising and public relations for one of the most iconic stages in American history and engaging with artists whose influence stretched far beyond Harlem.

It was at the Apollo that Minson met civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson, a connection that led to national outreach, media work, and expanded responsibilities. He eventually made history as the first Black agent at the powerhouse talent agency ICM, representing major clients and appearing on national programs such as The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. Despite the success and visibility, Minson felt an unmistakable pull toward something deeper.

“The entertainment world was exciting,” he later said, “but it wasn’t the end of what God intended for me.” Gradually—and

not without hesitation—he turned toward ministry, mentoring young people in New York and Los Angeles and urging them to pursue education, discipline, and strong character.

That calling placed him in Manhattan on September 11, 2001. Just two days after the attacks, Minson was sworn in as a chaplain for the American Red Cross, a moment he describes as the beginning of his life’s true mission. “It felt like God placed me there for a reason,” he recalled. “The question wasn’t why, but what now?”

When Red Cross recovery operations ended, Minson continued his work with the Salvation Army. Since then, his chaplaincy has taken him across the country to communities shattered by mass violence and profound loss, where his steady presence offers comfort when words are no longer enough.

By Robert Chartuk A new initiative unveiled by the Trump administration will allow American taxpayers—whose dollars have long supported major corporations and market growth—to share directly in the wealth those systems generate.

Speaking at a White House event, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described “Trump Accounts” as a fundamental shift in how Americans participate in the economy, calling it “the biggest merger in history—the merger of Main Street and Wall Street.”

“For decades, American taxpayers have funded the infrastructure, research, and innovation that helped build some of the world’s largest corporations and made

billionaires out of a select few,” Bessent said. “Now, every American will get a piece of the action.”

Under the program, every U.S. citizen would begin life with an investment account tied to the performance of the American economy, allowing even small contributions to grow over time through market participation.

Bessent emphasized that the accounts are not a traditional government benefit but a framework built around ownership and private investment.

“Trump Accounts are the president’s gift to the American people,” Bessent said. “They represent perhaps the most groundbreaking policy innovation of modern times. Every American becomes a

shareholder in the most powerful economy on earth.”

Bessent argued that taxpayers have effectively subsidized transformative technologies—such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and advanced manufacturing— through public spending and policy support, while the financial rewards flowed disproportionately to large corporations and their executives. Trump Accounts, he said, are designed to rebalance that equation.

Living another day to help others

By Robert Chartuk Steve Castleton doesn’t measure his life by the illnesses he’s survived or the narrow escapes that should have ended it. He measures it by purpose.

“I firmly believe I was kept here for a reason,” Castleton says. “And that reason is to help other people.”

It’s a belief that has guided him through paralysis, cancer, a life-threatening heart condition, and countless moments where the outcome could have gone the other way. As the holidays approach, Castleton’s story reads less like a medical timeline and more like a testimony—rooted in faith, service, and a sense that his life was meant to be poured back into others.

“I’m not the most religious guy in the world,” he said.

“But I’m very spiritual. Things happen for a reason. You may not understand it at the time, but eventually you do.”

That outlook was tested during the early months of the COVID pandemic. As hospitals and first responders scrambled for supplies, Castleton spent more than 30 days helping coordinate and deliver desperately needed Personal Protective Equipment from Stony Brook University Hospital’s Lang Center to veterans homes, the VA, and first responder organizations across Suffolk County. He initially dismissed lingering aches as nothing more than age catching up with him—until one morning when he tried to get out of bed and collapsed.

“My leg had less strength than spaghetti from,” he joked.

Firefighters rushed him to the hospital, where doctors ran test after test. He spent nearly a month hospitalized, paralyzed from the waist down, eventually diagnosed with neurosarcoidosis—a rare inflammatory condition involving a tumor on the spine.

For much of that time, he was on a morphine drip, which led to one of his favorite stories.

“You should never have internet access while on morphine,” Castleton laughed.

“I thought I was hitting ‘like’ on Amazon. Turns out I was hitting ‘buy now.’ I ended up with boxes of stuff—including gnomes. I’ve never owned gnomes in my life.”

Even from his hospital bed, Castleton kept working.

While paralyzed, he secured thousands of Department of Defense–approved PPE kits for West Point ahead of a presidential graduation visit—at no cost. “The general said that’s why he called me,” Castleton recalled. “He didn’t know how I’d get it done. He just knew I would.”

After 29 days in the hospital, Castleton went home using a walker, then a cane.

Friends, including Suffolk County Police Sgt. Tommy Joy, became his legs—driving him to military bases, West Point, and events across New York City. He continued his work as a civilian aide to the Secretary of the Army, helped establish

JROTC cyber programs in New York City schools, and never slowed down.

Then came prostate cancer. Instead of fear, Castleton chose faith—and a longplanned trip to Italy with his son. At the Vatican, after washing his hands and drinking from a fountain he wasn’t supposed to touch, he felt something unmistakable.

“I looked at my son and said, ‘I’m going to be cured of cancer,’” he said. “I didn’t just think it. I felt it.” He was right. Castleton is now more than a year and a half cancer-free.

Earlier this year, doctors discovered another silent threat: a “widowmaker” heart blockage, with one artery 71

percent blocked. Castleton met the news with humor. “I told the doctor it couldn’t be a widowmaker,” he said. “I’m divorced.” After surgery, his energy returned stronger than it had been in decades.

Castleton has long dedicated that energy to service. He has supported the Tunnel to Towers foundation since its earliest days, helped VetDogs, funded Long Island Cares’ veterans program for years, and organized military and first responder initiatives for the New York Jets for more than 15 years—all pro bono.

He previously ran similar programs for the Mets and works closely with the Suffolk County Police Department.

A pioneer in email fundraising and founder of The Political Insider, Castleton once raised more than $3 million online for a U.S. Senate campaign. Two years ago, he organized a historic moment at the New York Stock Exchange—ringing the opening bell during the Exchange’s first-ever live military enlistment ceremony on the trading floor.

Family remains central to his mission. Though he never served himself, his two sons and daughter-in-law represent a combined 54 years of Army service. “That’s why I do what I do,” he said.

As Christmas approaches, Castleton doesn’t dwell on what he survived—but on what he’s been given. “My doctors tell me I’ve got about 30 more years,” he said. “And that’s 30 more years of doing good.”

Bad Weather Prompts Safety Warning

By Robert Chartuk Hazardous winter weather prompted renewed safety warnings from PSEG Long Island, as strong winds and heavy rain downed trees, branches and power lines across the region.

A fast-moving weather system brought wind gusts that exceeded forecasts, nearing 60 miles per hour in some locations. Falling trees and debris caused scattered power outages and dangerous conditions along roadways and residential areas.

PSEG Long Island emphasized that public safety remains its top priority during winter storms, particularly when high

winds and saturated ground increase the risk of falling trees and downed wires.

Residents are reminded to treat all downed wires as energized and extremely dangerous.

People should stay far away, keep children and pets clear, and never drive over or stand near fallen wires. Downed wires should be reported immediately by calling PSEG Long Island’s 24-hour Electric Service number at 800-4900075 or by contacting 911.

Standing water also poses a serious hazard, as electricity travels easily through water.

Anyone encountering flooded areas should stop, back up, and choose another route.

PSEG Long Island also warned against improper generator use during outages.

Generators and gasoline-powered equipment should never be used indoors, in garages, or near windows or doors. Units should be placed at least 20 feet from structures and connected using extension cords long enough to maintain that distance.

Stony Brook Southampton Introduces Six-Week Comedy Class

By The South Shore Press Stony Brook Southampton will offer a six-week comedy course starting in January 2026. The class, titled “Think You’re Funny?”, is scheduled from January 7 to February 18 and will run weekly on Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9 pm at the Stony Brook Southampton campus. Paul Anthony, an experienced comedian, will serve as the instructor.

The course is open to both Stony Brook Southampton students and community members, with no prior performance experience required.

Issue with Tissue: Major Brands Flunk Sustainability Test

By Robert Chartuk Americans may debate politics, sports, and energy policy, but one household staple unites nearly everyone: toilet paper. According to a new report, however, that indispensable comfort may come with some uncomfortable environmental baggage.

The Natural Resources Defense Council’s seventh annual Issue With Tissue scorecard finds that several of the nation’s most popular toilet paper brands continue to rely heavily on forest destruction, even as more sustainable alternatives sit quietly on the same store shelves.

Leading the list of poor performers are Charmin, Angel Soft, Quilted Northern, Amazon Basics, and Kirkland, all of which received failing grades.

The report examined 152 tissue products, grading them on fiber sourcing, forest impacts, and bleaching practices. While 36 products earned A or A-plus grades by using 100 percent recycled content, 80 products received D or F grades for relying on virgin forest fiber, much of it sourced from Canada’s boreal forest, where roughly one million acres are clearcut each year.

“No one wants to wipe away a forest,” said Ashley Jordan, an NRDC advocate and author of the report. “Softness shouldn’t cost a clear-cut.”

The boreal forest is the most carbon-dense terrestrial ecosystem on Earth, storing roughly twice the carbon found in all remaining global oil reserves. Logging releases large amounts of that carbon while

disrupting habitat for threatened wildlife, including boreal caribou.

The report suggests even small changes could make a big difference. If every American swapped just one roll of forest-fiber toilet paper for a recycled alternative, the country could save 1.6 million trees, more than a billion gallons of water, and avoid nearly 800 million pounds of climate-warming pollution.

Not all brands fared poorly.

The Difficulties, Controversies of Fighting in Europe in 1944

BY RICHARD ACRITELLI On December 16, 1944, Autumn Mist was a secret German offensive involving approximately 250,000 enemy soldiers supported by 1,000 tanks. This massive attack struck the Allied “Broad Front” campaign of General Dwight D. Eisenhower, which stretched from the English Channel to the Swiss border and was designed to push eastward to defeat the Third Reich. Eisenhower’s forces were burdened by extended supply lines, exhausted soldiers, and “green” reinforcements, many of whom lacked adequate cold-weather clothing.

Many Americans believed it was only a matter of time before the war would end.

The Battle of the Bulge began with a seventy-five-mile assault through the dense forests and limited roadways of the Ardennes region of Belgium and Luxembourg. Four divisions immediately bore the brunt of the attack, as German forces quickly penetrated nearly fifty miles toward the Meuse River in Belgium.

An example of these devastating losses was the fate of the 106th Infantry Division, which trained at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and was led by Major General Alan Walter Jones, a career Army officer. While it was estimated that an American Army division should guard approximately five miles of territory, the 106th was responsible for securing twenty-one miles prior to the Battle of the Bulge. It was widely believed that German armor could not maneuver through this rugged terrain. Once the fighting began, however, the Germans crushed the 106th Division, as approximately 7,500

After growing up amid hardship in the Bronx, Miguel Logreira chose a life of service that would carry him across five continents and through some of the most consequential moments of the late Cold War and Gulf War era. More than two decades later, his commitment to helping others has not faded—it has simply taken a new form.

Logreira recently sat down with historian and host Rich Acritelli on The Fog of War and Humanity, a podcast produced by hmTv, where he reflected on a military career shaped by resilience, empathy, and cultural understanding.

soldiers were killed, captured, or forced to flee.

Compounding the surprise of the German Wehrmacht assault, the 106th’s fighting capability was already reduced to roughly half strength. Many of its finest soldiers had been transferred to units shipping out to Europe and the Pacific. Originally known as “The Golden Lions,” the division trained for overseas duty with a mix of soldiers from widely varied backgrounds and experiences.

To compensate for shortages, the 106th absorbed 1,100 air cadets, 1,500 men from other divisions, 2,500 soldiers from disbanded military organizations, and personnel reassigned from support services. Many of these men did not know one another or their officers and were hastily processed into the division before being sent to Europe.

General George C. Marshall’s re-creation of the Army produced many capable officers who successfully led men throughout the war. The 106th, however,

proved to be a tragic exception to the overall success of American forces under Marshall’s leadership. Unlike General George S. Patton’s Third Army, which had fought together since Normandy, the 106th was a loosely assembled unit with little combat experience or cohesion and was quickly overrun.

As the 106th was virtually destroyed at the outset of the Battle of the Bulge, one of the most controversial wartime decisions was unfolding. Private Eddie D. Slovik was a married 4-F civilian with a history of petty crimes and imprisonment. With the Army in desperate need of manpower, Slovik was drafted and sent to France. In late August 1944, Slovik and another replacement soldier were separated from their unit during heavy fighting, and Slovik decided he was unwilling to serve in the infantry. The two men found refuge with Canadian forces for six weeks behind the lines, performing menial tasks before being returned to their

original unit.

Upon rejoining his rifle company, Slovik inquired about the punishment he would receive if he willfully deserted his post. He then left his command, wandered to another unit, and turned himself over to a cook, who summoned a captain. Slovik verbally and in writing stated that he would desert again if sent back to the infantry. Requesting reassignment to a rear-area position, he was denied. Slovik admitted he was frightened by heavy combat and emotionally paralyzed by the fighting.

He was repeatedly told to return to his unit, assured that his letter would be destroyed, and promised that the incident would be forgotten. Slovik refused these offers, believing he would receive a prison sentence and be released after the war. His superiors warned him that desertion during combat could result in prosecution and execution. Slovik was confined to a military jail and again offered a chance to end the matter quietly by joining another infantry unit and destroying his written confession. An Army psychologist evaluated him and found that he was not insane, felt comfortable in confinement, and openly stated he would flee from combat if ordered to fight.

On November 11, 1944, Slovik faced a court-martial in Röthen, Germany, held in a war-damaged two-story building before nine staff officers with no combat experience. Even during the trial, Slovik was given opportunities to abandon the case and return to duty, but he refused. The panel unanimously convicted him and sentenced him to death by firing

squad. Slovik was stunned by the verdict, believing that the last American soldier executed for desertion had been during the Civil War. Approximately two weeks later, 28th Infantry Division Commander Major General Norman Cota approved the execution. His division had suffered an estimated 6,000 casualties during the brutal Hürtgen Forest campaign, and Cota refused to grant clemency, particularly after Slovik admitted he would desert again. As the Battle of the Bulge intensified and Eisenhower learned of catastrophic early losses such as the destruction of the 106th Division, Slovik’s case was brought before him. With Allied forces reeling, struggling through snow and enemy fire to halt the German offensive, Eisenhower showed little sympathy for Slovik’s refusal to serve.

Although forty-nine other death sentences for desertion were issued during the war and later commuted, Slovik never fully believed he would be executed.

He wrote to Eisenhower, apologizing for his “sins” and stating, “To my knowledge I have a good record since my marriage and as a soldier. I’d like to continue to be a good soldier….” He closed his letter with, “Yours for Victory, Pvt. Eddie D. Slovik.” No pardon was granted.

On January 31, 1945, Slovik was executed by twelve expert riflemen. Though initially wounded, he did not die immediately.

After the rifles were reloaded, Slovik was finally killed, becoming the only American soldier executed for desertion during World War II.

Over his career, Logreira became fluent in Arabic and Portuguese, and earned airborne wings through grueling training at Fort Benning. He later attended the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California, where immersion in culture—not just vocabulary—became central to his work. That approach followed him into overseas assignments in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, including Germany during the fall of the Berlin Wall and Saudi Arabia during the Gulf War. Logreira says his greatest lessons came not from rank or accolades, but from people— mentors who became father

figures, fellow soldiers who relied on one another in extreme conditions, and civilians whose lives were shaped by war and scarcity. A traumatic brain injury from a Humvee rollover later challenged his memory and speech, but he credits rehabilitation and perseverance with helping him rebuild.

Today, Logreira continues to serve through advocacy, mentorship, and engagement with fellow veterans. He participates in VA programs addressing PTSD and substance abuse, speaks openly about the importance of empathy in leadership, and focuses much of his energy on being a present and intentional father to his son.

Saying ‘No’ to Being an Executor

Q: I’ve been

named an executor of my friend’s estate, but I don’t think I’m up to the task. Is it possible for me to decline?

A:

Being named as an executor may be a tremendous honor, but the title also carries significant responsibility. An executor holds many important duties and often must perform these obligations while navigating the grief of losing a loved one. Furthermore, complications such as advanced age or physical distance may

make it difficult to perform the tasks required.

While it is important to carefully consider whether to serve as an executor, you are not obligated to do so simply because you have been named in the will. Any person nominated as an executor may decline the role for any reason.

This is accomplished by executing a form called a Renunciation of Nominated Executor. As the title suggests, by signing this form in the presence of a notary public and filing it with the appropriate court, you can renounce your right to serve as executor and allow the next person in line to serve. Note that you may only renounce the designation after the testator has passed away; you cannot preemptively decline the role.

Typically, a will names a successor executor, who will have priority to act as fiduciary in your stead. However, if no successor executor is named, or if the successor is unable to act, any of the bene-

ficiaries named in the will may serve in a fiduciary capacity by obtaining court documents known as Letters of Administration c.t.a. (cum testament annexo, or “with the will annexed”). If none of the beneficiaries agree to serve, they may each designate another individual, provided they all agree on the same person (see SCPA §1418[6]).

An executor may also decline to serve after being appointed by the court, although this process involves additional hurdles. In such cases, the court-appointed fiduciary must request permission from the court to resign and demonstrate “good cause” for doing so. The executor must also provide a formal accounting to all beneficiaries detailing all financial transactions made since appointment, which can make the resignation process extensive.

Electric Rates Soar Under New York’s Green Energy Mandates

By Robert Chartuk Former Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy is warning that New York’s aggressive climate mandates have driven electric rates sharply higher while delivering “few environmental benefits,” citing a new report from the Center for Cost Effective Government.

According to Levy, the analysis shows that electricity bills climbed by roughly 50 percent in the six years following implementation of the state’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act. “Progressive policies implemented by New York’s Legislature designed to tackle climate change have caused energy rates in the state to skyrocket,” Levy said, calling the results “economically damaging and environmentally ineffective.”

The CLCPA, enacted in 2019,

mandates a 40 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, net-zero emissions by 2050, and 100 percent renewable electricity by 2040. Levy said state leaders are now quietly retreating from those goals. “The government has been telling utilities to slow-walk the decommissioning of gas-fired plants,” he said, adding that the governor paused an all-electric mandate for new buildings after the November election.

Levy blamed rising costs on policies that shut down nuclear plants, blocked natural gas pipelines, banned fracking, imposed carbon penalties on utilities, and mandated electric vehicles. “Ironically, New York’s carbon footprint wound up being worse after passage of this bill,” he said.

He pointed to upcoming rate hikes as evidence of mounting

strain, noting that New York State Electric & Gas has proposed a 23.7 percent increase, while National Grid and Con Edison are also seeking significant hikes. “This lack of supply is being exacerbated by the enormous energy demands of the AI revolution,” Levy said.

Levy cited Germany and California as cautionary examples and warned offshore wind projects are now seeking higher rates to cover rising costs. “At first, we were told it would save money,” he said.

“Now the argument is simply that it’s worth paying an arm and a leg.”

Levy said New York should pursue “a rational, gradual transition” focused on affordability, reliability, and innovation rather than “extreme policies that burden families today for minimal gains decades from now.”

Stefanik’s announcement that she is suspending her campaign for governor and will not seek re-election to Congress clears what was shaping up as a bitter Republican primary in a state Democrats hope to hold.

Stefanik, a high-profile Republican and House conference chair, said “it is not an effective use of our time or your generous resources to spend the first half of next year in an unnecessary and protracted Republican primary, especially in a chal-

lenging state like New York.”

In the wake of her exit, Suffolk GOP Chairman Jesse Garcia signaled full support for Blakeman, stating he “has shown leadership Long Island families can trust.” Garcia praised Blakeman’s focus on public safety and fiscal responsibility and urged party unity behind his statewide bid. “His record of delivering results in Nassau County shows he’s ready to take on Albany and restore common-sense governance for all New Yorkers,” Garcia said.

Nassau County Republican Leader Joseph Cairo, an early Blakeman backer, offered a robust endorsement, highlighting the county executive’s appeal and electability. “Bruce has proven he can win and lead— not just in Nassau County, but

THE FANTASY BASEBALL EXPERIENCE

Torres is Steady in Rock City

By Tom Barton In the 2026 fantasy baseball landscape, second base has become a near-barren wasteland for talent. Years ago—yes, I am dating myself—shortstop was the position where fantasy managers hoped to find a simple two-category contributor. Then, for a time, catcher held that dubious distinction. Now, heading into 2026, the thinnest fantasy position is unquestionably second base. In fact, it is almost impossible to find a true five-category contributor, let alone a six-category player for those in advanced formats.

Players like Jazz Chisholm headline the position, but his declining batting average and ongoing durability concerns make him far from a sure thing. Brice Turang showed some power last season, but whether that growth is sustainable remains a major question. Ketel Marte continues to thrive in real-life baseball, yet he is aging and no longer provides

much speed. Beyond that, players such as Nico Hoerner, who help in three or four categories, are being ranked as top-10 options, which illustrates just how shallow the position has become.

One name that appears underrated heading into the season is familiar to New York fans: Gleyber Torres. Torres profiles as a steady option at an otherwise volatile position. He has an established track record while still being young enough to offer some remaining upside. Now playing for a strong Detroit lineup, Torres spent much of last season hitting near the top or middle of the order, which helped stabilize his fantasy value.

He is unlikely to be drafted inside the top five at the position and may not crack the top 10, but that makes him an excellent value. Torres is one of the few second basemen who can still contribute across the board. He should approach 20 home runs, steal double-digit bases, and post a batting average that will not

This past Thursday night football game may have been the most important midweek matchup in a long time, and it could ultimately help determine not only the NFC West title, but also the NFC champion and the eventual Super Bowl winner. Despite the Seattle Seahawks pulling off a dramatic overtime victory, which required a furious late-game comeback, the odds board still is not fully buying into Sam Darnold and his supporting cast.

With the overtime win, the Seahawks clinched a playoff spot and made a statement by getting revenge for their loss just a few weeks ago to Matthew Stafford and company. However, even after the victory, the Los Angeles Rams remain the betting favorites to win the Super Bowl, currently sitting at +425. Seattle is beginning to close the gap, but they still trail with odds listed at 5-to-1.

Rams are Still the Favorites Despite the Loss

so fascinating is the sheer number of possibilities still on the table. Not only can the Rams or Seahawks still win the division and potentially claim the No. 1 seed, but even the third-place San Francisco 49ers remain alive for both.

In fact, by the end of the night, San Francisco oddly had a better chance to win the overall top seed than they did to actually win the division itself, highlighting just how tight the race has become.

Over in the AFC, the Denver Broncos currently hold the third-shortest Super Bowl odds at +750, just ahead of the Buffalo Bills at 8-to-1.

The Houston Texans check in at 11-to-1, and the next NFC team on the board is the Philadelphia Eagles, also listed at 11-to-1.

With only two weeks remaining in the regular season, there is still an incredible amount yet to be decided, making every game, result, and betting shift more important than ever.

Stony Brook Remains Unbeaten at Home

The Seawolves held Columbia to only 17 points in the first half, setting the tone early.

Defense remained the calling card throughout the contest, as Stony Brook clamped down again in the overtime period to secure the win.

Senior guard Erik Pratt played a pivotal role in the overtime victory and was rewarded by being named Co-CAA Player of the Week.

Pratt elevated his game when it mattered most, scoring eight of Stony Brook’s 12 overtime points. He also set a career high at the free-throw line, delivering in crucial moments and helping close out the hardfought win.

The Stony Brook men’s basketball team earned CAA Team of the Week honors this week after putting together an impressive stretch of performances at home. The Seawolves picked up victories over Columbia and Central Michigan, continuing their strong start to the season.

With the two wins, Stony Brook improved to 8-3 overall, already matching its total win output from last season with plenty of basketball still to be played.

LaFontaine Heads to the Isles Hall

By Tom Barton Pat LaFontaine’s plaque has officially been added to the Islanders Hall of Fame wall, placing him among some of the most legendary figures in franchise history.

The former star forward was inducted into the Ring of Honor at UBS Arena, becoming the 17th member to receive the prestigious distinction.

LaFontaine expressed immense gratitude for the honor during an emotional ceremony held Saturday night. The celebration took place in front of a packed house of Islanders fans and the 2025–26 Islanders roster, along with several Islanders Hall of Famers. Legend-

members of LaFontaine’s extended family, who joined him at ice

LaFontaine, who ranks ninth in franchise history with 566 points, including 287 goals and 279 assists in 530 games, was presented with a bronze plaque, a custom painting, and an Islanders Hall of Fame jacket. The ovation from the crowd reflected his lasting impact on the organization and its fan base.

During his induction speech, LaFontaine took time to praise the future of the Islanders, singling out the play of 18-year-old Matthew Schaefer as a promising sign for the franchise. His comments highlighted his continued

connection to the team and belief in its direction.

Although his playing days are long behind him, LaFontaine remains a familiar presence on Long Island. He continues to live in the area and runs the Champions in Courage Foundation, an organization dedicated to concussion awareness, prevention, and education. Trump Hosts the Miracle on Ice Team

By Tom Barton Last week there was a Miracle in the White House. That is because thirteen members of the 1980 U.S. men’s Olympic hockey team visited into the Oval Office wearing white cowboy hats, a callback to what they donned during the opening ceremonies of the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid.

The men, along with several family members, stood behind President Donald Trump as he celebrated their historic achievement at those Winter Games.

“Forty-five years ago, this tremendous group of collegiate players and amateurs faced overwhelming odds against the Soviet Union at the Lake Placid Winter Olympics,” Trump said during the ceremony.

The American team famously

defeated the heavily favored Soviet Union in a game that became known as the Miracle on Ice. To honor the team’s achievement, Trump pulled out a black marker and signed the Congressional Gold Medal Act into law. “It’s a great achievement,” Trump said as he signed the bill and handed the marker to team captain Mike Eruzione.

Eruzione captained the 1980 squad and scored the game-winning goal against the Soviets. He said it was an honor to compete for Team USA and to now be recognized by both Congress and the President.

“I’ve always said the gold medal is incredible, but this is frosting on the cake,” Eruzione said. “To receive an award like this, an honor like this—this is it. I don’t think there’s anything else we can get.”

Puerta has been training with the national team in Bogotá, Colombia, as part of the final preparation before traveling to Morocco to compete on the world stage against the top youth programs from around the globe.

Smithtown Celebrates Night of Champions

By Tom Barton The Smithtown Central School District Board of Education proudly recognized several championship teams this week during its Board of Education meeting, celebrating an outstanding year marked by dedication, perseverance, and athletic excellence. Each team was introduced by Director of Athletics Jason Lambert, who highlighted the remarkable accomplishments achieved throughout the season.

The Smithtown girls swim team capped off another dominant campaign by finishing as back-to-back New York State champions, earning their third state title in the past four years.

The program also captured its

fifth consecutive county championship, continuing its reputation as one of the premier swim programs in the state.

The Smithtown gymnastics team also enjoyed a historic season, winning back-to-back county championships. The title marked the team’s fourth county championship in the last five years, further establishing its consistency and success at the highest level of competition.

Smithtown East girls volleyball was honored after being named the Class AA County Champions while also securing the League 3 championship.

The team’s strong performance throughout the season showcased depth, resilience, and teamwork, culminating in a championship run.

The Smithtown West football team was also recognized following a memorable season.

The Bulls captured the Big 4 League Championship, marking the first time in school history the program has won back-toback Big 4 titles. In addition, the team advanced to its first county championship game since 2001, an achievement that reflected the program’s growth and commitment.

Rounding out the list of honorees was the Smithtown boys cross country team. The squad earned the League 1 championship and finished second at the divisional championships. Even more impressive, the team is currently in the midst of an incredible streak of 60 consecutive dual meet victories.

Ducks Announce 2026 Coaching Staff

By Tom Barton The Long Island Ducks have announced their coaching staff for the 2026 season. Lew Ford returns for his third season as Ducks manager and is joined by returning pitching coach Bobby Blevins and newcomer Tim Battle Jr., who will serve as bench coach.

During his franchise-best 13-year playing career with the Ducks, including nine seasons as a player-coach, Ford totaled a team-record 1,036 hits. He ranks among franchise leaders in batting average, games played, RBIs, runs scored, doubles, and total bases. Ford was named the 2014 Atlantic League

Player of the Year and later helped guide multiple Ducks to league honors as a manager.

In 2025, Long Island led the Atlantic League in ERA, batting average against, and fewest hits, runs, and home runs allowed.

Mercurio fills one of two open Strategic Director positions, marking another significant milestone in his distinguished career in the sport.

Since retiring from Sachem, Mercurio’s involvement in lacrosse has expanded dramatically on the global stage. He transitioned from coaching into international leadership and development and currently serves as chair of the World Lacrosse Development Committee. During his legendary

coaching tenure at Sachem, Mercurio recorded 316 career wins, establishing himself as one of the most respected figures in high school lacrosse.

His impact, however, has continued to grow well beyond the local level.

World Lacrosse President Bob DeMarco said the 2025 General Assembly represented a critical moment for the sport as it prepares for continued growth leading into the Olympic Games.

Mercurio brings more than four decades of experience to the World Lacrosse Board, having served as a player, coach, administrator, and clinician throughout his career.

Over more than 14 years of service with World Lacrosse,

he has played a pivotal role in expanding the organization’s reach from 35 to 95 member nations. His efforts have focused on growing the game, developing emerging programs, and creating opportunities for athletes and coaches around the world.

Mercurio’s election is a point of pride for the Sachem community, which continues to celebrate his accomplishments.

The Sachem social media team shared a congratulatory message following the announcement, writing, “Thanks for making us proud, Coach!” His continued success reflects the lasting influence of his leadership and dedication to the sport of lacrosse.

SWR Wins White Plains Tiger Invitational

By Tom Barton The Shoreham-Wading River varsity wrestling team captured the team championship at the White Plains Tiger Invitational this week, delivering a dominant performance against strong competition. The Wildcats defeated 11 other teams representing Section I, Section IX, and the Catholic High School Athletic Association, showcasing their depth, toughness, and consistency throughout the tournament.

Shoreham-Wading River displayed an aggressive and highly competitive style, scoring points from all positions and controlling matches across multiple weight classes. The Wildcats finished with 296 total points, winning the event by a

commanding 97-point margin over second-place Pleasantville, which totaled 199 points. All 14 Shoreham-Wading River wrestlers entered in the tournament placed inside the top eight, an impressive accomplishment that highlighted the team’s balance and preparation.

Several Wildcats turned in standout individual performances. Andrew Dolson, Thomas Matias, Shane Cowan, Shane Hall, Brady Kitchen, and Jacob Conti all earned first-place finishes in their respective weight classes. Cowan’s performance was particularly noteworthy, as he was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler.

Jer’Shawn Coffey added a strong second-place finish, while John O’Neill placed third. Jake Da-

vis finished fourth, Gio Aliotta placed fifth, and James Como also earned a fifth-place result. Nathan Jordan finished sixth, while Bradley Brandt and Leo Marcario each placed seventh.

The team’s success at the invitational reflects the Wildcats’ depth, work ethic, and ability to compete at a high level against elite programs. Every wrestler contributed valuable points, reinforcing Shoreham-Wading River’s reputation as one of the top wrestling teams in the state.

Following the victory, the Wildcats are now ranked No. 7 in New York State. They will host No. 2-ranked John Glenn this week in what promises to be a highly anticipated matchup between two Long Island wrestling powerhouses.

Floyd Basketball Watches Two Success Stories

By Tom Barton It’s rare for athletes to see firsthand how much success hard work can bring, but that opportunity came this past week for the William Floyd girls’ basketball team. The Colonials attended the Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Showcase at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, an annual event featuring elite Division I matchups. The team was there to watch a highly anticipated game between the Syracuse Orange and the No. 6 Michigan Wolverines.

This matchup carried special significance for William Floyd, as it featured two alumni

competing at the highest level.

Michigan was led by head coach Kim Barnes Arico, a 1988

William Floyd alumna, while Syracuse featured guard Shy Hawkins, a 2024 William Floyd

graduate. The Wolverines came away with an impressive 81–55 victory.

Coach Barnes Arico is a member of the William Floyd, Suffolk County, and Adelphi University Athletic Hall of Fames and a recipient of the 2011 William Floyd Distinguished Alumni Award. Her collegiate coaching career is remarkable, with more than 500 career wins, including 291 at Michigan, the most by any basketball coach, men’s or women’s, in school history. She also guided the Wolverines to program-first NCAA Tournament appearances in the Sweet 16 in 2021 and the Elite Eight in 2022, and earned Big Ten Coach of the Year honors in 2017 and 2022.

Hawkins lead the Colonials to a League I title and a Class AAA semifinal appearance. As a freshman at Syracuse, she appeared in 27 of 30 games and has played in all eight contests to begin the 2025–26 season, contributing to the Orange’s strong 7–1 start.

Following the game, the Colonials had the chance to speak with both Barnes Arico and Hawkins. They answered questions, posed for photos, and shared inspirational messages about teamwork, effort, and attitude. Coach Sinclair called it a one-of-a-kind experience that will positively impact the team as it begins the season 2–0, with wins over North Babylon and Sachem North.

Perrino Wins #100

By Tom Barton This week, Miller Place junior AJ Perrino reached a major milestone, earning the 100th victory of his high school wrestling career. Achieving 100 wins before the end of a junior season is a testament to Perrino’s consistency, dedication, and high level of performance on the mat, and it places him among the elite wrestlers in the program’s history.

Perrino has been outstanding throughout his early career, establishing himself as one of the top competitors in Suffolk County. His work ethic and discipline have been evident since his freshman season, and his steady improvement has translated into success against some of the region’s toughest competition.

Coaches and teammates alike praise his preparation, focus, and competitive mindset.

Last season was a breakout year for Perrino. He earned All-County honors and captured a league championship, accomplishments that highlighted his ability to perform under pressure and excel in high-stakes matches. Those achievements helped cement his reputation as a wrestler to watch, both within the league and across Long Island.

Reaching 100 career wins is not just a reflection of individual talent, but also of the countless hours spent training, studying opponents, and pushing through adversity. Perrino’s milestone is the result of years of commitment, beginning with youth wrestling and continuing through

his development at Miller Place.

It also reflects the strong support system around him, including his coaches, teammates, and family.

With an entire postseason still ahead of him and another full season remaining after this one, Perrino’s journey is far from complete. He now has the opportunity to build on this achievement and set even higher goals for the remainder of his high school career. As he continues to compete, Perrino remains focused on improvement, team success, and making the most of every match.

The Miller Place wrestling community is proud of AJ Perrino’s accomplishment. His 100th career victory is a significant milestone and a clear indication that even greater achievements are still to come.
